Q1-In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
1. 1. In what ways doesyour media product use, developor challenge formsand conventionsof
real mediaproducts?
I believethatourmediaproductdevelopedformsof conventionsof real mediaproducts.For
example athrillerconsistsof abattle betweenthe protagonistandanantagonistwhichleadstoa
disruptioninthe equilibrium.Inourthrilleropeningwe have a clearantagonist(Jon-Jo) and
protagonist(me).The disruptionwouldoccurwhenIbelieveIsee someone inthe woodsandget
chased.Howeverbefore thisthereisabuild-upof eventswhichleadstothe climax andthe audience
feelstensionjustlike when IthinkIhearsomeone snapa twigbehindme. The overthe shoulder
shotcreatesa feelingof tensionforthe audience andwe canimplyBarthestheoryof the five codes,
whichwouldbe enigma.
Whenmakinga thrillerwe wanttomake the audience feel suspenseandpull themintoourfilm.
Furthermore the iconographygivesitmore reasontobe a thriller.A moderndaythrillerwe would
expecttosee low-keylighting,darknessandIcreepysettingjustasours illustrates.Alsothe
whispershintsatthe character hassome sort of problemandwhateverhe isseeingcouldeitherbe
real or in hishead. These conventionsdemonstrate thatwe have developedformsof a real media
product. In some instanceswe challenge the narrative theoryandyoucouldargue that the
equilibriumisn’trestored.Thisisbecause atthe endingof the chase I fall, howeverafterthiswe see
myself inthe classroomwiththe same notepad, becauseof the enigmacode audiencescould
suggestthatit was a dreamand my conditionwasplaying uporeitherthat’swhat’sgoingtocome
laterinthe movie. Therefore youcouldargue thatwe challenge the narrative theoryandinfact we
don’trestore the equilibrium.
Finally, one lastexample Icandemonstrate thatwe have beenconventional isthroughthe mise-en-
scene andsound. We locatedourproductionina woodswhichwouldbe a typical place tofilma
thriller.The woodsimplythatthere wouldbe nobodyaroundtohelpthemif theywasbeingchased.
Also, the fact we addedsoundeffectsof whisperingshowsthatthe protagonisthassome sortof
conditionmakingiteasyforthe audience tounderstandwhatishappening.The fourtechnical areas
for filmingshowclearconventionsof athriller.
