Project proposal title and date:
Gaming minds
Main area of activity:
film
Rationale:
My first real short film was ‘Time to Time’ in which the camera techniques were simplistic, and the
video quality was poor, editing was also mediocre. My second film ‘Pressure’ rectified the issue of
lack of variety in camera shots, however video quality was still lacking. Transitions were overused
due to poor footage collection, the chase sequence was extended to the point where it takes up
most of the film, editing was slightly improved but could’ve been done better. My next short film
was a documentary called ‘Software secure’, here all the issues from my last project were fixed,
the main issues were a poor narration and unrelated footage. Finally, my last project was a
promotional trailer for City screen in York, which has been my best work so far, with a variety of
camera angles and smooth transitions, combined with a soundtrack that compliments the video
well, with the only issues being the camera was blurry in some parts, but I made it work, and the
trailer didn’t show off aspects as much as I would’ve liked.
In my final project for last I quickly discovered that that the more unconventional camera work and
writing of a fictional film was not a strong suit of mine, this was one of the main things that put me
off doing a fictional film this year. However, this year with me completing my documentary, it
certainly had its flaws, however the more structured order of the concept in addition to having ease
writing the script as most of the content is already there, made it a much more appealing approach
to film for me. In addition to this getting accurate information is always something I have found to
be a key issue in an age of yellow journalism, and so that made me determined to create a
documentary where all of the true facts are, as I believe too many ‘news’ stories today mislead
people. Which is exactly why I wanted to create this documentary, video games have received a
lot of stigma over the years, but also a lot of praise. I‘m creating this documentary to set the record
straight as it were, on what is true and what isn’t.
Project Concept:
The concept for my project is a purely factual look, on the psychological and biological
consequences to a person playing videogames, however I don’t want this to be a persuasive piece
where I try and tell people what to think, because I believe that goes against what a documentary
is supposed to be as a medium, I believe that a documentary should simply present the facts but
not try and convince you to think one way or the other. The visuals for this film will mostly require
gathering footage of gameplay and recording people play games. Using a variety of camera angles
and images onscreen should create enough variety to keep the video engaging, combined with a
digital soundtrack to match the tone of the video. Typically, I want to be aiming this video towards
middle aged people, this is because the stigma of videogames as a convention seems to come
from this age category, which is something that I want to be able to break. In order to keep it
interesting however I will be addressing the issues that they likely know about or want to hear
about, subjects such as addiction and violence for example are typically subjects that are listened
to, and I believe they would want to be well informed in these areas and are more likely to listen.
I will also be interviewing professionals in psychology and biology to get their views on it, as well
as some more subjective opinions from people to get a wide range of data. Fortunately, video

games are an incredibly controversial topic with many experts arguing for and against them, this
means that there are plenty of scientific theories, opinions and studies that discuss different areas
of videogames, some covering biology but most covering the psychology angle, so that’s where
the focus of my video will be. I will be collecting this data from not just from websites but
additionally from scientific journals and articles discussing the topic, in addition to this I could also
watch documentaries and listen to podcasts on the subject, being discussed subjectively by people
who aren’t scientists.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
There are multiple ways I am going to evaluate my own work to make sure that I keep to the high
standard that I set out to do originally. Firstly, I will be keeping a weekly production diary of sorts,
documenting everything of significance that I did during the week, reviewing the outcome of this
and evaluating whether I did enough work and in the level of detail that I require or not. In addition
to this I will also be holding up a regular production reflection throughout the duration of this
project, the difference will be that this reflection will cover each section of the project that I have
completed in full detail, what I did, what I did well and what I can go back on to improve upon.
Finally, an overall evaluation of the project will let me self-assess my work overall to see if it meets
the standard, I previously set at the start of the project.

Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks
1 Pre-production Stating exactly what my project will be, specifically into
separate categories a follows: The focus of activity, the
rationale for the project, the concept for it and describing
how my project will be evaluated and reviewed.
The rationale is there to describe why exactly I decided to
do this project, and why I decided to cover this subject,
and why I decided to address it in the form of a
documentary.
My project concept is explaining how exactly I will go
about constructing the documentary, and why I am going
to be making those production and creative choices.
The point to explaining my evaluation is to clarify the
multiple ways I am going to be reviewing and reflecting
on my work as the project progresses.
2 Pre-production The first part of my week is going to be focused
on the content research. I will do this in a few
ways, the first way will be the simplest one,
finding information on websites, however a lot of
websites information is inaccurate and therefore I
will have to cross reference these websites to
make sure it is accurate. The next method I will
use is a book, as the information coming from
them will be accurate and already sourced,
making information gathered from them incredibly
easy.
The third way I will gather information will be
through podcasts, I want to be able to gather
information through Multiple ways, and podcasts
allow access to archived interviews with
professionals I can’t get elsewhere.
3 Pre-production The second part of my research was the
audience research, in this part I will have to
determine what exactly my audience type will be
by determining my demographic and taking data
from a focused survey I will conduct(which will be
my secondary research) I am able to further
determine this. Using this data, I will also able to
interpret a target psychographic for my audience
to appeal to, and in doing so with additional
research that I will source in my bibliography, I
will also able to interpret a social class that my
Proposal
6
documentary would appeal to more.
4 Pre-production The first part of my experiments will be made up
of experiments from the camera work in my
project, which will be made up from the
interviews, the second part to this will be the
audio, mixing together royalty free sounds to see
if I can make my own soundtrack, that way I will
know whether or not I should simply use a royalty
free soundtrack.
5 Pre-production The second part to my experimentation will be for
the videogame footage that I have to gather, that
will run for the majority of documentary, I will do
this to see which games are best to gather
footage for in regard to performance, and how
cinematic the game will look when edited.
6 Pre-production This part is to ensure I have a structured plan to
utilise when I go into production, this will consist
of Mutiple steps to make sure everything is
planned, the list for the first week is as follows:
The scripts, I am planning to have three separate
scripts, one for interviewing average working
people to gain their opinions, another to interview
professionals to gain their opinions, and the final
one will be the script for the narrator, however I
can’t write that one up until all of the interviews
have been conducted.
I will also have to Figure out where I will be
filming for my project, given how the only real-life
footage I will be using will be interview based, all
footage will be in the interview locations,
therefore I will note these down once I have
secured the interviews.
I will also be drafting filming location release
forms, these are documents that my interviewee
will sign, granting me permission to film on their
premises.
7 Pre-production On the second week of production I will be
working on the shot list for my documentary, it
will be considerably short for a shot list, this is
because it is almost entirely meant for the
interviews, which are structured the same way so
I will only have to draft the formulae once.
I am also going to have draft up how I’m going to
be managing my time during production,
specifically how long I will spend on filming,
gathering footage of games, narration and Post-
production editing. I will also be noting down the
number of crew that will be required, and what
roles that they will be playing, drafting a call
sheet for my crew will also be a priority to make
sure I can line up their schedules effectively. In
addition to this I will also have the plan who is
going to be needing a copy of what documents
during production.
Proposal
7
8 Production In the first week of Production I will be
assembling some of the footage that I will have
already gathered, since I play videogames as a
pastime anyway, recording gameplay at the
same time will be simplistic before production
begins. In first assembling the footage into
premiere pro I will have to cut through any of the
useless footage that I don’t need, this could be
for variety of reasons that I will explain further in
my production experiments. I will also be
contacting the businesses I was able to secure
an interview with to confirm a date.
9 Production  The second week of production will largely be
repetition of the tasks from last week, assembling
and cutting down the footage that is usable in my
film, I will also confirm any interviews that I have
secured.
10 Production  In the third week I will begin to properly assemble
the footage I will have edited down by now into a
comprehensible sequence, I will also begin
creating some of the more complicated editing
effects as they will take time to complete. In
addition to this, I will also be booking out all the
equipment that I need to conduct the interviews
for my film.
11 Production  This week I will be conducting the interviews of
people that I need to put in my film, to create a
larger amount of visual variety, in addition to this I
will also be further editing the footage that I
already have, as well as writing a script for the
narration and fine tuning it.
12 Production  This week I will be focusing on the audio part of
my production, I will focus on getting my narration
recorded to a high standard and creating any
soundtracks I need. The soundtracks need to
vary throughout the documentary; therefore, I will
have to create a multitude of them. I have no
music talent in music production so I will look into
royalty free music to remix.
13 Production  This week I will focus on syncing up the all the
audio that I have created with the video in a way
that is captivating to the audience, In addition to
this I will be further editing my film to get it all
assembled.
14 Production  The final week of production will be spent on
finishing the film off, by this point it will for the
most part be complete, however there will be
finishing touches to add to the film to tick off any
boxes that I missed previously, this means that
this week will also be important for peer and tutor
feedback to see what else I need to add or
change.
15 Evaluation  The first week of evaluation will be spent going
over how I felt about this project as a whole, what
I believe I have done well and what I could have
done better if I had the time, and how I would go
about doing this next time, this includes all
aspects of my production.
16 Evaluation  I will spend the second week of production doing
Proposal
8
the same thing, but I will focus on the theory side
of my project, this means the pre-proposal, up to
and including the production plan.
17 Evaluation  In the final week of evaluation I will talk about
what I believe to have been the biggest success
on the project, and I think will be greatest
strength at the deadline, and which part of it I
think will let me down in areas, and how I can
avoid doing this next time.

Fmp proposal

  • 1. Proposal 1 Centre Name and Number: York College 48357 Student Name and Number: Kieran Dean Beal 342751 Project proposal title and date: Gaming minds Main area of activity: film Rationale: My first real short film was ‘Time to Time’ in which the camera techniques were simplistic, and the video quality was poor, editing was also mediocre. My second film ‘Pressure’ rectified the issue of lack of variety in camera shots, however video quality was still lacking. Transitions were overused due to poor footage collection, the chase sequence was extended to the point where it takes up most of the film, editing was slightly improved but could’ve been done better. My next short film was a documentary called ‘Software secure’, here all the issues from my last project were fixed, the main issues were a poor narration and unrelated footage. Finally, my last project was a promotional trailer for City screen in York, which has been my best work so far, with a variety of camera angles and smooth transitions, combined with a soundtrack that compliments the video well, with the only issues being the camera was blurry in some parts, but I made it work, and the trailer didn’t show off aspects as much as I would’ve liked. In my final project for last I quickly discovered that that the more unconventional camera work and writing of a fictional film was not a strong suit of mine, this was one of the main things that put me off doing a fictional film this year. However, this year with me completing my documentary, it certainly had its flaws, however the more structured order of the concept in addition to having ease writing the script as most of the content is already there, made it a much more appealing approach to film for me. In addition to this getting accurate information is always something I have found to be a key issue in an age of yellow journalism, and so that made me determined to create a documentary where all of the true facts are, as I believe too many ‘news’ stories today mislead people. Which is exactly why I wanted to create this documentary, video games have received a lot of stigma over the years, but also a lot of praise. I‘m creating this documentary to set the record straight as it were, on what is true and what isn’t. Project Concept: The concept for my project is a purely factual look, on the psychological and biological consequences to a person playing videogames, however I don’t want this to be a persuasive piece where I try and tell people what to think, because I believe that goes against what a documentary is supposed to be as a medium, I believe that a documentary should simply present the facts but not try and convince you to think one way or the other. The visuals for this film will mostly require gathering footage of gameplay and recording people play games. Using a variety of camera angles and images onscreen should create enough variety to keep the video engaging, combined with a digital soundtrack to match the tone of the video. Typically, I want to be aiming this video towards middle aged people, this is because the stigma of videogames as a convention seems to come from this age category, which is something that I want to be able to break. In order to keep it interesting however I will be addressing the issues that they likely know about or want to hear about, subjects such as addiction and violence for example are typically subjects that are listened to, and I believe they would want to be well informed in these areas and are more likely to listen. I will also be interviewing professionals in psychology and biology to get their views on it, as well as some more subjective opinions from people to get a wide range of data. Fortunately, video
  • 2. Proposal 2 games are an incredibly controversial topic with many experts arguing for and against them, this means that there are plenty of scientific theories, opinions and studies that discuss different areas of videogames, some covering biology but most covering the psychology angle, so that’s where the focus of my video will be. I will be collecting this data from not just from websites but additionally from scientific journals and articles discussing the topic, in addition to this I could also watch documentaries and listen to podcasts on the subject, being discussed subjectively by people who aren’t scientists. How will the project be evaluated and reviewed: There are multiple ways I am going to evaluate my own work to make sure that I keep to the high standard that I set out to do originally. Firstly, I will be keeping a weekly production diary of sorts, documenting everything of significance that I did during the week, reviewing the outcome of this and evaluating whether I did enough work and in the level of detail that I require or not. In addition to this I will also be holding up a regular production reflection throughout the duration of this project, the difference will be that this reflection will cover each section of the project that I have completed in full detail, what I did, what I did well and what I can go back on to improve upon. Finally, an overall evaluation of the project will let me self-assess my work overall to see if it meets the standard, I previously set at the start of the project.

How to Shoot an Interview. Available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FElRjwAeiRw. Last accessed19/3/19 Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks 1 Pre-production Stating exactly what my project will be, specifically into separate categories a follows: The focus of activity, the rationale for the project, the concept for it and describing how my project will be evaluated and reviewed. The rationale is there to describe why exactly I decided to do this project, and why I decided to cover this subject, and why I decided to address it in the form of a documentary. My project concept is explaining how exactly I will go about constructing the documentary, and why I am going to be making those production and creative choices. The point to explaining my evaluation is to clarify the multiple ways I am going to be reviewing and reflecting on my work as the project progresses. 2 Pre-production The first part of my week is going to be focused on the content research. I will do this in a few ways, the first way will be the simplest one, finding information on websites, however a lot of websites information is inaccurate and therefore I will have to cross reference these websites to make sure it is accurate. The next method I will use is a book, as the information coming from them will be accurate and already sourced, making information gathered from them incredibly easy. The third way I will gather information will be through podcasts, I want to be able to gather information through Multiple ways, and podcasts allow access to archived interviews with professionals I can’t get elsewhere. 3 Pre-production The second part of my research was the audience research, in this part I will have to determine what exactly my audience type will be by determining my demographic and taking data from a focused survey I will conduct(which will be my secondary research) I am able to further determine this. Using this data, I will also able to interpret a target psychographic for my audience to appeal to, and in doing so with additional research that I will source in my bibliography, I will also able to interpret a social class that my
  • 6. Proposal 6 documentary would appeal to more. 4 Pre-production The first part of my experiments will be made up of experiments from the camera work in my project, which will be made up from the interviews, the second part to this will be the audio, mixing together royalty free sounds to see if I can make my own soundtrack, that way I will know whether or not I should simply use a royalty free soundtrack. 5 Pre-production The second part to my experimentation will be for the videogame footage that I have to gather, that will run for the majority of documentary, I will do this to see which games are best to gather footage for in regard to performance, and how cinematic the game will look when edited. 6 Pre-production This part is to ensure I have a structured plan to utilise when I go into production, this will consist of Mutiple steps to make sure everything is planned, the list for the first week is as follows: The scripts, I am planning to have three separate scripts, one for interviewing average working people to gain their opinions, another to interview professionals to gain their opinions, and the final one will be the script for the narrator, however I can’t write that one up until all of the interviews have been conducted. I will also have to Figure out where I will be filming for my project, given how the only real-life footage I will be using will be interview based, all footage will be in the interview locations, therefore I will note these down once I have secured the interviews. I will also be drafting filming location release forms, these are documents that my interviewee will sign, granting me permission to film on their premises. 7 Pre-production On the second week of production I will be working on the shot list for my documentary, it will be considerably short for a shot list, this is because it is almost entirely meant for the interviews, which are structured the same way so I will only have to draft the formulae once. I am also going to have draft up how I’m going to be managing my time during production, specifically how long I will spend on filming, gathering footage of games, narration and Post- production editing. I will also be noting down the number of crew that will be required, and what roles that they will be playing, drafting a call sheet for my crew will also be a priority to make sure I can line up their schedules effectively. In addition to this I will also have the plan who is going to be needing a copy of what documents during production.
  • 7. Proposal 7 8 Production In the first week of Production I will be assembling some of the footage that I will have already gathered, since I play videogames as a pastime anyway, recording gameplay at the same time will be simplistic before production begins. In first assembling the footage into premiere pro I will have to cut through any of the useless footage that I don’t need, this could be for variety of reasons that I will explain further in my production experiments. I will also be contacting the businesses I was able to secure an interview with to confirm a date. 9 Production  The second week of production will largely be repetition of the tasks from last week, assembling and cutting down the footage that is usable in my film, I will also confirm any interviews that I have secured. 10 Production  In the third week I will begin to properly assemble the footage I will have edited down by now into a comprehensible sequence, I will also begin creating some of the more complicated editing effects as they will take time to complete. In addition to this, I will also be booking out all the equipment that I need to conduct the interviews for my film. 11 Production  This week I will be conducting the interviews of people that I need to put in my film, to create a larger amount of visual variety, in addition to this I will also be further editing the footage that I already have, as well as writing a script for the narration and fine tuning it. 12 Production  This week I will be focusing on the audio part of my production, I will focus on getting my narration recorded to a high standard and creating any soundtracks I need. The soundtracks need to vary throughout the documentary; therefore, I will have to create a multitude of them. I have no music talent in music production so I will look into royalty free music to remix. 13 Production  This week I will focus on syncing up the all the audio that I have created with the video in a way that is captivating to the audience, In addition to this I will be further editing my film to get it all assembled. 14 Production  The final week of production will be spent on finishing the film off, by this point it will for the most part be complete, however there will be finishing touches to add to the film to tick off any boxes that I missed previously, this means that this week will also be important for peer and tutor feedback to see what else I need to add or change. 15 Evaluation  The first week of evaluation will be spent going over how I felt about this project as a whole, what I believe I have done well and what I could have done better if I had the time, and how I would go about doing this next time, this includes all aspects of my production. 16 Evaluation  I will spend the second week of production doing
  • 8. Proposal 8 the same thing, but I will focus on the theory side of my project, this means the pre-proposal, up to and including the production plan. 17 Evaluation  In the final week of evaluation I will talk about what I believe to have been the biggest success on the project, and I think will be greatest strength at the deadline, and which part of it I think will let me down in areas, and how I can avoid doing this next time. 18 Moderation  19 Show Preparation  20 Show 
