Kieran Beal created multiple platforms to showcase their final project film including a dedicated website on Wix, a Facebook page, and coordinating a public screening at the Folk Hall in New Earswick. The Wix website was designed to give the film its own space separate from other projects and included pages about the filmmaking process. A Facebook page was also made to help spread awareness of the film to hundreds of potential viewers. Additionally, Kieran worked with classmates to rent out the Folk Hall for a premiere event, creating posters, securing a discount, and planning film schedules and promotions.
2. Presentation ideas
I have uploaded my final project up toYouTube as a standard procedure for my work, however I didn't feel that
for final project that this was enough, there is a chance people will see there, however the problem with
YouTube is that my channel is in no way large.TheYouTube algorithm shows users what it believes they will like,
this can be based off their viewing habits, but it is also based off videos that are incredibly popular and have had
been viewed many times. This means there's a very low chance of it being seen on this platform, as evidence of
this, the city screen trailer I created and uploaded 5 months ago, has so far had 23 views.
Because of this I need other ways of displaying it for people to see. We as a group have already taken steps
towards doing this, myself and another classmate have spearheaded the goal of coordinating with a public
venue to premiere our work in an evening. The rest of the class have the responsibility of creating advertising
material to help promote the evening. I already took the steps to get this started, I requested another student
who obliged to draft some posters to put up around the area we are using for the show. This is a good start but
this can expanded upon further, creating more professional posters to hang and creating a trailer to spread over
social media platforms will be an excellent way to spread the news of our projects. We will decide between us
who is in charge of which area of promotion and who should work with them on this, me and my fellow
classmate are in charge of the goal as a whole so we will be overseeing it in general and continue
communicating with the Folk hall (the public venue we hired) to make sure everything continues to run
smoothly.
To help personally spread my film I will be posting to community forums and other video sharing websites with a
more niche audience to help gather feedback on it and continue to increase the number of people that can see
it. I'm choosing to spread it in this way because it is by far the quickest and easiest way to make sure that
multiple people in different parts of the world can see.
3. Presentation ideas
The reason we decided to hire out a private venue for our show, was for the most part experience and
responsibility, we realised we could just spread across media, however that lacks ambition. Therefore we
decided it would stand out far more if we took the initiative to try and physically display it outside of college
grounds.Taking on this task was also an excellent way of giving us experience in booking venues and
advertising our work, skills that will certainly be useful should any of us plan to carry out this sort of work in the
future, I for one know that I will be.
A final way I could present this work to an audience is by giving it it's very own website built around it.The
colours and themes would all be relevant to the project. In addition to this I would also give each section to the
project it's own section, instead of grouping it all into one section like I have had to do with my main website, I
would also have a section of text explaining what each part of the project, why I did it in the way I did and what
my thoughts were behind each section. I would create this website because while I have everything on my
main website, the FMP contents blends in with the other 2 projects that are on display there, as there is very
little to discern the difference between them other than the section title. My final project doesn't stand out on
there amongst the others as it should, and so I feel it should have it's own website so it really stands out.
Another way I could display my film is by creating a dev video to put on the website, the dev video would
essentially be me creating a video with narration, explaining each step of the production process, and how I felt
about each step.
4. Planning process (public screening)
The process of hiring out the Folk hall was a long but simple process, when the idea was suggested of
screening our film elsewhere the first step was to research places in and aroundYork that would have the
ability and obligation to host it.This at first was a problem, we looked at all of the generic places to screen such
as Odeon, Cityscreen andVue. However the problem here was that they were asking for far too much, and we
never could have been able to afford it, for instance to hire out the Everyman cinema's smallest room for an
evening it would have cost us at minimum two and a half grand, so this simply wasn't viable.
After this didn’t work we decided to look at places that weren't actually cinemas, but did have screening rooms
we could use. For this we looked at places such asYork Saint John university, this however was also not a viable
option as they had poor sound equipment and non HD projectors, so they didn't have the equipment we
needed. So now we had to find a place that had sufficient equipment to run our work, and were charging what
a collection of students could afford. By further refining our search we found a suitable candidate that was
relatively nearby. The folk hall is the equivelant of a community centre in New Earswick, they have monthly
film nights with suprisingly high quality equipment, this is something we discovered after I contacted the
manager and arranged a meeting with them to discuss the details. Since then I maintained contact with them
to ensure we stayed on schedule, in addition to this they were able to get us a student discount, cutting the
price from four hundred and fifty down to two hundred. The price has now been fully paid and the date is
confirmed thanks to a close friend of mine funding the project.
There are now only two tasks to complete, edit all of our films into one long feature and deliver it to the Folk
hall, and create more posters to advertise the night, we will be assigning a team/individual to do this very soon.
5. Planning process (website)
In order to create a website around my film I will be doing so via Wix. I chose this particular website designer
because in all of the wesbite creators I tried to use, including ones such as squarespace, I found Wix by far the
easiest to operate. To begin creating the website I will start off by choosing a template to use, but I will then
change most everything about it to make it original, this included the images and the layout. I would make it
original by creating a unique layout using the Wix tools, then use my own images that I have collected
throughout my project to give my website a more personal feel.
The next step will be to complete all of the sections that I want to have on the website that people can
navigate, this will likely include: the homepage, where I will provide an overview of how I felt when I created
this project and how I found it, as well as include a link to the trailer for my film.A separate page to display my
documentary, an about page where I will describe my approach to documentary making, a page where I can
display the crew who helped me on this project. A screening page where I can display all the locations my
documentary will be showing. Finally I will also be putting a documentation page on the website, so that if
people want to view exactly what my thought process was and the exact planning throughout the entirety of
the project, they can do by perusing through any of the documents at their leisure.
Once all of this has all been assembled and the general look of the website has been created, I will put any
finishing touches on the website, this can include borders around images, animations for certain assests just so
they look slightly more impressive.
6. Planning process (facebook page and dev
video)Creating the Facebook page for my films against the website will be comparatively easy to do but it's yet
another way to help my film spread. There's practically no planning that's involved in this process, the template
for all Facebook pages are excatly the same and can't be altered except for the images you put on them. Other
than that Facebook will qucikly run me through the process of setting up the page and adding a few personal
details, after that all there is to do is upload the videos there that I want, and invite friends I have on Facebook
to like the page. My friends list on Facebook is extensive enough that it has the potential to reach hundreds of
people by using this approach, and even being able to reach people not currently on my friends list.
I can attempt to create a banner for my Facebook page however I lack the skills needed to create soemthing of
high quality, it is possible that I will be able to get someone to assist me in this matter so I will ask around. In
addition to this there is also the matter of the profile picture, this will likely come in the format of the studio
logo that I will create for the website. I will likely construct this out of templates found on theWiks website,
followed by a small degree of photoshop editing.
I could potentially make an audio dev blog to put on my website fro comepltionist purposes, with the visuals
being the documents that I have created during the project, this however would be a very lengthy video and it's
doubtful anyone will watch the full thing, but it will make the website look more professional.
7. Evidence of presentation
• Wix website I created solely for the FMP: https://kierak2910.wixsite.com/gaming-minds (I
also created a trailer for the film which be accessed onYouTube via my Wix wesbite.
• Facebook page I created to display my film work: https://www.facebook.com/TallFilms-
1484588041708860/
• We have also coordinated with the Folk hall at New Earswick outside of York for a public
viewing of our films, We have created multiple ways of spreading news of this event
including: creating posters, creating a Facebook page, having the Folk hall advertise it on
their page, and I put it on my own website talking about my film, we also created our own
logo for the event.
