Man Against God in Moby Dick Essay
Man Against God in Moby Dick
Thee Works Cited "God, God is against thee, old man; forbear! 'tis an ill voyage! ill begun; ill
continued..." (418). Humanity has embarked on a journey. A journey of choice that will lead into the
end days; one which will determine mankind's fate and weave the mat of life to completion.
Humanity, like Captain Ahab, has chosen to follow the direction of his own desires rather than
reason and faith. Refusing to hear the voice of reason, man has seared Starbuck–his conscience and
morals–to "a lipless, unfeatured blank" (459). Following the desires of the flesh, he has thrown out
the compass and declared himself "lord of the level loadstone" (425). And like Captain Ahab, ...

Like Ahab, however, realizing the power in his hands, man has taken it and used it to his own
purposes. He has chosen a path of vengeance, hatred, and disobedience, "[a]nd even as they did not
like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind" (240).
The consequences of rebellion against the will of God are heavy. "For the wages of sin is death... Or
know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, His servants ye are to whom ye
obey, whether of sin unto death or of obedience unto righteousness?" (246). Mankind has chosen
disobedience in life, and he will suffer, as Ahab suffered–"voicelessly as Turkish mutes bowstring
their victims"–the humiliating end, the condemnation of God and all Creation for that disobedience:
"For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die..." (248). Just as Ahab died a humbling, seemingly
pointless death, so mankind will suffer the humiliation of a pointless and unsung fall. The coming
result is predictable both in Ahab's case and in mankind's: "Pride goeth before destruction and a
haughty spirit before a fall" (936).
Ahab chooses to ignore the premonitions, omens, and prophecies of his coming fall. He refuses to
give in to the voice of reason every time Starbuck offers him a way out. Ahab chooses to disobey

Core Values Of Conflict : The Wind That Shakes The Barley...
Core Values in Conflict
Each human in the world has a set of values around which one bases their actions and opinions on.
These sets of values vary from person to person. My core values are family, friends, and education.
The only negative aspect of my values is that they tend to be in conflict with each other often. There
are days where I have to choose between friends and family or education, and it is often a tough
decision to make. In life, everyone has to make decisions on whether one value is more important
than another, and characters in stories and plays have those decisions to make as well. Damien in
The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Wanda in The Legend both have conflicting values based on
the situations they find themselves in. In Stanislaw Wyspaniaki's The Legend, Wanda was the
adopted daughter of King Krak, who passes away during the first act. She, being the only heir to the
throne that is still alive, now has to deal with all of the problems. While Krak is dying, the Germans
are also invading the castle because the German prince wants to marry Wanda, but she declined and
so they decided to take over Poland. When Smiech tells her that that the Germans are very close and
will take her, she responds by saying, "Silence, I will plunge this knife into my chest before then,
rather than have to love them" (Wyspianki, 30). She clearly says that she would rather die than get
married to the German prince. After Krak dies, she begins to weep over his dead body.

Examples Of Foreshadowing In Horror Stories
A key element in horror stories is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing will make readers want to read
more and it will also create suspense. Foreshadowing is nearly same in horror stories.
Foreshadowing in horror stories such as "THE LANDLADY", "THE MONKEY'S PAW" and "THE
TELL– TALE HEARTS" and "The Hitchhiker" are very important and creates suspense for the
readers which makes the readers want to read more. The Landlady is mystery story written by Roald
Dahl and incorporates lots of foreshadowing. The first foreshadowing I found was when Bill pressed
the doorbell and in a second, the Landlady popped out of the door – according to the Landlady text,
lines 113– 118. This seems weird because normally you have to wait half– minute before the door
opens (lines 119–120) but this seems like she is waiting next to door so someone would show up.
Next, one foreshadowing you may have missed was when the Landlady interrupted what Billy was
saying and was trying to change the topic, according to lines 363– 373, "Now wait a minute," he
said. "Wait just a minute. Mulholland ... Christopher Mulholland ... wasn't that the name of the Eton
schoolboy who was on a walking–tour through the West Country, and then all of a sudden ..."– Billy
Milk?" she said. "And sugar?"– Landlady. She was trying to change the conversation which is pretty
weird the reader will start suspecting if the Landlady is hiding something. Furthermore, according to
lines 423–424, the Landlady says, "You have the most beautiful

What Does The Journey To The Stone Monkey Mean
Mighty Monkey Birthed from the stone a monkey shall rise. Into the woods the stone monkey goes;
a quest he follows to find the answers he seeks. "The Journey To The West" is a well known Chinese
epic contains mainly poetic and rhythmic passages to build suspense and expand on the characters
throughout the epic. One passage in particular talks about the life of a woodcutter who cares for his
ailing mother. From chopping wood to the trip the market he continues the never ending cycle. The
passage presents itself in a way that suggests the woodcutter enjoys his line of work and feels at
home with what he does for a living. Hard Physical labor is tough in all aspects; therefore it is most

The 66th Oscar For Best Film
Abstract
"Schindler 's List" as the 66th Oscar for best film, adapted from the Australian novelist Thomas
Kennelly's book "Schindler 's List,". The movie truly represent of the German entrepreneur Oscar
Schindler during World War II, through various ways exhaust all his property saved more than 1,200
Jews from the rue story of fascist 's killings. The story plots are authentic and make audience really
touched. Hereinto the music using, shape and use of the lens and Oscar·Schindler 's character
image–building are the three aspects I most admire.
Introduction
Oscar Schindler, from April 28, 1908 to October 9, 1974, is a German, as well as a successful
businessman. He saved the Jews by the use of some mistakes of the German war economy
organization. Using the German war, lure the Jews investment, than hire cheap Jews to work for him
and in this age of full of killing and smoke and make a fortune of money. At the same time he has
protected about 1,200 Jews, about half of Poland survived Jews. Schindler is "small John rabe". In
1958, Jerusalem's holocaust memorial announced Schindler as he righteous national people and
invited him to plant trees in The Righteous National People Congress. On October 9, 1974,
Schindler dead. He was interred at hometown by a Catholicism way and every year there are many
respects of his surviving Jews and their offspring to his soul.

How is suspense created and maintained in The Monkey's Paw...
In The Monkey's Paw written by W.W. Jacobs and The Red Room written by H.G. Wells, there are
many similarities and differences in the ways the stories are written and suspense created. For
example, both stories belong to the horror genre where the supernatural appears due to human
interferences, and both have a fast and frantic climax where the characters' lives are put in jeopardy.
However they do differ in places, one of the key differences being that The Monkey's Paw is written
in third person whereas The Red Room is a narrative.
W.W Jacobs uses many different techniques in The Monkey's Paw to build up an atmosphere of
suspense and uneasiness. One way this is done is by Jacob's description of the White family's
location, a bleak, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jacobs uses his characters even further to build up suspense by describing their physical reaction as
well as their dialogue. Mr White's "brow cold with sweat" shows us how his fear has lead him to the
point of sweating proving that he is afraid of the wish he just made. This also convinces the reader
that the paw holds forces not to be reckoned with and that if Herbert did come back it would be a
horrific rather than cheerful moment. Also Mr White "caught his breath" when ordered to find the
paw, showing that he was scared and dreaded the moment when he would have to wish for his son
back as he knew it would lead to doom. This realisation of the potential hazards they would face if
Herbert were brought back creates fear and suspense. The description of the character's physical
actions is very useful, as it depicts the emotions and thoughts of a character to an extent that
dialogue cannot.
The contrast of light and darkness within the story is used alongside the characters to create
suspense. At the beginning of the story, it was dark, which gave the reader an ominous impression.
For example Mr White was going down the stairs to make a wish to bring Herbert back while it was
so dark, he had to feel his way around. The darkness generates fear, as it is hard to be sure what is
lurking around the corner, and what you might bump in to. Jacobs then contrasts this with the light
of the next morning, which provides a break from the suspense. However it

The Monkey's Paw Character Analysis
"The Monkey's Paw" by W. W. Jacobs and "The Third Wish" by Joan Aiken are similar stories
because of their characters, and contrasting stories because of the wishes. The characters both
receive wishes in a similar way, but the main characters use their wishes in different ways. First, I
will be comparing the ways the main characters receive their wishes. In "The Monkey's Paw" Mr.
White receives his wishes from Sergeant Major Morris, who sells The Monkey's Paw to Mr. White.
Sergeant Major Morris warns Mr. White about the paw and says the first person wished for death on
their third wish. In "The Third Wish" Mr. Peters was driving his car at dusk, hearing a faint cry, so
he stops his car. Then he enters the woods beside him to investigate the noise, finding a white swan
trapped in a thorny bush, and Mr. Peters decides to rescue the swan, but it pecks and hisses at him.
Eventually Mr. Peters saves the swan and it floats away, but then a little man wearing green clothes
and a golden crown appears and grants Mr. Peters 3 wishes. Next, I will be contrasting the
differences between the way the characters use their wishes. I think Mr. White uses his wishes in a
curious kind of way because he isn't really sure whether The Monkey's Paw is real or fake. First Mr.
White wishes for 200 pounds, and isn't taking the paw seriously, so consequences are his son dies in
a machinery ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One life lesson I learned from "The Monkey's Paw" is you should always consider the consequences
of your actions. A life lesson I learned from "The Third Wish" is you should always prepare for the
worst, but hope for the best, like how Mr. Peters saved his last wish until his death, which shows
how he was prepared if something bad was to happen, so he could use the last wish. Finally, I
enjoyed reading both of the stories, but I liked "The Third Wish

How The Writers Create Suspense In The Red Room By H. G....
The Ways in Which the Writers Create an Atmosphere of Tension, Mystery and Suspense in the
Stories The Monkeys Paw and The Red Room Ans. The Monkeys Paw, a very well written gothic
short story by W. W. Jacobs, has an immense variety of elements, which create an atmosphere of
mystery and suspense in the story, which also links and can be compared to the short story, The Red
Room, written by H. G. Wells. The various steps, which the authors took to bring out the nature of
their stories, were indeed similar. We see this even before actually reading the stories and analyzing
them. Observing the history and background of the short stories we find them both written in the
Victorian Age (1812–1870), which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "The Red Room", the theme instead is fear. We learn from the story that it is fear, but we miss it
when we read the title. We find also that the Red Room is a very curious title, as a room can't
actually be red can it? Hence we associate red with fear and danger. Is the room dangerous?
Therefore an overall effect that is overwhelming with curiosity makes the reader read on to solve
unanswered questions. Which, escalates a lot of questions in our head as to where could such a room
be? , Or, why would it be so if it was? . Alliteration is present to stress on the redness of the room.
Hence, we feel more subjected to it, as in, we actually picture the redness of the room. It makes us
think how the color red is linked to fear and danger. So we do get a slight hint from this title about
its theme of fear and mystery. We find the very first line in, "The Red Room" to be, "I can assure
you, that it will take a very tangible ghost to frighten me." Curiosity is peaked here as the reader
notices the word "ghost". Fear, mystery, anxiety and suspense are all interlinked here and are all
called upon, by the author to awaken the readers interest in the story. Thus mystery and suspense are
mounted in the readers mind, only in this first line. "Without, the night was cold and wet," This is
the first

The Relationship Between Richard II and The Myrroure for...
The Relationship Between Richard II and The Myrroure for Magistrates
The relationship between Richard II and The Myrroure for Magistrates is considered here
predominantly in the context of the differences between the two texts.[1] The function of each text is
discussed initially, the didactic purpose of the Myrroure contrasted with the function of
Shakespeare's play as, primarily, theatrical entertainment. The conflicting accounts of certain events
from Richard's reign are looked at subsequently and the manner in which they reflect the different
function of the texts. Finally, consideration is given to the different way in which the Myrroure and
Richard II each reflect upon the theme of kingship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His message can be contradictory, for he does see his murder as 'causeles' (l. 116) and his opponents
as 'traytrous' (l. 114). Yet the overwhelming force of his own argument is that his reign was
characterised by 'vices' (ll. 2 & 34), and that he 'fell / to make the living wise' (l.23). The strict,
consistent rhyme scheme drives home the didactic message of the poem, as does the repeated use of
alliteration, such as 'shame sueth sinne' (l.18).
Shakespeare's Richard is a more complex, contradictory character, reflecting the theatrical purpose
of the play. Richard is 'shown' as well as 'told' which, particularly during the first two Acts, results in
conflicting impressions of him. In Act 1 Scene 1, he appears as the regal, 'impartial' (1.1.115) king,
'not born to sue, but to command' (1.1.196). The following scene begins to undermine this, as 'God's
substitute' (1.2.37) is implicated by Gaunt in the death of the Duke of Gloucester. Richard's
appearance in the richly formal third scene reinforces his initial, regal portrayal but subsequently, his
expressed desire for Gaunt's 'physician... / To help him to his grave immediately' (1.4.58–59) and
Gaunt's own violent indictment of this 'unstaid youth' (2.1.2) finally and fatally undermine the
'showing' of Richard as a majestic, benevolent

The Monkey's Paw And Tell Tale Heart Analysis
"Sometimes painful things can teach us lesson we didn't think we needed to know." This is an
example of the stories; The Monkey's Paw and Tell–Tale Heart. The story, The Monkey's Paw, tells
you about an old friend of Mr. White coming to visit him and his family. He shows them the
monkey's paw and tells them that it can grant you three wishes. They take it even though the friend
warns them not to and the results aren't what they expected. The story, Tell–Tale Heart, tells you
about the narrator who is plotting to kill an old man with the "vulture eye". The narrator doesn't
realize that what he's done will cost him. Although The Monkey's Paw and Tell–Tale Heart stories
may be different, they are also very similar In both the stories I have ... Show more content on

The story says, "–I made up my mind to take the life of the old man and thus rid myself of the eye
forever." The author is giving readers what the narrator will exactly do by the end of the story. While
reading both stories, I saw that the authors wrote a lot of irony, the opposite of what will happen in a
story. When Mr. White makes a wish from the monkey' paw, he wishes for 200 pounds. The
consequences of the Whites' family getting 200 pounds was Herbert dying. This is an example
example of situational irony, the situation turns out to be the opposite of what you thought it would
be, because while the readers thought the money was going to drop out of the sky, the whole other
outcome was different. In the beginning of Tell–Tale Heart, the narrator said, 'I loved the old man.
He had never wronged me." This is an example of verbal irony, you say one thing but really mean
the opposite, because he said he loved him, but meant the opposite because he killed the old man.
The authors of both stories, last but not leastly, use suspenseful moods, the feeling that the story
creates within the reader, and dangerous/mysterious tones, an author's attitude toward the subject or
audience of the story, throughout the story. In The Monkey's Paw, the author says, "...The clock
tick.s. A chair creaks. Finally, a quiet knock is heard. Mrs. White jumps up." This is an example of a
suspenseful mood and mysterious tone. In the

Non Substance Disorder Support Group Meeting
Having thought about which non–substance disorder support group meeting I would like to attend, I
originally choose Sex Addicts Anonymous (SA) because I knew someone decades ago who became
a member, and knowing the person well, I have been curious about the meetings for some time now.
However, the SA meetings are closed, in retrospect this makes sense for a variety of reasons, and
since I could not tell them that I considered myself to qualify as a sex addict, I had to make another
choice. My next choice was an Overeaters Anonymous meeting because there was one at the
Atonement Church, of which I am familiar. Once again plans changed, and I was destined to arrive
at the Wyomissing Church of the Brethren at 2200 State Hill Road. Consequently, this was a
Wednesday evening meeting at 5:15 p.m. I live across from Centre Park in Town and I got stuck in
an obscene amount of traffic trying to get on the Warren Street Bypass. At one point, I figured that I
maybe could turn around and try the Thursday OE meeting at Atonement because I was getting so
anxious worrying where exactly I had to go, and if I would walk in late, and this I definitely did not
want to do. Deciding to press on, I pulled into the parking lot at 5:17, so I continued into what I
presumed to be the front lobby. There were signs strewn about regarding community meetings and
such, but nothing about OE specifically, and no signs of life. Thankfully, my meeting instincts
kicked in, and I stood still, calmed

The Monkey's Paw Poem Analysis
What would you do if you had the opportunity to make 3 wishes? Would you do it? The story "The
Monkey's Paw" by W.W Jacobs starts with Mr.White's good friend, Sergeant Major Morris coming
into their house one day and introduces the Monkey's Paw to them that he got from India that he did
not want anymore and also tried to sell. The Monkey's Paw could grant 3 wishes but some say it
brings good luck with grave consequences. This is what happened to the White family. The
Monkey's Paw brought great calamity to the whole family. In the end, I think that the father
Mr.White is the most responsible for the family's sorrow. Even though he knew there were heavy
consequences if he made a wish. For example, the sergeant says on page 683, "The first ... Show

Mrs.White was the one who convinced Mr.White to make another wish to bring their son back. For
instance, on page 684 Mrs.White says, "Wish! She cried in a strong voice". One can assume that she
was demanding Mr.White to make a wish. Another example is she insisted to make another wish.
On page 684 it says, "We had the first wish granted, why not the second". This means she really
wants to make another wish. Additionally, according to the text, it points out on page 684 she says,
"The paw! She cried wildly. The monkey's paw!" This is important because this evidence proves she
was the one who brought it up to make another wish. As a result, the wife could also be accountable

The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs
Would you want three wishes to be granted to you? You probably said yes, but have you ever
thought of anything that could go wrong with your three wishes? In W.W. Jacobs, "The Monkey's
Paw", the story is about the White family who received a monkey's paw that allows three wishes to
be made. They find out that this monkey's paw is one big troublemaker that causes havoc and unrest.
Overall, "The Monkey's Paw", had very distinct and believable characters and a great plot that was
fraught with danger and suspense. One element I like in "The Monkey's Paw" was it had very
distinct characters. For instance, Mrs. White's unawareness of what's going to happen really
contributes to the outcome of the story. If it weren't for Mrs. White's naïve and unwary personality,
the book probably would have been different as this quote suggests. "'Wish!' she cried in a strong
voice. 'It's foolish and wicked,' said Mr. White. 'Wish!' repeated his wife."(192) When she had
forced Mr. White to make this wish she did not know that Herbert would come back as an undead
corpse. Every mom wants her kid, but she did not realize that bringing her son would make things
even worst. Along with Mrs. White's unwariness, Mr. White's interest in the paw without a doubt
contributes to the developing story. I deem that Mr. White paid no attention to the warnings Sergeant
Morris conveyed. "'Pitch it in the fire like a sensible man' said Morris. Mr. White shook his head and
examined his new possession closely. 'How

Summary Of William Jacobs The Monkey's Paw
In "The Monkey's Paw", author William Jacobs conveys the message that fate rules peoples' lives,
and that those who try to interfere with fate do so at their own peril. This premise is clearly shown as
the plot of this clever story unfolds. Sergeant Morris reluctantly gave Mr. White the monkey's paw,
but warned him of the consequences. The White family playfully wished for two hundred pounds
and when nothing happened immediately, they dismissed the sergeant's story as a fairy tale.
However, the events of the next day show the cruel irony of the wish. A man from the company that
the son, Herbert, worked for, arrived at the White's House with the terrible news that Herbert had
been killed in an accident on the job. The man went on to say that

Anyone who receives notice of a loved ones death is never expected to take it lightly. In Kate
Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," Mrs. Mallard is informed of her husbands "death" as gently as
possible, and immediately she understands the enormous significance this loss will have on her life.
Unlike many widow's, her feelings of utter devastation do not last. Mrs. Mallard's sobs of loss turn
to cries of joy after she reflects upon her own character and discovers truths about her marriage. As
any woman would, Mrs. Mallard initially "wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment," (227) at
the news of her husband's death. Her weeping almost seems forced as Mrs. Mallard's true character
is revealed later on. She is described as "young, with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This personal confession shows that Mrs. Mallard, though she will mourn at first, now is free to
"live for herself," (228) not for her imposing husband. Before her husband's death, Mrs. Mallard
believed she was in a healthy, normal marriage. This death revealed to her how while she cared
about her husband, she despised the lack of freedom her marriage had given her. All of the
realizations that Mrs. Mallard reaches during her time of reflection shows the readers exactly why
she will no longer mourn the death of her husband. The reader might question as to why Mrs.
Mallard's feelings towards her husband's death change so quickly. Was she previously unaware of
the "subtle and elusive" (227) thoughts that made her believe that this death might be a blessing in
disguise? Mrs. Mallard, before her husband's death, had a romanticized view of her marriage. While
she believed she loved Brently and was happy, after his death she became aware of the freedom she
would now experience without a controlling husband. The "powerful will bending hers in that blind
persistence" (228) would no longer be present. Mrs. Mallard was aware of her yearnings of
independence and joy, but would never voice them while locked into her marriage with Brantley.
While at first, it may seem as Mrs. Mallard was unaware of these feelings, the death of her husband
was just the catalyst that allowed her deepest feelings to be revealed and her dreams of
independence to finally

The Monkey's Paw And The Keys Of Destiny Analysis
In both stories "The Monkey's Paw" and "The Keys of Destiny" they prove that money isn't the
source of happiness. Even though they have the same theme the two authors get this theme across in
two completely different ways. With the story "The Monkey's Paw" the author uses the death of
Herbert (the son of one of main character) to reveal the theme, while in "The Keys of Destiny" the
author uses the keys of destiny to get the same effect. The main reason that the themes are presented
differently is because of the craft moves that are being used. For example, in "The Monkey's Paw"
the author W.W. Jacobs used revealing actions and in "The Keys of Destiny" the author Neil Philip
uses symbolism.
The main factor in the different ways that the two authors got the theme across was the craft moves.
In "The Monkey's Paw" W.W. Jacobs uses revealing actions to get the main theme across. In the
story one of Mr. White's friends tried to throw out a mummified paw of a monkey because he claims
it was cursed. Disregarding that it was cursed and can cause consequences if he uses it he asks for
money which he would regret later in the story. W.W Jacobs shows this when he writes, "'I wish for
two hundred pounds,' said the old man distinctly."(1.5) this quote is just the first action of where he
wishes for the money the revealing part comes later when the Whites obtains the money. The
revealing action is when the Whites hear about the death of their son that goes back to their wish for
money,

Comparison Of Edgar Allan Poe And Jacob's Story
Have you ever did something, then felt horrible later on?like guilty? Guilt is a horrible feeling, Even
more so if someone's life was ended by something you did. Edgar Allan Poe and W. W. Jacob's
story's both inform us how powerful guilt can be, in both, there's story's someone dies and there is
an extreme amount of guilt. In the monkeys paw, there's a home that house's three people, the
mother, the father, the son and the sergeant(the friend). One of the fathers old friend's comes to visit
and tell stories of his journey. He talks about the pyramids, interesting people, different states and
many other things over some drinks. The sergeant started telling a story about something called the
monkey's paw, which is what really peaked the father's interest. The sergeant said it would grant you

The father's friend knew there was no way he would drop it so the sergeant gave him the paw, but
before letting go he told him there were consequences if he used it. It was getting late and the
sergeant had to leave. After he left the son went to bed so he would be ready for work in the
morning, but the father and mother stayed up talking about the paw. A hour pasted and the father
wished for money not thinking about what bad may happen. "I wish for two hundred pounds," said
the old man distinctly. (part 1, W.W. Jacobs). The next morning the son went to work at the saw mill
like an ordinary day. the parents laying in there yard reading a knitting were talking about how it
didn't work and it was a tall tale when out of the blue, the father and mother received a visit from a
stranger that works with there son at the mill. The stranger told the parents there was an accident at
the mill. Both the father and mother dropped there things and asked what happened and if there son
was okay. He hesitated, but finally got the courage to say the news. 'Your son had a accident

Comparing Tell-Tale Heart And The Monkey's Paw
The "Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Monkey's Paw" both convey suspicion and growing fear of what
will happen "The Monkey's Paw" is about a monkey's paw that grants three wishes, but in the worst
way. The "Tell–Tale Heart" is about a man who murders an old man, but his guilty conscience
betrayed him by making him hear the old man's heart after he died. "The Monkey's Paw" creates
suspense through a slow paced timeline, and "The Tell–Tale Heart" creates suspense throughout the
plot, the murder, and finally the heart beating after death causing him to surrender and confess.
"The Monkey's Paw" is very slow paced and generates suspense through it. "The Monkey's Paw" is

How are "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Monkey's Paw" Cause and effect relationship Alike?"The
Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Monkey's Paw" Cause–and–Effect Relationship are alike because they
both have that feeling of suspense that gives you chills. I think the suspense is like this because they
both have one person going mad and dieing in both stories. The Cause–and–Effect relationship
between "The Tell–Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe and "The Monkey's Paw" by William Wymark
Jacobs, has a very much feeling cause of suspense between the characters.

The young man does love the old man that never did him wrong, but the eye of the old man that
vulture eye was driving him mad. So late during the night he would go and spy on the old man while
he was sleeping But, one night he had killed the old man thus getting rid of the old mans eye forever
up until the police come and he goes nuts and tells the police where the body is to the old man. The
story causes the suspense by the young man going so mad over this old mans eye that he calls
"Vulture eye" and then later ends up killing the old man to rid himself of the eye forever. "I think it
was his eye! Yes, it was! He had the eye of a vulture–a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever
it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees– very gradually– I made up my mind to take
the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever." Edgar Allen Poe P.g. 89.The effect on
the man is that eye is making him go mad, mad enough to kill the old man over just his eye. If the
eye the cause of the man going mad was not here, maybe just maybe the man wouldn't be mad crazy

Flip A Coin Strategy
The two strategies I played against are to defect or cooperate when playing the Flip–a–coin strategy
and the Massive Retaliatory Strike. In both cases when I cooperated one–hundred percent, I had a
huge loss to the computer, my score for the flip coin toss was 21 to the computers 86 when I choose
just to cooperate. In the massive retaliatory strike when I cooperated all the time my score was 60
and the machine was 60, so in this case, no one won, but we tied or it is a win–win scenario. In the

In the case of the monkey, doesn't scream just one time, the monkey wins by not screaming.
However, over time, the monkey overall wins by cooperating and shouting, to protect others and
themselves. An example of defecting is two partners in crime, one rats the other one out they win by
getting less jail time, and the other loses. However, if they were both to cooperate, they might both
win, by getting no jail time, since one was needed to convict the other. The one–shot game is best to
cheat, defect, not cooperate, but in the games with many different rounds, it is better to cooperate
and defect only when the opponent defects. In a sense, it seems better to play tit for tat, since both
parties win, since if you treat someone nicely than they treat you nicely. Real life examples of
people cooperating out of self–interest are pretty much, everyone, I am cooperating out of self–

Analysis Of The Film ' Roman Polanski '
Roman Polanski – noted for being an iconic figure in the film world – is known for producing great
films such as China Town, and The Pianist. Of those two, it is argued that, The Pianist is his best
work. This is because this film has close ties to Polanski's roots. Born in Paris, France in 1933, his
father was a Polish–Jew and his mother was Catholic. Polanski's family moved to Krakow, Poland
in 1936. Unfortunately this move would negatively impact the Polanski family, forever. In 1936, the
Nazi occupation of Poland began, starting with the invasion Krakow – it is known for being a
Jewish city. Having little money and virtually no time to escape, the Polanski family was forced to
stay in what would eventually become known as the Krakow Ghetto.
Polanski was merely a young child when he was forced to watch his mother being taken away by the
SS to a Nazi labor camp. As for his father, he was eventually taken as well. With Roman Polanski
being forced to fend for himself, he had to abide by Nazi rule, hiding from them the fact that he was
a Jew. Fortunately, for Polanski's genetics he looked more like a true German than he did a Jew,
which made it easier for him to survive in Krakow. In 1943, Roman Polanski escaped the ghetto,
and survived the remainder of the war using the name Romek Wilk with the help of some Polish
Roman Catholic Families. When the war ended in 1945 Roman was reunited with his father. These
events in Polanski's early childhood ultimately

The Monkey's Paw Suspense Essay
Title In many stories there is a sense of tension and excitement. This is suspense which makes the
reader curious of the outcome of the story or future events. Suspense can be found when the author
uses repeating phrases, uses vivid words to describe dramatic actions, or explains a character's
anxiety and fear. Suspense is created by authors with a technique called, characterizing anxiety and
fear. When authors use this technique they describe what a character is doing to portray fear. This
advances in the reader's curiosity. For instance, in the " The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs, The
White family is given a magical monkey's paw that grants three wishes to Mr. White. His first wish
results in their son's death. Mrs. White forced Mr. White to bring their son back to life with the

For example, in the short story " The Tell–Tale Heart" the narrator tries to prove he is not crazy by
telling a story. He is troubled by the eye of an old man he loves. He just couldn't stand the eye so he
decided to carefully murder the man. When the police came to the house the narrator played it cool
and the officers believed him. But, when he sat down he started to hear a heartbeat that got "louder!
Louder! Louder!–"(Poe 94) A key reason for this quote was to show that the heartbeat was starting
to get too loud to bear. This quote makes the reader curious of what the narrator will do when he
can't bear the sound any longer. Certainly, that allows suspense to be created.
Ultimately, suspense techniques can be found in many works. Repeating phrases, vivid and dramatic
descriptions, and characterizing anxiety and fear are three of the many techniques and author uses to
create suspense. Suspense can take something otherwise very bland and make it interesting and

The Monkey's Paw: Time Structure Essay examples
"The Monkey's Paw" is a short story which moves around the edges of a ghost story and the
uncanny. In general terms, the narration immerses the reader into a frightening atmosphere in which
the reader can realise that there are certain elements that make the reading something more than a
spooky tale; for example the way time is treated in the structure of the story. It is peculiar the way
W.W. Jacobs manages to create a rather concrete story by making the reader fill so many gaps. In
our opinion, that is due to the fact that there is a complete focus on the development of the story
since the arrival of the monkey's paw, and that there are several omissions of facts in the beginning
and in the end of the story, which is no coincidence. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

If the reader looks closely, the only part that is being told of this story is the middle, that is to say
neither the beginning (the origins of the monkey paw) nor the end (Mr. White final wish and what
followed). In the first case, the reader is free to choose how much time passed since the arrival to the
monkey paw to the White's house, and even more what happened during that time. There are other
factors that can influence the reader's mind in the beginning such as the influence of alcohol over the
veracity of the story. In the other case, the reader has to come to an ending based on the only clue
that is behind: the knocks on the door.
There are some other cases in this story which involve time, such as the actual time that passed
between the departure of Hebert to his job and the arrival of the man who announce his death, fact
that can even determine the credibility of the story told by the narrator, which not only make the
reader interact with the story itself, but also it makes them become a crucial interface between the
words and the meanings behind them.
This works as a demonstration of what Sartre defined as engagé literature: reading is a
commitment between writer and reader. In the case of "The Monkey's Paw", the story wouldn't be as
interesting if the reader wouldn't have had the chances agreed by the reader to fill the gaps. That
engagement makes the factor of time appears as a whole unit,

Death Of An Hour By Kate Chopin
Death is a natural part of life, and, therefore, a common theme in many literary works. Kate Chopin,
the author of "The Story of an Hour," explores the theme of death by unfolding the story of a woman
whose husband dies in a tragic accident. While the wife initially weeps with grief, her emotions
soon transform into feelings of secret delight over her new–found freedom. In his story "The
Monkey 's Paw," W. W. Jacobs addresses the theme of death in a much darker manner. A holy man
has placed a curse on a decaying monkey 's paw. The White family, who gains possession of this
paw, has been granted three wishes, the first of which seemingly ends in the death of the son
Herbert, devastating his mother and father. While the characters in "The Story of an Hour" and "The
Monkey 's Paw" cope with the deaths of their loved ones in very different ways, both Chopin and
Jacobs explore the theme of death through imagery and symbolism. In her work "The Story of an
Hour," Chopin uses both imagery and symbolism to examine the effects of a spouse 's death on the
loved one left behind. When Louise Mallard is faced with the untimely death of her husband Brently
Mallard, she sobs uncontrollably "with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister 's arms" (par. 3).
These emotion–filled sounds of weeping are evidence of the widow 's fierce grief. The imagery
continues as Chopin compares Louise 's response to a violent storm, "a storm of grief, " (par. 3) to
encourage the reader to visualize the heart

The Importance Of Foreshadowing In The Monkey's Paw
"The Monkey's Paw" is a supernatural short story by author W. W. Jacobs first published in England
in 1902. In the story, three wishes granted to the owner of the monkey's paw, but the wishes come
with an enormous price for interfering with fate. I agree on how some occasions the events are
giving away as you can see in this sentence, how the friend gives Mr. White a magical wish granting
monkey paw, now we all know what happens next something always goes wrong on granting
wishes. It gives most of its story away before it happens such as his son saying something like he
will not see what happens to the monkey paw.

White wishes for two hundred pounds, Herbert says that he doesn't see the money and he bets he

In conclusion, "Hark at the wind, 'said Mr. White, who, having seen a fatal mistake after it was too
late, was amiably desirous of preventing his son from seeing it."
This quote displays foreshadowing because during this event he makes a mistake and doesn't realize
it until after it's too late. Also "'I wish for two hundred pounds,' said the old man distinctly. A fine
crash from the piano greeted the words, interrupted by a shuddering cry from the old man. His wife
and son ran toward him. 'It moved,' he cried, with a glance of disgust at the object as it lay on the
floor. 'As I wished, it twisted in my hands like a snake.' 'Well, I don't see the money,' said his son as
he picked it up and placed it on the table, 'and I bet I never shall.' "
In this quote, when Mr. White wishes for two hundred pounds, Herbert says that he doesn't see the
money and he bets he never will. The reader is able to make predictions of what could happen later
in the story from hints and clues in the

Alcoholics Anonymous Essay
The phrase "early A.A." refers to the early fellowships and meetings held in Akron, Ohio. These
meetings took place between 1935 and 1939 when Alcoholics Anonymous was an integral part of "A
First Century Christian Fellowship" (Pitman 56). A.A. was the outcome of a meeting between Bill
W., a New York stockbroker, and Dr. Bob S., an Akron surgeon. Both had been hopeless alcoholics
(Fingarette 14).
Before this time, Bill and Dr. Bob had each been in contact with the Oxford Group, a mostly
nonalcoholic fellowship that emphasized universal spiritual values in daily living(Fingarette 15).
During this period, the noted episcopal clergyman, Dr. Samuel Shoemaker, headed the group. Under

Meanwhile, in New York, Dr. Bob and Bill had organized an over–all trusteeship for the growing

office in New York to handle inquires and to distribute the A.A. book ( Fingarette 30). An article
was carried by Liberty magazine in the fall of 1939, resulting in some 800 urgent calls for help. At
the year's end, the membership stood at 2,000 (Pitman 83).
Then, in March of 1941, the Saturday Evening Post featured an excellent article about A.A. and the
response was enormous (Pitman 84). By the close of that year, the membership had jumped to
6,000, and the number of groups multiplied in proportion. The Fellowship was spreading across the
U.S. and Canada. By 1950, one hundred thousand recovered alcoholics could be found worldwide
(Pitman 85). As spectacular as this was, the period of 1940–1950 was nonetheless one of great
uncertainty (Wekesser 42). Could the mercurial alcoholics live and work together in groups? This
was the unsolved problem. By 1946, however, it had already become possible to draw sound
conclusions about the kind of attitude, practice and function that would best suit A.A.'s purpose
(Fingarette 40). Bill codified those principles, which had emerged from the strenuous group
experience, in what

Irony in this story is a key to upcoming events that take place. The symbols of irony in this story all
represent death in some way or another. The graveyard in the middle of a field, which had six graves
and it, was a family graveyard. The Grandmother remembering the old plantation house with the six
columns right after they passed through Tombsboro. The tower in which the family stopped to eat
(Red Sammy's) looked like a tomb. The car in which The Misfit drove looked lock a black hearse.
The grave that The Misfit dug with the tip of his shoe while talking with the grandmother
symbolizes the grave in which she is about to be put in. Finally the ditch in which the car runs into
represents a grave because they cannot get out and will stay there in that hole in the ground.
Throughout the story we see the events unfold and learn a lot about each character. The grandmother
is a self–serving, manipulative, and righteous old woman that represents the old way of life. The

represents the evil in the world and how it affects both the old way as well as the new. Flannery

Different Kinds Of Information Involving Macro Environment
In this project I am going to offer different kinds of information involving Macro environment (or
known as PEST) information collected in the past 10 years till present, such as, Economic growth
and decline, social values and of course the Warsaw lifestyle, demographic information and graphics
projecting different data such as age range, family status and the various ethnic groups that we can

information, among other interesting data that would be great to know before visiting the great city
of Warsaw.
Before getting into deep information about the city, I am going to first talk about many interesting
facts about Warsaw, Poland, which many people may not know when they first go to visit this city
but I do find important for people to learn the history so they can really appreciate the city once they

city was founded in 1300 and came under the Polish rule in 1526. It became the capital of Poland in
1596, taking over Krakow. The city of Warsaw during the World War II was almost completely

Oskar Schindler 's Death Of The Jewish Ghetto
Many words can be used to describe Oskar Schindler; partier, alcoholic, womanizer, etc, but the
most unlikely word that can be used is savior, which he proved to be in the 1940s. Schindler was
definitely a sinner, but he did the unthinkable at the time, "He [Schindler] was no saint. And yet, the
same man would prove to have depths of courage and humanity rare at any time–even rarer during
the time in which he lived." (Roberts, pg. 6). During the grueling years of the Holocaust and World
War II, Oskar Schindler proved that love and kindness still existed by rescuing over 1,000 Jewish
residents of Krakow, Poland. By doing this alone, the Nazis would have killed him because at that
time, it was even illegal to be touching a Jew, let alone saving them. One major factor that led to the
saving of the Jews was the liquidation of the Krakow Jewish Ghetto, "Schindler witnessed a few
hours of beastiality with which the liquidation [of Krakow] was executed. The horror of what he saw
undoubtedly played a role in his indignation and his unfailing and compassion with the persecuted
[Jews]." (Thompson. pg. 138). After the invasion of Poland, the Nazis set up several ghettos around
the country, one of which was in Krakow, where they held Jews. Eventually these ghettos didn't
seem worthy of Adolph Hitler's "Final Solution" so these ghettos were liquidated and thousands of
it's residents were massacred and sent to concentration camps, Schindler experienced one of these
liquidations. Oskar

as Lakesnam Villa. The story seems to be set around the 1900's. The first section of the story covers
a single night within the lives of the Whites. The next section covers the following day. The last part

Whites that the paw was specifically designed to harm the people who choose wish on it. He has
wished on it himself but is not certain if he would do it again. Since the paw could not presumably
really have magic powers, what damage could be done by counting in on it, only for fun? Well, Mr.
White does decide to make a wish, for two hundred pounds the amount of money required to pay off
the family home. The very next day, Herbert is killed in an accident at the factory where he works.
To compensate the Whites for his death, Herbert 's employers provides them with two hundred
pounds, the exact amount Mr. White wished for. When Mrs. White begs Mr. White to wish Herbert

undead Herbert is really at the door, there 's a ton of suspense over whether Mr. White can go

his fear of his wife. This part is a very frustrating. Mr. White does wish, though we are not told

that Mr. White wished Herbert back to death. Just in case you were thinking that

generation Q writes comments in Internet, as a result, spends more and more time online. The writer
believes that generation Q must be doing itself a favor, and America a favor, if it demanded answers
and results from candidates to many issues the "Greediest Generation" is leaving them, specifically,
huge budget deficit, climate change and Social Security reform. And the author concludes the essay
by saying that Generation Q does not have enough courage to handle all those problems the previous
generation is leaving them. A week after the release of "Generation Q", Rob Fishman, Cornell
University graduate, shares his opinion on Generation Q. In his essay, "Generation of Generation Q"
Fishman underlines the fact that our generation is complacent and there are excuses for it (73).

Explain The Theme Of Foreshadowing In 'Monkey's Paw'
In the short story Monkey's Paw, W.W. Jacobs creates a tale of a man who's curiousness leads to a
tragic ending. He uses this tale to illustrate a theme of how to much curiosity can be dangerous.
Jacobs utilizes many different literary techniques to explain his theme. At the beginning of the story
W.W. Jacob uses foreshadowing that hints at the decision Mr.White will make at the climax of the
story. The title "Monkey's Paw" symbolizes curiosity, due to the fact that monkeys are curious
animals . Also, Mr.White's yearning to go to India symbolizes his curiosity about the rest of the
world and how he wants to travel to and experience exotic areas. In addition to symbolism, the
setting of this story also plays a necessary role in helping Jacobs portray his message. Many people
may believe Jacobs theme is the downfall of greedy people or the importance of being content. But
many contradictions appear with a deeper look into the story. Jacobs utilizes foreshadowing, title,
setting, character, and various others symbols to emphasize his theme of the dangers of curiosity.
The first indication of the theme emerges at the beginning of the story when Mr.White and his son,
Herbert, are playing chess. While they were playing chess, Jacobs describes Mr. White's technique
by explaining he "possessed ideas about the game involving radical chances" (Jacobs 17). This
scene foreshadows Mr.White's willingness to make high risk decisions to satisfy his curiousness.
Mr.White is curious if his high risk ideas would eventually lead him to win the match of chess.
This quality would have major consequences when Sergeant Major brought the Monkey's Paw into
the story. Sergeant Major explained to Mr.White that the person holding up the monkey paw could
get three wishes. Even though Sergeant Major warned Mr. White of

Torture Flaws
The Hordes of Genghis Khan and the British Government may appear completely different.
However, when examined with a trained eye, one will find that they do share one major similarity.
That being their extensive use of torture. Now, in this day and age torture is quite the hot button
topic, this is especially true with the recent possibility of the US going back into torture. Although
some may think America can use torture, it is ultimately foolish for the U.S. to utilize this brutal
tactic, as it proves to be a "Monkey's Paw" for the entire nation. Security of Nation As widely
condemned as torture is, some do argue that, despite its myriad of flaws it does achieve results. An
example, these supporters commonly use is that since the Bush Administration (2001–2009) allowed
it there has been a tremendous absence of terror attacks within the US. Thus seemingly proving that
torture was the real reason that terror attacks stopped in the US. However, this mentality carries
copious flaws along with it. The main one being that "since the Obama Administration(2009–2017)
stopped using torture there has been tranquility as well" (Gutting, McMahan 17). ... Show more

This causes multiple famous anti–torture supporters to collectively agree, that "Torture is justifiable,
only when used to protect others" (Gutting, McMahan 5). So in theory, if someone planted a bomb
in Times Square and the only way for the authorities to find it was to use torture, then in that
scenario, it's alright because it's saving the lives of others. However, while this type of analogy may
work for other situations, but it does not work in the defense of torture. This is due to the fact that
countless reliable sources have given valid examples of information being gained without the need
to use torture. Such as the men who helped locate Saddam Hussein by using non–violent
interrogation

Here are some key points about how suspense is created and maintained in W.W. Jacobs' short story "The Monkey's Paw":- The setting of the White family's bleak, isolated cottage in the middle of the moor contributes to an ominous atmosphere from the start. Their isolation makes them vulnerable.- Mysterious elements like the monkey's paw itself and the unknown forces it represents create an air of uncertainty and danger. The reader doesn't know exactly what will happen. - Jacobs describes the characters' physical reactions like sweating and catching their breath to convey their rising fear and suspense for the reader as events unfold.- Dialogue between the characters, like Mr. White ordering his

  • 1. Man Against God in Moby Dick Essay Man Against God in Moby Dick Thee Works Cited "God, God is against thee, old man; forbear! 'tis an ill voyage! ill begun; ill continued..." (418). Humanity has embarked on a journey. A journey of choice that will lead into the end days; one which will determine mankind's fate and weave the mat of life to completion. Humanity, like Captain Ahab, has chosen to follow the direction of his own desires rather than reason and faith. Refusing to hear the voice of reason, man has seared Starbuck–his conscience and morals–to "a lipless, unfeatured blank" (459). Following the desires of the flesh, he has thrown out the compass and declared himself "lord of the level loadstone" (425). And like Captain Ahab, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like Ahab, however, realizing the power in his hands, man has taken it and used it to his own purposes. He has chosen a path of vengeance, hatred, and disobedience, "[a]nd even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind" (240). The consequences of rebellion against the will of God are heavy. "For the wages of sin is death... Or know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, His servants ye are to whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death or of obedience unto righteousness?" (246). Mankind has chosen disobedience in life, and he will suffer, as Ahab suffered–"voicelessly as Turkish mutes bowstring their victims"–the humiliating end, the condemnation of God and all Creation for that disobedience: "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die..." (248). Just as Ahab died a humbling, seemingly pointless death, so mankind will suffer the humiliation of a pointless and unsung fall. The coming result is predictable both in Ahab's case and in mankind's: "Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall" (936). Ahab chooses to ignore the premonitions, omens, and prophecies of his coming fall. He refuses to give in to the voice of reason every time Starbuck offers him a way out. • 3. Core Values Of Conflict : The Wind That Shakes The Barley... Core Values in Conflict Each human in the world has a set of values around which one bases their actions and opinions on. These sets of values vary from person to person. My core values are family, friends, and education. The only negative aspect of my values is that they tend to be in conflict with each other often. There are days where I have to choose between friends and family or education, and it is often a tough decision to make. In life, everyone has to make decisions on whether one value is more important than another, and characters in stories and plays have those decisions to make as well. Damien in The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Wanda in The Legend both have conflicting values based on the situations they find themselves in. In Stanislaw Wyspaniaki's The Legend, Wanda was the adopted daughter of King Krak, who passes away during the first act. She, being the only heir to the throne that is still alive, now has to deal with all of the problems. While Krak is dying, the Germans are also invading the castle because the German prince wants to marry Wanda, but she declined and so they decided to take over Poland. When Smiech tells her that that the Germans are very close and will take her, she responds by saying, "Silence, I will plunge this knife into my chest before then, rather than have to love them" (Wyspianki, 30). She clearly says that she would rather die than get married to the German prince. After Krak dies, she begins to weep over his dead body. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Examples Of Foreshadowing In Horror Stories A key element in horror stories is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing will make readers want to read more and it will also create suspense. Foreshadowing is nearly same in horror stories. Foreshadowing in horror stories such as "THE LANDLADY", "THE MONKEY'S PAW" and "THE TELL– TALE HEARTS" and "The Hitchhiker" are very important and creates suspense for the readers which makes the readers want to read more. The Landlady is mystery story written by Roald Dahl and incorporates lots of foreshadowing. The first foreshadowing I found was when Bill pressed the doorbell and in a second, the Landlady popped out of the door – according to the Landlady text, lines 113– 118. This seems weird because normally you have to wait half– minute before the door opens (lines 119–120) but this seems like she is waiting next to door so someone would show up. Next, one foreshadowing you may have missed was when the Landlady interrupted what Billy was saying and was trying to change the topic, according to lines 363– 373, "Now wait a minute," he said. "Wait just a minute. Mulholland ... Christopher Mulholland ... wasn't that the name of the Eton schoolboy who was on a walking–tour through the West Country, and then all of a sudden ..."– Billy Milk?" she said. "And sugar?"– Landlady. She was trying to change the conversation which is pretty weird the reader will start suspecting if the Landlady is hiding something. Furthermore, according to lines 423–424, the Landlady says, "You have the most beautiful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The movie truly represent of the German entrepreneur Oscar Schindler during World War II, through various ways exhaust all his property saved more than 1,200 Jews from the rue story of fascist 's killings. The story plots are authentic and make audience really touched. Hereinto the music using, shape and use of the lens and Oscar·Schindler 's character image–building are the three aspects I most admire. Introduction Oscar Schindler, from April 28, 1908 to October 9, 1974, is a German, as well as a successful businessman. He saved the Jews by the use of some mistakes of the German war economy organization. Using the German war, lure the Jews investment, than hire cheap Jews to work for him and in this age of full of killing and smoke and make a fortune of money. • 11. How is suspense created and maintained in The Monkey's Paw... In The Monkey's Paw written by W.W. Jacobs and The Red Room written by H.G. Wells, there are many similarities and differences in the ways the stories are written and suspense created. For example, both stories belong to the horror genre where the supernatural appears due to human interferences, and both have a fast and frantic climax where the characters' lives are put in jeopardy. However they do differ in places, one of the key differences being that The Monkey's Paw is written in third person whereas The Red Room is a narrative. W.W Jacobs uses many different techniques in The Monkey's Paw to build up an atmosphere of suspense and uneasiness. One way this is done is by Jacob's description of the White family's location, a bleak, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jacobs uses his characters even further to build up suspense by describing their physical reaction as well as their dialogue. Mr White's "brow cold with sweat" shows us how his fear has lead him to the point of sweating proving that he is afraid of the wish he just made. This also convinces the reader that the paw holds forces not to be reckoned with and that if Herbert did come back it would be a horrific rather than cheerful moment. Also Mr White "caught his breath" when ordered to find the paw, showing that he was scared and dreaded the moment when he would have to wish for his son back as he knew it would lead to doom. This realisation of the potential hazards they would face if Herbert were brought back creates fear and suspense. The description of the character's physical actions is very useful, as it depicts the emotions and thoughts of a character to an extent that dialogue cannot. The contrast of light and darkness within the story is used alongside the characters to create suspense. At the beginning of the story, it was dark, which gave the reader an ominous impression. For example Mr White was going down the stairs to make a wish to bring Herbert back while it was so dark, he had to feel his way around. The darkness generates fear, as it is hard to be sure what is lurking around the corner, and what you might bump in to. Jacobs then contrasts this with the light of the next morning, which provides a break from the suspense. However it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Monkey's Paw Character Analysis "The Monkey's Paw" by W. W. Jacobs and "The Third Wish" by Joan Aiken are similar stories because of their characters, and contrasting stories because of the wishes. The characters both receive wishes in a similar way, but the main characters use their wishes in different ways. First, I will be comparing the ways the main characters receive their wishes. In "The Monkey's Paw" Mr. White receives his wishes from Sergeant Major Morris, who sells The Monkey's Paw to Mr. White. Sergeant Major Morris warns Mr. White about the paw and says the first person wished for death on their third wish. In "The Third Wish" Mr. Peters was driving his car at dusk, hearing a faint cry, so he stops his car. Then he enters the woods beside him to investigate the noise, finding a white swan trapped in a thorny bush, and Mr. Peters decides to rescue the swan, but it pecks and hisses at him. Eventually Mr. Peters saves the swan and it floats away, but then a little man wearing green clothes and a golden crown appears and grants Mr. Peters 3 wishes. Next, I will be contrasting the differences between the way the characters use their wishes. I think Mr. White uses his wishes in a curious kind of way because he isn't really sure whether The Monkey's Paw is real or fake. First Mr. White wishes for 200 pounds, and isn't taking the paw seriously, so consequences are his son dies in a machinery ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One life lesson I learned from "The Monkey's Paw" is you should always consider the consequences of your actions. A life lesson I learned from "The Third Wish" is you should always prepare for the worst, but hope for the best, like how Mr. Peters saved his last wish until his death, which shows how he was prepared if something bad was to happen, so he could use the last wish. • 15. How The Writers Create Suspense In The Red Room By H. G.... The Ways in Which the Writers Create an Atmosphere of Tension, Mystery and Suspense in the Stories The Monkeys Paw and The Red Room Ans. The Monkeys Paw, a very well written gothic short story by W. W. Jacobs, has an immense variety of elements, which create an atmosphere of mystery and suspense in the story, which also links and can be compared to the short story, The Red Room, written by H. G. Wells. The various steps, which the authors took to bring out the nature of their stories, were indeed similar. We see this even before actually reading the stories and analyzing them. Observing the history and background of the short stories we find them both written in the Victorian Age (1812–1870), which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "The Red Room", the theme instead is fear. We learn from the story that it is fear, but we miss it when we read the title. We find also that the Red Room is a very curious title, as a room can't actually be red can it? Hence we associate red with fear and danger. Is the room dangerous? Therefore an overall effect that is overwhelming with curiosity makes the reader read on to solve unanswered questions. Which, escalates a lot of questions in our head as to where could such a room be? , Or, why would it be so if it was? . Alliteration is present to stress on the redness of the room. Hence, we feel more subjected to it, as in, we actually picture the redness of the room. It makes us think how the color red is linked to fear and danger. So we do get a slight hint from this title about its theme of fear and mystery. We find the very first line in, "The Red Room" to be, "I can assure you, that it will take a very tangible ghost to frighten me." Curiosity is peaked here as the reader notices the word "ghost". Fear, mystery, anxiety and suspense are all interlinked here and are all called upon, by the author to awaken the readers interest in the story. Thus mystery and suspense are mounted in the readers mind, only in this first line. "Without, the night was cold and wet," This is the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Relationship Between Richard II and The Myrroure for Magistrates The relationship between Richard II and The Myrroure for Magistrates is considered here predominantly in the context of the differences between the two texts.[1] The function of each text is discussed initially, the didactic purpose of the Myrroure contrasted with the function of Shakespeare's play as, primarily, theatrical entertainment. The conflicting accounts of certain events from Richard's reign are looked at subsequently and the manner in which they reflect the different function of the texts. Finally, consideration is given to the different way in which the Myrroure and Richard II each reflect upon the theme of kingship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His message can be contradictory, for he does see his murder as 'causeles' (l. 116) and his opponents as 'traytrous' (l. 114). Yet the overwhelming force of his own argument is that his reign was characterised by 'vices' (ll. 2 & 34), and that he 'fell / to make the living wise' (l.23). The strict, consistent rhyme scheme drives home the didactic message of the poem, as does the repeated use of alliteration, such as 'shame sueth sinne' (l.18). Shakespeare's Richard is a more complex, contradictory character, reflecting the theatrical purpose of the play. Richard is 'shown' as well as 'told' which, particularly during the first two Acts, results in conflicting impressions of him. In Act 1 Scene 1, he appears as the regal, 'impartial' (1.1.115) king, 'not born to sue, but to command' (1.1.196). The following scene begins to undermine this, as 'God's substitute' (1.2.37) is implicated by Gaunt in the death of the Duke of Gloucester. Richard's appearance in the richly formal third scene reinforces his initial, regal portrayal but subsequently, his expressed desire for Gaunt's 'physician... / To help him to his grave immediately' (1.4.58–59) and Gaunt's own violent indictment of this 'unstaid youth' (2.1.2) finally and fatally undermine the 'showing' of Richard as a majestic, benevolent ... This is an example of the stories; The Monkey's Paw and Tell–Tale Heart. The story, The Monkey's Paw, tells you about an old friend of Mr. White coming to visit him and his family. He shows them the monkey's paw and tells them that it can grant you three wishes. They take it even though the friend warns them not to and the results aren't what they expected. The story, Tell–Tale Heart, tells you about the narrator who is plotting to kill an old man with the "vulture eye". The narrator doesn't realize that what he's done will cost him. The story says, "–I made up my mind to take the life of the old man and thus rid myself of the eye forever." The author is giving readers what the narrator will exactly do by the end of the story. While reading both stories, I saw that the authors wrote a lot of irony, the opposite of what will happen in a story. When Mr. White makes a wish from the monkey' paw, he wishes for 200 pounds. The consequences of the Whites' family getting 200 pounds was Herbert dying. This is an example example of situational irony, the situation turns out to be the opposite of what you thought it would be, because while the readers thought the money was going to drop out of the sky, the whole other outcome was different. In the beginning of Tell–Tale Heart, the narrator said, 'I loved the old man. He had never wronged me." This is an example of verbal irony, you say one thing but really mean the opposite, because he said he loved him, but meant the opposite because he killed the old man. The authors of both stories, last but not leastly, use suspenseful moods, the feeling that the story creates within the reader, and dangerous/mysterious tones, an author's attitude toward the subject or audience of the story, throughout the story. In The Monkey's Paw, the author says, "...The clock tick.s. A chair creaks. Finally, a quiet knock is heard. Mrs. White jumps up." This is an example of a suspenseful mood and mysterious tone. Non Substance Disorder Support Group Meeting Having thought about which non–substance disorder support group meeting I would like to attend, I originally choose Sex Addicts Anonymous (SA) because I knew someone decades ago who became a member, and knowing the person well, I have been curious about the meetings for some time now. However, the SA meetings are closed, in retrospect this makes sense for a variety of reasons, and since I could not tell them that I considered myself to qualify as a sex addict, I had to make another choice. My next choice was an Overeaters Anonymous meeting because there was one at the Atonement Church, of which I am familiar. Once again plans changed, and I was destined to arrive at the Wyomissing Church of the Brethren at 2200 State Hill Road. Consequently, this was a Wednesday evening meeting at 5:15 p.m. I live across from Centre Park in Town and I got stuck in an obscene amount of traffic trying to get on the Warren Street Bypass. At one point, I figured that I maybe could turn around and try the Thursday OE meeting at Atonement because I was getting so anxious worrying where exactly I had to go, and if I would walk in late, and this I definitely did not want to do. Deciding to press on, I pulled into the parking lot at 5:17, so I continued into what I presumed to be the front lobby. There were signs strewn about regarding community meetings and such, but nothing about OE specifically, and no signs of life. Thankfully, my meeting instincts kicked in, and I stood still, calmed ... The story "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W Jacobs starts with Mr.White's good friend, Sergeant Major Morris coming into their house one day and introduces the Monkey's Paw to them that he got from India that he did not want anymore and also tried to sell. The Monkey's Paw could grant 3 wishes but some say it brings good luck with grave consequences. This is what happened to the White family. The Monkey's Paw brought great calamity to the whole family. In the end, I think that the father Mr.White is the most responsible for the family's sorrow. Even though he knew there were heavy consequences if he made a wish. For example, the sergeant says on page 683, "The first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mrs.White was the one who convinced Mr.White to make another wish to bring their son back. On page 684 it says, "We had the first wish granted, why not the second". This means she really wants to make another wish. Additionally, according to the text, it points out on page 684 she says, "The paw! She cried wildly. The monkey's paw!" • 30. The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs Would you want three wishes to be granted to you? You probably said yes, but have you ever thought of anything that could go wrong with your three wishes? In W.W. Jacobs, "The Monkey's Paw", the story is about the White family who received a monkey's paw that allows three wishes to be made. They find out that this monkey's paw is one big troublemaker that causes havoc and unrest. Overall, "The Monkey's Paw", had very distinct and believable characters and a great plot that was fraught with danger and suspense. One element I like in "The Monkey's Paw" was it had very distinct characters. For instance, Mrs. White's unawareness of what's going to happen really contributes to the outcome of the story. If it weren't for Mrs. White's naïve and unwary personality, the book probably would have been different as this quote suggests. "'Wish!' she cried in a strong voice. 'It's foolish and wicked,' said Mr. White. 'Wish!' repeated his wife."(192) When she had forced Mr. White to make this wish she did not know that Herbert would come back as an undead corpse. Every mom wants her kid, but she did not realize that bringing her son would make things even worst. Along with Mrs. White's unwariness, Mr. White's interest in the paw without a doubt contributes to the developing story. I deem that Mr. White paid no attention to the warnings Sergeant Morris conveyed. "'Pitch it in the fire like a sensible man' said Morris. Mr. White shook his head and examined his new possession closely. 'How ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of William Jacobs The Monkey's Paw In "The Monkey's Paw", author William Jacobs conveys the message that fate rules peoples' lives, and that those who try to interfere with fate do so at their own peril. This premise is clearly shown as the plot of this clever story unfolds. Sergeant Morris reluctantly gave Mr. White the monkey's paw, but warned him of the consequences. The White family playfully wished for two hundred pounds and when nothing happened immediately, they dismissed the sergeant's story as a fairy tale. However, the events of the next day show the cruel irony of the wish. Unlike many widow's, her feelings of utter devastation do not last. Mrs. Mallard's sobs of loss turn to cries of joy after she reflects upon her own character and discovers truths about her marriage. As any woman would, Mrs. Mallard initially "wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment," (227) at the news of her husband's death. Before her husband's death, Mrs. Mallard believed she was in a healthy, normal marriage. This death revealed to her how while she cared about her husband, she despised the lack of freedom her marriage had given her. All of the realizations that Mrs. Mallard reaches during her time of reflection shows the readers exactly why she will no longer mourn the death of her husband. The reader might question as to why Mrs. Mallard's feelings towards her husband's death change so quickly. Was she previously unaware of the "subtle and elusive" (227) thoughts that made her believe that this death might be a blessing in disguise? Mrs. Mallard, before her husband's death, had a romanticized view of her marriage. While she believed she loved Brently and was happy, after his death she became aware of the freedom she would now experience without a controlling husband. The "powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence" (228) would no longer be present. Mrs. Mallard was aware of her yearnings of independence and joy, but would never voice them while locked into her marriage with Brantley. • 36. The Monkey's Paw And The Keys Of Destiny Analysis In both stories "The Monkey's Paw" and "The Keys of Destiny" they prove that money isn't the source of happiness. Even though they have the same theme the two authors get this theme across in two completely different ways. With the story "The Monkey's Paw" the author uses the death of Herbert (the son of one of main character) to reveal the theme, while in "The Keys of Destiny" the author uses the keys of destiny to get the same effect. The main reason that the themes are presented differently is because of the craft moves that are being used. For example, in "The Monkey's Paw" the author W.W. Jacobs used revealing actions and in "The Keys of Destiny" the author Neil Philip uses symbolism. The main factor in the different ways that the two authors got the theme across was the craft moves. In "The Monkey's Paw" W.W. Jacobs uses revealing actions to get the main theme across. In the story one of Mr. White's friends tried to throw out a mummified paw of a monkey because he claims it was cursed. Disregarding that it was cursed and can cause consequences if he uses it he asks for money which he would regret later in the story. W.W Jacobs shows this when he writes, "'I wish for two hundred pounds,' said the old man distinctly."(1.5) this quote is just the first action of where he wishes for the money the revealing part comes later when the Whites obtains the money. The revealing action is when the Whites hear about the death of their son that goes back to their wish for money, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Of those two, it is argued that, The Pianist is his best work. This is because this film has close ties to Polanski's roots. Born in Paris, France in 1933, his father was a Polish–Jew and his mother was Catholic. Polanski's family moved to Krakow, Poland in 1936. Unfortunately this move would negatively impact the Polanski family, forever. In 1936, the Nazi occupation of Poland began, starting with the invasion Krakow – it is known for being a Jewish city. Having little money and virtually no time to escape, the Polanski family was forced to stay in what would eventually become known as the Krakow Ghetto. Polanski was merely a young child when he was forced to watch his mother being taken away by the SS to a Nazi labor camp. As for his father, he was eventually taken as well. With Roman Polanski being forced to fend for himself, he had to abide by Nazi rule, hiding from them the fact that he was a Jew. Fortunately, for Polanski's genetics he looked more like a true German than he did a Jew, which made it easier for him to survive in Krakow. In 1943, Roman Polanski escaped the ghetto, and survived the remainder of the war using the name Romek Wilk with the help of some Polish Roman Catholic Families. When the war ended in 1945 Roman was reunited with his father. These events in Polanski's early childhood ultimately ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. The Monkey's Paw Suspense Essay Title In many stories there is a sense of tension and excitement. This is suspense which makes the reader curious of the outcome of the story or future events. Suspense can be found when the author uses repeating phrases, uses vivid words to describe dramatic actions, or explains a character's anxiety and fear. Suspense is created by authors with a technique called, characterizing anxiety and fear. When authors use this technique they describe what a character is doing to portray fear. This advances in the reader's curiosity. For instance, in the " The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs, The White family is given a magical monkey's paw that grants three wishes to Mr. White. His first wish results in their son's death. Mrs. White forced Mr. White to bring their son back to life with the magical monkey's paw; Mr. White knew this couldn't be good and wanted to wish his son away so " [he] was on his hands and knees groping ... When the police came to the house the narrator played it cool and the officers believed him. But, when he sat down he started to hear a heartbeat that got "louder! Louder! Louder!–"(Poe 94) A key reason for this quote was to show that the heartbeat was starting to get too loud to bear. This quote makes the reader curious of what the narrator will do when he can't bear the sound any longer. Certainly, that allows suspense to be created. • 54. The Monkey's Paw: Time Structure Essay examples "The Monkey's Paw" is a short story which moves around the edges of a ghost story and the uncanny. In general terms, the narration immerses the reader into a frightening atmosphere in which the reader can realise that there are certain elements that make the reading something more than a spooky tale; for example the way time is treated in the structure of the story. It is peculiar the way W.W. Jacobs manages to create a rather concrete story by making the reader fill so many gaps. In our opinion, that is due to the fact that there is a complete focus on the development of the story since the arrival of the monkey's paw, and that there are several omissions of facts in the beginning and in the end of the story, which is no coincidence. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the reader looks closely, the only part that is being told of this story is the middle, that is to say neither the beginning (the origins of the monkey paw) nor the end (Mr. White final wish and what followed). In the first case, the reader is free to choose how much time passed since the arrival to the monkey paw to the White's house, and even more what happened during that time. There are other factors that can influence the reader's mind in the beginning such as the influence of alcohol over the veracity of the story. In the other case, the reader has to come to an ending based on the only clue that is behind: the knocks on the door. There are some other cases in this story which involve time, such as the actual time that passed between the departure of Hebert to his job and the arrival of the man who announce his death, fact that can even determine the credibility of the story told by the narrator, which not only make the reader interact with the story itself, but also it makes them become a crucial interface between the words and the meanings behind them. This works as a demonstration of what Sartre defined as engagé literature: reading is a commitment between writer and reader. In the case of "The Monkey's Paw", the story wouldn't be as interesting if the reader wouldn't have had the chances agreed by the reader to fill the gaps. That engagement makes the factor of time appears as a whole unit, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. Death Of An Hour By Kate Chopin Death is a natural part of life, and, therefore, a common theme in many literary works. Kate Chopin, the author of "The Story of an Hour," explores the theme of death by unfolding the story of a woman whose husband dies in a tragic accident. While the wife initially weeps with grief, her emotions soon transform into feelings of secret delight over her new–found freedom. In his story "The Monkey 's Paw," W. W. Jacobs addresses the theme of death in a much darker manner. A holy man has placed a curse on a decaying monkey 's paw. The White family, who gains possession of this paw, has been granted three wishes, the first of which seemingly ends in the death of the son Herbert, devastating his mother and father. While the characters in "The Story of an Hour" and "The Monkey 's Paw" cope with the deaths of their loved ones in very different ways, both Chopin and Jacobs explore the theme of death through imagery and symbolism. In her work "The Story of an Hour," Chopin uses both imagery and symbolism to examine the effects of a spouse 's death on the loved one left behind. When Louise Mallard is faced with the untimely death of her husband Brently Mallard, she sobs uncontrollably "with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister 's arms" (par. 3). These emotion–filled sounds of weeping are evidence of the widow 's fierce grief. The imagery continues as Chopin compares Louise 's response to a violent storm, "a storm of grief, " (par. 3) to encourage the reader to visualize the heart ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A fine crash from the piano greeted the words, interrupted by a shuddering cry from the old man. His wife and son ran toward him. 'It moved,' he cried, with a glance of disgust at the object as it lay on the floor. 'As I wished, it twisted in my hands like a snake.' These meetings took place between 1935 and 1939 when Alcoholics Anonymous was an integral part of "A First Century Christian Fellowship" (Pitman 56). A.A. was the outcome of a meeting between Bill W., a New York stockbroker, and Dr. Bob S., an Akron surgeon. Both had been hopeless alcoholics (Fingarette 14). Before this time, Bill and Dr. Bob had each been in contact with the Oxford Group, a mostly nonalcoholic fellowship that emphasized universal spiritual values in daily living(Fingarette 15). An article was carried by Liberty magazine in the fall of 1939, resulting in some 800 urgent calls for help. At the year's end, the membership stood at 2,000 (Pitman 83). Then, in March of 1941, the Saturday Evening Post featured an excellent article about A.A. and the response was enormous (Pitman 84). By the close of that year, the membership had jumped to 6,000, and the number of groups multiplied in proportion. The Fellowship was spreading across the U.S. and Canada. By 1950, one hundred thousand recovered alcoholics could be found worldwide (Pitman 85). As spectacular as this was, the period of 1940–1950 was nonetheless one of great uncertainty (Wekesser 42). Could the mercurial alcoholics live and work together in groups? This was the unsolved problem. By 1946, however, it had already become possible to draw sound conclusions about the kind of attitude, practice and function that would best suit A.A.'s purpose (Fingarette 40). • 68. Oskar Schindler 's Death Of The Jewish Ghetto Many words can be used to describe Oskar Schindler; partier, alcoholic, womanizer, etc, but the most unlikely word that can be used is savior, which he proved to be in the 1940s. Schindler was definitely a sinner, but he did the unthinkable at the time, "He [Schindler] was no saint. And yet, the same man would prove to have depths of courage and humanity rare at any time–even rarer during the time in which he lived." (Roberts, pg. 6). During the grueling years of the Holocaust and World War II, Oskar Schindler proved that love and kindness still existed by rescuing over 1,000 Jewish residents of Krakow, Poland. By doing this alone, the Nazis would have killed him because at that time, it was even illegal to be touching a Jew, let alone saving them. One major factor that led to the saving of the Jews was the liquidation of the Krakow Jewish Ghetto, "Schindler witnessed a few hours of beastiality with which the liquidation [of Krakow] was executed. The horror of what he saw undoubtedly played a role in his indignation and his unfailing and compassion with the persecuted [Jews]." (Thompson. pg. 138). After the invasion of Poland, the Nazis set up several ghettos around the country, one of which was in Krakow, where they held Jews. Eventually these ghettos didn't seem worthy of Adolph Hitler's "Final Solution" so these ghettos were liquidated and thousands of it's residents were massacred and sent to concentration camps, Schindler experienced one of these liquidations. • 76. Explain The Theme Of Foreshadowing In 'Monkey's Paw' In the short story Monkey's Paw, W.W. Jacobs creates a tale of a man who's curiousness leads to a tragic ending. He uses this tale to illustrate a theme of how to much curiosity can be dangerous. Jacobs utilizes many different literary techniques to explain his theme. At the beginning of the story W.W. Jacob uses foreshadowing that hints at the decision Mr.White will make at the climax of the story. The title "Monkey's Paw" symbolizes curiosity, due to the fact that monkeys are curious animals . Also, Mr.White's yearning to go to India symbolizes his curiosity about the rest of the world and how he wants to travel to and experience exotic areas. In addition to symbolism, the setting of this story also plays a necessary role in helping Jacobs portray his message. Many people may believe Jacobs theme is the downfall of greedy people or the importance of being content. But many contradictions appear with a deeper look into the story. Jacobs utilizes foreshadowing, title, setting, character, and various others symbols to emphasize his theme of the dangers of curiosity. The first indication of the theme emerges at the beginning of the story when Mr.White and his son, Herbert, are playing chess. While they were playing chess, Jacobs describes Mr. White's technique by explaining he "possessed ideas about the game involving radical chances" (Jacobs 17). This scene foreshadows Mr.White's willingness to make high risk decisions to satisfy his curiousness. Mr.White is curious if his high risk ideas would eventually lead him to win the match of chess. However, when examined with a trained eye, one will find that they do share one major similarity. That being their extensive use of torture. Now, in this day and age torture is quite the hot button topic, this is especially true with the recent possibility of the US going back into torture. Although some may think America can use torture, it is ultimately foolish for the U.S. to utilize this brutal tactic, as it proves to be a "Monkey's Paw" for the entire nation.
