What Are The Twelve Gods In Greek Mythology
Greek religion had a comprehensive mythology. It generally encompassed of stories and of the Gods
how they effected the humans on earth. In Greek mythology, the Twelve Olympians, also known as
the Dodekatheo were the primary deities of the Greek pantheon, residing upon a mythical Mount
Olympus. The Olympians achieved their hegemony in a war of gods in which Zeus led his siblings
to success over the Titans. The notion of the "Twelve Gods" is older than any existent Greek or
Roman sources, and is expected to be of Anatolian origin. The gods congregated in the council in
the Homeric epics, but the initial ancient reference to religious ceremonies for the Olympians can be
found in the Homeric Hymn to Hermes. The Greek cult of the Twelve Olympians ... Show more

Hades, recognized in the Eleusinian tradition as Pluto, was not typically included amid the
Olympians as his realm was the underworld. Plato associated the Twelve Olympians with the twelve
months, and suggests that he considered Pluto one of the twelve in propositioning that the final
month be dedicated to him and the spirits of the dead. In Phaedrus Plato communicates the twelve
gods with the Zodiac and wished to eliminate Hestia from their rank. In the ancient religion, the
"Olympian Gods" and the "Cults of Twelve Gods" were often fairly distinct notions. The
Dodekatheon of Herodotus involved Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hermes, Athena, Apollo, Alpheus,
Cronus, Rhea and the Charities. Herodotus correspondingly discusses that Heracles was involved as
one of the Twelve to some degree. At Kos, Heracles and Dionysus are additional to the Twelve, and
Ares and Hephaestus are not. For Pindar, the Bibliotheca, and Herodorus, Heracles is not one of the
Twelve Gods, but the one who established their cult. Lucian (2nd century AD) embraces Heracles
and Asclepius as associates of the Twelve, without explanation which two had to give way for

Hestia Death Goddess
Hestia was the goddess of the family hearth and the sacrificial flame. She remained a virgin after
taking an oath to Zeus. Hestia's parents were Cronus and Rhea, she was the first born of their
children. She was not commonly known for a great adventure or story, however, she was known
widely through worship. Her Roman equivalent was Vesta, who was worshiped by the cult of Vestal
Virgins. She did not have a huge impact on Greek mythology, but is still an important goddess.
Hestia was the goddess of the family hearth. Every city in Greece had a public hearth dedicated to
her. The fire at these hearths were never allowed to go out. In Greek homes, they would have a
hearth to symbolize Hestia. She personified the fire burning in the hearth of every Greek home. The
Greeks would begin and end every meal with an offering to her. Her flame was to never be put out;
if they had to put out her flame, they would extinguish the flame by a ritual. She was worshiped
publically and privately all throughout Greece. (greekgodsandgoddesses.net) ... Show more content

Many towns in Greece had a common house, known as the prytaneum. The hearth was known to be
the center point to all Greek homes. A common house was in the center of town, with Hestia's flame
burning in a hearth. The flame and hearth represented the heart of the town. Travelers and
immigrants would come to the common house of the town to be greeted there. She received partial
sacrifices and offerings to the gods. Before any sacrifice to the gods, there would be a sacrifice held
for Hestia first. (Royal Mint Publishing, Greek Mythology – Hestia, Gods–and–monsters.com) If
Greeks wanted to find a new colony or town, they would have to take a torch lit by her flame. They
would put this torch in the middle of the new colony, and begin building a new hearth and common
house. Hestia was most likely worshiped more than any other Greek god/goddess in

Ancient Greek Mythology
The Role of Mythology in the Lives of Ancient Greeks
The Ancient Greeks didn't understand many things in their lives. They wondered how the seasons
changed and what were planets and stars. All of these things were mysteries to them, and the Greeks
answered these questions through the myths of Gods and Goddesses. Ancient Greeks believed that
these Gods and Goddesses controlled the elements of nature and helped their lives for the better
through everyday activities. Their powers were used to explain all that they cannot, from everyday
work to the forces of nature. Hestia was the goddess of the hearth, home, architecture, domesticity,

She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Persephone, being such a beautiful and kind young
woman was wanted by many gods, Hades included. One day, when she was playing in the meadow,
the Earth opened up and Hades appeared to take Persephone. Accomplishing his task, Demeter
searched the Earth for her daughter until Hermes told her everything. It seemed that Zeus and
Hermes watched the abduction. After eating some pomegranate seeds, Persephone was to stay in the
Underworld one–third of the year and return to her mother for four months. What everyone didn't
know is that Zeus may have helped plan it. Zeus one of the big three, is the god of weather and
siblings of Hades and Poseidon. Overthrowing his father, Cronus, Zeus became ruler of Olympus as
well as lord of the sky. His weapon was a thunderbolt that he would hurl at whoever defied him.
Using his shield, Zeus could create anything of nature that related to the sky. He was married to
Hera, but was known for his infamous affairs with other goddesses. One of his many affairs brought
one of the most complex and important gods: Apollo. Apollo was the god of many things including:
music, art, poetry, oracles, archery, plague, medicine, sun, light and knowledge. He was born out of
an affair with the Titan Goddess, Leto. Apollo was also known as kuoros, which means he is
beardless, athletic, and youthful. However, he is also known for many deaths with his plagues in
wars. Ironically, he also represents purity, he is able to cleanse all the blood stained on bodies. All in
all, Apollo was very powerful, and represented many things in

Name and relationships: Dionysos is the son of Zeus and the mortal Semele.
2. Powers, specialties, and values: He is god of fertility, wine, pleasure, theater, the afterlife, and the

3. Attributes: Dionysos' attributes are the vine, ivy, thyrsos, kantharos, the panther, and the cheetah.
This mosaic depicts Dionysos riding a cheetah, holding on with only one hand. Riding the cheetah is
likely a symbol of frenzy and pleasure, and possibly how love of pleasure can lead to irrational
thoughts. His relationship with the symbol of the cheetah may also represent the speed of his
thoughts, as quick thinking isn't necessarily always rational and often are made in a frenzy. His gaze
seems direct, like he may only be considering one aspect of a decision, focusing on potential
pleasures while not seeing potential harms. He appears to be holding a thrysos, likely representative
of his powers of fertility. On his head he wears a crown that seems to be made of a vine with leaves,

All throughout history there are many documentations of different cultures and their many gods and
goddesses. Many of these cultures did not have just one god or goddess, they had several. In ancient
Greece there are said to be twelve Olympian Gods and Goddesses that preside in Mount Olympus.
Although there are many different variations and myths, there are the main twelve Olympians: Zeus,
Hera, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Athena, Artemis, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Ares, and Hermes.

was not welcomed by men and gods. Because men feared him, he was given the name Plouton. He
was given this name so people would not have to say his name out loud for fear that they would die.
(1) Eventually he was referred to as the god of wealth because he possessed the precious metals of
the earth. (1) He was married to Persephone, Demeter's daughter. It is said that Hades kidnapped her

and crafting. Dionysus was the god of wine, Hephaestus was the god of fire and blacksmithing and
Hermes was the messenger god. Many things were named after the Greek gods. For an example take
Athens, the capital of Greece. Athens was named after Athena the goddess of wisdom. When the
people of Athens wanted a god to protect their city they both Poseidon and Athena wanted the job.
So they each gave one gift to convince the Athenians they were the better one. Poseidon gave them
a saltwater spring and Athena gave them an olive tree. The water from the salt water spring was
undrinkable so the Athenians chose Athena as their protector.
The Greek Gods were honored with temples gifts and statues. The most famous is probably the

The Symbolism Of Hermes In Homer's Odyssey
Hermes is infamously known for being the messenger of the gods, which is true, however he is also
in charge of many other sectors of the world as well. He is the god of travel, merchants, literature,
and thieves. Hermes is sometimes thought to be as a trickster because of how he would take any
opportunity to trick the gods for the well–being of human kind, or for his own personal gratification,
which is why Hermes is sometimes considered to be a trickster. As soon as Hermes was born he
stole Apollo's cattle and said that he didn't do it, and that is why he became the god of thieves.
Hermes had many symbols but for the most part he is mainly associated with Caduceus and his
winged sandals. His winged sandals are representative of his immense speed, and the Caduceus is
two snakes that wrap around a winged staff. In literature, Hermes, or a character with his traits is

but Orion, her hunting partner was the only one that she demonstrated any sense of fondness of.

Greek Mythology And The Mythology
The characters, stories, themes and lessons of Greek mythology have shaped art and literature for
thousands of years. Later Greek writers and artists used and elaborated upon these sources in their
own work. Did you know that in ancient Greece, stories about gods and goddesses and heroes and
monsters were an important part of everyday life. They explained everything from rituals to the
weather, and they gave meaning to the world people saw around them. Many consumer products get
their names from Greek mythology. For example sports teams (Titans, Spartans and Trojans, for
instance) also get their names from mythological sources and the website Amazon.com is named
after the race of mythical female warriors.
Greek mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning
their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and
ritual practices. It was a part of the religion in ancient Greece. Greek myth attempts to explain the
origins of the world, and details the lives and adventures of a wild Varity of gods, goddesses, heroes,
heroines and mythological creatures. These accounts were initially disseminated in an oral–poetic
tradition, though today the Greek myths are known primarily from Greek literature. Did you know

Zeus Personality
Zeus was considered to be the leader of the Olympian gods of Mount Olympus. He was the god of
the sky and thunder. He had many powers but the most significant was the power to wield lightning
bolts. He could hurl lightning bolts at people who defied him or other gods who he was displeased
with. He was the youngest child of Cronus and Rhea and was planned to get eaten by Cronus like all
of his brothers and sisters before him, but he was hidden from Cronus at Mount Dicte. He then went
on to overthrow Cronus and control the gods. He had twenty–four children and some of them were
powerful gods. He also had some half god children like Hercules. He lives on the top of Mount
Olympus with Hera, his wife.
Zeus' most significant and well known power was the ability to hold lightning bolts. He could throw
them like a javelin at people or gods that did not please him or defied him. He had his winged horse

security, happiness and the sacred duty of hospitality. She presided over domestic life. Her symbols

When groups, towns, or communities were made, people made public hearths, called prytaneums.
That is the place a fire was constantly maintained for the good of all. If the fire ever goes out,
someone couldn't just light it with any normal fire. It had to be done precisely and only with friction
or by burning glass, drawing fire from the sun. This was believed to invoke Hestia to guard your
hearth. Hestia was depicted (recognized) in an Athenian vase painting as a modestly veiled woman,
sometimes holding a flowered branch. In classical sculpture she was also veiled with a kettle as her
attribute. She was once considered "Chief of all goddesses" but is now consider to be "the lost
goddess." Her name means "the essence; true nature of things". People would pray to her for
protection and hospitality, and for warmth. They would also pray to her to help us accept the truth of
our lives with inner grace. The people would pray to her from the Forum, the house of Vestal
Virgins, and even present day at the firesides of their homes.

What Role Does Vesta Play In Greek Mythology
Roman mythology is full of rich, cultural stories. Many of them are about the struggle of humanity.
Others are about overcoming impossible odds, and maybe slaying a beast. However, some of the
most engaging stories are about the Roman gods. Vesta is one of the lesser gods, but she is also one
of the most important. There is a lot of interesting information about what Vesta was like as a
goddess. "Vesta was the goddess of the hearth, the home, and domestic life in the Roman religion"
(ancient.eu). In Greek mythology, she "identified with the Greek goddess Hestia" (ancient.eu).
Many of the Roman gods are portrayed by statues, however, "unlike most of the other gods and
goddesses, Vesta was never represented by a statue of any sort, for she was thought of as being the
hearth–fire herself" (Usher, 19). Vesta was also viewed by the Romans in a peculiar way. In Roman
mythology, her father eats Vesta and her siblings, and "being the first one eaten, she was the last to
be released, so the romans considered her both the oldest and the youngest of the gods"
(mythology.net). She was often depicted followed by her spirit animal, a donkey (mythology.net).
Also, since she is the goddess of the hearth, her symbol is the hearth. While there are not many
stories in mythology about Vesta, there is one story that shows a gripping part of ... Show more

The Sacred Home Of Demeter
Chapter One
The sacred home of Demeter, Level 07 of the enormous Space Station Olympus, was dedicated
almost solely to farming. Vast fields of wheat and vegetables stretched as far as the eye could see,
large orchards of fruit trees filled the Southern section, and tall silos towered over each field. As vast
as it was, this level was not the only place growing food for the ever–expanding population of the
space station. There were two more levels between the inhabited cities and Hades that produced
grain, fruits, and vegetables, and personal farms could be found on nearly all other levels.
Even with all that, food was starting to become scarce. The humans prayed daily to Demeter for a
bountiful harvest to feed the masses. Legends told of how Demeter blessed the mortals and the
fields yielded untold edible treasures, but for the past eighteen years, Demeter barely paid the
mortals any mind. All of her focus was now on her daughter, Kore, and protecting her from the dark
forces Demeter knew were plotting against them.
"It 's us against them," Demeter would tell Kore each day as she braided her daughter 's dark, curly
hair. "I 'm the only person you can trust."
Kore grew under her mother 's watchful eyes. Like Demeter, she heard the prayers of the humans

could do without being officially named a goddess, and Demeter seemed to no longer care. The only

Hestia Hearth Goddess
Hestia: Goddess of the Hearth
Many gods and goddesses don't have many myths or exciting tales surrounding them. Hestia, born
from Chronus and Rhea, is one of them. This is because she has a solitary job: protecting and
flourishing the hearth of every home and family (Freeman 80). She may have a few myths, such as
how she got her honor as a virgin goddess and such, but the hearth of Hestia must be guarded at all
times so they can't be excessive (Freeman 80). But because of this she was greatly worshipped and
respected to the point where she was given a share of all other offerings ("Hestia"). Hestia wasn't
only god of the hearth, however. She was also in charge of family meals and communal feasts,
another important part of everyday lives for humans ("Hestia"). Despite the fact of having little

She is a virgin goddess, and the myth surrounding is that despite being asked by Poseidon and

offerings ("Hestia"). So from there on, she was considered a chief among goddesses ("Hestia").
Another myth of hers takes place after a banquet while many of the gods were frolicking and

by this, and the gods rush to help her from Priapus ("Hestia"). Myths are scarce when it comes to

one day when he was wandering through the forest. As he was walking, he approached a hungry and

As Pan was quietly trying to not disturb the hungry bear, he accidentally stepped on a stick which

began playing a soothing song. The bear calmed down and went on with his search for something to

After Hestia watched the whole scene, she couldn't get Pan out of her head. She had instantly fallen

was to calm that mean bear down. She also told him that he played lovely music. They then

sea foam. Aphrodite held the myrtle tree sacred along with the dove and sometimes swan.
Most commonly written of in poems and myths, Aphrodite has many stories to go along
with her reputation. The Greeks placed the goddess of love in a very important position in

In Greek mythology, the Twelve Olympians, also known as the Dodekatheo were the primary deities of the Greek pantheon, residing upon a mythical Mount Olympus. The Olympians achieved their hegemony in a war of gods in which Zeus led his siblings to success over the Titans. The notion of the "Twelve Gods" is older than any existent Greek or Roman sources, and is expected to be of Anatolian origin. Hades, recognized in the Eleusinian tradition as Pluto, was not typically included amid the Olympians as his realm was the underworld. Plato associated the Twelve Olympians with the twelve months, and suggests that he considered Pluto one of the twelve in propositioning that the final month be dedicated to him and the spirits of the dead. In Phaedrus Plato communicates the twelve gods with the Zodiac and wished to eliminate Hestia from their rank. In the ancient religion, the "Olympian Gods" and the "Cults of Twelve Gods" were often fairly distinct notions. The Dodekatheon of Herodotus involved Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hermes, Athena, Apollo, Alpheus, Cronus, Rhea and the Charities. Herodotus correspondingly discusses that Heracles was involved as one of the Twelve to some degree. At Kos, Heracles and Dionysus are additional to the Twelve, and Ares and Hephaestus are not. For Pindar, the Bibliotheca, and Herodorus, Heracles is not one of the Twelve Gods, but the one who established their cult. Lucian (2nd century AD) embraces Heracles and Asclepius as associates of the Twelve, without explanation which two had to give way for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
