Halberstam Case Analysis
Halberstam along with his brother were both pushed to do well in school and as a result both were
able to attend Harvard. Halberstam by his own admission struggled for a period academically at
Harvard and almost failed out of school. However it was during this period in the early 1950's that
he found is passion for journalism. He worked for the school's daily newspaper The Harvard
Crimson and was eventually named managing editor ( ). Halberstam's time working for the Crimson
set forth many beliefs and practices he followed his entire career. In an interview for the Academy of
Achievement Halberstam indicated how independent the paper was form the University and they
took no funding from them to remain that way. Halberstam indicated

Sabrina conducted a peer mediation group and mutual aid groups, provided services to students in
need of crisis intervention, drug and alcohol counseling, grief support and weekly individual
sessions. Sabrina presented with a strong work ethic which enabled her to excel in her placement.
What impressed me about Sabrina, she was only responsible to do an 8 hour week, but instead did
16 hours, because of her dedication to the students.
Her obligation to the enhancement of humanity and continually seeking out occasions to develop her
knowledge, impressed me. She served in a leadership capacity of the Social Work Student Alliance
and had taken her position to heart. They were involved in activities to promote social justice in the
local community, as well as globally. She also participated as a social work peer mentor to a social
work junior student.
In closing, I believe Sabrina has a range and depth of practice experiences to build on as she
continues her studies in graduate school. Sabrina is an insightful and inspiring person that met
challenges with unwavering dedication. I am confident that Sabrina will do well in graduate school

Sandy Skoglund Essay
Sandy Skoglund Sandy Skoglund has been in the forefront of contemporary art in the United States,
as well as overseas, for nearly two decades. Her dramatic impact to the art world didn't begin
overnight. After sheer dedication to art education she received her BA degree in Studio Art in 1968
from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. Upon getting her BA, she pursued further
education at the University of Iowa where she received her MD. With her remarkable educational
background, Skoglund decided to expand her horizons by teaching. Her teaching career grew at a
rapid pace and she found herself teaching at the University of Hartford from 1973 to 1976. In late
1976, she was offered a position at Rutgers University, New Jersey, ... Show more content on

Some of her works include "Radioactive Cats", "Fox Games", "Walking on Eggshells", and
"Shimmering Madness". After seeing Ms. Skoglund's work in the book Artforms , I was totally
clueless as to what she was expressing. The particular illustration I'm referring to is "Revenge of the
Goldfish". If the name alone sets you back, don't worry you're not the only one. She has an eerie
way of taking ordinary things, fish in this case, and forming a scene in which no one could possibly
think of.
Now that I have done my research on Ms. Skoglund, I have found an irresistible urge to see her
work. One thing I like the most about her artwork is that you never know what you are going to get
next. Her creativity is absolutely endless. Life magazine listed her as one the world's top 100
photographers and she has received numerous achievement awards for her continued superiority in
the creative world of art. She joking stated, "I feel I've succeeded when a museum guard comes in
and stares at my exhibitions". I feel as though she has succeeded beyond belief and with being 54
years of age, her will and drive to create new ideas is stronger than ever. A columnist from The
Cincinnati Enquirer , Owen Findsen, states it best, "Ms. Skoglud is the rarest artist who has found a
voice so unique that it needs a category all it's own." The only thing that I would like to add to that
would be that Sandy Skoglund has become a creative

On April 8, 2013, President Barack Obama spoke at the University of Hartford on behalf of those
who died in the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut.
President Obama addressed the people of the state of Connecticut and on a federal level. The
broadcasting networks provided live coverage of President Obama's speech, and a national audience
listened as the president's addressing the issues and the next steps forward for the country. The
impact of this tragedy and previous massive shootings and Obama's explanation have been a subject
of a controversial debate. I plan on using the pentadic method to analyze President Obama's speech

It is interesting to see and reveal the misconceptions of President Obama's motive to the speech for
more gun control and how politicians and individuals are stressing an emotional and safety concern.
Within this political environment, and with a charismatic and persuasive use of the pentads, the
rhetor's motive was to implement legislation regarding gun control. Barack Obama as the rhetor,
directed towards American people to pressure congress to pass new gun legislation in Connecticut,
where the massacre took place. After the December 16, 2012 shooting at Newtown Connecticut,
there has been a controversial debate among gun control. The National Rifle Association had
fiercely lobbied congress to oppose any gun regulations. In this artifact, Obama spoke on behalf of
the murders of twenty children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. During his
speech, President Obama was hoping to build support among lawmakers for several gun control
measures, such as universal background checks. The president has the parents' support to lobby for
gun legislation. In addition, Obama's proposal to ban assault rifles and limiting high–ammunition
guns; majority of Republicans oppose this proposal. The research method I have demonstrated in

Essay on The Roots of Bilingual Education
The Roots of Bilingual Education
A historical perspective on bilingual education is written in the article "Bilingual Education Traces
its U.S. Roots to the Colonial Era" in the magazine Education Week. The author begins by writing,
"Bilingual education has been part of the immigrant experience in America since the Colonial
periods, when native–language schooling was the rule rather than the exception" (21). When
immigrant groups settled in the United States they taught their children in their own languages,
despite some attempts to impose English instruction. Many do not believe it but bilingual education
was started before 1800 when German, French, Scandanavian, Polish, Dutch and Italian schools
were established. From 1839 to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1930's English as a second language method was created to teach foreign diplomats and
university students but then it was extended to minority children. Students were removed from
regular "sink or swim" classrooms typically for 45 minutes a day, two to five times a week for
compensatory instruction. It was not until 1963 when the bilingual schooling was reborn with the
creation of the bilingual programs in Dade County, Florida by the Cubans who fled to Miami after
the Cuban revolution in 1959.
Bilingual education is a comprehensive educational approach that involves more than just learning
English skills. Children are taught all the areas first in their native language. Oral expressions and
reading are developed in native language courses and English is taught formally in English as a
Second Language classes. Once the children have learned to speak English, they are taught to read
it. Instruction through English in cognitive areas begins when the child can function in that language
and experiences no academic handicap due to insufficient knowledge of the language.

War of 1812

29 March 2015 The United States in 1812 claimed to be a neutral nation that would trade between
France and Great Britain. Although this seemed to be a good idea at first, tensions grew rapidly
because the French and British had bad relations, and the British weren't happy that we were trading
with the French. The British in 1812 began seizing ships from the United States in which they stole
goods the United States was trading with their opposing enemy, the French, as well as seizing
American sailors. The sailors that were captured by the British were forced into doing labor for their
navy and if they refused to follow their strict stipulations they would be thrown overboard. Due to

On December of 1814 the Federalists spoke out about their grievances towards the war of 1812 in
what is known as the Hartford convention. There was even talk about the New England states
feeling as though they were better off on their own and that they could secede from the Union
secretively at the Hartford convention which made it an extremely significant meeting per–say. New
England delegates quieted that theory during the convention, and in change proposed amendments
for congress to make it harder to declare war in the future, and they wanted to diminish the power of
the federal government over the states to a smaller level as well. The federalists stated that they were
providing finances towards a war with money that they basically didn't have to waste. They already
had limited trade with the French and the British because of Jefferson's Embargo Act of 1807 which
reduced trade with those nations to begin with. The federalist wanted to keep peaceful relations with
England for trading purposes because it brought the merchants a source of income and goods, and
the war of 1812 basically tarnished that. (Hartford

Trinity College Personal Statement
So many little kids have dream jobs. The doctors, the astronauts, even the cowboys of the world
grow up and apply to college. I can't say I've ever fantasized a dream job, I've been a pretty realistic
person my entire life, but that's not to say I don't have a dream. My dream is to help people. And my
aspiration is to complete undergraduate school as a biomedical engineer. Trinity College can help
me attain that goal. As one of the top universities for engineering in the country, it's no wonder why
any student wouldn't apply with a hopeful heart and vision of their congratulatory letter in the mail.
However, what makes Trinity distinctive is the freedom that you give your prospective graduates to
delve into their ideas and interests. As a Bantam, I could intern at the Hartford Hospital or even offer

A major part of the college social scene is revolved around alcohol use, drinking, partying and going

after a long week of classes. Stress from the syllabi and the eagerness to socialize are factors in the
motivation getting college students out and about. My curiosity as a college student myself, has led
me to study other college students' behavior when they go to bars and "distress" from arduous
schoolwork. In my research, I observe and compare how students behave in a bar setting in two
different locations: West Hartford, Connecticut and Charleston, South Carolina.

ENGR: 2110: Engineering Fundamentals 1: Statics Introduction
Engineers ought to maintain commendable design and implementation standards in the development
of any project. In fact, doing the contrary jeopardizes the welfare of the people utilizing the
materials created. As such, the knowledge on static concepts needs to be prioritized in the
development and implementation of engineering projects to minimize the possibilities of failure due
to poor planning. In 1978, the Hartford Civic Center coliseum collapse raised concerns on the need
for proper error identification in the engineering process. This tragedy occurred when the roof
collapsed after a heavy snowfall in the region. During the event, no casualties were experienced
since no one was at the stadium in the time of the catastrophe (Martin & Delatte, 2001).
Nonetheless, the lack of casualties does not alleviate the errors made by the engineers in the design
process. Additionally, the failure of this structure sparks numerous controversies on the ethical
responsibilities of engineers in the design and maintenance of structures. For a fact, the collapse of
the Hartford Civic Center has many ethical implications and it was a design and management
blunder by the engineers tasked with this responsibility.
Description of failure
The collapse of this structure was mainly attributed to improper calculations and anticipation of the
possible errors in the design employed. According

self–paced online activities involving group activities using Blackboard; chats, blogs, emails,
journaling, and web posting are also incorporated. Throughout the semester, weekly practicum
experiences are recorded in a log which is reviewed at mid semester and at course completion. Each
journal entry is expected to be a short summary of the week's experience and include one–two
references related to the educational concept of that particular week; the journal entries account for
35% of the class grade. In addition, when classes do not physically meet, online discussions of

Puerto Rican Experience in Hartford Essay
Puerto Rican Experience in Hartford
Hartford is the home to the highest percentage (27%) of Puerto Ricans in the country (Cruz, 5).
Nonetheless, Puerto Ricans still face myriad challenges with respect to the integration and
acceptance of their culture in Hartford. Although the PR community is only two generations old,
Puerto Ricans have managed to both organize and mobilize in this relatively short time (Cruz, 2).
Puerto Ricans have focused closely on their ethnic identity because they viewed their incorporation
into the political sphere occurring only by means of asserting their difference (Cruz, 10). They have

I relate each component with a historical event in Puerto Rican politics and also consider how
through this historic mobilization Puerto Ricans have gained entitlement to more power, equality,
representation, consciousness from other ethnic groups, and to some degree, social change. I focus
on the Puerto Ricans' migration to Connecticut, their development of ethnic awareness and power
awareness, their realization of common interests, their competing ethnic projects, and the brokered
representation they have endured as detailed in Jose Cruz's book, Identity and Power: Puerto Rican
Politics and the Challenge of Ethnicity. Finally, I examine an important point that Cruz only touched
upon briefly, which is the idea of cultural citizenship in the Puerto Rican community. This added
point helps us to fully understand the role identity politics played in Puerto Ricans' lives.
Puerto Ricans first entered the realm of identity politics with their migration to Hartford, beginning
in the 1950s. Their motivation was primarily economic; that is, Hartford had an abundance of job
opportunities in restaurants, stores, factories, and farms in comparison to New York City and Puerto
Rico (Cruz, 37). Puerto Ricans were now working and living alongside many other citizens of
different ethnicities and were treated much like other

Personal Narrative: My Mentorship Programs
The mentorship program for the spring of 2018 was first sent out in the middle of January 2018.
There I send out an email to my mentor the first week. I was then given a reply back from another
mentor that I might have gotten the wrong mentor email. I quickly search up my correct mentor and
send out the email the second week which is the end of January. My mentor did not reply back to me
until the 12th of February. She mentioned that her schedule is variable at United Hospital and she is
working that week at the hospital. During that week I have a few exams and thus I emailed her back
saying that the following week will be a much better time. I emailed her on that following week. She

I Want To Pursue My Bachelor's Degree In College
What I hope to do with my education is to earn my bachelor's degree in Journalism with a minor in
Spanish at Central Connecticut State University. I hope in college that I will be able to develop my

to become one of the first Hispanic/Latina sideline reporter for the YES Network Inc. Furthermore, I
hope to one day host my own talk show to speak about important issues that pertain to the Latino
community, such as education. I know what the value of an education is and how it should not be
taken for granted. There are many countries from Latino origin where young children do not have

Through this experience, I was given the platform to make great changes within the community and
especially in the Latin community. Last summer I wrote, starred and produced my own segment on
the lack of young Latino voters in Hartford, CT. I spoke to many people as well as then mayoral
candidates, Pedro Segarra (former mayor of Hartford), Joel Cruz Jr. and Luke Bronin (current mayor
of Hartford). Through this project I was able to get a better feel of the mistrust between the public
and the politicians. I was also able to provide a voice to those who needed it and didn't have the
platform to do it. Because of this project, it stirred a conversation within the community to the point
that there was a meeting held at the Hartford Library between young Latino voters and leaders of the
community. It was such a satisfying accomplishment that my work sparked fire into people's heart to
where they wanted to educate themselves to have a clearer understanding of what is at stake if they

Summary Of Businesses And Busy Beings
Businesses and Busy Beings: Exploring Hartford's Purpose
Janette Sadik–Khan, author of Streetfight and previous New York City Department of
Transportation commissioner, conceptually frames the discussion of downtown Hartford's purpose.
Sadik–Khan's ideology is based on the idea that one can redesign and transform city space while
reducing traffic and improving ease of access–in the streets–to all citizens. A walk through Hartford
in Sadik–Khan's perspective would include, agreeing with negative, "urban renewal" programs that
destroyed old buildings–and the neighborhoods with them–in the name of progress and for buildings
in their place cold, sterile high–rises set back on superblocks, sucking life away from the street" (9).
This quote, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sadik Khan mentions, "For lunch we'd grab deli sandwiches and bring them back to the office.
There was nowhere and no reason to sit outside" (17). The city would benefit from the seating
outdoors to enjoy the views from the manicured lawns of Hartford's Old State House, try foods from
the different food truck vendors and marvel at the unique architecture of the "Boat Building" at
Constitution Plaza. The population who be able to take advantage of the opportunities that Hartford
has to offer, and would not be stuck behind closed doors. Rather, people in Hartford, would be able
to use the welcoming outdoor lounging areas, as Sadik–Khan references, "a place where people
wanted to be" in her words, "Workers in nearby buildings brought lunches to the tables sheltered
beneath the plaza's umbrellas with coffees and snacks purchased at local cafés and food trucks. The
transformation was fast–a couple of weeks–and easily integrated into the neighborhood" (Sadik–
Khan, 82). In other words, the outdoor space will be greatly utilized by both the working population
and also the students at the nearby schools and universities. A transformation to the space will
quickly encourage others to enjoy the new open–air additions and will accommodate the city
community. The older facade of the unused, blank streets will not be missed.
As seen through the congested streets of Hartford, the dominating factor in

Essay about Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman
Denial by definition is in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and
rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence. In Arthur
Miller's play The Death of a Salesman the Loman family lives and breathes in denial. This starts
with Willy's and Linda's awkward and awful marriage and ends with their two troubled sons. The
Loman Family's dysfunctional traits come from years of self–deception, which they use as a means
to mentally escape the cruel reality of their everyday lives. Their eldest son Biff is the only member
of the family to see these false hopes and makes the decision to change his life. These lies and false
illusions are mostly created by the head of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Linda–Why's that dear. Willy–I don't know why, I'm not noticed." This quote shows Willy
contradicting himself. Saying he is very well liked in Hartford but then says he is ignored and
unnoticed most of the time. This shows that he frequently uses self–deception to deceive himself
about his success. The truth about his life however is close by and this drives him insane. Linda the
wife and mother of the Loman house is no better than her husband. She likes to create illusions that
their life is good and that she is content with it. We all could tell this isn't the case. She often feeds
willy's self–deception. She does this by agreeing with his crazy outburst and accusations instead of
correcting him or helping him. An example of this would be in Act one in the opening scene. Linda:
Where were you all day? You look terrible. Willy: I got as far as a little above Yonkers. I stopped for
a cup of coffee. Maybe it was the coffee. Linda: What? Willy: I suddenly couldn't drive anymore.
The car kept going off onto the shoulder, y'know? Linda: Oh. Maybe it was the steering again. I
don't think Angelo knows the Studebaker. Willy: No, it's me, it's me. Suddenly I realize I'm going
sixty mile an hour and I don't remember the last five minutes. I'm–I can't seem to–keep my mind on

I came back ten miles an hour. It took me nearly four hours from Yonkers. Linda:

Sexual Harassment in School Essay
Sexual Harassment in School Sexual Harassment in school usually occurs during passing, recess, or
during lunch. Sexual harassment can range from a quick glance to a hoot or whistle. In many cases,
one does not know that they are being harassed or harassing someone. Maybe a friend tells you a
dirty joke or someone who you see everyday and who you do not know gives you an unusual smile.
Do you feel offended by the joke? Are you uncomfortable with the person giving you a smile? Some
may say that this is more of a paranoia problem and then just push it aside, but in most cases, it is
not. Harassment usually is instigated by heterosexual males either trying to pick up a female or
teasing a homosexual. Harassment usually begins in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The other partner gets scared and runs away. Sometimes, when it's the male mate that is making the
moves, the female doesn't have enough power to say 'no'. Guilt trips or ridicule can be used to entice
the victim to submit. Many women are brought up to believe that if they do not "give in", that they
are teasing the man or that if they do give in, they will be with the man forever. Unfortunately our
society does not always hold a man responsible for the obvious consequences of such actions. Too
frequently young women become further victimized by becoming single parents without the moral
or financial support of men. One of the saddest things about sexual harassment is that men and
women feel uncomfortable through no fault of their own, but somehow end up blaming themselves
for their own victimization. Frequently our society puts the blame for an attraction on the victim
rather than on the perpetrator. It is not uncommon in court cases for the defendant's attorney to place
the blame for harassment on the victim of the crime. Preventing 5 The fact is that any person has the

they still are harassed. Unfortunately our society tends to minimize the impact of

Who Is Gallaudet Sign Language Affect The Deaf Community?
"A day when deaf people and their language are completely accepted–no, more than that, truly
welcomed–as a part of the family of man in which god created diversity not to oppress the minority
who are different, but to enrich the lives of all." This important quote from Laurent Clerc shows his
opinion on the acceptance of Deaf people in the world. He understood through first hand experience
the importance of communication and education for the Deaf community. Eventually with the help
of Thomas Gallaudet Sign Language was brought to the US and together the pair helped improve
the lives of Deaf people living in the United States. Laurent Clerc was a deaf man from France born
on December 26th 1785. He was not born Deaf however; he became Deaf around the age of 1 after
falling into a fireplace. This incident left Laurent with a scar on his face. The scar eventually became
a part of his name sign which was stroking the letter U down the right cheek. When he was a child
he didn't attend school until the age of 12 when he was enrolled into the Institut National des Jeune
Sourds–Muets. The school was run by Abbe Roch Amroise Sicard and his first teacher was Jean
Massieu. At the school they taught students to communicate through French Sign Lanugage. Laurent
was a very good student but chose not to communicate through speaking. Laurent decided that
signing is the best form of communication for Deaf people so he began to teach and demonstrate his
methods to other people.

Hartford, City That Has Developed Into A Concentric Zone...
Hartford, CT is a well–known city that has developed into a concentric zone fashion. A concentric
zone consists of five zones; Central Business District, Transitional Zone, Working Class Zone,
Residential Zone, and the Commuter Zone. Each zone consists of different qualities that can all be
found in Hartford. Hartford is very similar to Chicago based on the description of Chicago given by
Dr. Burgess. Just like Chicago, Hartford is also a city that has a high crime rate.
The first zone is the Central Business District. This zone is a majority of non–residential buildings
and has an emphasis on business and commerce. Downtown Hartford would be considered a central
business district. This zone also has a population of workers that commute from different towns to
get to work and even from another state. In downtown Hartford, there are many popular businesses,
clubs and restaurants that attract people and customers. Examples of these business include The
Hartford Courant, AETNA and even Capital Community College. Popular restaurants and
attractions include Black–eyed Sally's, Black Bear Saloon and Club NV which is a popular
nightclub. The State Capitol is also located in Downtown Hartford. Some of the people who work in
downtown Hartford live in other towns like Windsor or Bloomfield while others may travel from
Springfield, Massachusetts.
The second zone is the Transitional Zone. The transitional zone is considered the "least desirable
place to live" due to high crime rates,

acquisition of items was tied to an individual's identity. Decades later, Erich Fromm described the
hoarding orientation as a dysfunctional orientation of character. Also during that time many
psychoanalysts, including Freud, believed hoarding arose from an individual's fixation on the anal
phase of development. Difficulties with this stage led to issues with parsimony, orderliness, and
obstinance, known as the anal triad, and was the basis for an anal personality (Frost & Steketee,
2013). In the DSM III, hoarding is one of the criteria listed for obsessive compulsive disorder

As previously stated, hoarding was considered a criteria of OCD and was therefore treated with
cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) that was designed for OCD. This yielded poor results for
individuals with hoarding symptoms. However, CBT tailored to hoarding has produced more
positive results. A multimodal approach using CBT designed for hoarding and group therapy has
been successful as well. Group therapy was helpful to reduce feelings of shame, increase feelings of
inclusivity and cohesion, as well as reduce social isolation. A multimodal approach that included
pharmacotherapy may be beneficial as well. Medication has been proven to be effective for many
depressive and anxiety symptoms. Early research has shown pharmacotherapy to be ineffective for
treating hoarding symptoms (Sorensen, 2013). However, given the high rate of comorbidity with
depression and anxiety, (approximately 75%) pharmacotherapy would be indicated to improve
comorbid conditions in appropriate individuals (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Stigma
Mental illness has an incredible amount of stigma surrounding it, and hoarding is certainly not the
exception. Many popular television shows such as A &E's Hoarders sheds light on the personal
struggles that many of those suffering with hoarding disorder face. For many, these shows provide
education about a disorder they knew little about. For others, the extreme cases precipitate feelings

Essay about Pragmatic Develpment in a Second Language
In line with the fact that speech acts of suggestion themselves have not been studied in the same
capacity as other speech acts (Schmidt, et al., 1995), L2 pragmatics literature on suggestions is also
quite limited. Only a small number of researchers have made attempts to explicitly address
suggestions, how they are used in classroom interaction, and teacher–student conversations in

She found that utterances used to request conveyed more deference than utterances used to suggest.
Banerjee and Carrell (1988) reported that nonnative speakers were significantly less likely to make
suggestions in slightly embarrassing and potentially embarrassing situations than native speakers.
They also found that nonnative speakers might unintentionally appear to be impolite or at least less
polite when making suggestions. Based on their findings, Banerjee and Carrell called on teachers "to
sensitize learners to the fine shades of meaning as they learn to use various syntactic structures (p.
346)" and recommended that pragmatics be integrated into other aspects of language teaching, for
example, along with modals, question forms, conditionals, and imperatives. Bell (1998) also studies
the speech act of suggestion in interlanguage development. He/she examines the production of three

students demonstrated an increase in the level of politeness in their expression of disagreements,
these disagreement were still considered too direct and unmitigated by the hearers. Matsumura

I am writing to invite you, and anyone you would like to bring with you, to learn about the Shoah
curriculum at HHNE.
I am fortunate HHNE has encouraged me to teach a two–month unit about the Shoah to 9th–grade

of anti–Semitism; state–sponsored indoctrination and discrimination against Jews; the ghettoization

aftermath of the Shoah.
The Shoah is the first unit we study because of its gravity, and its ability to elicit empathy in

Plagiarism: Adjusting the Consequence Essay
1 Most universities believe students should be expelled immediately due to the acts of plagiarism.
But is it really safe to jump to such an extreme conclusion for an action that in most cases, require
some sort of investigation or trial? For many years, universities have battled students on this
particular subject. Plagiarism has levels that should be dealt with by first locating the cause,
examining the evidence, and determining whether it was purposely planned or not. Students, just
like their professors, sometimes make simple mistakes and no student should be immediately
expelled for unobvious plagiarism. Immediate expulsion is unruly and unfair to students who

She said "No one had ever defined paraphrasing for me," Because of an immediate expulsion a
student who probably had no record of plagiarism now has a tainted permanent record. Routman
clearly states "Had I thought I had done anything wrong, I, of course, would come forward." Failing
the assignment or points off would have been a much more acceptable punishment for her if she
knew she was going to be expelled immediately. Her father, Brent Routman says, "If you're going to
have a death–penalty sanction, then you've got to build in safeguards for kids that are lost in the

necessary questions to prevent future plagiarism cases.
3 The immediate expulsion of an innocent student unknowledgeable about his or her actions may

Halberstam Case Analysis

  • 1. Halberstam Case Analysis Halberstam along with his brother were both pushed to do well in school and as a result both were able to attend Harvard. Halberstam by his own admission struggled for a period academically at Harvard and almost failed out of school. However it was during this period in the early 1950's that he found is passion for journalism. He worked for the school's daily newspaper The Harvard Crimson and was eventually named managing editor ( ). Halberstam's time working for the Crimson set forth many beliefs and practices he followed his entire career. In an interview for the Academy of Achievement Halberstam indicated how independent the paper was form the University and they took no funding from them to remain that way. Halberstam indicated ... Sabrina conducted a peer mediation group and mutual aid groups, provided services to students in need of crisis intervention, drug and alcohol counseling, grief support and weekly individual sessions. Sabrina presented with a strong work ethic which enabled her to excel in her placement. What impressed me about Sabrina, she was only responsible to do an 8 hour week, but instead did 16 hours, because of her dedication to the students. Her obligation to the enhancement of humanity and continually seeking out occasions to develop her knowledge, impressed me. She served in a leadership capacity of the Social Work Student Alliance and had taken her position to heart. They were involved in activities to promote social justice in the local community, as well as globally. She also participated as a social work peer mentor to a social work junior student. In closing, I believe Sabrina has a range and depth of practice experiences to build on as she continues her studies in graduate school. Sabrina is an insightful and inspiring person that met challenges with unwavering dedication. I am confident that Sabrina will do well in graduate school and will make a difference in the lives that she will touch. I'm pleased to recommend her to you, believing she will succeed in your program as she had in ours. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Sandy Skoglund Essay Sandy Skoglund Sandy Skoglund has been in the forefront of contemporary art in the United States, as well as overseas, for nearly two decades. Her dramatic impact to the art world didn't begin overnight. After sheer dedication to art education she received her BA degree in Studio Art in 1968 from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. Upon getting her BA, she pursued further education at the University of Iowa where she received her MD. With her remarkable educational background, Skoglund decided to expand her horizons by teaching. Her teaching career grew at a rapid pace and she found herself teaching at the University of Hartford from 1973 to 1976. In late 1976, she was offered a position at Rutgers University, New Jersey, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of her works include "Radioactive Cats", "Fox Games", "Walking on Eggshells", and "Shimmering Madness". After seeing Ms. Skoglund's work in the book Artforms , I was totally clueless as to what she was expressing. The particular illustration I'm referring to is "Revenge of the Goldfish". If the name alone sets you back, don't worry you're not the only one. She has an eerie way of taking ordinary things, fish in this case, and forming a scene in which no one could possibly think of. Now that I have done my research on Ms. Skoglund, I have found an irresistible urge to see her work. One thing I like the most about her artwork is that you never know what you are going to get next. Her creativity is absolutely endless. Life magazine listed her as one the world's top 100 photographers and she has received numerous achievement awards for her continued superiority in the creative world of art. She joking stated, "I feel I've succeeded when a museum guard comes in and stares at my exhibitions". I feel as though she has succeeded beyond belief and with being 54 years of age, her will and drive to create new ideas is stronger than ever. A columnist from The Cincinnati Enquirer , Owen Findsen, states it best, "Ms. Skoglud is the rarest artist who has found a voice so unique that it needs a category all it's own." The only thing that I would like to add to that would be that Sandy Skoglund has become a creative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On April 8, 2013, President Barack Obama spoke at the University of Hartford on behalf of those who died in the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut. President Obama addressed the people of the state of Connecticut and on a federal level. The broadcasting networks provided live coverage of President Obama's speech, and a national audience listened as the president's addressing the issues and the next steps forward for the country. The impact of this tragedy and previous massive shootings and Obama's explanation have been a subject of a controversial debate. It is interesting to see and reveal the misconceptions of President Obama's motive to the speech for more gun control and how politicians and individuals are stressing an emotional and safety concern. Within this political environment, and with a charismatic and persuasive use of the pentads, the rhetor's motive was to implement legislation regarding gun control. Barack Obama as the rhetor, directed towards American people to pressure congress to pass new gun legislation in Connecticut, where the massacre took place. After the December 16, 2012 shooting at Newtown Connecticut, there has been a controversial debate among gun control. The National Rifle Association had fiercely lobbied congress to oppose any gun regulations. In this artifact, Obama spoke on behalf of the murders of twenty children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. During his speech, President Obama was hoping to build support among lawmakers for several gun control measures, such as universal background checks. The president has the parents' support to lobby for gun legislation. In addition, Obama's proposal to ban assault rifles and limiting high–ammunition guns; majority of Republicans oppose this proposal. • 21. Essay on The Roots of Bilingual Education The Roots of Bilingual Education A historical perspective on bilingual education is written in the article "Bilingual Education Traces its U.S. Roots to the Colonial Era" in the magazine Education Week. The author begins by writing, "Bilingual education has been part of the immigrant experience in America since the Colonial periods, when native–language schooling was the rule rather than the exception" (21). When immigrant groups settled in the United States they taught their children in their own languages, despite some attempts to impose English instruction. Many do not believe it but bilingual education was started before 1800 when German, French, Scandanavian, Polish, Dutch and Italian schools were established. From 1839 to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1930's English as a second language method was created to teach foreign diplomats and university students but then it was extended to minority children. Students were removed from regular "sink or swim" classrooms typically for 45 minutes a day, two to five times a week for compensatory instruction. It was not until 1963 when the bilingual schooling was reborn with the creation of the bilingual programs in Dade County, Florida by the Cubans who fled to Miami after the Cuban revolution in 1959. Bilingual education is a comprehensive educational approach that involves more than just learning English skills. Children are taught all the areas first in their native language. Oral expressions and reading are developed in native language courses and English is taught formally in English as a Second Language classes. Once the children have learned to speak English, they are taught to read it. Instruction through English in cognitive areas begins when the child can function in that language and experiences no academic handicap due to insufficient knowledge of the language. Although this seemed to be a good idea at first, tensions grew rapidly because the French and British had bad relations, and the British weren't happy that we were trading with the French. The British in 1812 began seizing ships from the United States in which they stole goods the United States was trading with their opposing enemy, the French, as well as seizing American sailors. The sailors that were captured by the British were forced into doing labor for their navy and if they refused to follow their strict stipulations they would be thrown overboard. On December of 1814 the Federalists spoke out about their grievances towards the war of 1812 in what is known as the Hartford convention. There was even talk about the New England states feeling as though they were better off on their own and that they could secede from the Union secretively at the Hartford convention which made it an extremely significant meeting per–say. New England delegates quieted that theory during the convention, and in change proposed amendments for congress to make it harder to declare war in the future, and they wanted to diminish the power of the federal government over the states to a smaller level as well. The federalists stated that they were providing finances towards a war with money that they basically didn't have to waste. They already had limited trade with the French and the British because of Jefferson's Embargo Act of 1807 which reduced trade with those nations to begin with. The federalist wanted to keep peaceful relations with England for trading purposes because it brought the merchants a source of income and goods, and the war of 1812 basically tarnished that. I can't say I've ever fantasized a dream job, I've been a pretty realistic person my entire life, but that's not to say I don't have a dream. My dream is to help people. However, what makes Trinity distinctive is the freedom that you give your prospective graduates to delve into their ideas and interests. That is why bars particularly have become a popular attraction for college students to migrate to after a long week of classes. Stress from the syllabi and the eagerness to socialize are factors in the motivation getting college students out and about. My curiosity as a college student myself, has led me to study other college students' behavior when they go to bars and "distress" from arduous schoolwork. Failure Is Always And Option Failure is Always and Option Shenshuai Chen ENGR: 2110: Engineering Fundamentals 1: Statics Introduction Engineers ought to maintain commendable design and implementation standards in the development of any project. In fact, doing the contrary jeopardizes the welfare of the people utilizing the materials created. As such, the knowledge on static concepts needs to be prioritized in the development and implementation of engineering projects to minimize the possibilities of failure due to poor planning. In 1978, the Hartford Civic Center coliseum collapse raised concerns on the need for proper error identification in the engineering process. This tragedy occurred when the roof collapsed after a heavy snowfall in the region. During the event, no casualties were experienced since no one was at the stadium in the time of the catastrophe (Martin & Delatte, 2001). Nonetheless, the lack of casualties does not alleviate the errors made by the engineers in the design process. Additionally, the failure of this structure sparks numerous controversies on the ethical responsibilities of engineers in the design and maintenance of structures. For a fact, the collapse of the Hartford Civic Center has many ethical implications and it was a design and management blunder by the engineers tasked with this responsibility. Description of failure The collapse of this structure was mainly attributed to improper calculations and anticipation of the possible errors in the design employed. According ... This added point helps us to fully understand the role identity politics played in Puerto Ricans' lives. Puerto Ricans first entered the realm of identity politics with their migration to Hartford, beginning in the 1950s. Their motivation was primarily economic; that is, Hartford had an abundance of job opportunities in restaurants, stores, factories, and farms in comparison to New York City and Puerto Rico (Cruz, 37). Saying he is very well liked in Hartford but then says he is ignored and unnoticed most of the time. This shows that he frequently uses self–deception to deceive himself about his success. The truth about his life however is close by and this drives him insane. Linda the wife and mother of the Loman house is no better than her husband. She likes to create illusions that their life is good and that she is content with it. We all could tell this isn't the case. She often feeds willy's self–deception. She does this by agreeing with his crazy outburst and accusations instead of correcting him or helping him. An example of this would be in Act one in the opening scene. Linda: Where were you all day? You look terrible. Willy: I got as far as a little above Yonkers. I stopped for a cup of coffee. Maybe it was the coffee. Linda: What? Willy: I suddenly couldn't drive anymore. The car kept going off onto the shoulder, y'know? Linda: Oh. Maybe it was the steering again. I don't think Angelo knows the Studebaker. Willy: No, it's me, it's me. Suddenly I realize I'm going sixty mile an hour and I don't remember the last five minutes. I'm–I can't seem to–keep my mind on it. Linda: Maybe it's your glasses. You never went for your new glasses. Willy: No, I see everything. I came back ten miles an hour. It took me nearly four hours from Yonkers. Linda: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sexual harassment can range from a quick glance to a hoot or whistle. In many cases, one does not know that they are being harassed or harassing someone. Maybe a friend tells you a dirty joke or someone who you see everyday and who you do not know gives you an unusual smile. Do you feel offended by the joke? Are you uncomfortable with the person giving you a smile? Some may say that this is more of a paranoia problem and then just push it aside, but in most cases, it is not. Harassment usually is instigated by heterosexual males either trying to pick up a female or teasing a homosexual. Harassment usually begins in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The other partner gets scared and runs away. Sometimes, when it's the male mate that is making the moves, the female doesn't have enough power to say 'no'. Guilt trips or ridicule can be used to entice the victim to submit. Many women are brought up to believe that if they do not "give in", that they are teasing the man or that if they do give in, they will be with the man forever. Unfortunately our society does not always hold a man responsible for the obvious consequences of such actions. Too frequently young women become further victimized by becoming single parents without the moral or financial support of men. One of the saddest things about sexual harassment is that men and women feel uncomfortable through no fault of their own, but somehow end up blaming themselves for their own victimization. Frequently our society puts the blame for an attraction on the victim rather than on the perpetrator. It is not uncommon in court cases for the defendant's attorney to place the blame for harassment on the victim of the crime. Preventing 5 The fact is that any person has the right to dress or speak or anything else in whatever way they want. This is supposed to be a free country. No human being deserves to be treated as if the way they choose to express themselves is a crime. Many of the victims are not even trying to attract any attention to themselves though, and they still are harassed. Unfortunately our society tends to minimize the impact of ... Catharine was born in East Hampton, New York, in 1800. When she was 10, her family moved to Litchfield, Connecticut where she began her education at Sarah Pierce's Academy for Young Women. When Catharine was 16 years old, her mother died of tuberculosis, leaving Catharine to care for her younger siblings. Catharine cared for her siblings like they were her children. Catharine Beecher's early career was devoted to promoting education for women and the beginning of education as a profession. While still in her teens, Catharine wrote poems that were published. At age 22, she became engaged to a Yale University professor named Alexander Fisher, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this time, the seminary had become one of the premier women's schools in the United States. Upon arriving in Cincinnati, Catharine opened another women's school, the Western Female Institute, but this school did not last due to the lack of financial support caused by the Panic of 1837, an economic depression in the US. During the 1840s, Catharine worked to recruit teachers for schools on the western frontier and organized the Central Committee for Promoting National Education. This organization promoted teacher education and presented to the ideas of education as a profession. In 1852, Catharine Beecher was one of the founders of the American Women's Educational Association, which was for the higher learning institutions for women in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Through her writings and the schools she opened, Catharine fought for the women to be taught history, Latin, rhetoric, algebra, logic, physical education, and natural philosophy. She also introduced "domestics" education class, which is known as family and consumer sciences. She believed that preparing women to be respected caregivers was the key to provide women to become teachers, which Catharine saw as naturally suited for women. She also advocated for the provision of a basic education for all children of every social class. "A day when deaf people and their language are completely accepted–no, more than that, truly welcomed–as a part of the family of man in which god created diversity not to oppress the minority who are different, but to enrich the lives of all." This important quote from Laurent Clerc shows his opinion on the acceptance of Deaf people in the world. He understood through first hand experience the importance of communication and education for the Deaf community. Eventually with the help of Thomas Gallaudet Sign Language was brought to the US and together the pair helped improve the lives of Deaf people living in the United States. Laurent Clerc was a deaf man from France born on December 26th 1785. He was not born Deaf however; he became Deaf around the age of 1 after falling into a fireplace. This incident left Laurent with a scar on his face. The scar eventually became a part of his name sign which was stroking the letter U down the right cheek. When he was a child he didn't attend school until the age of 12 when he was enrolled into the Institut National des Jeune Sourds–Muets. The school was run by Abbe Roch Amroise Sicard and his first teacher was Jean Massieu. At the school they taught students to communicate through French Sign Lanugage. Laurent was a very good student but chose not to communicate through speaking. Laurent decided that signing is the best form of communication for Deaf people so he began to teach and demonstrate his methods to other people. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 129. Hartford, City That Has Developed Into A Concentric Zone... Hartford, CT is a well–known city that has developed into a concentric zone fashion. A concentric zone consists of five zones; Central Business District, Transitional Zone, Working Class Zone, Residential Zone, and the Commuter Zone. Each zone consists of different qualities that can all be found in Hartford. Hartford is very similar to Chicago based on the description of Chicago given by Dr. Burgess. Just like Chicago, Hartford is also a city that has a high crime rate. The first zone is the Central Business District. This zone is a majority of non–residential buildings and has an emphasis on business and commerce. Downtown Hartford would be considered a central business district. This zone also has a population of workers that commute from different towns to get to work and even from another state. In downtown Hartford, there are many popular businesses, clubs and restaurants that attract people and customers. Examples of these business include The Hartford Courant, AETNA and even Capital Community College. Popular restaurants and attractions include Black–eyed Sally's, Black Bear Saloon and Club NV which is a popular nightclub. The State Capitol is also located in Downtown Hartford. Some of the people who work in downtown Hartford live in other towns like Windsor or Bloomfield while others may travel from Springfield, Massachusetts. The second zone is the Transitional Zone. • 133. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ( Ocd ) acquisition of items was tied to an individual's identity. Decades later, Erich Fromm described the hoarding orientation as a dysfunctional orientation of character. Also during that time many psychoanalysts, including Freud, believed hoarding arose from an individual's fixation on the anal phase of development. Difficulties with this stage led to issues with parsimony, orderliness, and obstinance, known as the anal triad, and was the basis for an anal personality (Frost & Steketee, 2013). In the DSM III, hoarding is one of the criteria listed for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). It remained that way through DSM–III–R, DSM–IV, and DSM–IV–R (Frost & Steketee, 2013). In the DSM–5, hoarding disorder is classified as its own mental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As previously stated, hoarding was considered a criteria of OCD and was therefore treated with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) that was designed for OCD. This yielded poor results for individuals with hoarding symptoms. However, CBT tailored to hoarding has produced more positive results. A multimodal approach using CBT designed for hoarding and group therapy has been successful as well. Group therapy was helpful to reduce feelings of shame, increase feelings of inclusivity and cohesion, as well as reduce social isolation. A multimodal approach that included pharmacotherapy may be beneficial as well. Medication has been proven to be effective for many depressive and anxiety symptoms. Early research has shown pharmacotherapy to be ineffective for treating hoarding symptoms (Sorensen, 2013). However, given the high rate of comorbidity with depression and anxiety, (approximately 75%) pharmacotherapy would be indicated to improve comorbid conditions in appropriate individuals (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Stigma Mental illness has an incredible amount of stigma surrounding it, and hoarding is certainly not the exception. Many popular television shows such as A &E's Hoarders sheds light on the personal struggles that many of those suffering with hoarding disorder face. For many, these shows provide education about a disorder they knew little about. For others, the extreme cases precipitate feelings of disgust which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Pragmatic Develpment in a Second Language In line with the fact that speech acts of suggestion themselves have not been studied in the same capacity as other speech acts (Schmidt, et al., 1995), L2 pragmatics literature on suggestions is also quite limited. Only a small number of researchers have made attempts to explicitly address suggestions, how they are used in classroom interaction, and teacher–student conversations in conferences. Overall, a unanimous agreement exists among the available research (Bardovi–Harlig and Hartford, 1990, 1993; Bardovi–Harlig, 1996; Rintell, 1979; Bell, 1998; Matsumura, 2001) that L2 learners fall short of institutional expectations to use pragmatic strategies effectively because of a lack of the socio–cultural and sociolinguistic knowledge ... Banerjee and Carrell (1988) reported that nonnative speakers were significantly less likely to make suggestions in slightly embarrassing and potentially embarrassing situations than native speakers. They also found that nonnative speakers might unintentionally appear to be impolite or at least less polite when making suggestions. Based on their findings, Banerjee and Carrell called on teachers "to sensitize learners to the fine shades of meaning as they learn to use various syntactic structures (p. 346)" and recommended that pragmatics be integrated into other aspects of language teaching, for example, along with modals, question forms, conditionals, and imperatives. Bell (1998) also studies the speech act of suggestion in interlanguage development. He/she examines the production of three speech acts including: requests, suggestion, and disagreements. Bell (1998) compares the requests and suggestions of a group of high–beginning level Korean ESL students. He found that while these students demonstrated an increase in the level of politeness in their expression of disagreements, these disagreement were still considered too direct and unmitigated by the hearers. I am fortunate HHNE has encouraged me to teach a two–month unit about the Shoah to 9th–grade World History students. We learn about bystanders, victims, perpetrators and upstanders; the history of anti–Semitism; state–sponsored indoctrination and discrimination against Jews; the ghettoization of Jews; the "Final Solution;" responses to the Shoah in the form of resistance and rescue; and the aftermath of the Shoah. The Shoah is the first unit we study because of its gravity, and its ability to elicit empathy in students. Moreover, it sets a tone of seriousness, meaningfulness, understanding, unity, and collaboration that lasts. We then spiral back to the topic of the Shoah throughout the remainder of the course. ... This student has been so proud of his great–grandparents that he is in the process of converting to Judaism. But is it really safe to jump to such an extreme conclusion for an action that in most cases, require some sort of investigation or trial? For many years, universities have battled students on this particular subject. Plagiarism has levels that should be dealt with by first locating the cause, examining the evidence, and determining whether it was purposely planned or not. Students, just like their professors, sometimes make simple mistakes and no student should be immediately expelled for unobvious plagiarism. Routman clearly states "Had I thought I had done anything wrong, I, of course, would come forward." Failing the assignment or points off would have been a much more acceptable punishment for her if she knew she was going to be expelled immediately. Her father, Brent Routman says, "If you're going to have a death–penalty sanction, then you've got to build in safeguards for kids that are lost in the shuffle." Creating "safeguards" for students will probably build confidence in students to ask the necessary questions to prevent future plagiarism cases. 3 The immediate expulsion of an innocent student unknowledgeable about his or her actions may even cause emotional hardships which may lead to an unexpected case of violence among peers. In The Hartford Courant, Loretta Waldman shares reports on a case that could have caused unnecessary violence because of an immediate expulsion due to plagiarism.
