debated topic of air pollution from greenhouse gases. Certainly, this type of pollution will have a

For as long as I can remember, my family has always purchased plastic water bottles and until
recently, I have taken a new stance on them. As a student at Texas Tech University, one of my spring
classes this past semester opened my eyes to the negative aspects of plastic water bottles. Within the
class, I watched the documentary "Tapped" by Jason Lindsey and Stephanie Soechtig, which
focused specifically on the bottled water industry. Even though plastic water bottles are highly
popular in first and developing countries, recent evidence shows drastic consequences in both
environmental and health related topics.
Today plastic water bottles are putting a strain on the environment and highlighting their wasteful
properties. A study by Brita, a water filtration company, shows that "Americans discard 38 billion
plastic water bottles a year, and it takes 1.5 billion barrels of oil to produce them" (York 2). The
amount of oil that is being used to produce the plastic of bottled water can be used elsewhere like
gasoline for cars and electricity for homes. Even though the plastic from bottled water is recyclable,
The Container Recycling Institute (CR1) states that "eight out of 10 water bottles end up in
landfills" and end up being washed into streams and oceans (Knopper 36). CR1 also states that
"only 14 percent of plastic water bottles purchased annually in the U.S. are recycled" (Burbank 23).

continues to get worse every day. We live in a disposable society where fast food is served in plastic
or Styrofoam containers and discarded instead of glass dishes. Many people use plastic water bottles
instead drinking from the tap. Plastic soda bottles are used instead of glass returnable bottles. Plastic
grocery bags have replaced the brown paper grocery bags. Unfortunately, not enough people
properly dispose so all this plastic ends up as plastic pollution by littering road ways, parks, beaches,
and oceans, or it gets buried in landfills. For many years scientists tried to develop plastic instead of
using natural made products such as ivory from elephant tusks and tortoise shells from turtles.

Do Americans realize all the opportunities they have to make the environment a better place by
recycling? When Americans recycle, it makes a positive difference to the environment. Growing up,
there was always recycling bins at school, at public places, and at local businesses that were
available 24/7 for people to use. There are many benefits to recycle such as less trash in landfills,
resources conservation, energy conservation, environmental conservation, environment protection,
and financial benefits. With these benefits come the items that can be recycled like aluminum,
plastic bottles, newspaper/paper, and electronics. The first benefit of recycling is it creates less trash
in the landfills. Americans throw away approximately 100 million tons of trash per year causing

Another benefit would be resource conservation which helps conserve the environment. This benefit

Recycling isn't as good as it is thought to be. Although there are people who think recycled materials
can help preserve natural resources, there are some items that it can not be used for. Andrew

the demand with just recycling alone. He also stated that aluminum weakens after being used, so it

the problem we chose to focus on is recycling. In the world of engineering, recycling has been a hot
topic for many years, so for one to say that deriving an idea that hasn't been done before is difficult,
that would be an understatement. As any group of well–educated engineers would, we started our
journey at the drawing board. The brainstorming process was potentially the most time consuming
section of our task, given we easily spent over fifteen hours spouting off ideas and concepts for
anything that we thought we could do that we could patent. We then realized it wasn't just about us
getting a patented idea, it was about making a difference. So, we then realized something that could
make a difference is one of the things that we have been taught the importance of since we were in
elementary school. That was recycling.
Now that the first step of the brainstorming process was over, which was finding a general problem
area, we then needed to figure out what in the world it was that we were going to do that no one else
had done before. After a couple of days of brainstorming, we quickly realized that instead of coming
up with a fresh idea, innovating what is imperfect was the perfect way to approach this. In order to
find where the problems laid, we had to go to the consumer. We began asking our friends, family,
and even a few random people what they thought the biggest issue was that was hindering them
from recycling. After a few conversations, accessibility and attraction seemed to be the greatest
factors.
With this in mind, we of course went back to the brainstorming process to figure out what exactly it
was that we were going to to do and how we would do it. After a few off the wall ideas, followed by
some mediocre ones, we decided we were going to innovate the recycling bin itself. We figured up a
plan to make the bin something that people could interact with and that could shred whatever
recyclable material that you put in it without requiring electric power. We then went with a slow,
torque based, hand crank that would be attached to some sort of shredding mechanism, one strong

To people, water bottles can be viewed as a portable refreshing beverage or a disgraceful
accumulative waste. In "Defense of Water Bottle", Lauria states that the ban of water bottles only
damages one's health and environment. This is a cause of people's preference to drink other
beverages such as soda and energy drinks, beverages that require more energy to produce than water
bottles. As a consequence, one's health diminishes because there is no alternative choices other than
sugary sweets. Lauria's use of evidence and logic, strongly strengthens her claim to dissuade the ban

The value of recycling paper in a consumer society is the saving of natural resources which would
be for each tonne of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space,
4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water. Again there would be the ecological value of
less landfill space consumed.
Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a television for 15 minutes and when you
consider in a consumer society the average household goes through 330 glass bottles and jars per
