The History of the Song Dynasty
For followers of the history of Western Civilization Marco Polo's visit to China was a major event.
What most do not know or appreciate is the fact that such visit occurred in one of China's golden
ages in a period known as the Song dynasty. The Song dynasty last for over three centuries from 960
to approximately 1279 and was characterized by a vibrant and prosperous economy which was
accompanied by a rich cultural life. The prosperity enjoyed during the Song dynasty transcended
various aspects of Chinese society. In agriculture techniques were developed that greatly improved
the output of food products that was necessary due to the rapid increase in the nation's population.
Division of labor practices were introduced that allowed the crafts business to not only introduce
new products but also improved upon the quality of existing products. It was during the Song
dynasty that the use of paper currency was also introduced which made trading across the various
territories within China easier and more expedient. In the areas of science and technology, it was
during the Song dynasty that several of the more well–known Chinese developments took place.
Typography, the use of movable type, and the invention of the compass occurred during the late
stages of the Song dynasty and were evidence of how advanced Chinese culture was during this
period. The Chinese had already been using gunpowder in the production of fireworks before the
Song dynasty began but during this period more

Dynasties From The Post-Classical Era, And Post Classical...
Social structure is something that has been present all over history. There are many aspects used to
define the social structure of a civilization, like race, ethnicity, class, gender, social mobility, and
religion. One civilization in particular, China, has had the social structure of its reason evolve over
time. Chinese dynasties from the Classical Era, the Post–Classical Era, and the Early Modern Period
each established their own take on these categories. The dynasties from their respective time periods
each differentiated themselves from the previous time period and allowed themselves to also have
similarities between them. Chinese dynasties from the Classical Era and the Post–Classical Era are
able to determine the factors of social structure that remain consistent and the factors that change
throughout the time periods, which are class, gender, and social mobility. In the same way, the Ming
and Qing dynasties of China from the Post–Classical Era compare to the Song and Tang dynasties
from the Early Modern Period in China to define the consistencies of social structure through class,
gender, and social mobility. One of the primary aspects of social structure in China was class. In the
Classical Era, the Han and Qin dynasties ran China as a bureaucracy based on a person's importance
to society. One of the main reasons status did not pertain to the amount of wealth a person had is
that during this time, China was an agrarian based society, which meant that farmers did

The Impact Of The Manchu Invasion Of China
One might wonder what life was like in China 300 years ago? Or even think about the aspects of life
just 100 years ago? Others ponder the history of China, and how the country came to be. The
Manchus, and their invasion of China played an enormous role in all of these thoughts. The Manchu
invasion of China during the 17th century, was an extremely significant event in Chinese history,
that left important impacts on China. It also helped to influence culture for years to come.
The Manchu people were a, "federation of various tribes living in what is today China's provinces of
Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang"who belonged to the Tungus branch of the Atlantic people
(Theobald, "The Manchus"). The Manchus replaced the Ming Dynasty in China after the decline of
the Ming in 1644.
The Ming Dynasty ruled China from 1368 until the dynasty commenced deterioration. By the
beginning of the 1600s, the Ming began to lose power due to "threats from Barbarians on all sides,
political in–fighting," rebellions, and poor loyalty in the military (Ryder). Likewise, the spread of
violence in China contributed to the collapse of the Ming Dynasty (Zarrow). In the year 1644, the
Chinese rebels overthrew the dynasty (Williams). At this time, the Ming emperor committed suicide
as the rebel armies invaded Beijing (Zarrow). After the rebels overthrew the Ming, the Manchu
people stepped in to try and gain power.
The Manchus were able to establish clear power due to their strong "discipline, unity,

Song Dynasty
The Song Dynasty was the golden age of landscape painting in Chinese history. Many artists
developed landscape painting during Five Dynasties so, the development in the Song period was
smoothly started. Especially emperor Song Huizong enjoyed contribution on art cultivation during
the Song Dynasty, so, the soaring of Chinese landscape painting was possible (Hough, "Sung
Dynasty (1960–1179)"). Features of this period are vision of nature and scholarly officials'
participation in the art field. These officials expressed their political view and cultivated themselves

Also, he used Blue and Green coloring style from the Tang Dynasty. As a traditionalist, Zhao used
Tang's feature in a revival meaning. Besides the simplified style, he successfully described beauty of
this region by giving a sense of classical elegance and calmness (Autumn Colors on the Que and
Hua Mountains). The impression that I got from this painting is beauty of the simplicity. Compare to
previous and later Chinese landscape painting, Zhao's simple brushwork makes me to approach
easily and appreciate the overall painting. Also, not just drawing the overall mountain included by
numerous trees, I like how Zhao described each tree's feature like its leaves, brunches or color. Zhao
painted the mountain with color blue instead of green and I think this is creative and beautiful at the
same time. He had an innovative choice which makes him more special. The reason why this
painting is so popular and unique is because of Zhao's innovation using calligraphy in landscape
painting. The use of calligraphy is also shown well in other paintings by Zhao. We can see several
written calligraphy around mountains and trees. For example, Four Anecdotes from the Life of
Wang Xizhi is a great example of Zhao's devotion on Calligraphy in Chinese art History.

Great dynasties in Imperialistic China
Ancient China was always able to flourish as a powerful economic and imperialistic country.
Behind this great amount of early success were great dynasties that played great roles in China's
history. China has always been highly influenced by its great ancient dynasties. These dynasties
were able to establish monetary systems, road and canal systems for trade, and also build great
elaborate historic structures that still stand today. They also influenced different philosophies such
as Taoism and Confucianism. In the long history of China, many great dynasties appear that have
helped a lot to the development of the whole country. Among them, there are ... Show more content

They also built a tomb for the emperor containing giant detailed sculptures of each one of his
soldiers called the Terracotta Army. Even though this dynasty only lasted 15 years, the Qin's hold an
important part in Chinese history and it shows great influence on the later dynasties. The Han
dynasty was another highly successful dynasty in Chinese history it covered over four centuries
from 206 BC–220 AD and it is known as the "Golden Age" in Chinese history. They were
considered this for many reasons; they had the city of Chang'an which was one of the two largest
cities in the ancient world at this time. The dynasty had a large growth in population and
urbanization which allowed for an increase of industry and trade which developed on the Silk Road
routes. This ultimately led to an increase in economic growth. This empire had Liu Bang ruling as
the first emperor but under him they had a bureaucracy so they also implemented a civil service
exam to ensure the best people fit for the job were working in the government and under the
emperor. The Han dynasty's government system was in some way implemented throughout the
imperial history of China. The Hans also improved iron amour and swords by making them stronger
and more flexible. With new and improved weapons and tactics

The Dynasty Of Chinese History Essay
The Six Dynasty period in Chinese historiography is often classified with moments of conflict,
revolt, strife, famine, disunity, and not innovation. Historians and academics categorize the period as
a placeholder between the more significant Han China–206 BCE to 220 CE–and the Tang dynasty–
618 to 907 CE. Understandably, Han China's military, infrastructure, and civil capabilities were
rivalled only by that of the Roman Empire, and even then, the Han dynasties administrative
capabilities were rivalled by none. The Tang period is widely considered to be the high point of
Chinese culture and civilization, where cosmopolitan China emerged with force vastly shaping
China for centuries to come. The significance of the Han and Tang dynasties is not in question, it is
the lack of importance that historians confer on the Six Dynasties period. Admittedly the Six
Dynasty period in Chinese history can be categorized as a warring period, in which China did not
develop unilaterally, but separately along fractured lines (split both north–south, and east–west).
Much like the European medieval period, there are few accessible sources from early–medieval
china, and because of this, China's six dynasty period is brushed over as a period of little
advancement and innovation. The "Dark Ages" in Europe use to receive the same scholarly
interpretation as a period of stagnation.

Ancient China 's Trade And Economy
Ancient China 's Trade and Economy
From as early as 2100 BCE to as late as 1912 CE, China lived and prospered in the period of the
dynasties (Timeline of Chinese History and Dynasties). The dynastic period included successions of
rulers who usually descended from the same family. After the ruler passed away, their successor
took their preceder 's sole–reigning position of emperor. The Xia Dynasty started the period of the
dynasties in 2100 BCE. (Timeline of Chinese History and Dynasties). The Qing Dynasty marked the
end of the dynastic period in 1912 CE (Timeline of Chinese History and Dynasties). In between the
first and last dynasties, China experienced a time of economic, social, environmental, and religious
growth that affected all of the people of China. Traders and merchants that traveled the Chinese
trading systems tremendously contributed to the amplification of trade of goods, skills, ideas,
customs, and messages. Humans, most often slaves, built roads and canals such as the Silk Road and
the Grand Canal across and through mountains, deserts, and rivers to facilitate ways to connect with
China 's other surrounding countries. During the dynastic period, China developed a strong and
diverse economy and culture through their unique and innovative trading routes, the Silk Road and
the Grand Canal. Before the creation of the Silk Road and the Grand Canal, The people in China

China: Then and Now Essay
The Chinese dynastic system was highly admired for its vast structural integrity which allowed it to
persevere for more than two millennia. The Xia Dynasty was the first recorded dynasty in Chinese
history, founded by a man named Shun who renounced his throne to his trusted official Yu. Rather
than pass the power to someone qualified for the position, Yu then entrusted the Dynasty to his son
Qi, setting the precedence for the Dynastic rule. 1 This ushered in the Hereditary System which was
followed by many dynasties to come. Under the hereditary system the power was passed down
through the family members. This system also had an added benefit of ensuring stability and
continuity within the nation's infrastructure.2
However in the later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the rulers began to do poorly, Heaven was believed to show their depreciation with natural
disasters. Upon the observation of these signs, the nobles would overthrow the current Dynasty
which would be followed by another that was believed to have obtained the lost Mandate from the
previous tyrannical rulers. 6
The cycle of rulers followed this trend, summarizing the succession of dynasties in early China. In
essence, the belief in the Mandate of Heaven empowered the success of the dynastic system,
instilling stability of infrastructure where stability was lost through riots and the inability of the
rulers.7 This stability among the Chinese people even allowed the successful control of China under
alien peoples.8
The Mongols, an ethnic group north of China, successfully ruled the Chinese for many years by
conquering their dynasties with brute force. The first major Mongolian dynasty was referred to as
the Yuan Dynasty, prevalent from 1264 to 1368.9 However, Mongolian rule over the Chinese
citizens was not maintained through the same aggressiveness they used to first conquer them. The
Mongols understood that in order to have control within an alien country, they must adopt some of
the established customs. They not only accepted and incorporated Chinese customs

Many civilizations made accomplishments in farming but the Tang's accomplishments were very
important. One of the biggest advancements in farming was the three field system. The three field
system was a system in the Tang dynasty where everyone gets enough arable land to farm and
produce food for themselves. This was important because it allowed every family to have a food and
it prevented the very wealthy people from buying up all of the land. In other dynasties and empires,
rich people buying all of the land was a major problem. The Tang wanted to avoid this because they
knew the outcome of having a rich people controlling all of the farming land. The middle class and
poor people wouldn't be able to live and the economy would be very bad. This system gave people
land according to their needs. For example, older people and widows got less land than a man with a
family. (Theobald, 2015) Every adult male was allowed eighty mu, which was a measurement of
land, old and sick people were allowed forty mu, widows received thirty mu, and lower class
merchants and craftsmen got ten mu. This system benefited the economy because since everyone
had enough food, they could specialize in their own crafts like blacksmithing and art. Another
benefit from the food surplus that this system brought is that the government found a new strain of
rice that grew much quicker and was less work to grow. This gave the Tang an

The ancient history of China has several aspects that have changed over the years, slowly
developing a diverse process compared to the past. Although China has reformed over the years, but
the history remains within the society. However, many of these improvements would have
similarities closely linking back to the history of how Chinese fortune telling was created. Back in
1600 BCE during the Shang Dynasty, fortune telling had used the discovery of oracle bones to
uncover one's path. Later different techniques evolved over time such as the I–Ching method in the
Zhou Dynasty from 1046 BCE, as well as many others throughout the dynasties that now

I–Ching had become the new method that was discovered during the Zhou Dynasty to tell fortunes.
The technique of I–Ching also known as the book of changes was a method formed with sixty–four

lines are broken or unbroken, it gives a meaning behind it of the fortunes. The representations of

hexagrams can be created through the procedure of throwing yellow straws or a coin toss. Slowly, I–

popularity of the new fortune telling method, eventually, this led to the neglection of oracle bones as
it was not used as frequently as it was during the Shang Dynasty. Although oracle bones had been
replaced by I–Ching, oracle bones were still the beginning of the existent of fortune telling, which
has an importance of value within the history of creating a further development of changes in
Chinese fortune telling. Hence, this represents that fortune telling had developed within the Zhou
dynasty by creating a change in the future of how fortune telling will continue to

The Importance Of The Chinese Garden Architecture
In the early 1636, the place where the Chinese kings live, the construction of the Chinese garden
architecture first started, when the Chinese emperor chose a city as the earth and the use of financial
resources in his hands. The King's builder's team started building the Yu palace garden building,
which has a beautiful grand mansion that provides the emperor with a place to live in. The Yu
Garden is primarily located in the Yellow River basin in South China, in the Beijing area. This is the
product of China's two thousand years of the feudal dynasty regularly change; and the development
of China has stopped developing for millennia. As a consequence, the government at that time
stopped communicating with other countries. "For a significant number of years, China kept up

The Han Dynasty By Ikeda Chapter Summaries
Being named like an introductory text for undergraduate students, this book consists of the original
and latest – and sometimes somewhat complicated for beginners – findings by three current and
former professors of the University of Tokyo: Mizoguchi, Ikeda and Kojima. All of them are
distinguished scholars of Chinese philosophy: Mizoguchi and Kojima are distinguished scholar of
Confucianism, and Ikeda, who now teaches at Shandong University in China, is experienced and
outstanding researcher of Taoism. From an oversimplified perspective, the history of China would
be understood as just a history of the changes of dynasties, and there had been no "progress" or
"advance" before the Xinhai Revolution of 1911, which overthrew China's last imperial dynasty;

Economic Power In Imperial China
Economic Power
One of the main reasons China has a boost in soft power mentioned in the previous paragraph, as
Joseph Nye said, is the significant rise of economic power, which is also one of the key elements of
the Chinese Dream. Considering the economic history of imperial China, there are several strong
points. Start from the earliest, the Han Dynasty (206 BC–AD 220), which has a massive
urbanization, huge population growth, stable currency and very importantly, the open up of Silk
Road. These allowed commercial activities developed in a rapid rate at that time, and enabled the
trade with Europe through the Silk Road. Han achieved a very high level of gross domestic product
at that time, which was roughly equals to $450 per capita in 1990's US dollar.
Move forward to the Tang Dynasty (618–907), another golden period of Chinese history, which has
recovered from the long period of wars, with the population surpassing the Han Dynasty. China
enjoyed a long peaceful period of economic development since the Emperor Taizong of Tang, one of
the greatest emperors in Chinese history. Taizong regulated the market, and more importantly the
taxation system; he set various standards of price and quality of certain goods, and left the market to
the people.

Confucianism originated from Kong Fuzi a Chinese philosopher around 551–479 BCE. It was

they helped with western ideas making them more accepting in the court. The most importantly in

Liu Bang: Most Influential Imperial Dynasties In China
There is much debate about the greatest or most successful person in history. Greatness is often
defined as "having ability, quality, or eminence considerably above the normal or average". Many
leaders fit this definition and have accomplished great things and left notable legacies. Liu Bang is
one of these people. Liu Bang was born at the end of the Zhou dynasty on the East coast of China.
He lived during the Qin dynasty and founded the Han dynasty in 206 B.C.E. Liu Bang should be

He defeated a much more experienced military general to win the civil war, and founded the
legendary Han dynasty. He instated countless effective and efficient policies that increased the
longevity of the dynasty and contributed to its success. For example, he brought back a rural
economy, lowered taxes for peasants, encouraged trade, and established a feudal system, all of
which stimulated and improved the economy. He also expanded the empire and quashed
troublesome rebellions efficiently. He understood the need for educated men in government, so a
bureaucracy developed, and he was humane but not afraid to discipline. He moved the capital to
Chang'an, which developed into a thriving center of Asia, and he established the Silk Road, which

The Origins of Soccer
Evolution has acted as the forefront of the game of soccer due to the exponential growth it has
endured through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Contributions to this commercial epidemic
consist of the robust foundation in which a multitude of cultures have bestowed upon the game.
These cultures have formulated, in some manner, an invaluable rudimentary configuration of the
game. Despite the innumerable aspects of the game of soccer, one is present within all, healthy
competition. As time will tell, in accordance with the evolution of the game, physical exercise will
become an essential aspect of human life and growth, illustrating the importance and value of
athletics and recreation.
The origins of soccer can be traced back to a myriad of cultures. These cultures each contributed to
the construction and development of the game in their own unique way, therefore generating a
multi–cultural blending constitution. The forebear of these civilizations is the Han Dynasty of
China, the second great Chinese imperial dynasty ("Han Dynasty"), who founded the "Tsu' Chu"
("History of Football"). The epithet derives from the Chinese terms "tsu", to kick a ball with feet,
and "chu", a ball made of leather (Reilly). This variant consisted of a competition between two
teams who vigorously worked to get the leather ball through the opposing team's net. The nets used

15 years (221 to 206 B.C.E). Although Qin had such a transient period to power the country, it
played a fundamental role in Chinese history. In historians' view, they also consider Qin Dynasty
was the first dynasty to unify the country. Qin ended the Warring States period and gave people a
breaking period after a long term of wars. But being "the first unified, multi–national and power–
centralized state in the Chinese history" was not the only achievement that Qin had. The huge
impacts that Qin made on different aspects made Qin became the best influence dynasty in ancient
Chinese history.
During the warring state period, various countries had a great diversity of texts. Most of them look
similar but they still don't have a standardized written language. This brought out many
inconvenient. For example, a student in eastern China wanted to read a book from the western state
book, he might need a translator to help him. Li Si (Prime Minister of Qin) noticed the importance
of standardized written language and decided to create a written language that can be used in the
whole country. He was true, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

it took a long time and cost much money to finish these plans. In order to finish work, the

will start to complain about the society. The society became unrest. And then the overthrow of the
dynasty forces are brewing during that time. That was the reason why Qin dynasty only lasted only

The Causes Of Civilization : The Rise And Fall Of...
Every civilization that has, does, or exist, will or has fallen but why? About 12,000 years ago the
Neolithic Revolution began and people, starting in the Mesopotamia area, began to settle. This
sparked the beginning of a time where people lived in city–states and eventually empires. The
people worked together to learn the skills of farming and other job specialization causing many to
leave the Nomadic lifestyle, but even as many civilizations grew, they wouldn't and didn't last
forever and eventually, they all came to an end. Even when a civilization would fail, a start of a new
one rose up from the ashes adapting and creating their own place in history. From Neolithic to
civilizations rise and fall a lot had to happen, and many characteristics were essential to the cause of
the rise and fall. First, we have the change from nomadic, hunters and scavengers, life to
civilizations that grew from hundreds to thousands, and then to millions of people. This change took
thousands of years to happen with one of the first civilizations to be the Sumer, a city–state. During
this time people learned how to farm by domesticating crops, working together, and having people
have job specializations, helping thing become more productive. The Neolithic Revolution changed
the world forever people know relied on other people to contribute their job for the greater good of
everyone. The basic characteristics of civilizations are organized government, complex religions,

Tang Song And Song Dynasty Analysis
Speaking of ancient China and its enormous influence in East Asian history, the first dynasty that
comes into people's mind must be Tang dynasty. Tang is universally acknowledged as one of the
most powerful dynasties in Chinese history, attracting many vassal states to study the political
system and culture of Tang dynasty. Almost every main country in East Asian history has the slight
trace of Tang; and even today, Chinese often proudly call themselves "Tang people". Contrasting to
Tang, Song dynasty is not that memorable because of its lack of military strength and several
humiliating defeats. However, Song, in history, is a dynasty that raised Chinese civilization to a
higher level and even exceeded Tang dynasty. Song itself also provided a model for its neighboring
countries to imitate. Take Koryŏ for a perfect example. As the market economy, the technology, the
citizens' living standard and the education all came to a new climax during Song dynasty, China,
meanwhile, deeply influenced Koryŏ in these four aspects. To begin with, a strikingly market
economy was developed rapidly during Song dynasty, leading China into a period of unprecedented
economic prosperity. This is first reflected by a wide variety of market goods. As Patricia Ebrey
describes, "here we find pearl, jade, talismans, exotic plants and fruits, seasonal catches from the
sea, wild game–all the rarities of the world seem to be gathered here." (Ebrey, 178) The goods were

The Shang Dynasty: Second Administration Of China
Shang Dynasty
The Shang Dynasty (c.1600–1046 BCE) was the second administration of China which flourish the
Xia Dynasty (c. 2700–1600 BCE) after the oust of the Xia tyrant Jie by the Shang pioneer, Tang.
Since so many history specialists ask the question that Xia Dynasty truly existed, the Shang Dynasty
may have really been the first in china and the source of what must be perceived as Chinese Culture.
The dependability of the nation while the Shang Dynasty cause to so many social advances, for
example, the calendar, religious customs, and composing. The primary lord, Tang, immediately
started to work for the general population of his nation rather than for his own joy and gave a good
example to his successors. These men made a stable government which would proceed for a long
time however in the end, as indicated by the records of the Chinese students of history, they lost the
order of paradise which enabled them to run the show. (Mark and Mark, 2017)
The Shang China was originally focused in the North China Plain and connected as far north as
present Shandong and Hebei domains and westward through present–day Henan area. The leaders
of the Shang are acknowledged to have included a couple of capitals reliably, one of them possibly

How Did Confucius Influence The Han Dynasty
One of the greatest known dynasties in the history of the Chinese culture was the Han Dynasty. The
Han Dynasty's primary influences were the teachings of Confucius. The Confucian influences had
positive and negative impacts on the Chinese culture throughout the Han Dynasty and beyond. In
order to see how the principles and teachings of Confucius influenced the Han Dynasty, we must
first look at the history of Confucius. "Kong Fuzi, known in Latin as Confucius, a philosopher and
political adviser from the small state of Lu in modern Shandong, sought to reform China by
redefining Chinese political and ethical thought" (Spodek 208–209). Confucius dedicated his life to
education and philosophy, as he mastered the six Chinese arts: archery, ritual, calligraphy, music,
chariot driving, and arithmetic. He went on to be a teacher, government advisor, and author several
historical works. Confucius focused on the importance of self–discipline and earning rather than
power based on birthright. His teachings eventually grew to impact the region, although most of this
transformation took place after his death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

influence how the Chinese society operated, there was a strong emphasis placed on documenting

The Chaos and Division of Asia's History Essay
The assigned readings about Asian history lead a unified conclusion that the past (history) of Asia
was characterized with chaos and internal divisions. "China, once again entered an era of
divisiveness and chaos. Competing warlords dominated China for the next 350 years" (The Golden
Age of China: 79). China is a perfect symbol of Asia's history because if studied from the past, the
history of China demonstrates how divisions took place in the country's political and economic
spheres. China's history reveals how the religion led to emergence of chaos in the country. This
shows that religion, in the history of Asia, was more divisive than uniting when individual countries
considered their religions as different. Religious harmonization of ... Show more content on

Initially, Chinese had coexisted well under one rule. However, three powerful dynasties emerged
after the Han dynasty, forming three kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu. An element of democracy
started getting into China's politics, though at the time of the three dynasties, the kings had amassed
power through their naval strength. The fact that power was divided from one kingdom to three,
however, shows decentralization of influence, which is an element of democracy. The formation of
the three dynasties in China did not offer any practical solution to the chaotic situation in the
country. This disapproves the imagination that democracy was growing in the country. If it was
indeed democracy, then its growth had not ended. This is because after the formation of the three
dynasties, political division in China widened even further. No powerful dynasty in the continent's
history appeared to be answering the question of China's unity. It appeared like political plurality
had entered in China to stay. For example, the failure of the Jin Dynasty to solve the puzzle of
China's political unity shows how divisive China was becoming. Polarization of leadership was
more serious in Northern China. This judgment arises from the fact that the Jin dynasty did not
solve the puzzle of multiple kingdoms in the north of China. Sixteen kingdoms emerged in the north
as the Jin dynasty attempted to unite China.

that the earliest Chinese villages were developed around 7000 B.C.E., however, there have been no

contributed to the rise of the civilization, such as the Xia dynasty, which reigned from 2205 to 1766
B.C.E., although it was a semi–legendary dynasty because there was no solid proof of its existence.
Another dynasty was the Shang, which reigned from 1766 to 1122 B.C.E.; it was the first dynasty

This dynasty contributed to the rise of the civilization through the use of oracle bones, which were
one of the earliest examples of Chinese writing. Third was the Zhou dynasty, which reigned from
1100 to 256 B.C.E. after Wu, the monarch of the Xia, overthrew the Shang and founded the Zhou.
The Zhou was important to the growth of the society because it introduced more Chinese literature,

The Chinese Empire was large and controlled most of Asia at one point in time. One of the dynasties

was also important. He had discarded the belief that
Military life was inferior and developed a militant class. This class ranked higher than any civil

military. At the height of the Ming Dynasty were the Maritime Expansion, Agricultural Revolution
and the Commercial Revolution. Although the agricultural and commercial revolutions had impact
on the Chinese Empire, the Maritime expansion seemed to give China more power as "an empire".
The Maritime Expansion was under the third ruler Yung–lo (1403–1424). Yung–lo began to sponsor
Naval expansion between 1405 and continued under the leaders who followed him, Hung His
(1425) and Hsuan Le (1426–1435). There are many reasons for the Naval expansion but the Yung–
lo emperor expanded trade with other countries and imported exotic goods. Expedition went to East
Asia and Southeast to Asia, Southern India, Ceylon, the Persian Gulf and Africa. Trading from
Africa to Southeast Asia made China the world's greatest commercial Naval power in the world at
the time. A great accomplishment of the Ming Dynasty was the building of the Great Wall. Even

The Han period was one of the golden ages of Chinese civilization. The Han dynasty lasted from

It is known for being flourished with women rights. The Song dynasty's society definitely had its
differences to Tang, "For instance, the prime minister of the Song dynasty might take a bath in the

2003). This is quoted from a secondary source from a professor studying Chinese history and shows
how different the societies were between the two. Men were still greatly superior to women in this
period. In contrast with the Tang dynasty, women in this period despite it following the Tang
dynasty, were not allowed into positions of great importance like government officials or be

women of this period, unlike those of Tang, were had equal societal and legal rights that enabled
them to control their own dowry, able to establish small businesses and were equal to men when it

The History Of The Song Dynasty

  • 1. The History of the Song Dynasty For followers of the history of Western Civilization Marco Polo's visit to China was a major event. What most do not know or appreciate is the fact that such visit occurred in one of China's golden ages in a period known as the Song dynasty. The Song dynasty last for over three centuries from 960 to approximately 1279 and was characterized by a vibrant and prosperous economy which was accompanied by a rich cultural life. The prosperity enjoyed during the Song dynasty transcended various aspects of Chinese society. In agriculture techniques were developed that greatly improved the output of food products that was necessary due to the rapid increase in the nation's population. Division of labor practices were introduced that allowed the crafts business to not only introduce new products but also improved upon the quality of existing products. It was during the Song dynasty that the use of paper currency was also introduced which made trading across the various territories within China easier and more expedient. In the areas of science and technology, it was during the Song dynasty that several of the more well–known Chinese developments took place. Typography, the use of movable type, and the invention of the compass occurred during the late stages of the Song dynasty and were evidence of how advanced Chinese culture was during this period. The Chinese had already been using gunpowder in the production of fireworks before the Song dynasty began but during this period more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Dynasties From The Post-Classical Era, And Post Classical... Social structure is something that has been present all over history. There are many aspects used to define the social structure of a civilization, like race, ethnicity, class, gender, social mobility, and religion. One civilization in particular, China, has had the social structure of its reason evolve over time. Chinese dynasties from the Classical Era, the Post–Classical Era, and the Early Modern Period each established their own take on these categories. The dynasties from their respective time periods each differentiated themselves from the previous time period and allowed themselves to also have similarities between them. Chinese dynasties from the Classical Era and the Post–Classical Era are able to determine the factors of social structure that remain consistent and the factors that change throughout the time periods, which are class, gender, and social mobility. In the same way, the Ming and Qing dynasties of China from the Post–Classical Era compare to the Song and Tang dynasties from the Early Modern Period in China to define the consistencies of social structure through class, gender, and social mobility. One of the primary aspects of social structure in China was class. In the Classical Era, the Han and Qin dynasties ran China as a bureaucracy based on a person's importance to society. One of the main reasons status did not pertain to the amount of wealth a person had is that during this time, China was an agrarian based society, which meant that farmers did ... • 3. The Impact Of The Manchu Invasion Of China One might wonder what life was like in China 300 years ago? Or even think about the aspects of life just 100 years ago? Others ponder the history of China, and how the country came to be. The Manchus, and their invasion of China played an enormous role in all of these thoughts. The Manchu invasion of China during the 17th century, was an extremely significant event in Chinese history, that left important impacts on China. It also helped to influence culture for years to come. The Manchu people were a, "federation of various tribes living in what is today China's provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang"who belonged to the Tungus branch of the Atlantic people (Theobald, "The Manchus"). The Manchus replaced the Ming Dynasty in China after the decline of the Ming in 1644. The Ming Dynasty ruled China from 1368 until the dynasty commenced deterioration. By the beginning of the 1600s, the Ming began to lose power due to "threats from Barbarians on all sides, political in–fighting," rebellions, and poor loyalty in the military (Ryder). Likewise, the spread of violence in China contributed to the collapse of the Ming Dynasty (Zarrow). In the year 1644, the Chinese rebels overthrew the dynasty (Williams). At this time, the Ming emperor committed suicide as the rebel armies invaded Beijing (Zarrow). After the rebels overthrew the Ming, the Manchu people stepped in to try and gain power. The Manchus were able to establish clear power due to their strong "discipline, unity, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Cciv Prominent Painters and Painting from Song to Qing Dynasty Hee Dam Yoon (52775031) Song Dynasty The Song Dynasty was the golden age of landscape painting in Chinese history. Many artists developed landscape painting during Five Dynasties so, the development in the Song period was smoothly started. Especially emperor Song Huizong enjoyed contribution on art cultivation during the Song Dynasty, so, the soaring of Chinese landscape painting was possible (Hough, "Sung Dynasty (1960–1179)"). Features of this period are vision of nature and scholarly officials' participation in the art field. These officials expressed their political view and cultivated themselves through natural images (Department of Asian Art). Guo–Xi was one of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, he used Blue and Green coloring style from the Tang Dynasty. As a traditionalist, Zhao used Tang's feature in a revival meaning. Besides the simplified style, he successfully described beauty of this region by giving a sense of classical elegance and calmness (Autumn Colors on the Que and Hua Mountains). The impression that I got from this painting is beauty of the simplicity. Compare to previous and later Chinese landscape painting, Zhao's simple brushwork makes me to approach easily and appreciate the overall painting. Also, not just drawing the overall mountain included by numerous trees, I like how Zhao described each tree's feature like its leaves, brunches or color. Zhao painted the mountain with color blue instead of green and I think this is creative and beautiful at the same time. He had an innovative choice which makes him more special. The reason why this painting is so popular and unique is because of Zhao's innovation using calligraphy in landscape painting. The use of calligraphy is also shown well in other paintings by Zhao. We can see several written calligraphy around mountains and trees. For example, Four Anecdotes from the Life of Wang Xizhi is a great example of Zhao's devotion on Calligraphy in Chinese art History. • 5. Great Dynasty As A Powerful Economic And Imperialistic... Josh Turner Professor Mayes History 110 4/9/2015 Great dynasties in Imperialistic China Ancient China was always able to flourish as a powerful economic and imperialistic country. Behind this great amount of early success were great dynasties that played great roles in China's history. China has always been highly influenced by its great ancient dynasties. These dynasties were able to establish monetary systems, road and canal systems for trade, and also build great elaborate historic structures that still stand today. They also influenced different philosophies such as Taoism and Confucianism. In the long history of China, many great dynasties appear that have helped a lot to the development of the whole country. Among them, there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also built a tomb for the emperor containing giant detailed sculptures of each one of his soldiers called the Terracotta Army. Even though this dynasty only lasted 15 years, the Qin's hold an important part in Chinese history and it shows great influence on the later dynasties. The Han dynasty was another highly successful dynasty in Chinese history it covered over four centuries from 206 BC–220 AD and it is known as the "Golden Age" in Chinese history. They were considered this for many reasons; they had the city of Chang'an which was one of the two largest cities in the ancient world at this time. The dynasty had a large growth in population and urbanization which allowed for an increase of industry and trade which developed on the Silk Road routes. This ultimately led to an increase in economic growth. This empire had Liu Bang ruling as the first emperor but under him they had a bureaucracy so they also implemented a civil service exam to ensure the best people fit for the job were working in the government and under the emperor. The Han dynasty's government system was in some way implemented throughout the imperial history of China. The Hans also improved iron amour and swords by making them stronger and more flexible. • 6. The Dynasty Of Chinese History Essay The Six Dynasty period in Chinese historiography is often classified with moments of conflict, revolt, strife, famine, disunity, and not innovation. Historians and academics categorize the period as a placeholder between the more significant Han China–206 BCE to 220 CE–and the Tang dynasty– 618 to 907 CE. Understandably, Han China's military, infrastructure, and civil capabilities were rivalled only by that of the Roman Empire, and even then, the Han dynasties administrative capabilities were rivalled by none. The Tang period is widely considered to be the high point of Chinese culture and civilization, where cosmopolitan China emerged with force vastly shaping China for centuries to come. The significance of the Han and Tang dynasties is not in question, it is the lack of importance that historians confer on the Six Dynasties period. Admittedly the Six Dynasty period in Chinese history can be categorized as a warring period, in which China did not develop unilaterally, but separately along fractured lines (split both north–south, and east–west). Much like the European medieval period, there are few accessible sources from early–medieval china, and because of this, China's six dynasty period is brushed over as a period of little advancement and innovation. The "Dark Ages" in Europe use to receive the same scholarly interpretation as a period of stagnation. Agreeably a topic of righting historical wrongs is too large for too few pages, as such, the scope of this paper is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Ancient China 's Trade And Economy Ancient China 's Trade and Economy From as early as 2100 BCE to as late as 1912 CE, China lived and prospered in the period of the dynasties (Timeline of Chinese History and Dynasties). The dynastic period included successions of rulers who usually descended from the same family. After the ruler passed away, their successor took their preceder 's sole–reigning position of emperor. The Xia Dynasty started the period of the dynasties in 2100 BCE. (Timeline of Chinese History and Dynasties). The Qing Dynasty marked the end of the dynastic period in 1912 CE (Timeline of Chinese History and Dynasties). In between the first and last dynasties, China experienced a time of economic, social, environmental, and religious growth that affected all of the people of China. Traders and merchants that traveled the Chinese trading systems tremendously contributed to the amplification of trade of goods, skills, ideas, customs, and messages. Humans, most often slaves, built roads and canals such as the Silk Road and the Grand Canal across and through mountains, deserts, and rivers to facilitate ways to connect with China 's other surrounding countries. During the dynastic period, China developed a strong and diverse economy and culture through their unique and innovative trading routes, the Silk Road and the Grand Canal. • 8. China: Then and Now Essay The Chinese dynastic system was highly admired for its vast structural integrity which allowed it to persevere for more than two millennia. The Xia Dynasty was the first recorded dynasty in Chinese history, founded by a man named Shun who renounced his throne to his trusted official Yu. Rather than pass the power to someone qualified for the position, Yu then entrusted the Dynasty to his son Qi, setting the precedence for the Dynastic rule. 1 This ushered in the Hereditary System which was followed by many dynasties to come. Under the hereditary system the power was passed down through the family members. This system also had an added benefit of ensuring stability and continuity within the nation's infrastructure.2 However in the later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the rulers began to do poorly, Heaven was believed to show their depreciation with natural disasters. Upon the observation of these signs, the nobles would overthrow the current Dynasty which would be followed by another that was believed to have obtained the lost Mandate from the previous tyrannical rulers. 6 The cycle of rulers followed this trend, summarizing the succession of dynasties in early China. In essence, the belief in the Mandate of Heaven empowered the success of the dynastic system, instilling stability of infrastructure where stability was lost through riots and the inability of the rulers.7 This stability among the Chinese people even allowed the successful control of China under alien peoples.8 The Mongols, an ethnic group north of China, successfully ruled the Chinese for many years by conquering their dynasties with brute force. The first major Mongolian dynasty was referred to as the Yuan Dynasty, prevalent from 1264 to 1368.9 However, Mongolian rule over the Chinese citizens was not maintained through the same aggressiveness they used to first conquer them. The Mongols understood that in order to have control within an alien country, they must adopt some of the established customs. They not only accepted and incorporated Chinese customs ... Many civilizations made accomplishments in farming but the Tang's accomplishments were very important. One of the biggest advancements in farming was the three field system. The three field system was a system in the Tang dynasty where everyone gets enough arable land to farm and produce food for themselves. This was important because it allowed every family to have a food and it prevented the very wealthy people from buying up all of the land. In other dynasties and empires, rich people buying all of the land was a major problem. The Tang wanted to avoid this because they knew the outcome of having a rich people controlling all of the farming land. The middle class and poor people wouldn't be able to live and the economy would be very bad. This system gave people land according to their needs. For example, older people and widows got less land than a man with a family. (Theobald, 2015) Every adult male was allowed eighty mu, which was a measurement of land, old and sick people were allowed forty mu, widows received thirty mu, and lower class merchants and craftsmen got ten mu. This system benefited the economy because since everyone had enough food, they could specialize in their own crafts like blacksmithing and art. Another benefit from the food surplus that this system brought is that the government found a new strain of rice that grew much quicker and was less work to grow. This gave the Tang an ... However, three powerful dynasties emerged after the Han dynasty, forming three kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu. An element of democracy started getting into China's politics, though at the time of the three dynasties, the kings had amassed power through their naval strength. The fact that power was divided from one kingdom to three, however, shows decentralization of influence, which is an element of democracy. The formation of the three dynasties in China did not offer any practical solution to the chaotic situation in the country. This disapproves the imagination that democracy was growing in the country. If it was indeed democracy, then its growth had not ended. This is because after the formation of the three dynasties, political division in China widened even further. No powerful dynasty in the continent's history appeared to be answering the question of China's unity. It appeared like political plurality had entered in China to stay. For example, the failure of the Jin Dynasty to solve the puzzle of China's political unity shows how divisive China was becoming. Polarization of leadership was more serious in Northern China. This judgment arises from the fact that the Jin dynasty did not solve the puzzle of multiple kingdoms in the north of China. The Song dynasty's society definitely had its differences to Tang, "For instance, the prime minister of the Song dynasty might take a bath in the same public bath house as everyone else, which would be unthinkable in the Tang Dynasty", (Wang, 2003).
