Over the last three decades, the opensource movement has been pushing to open every piece of closed-source software.
Linux & BSDs successfully proved that opensource can provide state-of-the-art operating systems: Internet, clouds or large infrastructures couldn't work without OSS.
Having control over the operating system doesn't mean servers and the infrastructure are totally open, OSS won a battle but not the war.
Criteo will present its vision to break the last barriers and open the last bits of proprietary software running in modern infrastructure and the challenges that go with it.
The second class in CIS222, Introduction to UNIX/Linux.
Prepares for Virtualbox installation, and brief overview of default Linux installation.
Overview of main points of BIOS, Virtualization.
Virtualization with KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine)Novell
As a technical preview, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 contains KVM, which is the next-generation virtualization software delivered with the Linux kernel. In this technical session we will demonstrate how to set up SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 for KVM, install some virtual machines and deal with different storage and networking setups.
To demonstrate live migration we will also show a distributed replicated block device (DRBD) setup and a setup based on iSCSI and OCFS2, which are included in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 High Availability Extension.
Hypervisors are becoming more and more widespread in embedded environments, from automotive to medical and avionics. Their use case is different from traditional server and desktop virtualization, and so are their requirements. This talk will explain why hypervisors are used in embedded, and the unique challenges posed by these environments to virtualization technologies.
Xen, a popular open source hypervisor, was born to virtualize x86 Linux systems for the data center. It is now the leading open source hypervisor for ARM embedded platforms. The presentation will show how the ARM port of Xen differs from its x86 counterpart. It will go through the fundamental design decisions that made Xen a good choice for ARM embedded virtualization. The talk will explain the implementation of key features such as device assignment and interrupt virtualization.

Multiple Device Emulators for HVM Guests, Paul Durrant, CitrixThe Linux Foundation
Currently Xen only allows a single device emulator to be attached to each HVM guest in a system and, to date, this has been QEMU generally running as a process in the same domain as the toolstack, or in a stub domain.
To enable the deployment of virtual GPUs to HVM guests in XenServer, patches were created to allow multiple device emulators to be attached to each HVM guest. QEMU continues to be used to emulate the majority of the devices, but a second process is spawned to handle the virtual GPU. This opens up the possibility of the GPU vendors supplying 'appliance' driver domains in future.
I'd like to give an overview of the changes that we've made to Xen and QEMU to enable the use of multiple emulators, the potential benefits to driver domains, plus the knock on effect of emulator disaggregation on the 'unplug' protocol and what we could do about this.
Hypervisors and Virtualization - VMware, Hyper-V, XenServer, and KVMvwchu
With co-presenter Maninder Singh, delivered a presentation about hypervisors and virtualization technology for an independent topic study project for the Operating System Design (EECS 4221) course at York University, Canada in October 2014.
Virtualization, briefly, is the separation of resources or requests for a service from the underlying physical delivery of that service. It is a concept in which access to a single underlying piece of hardware is coordinated so that multiple guest operating systems can share a single piece of hardware, with no guest operating system being aware that it is actually sharing anything at all.
Paul Durant, leader of the Windows PV Drivers effort in Xen Project, discusses the history, architecture, interfaces, and use of the drivers. Using the Windows PV Drivers yield higher performance for Windows VMs.

Mastering kvm virtualization- A complete guide of KVM virtualizationHumble Chirammal
Mastering KVM virtualization is a complete guide to understand KVM virtualization. Mastering KVM Virtualization is a culmination of all the knowledge we gained by
troubleshooting, configuring and fixing bug on KVM virtualization. We
authored this book for system administrators, DevOps practitioners and developers who have
a good hands-on knowledge of Linux and would like to sharpen their skills of open
source virtualization. The chapters in this book are written with a focus on practical
examples that should help you deploy a robust virtualization environment, suiting
your organization's needs. Our expectation is that, once you have finished the book,
you should have a good understanding of KVM virtualization, its tools to build
and manage diverse virtualization environments.
XPDDS19: Implementing AMD MxGPU - Jonathan Farrell, Assured Information SecurityThe Linux Foundation
The use of Virtual GPUs (vGPUs) has widely grown in server farms to give Virtual Machines (VMs) dedicated graphics. Software rendering with virtual CPUs can only take us so far and even with Intel-GVT, which uses integrated graphics, there isn't enough power to do the fun stuff. In this presentation, Jon Farrell will be talking about the process of implementing AMD MxGPU on Xen, challenges that he encountered while doing it, and discussing performance metrics of bare metal and vGPU VM on popular benchmarks like 3D Mark* and The Witcher 3. To wrap up his presentation, Jon will share his thoughts about future research and where this technology can take us.
The XenServer virtualization platform is used by well over 100,000 organizations to fulfill their IT objectives. Common scenarios include traditional server virtualization such as that found with VMware vSphere, delivery of large scale cloud services via Apache CloudStack or OpenStack, and as a platform for high performance desktop virtualization through XenDesktop. These use cases all have requirements of scale and manageability which imply solid deployments.
The content in this deck was presented in workshop form at FOSSETCON in 2015. Much of the information contained will work for any XenServer version, but XenServer 6.5 was covered. The audience was assumed to have some familiarity with virtualization concepts, but no assumptions about XenServer was made. Core concepts covered included; storage design, network design and operations, scalability and failure domains, as well as core features such as virtualized graphics.
This session was presented at Reboot IT conference in Bangalore, India. This session intends to introduce the Hyper-V Replica feature and the related technologies such as Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager.

Evaluate a Considered Case for Microsoft Virtualization
With Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Microsoft has caught up to industry leading VMware across many server virtualization features and functions. That, plus a perception of lower costs (Hyper-V is free) is leading many to consider a move to Hyper-V for virtualization and hybrid cloud. Now is the time to evaluate the potential of Hyper-V. It may or may not be right for your requirements, but you will need to have a clear and considered case for or against Hyper-V. As virtualization has become mainstream this is not the time for either blissful ignorance or knee jerk decisions.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
