Project Honolulu is Microsoft's web-based server management console. It provides a lightweight alternative to Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for managing servers through a web interface. While it has some nice features for Hyper-V management and replaces the need to RDP, it does not function as a central management tool and cannot manage Active Directory or replace all Remote Server Administration Tools. It also requires an update to be installed on devices to manage them and does not support managing servers running Windows Server 2008.

Modernization of IBM Notes applications is a topic that is on the map for many IBM customers. With one of my customers, a Norwegian manufacturing company, we started a project last year to modernize a business critical Notes application. We decided early on to keep using Domino in the backend, but switch to AngularJS for the frontend. In the session I'll talk about how we approached the project and got to a working prototype. Topics I will cover include responsibilities, development workflow, technical setup and issues we ran into. I'll explain the architecture that we are using, the components involved and how we integrated with IBM Connections and Infor. 12 Factor App Methodology
The 12 Factor App methodology provides guidelines for building software-as-a-service applications in the cloud. It advocates for codebases that are tracked in revision control, explicit declaration of dependencies, separation of configuration from code, treating backing services as attached resources, and strict separation between build, release, and run stages. The methodology also includes guidelines for processes, port binding, concurrency, disposability, keeping development and production environments similar, and treating logs as event streams. Following the 12 factors can help applications maximize portability, be more robust and agile, and scale smoothly by avoiding reliance on implicit tools or behaviors.

This is a brief overview of Streams and a deep dive into newer features that can help you with parallel and component based development.
VMware and Container Orchestration
1. Containers provide process isolation and reproducible environments for applications at scale. Container orchestration helps manage the lifecycle of containers across hosts.
2. OpenStack provides infrastructure automation for container hosts. Using containers with OpenStack allows developers to quickly deploy applications while operations can manage compliance, auditing, and networking.
3. Container orchestration systems like Kubernetes deployed with OpenStack solutions like VMware Integrated OpenStack simplify container management by providing visibility, health checks, affinity/anti-affinity, and lifecycle management of containers.
MySQL HA Presentation
The document summarizes MySQL high availability (HA) solutions used by bwin games AB. It discusses HA concepts and components, requirements for bwin's database platform, solutions considered including MySQL replication and clustering, and the obstacles with each. Bwin ultimately chose Linux HA due to its free cost and minimal required application changes. The implementation uses shared storage with DRBD and heartbeat across bonded network interfaces. While the solution provides HA, long recovery times still cause interruptions. Faster recovery and multi-master replication are recommended for true high availability.

Modernization of IBM Notes applications is a topic that is on the map for many IBM customers. With one of my customers, a Norwegian manufacturing company, we started a project last year to modernize a business critical Notes application. We decided early on to keep using Domino in the backend, but switch to AngularJS for the frontend. In the session I'll talk about how we approached the project and got to a working prototype. Topics I will cover include responsibilities, development workflow, technical setup and issues we ran into. I'll explain the architecture that we are using, the components involved and how we integrated with IBM Connections and Infor. 12 Factor App Methodology
The 12 Factor App methodology provides guidelines for building software-as-a-service applications in the cloud. It advocates for codebases that are tracked in revision control, explicit declaration of dependencies, separation of configuration from code, treating backing services as attached resources, and strict separation between build, release, and run stages. Practical management of development & QA environments for SharePoint 2013

In this session we will share how we maintain our environments for development, quality assurance and demonstration purposes. We've put in a lot of thought into optimising what we do and to deliver a highly-available, performing experience to our delivery teams.
For our work we have over 90 farms, so the challenges in maintaining them are not insignificant. Due to advances in the SharePoint platform we believe it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain SharePoint environments for every project, client or product. We have a strong requirement to be flexible and efficient on hardware and at the same time be able to spawn development environments on demand. Automation here with SCVMM is key to a sustainable work front.
We will discuss our goals as a consultancy company, how we deal with licenses, whether we prefer centralised or decentralised team environments, how to automate VM's with Service Center Virtual Machine Manager, how to deal with Microsoft SQL and Active Directory, DNS and IP addresses, what we do to make the developer's time as productive as possible and a whole set of other tips and tricks we put in place. We will also share our Apps development and Office 365 development landscapes.
Overall, this session is infrastructure focused, but will be valuable and practical both for administrators and developers, it will cover experiences for both sides of the spectrum.
Windows sever 2008

There are a couple of options available when upgrading from Server 2008 (R2) to Server 2012. The first and easiest option is a clean install. In this option, data must first be backed up as this will delete the previous OS and install the new version. The second option is a standard upgrade. This option preserves all the server roles currently in place as well as the hardware being used. (Microsoft, n.d).
Some limitations to consider when upgrading are as follows:
-Windows Server 2012 only supports 64-bit hardware
-Upgrade from one language to another is not supported
-Upgrading to certain editions are dependent on the previous OS you are running.
-Some roles that are previously installed may not work properly and may need additional upgrades.
I would recommend a clean install to avoid any issues that may develop during or after an in-place upgrade. I think that it would be more difficult to troubleshoot a standard upgrade failure than a clean install. Clean install may also alleviate the issues of previous application not working properly and may solve any current issues the server maybe experiencing.

Server Core is good for a very large enterprise environment. In this kind of environment, where hundreds of servers are employed, it is not ideal for the administrator to go to the individual server and manage them locally. Most of these configurations would be run through scripts and remote administrator tools, therefore, server core should be utilized.
Some roles that I would install are active directory which handles network management of users data and security. Another would be Hyper-V which consolidates multiple servers into one single system. Other roles that could be used with server core includes DNS, DHCP, File Services, Print Services, Streaming Media Services, Web Server. (Microsoft, n.d).
There are several advantages of using Server Core. One advantage would be security. Since server core has less services running on it, there are fewer possible of malicious attacks. It has greater stability since it requires less processes and services fewer things can go wrong. It also has a smaller footprint and requires fewer resources such as RAM as compared to using a full GUI. The disadvantages of Server Core is it has a steep learning curve and is limited to nine server roles

When migrating from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012, the system requirements remain unchanged. - 2. What is it? The good The web version of the awesome server manager. Some very nice Hyper-V touches. Very lightweight, designed to be installed onto a win10 workstation. Replaces the need to RDP to servers. The bad Doesn’t work as a central management tool. It cannot manage AD at all. It requires an update to be installed on devices you want to manage. - 5. It doesn’t use IIS The installer is quite lightweight and it’s all self contained. Not sure what that means for patching though. It uses HTTPS by default but it’s hard/impossible to change the cert? No easy way to add things like HSTS. More testing required and it is still early days! Gary Williams | www.gdwnet.com | @garyw_
- 6. Windows management framework 5.1 To manage a computer requires the management framework to be installed (KB3191566). This is available for Windows 7, 8, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2. It’s built in to Windows 2016. Anything older? It’s not supported. Honolulu itself doesn’t support 2008 so probably not Windows 7 either Gary Williams | www.gdwnet.com | @garyw_
- 7. LAPS Local Administrator Password Solution. Generates random passwords and uses a GPO to set them onto the local admin account. Setup is all via powershell. Honolulu needs to be granted rights to each and every device it manages, it can be delegated to an OU – This is easily the most painful part of LAPS. Password changes occur on a GPO Refresh so could be a few hours behind the time that’s been set for the change to occur. The admpwd.dll file needs to be installed on every device that needs to generate a random password. Passwords are stored in plain text in AD but only designated users can see them. Requires a Windows 2012 Domain controller – just for the powershell parts. Doesn’t seem to work with the default computers CN object. Gary Williams | www.gdwnet.com | @garyw_
- 8. What does it give us? Almost everything that you get from server manager in windows 2012 R2. A HTML5 console. A much better view of Hyper-V VM’s. Live metrics – 2016 only. Access to various services such as the firewall, registry, etc. Gary Williams | www.gdwnet.com | @garyw_

- The intro story “I’ve always liked to have some sort of central management for servers, and while Honolulu isn’t quite that central management for windows, it’s not bad………..’
- With server manager you can do quite a lot of management on different servers but it gets messy
- Adding a cert is a pain as it has to be done at install time, the install is pretty straight forward, almost container based.
