About the
Novel
 Love story of
two sisters.
 Dashwood
family live in
Norland park.
 Both sisters
suffers a lot.
Theme of ‘sence
and sensibility’
Money.
Because of patriarchal
society system
Dashwood women's
suffers a lots . In the
novel we saw that
after death of Mr.
Dashwood gave his
property to his son
not to Dashwood
woman's and because
of less of money Mrs.
Dashwood wants
marriage of her
daughters with
wealthy and rich
person.
Marriage
•For Elinor and
Marianne were
not a choice but
it is a necessity
because for a
women to marry
a person who is
rich . It is
necessity to
financial
condition to
secure the
future.
Continue
So, for women who
have money, marriage
is necessary to secure
their social positions
and sure about
financial stability for
the future.
Young men are more
free to chose a life
partner for marriage ,
eg , Mr colonel
Brandon reach at the
age of 35 still
unmarried.
Love-stories
•We can see the
novel is full of love
story . There are six
love story.
•Two love story
both the sisters
love story is very
important in the
novel.
•Other love stories
are correlated to
the novel.
Society and
class
•Three families
•Wealthy
families
•Arrange
parties
•Relationship
related to
women.
Continue
•Various places are
mention in the
novel most of the
country side places
shown in the novel
. Like we saw
Norland part,
Barton part London
city in the novel .
The time is about
1800-1810.
Sense and
Sensibility.
•Sense means
common
understanding .
•We use it day to day
our life.
•We saw this ability of
Elinor very well. When
she knows Edward
was already engaged
with Lucy that time
she control herself
and not lose self
confidedence . It is
very nice. So Elinor
represent the theme
of sence.
Sensibility.
•Sensibility means
emotional attitude.
•Marianne uses
feeling instead of
mind.
•When a person is
too emotional at
that time she could
not take right
decision . Marianne
did the same
mistakes to which
she had to pay.
Self Sacrifices
•Elinor especially is a model of self-sacrifices. We
saw through out the novel we saw passing
through the pain and failure of love she control
her pain, emotion, and feeling . so she was
strong character. She handle the situation so
how she protect her and her family is imported
than her own life.
Selfishness
When a person is too emotional at that
time she could not take right decision.
Marianne did the same mistakes to which
she had to pay. Marianne was too
emotional and she thinks about her own
life not thinks of her family and put herself
in terrible situation so we can see her
selfishness.
Expectations
v/s Reality
This is an especially
important theme
with regard to
Marianne and her
mother, whose
romantic characters
lead them to expect
greater drama than
actually appears.
“To wish was to
hope, and to hope
was to expect”
Continue
When Marianne
wants to marry with
Willoughby but he
broke her heart he
left her and she
suffers a lot . In
other side Elinore
wants to marry with
Edward but she
knew that he was
already engaged
with Lucy . So this
high expectations of
both sisters make
them turning face to
reality.
