3. Introduction author
● This is Jane Austen's first book, before Pride and Prejudice.
● "Sense" refers to wisdom and judgement, and Elinor is
described as a sensible character in this novel. "Sensibility" is
described as sensitivity and emotion, and Marianne is the
sensitive one.
● The book was published anonymously.
● The focus of this book, like many of her books, is on the
upper-middle class and their obsession with maintaining
their status.
4. ● This novel established what would
become Austen's famous literary style.
● She had a special focus on characters
and their personalities symbols and
other literary devices came second to
the people she was creating.
● Her style is known for being sharp,
witty, and subtle. It seems as if she
often pokes fun at her own characters.
● This novel also showcases her use of
irony. Characters often say one thing
when they mean another.
5. ● Mr. Henry Dashwood dies, leaving
all his money to his son from his
first wife, John.
● His second wife and her three
daughters are left homeless and with
little income.
● They move to stay with distance
relatives, the Middletons.
6. ● The girls discover many new acquaintances, like Colonel
Brandon and John Willoughby.
● Willoughby began courting Marianne, but leaves suddenly
for business in London.
● Anne and Lucy Steele, two relatives of Lady Middleton,
arrive as guests.
● Lucy befriends Elinor, and informs her that she has been
engaged to Mr. Ferrars for a year. Mr. Ferrars is John's
brother-in-law, and a close friend of Elinor's. This saddens
her..
● Elinor and Marianne travel to London.
7. ● Colonel Brandon tells them that everyone is talking about an
engagement between Marianne and Willoughby, though he has
not proposed.
● She sees Willoughby at a party, but he cruelly rebuffs her and
tells her he has never had feelings for her.
● Colonel Brandon tells Elinor about Willoughby's history, and
says that he has run out of money and is marrying the wealthy
Miss Grey.
● Lucy's older sister accidentally reveals Lucy and Ferrars's
engagement. His mother is angry.
● Marianne falls deathly ill. Willoughby hears of her illness and
rushes to see her, begging her forgiveness.
8. ● Marianne says she could have never been happy with him.
● She begins to recover.
● Lucy decides to marry Ferrars brother in the end, and
Ferrars proposes to Elinor.
● Marianne and Colonel Brandon become engaged.
9. Characters of Dashhood sisters
● Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret.
● Marianne is the most sensible one, who falls for
Willoughby but ultimately marries Colonel Brandon.
● Elinor, the oldest, supports her sister while yearning for
Ferrars.
● Margaret is the youngest, but has her sisters' romantic
tendencies.
10. Edward and Robert Ferrars
● Edward is the older brother, who is stuck in a secret
engagement with Lucy, but ends up marrying Elinor.
● Robert inherits the family money after Edward is
disinherited, and eventually marries Lucy.
11. Colonel Bradon
● Colonel Brandon earns the description "an officer and a
gentleman."
● In his mid-thirties, he has seen enough of the world to be alert
to manipulation, scandal, and lies, yet he is also a good judge of
character and knows worthy traits when he sees them.
● Because he is capable and compassionate Colonel Brandon wins
Elinor's admiration, Edward's friendship, and Marianne's love as
he works behind the scenes to undo the damage more selfish
characters cause.
● An honorable and respectful man, who falls in love with
Marianne.
