• Introduction of the novel
• Sense and sensibility is a novel
written by Jane Austen.
• Published in 1811.
• Divided into three volume.
• It tells a story of Dashwood
family.
• Elinor and Marianne are main
characters of the novel.
• The novel based on Marianne
and Elinor Dashwood.
• Main theme in this novel is the
danger of excessive sensibility.
• About the Author
• She was born on 16
December 1775.
• She was an English novelist
• Known primary for her six
major novels.
• Her novels:-
1. Sense and sensibility
2. Pride and prejudice
3. Mansfield park
4. Emma
5. Northanger Abbey
6. persuasion
• Themes of Sense and Sensibility
• Love and Marriage
• Money and inheritance
• Self-sacrifice and
selfishness
• Moderation
• Jealousy
• Appearance vs. reality
• Main theme of the novel
• Sense/Sensibility
• In those novel Jane Austen drawn to on the
cusp between two culture movements:
classicism or Romanticism.
• The distinction is most clearly symbolized by
the psychological between the novel’s two
chief characters, Elinor and Marianne
Dashwood.
• sense • sensibility
• The middle sister and
too emotional
• The elder sister of
dashwood family
Deals with common
understanding
Deals with emotional
and attitude
• Love and Marriage
• Elinor falls in love with Edward.
• Edward has true with Elinor because of
that he marries with Elinor through he
dissertates from will. That’s why call
marriage for love.
• Love story between Marianne and
Willoughby, all think that both will marry
but after some time Willoughby runs
away to London and never comes back,
later news comes that he married with
Sophia.
• In the end of the novel Marianne got
married with colonel.
• Money and Inheritance
• Willoughby’s first love is Marianne but for
him money is more important than love.
• He married with Sophia because of
Money.
• Marianne also marries with colonel
Brandon for social status.
• Low surrounding inheritance are what
put the dashwood women in limbo at the
beginning of the novel and their lack of
money, compounded with their inability
to work, means that they cannot ease
their situation, except through marrying
well.
• Self-sacrifice and selfishness
• Elinor especially is a model of self-
sacrifice, at first she left Edward
for the sake of her mother and
sisters and started living at Barton
park.
• While, Marianne is a model of
selfishness, caring only for herself
and her feeling, she needs Elinor’s
help and goodwill to get by, but
needs to learn how to be giving
towards others in order to become
her own, independence person.
• Moderation
• Marianne must learn
moderation of her emotion
if she is to become
independent of Elinor and
become an adult; her
trials serve to teach her
about her excesses, and
luckily, she does come to
improve herself and
become a much better,
more caring person
toward others.
• Jealousy
• Relates mostly to Lucy Steele, and is the prime
determinant of her behavior toward Elinor.
• Willoughby also becomes jealous of colonel
marrying Marianne, and other, petty jealousies
become evident in character.
• Indicates insecurity, or poor character.
• Appearance vs. Reality
• Pertains to character especially, as many character in the novel present
themselves as one thing, and ends up being another.
• John Willoughby is the best example of this, as he seems romantic,
open and genuine but ends up exposing himself as vain, idle and cruel.
• Also pertain to Lucy steel, who ends up conniving despite her innocent
appearance.
• At first she engaged with Edward and then she come to known that
Robert is the inherent of property.
• She engaged with Robert and left Edward.
• conclusion
• The theme of the novel is very simple. The
theme of sensibility is illustrated in the love
affairs between Marianne and Willoughby and
the theme of sense begins with the relationship
of Elinor and Edward. the character of Marianne
is too emotional in matter of love. And her this
attitude let her to tragic end of her love story.
The novel illustrate love, jealousy, money,
selfishness, social life and peoples behavior.
Thank you…
