- This started in the early 1400s and was led mainly by the
nations of Europe.
3. Leaders for Exploration
- Some nations like Spain and Portugal promoted
exploration.
- Spain’s exploration was led by Ferdinand and Isabella.
- Portugal was led by Prince Henry, also known as “The
Navigator.”
4. Great Land Masses Explored
- Explorers were looking for entirely “new” continents.
- A Continent = one of the main land masses on the globe.
- Examples include: North America, South America, and Africa.
5. Locations
- Some tools used by sailors helped them to navigate the
globe.
- Tools like the astrolabe made this possible.
- The Astrolabe used the location of stars and planets to determine
Latitude
- Latitude = Imaginary lines around the Earth that run East to West.
6. Directions
- Finding your way at sea could often be difficult.
- Ship Captains used a Compass to help them figure out if
they were heading North, South, East, or West.
- This was very important for sea exploration.
