6. Setting Sail
August 1492- sailed with 90 men and 3 ships, the Nina,
the Pinta, and the Santa Maria
Covered about 170 miles a day
Predicted he would reach Asia in 21 days
October 12- made landfall and claimed land for Spain
Named the islanders Indians
Sailed southwest to a large island he thought was Japan
Cuba
Then sailed to Hispaniola
Set sail for return to Spain in January 1493

7. Spain Backs More Voyages
September 1493- 17 ships and 1,500 soldiers, settlers, and priests
Planned to colonize the West Indies and convert people to
Christianity
Columbus discovered other islands such as Puerto Rico
Men he left behind on Hispaniola were killed by natives
Enslaved natives to dig for gold
Sent 12 ships back to Spain with gold, trinkets and captives
1498- Reached northern coast of South America
Thought it was the Asian mainland
1502- returned to try and prove the land he found was Asia
Died in 1506 convinced the land he found was Asia

8. Amerigo Vespucci- Italian explorer
Was convinced that lands were NOT Asia
More densely populated and full of animals
German mapmaker labeled area “the land of Amerigo”
on maps, later shortened to America
1510- Vasco Nunez de Balboa- Spanish explorer
Explored the Caribbean coast of Panama
Became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean

9. September 1519- Ferdinand Magellan- Portuguese
Looking for an Atlantic-Pacific passage
Moved down the South American coast looking for a strait
Encountered new animals never seen before (penguins)
Found a passage near the tip of Argentina (Strait of Magellan)
Battled winds, tides and currents for 38 days to reach Pacific Ocean
Reached Philippine Islands where he and some others were
killed
September 1522- one of his ships returned to Spain
Three years after the trip began, 18 men became the first to
circumnavigate the Earth
