7. Ferdinand Magellan 1480-1521
A Portuguese explorer and navigator.
Magellan was sponsored to travel wes
t across the Atlantic in search for
the East Indies. Sponsored by Spain
to search for gems and where spices
grew he sailed west ward across the
Atlantic ocean

In 1519 he left Spain with five ships
and about 260 men. On September
20, 1519, sailing from west Africa
and then to brazil. Hoping to find the
route to the Spice Island he
continued searching.

tion he found a passage through the S
outh America which was later called as
“The Strait of Magellan”. Leaving thre
e ships with him. The sailing set for 38
days he finally able to pass the treach

Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic.
11. Ferdinand Magellan 1480-1521
On March 6, 1521, The sail landed at the I
sland of Guam. After ten days, they drop a
nchor at the Island of Cebu— only 400 mil
es away from the Spice Island. Meeting wi
th the chief of Cebu, being converted into
Christianity he has been asked to help him
conquer the neighbouring island of Mactan.
On a fight with the islanders, Magellan wa
s hit by a poisoned arrow leaving him to de
ath on April 27, 1521. On 1522, with all the
men sailed only 18 returned to Spain with t
he remaining ship— Victoria.
13. Juan Sebastian De Elcano 1476-1526
A Spanish navigator who hand in hand with
Ferdinand Magellan expedition
(Magellan- Elcano). He has born in Basque
town of Guetaria and died on scurvy in the
Pacific Ocean. Where in 1519 joined the expe
dition being organized by Portuguese explore
r Ferdinand Magellan. Equipped with five ship
s, the main goal is to travel for search of the
Spice Island located in Indonesia. With so
much hardship and bad luck traveling along
the Pacific Ocean to cross the route.

After Magellan was killed on a war i
n Mactan Cebu, Philippines. Elcano t
ook over command of the last remai
ning ship, The Victoria. Escaping loa
ded with spice, after almost three y
ears of traveling, the ship reached
Sanlucar De Barrameda. On Septem
ber 6 1522, arriving with spice and
with the expeditions original numbe
r of 260 had been reduce to weak a
nd famished 18 men.

16. ENRIQUE OF MALACCA
Was a Malay member of Magellan-
Elcano expedition that first
person to completed the
circumnavigation of the world. He
was acquired as a slave by the
Portuguese explorer Ferdinand
Magellan in 1511 at the age of 14
years probably in the early stage
of the siege of Malacca Magellan
later took him to Europe where he
accompanied the circumnavigation
expedition in 1519.

Pigafetta was one of his 18 men who
returned to Spain in 1522 after com
pleting the entire journey under the
command of Juan Sebastian De Elcan
o. These men completed the first cir
cumnavigation of the world. Others r
evolted and returned to the first ye
ar. Pigafetta surviving journals are t
he source of much of what is known
about the voyages of Magellan and El
cano. At least one of his warships in
the Italian Navy, a navigator course
destroyer, was named after him in 1
991.

20. Francis Drake
A renowned pirate of slaving voyages in the 16th
century, was sent to South America in 1577 by Q
ueen Elizabeth II to intercept the gold, silver, an
d jewelry that the Spanish were shipping to Spai
n across the Isthmus of Panama. Since he could n
ot sail back along South America, he proceeded t
o north California traversing through North and
South America, Asia, Africa and returning to Eur
ope in 1580 becoming the second person to circu
mnavigate the globe.
21. Martín Ignacio De Loyola
A renowned missionary in India and China,
who circumnavigated the globe twice in his
lifetime. His first circumnavigation was ma
de in a westerly direction from 1582-1584
from the Canary Islands while the second
was made in an easterly direction between
1585 and 1589. On both accounts, Ignacio
took advantage of the crown of Phillip II o
f Spain which united Spain and Portugal.
22. Pedro Cubero
An ordained Spanish priest who enjoyed tra
veling the world in pursuit of his missionary
work. In 1670. Pedro embarked on a journey
to East Asia that eventually led him to circu
mnavigate the globe through the eastern dir
ection. Unlike his predecessors who circumna
vigated the globe through marine voyages, P
edro embarked on a land voyage through We
stern and Eastern Europe, Western and Cent
ral Asia and North America.
23. Giovanni Francesco Gemelli Careri
A famous 17th-century Italian adventurer an
d traveller. He undertook an around-the-worl
d trip through land and water in five years b
y securing passage in trade ships. His trip, w
hich was mainly done for pleasure rather tha
n profit, was recorded in the sixth volume of
the Giro Del Mondo, which gives detailed acc
ounts of all the countries he visited.
24. William Dampier
Was a great English explorer who explored moder
n day Australia and became the first person to circ
umnavigate the world three times. As a buccaneer,
sea captain, author and scientific observer, William
travelled around the world on three accounts for t
rade purposes. His scientific interests inspired the
great works of Charles Darwin while navigational sk
ills and exploratory voyages that extended imperial
and commercial interests around the globe prompt
ed the colonization of Australia.
25. Jeanne Baré
Was the first woman in history to circumnavigate
the earth. She was a member of the Louis Antoine
de Bougainville’s voyage expedition that embarked
on a round-the-earth trip between 1766 and 1769.
By the time of her death, Jeanne left behind a ves
tige of plants, seeds, and shells that have been pre
served in the national d’histoire naturelle Museum
providing future generation with insights of differ
ent parts of the world.
26. Robert Gray
Was an American trade merchant and sea captain
famous for connecting trading voyages in the north
Pacific coast of North America between 1790 and 1
793 hence pioneering the famous American maritim
e fur trade in that region. It was through this voya
ge that Gray completed the first American circumn
avigation of the world and discovered the Colombia
River in 1792 while exploring the coastline of Oreg
on County.
27. Adam Johann Von Krusenstern And Yuri Lisyansky
The first Russian circumnavigation took place in 1803 a
nd was funded by a Russian-American Company headed
by Adam Johann von Krusenstern. The voyage involved
a two-ship expedition, The aim of the expedition was fo
r Russia to establish trading partnerships with China an
d Japan as well as examine California as a probable colo
ny in South America.
28. Faddey Bellingshausen And Mikhail Lazarev
Bellingshausen was a prominent cartographer app
ointed to head the Russian expedition in explorin
g the Southern Ocean and finding land in the pro
ximity of the South Pole. Mikhail Lazarev was sec
ond in command to Bellingshausen and prepared t
he expedition to Antarctica in 1821. The pair circ
umnavigated the globe twice and never lost each
other on the two trips.
29. Joshua Slocum
Was a Nova Scotian American seaman and adventurer
who became the first person to circumnavigate the glo
be single-handedly. He documented his adventures in
his award-winning bestseller, Sailing Alone around the
World. Joshua sailed using one of the gaff rigged sloo
p oyster boats he rebuilt in Massachusetts and named
it the Spay. He disappeared aboard his boat in 1909 w
hile exploring the Amazon River.
30. Harry Pidgeon
Harry Pidgeon was a renowned American sailor and
an enthusiastic photographer who set the record a
s the second person to circumnavigate the globe si
ngle-handedly. He was also the first person to use
the Panama Canal as the circumnavigation route and
also the first solo circumnavigator to go round the
earth twice. On both trips, Harry used a 34-foot y
awl, which he constructed by himself. Prior to his f
irst trip in 1921, Harry had no experience sailing an
d relied on adventures from a book in the local libr
ary.
31. Edward Beach
Operation Sandblast is the code given to the first
submerged circumnavigation of the globe that took
place in 1960 under the command of Edward Beach
of the United States Navy. The nuclear powered s
ubmarine was an American creation that benchmar
ked America’s technological and scientific prowess
during the Cold War. It completed the circumnavig
ation in 60 days travelling at an average speed of 2
1mph between February 24th and April 25th 1960.
32. Robin Knox-Johnston
An English sailor who became the first person to
circumnavigate the world solo on a non-stop trip in
1969. He was one of the nine sailors to compete in
the Times Golden Globe Race. He wanted the worl
d to have the opportunity to understand the chall
enge and delight of ocean racing diverting attenti
on from other activities like the seven summits. H
e set from Falmouth in June 1968 on his fully pac
ked yacht and returned after 312 days securing hi
s place in history.
33. Marvin Creamer
Was a college professor and American sailor who
sailed through the globe without the help of navi
gational instruments. Creamer together with his
crew boarded a 32-foot boat known as the global
star and relied on the stars, sun, currents, and r
egional biological settings for direction on a roun
d-the-world circumnavigation that took 510 days.
He was motivated by the avid stories of ocean-g
oing sailboats in his teenage years.

• Ferdinand Magellan is the first person to start the world’s
navigation but he didn’t complete it because he was shot by poisonous arrow.
