3. Consent
- Back in England, people had to do what the king said to do.
- In America, the colonists believed in the idea that everyone should have a say in
how government worked.
- This core value was called Consent of the Governed.
4. Taxes
- After the French and Indian War, England needed money to pay for the debt of
the war.
- After many years of Salutary Neglect (when they left the colonies alone), England
passed new taxes on the colonies.
- They replaced Salutary Neglect with Mercantilism = the idea that colonies
should be used by their parent country to make money.
5. Geography
- The geography of the colonies affected how they made money.
- The Northern Region could not farm as much because of long winters and hard
soil.
6. Mayflower Compact
- Earlier we discussed the idea of Consent of the Governed.
- This is the idea that citizens should have a say in how the government worked.
- A great example of this idea was the Mayflower Compact - which was the
agreement used by the Puritans of New England that gave the people a say in
how the government worked.
