2. TITLE
CALL (COMPUTER ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING):
USING OXFORD SMART CHOICE MULTI-ROM TO DEVELOP THE
STUDENTS LISTENING ABILITY
3. BACKGROUND
After observing Senior High School (SMA) Negeri 1 Model
Parepare, the researcher found out that there was unsatisfactory
condition that the students faced in English. The researcher found
that their listening ability was still low. Therefore the researcher
tried to give solution to develop students listening ability.
4. PROBLEM STATEMENT
The problem statement of this research is: “Can the use of CALL
(Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart
Choice Multi-ROM develop the listening ability of the tenth grade
students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare?
5. OBJECTIVE OF RESEARCH
The objective of research was to investigate whether or not the
use of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford
Smart Choice Multi-ROM as an audiovisual learning software can
develop the listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA
Negeri 1 Model Parepare.
7. RESEARCH DESIGN
EG O1 X1 O2
CG O2 X2 O2
EG : Experimental Class
CG : Control Class
O1 : Pre-test
O2 : Post-test
X1 : Treatment with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM
X2 : Treatment with usual material (Handbook of SMA Negeri 1 Model
Parepare)
8. PROCEDURE IN COLLECTING DATA
PRE-TEST
The researcher gave the pre-test before giving treatment to the students.
The researcher gave listening test to the students, and then students listen
to the audio tape and after that the did they test for 30 numbers. It is
purpose is to define the students’ prior ability of listening.
POST-TEST
The post-test gave after the students getting treatment. The researcher
gave listening test to the students, then students listen to the audio tape
and after that the did the test for 30 numbers. The test is given to know
significant difference between the students’ ability before and after applying
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) with Oxford Smart Choice
Multi-ROM
9. FINDINGS
Pre-test
In obtained the rate scores of students listening ability, the
researcher gave listening test for the students before giving them
treatment. The treatment which was given to the experimental
class was using Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM and for the control class was
not using Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) with
Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM.
10. FINDINGS
Post-test
The rate of the students’ score is obtained through listening test
after giving treatment. The treatment which was given to the
experimental class was using Computer Assisted Language
Learning (CALL) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM and for the
control class was not using Computer Assisted Language
Learning (CALL) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM.
11. MEAN SCORE AND STANDARD DEVIATION
Mean score and standard deviation relates among the result of the
listening test observed in Experimental class and Control class
are described in the following table 4.3 for Pre-test and table 4.4
for Post-test.
12. THE T –TEST OF THE STUDENTS’ WRITING
The t-test of students’ listening test was presented in the
following table 4.5.
13. DISCUSSION
In this research, the researcher found that teaching listening by using
CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart
Choice Multi-ROM can develop the students listening ability. The
students who are taught through CALL (Computer Language Learning)
with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM have better performance in
listening ability than the student who are taught by not using CALL
(Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart Choice
Multi-ROM although the researcher did same treatment in two class.
Moreover, it shows in the application of t-test for two class in post-test,
where t-test value higher then t – table value.
14. CONCLUSION
Based on the previous chapter, the researcher concludes that the students
in experimental group who are taught listening by using Oxford Smart
Choice Multi-ROM in listening process are better that the students in
control group who are taught by using audio player. It is proved with the
result of the pre-test and post-test for level significance (α = 0,05), the post-
test was higher than pre-test. It means that, the use of CALL (Computer
Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM in
listening comprehension can develop the students’ listening ability of the
Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare.
