Jacob Klerman Essay
Spring of 1861: Dispute with a Kentucky and Ohio Citizen Jacob Klerman had just crossed the
Kentucky–Ohio border. He was on his way to see an uncle of his, who was a Kentucky abolitionist.
The same was true for Jacob. The reason he was traveling into northern Kentucky was because he
wanted to help his uncle conceive an escape route for slaves at a Kentucky plantation. Their goal
was to help as many slaves as possible escape to freedom. Klerman knew their work could result in
fatal consequences, but that didn't stop him. He would give his life to better the lives of those who
needed it, so he trekked on. About an hour and a half passed when he saw that he was heading
toward a familiar supply store. It was the first sign that he was getting closer to his uncle's houes. He
quickened his step and finally was about 5 yards away when he heard an angry shout come from the
closed front door of the store. "What we're experience right now is just exactly what the colonists
experienced. Just like Britain, the North is tormenting and taunting us with their false laws to hold
back our rights. Slavery is our right and is needed to help our country's wealth. " "They're even
making books and papers saying slavery is immoral," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To this day, poor women and children are working in factories. They work each day, not to earn
crops or build homes, but to get paid a salary. Where are the solid earnings in that? If this is keeps
on going on, we'll be paying people to do everything for us. It's lazy. Besides, we need slaves for our
economy. If we didn't, the south would crumble. They are vital for our economy. And guess what, it
won't just be us that will be affected. The north will deteriorate as well." Mark and Greg were
determined that Jacob would finally shut up after after saying this, but Jacob wanted to have a few
more lines in before he couldn't control himself any

Informative Essay On Nightjohn By Gary Paulsen
Many Citizens in the United States don't understand the true history of our country, so the true terror
of slavery is often left untold. Nightjohn is a novel written by Gary Paulsen that tells the tale of a
little girl that was enslaved named Sarney. In this novel, Gary Paulsen shows how horrific slavery
was, and how slaves dealt with the cruelty of their treatment. Although Gary Paulsen's novel,
Nightjohn, is considered historical fiction, the descriptions of the harsh work conditions, the cruel
punishments that they dealt with, and the bond between the slaves can be corroborated with multiple
sources. Slaves in the U.S were treated like animals, they had to work in the worst of conditions and
had no breaks. In the novel Nightjohn, the people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slaves found a happiness in each other, even though it was a hard time for them, they looked out for
one and another no matter the cost. Nightjohn shows the audience that slaves made sure one was
well taken care of and looked after. A couple examples of this are when Mammy took a whipping
for Sarney and when Mammy cleaned up Alice after she was attacked by the bloodhounds. Andrea
Williams wrote about pit schools, in her text, it gave background on how some slaves learned how
to read and write. Her informative essay made it to the Harvard Library, they only bring in credible
sources. In her essay she states "Slaves would slip out of their quarters at night and go to these pits,
and someone who had some learning would have a school.". This matches with Nightjohn because
Sarney did attend a school where a slave that learned how to read and write taught others. The
slaves that ran the school knew that they could of been killed for teaching others how to read and
write because it is illegal for slaves to know those things. Slaves that were like Nightjohn cared for
other slaves and wanted other slaves to be able to recall their events in slavery so they risked
everything to educate other slaves. Northup also stated in his interview about his time in slavery "In
about three–fourths of an hour several of the slaves shouted and maade signs for me to run.".
Although the slaves were supposed to be helping their Master in finding Northup, they helped alert
him that danger was coming. If their master saw this they could of gotten a beating or a lashing, but
nevertheless they wanted to help a friend escape the terror of slavery. This happened in Nightjohn
when Nightjohn himself escaped slavery, Waller's helpers helped alert him that Waller was on his
way so he could be aware of the incoming danger. This shows that the slaves did care for one
because they knew they could get in trouble, but watched

Short Story: Tenant Of The Fifties
The boys stood gasping, their eyes on the tall facade that loomed. Where they slept; where they ate.
Where they lived –their laughter soaked into the floorboards, echos of jokes and taunts and teasing.
Ghosts of them; wrestling in the dorms, sprinting through the halls, bounding up the steps. The
imprint of their existence and the existence of generations of boys before them, separated by the
times but all essentially the same. Tenants of the fifties still nicked each other's books on the way to
classes, boys from the sixties still hurriedly snuffed out their cigarettes when they heard the dean

The Sexual Revolution And The Contraceptive Pill
The Sexual Revolution has been one of the most defining movements in recent world history. It is
the only event other than a world war that has irrevocably shaped our global public consciousness.
When we here the term, The Sexual Revolution, we unconsciously begin to associate it with several
late 20th century cultural movements and philosophies. The most famous of these are its influences
through music, and the contraceptive pill. On May 9th, 1960, the United States Food and Drug
Admiration approved the world 's first commercially produced birth–control pill, and from then on,
the world would never be the same. The pill was heralded as ushering in a new age of "greater
reproductive freedom to American women" and it was credited with starting the cultural paradigm
shift commonly called Sexual Revolution (History.com Staff). However, the contraceptive pill itself
did not have the power to change a culture, it was only an instrument to facilitate a culture in
changing itself. It had no power; it only gave people a way to have greater sexual liberties without
consequences. So what made the culture want to change? What truly caused the Sexual Revolution?
By looking deeper into its root philosophies and causes, the Sexual Revolution can be viewed as a
product of Darwinist human 'unexceptionalism'. To understand the revolution's underlying cause,
you have to understand what The Sexual Revolution was, and perhaps more importantly, what it still
represents today. The Sexual

Sherlock Holmes Use Of Extract
Holmes is presented to us as a complex and unique character both in this extract and the whole
novella. Within this passage Holmes almost makes a plea in "Give me the most abstruse cryptogram
or the most intricate analysis". This suggests to the reader that work, which provides "mental
exaltation" is a basis necessity for a man like Holmes. In the opening of the novella, we have seen
that Watson is concerned for Holmes' drug taking which albeit disturbing to a modern day reader,
suggests that Holmes is willing to experiment of his own mind. He seems to view everything he
does scientifically and as an intellectual exercise and sport. He concludes that " its secondary action
is a matter of a small moment" showing the reader both how he views drug taking, but that his drug
taking is a calculated risk which he has thoroughly considered. ... Show more content on

This perhaps implies that he finds it difficult to cope with any other methodology apart from his

manner. It may also suggest Holmes is a little arrogant in his character; something that Watson
considers when he says he is " irritated by the egotism of his colleague". The adverb "only" may
show this egotism of Holmes as he is boasting about being the singular person in the world with this
certain profession. Holmes operates rationally and logically, pinpointing evidence with close
examination. " You have an extraordinary gift for the minutiae", Watson remarks showing the reader
how even someone who is close to Holmes is still amazed by his amazing skill. This pinpointing
evidence is also seen in the novella with " Holmes advanced in the same slow methodical way" The
sibilance of the 's' in " same slow" creates an image of Holmes carefully searching the area for even

The Underground Railroad: Way To Freedom
The Underground Railroad: Way to Freedom
3rd Draft
Hope Conners
The Underground Railroad is a very helpful and dangerous way slaves used to find freedom (TSI).
This was a network of secret routes and safe houses to free African Americans (Underground
Railroad 21). It started in the 1800s and ended by the time of the civil war (Crew). The
Underground Railroad is an act that was shown to stop slavery (Underground Railroad 21). The
Underground Railroad still acts as a representation for America that patriots will risk their own lives
to give freedom to all people.
A major part in the Underground Railroad is the stations. Slaves could hide in barns, houses, or any
other hiding place until they move to the next station (Bial 7). Slaves normally ... Show more

Animal Overpopulation Over Animals
Over 300 million dogs inhabit the face of the world. Of those, the United States is home for over
100 million of them. Unfortunately, only 62 percent of the U.S. population own either a cat or dog.
Doing the math, this means that close to 70 million dogs do not have owners. What happens to
them? About ten percent of them enter shelters each year (Henn). As for the rest, they are the strays
that fend for themselves. They eat leftovers if they are lucky. They haven't ever know of the warmth
of a bath. They may be fearful of people due to past injuries inflicted by owners who did not love
them. They sleep in filth as long as they feel safe. All of these animals roam the fields and streets
and we try to avoid talking about them. A simple solution to the problem of overpopulation is to find
people who want a dog; however, many people have specific preferences for either a certain breed
or a purebred dog. It was through their wants that breeding was created. Because of breeding, the
problem expanded. People's tastes factor into whether the dog will be bred to fit the wants, end up in
a shelter, or be taken into a home. These preferences can originate from their life styles. Owners
may have demanding lives but they may still desire to have a dog for when they have rest time. With
them not being home all the time, a big dog with a big bladder would be perfect. Maybe the people
want to travel with their dog. If that is the case, then they would be looking for a dog bred to fit that

Spying In Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game
A spy is a person who secretly collects information on the activities, movements, and plans of an
enemy of the law. Sanger Rainsford, the Protagonist in The Most Dangerous Game, could be a
perfect candidate for the role of a spy. Spying requires that you have or develop a number of
practical and risk–averse characteristics. Rainsford shows the strong physical ability, the mental
thought process, emotional traits, keen observation and social skills that a person would have to
require to fill the role of a spy. A person must be physically active if they want to accomplish being
a secret spy. They need to be able to get away from the person they are spying on if threatened. In

Rainsford had to come up with cleaver traps to protect himself from the bloodhounds. In the process
of doing this he has to imagine everything in his head of how this trap is going to work. "With
flying fingers he wove a rough carpet of weeds and branches and with it he covered the mouth of
the pit. Then, wet with sweat and aching with tiredness, he crouched behind the stump of a
lightning–charred tree"(Connells). He had to build everything by hand to make this a successful pit
to trap the bloodhounds. He indeed kills a hound from the pack. A spy must have keen observational
skills when collecting information about his victim. When Rainsford first arrived to the general's
house on the island he finds out many things about him like, when he started hunting, his fathers
influence on hunting, and what he hunts now...Humans. "Rainsford leaned across the table, absorbed
in what his host was saying"(Connells). Spies have to have this skill to collect and remember this

Analysis Of Bury Me In A Free Land
Reading a poem written by Frances Watkins Harper, is like being transported to the 1800's; one
minute the reader is sitting in a chair reading the first stanza of what seems a simple poem, and
before one knows it, they are an abolitionist watching a family being torn apart at a slave auction.
Harper does this transporting through her use of tone. A writer creates a particular tone in his or her
writing using literary tools like characterization, diction, or theme. Harper strongly protests against
slavery and portrays the horrid realities of slavery, in several of her poems, and accomplishes this
through the use of diction and imagery.
Each poem has its own tone, and a writer may use diction or word choice to convey a certain mood.
For example, Harper's, Bury Me in A Free Land, poem shows how diction can play a role in
conveying a dismal tone. In the beginning of the poem Harpers word choice for the last line of the
first stanza, conveys a since of rebellion when she writes, "But not in a land where men are slaves"
(4). Here the word "men" is referencing the deep inequality between people, without having to
mention race. This also evokes a since of deflated pride; being buried in a country where human
beings are treated as cattle. All men are supposed to be "created equal", but Harper makes it clear
that some men are not being treated as such.
Further into the poem, Harper's word choice clearly evokes a terrifying tone, when she describes the
dehumanization that slaves are

Poseidon And Zeus Compare And Contrast
Lifetimes ago, just after the Titans were captured and cut up into pieces in Tartarus, an argument
between Poseidon and Zeus brewed. "Zeus, my brother, we can't just let humans be like this. Our
father Cronos made humans the way they are so they would be easier to capture, and torture! Their
four legs make them not be able to walk properly, and two souls per body. Each soul has wishes that
are different, and personalities, we can't let them live this way!" Poseidon pointed out. Zeus
remained speechless and thought about it throughout the night. Humans had four arms and legs, two
heads, two souls, in one big body. Cronos made humans like they were so they could be easier to
capture, and torture, and even with Cronos and the other Titans, gone, their life was miserable.
During the night Zeus thought it over and decided that he would get much more praise for making
their lives better, and they wouldn't be as ugly–looking. He sent Hermes to tell Poseidon that he
would help the humans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Andrew Jackson Argumentative Essay
As Jackson transitioned from a military leader to the president of the United States, he changed
from no longer being able to explicitly announce his true motives in gaining Indian land for the
state; Jackson had to use deception and secrecy to accomplish his intentions. During battles against
the Indian tribes, military leader, Andrew Jackson would often dehumanize his foes as "savage
bloodhounds" and "blood thirsty barbarians"; his belief that the advancement of the republic could
only occur if the Native enemies were in submission, rationalized his use of violence (Takaki 85).
Jackson's role as a general allowed him to assert(declare/insist) his purpose of having Natives ceded
their land to the state. He was able to use any means and firepower

What Happened To Jack Mccarthy's Murder?
The case has almost gone cold. It's been over a month since the last killing and not much evidence
has shown up, the latest lead we have is from the most recent murder. It had been exactly two
months since I joined the Metropolitan police. It was November Ninth the day murder took place,
Mary Jane Kelly was her name. Ironic, don't you think? Jack McCarthy had found her body after
deciding to collect her overdue rent. He had supposedly showed up to her room in Miller's Court
and had noticed the window was shattered and after looking through it and seeing the mortifying
image of her mangled body, he ran looking for an inspector to come and look at the ghastly scene.
He found Inspectors Abberline and Beck. I arrived half an hour after Inspectors Abberline and

Anyways I digress, we finally got to open the door to the apartment after Superintendent Arnold
arrived. The scene before us was gruesome, blood covered the walls and floors, chunks of meat
skewered everywhere, bloody sheets covered in her intestines, and the horrendous stench of her last
dinner ingrained into what only the most technical people would call a body. Of the few constables
and sergeants that had followed Inspector Abberline to the case, all had thrown up. All except me
and the Inspectors. To be completely honest I don't think I was supposed to be there, but they didn't
seem to mind. At first that is. They sent me away to close off the entirety of Miller's Court. My 24
shilling pay wasn't worth being an officer of the law. There wasn't many officers and that meant
those of us that were officers had to take care of 900 people per officer here in London. The only
thing that kept me from quitting was the feeling I got when I arrest someone and I feel like I
contribute to society. Sorry about complaining, but i

Uncle Tom 's Cabin By Harriet Beecher Stowe
In the 21st century, Hollywood transformed best–selling novels into movies; in the 19th century,
best–selling novels became plays. Uncle Tom's Cabin became the best–selling novel of the 19th
century and elicited widely varying dramatizations. While copyright protection laws are extensive
today, they protected only the actual printing of the novel in 1852. Being a phenomenal success,
Uncle Tom's Cabin was immediately adapted and dramatized without Harriet Beecher Stowe's
approval. In these dramatizations known as Tom shows, characters became comical caricatures
through the use of blackface minstrel traditions and the true purpose of the anti–slavery novel was
lost in this mockery. Unfortunately, these plays frame the modern understanding of Uncle Tom's
Cabin as people became less likely to spend time reading the novel when slavery was already
abolished. Tom shows were loosely based on the Stowe's novel and generally added extravagant
effects such as bloodhounds, minstrel traditions, double characters, and alternative endings that
avoided Stowe's original anti–slavery message. When Eliza made her escape in the novel, she was
chased by two slave hunters, Tom Loker and his friend, Mr. Marks. On the contrary, adaptations
included great Danes to represent bloodhounds in the scene where Eliza crosses the Ohio river to
thrill and attract audiences. Thousands of adaptations profoundly increased the dramatic effects of
Eliza's scene on the Ohio river by including an outrageous

College Admissions Essay: Do Things Never Get Better
Things never get easier, you simply get better. Over the course of the past three years there have
been plentiful events, going from tragedies and to celebrations. Something that I have changed my
mind about is how I view myself. Growing up I was very limited due to my family never having
much money, in elementary children don't notice wealth, whereas adults can sniff it out like a
bloodhound. My first years in school were simple, playing in sandboxes, playing with strangers
children on the swings at the park, no one cared where you were from, how much your parents
make, how you dress, all that really mattered was that you were playing on the slide together.
Everyone has to grow up and as I grew, it seemed that my fellow classmates could tell I was
different from my hand me down cloths, being a chubby kid, and crippling shyness, things weren't
as simple anymore. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Bloodhound-The Hero In The Iliad As A Hero
The Bloodhound– the Hero
The bloodhound howled out to the police men following after the tracker dog. She has been found.
The terrified little girl, step by step, climbed up the ladder out of the old man's hidden cellar; the
police men dashed to her for comfort. The bloodhound is proclaimed a "hero." Heroes have been
cultural icons since the first of men. "The Iliad," written, by Homer is an epic about the journey of
Achilles, a demigod, during the Trojan War. "Sha–Nama," also an epic–written by Firdawsi, is about
a son on a quest for his father during the Persian and Turkish war. "Gilgamesh," an epic written by
early Sumerians, is about a king in search of immortality after his best friend's bitter death. Moana,
an adventure movie by Walt Disney, is about a young girl on a dangerous mission to save her
people. Star Wars: A New Hope, a science fictional film by George Lucas, is about an adventurous
boy working together with allies to restore freedom and justice to the Galaxy. Characters in a story
who are set apart from society are often defined as a literary hero by reason of their leadership, a
unique quality they possess, and an opportunity.
Leadership is an important trait a hero must have. Without leadership, a hero isn't respected or
followed by people. "Someone will have to go,"(Disney). Moana's island was in danger, and

Beagle Research Paper
The Beagle is a breed of small to medium–sized dog. A member of the hound group, it is similar in
appearance to the foxhound, but smaller with shorter legs and longer, softer ears. Beagles are scent
hounds, developed primarily for tracking hare, rabbit, deer, and other small game. They have a great
sense of smell and tracking instinct that sees them employed as detection dogs for prohibited
agricultural imports and foodstuffs in quarantine around the world. Beagles are intelligent but
single–minded, and popular pets because of their size, even temper, and lack of inherited health
problems. Although beagle–type dogs have existed for 2,500 years, the modern breed was
developed in Great Britain around the 1830s from several breeds, including the ... Show more

Any true hound color is acceptable in Basset Hounds, and no one color is preferred over any other.
The source of color is the E Locus MC1R, which has four alleles: EM, EG, E, and e. The EM, E and
e alleles are present in the Basset Hounds. The E allele allows for the production of both red and
black pigments, so is present with the majority of color patterns in Basset Hounds. Red and Lemon
colors are caused by the e allele of MC1R. The e allele is recessive, so red and lemon dogs are
homozygous e/e. Lemon dogs are lighter in color than Reds, but the genetic mechanism that dilutes
phaeomelanin in this instance is unknown. No black hairs will be present on either Red or Lemon
dogs. If there are any black hairs, the dog is officially a tricolor. The EM allele produces a black
mask on the face that may extend up around the eyes and onto the ears. This pattern is most easily
seen on Mahogany dogs, although any Basset color pattern may express the EM allele, except for
"red and white" or "lemon and white" due to e/e. Many Bassets have a clearly defined white blaze
and a white tip to their tail, intended to aid hunters in finding their dogs when tracking through
underbrush. The Basset Hound coat is naturally oily, giving off a distinctive "hound scent," which is
natural to the breed.

Analysis Of Harriet Ann Jacobs Incidents In The Life Of A...
Can you imagine living in an attic for seven years, and your only motivation being a possible, but
not assured vision of liberty? This is what life was like for Harriet Ann Jacobs, born into slavery in
Edenton, North Carolina in 1813, with a long shot at obtaining her and her children's freedom. In
her book, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Jacobs depicts her experiences as a slave by using her
daily routine and hardships to portray what life was like as a black woman. Being an African
American female growing in an oppressed society, she uses the pseudonym of Linda Bent to protect
her and her family's identity.
Life for most slaves was physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting. Some of them were
engaged in daily beatings, long working hours without ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The plantation owners opposed literacy to prevent the slaves from turning against them. Linda was
one of the lucky ones that was taught to read by her mother's mistress, which helped keep her sane
inside the attic. She constantly read the bible helping her develop her writing skills, however it was
not enough. In order to fully articulate the message Harriet Jacobs wanted to get across in her book,
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, she asks her friend Amy Post for some help. It is not surprising
that even though she did not have the appropriate education to write, she was still able to describe
her experiences vividly. These events were not something she could forget from one day to another,
and used this to her advantage in order to convey the brutality female slaves endured in the South. "I
admit that the black man is inferior. But what is it that makes him so? It is the ignorance in which
white men compel him to live; it is the torturing whip that lashes manhood out of him; it is the fierce
bloodhounds of the South, and the scarcely less cruel human bloodhounds of the North, who enforce
the Fugitive Slave Law. They do the

Indians Influence On Native Americans
Native Americans centered their lives on nature, on the land, and on their tribes. They were a
horticultural group, very talented at farming. They lived off the land, cared for it, and believed that
if they did good by it, it would be good to them. The Natives had an organized political system, with
the tribal chief at the head. They looked after their tribe members, took care of one another, and
were, in a sense, an extended family. Their "government", if it can be considered such, was
representative of their people. They had voting rights, and in were, in all sense of the word, a

Josephine Bloodhound: Play Analysis
It was an interesting stylistic choice to have Camille, the most overtly feminine in a traditional
sense, as the only character wearing any type of costume. It was still the black expected from a
staged reading, but it gave her a little extra something to stand out from the others. This also served
as a way to begin to show what a transition to a proper production may have looked like for The
Tale of Josephine Bloodhound. The stark attire of the actors, similar to the lack of scenery, created a
viewing experience in which the acting was truly the major focus. The lighting was simple, a quality
fitting for the staged reading setting. All the actors could be seen, so the lighting designer did all that
was expected of them. Had the production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator did an excellent job with his part with the rise and fall of his voice perfectly capturing
the mood of the stage directions In my opinion, the play could have benefitted from Blackbeard
playing a bigger role. For a young woman with little experience at sea to be the uncontested captain
of a pirate ship, especially given the time in which the play is set, is somewhat difficult to believe.
Had Blackbeard perhaps been on the ship with Josephine, it would have given her a greater deal of
credibility. Additionally, sailors were extremely superstitious when it came to having women on
ships and would likely have had an issue with Josephine even if she hadn't been captain. The
concept of having her as a captain is one that I can support, but within the historical context it is
difficult to believe. The bare set consisting only of chairs for the actors and a podium for the
narrator had benefits and drawbacks. Since there was no elaborate set to take in, you really did focus
entirely on the acting and merit of the play overall. However, a set serves to give a production and
would give a clearer picture of some of the historical

About 93 years ago one of America's greatest activist of their time was born with a destiny that

he would stop at nothing to make sure it came true. Malcolm X, also known as Malcolm little was
born May 19th of 1925 to Luise and Earl Little. Malcolm Little became Malcolm X after being
arrested for robbery in the year 1946. He committed robberies to help support his siblings and help
his mother. Malcolm X was the 4th of 8 children. He had a very rough childhood. Malcolm's family

attached to the lens by suspensory ligaments. When distant objects are viewed, the ciliary muscles

suspensory ligaments and allowing the lens to assume a thicker shape. The cornea bends light but
the lens finishes focusing. As a person ages, their ability to focus their lens decreases. Glasses can
correct for this loss of focusing ability. Focusing occurs when the eye is too long and the plane of

##ymbolism In A Raisin In The Sun, By Lorraine Hansberry...
One of the best ways to enhance writing is to use symbolism. Two authors, Lorraine Hansberry and
Harriet Jacobs, are good examples of using symbolism in writing. A Raisin in the Sun is a play
written by Lorraine Hansberry about the life of the Youngers family, a black family consisting of
Mama, the mother of the family, her children Walter and Beneatha, and Walter's wife and son. This
family struggles in a city of hateful white people that wish to crush their dreams and spirit. They
experiences lots of tension with the arrival of a check for ten thousand dollars. The money is wanted
by everyone in the family, each of which would rather do what they want to do, but Mama, the head
of the family decides what to do with the money, creating even more tension among them. The other
book, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, is an autobiography about Harriet Jacobs, a slave girl,
who suffered before her master for most of the first twenty years of her life, before escaping with
her children to the northern states and freeing herself. In both books, the author is very good at using
symbolism to enhance their writing. In their literary works, Lorraine Hansberry and Harriet Jacobs
use symbolism to increase the meaning of their text by using them to give better explanations, to
intensify illustration, and to make comparisons between objects. First, Jacobs and Hansberry both
use symbolism by using it to compare objects in their works. Jacob and Hansberry use symbolism to

Similarities Between Lord Randall Get Up And Bar The Door
"Lord Randall" and "Get Up and Bar The Door" are short ballads from the Middle Ages. Ballads are
a song like poems that is put to music. The word ballad derives from an Old French word meaning
"dancing song". Scops and bards sing the ballads as a source of entertainment. The people present in
the Middle Ages use the ballads that the Scops and Bards sing to also dance. Our music now in the
twenty–first century originates from the old ballads. The ballads "Lord Randall" and "Get Up and

the door while he sits and does absolutely nothing. The woman tells her husband that he needs to

Differences Between Henry Clay And The Old Guard Dbq
Years prior to 1860, the States were able to make acceptable compromises all thanks to Henry Clay.
The Old Guard and Clay's beliefs stated that the union should be preserved no matter what the cost.
This belief system however was not passed down and abandon throughout generations, and thus the
New Guard was born. This generation also brought along a wave of abolitionists and rising political
tension, and by 1860 the ability to be able to compromise was terminated. One determining factor
that I was alluding to earlier was the death of Henry Clay and the Old Guard. Clay was a
phenomenal political figure. He proposed the American System and and was a prominent leader in
creating compromises from 1820–1850. His focus was to unify the states and to preserve the Union.
In document A you can see the frustration that Clay experiences when he proclaims "I for one ...

Jacob Klerman Essay

  • 1. Jacob Klerman Essay Spring of 1861: Dispute with a Kentucky and Ohio Citizen Jacob Klerman had just crossed the Kentucky–Ohio border. He was on his way to see an uncle of his, who was a Kentucky abolitionist. The same was true for Jacob. The reason he was traveling into northern Kentucky was because he wanted to help his uncle conceive an escape route for slaves at a Kentucky plantation. Their goal was to help as many slaves as possible escape to freedom. Klerman knew their work could result in fatal consequences, but that didn't stop him. He would give his life to better the lives of those who needed it, so he trekked on. About an hour and a half passed when he saw that he was heading toward a familiar supply store. It was the first sign that he was getting closer to his uncle's houes. He quickened his step and finally was about 5 yards away when he heard an angry shout come from the closed front door of the store. "What we're experience right now is just exactly what the colonists experienced. Just like Britain, the North is tormenting and taunting us with their false laws to hold back our rights. Slavery is our right and is needed to help our country's wealth. " "They're even making books and papers saying slavery is immoral," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To this day, poor women and children are working in factories. They work each day, not to earn crops or build homes, but to get paid a salary. Where are the solid earnings in that? If this is keeps on going on, we'll be paying people to do everything for us. It's lazy. Besides, we need slaves for our economy. If we didn't, the south would crumble. They are vital for our economy. And guess what, it won't just be us that will be affected. The north will deteriorate as well." Mark and Greg were determined that Jacob would finally shut up after after saying this, but Jacob wanted to have a few more lines in before he couldn't control himself any ... • 2. Informative Essay On Nightjohn By Gary Paulsen Many Citizens in the United States don't understand the true history of our country, so the true terror of slavery is often left untold. Nightjohn is a novel written by Gary Paulsen that tells the tale of a little girl that was enslaved named Sarney. In this novel, Gary Paulsen shows how horrific slavery was, and how slaves dealt with the cruelty of their treatment. Although Gary Paulsen's novel, Nightjohn, is considered historical fiction, the descriptions of the harsh work conditions, the cruel punishments that they dealt with, and the bond between the slaves can be corroborated with multiple sources. Slaves in the U.S were treated like animals, they had to work in the worst of conditions and had no breaks. In the novel Nightjohn, the people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Slaves found a happiness in each other, even though it was a hard time for them, they looked out for one and another no matter the cost. Nightjohn shows the audience that slaves made sure one was well taken care of and looked after. A couple examples of this are when Mammy took a whipping for Sarney and when Mammy cleaned up Alice after she was attacked by the bloodhounds. Andrea Williams wrote about pit schools, in her text, it gave background on how some slaves learned how to read and write. Her informative essay made it to the Harvard Library, they only bring in credible sources. In her essay she states "Slaves would slip out of their quarters at night and go to these pits, and someone who had some learning would have a school.". This matches with Nightjohn because Sarney did attend a school where a slave that learned how to read and write taught others. The slaves that ran the school knew that they could of been killed for teaching others how to read and write because it is illegal for slaves to know those things. Slaves that were like Nightjohn cared for other slaves and wanted other slaves to be able to recall their events in slavery so they risked everything to educate other slaves. Northup also stated in his interview about his time in slavery "In about three–fourths of an hour several of the slaves shouted and maade signs for me to run.". Although the slaves were supposed to be helping their Master in finding Northup, they helped alert him that danger was coming. If their master saw this they could of gotten a beating or a lashing, but nevertheless they wanted to help a friend escape the terror of slavery. This happened in Nightjohn when Nightjohn himself escaped slavery, Waller's helpers helped alert him that Waller was on his way so he could be aware of the incoming danger. This shows that the slaves did care for one because they knew they could get in trouble, but watched ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tenants of the fifties still nicked each other's books on the way to classes, boys from the sixties still hurriedly snuffed out their cigarettes when they heard the dean coming, and boys from the seventies still climbed out their windows at night when they needed to escape. • 5. The Sexual Revolution And The Contraceptive Pill The Sexual Revolution has been one of the most defining movements in recent world history. It is the only event other than a world war that has irrevocably shaped our global public consciousness. When we here the term, The Sexual Revolution, we unconsciously begin to associate it with several late 20th century cultural movements and philosophies. The most famous of these are its influences through music, and the contraceptive pill. On May 9th, 1960, the United States Food and Drug Admiration approved the world 's first commercially produced birth–control pill, and from then on, the world would never be the same. The pill was heralded as ushering in a new age of "greater reproductive freedom to American women" and it was credited with starting the cultural paradigm shift commonly called Sexual Revolution (History.com Staff). However, the contraceptive pill itself did not have the power to change a culture, it was only an instrument to facilitate a culture in changing itself. It had no power; it only gave people a way to have greater sexual liberties without consequences. So what made the culture want to change? What truly caused the Sexual Revolution? By looking deeper into its root philosophies and causes, the Sexual Revolution can be viewed as a product of Darwinist human 'unexceptionalism'. To understand the revolution's underlying cause, you have to understand what The Sexual Revolution was, and perhaps more importantly, what it still represents today. The Sexual ... • 7. Sherlock Holmes Use Of Extract Holmes is presented to us as a complex and unique character both in this extract and the whole novella. Within this passage Holmes almost makes a plea in "Give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis". This suggests to the reader that work, which provides "mental exaltation" is a basis necessity for a man like Holmes. In the opening of the novella, we have seen that Watson is concerned for Holmes' drug taking which albeit disturbing to a modern day reader, suggests that Holmes is willing to experiment of his own mind. He seems to view everything he does scientifically and as an intellectual exercise and sport. He concludes that " its secondary action is a matter of a small moment" showing the reader both how he views drug taking, but that his drug taking is a calculated risk which he has thoroughly considered. ... It may also suggest Holmes is a little arrogant in his character; something that Watson considers when he says he is " irritated by the egotism of his colleague". The adverb "only" may show this egotism of Holmes as he is boasting about being the singular person in the world with this certain profession. Holmes operates rationally and logically, pinpointing evidence with close examination. " You have an extraordinary gift for the minutiae", Watson remarks showing the reader how even someone who is close to Holmes is still amazed by his amazing skill. This pinpointing evidence is also seen in the novella with " Holmes advanced in the same slow methodical way" The sibilance of the 's' in " same slow" creates an image of Holmes carefully searching the area for even the smallest piece of ... The Underground Railroad: Way To Freedom The Underground Railroad: Way to Freedom 3rd Draft Hope Conners The Underground Railroad is a very helpful and dangerous way slaves used to find freedom (TSI). This was a network of secret routes and safe houses to free African Americans (Underground Railroad 21). It started in the 1800s and ended by the time of the civil war (Crew). The Underground Railroad is an act that was shown to stop slavery (Underground Railroad 21). The Underground Railroad still acts as a representation for America that patriots will risk their own lives to give freedom to all people. A major part in the Underground Railroad is the stations. • 10. Animal Overpopulation Over Animals Over 300 million dogs inhabit the face of the world. Of those, the United States is home for over 100 million of them. Unfortunately, only 62 percent of the U.S. population own either a cat or dog. Doing the math, this means that close to 70 million dogs do not have owners. What happens to them? About ten percent of them enter shelters each year (Henn). As for the rest, they are the strays that fend for themselves. They eat leftovers if they are lucky. They haven't ever know of the warmth of a bath. They may be fearful of people due to past injuries inflicted by owners who did not love them. They sleep in filth as long as they feel safe. All of these animals roam the fields and streets and we try to avoid talking about them. A simple solution to the problem of overpopulation is to find people who want a dog; however, many people have specific preferences for either a certain breed or a purebred dog. It was through their wants that breeding was created. Because of breeding, the problem expanded. People's tastes factor into whether the dog will be bred to fit the wants, end up in a shelter, or be taken into a home. These preferences can originate from their life styles. Owners may have demanding lives but they may still desire to have a dog for when they have rest time. With them not being home all the time, a big dog with a big bladder would be perfect. Maybe the people want to travel with their dog. If that is the case, then they would be looking for a dog bred to fit that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Analysis Of Bury Me In A Free Land Reading a poem written by Frances Watkins Harper, is like being transported to the 1800's; one minute the reader is sitting in a chair reading the first stanza of what seems a simple poem, and before one knows it, they are an abolitionist watching a family being torn apart at a slave auction. Harper does this transporting through her use of tone. A writer creates a particular tone in his or her writing using literary tools like characterization, diction, or theme. Harper strongly protests against slavery and portrays the horrid realities of slavery, in several of her poems, and accomplishes this through the use of diction and imagery. Each poem has its own tone, and a writer may use diction or word choice to convey a certain mood. For example, Harper's, Bury Me in A Free Land, poem shows how diction can play a role in conveying a dismal tone. In the beginning of the poem Harpers word choice for the last line of the first stanza, conveys a since of rebellion when she writes, "But not in a land where men are slaves" (4). Here the word "men" is referencing the deep inequality between people, without having to mention race. This also evokes a since of deflated pride; being buried in a country where human beings are treated as cattle. All men are supposed to be "created equal", but Harper makes it clear that some men are not being treated as such. Further into the poem, Harper's word choice clearly evokes a terrifying tone, when she describes the dehumanization that slaves are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"Zeus, my brother, we can't just let humans be like this. Our father Cronos made humans the way they are so they would be easier to capture, and torture! Their four legs make them not be able to walk properly, and two souls per body. Each soul has wishes that are different, and personalities, we can't let them live this way!" Poseidon pointed out. Zeus remained speechless and thought about it throughout the night. Humans had four arms and legs, two heads, two souls, in one big body. Cronos made humans like they were so they could be easier to capture, and torture, and even with Cronos and the other Titans, gone, their life was miserable. • 24. Uncle Tom 's Cabin By Harriet Beecher Stowe In the 21st century, Hollywood transformed best–selling novels into movies; in the 19th century, best–selling novels became plays. Uncle Tom's Cabin became the best–selling novel of the 19th century and elicited widely varying dramatizations. While copyright protection laws are extensive today, they protected only the actual printing of the novel in 1852. Being a phenomenal success, Uncle Tom's Cabin was immediately adapted and dramatized without Harriet Beecher Stowe's approval. In these dramatizations known as Tom shows, characters became comical caricatures through the use of blackface minstrel traditions and the true purpose of the anti–slavery novel was lost in this mockery. Unfortunately, these plays frame the modern understanding of Uncle Tom's Cabin as people became less likely to spend time reading the novel when slavery was already abolished. Tom shows were loosely based on the Stowe's novel and generally added extravagant effects such as bloodhounds, minstrel traditions, double characters, and alternative endings that avoided Stowe's original anti–slavery message. When Eliza made her escape in the novel, she was chased by two slave hunters, Tom Loker and his friend, Mr. Marks. On the contrary, adaptations included great Danes to represent bloodhounds in the scene where Eliza crosses the Ohio river to thrill and attract audiences. The source of color is the E Locus MC1R, which has four alleles: EM, EG, E, and e. The EM, E and e alleles are present in the Basset Hounds. The E allele allows for the production of both red and black pigments, so is present with the majority of color patterns in Basset Hounds. Red and Lemon colors are caused by the e allele of MC1R. The e allele is recessive, so red and lemon dogs are homozygous e/e. Lemon dogs are lighter in color than Reds, but the genetic mechanism that dilutes phaeomelanin in this instance is unknown. No black hairs will be present on either Red or Lemon dogs. If there are any black hairs, the dog is officially a tricolor. The EM allele produces a black mask on the face that may extend up around the eyes and onto the ears. This pattern is most easily seen on Mahogany dogs, although any Basset color pattern may express the EM allele, except for "red and white" or "lemon and white" due to e/e. It was still the black expected from a staged reading, but it gave her a little extra something to stand out from the others. This also served as a way to begin to show what a transition to a proper production may have looked like for The Tale of Josephine Bloodhound. The stark attire of the actors, similar to the lack of scenery, created a viewing experience in which the acting was truly the major focus. Had Blackbeard perhaps been on the ship with Josephine, it would have given her a greater deal of credibility. Additionally, sailors were extremely superstitious when it came to having women on ships and would likely have had an issue with Josephine even if she hadn't been captain. The concept of having her as a captain is one that I can support, but within the historical context it is difficult to believe. The bare set consisting only of chairs for the actors and a podium for the narrator had benefits and drawbacks. It functions with the suspensory ligament to attach and support the lens. The aqueous humor is a watery material between cornea and lens. The vitreous humor is gelatinous material within the eye.Focusing by the lens is called accommodation, focusing in humans is done by changing the shape of lens with ciliary muscles. These muscles are part of the ciliary body. The ciliary muscles surround the lens they are attached to the lens by suspensory ligaments. When distant objects are viewed, the ciliary muscles relax, putting tension on the suspensory ligaments. The taut ligaments pull the lens, causing it to become thinner. Nearby objects cause the ciliary muscle to contract, reducing the tension on the suspensory ligaments and allowing the lens to assume a thicker shape. The cornea bends light but the lens finishes focusing. As a person ages, their ability to focus their lens decreases. Glasses can correct for this loss of focusing ability. Focusing occurs when the eye is too long and the plane of focus is in front of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. ##ymbolism In A Raisin In The Sun, By Lorraine Hansberry... One of the best ways to enhance writing is to use symbolism. Two authors, Lorraine Hansberry and Harriet Jacobs, are good examples of using symbolism in writing. A Raisin in the Sun is a play written by Lorraine Hansberry about the life of the Youngers family, a black family consisting of Mama, the mother of the family, her children Walter and Beneatha, and Walter's wife and son. This family struggles in a city of hateful white people that wish to crush their dreams and spirit. They experiences lots of tension with the arrival of a check for ten thousand dollars. The money is wanted by everyone in the family, each of which would rather do what they want to do, but Mama, the head of the family decides what to do with the money, creating even more tension among them. The other book, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, is an autobiography about Harriet Jacobs, a slave girl, who suffered before her master for most of the first twenty years of her life, before escaping with her children to the northern states and freeing herself. In both books, the author is very good at using symbolism to enhance their writing. In their literary works, Lorraine Hansberry and Harriet Jacobs use symbolism to increase the meaning of their text by using them to give better explanations, to intensify illustration, and to make comparisons between objects. First, Jacobs and Hansberry both use symbolism by using it to compare objects in their works. Jacob and Hansberry use symbolism to give the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Differences Between Henry Clay And The Old Guard Dbq Years prior to 1860, the States were able to make acceptable compromises all thanks to Henry Clay. The Old Guard and Clay's beliefs stated that the union should be preserved no matter what the cost. This belief system however was not passed down and abandon throughout generations, and thus the New Guard was born. This generation also brought along a wave of abolitionists and rising political tension, and by 1860 the ability to be able to compromise was terminated. One determining factor that I was alluding to earlier was the death of Henry Clay and the Old Guard. Clay was a phenomenal political figure. He proposed the American System and and was a prominent leader in creating compromises from 1820–1850. His focus was to unify the states and to preserve the Union. In document A you can see the frustration that Clay experiences when he proclaims "I for one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Webster knew that slavery was a hot topic in this time period and tried to do a favor for the north by trying to benefit the south. In document D he speaks up about the runaway slave issue that the south was facing. He could be inferred that the Bloodhound Bill is not effective. In his eyes he knew that abolitionism was a catalyst for civil war and was only trying to avoid it. The House of Representatives were in favor of the Old Guard's beliefs. Document C provides evidence that congress was ordered to not speak about slavery. They were doing this outrageous act in order to "restore tranquillity to the public mind." It is clear that abolitionists were creating a problem. On the completely opposite side of the spectrum was the Anti slavery society in document B. This society were trying to speak out for a good reason, however in hindsight they were only pushing toward more sectionalism. They use harsh language like "MAN STEALER" in order to push their ideals onto indifferent people. They were trying to raise attention on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
