Equality from 1648–21st century
Throughout the history of Europe since 1648, many different changes have occurred concerning the
treatment of European people, through social, cultural, and political movements. Although it was not
a quick and easy process, by the 21st century, European people were mostly able to freely
participate in society by making decisions for the people, as opposed to a higher power ruling ones
life. Different events, such as the industrial revolution, the holocaust of World War II, and the spread
of communism have aided in gaining individual's freedoms so that all people are treated as equal
humans. The industrial revolution of 1760 demonstrated that European people, as well as women,
did not have a voice of matter in working conditions, hours, or the good that was being
manufactured. Treatment of workers was absolutely atrocious. Children were being placed in
factories, often being given the most dangerous jobs such as crawling into small spaces of
machinery to fix broken components, due to the fact that they were small, and could complete these
tasks, frequently resulting in death. The government showed little to no care for people, which
presented the idea of dehumanization. Women were shunned from jobs because during this time,
men were thought to have the obligation to be the head of the household, and the idea of a woman

argue is to this day–a harbor for convictions that nurtured what encompassed government–

Do the three core concepts of social movement theory–framing, political opportunities, and
mobilizing structures– provide an adequate account of the emergence of social movements?
Social movements have been a fundamental part of civilization's freedom. It is the bridge that takes
social grievances to the polity. Without this connection, people would not be able to express their
concerns freely. A social movement is much more than just spontaneous uprisings with no
organization; they are a complex organization that require detailed analysis to understand where
they come from. In this sense, I would be devoting my time to analyze the different factors that
cause the rise and development of social movements. I will consider a social movement "as
organized yet informal social entities that are engaged in extra–institutional conflict that is oriented
towards a goal. These goals can be either aimed at a specific and narrow policy or be more broadly
aimed at cultural change" (Christiansen, 1, 2009). Consequently, it would be naïve to propose any
explanation that relies solely on a single factor as the reason for the emergence of a social
movement. Any meaningful analysis here has to happen through the understanding of multiple
factors (both endogenous and exogenous), as well as their interaction, which collectively culminate
in any given type of social movement. More importantly, it is key to understand that every social

The New Left was a political movement in the 1960s and the 1970s. This movement consisted of
agitators, educators, youth and others who wanted reform especially on issues such as social justice,
abortion, gender roles, drugs, gay rights, and questions of social class (Klimke, 2). Thinkers such as
C. Wright Mills, Herbert Marcuse (also referred to as the "Father of the New Left") and groups such

Not only are both terms highly similar, but Hanisch used this work to influence her own (The
Personal is Political). Mills' work, for instance, highlights the connection between personal
experience and societal influence. In other words, his work describes the ability to recognize societal
standards or circumstances and how they influence individuals on a personal level. In a sense,

The idea of the protest was originally simply to stage a small demonstration in hopes that the media

14. Paxton Boys The Paxton Boys were a group of Scot–Irish settlers who were upset by disputes
over the western land in the colonies. In 1763, in western Pennsylvania, they ended up killing about
twenty Indians in the land dispute. The Quaker government of Pennsylvania attempted to punish the
people involved with the incident, but this led to them marching on Philadelphia in protest. This
group and the event/Indian massacre that they caused was very important to the colonies because it
was the first conflict over western territories in the colony and, in sorts, helped lead to the
Proclamation of 1763. It was also a good example of racial hatred in the colonies– even though the
Quakers were very tolerant of the Indian people, this immigrant group, the Paxton boys, weren't, and

When IQ tests first came about, many of the questions were designed based on American Culture
and discriminated highly against immigrants. It was commonly believed during that time period that
those particular groups of individuals were not well suited for success and were denied a higher
education. Similar to that of the World war years, children in the 21st century who have English as a
second language struggle on standardized exams because of linguistic or cultural differences. Some
standardized tests are primarily normed for middle to upper class cocasions making it extremely
difficult for those who do not fit within the "norm" to do well. Besides for the fact that these exams
aren't properly normed for the overall population taking them, a lack of funding is also a
predominant reason for poor testing results. Other issues such as learning disabilities like ADHD,

children are required to take these standardized tests in order for the school to get funding from the

Nowadays, many people are claiming that the old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but

until 1898. In 1898, there were reports in which stated that Armour & Co. supplied rotten canned
beef to the U.S. Army. This occurred during the Spanish American War. Many troops became ill as a

The purpose of this essay will be to determine whether New social movements or New politics
parties are more effective with bringing about change with a focus on green politics. I will look at
the structures of a political system that enables Green political parties to gain representation. Often
Green political parties start from grassroots social movements, which can make it difficult to
separate the influence that they have on policy change from the movement. Traditionally New
political parties, with the exception of Green and new religious parties (Boyeller, 2014), struggle to
gain and retain some control in government due to the resilience of traditional parties (Siavelis
2006). This occurs due to New political parties being largely based on only a few issues (Siavelis,
2006), which then becomes irrelevant when the issue is absorbed by the traditional party.
In contrast, Greens parties often take on range of post–materialist issues (Kitschelt 1993) in addition
to ecological issues. Greens parties are considered some of the 'most successful in terms of
persistence and sustainability' (Boyeller 2014) of the New politics parties. However their success is
somewhat dependent whether the system favours a two–party system or proportional multi–partism.

rights movement and the women's liberation movement. The Feminist perspective and its effects on
society therefore influenced criminologists to become concerned with the ignorance of women

Political change is when there is a change in leadership or a change in policy of a government due to
a significant disruption such as a social movement or revolution. If the citizens of a country feel that
they are being treated unjustly by their rulers, and the rulers think that their ways of governing are
satisfactory then a discord is struck and conflict arises between them (Study blue). The main causes
of this discord are mostly social issues such as hunger, racism, climate change etc. and/or economic
issues like unemployment, poverty, inflation (Study blue). The people frustrated by these social and

Social movements have been seen as large informal organizations that have put more attention on
areas that dealt with political and social issues and in doing so started revolutions that were focused
on making changes that were important to their societies. (Wiki) Two of the social movements that I
have decided to focus on were in one way or another successful in their social movements were
Iceland and Chile compared to the other nations that had revolutions and had not really succeeded.
The reason that some social movements are more successful than others is that everyone within the
community come together to unit in a common goal. They use whatever resources that are available
to them, whether it be the media, Facebook, Twitter, or a grassroots effort of interaction with each
individual person spreading what they hope to change. Everyone comes together to find a better
solution to the problems that they want fixed and at times hope it is accepted by the government for
more permanent change. Other reasons that social movements were successful was how the
community went about implementing the change. A social movement can be as simple as protesting

She had accomplished many things throughout her life. We will highlight some of the main areas
where she impacted people with her brave contributions. According to biography.com, New York
had just begun to mention the abolition of slavery in 1799, but this did not happen until 1827 and it
was not soon enough for Truth. She decided to run away with her infant baby. She left her other
children behind. Soon after Truth found out that her son which was 5 years old was illegally sold to
a slave owner in Alabama, she then had the help of the family she was staying with and took the
case to court where she won the case and was the first African American woman to win a case
against a white man. In 1843, Truth named herself Sojourner Truth because she devoted her life to
Methodism and anti–slavery. Truth then went on to join a group named the Northampton
Association of Education which was funded by abolitionists and people who were also fighting for
the rights of women and slavery. That is where Truth gave her first speech called "Aint I a Woman"
She continued to have rallies of large crowds where she directly would speak about problems and

Eugenics was the hugely popular political movement that began with the in depth study of human
heredity. During the 1920s through the 1940s it was seen as a progressive and state–of–the–art– way
of thinking, which fueled its popularity. The technical definition of eugenics is the science of
improving a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable
heritable characteristics. The debate that surrounded eugenics and still does today is the morality of
creating someone that only possesses "desirable" characteristics. Who gets to decide what is deemed
desirable? The term "Eugenics" was termed by Francis Galton in 1883 and stems from the Greek
language meaning "well bred". Galton was inspired to research the breeding of humans mainly by
his cousin Charles Darwin but also by the middle classes of England and the United States. Galton's
studied revolved around variations in the human population through classifications such as race.

Summary Political movements have changed and developed over time. Many have survived the
decades, and are just as alive now as they were fifty years ago. The rights of women and people of
color sparked movements dating back to the 1960s and earlier, and both are back in the spotlight
today. Environmental activism became an important issue in the 1970s, and is still a concern today,
although to a lesser extent. Although the gay rights discussion at the national level began following
the Stonewall Riots in 1969, and Pride Parades began popping up nationwide shortly thereafter,
LGBT individuals had no legal rights or protections before the increased activism of this decade
(Dreier, 2015). Peace movements are also found in many different time periods, reflecting an ever–
prevalent anti–war sentiment that becomes visible whenever our country engages in foreign conflict.
Due to the extended nature of political movements, political songs tend to have relevance extending
far beyond their release date. While Sam Cooke's anti–segregation rhetoric is outdated, the
references to institutional racism are not, and the hope that changes will be made to bring an end to
racial disparity is perennial. A change may have come, but much more change is still needed. Leslie
Gore's "You Don't Own Me" could just as easily be an anthem for women today as it was in 1963.
