Comparing Evil in Emerson, Hawthorne, and Melville Essay
Lionel Trilling once said, "A proper sense of evil is surely an attribute of a great writer." (98–99)
Although he made the remark in a different context, one would naturally associate Hawthorne and
Melville with the comment, while Emerson's might be one of the last names to mind. For the
modern reader, who is often in the habit of assuming that the most profound and incisive
apprehension of reality is a sense of tragedy, Emerson seems to have lost his grip. He has often been
charged with a lack of vision of evil and tragedy. Yeats, for example, felt that Whitman and Emerson
"have begun to seem superficial, precisely because they lack the Vision of Evil" (qtd. in Matthiessen
181).
There is no doubt that Emerson was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

There are Chaos and the Dark, but man can soar over them by "unfurling beautiful wings" and
become "an angel of wisdom." (Emerson, "American Scholar" 1083). It is a duty of Man Thinking
to guide men by "showing the facts amidst appearances" and accepting "poverty and solitude." He
can and should convert a mulberry leaf into satin and sometimes evil itself can be a guide for good;
"Drudgery, calamity, exasperation, want, are instructors in eloquence and wisdom." ("American
Scholar" 1082) Moral and natural evil appear in experience but they are not ultimate realities, only
relative and transitory.
But Emerson's belief and reality often clashed head–on with each other. Emerson knew the ideal
often exists only in thought and lived by and large only in the mind. In his later essay "Experience,"
his doubt is conveyed quite clearly. In this essay he wanted to reaffirm the hope of humanity and
presumably he didn't intend to express such a feeling as frustration, but it is certainly there. The
essay opens with a tone of bewilderment:
Where do we find ourselves? In a series of which we do not know the extremes, and believe that it
has none. We wake and find ourselves on a stair, there are stairs below us, which we seem to have
ascended; there are stairs above us, many a one, which go upward and out of sight. But the Genius
which according to the old belief stands at the door by which

Comparing Kami Garcia's Use Of The Supernatural In Good...
"Double double toil and trouble." Those words are said In act 1 by what people call now a days,
witches. The supernatural are everywhere we go. Books, movies, tv shows, they are looming in the
back of our minds at night but especially in the book, Macbeth. Birds may not be supernatural but
they are also mentioned many times in both Macbeth and Beautiful
Creatures. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare and Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia, Good vs
Evil is shown through the use of the supernatural beings and internal conflicts. The Supernatural has
been alive for many years, even in the 1600's there were things like witches and ghouls. The
supernatural is shown throughout the play Macbeth; the three witches or the ghost of Banquo could

He doesn't know whether to be good or evil. Just like Macbeth, Lena is having the same conflict.
She doesn't want to use her magic a lot otherwise she will become corrupt. Also, she doesn't want
her lover to get injured. She is stuck between protecting someone she loves and turning evil.
She doesn't want to lose her boyfriend to the evil that looms in her world however if she doesn't stop
she will be trying to protect him from herself. It seems as though they face some pretty gruesome
inner conflicts. One of these characters turns good but the other seems to have gone down the wrong
path. Both of these characters are fighting their inner demons. "The right thing and the easy thing
are never the same." This quote is said in the movie Beautiful creatures where Lena must make a
decision to save her boyfriend. To save him she must sacrifice herself. We can see that in both
Macbeth and Beautiful Creatures, both characters must make a difficult decision. Whether it is for

Comparing Evil In American Sniper And Run All Night
The necessary evil is when you have to bad things for greater good. The four texts that have studied
this are American Sniper by Clint Eastwood, Run all Night by Jaume Collet, Batman begins by by
Christopher Nolan, Slumdog millionaire by Danny Boyle. These films describe real evil in it. Evil is
necessary when preventing further evil. This was seen in American Sniper. In the scene Chris Kyle
was staring around with his sniper at top of building. While he saw one woman with a boy coming

Green Gulch: The True Meaning Of Evil
Evil is a natural occurrence in the world and has many different implications. The true meaning of
evil is shown in the pieces Green Gulch by Loren Eiseley, Genesis 3, and Lance Morrow's essay. In
the piece Green Gulch the true meaning of evil is shown when the older boys beat up the younger
boy who is innocently watching them. "I do not know who threw the stone first...who struck me
first, or even who finally, among that ring of vicious faces, put me on my feet ...and said, roughly,
'There's your road, kid, follow the street lamps. They'll take you home." It may seem that the young
boy was only hurt physically but as a matter of fact he was also hurt mentally. The true meaning of
evil is shown here when they beat the kid and send him on his

Comparing The State Of Mississippi: The Line Between Good...
The topic of good and evil first arose in the book of Genesis and whether an act is good or evil is
still contentious in today's society. An individual's perception of what is good and evil is always
subjective, as it will have been shaped by religious beliefs and cultural influences. Despite the
differing views that arise, good and evil are polar opposites and have been symbolised as being
dualistic, such as the battle between light and dark or God and the Devil. Burning Mississippi, 1988,
a film based around a FBI investigation into the murders of three civil rights workers in the U.S.
state of Mississippi in 1964, clearly demonstrates how the line between good and evil is in fact
permeable and, depending on the situational pressures, that almost ... Show more content on

This act of evil demonstrates how the line between good and evil is permeable as it is situational
forces that induce him into choosing an evil outcome. As one of the town's police officers he would
normally have been a righteous person who chooses to use his free will in a positive manner.
However, due to the nature of Mississippi in 1964, with the extensive oppression of the coloured
(Negro) people, he was undoubtedly pressured into the actions taken. Mrs Pell, another movie
character, demonstrates this when she spoke to FBI Agent Rupert Anderson. She wept saying,
"Hatred isn't something you're born with. It gets taught. At school, they said segregation what's said
in the Bible. Genesis 9, verse 27. Seven years of age, you get told it enough times, you believe it."
This dialogue is evidence of the extreme situational forces that were present. The actions of Frank
Bailey, in the murdering of the three civil rights workers unquestionably demonstrates how, due to
the circumstances, a normally good individual can be induced into committing an act of

Backyard Blues Analysis
In Trethewey's "Native Guard," graves symbolize the futility of mankind's efforts to conceal its evils
and of failure to combat the racist system put in place by white America. For years, Trethewey's
mother fought to protect her daughter from the hatred and prejudice in America. Her protest against
the hatred of America was snuffed out by abusive partners and by the nascent racism of America. In
the poem "Graveyard Blues,"she describes the atmosphere of the graveyard as blues–y and dreary.
She "wander[s] now among the names of the dead: My mother's name, stone pillow for my head;"
her mother's name now only a marker of her lifetime of suffering (Trethewey 8). Not only a problem
in Trethewey's time, racism and inherent discrimination were an issue for even the African American
heroes of the Civil War, the Native Guard receive no recognition from the historians of the fort or
the Daughters of the Confederacy. In the poem "Elegy for the Native Guards, Trethewey states that
there are "no names carved for the Native Guards– 2nd Regiment, Union men, black phalanx. What
is monument to their legacy?" (Trethewey 44) They receive no honorable grave. They receive the
most barbaric of burial rites, doomed to have "fish dart among their bones." (Trethewey 44) The
bodies of the native guard are cast out of sight into the ocean, neglected in an attempt to forget the
evils committed against them. Their forgotten and neglected grave symbolizes the futility of fighting
against the racism of

Compare And Contrast Puritan And John Edwards
Pastors have used the "fire and brimstone" method for centuries, scaring congregations into
obedience with the threat of being sent to an indescribably painful realm after death, usually referred
to as "hell". Pastor John Edwards took this method to a new extreme; he terrified some people so
much that they went as far as to commit suicide during his sermons. One particular sermon
combines some of the principles of Puritan faith, as well as his personal opinions, with what is
commonly considered the most vivid description of hell ever written. His sermon represents the
Puritan belief system in some respects, but not all, which can be seen by identifying and comparing
the main points of the sermon and other similarities in his sermon to known Puritan values. John
Edwards actually gives hope to his congregation with his views, while Puritanical views are even
harsher.
One of the most central beliefs in Puritan faith is that human nature is evil. They constantly need to
access themselves and make up for their sins. That is a point that is strongly emphasized throughout
the sermon. In fact, even the first sentence brings this belief into light, claiming, "natural
men...deserved the fiery pit." He says that their wickedness is making them heavy like lead,
weighing them down into hell. In his opinion they have done nothing to appease God's anger and
gain his grace, which is, in Puritan faith, the only way to be saved from the pits of hell. He describes
God's anger as "great waters

Comparing The School For Good And Evil
In this fairy tale, The School for Good and Evil, written by Soman Chainani, a mysterious School
Master appears every four years in a town called Gavaldon and kidnaps two children. He brings
them to a magical place where students train to become princesses and witches, princes and
warlocks, and they all graduate into fairy tales. Sophie dreams of being kidnapped into the School of
Good, and her best friend Agatha seems a natural fit for the School of Evil. They never dream of
what happens next: they end up in the wrong schools. When Sophie meets a gorgeous prince, she
has no intention of going home. Agatha, on the other hand, is desperate to return home. The two best
friends follow their fairy tale and must face the most terrifying part of this fantasy: The End.
The story all starts a long, long time ago where Good and Evil are still balanced before Evil rose
above Good and The School For Good and Evil is established. Two brothers are controlling a magic

Analysis Of A Good Man Is Hard To Find
In O'Connor's short story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the setting contributes to the reader's
understanding of Bailey's out of tune family. We can assume the story took place in the post–war
mid century era given the fact that O'Connor wrote this story in 1953 and when the grandmother
says, "the way Europe acted you would think we were made of money" (O'Connor). During the
1940's and 1950's the backbone of the American dream was "hard work, family values, and hope"
(Desmond). Families from back then were big on respect and took family time seriously. When
comparing a traditional mid century family to Bailey's family there is a distinct difference that
allows us to label them as a dysfunctional family. Although we do not get a look into the family's
work ethic, we do get a close enough look to see their lack of family values. Throughout the story
there are several times where the family reveals that they are clearly flawed with the words they
choose to say or simply with their actions.
One of the characters we see this most in is the daughter June Star. In the beginning of the story she
talks about the grandmother in a mocking way, saying that grandmother could not bear to stay at
home by herself and that she had to go everywhere they go. A more obvious time she reveals her
ugly attitude is when Red Sam's wife compliments June Star and asks if she would like to be her
little girl. June Star responds with "No I certainly wouldn't, I wouldn't live in a broken–down place
like this for a minion bucks!" (O'Connor). No one bothers to notice how embarrassing her remark is
or bothers to scold her but the grandmother. It is not only June Star who shows a lack of values but
we also see that Bailey allows his children to dictate his decisions. After Bailey tells not only the
two kids but the grandmother as well that they will not be making any stops, the two children begin
to throw a ugly fit, while the grandmother continuously tries to change his mind. We gather from
this incident that the children and grandmother lack reverence for the father, and by Bailey giving
in, he shows that he lacks authority. Normally, a father is supposed to be the head of the household
and have the last word. "The Bible is quite clear in

Comparing Kant's View Of Hobbes On Good And Evil
Good and Evil
Hobbes's account of good is something people desires, and his account of evil is something people
avoid such as death. So, based on this information on this subject Hobbes's view is very different
from other philosophers since he believes in the greatest evil instead of believing in the greatest
good. According to Hobbes's view and the points he made, it shows a different perspective aspect of
seeing human's nature like how he describes as "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short" and I think
his point holds a reasonable ground. Lastly, I will explain why his good and evil is a part of this
world.
To begin with, Hobbes's account on good and evil is very different than any other philosophers
because he believes in the greatest evil when they do not think the greatest evil exist. Hobbes does
not believe in the greatest good as the other philosophers because he does not consider that there is a
god or anything that will give people some happiness and pleasure. Because I think that Hobbes
believes good comes based on a desire within a person. Based on the "Leviathan.", Hobbes states
that men's desire is called good and people's hate is considered evil. He believes that good and evil
comes from people's nature, especially when it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

motivation is what counts. He means by doing your moral duty because it is the right thing to do and
it is an obligation that is required, and you should not do your moral responsibility for the sake of
achieving rewards or for any self–interest. For example, Kant used the prudent shopkeeper and the
principled shopkeeper to elaborate his idea of what is required to establish an absolute objective,
universal morality. He expects everyone to be like the principled shopkeeper who kept his price fair

Comparing Good And Evil In Greek Mythology
The theme most represented in greek mythology are the comparisons between the Gods and human
nature also explanations for the unknown. For example most titans are mythical beings created to
represent something unknown (say the ocean) and give it meaning (the tiedes clash and waves form
because oceanus demands it, etc). Another example is the God Aphrodite whom, much like humans,
participated in strategic and barbaric warfare. The gods have qualities of human mortals, with a
twist. Most are related in their own manner to the ways of human life. Consider the story of
pandora's box. Pandora had a box full of life's misfits; Anger, deceit, heartache, betrayal and many
other entities of evil. All of those negative entities fled the box, yet hope remained, to be drawn from
whenever facing these negative energies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Based on the story "Beowulf" presents good and evil in this Anglo–Saxon, which is old

kills humans to end his violence to protect Herot orders from the king. Beowulf himself embodies
all that is good, but it's often expressed through his super–human capabilities. For example, he and
his only good soldier Wiglaf are the only ones who rush to help humanity or another character
without concern for their own safety.

The monsters, including Grendel, his mother, and the dragon, all embody evil,
and in fighting and defeating them, Beowulf is working to save not only the monster's victims
but the whole of humanity.
Anglo–Saxon does compare with Beowulf the story, such as old english language. For
example, Beowulf fits with bravery, truth, honor, loyalty and duty. These were the warriors, the
ones the rest of the culture looked up to. Bravery was mandatory, whether it was in facing a
battle or fighting a monster. The Anglo–Saxons gated the truth, like Beowulf does when he tells
about his memory of the swimming match with his childhood friend Breca, their boats had to be
rooted in the truth. Beowulf and his men (soldiers) was honor by everything. They wanted to
show their honor by their king, and backing up their boats as well in their treatment of each

The Problem Of Suffering Is Not Limited
The problem of suffering is not limited to human society. The awareness of evils, present not only in
human society but also in the physical and biological levels, is raised among scientists and
theologians who participate in theology–science dialogue. Not only animals but also plants
experience sufferings and pains to a certain extent. On the physical level, the increase of entropy
according to the 2nd law of thermodynamics is regarded as analogous to the notion of evil on the
physical level. Even though the prevalence of evil in the world raises a question as to the goodness
of a god in any religion, "The problem is particularly pressing for Abrahamic faiths that insist on
God's fairness, love, and goodness." In that vein, Veli–Matti Kärkkäinen appositely and acutely
points out, "Rampant suffering and acts of evil in the world, both in relation to humanity (moral
evil) and to nature (natural evil), constitute a major atheistic challenge concerning the existence of
God." In this paper, rather than presenting a full–scale theodicy, I engage with the problem of
theodicy through careful comparative study between Wolfhart Pannenberg's and Catherine Keller's
theodical arguments in the context of their dialogue with modern physics and biology. Pannenberg
sees that theology and natural science are to be placed in hypothetical consonance , whereas Keller
takes an assimilationist approach to theology–science dialogue. The divergence of their

Comparing the Evil of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
"At the heart of William Shakespeare's Macbeth is an examination of the nature of evil and it's many
faces and facets"(Cathell 119). The principal evil characters in the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth,
are both evil, but the manifestation of evil is different in each.
Macbeth's evil is a dynamic character trait. He begins the play as a celebrated hero, loyal to his
friends and dedicated to his king. He is strong and noble, a man to be admired by his audience.
Macbeth and Banquo are visited by the three witches, who promise him that he will be king. This

That no compunctious visitings of nature/ Shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between/ The

For all the sound and fury, Lady Macbeth's evil signifies nothing. She has no goal that requires such
sinister behaviour. When she learns of the witches' promise, Duncan is nothing to her but a suitable
victim. Her true goal is not to gain the throne. Her motive is only to increase her personal perception
of her power.
It is interesting to note the importance of gender in the personifications of evil in Macbeth. Lady
Macbeth is as obsessed with her gender as her evil. When she implores evil to "unsex" her, to take
her "woman's breasts for gall" she reveals the sense of powerlessness and weakness she feels. Being
a woman makes her dependant on her husband for her social

Rousseau and Golding are both philosophers and are both known for different similar topics.
Rousseau is known for his first book, A Discourse on the Sciences and Arts, about his philosophies
saying that man is good. Golding is known for his bestselling novel he ever wrote, Lord of The
Flies, also expressing his philosophies saying that man is evil. Rousseau and Golding have many
contrasts that fight against each other's philosophies but was never spoken to each other because
they lived in different time periods. My view on the spirit of a human without order is that humans
are all good even though some don't show it. Jean–Jacques Rousseau's philosophies were published
in 1762 to explain the good of man. His philosophies explained reasoning is what causes societies to
corrupt the good of man and humans are just naturally good by themselves. Also Rousseau's beliefs
show that humans are good physically and mentally also believes," modern man's enslavement to his
own needs was responsible for all sorts of societal ills,"

of the ideas of modern philosophies saying that if humans didn't have a governments or societies,

Jackson's use of describing the town, the friendly language among the villagers and the presentation

the characters ordinary appearance and demeanor, there may be a pure evil lingering inside waiting

rest of the villagers and even by loved ones. This adherence to ritual and the willingness to blindly

Othello, by William Shakespeare has been studied throughout the ages after I studied the play I have
decided that I believe that Iago was not sane, he was a psychopath(a person suffering from chronic
mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behaviour). I have found that after searching
through many critics with a various amount of opinions there were many that disagree and agree
with my hypothesis. I have decided to discuss "Iago the Psychopath (1978)" by Fred West and "The
Apologetics of Evil : The cast of Iago (2009)" by Richard Raatzsch. Both critics have contrasting
opinions on whether Iago was not sane and was a psychopath or is Iago is sane and had motives that
drove him to do what he did. They also have a 31 year time period difference from when they were
written in which again makes them contrast as well.
Fred West claimed that Iago was a psychopath and said William Shakespeare "constructed Iago so
that he fulfills the clinical profile of the psychopath". West believes that Iago fit the profile of what a
psychopath clinically is defined by, which provides evidence for my hypothesis by saying that Iago
was not sane but was infact a psychopath. He also said that Iago used "people ruthlessly with no

I disagree with this point because, even though Iago does explain a possible "motive" on why he
wishes to hurt Othello, it is to benefit Roderigo who is at first suspicious of whether he does want to
harm Othello, rather than explaining why Iago is willing to go such drastic and dangerous lengths to
hurt him, and I believe it is unlikely a sane person would go to such lengths just over a promotion
and that Iago was in fact

Comparing Rowe's Argument Of God And Evil
God is Evil
In this paper, I will carefully reconstruct Rowe's argument by: identifying the premises and
conclusion, testing the validity and soundness according to Rowe's argumentation, determining what
the best objection is, and finally discerning whether the opposition is truly the best counterargument.
Rowe's argument originates from the argument of evil, which is, if there is an omniscient being, who
is in fact, then why does this being allow meaningless suffering to exist ? Therefore, there is no God
because gratuitous suffering does exist. In this argument, Rowe finds the definition for God and Evil
within this argument. In Rowe's case, God means a wholly, good omniscient being, and Evil
means(well in God's case) the action of not doing anything when animal or people are in need of
such an awesome being. Rowe's argument is pretty much the same as the argument of evil, except he
applied a few conditions, which is what he summarized from the evil argument himself . The
conditons: If there is some greater good, it is only obtainable if God permits it. Or, there is a greater
good, that God permits either, or some evil equally bad or worse. Finally, gratititous suffering is
preventable only if omniscient God permits some evil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since, this was not properly address this is the current best objection to Rowe's argument. The
question remain unanswered by his argument: If we do have free will, is that the reason that God
cannot stop evil ? However, this is not an adepuate response to Rowe's argument, the best response
is simply that God is evil. Rowe dives into himself in his second condition:"...or some evil equally
bad or worse.." . The best counterargument: Since there is suffering in this world that an which a
perfect being could have stopped, and it was not stopped, therefore this perfect godly being is

Comparing God's Centrum: The Relation Between Good And Evil
For evil to possess possibility, which is a positive existence in the context of theodicy, it has to
manifest separately to God. God's essence, found in his centrum is a united manifestation of his
ground and existence, light or dark. God's centrum is entirely indestructible and cannot be separated
from his being. As human beings are created in the image of God, they possess all that God does but
they cannot be analogous to God. Schelling wrote that the unity that is inseparable in God is
separable in the human being. In man therefore, there is the possibility of good and evil, whereas in
God there is not (82). Man is able to manifest unlimited possibility because built–in to their design
is the light and also the dark, both order and chaos. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Schelling wrote that the raising of the deepest centrum into light does not occur in any other known
creature except mankind . Nonetheless, because peoples' principles are severable, they can be
different from God, and this represents peoples' spirit. Human beings darkness is transfigured not
light, although not completely. Schelling names this tension in human being's their Selfhood.
According to Schelling, a human being is an egoistical, particular being distinguished from God .
Selfhood and a person's spirit are united so long as selfhood stays unified with understanding and
light. Selfhood, similar to spirit, is different from the ruling principle of light as well as the
grounding principle of darkness. Selfhood can cause disruption by pushing the self–will away from
one's centrum, where it really is subordinated to universal will . The instant this centrum is disturbed
and also the equilibrium and ground and existence, corruption and unrest starts to develop. An
individuals' centrum where self will dwells eternally, is connected to the universal will of God. This
is because self–will owes its formation to that universal will. It is not possible to differentiate
darkness and light from one another. They are equip–primordial. Rational subordination is equally
hopeless due to the unity in God. These principles are severable in people,

Comparing Nietzsche's Beyond Good And Evil
Quite possibly the most poignant and eye–opening relationship of the entire play of Hamlet and his
mother, becomes sabotaged by Hamlet internalizing Catholic driven dogma. People often resort to
using religion as a moral compass to give their lives structure and personal guidance. Friedrich
Nietzsche, a prominent figure associated with the existential movement states in his book, Beyond
Good and Evil, that "Perhaps one the most solemn concepts which have occasioned the most strife
and suffering, the concepts 'God' and 'sin', will one day seem to us of no more importance than a
child's toy and a child's troubles" (82). Clearly, Nietzsche actively rejects the concept of committing
sins, which is the binding force in most religions. To begin, ... Show more content on

Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man." (King James Bible,
Corinthians. 11. 8–9). Women are clearly subordinate to men from a biblical perspective and Hamlet
adopts this notion upon evaluation of his mother's personal choices. As a woman, Gertrude is unable
to be seen for who she truly is. Rather, her worth as a person is observed through the lens of
whatever male partner she has in her life. Claudius, as a husband, has power over his mother and is
able to stain her, giving her shame and brings dishonour to the kingdom. Hamlet also addresses
honour within his soliloquy. Despite the two playing equal parts in the relationship, it is Gertrude
who is Hamlet sees as scandalous and a disgrace because of the marriage. This all adds up to Hamlet
vilifying his own mother by prioritizing God's values over respecting the only person in his life who
he truly loves. This sacrifice massively contributes to his downfall. Thus, through Hamlet
implementing Catholic morals in his life in an effort to cope with his father's death, he deteriorates
the now dicey relationship with his mother and makes him responsible for his life's decline. PEE 4,

Comparing The School For Good And Evil By Soman Chainani
The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani was an exceptionally interesting book that
constantly kept me on my toes and anticipating what would happen next. Even though the main
characters themselves were not relatable, I could relate to many of the emotions that they felt
throughout the book. For example, when Agatha's mother sacrificed herself so that her daughter
could avoid facing execution with Tedros, I could imagine the turmoil that my mother felt when she
would sacrifice something important to her for the sake of my brother and I. Although the main plot
of the book and its characters was not something that I could really relate to, it still had many
symbols and themes that hit me hard when I encountered them. For example, at the

Everyone has evil inside of them, it is just a matter of how much evil is within each person. The

these stories known for their evil nature. Most short stories focus on the good in people, but

Pointer betrays Hulga's trust. After he takes Hulga's leg, Hulga feels stupid and defenseless, "'Give

gaining Hulga's trust and make her feel special.
Feeling special and liked is not something Hulga feels often and Manley uses this to his advantage.
After Manley betrays Hulga by stranding without her leg in the loft, she is in disbelief. Hulga does
not comprehend at first that Manley is a liar, but once she does she feels like a fool. Society has a
huge impact on everyone, but when people succumb to its pressure the true evils of human nature
emerge. Children who kill, succumbing to pressures of society, and betrayal are all pieces of human
nature that are evil. In The Veldt, the Hadley children show their evil side when they kill their
parents. Stoning their own community is the evil in The Lottery. In
Good Country People, Manley Pointer shows his evil side when he takes Hulga's leg.
The scariest about this kind of evil is that it is not seen on the outside of characters. To find the evil

The Importance Of Evil In Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness
The Evil within Us
With seven deadly sins and plenty other ruinous ones, we as individuals and as a society often fall
prey to detrimental temptations, causing us to question our true morality, our hidden nature. When
our restraints loosen and our faith shakes, we can seemingly revert back to savage ways, to violence,
to brutality. Although humanity has its share of shining moments, it also has those we deeply regret,
wish to forget, or continually sweep under the carpet. Likewise, in Heart of Darkness, author Joseph
Conrad establishes that all men have capacities for evil, despite appearances, suggesting that we are
all susceptible to corruption as we are continually forced to choose between two evils.
Conrad exposes mankind's underlying ugliness and brutality because, despite some's undying faith
in humanity, no one is a perfect saint. We are all guilty of the twinge of hatred whenever a car cuts
us off or when the waiter messes up the order. However, knowing the societal and physical
consequences for acting on such hatred, we typically refrain or convert it into something more
positive, such as work or fitness. But, when that hatred becomes unrestrained and unfiltered, we too
have the potential to injure, to kill, or even to massacre. In the Rolling Stone's "Sympathy for the
Devil," writers Jagger and Richards go even further to deem that "every cop is a criminal and all the
sinners saints," suggesting in the song that even if we do not knowingly commit evil deeds, our

One example of this goodness is when he decides to let the evil and corrupt Gollum live, out of pity
for him, in the dark caves under the mountain. Bilbo could have easily slain the horrid creature
mainly because of the ring, which he was wearing at that time, gave him the power of invisibility.
Instead, he risked his life to let the Gollum live by quickly jumping past the evil creature, thereby
escaping death of either character. Gandalf, in a later narrative, lectures Frodo by praising Bilbo's act
of pity upon Gollum. Gandalf's words were, "Pity? It was pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy;
not to strike without need. And he has been well rewarded Frodo." For Gollum, later in the novel,
saved Frodo from becoming possessed by the Ring of power. "Many that live deserves death. And
some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in
judgement..." (Wood, 208)
Another form of goodness that is displayed throughout "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" is
Bilbo and Frodo's actions of self–sacrifice. In "The Hobbit" there are two instances in which villains
caught the dwarves, Bilbo's fellow adventurers. Instead of fleeing their enemies, Bilbo risked his life
to save the dwarves from the clutches of evil. One instance of this is when a clan of unusually large
spiders captured Bilbo's companions and planned to eat them.

Comparing Nietzsche's Beyond Good And Evil

master morality and slave morality. In the lecture we discussed Nietzche's fatalism he believed that
events people are fated, so each individual is fated to either have a master or slave type morality.
The master morality is the morality of the people, who are strong willed people. The 'good' is the

of the master morality is dignity, bravery, honesty and sense of self–worth. That is to say that it takes

But whenever the locks and chains of law and order are cast off, and anarchy comes in, he shows

In today's world, human behaviours are driven by the civilization preset by society. In the rare
occasion that the civilization is taken away, humans unveil their true selves: animals with a savage

I thought, by myself'– The madness came into his eyes again.'I thought I might kill'" (51). This
quotation shows the change in character from innocent to savage. Jack, who started the story off as
simply a "selfish" British boy now has a "compulsion to kill". Jack's evil nature is starting to appear
and this nature is "swallowing him up". This connects to The Garden of Eden because in that story it
is shown that Adam and Eve start out innocent, but as time goes on their natural evil is released and
they sin by taking the apple from the tree. The allegory shown by Jack's action exhibits how this
story is an example of the unveiling of evil and savage when taken from civilization. The boy's
natural savage appears moments after they are released from civilization.
In Lord of The Flies, Golding also uses the characterization of Ralph to illustrate how the natural

Ralph is seen as the most innocent and civilized. From the moment they arrive on the island, Ralph

The Female Villain : Lady Tremaine
Disney has been influencing society for a long time. As a young person growing up with Disney,
they look for identities that they can connect to. Females will look up to the princess and males will
look up to the prince. But, who looks up to the villain? A traditional female villain may be seen as
the antagonist to the male hero counterpart. They are important to the plot of the story, as they are
the ones who manipulate other characters with their evil and wicked ways. Some serious women
whom can act very scary, very serious and very evil have been cast as, female villains. The female
villain in Cinderella, Lady Tremaine, shows the exact characteristics of the traditional female villain.
Comparing the traditional characteristics and actions of a traditional villain to Lady Tremaine it will
be shown that even though she may be beautiful she is still the root of evil in Cinderella. By
comparing specific identities and characteristics of the traditional female villain and explaining how
lady Tremaine is presented and the way she acts, it will be shown that she follows only some of the
traditional villain attributes. Also, that she pushes to be her own individual female villain when
comparing her to traditional Disney villains.
There are many things that evil villains are categorized as to doing, but there has always been an
underlying reason for this. Often, the villain will have a hardship of their own, before they change

Comparing Grendel's 'Good And Evil In Beowulf'
Good and evil are obliviously presented in Beowulf to the point that it's nearly impossible to

represents everything that goes against the Anglo–Saxons culture so that the audience also sees him

The traits, Grendel contains, that makes him scary and weird includes: Grendel attacking alone even
though the Anglo–Saxons, at the time, were accustomed to attacking in war bands, groups, or clans.
The fact that Grendel doesn't use any weapons at all to carry out his terror yet all of the warriors do.
(And some of them even named their weapons like Unferth who named his sword Hrunthing. The

Comparing The Searchers And Touch Of Evil
Despite the numerous differences between The Searchers (1956) and Touch of Evil (1958) the
overarching themes and character similarities of the films define them as comparable. Both were
created at the beginning of a phase which saw a great shift of cinematic themes within the industry.
While these themes were changing rapidly in the late 1950s, cinematic techniques were at times
innovative and at times adherent to classical traditions. This essay contextualises these films and
illustrates the differences and similarities in style and content.
Prior to WWII, most films centered on conventional protagonists – men and women who had
discernable motives and where everything was black or white. After the war a new set of viewer
ideals were established and Hollywood responded with the anti–hero; characters whose actions were

punishments of Caiaphas and the clergymen to reflect on his personal criticisms of human reason,

Examples Of Light In Macbeth
In the play 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare, light and dark imagery is used throughout the story in
order to show the difference and symbolism between good and evil. Light represents innocence,
truth and purity while darkness is used to represent cruelty, guilt and corruption. Towards the end of
the play, Shakespeare correlates the ideas of both lightness and darkness to portray life and death.
Ultimately, they represent good and evil. Shakespeare uses these two themes to drive the plot and
story forward in order to create conflict, twists and symbolism. In the first act of Macbeth, Malcolm

Using a candles flame as a representation of life and light. When Macbeth discovers the news about
the death of his wide, Lady Macbeth, he comes to realize that life itself is meaningless and pointless
as it does not last for a long time and can be easily blown out, referring back to the candle and its
vulnerability and fragility. "And all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Out,
out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the
stage, and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by and idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying
nothing" (Act 5 sc 5). Finally, the final use of imagery related to the theme of darkness and light is
seen when Macbeth begin his soliloquy by comparing his life to a lighted candle. The flame of the
candle is a metaphor for short life or sudden death and it demonstrates how our reality is nothing but
emptiness and darkness. Our very existence is merely just a brief moment of light and life, the flame
of a candle. We are surrounded by darkness before birth as well as after death. We believe that our
desires and ambition has great meaning, but once that candle is blown out, our aspirations are
meaningless. This is what Macbeth is referring to in the quote, telling us that he wishes that his
flame burns out as well; losing all interest in everything he aspired to be and earn.

Comparing Nietzsche's Beyond Good And Evil
In Beyond Good and Evil Nietzsche argues philosophy is a mere self–serving vanity on the part of
historical philosophers. Their explanations and truth–seeking are only their deepest desires of how
they wish things to have originated from. In this paper, I will try to explain what Nietzsche thought
philosophers were doing when constructing their theories and why his argument is a good one. In
Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche begins to ask why humans seek the truth and if it actually is a
benefit to our lives. Arguably, metaphysicians are trying to give things of higher value a separate
origin of their own, which many of the early philosophers believed could not come from our
physical world. Consequently instead of looking at the "seductive, ... Show more content on

The past philosophers made claims which they later tried to defend with logical reasoning. What
philosophers have done is to come up with an answer to a question which seems unanswerable
through their theories. These philosophers then create a whole list of reasons about why their
theories are correct. If someone comes along and begins to criticize their theories, they begin to
complain and start to argue why their theory is correct and cannot be wrong. These philosophers
begin to feel threatened in a way because on their theories begin to get attacked. Philosophers have
put immense time into their philosophical achievements and believe them to be the best way to get
to knowledge. Nietzsche says that what philosophers are expressing is "a type of involuntary and
self–conscious memoir." When philosophers create their theories, they make them according to what
they believe to be true or want to be true. It is actually a person's values which dictate their theories
and use the theories as a way to secretly express their inner views to the masses. Philosophers might
not realize they are doing this as they are making their theories with good intentions. As Nietzsche
says he does not believe that a "drive for knowledge" is what gave birth for philosophy. In the case
of Plato we could say that the reason he created the theory of the forms is because he values order.

Macbeth Essay
The word, "evil," is a widely used term which can specify something significant. In many instances,
the meaning of the term can be devalued through overuse and when it is used aimlessly. Evil has a
multitude of degrees and hierarchies which allow distinctions to be made. The hierarchies include
natural evils, man–made evils, wickedness, selfish wickedness, conscientious wickedness,
heteronomous wickedness, and malignant wickedness. Such degrees of evil is prominent in the play,
Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. The play, Macbeth, encompasses the story of an individual
named Macbeth and his rather violent journey to becoming king. As the play progresses, Macbeth

This is pronounced as both were conscious of their actions. The authors illuminate this notion
through the use of diction and characterization. Adolf Hitler was conscious of his actions and he
recognized that he had crossed a boundary. Rosenbaum states, "Evidence that Hitler was conscious
of his criminality includes his recurrent efforts to conceal his authorship of the Final Solution. In
effect, he was the first Holocaust denier, ostentatiously calling the Holocaust a 'rumor' in one of his
'Table Talk' conversations" (Rosenbaum, 121). Ron Rosenbaum utilizes diction as he uses words
such as "criminality," "authorship," and "ostentatiously" in order to portray Adolf Hitler as a wicked
murderer. Furthermore, Rosenbaum proclaims unlike a true believer, Adolf Hitler recognized that
his horrendous crimes exceeded a boundary. As a result, Adolf Hitler tries to conceal his crimes
instead of boasting about them. Such evidence authenticates that Adolf Hitler had committed mass
murder in order to promote himself as a powerful leader rather than eliminating a threat to humanity.
This notion is also applicable to Macbeth as he was also an actor who became convinced by his own
act. This is observed in Macbeth's infamous dagger soliloquy, "Is this a dagger which I see before
me,/...Or art thou but/A dagger of the mind, a false creation/ Proceeding from the heat–oppressed
brain?/...I go and it is done. The bell invites me./" (2.1.44–51 & 75). Shakespeare utilizes
characterization in order to illuminate Macbeth's state of mind before he commits the murder of
Duncan. Additionally, Shakespeare depicts how Macbeth begins to hallucinate due to the immense
stress he is experiencing. Shakespeare shows how guilt and conscience affect Macbeth which
validates that Macbeth was aware that he was committing a dreadful crime. As Macbeth becomes
king, Macbeth develops into a tyrant who

Russell takes the ironic argument that a pure good force has infinite power however still creates

would say otherwise as his response will show that the existence of evil is not a sufficient
justification for the non–existence of God and that God can co–exist with evil. In this paper, I'm
defending Leibniz's view because God permitted evil in order for the greater good and God created a

He shows immense pride in being a villain and perpetually flaunts his "intellectual superiority" and
power, as he brings his "monstrous birth to the world's light" (1.3.447). In his soliloquies, it is
almost as if he engages the audience and recounts the details of his plan emphasizing his
intelligence/skill, while demeaning the other characters. For example after he tricks Cassio into
believing the best way to win back Othello's favour is through Desdemona, he says, "what's he[...]
that says I play the villain,/ When this advice [I give is] honest.[...]/How am I then a villain/ To
council Cassio[...] to his good"(2.3.356–369)? He evidently brags about the fact that the "fools" in
the play, are so easily deceived by his "honest" and "heavenly shows", while he is planning the
"blackest sins". Othello, Cassio and Desdemona all confide in him and trust him, including his
unsuspecting wife, yet little do they know; they are all merely pawns in his wicked game. His ability
to trick/manipulate/control others is captivating, as his only weapon is essentially his "tongue." He
speaks in an elliptical manner and has a way with words, such that his words mean/signify much
more then they appear to, which makes him such a monstrous

Comparing Evil In Emerson, Hawthorne, And Melville Essay

  • 1. Comparing Evil in Emerson, Hawthorne, and Melville Essay Lionel Trilling once said, "A proper sense of evil is surely an attribute of a great writer." (98–99) Although he made the remark in a different context, one would naturally associate Hawthorne and Melville with the comment, while Emerson's might be one of the last names to mind. For the modern reader, who is often in the habit of assuming that the most profound and incisive apprehension of reality is a sense of tragedy, Emerson seems to have lost his grip. He has often been charged with a lack of vision of evil and tragedy. Yeats, for example, felt that Whitman and Emerson "have begun to seem superficial, precisely because they lack the Vision of Evil" (qtd. in Matthiessen 181). There is no doubt that Emerson was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (1038) There are Chaos and the Dark, but man can soar over them by "unfurling beautiful wings" and become "an angel of wisdom." (Emerson, "American Scholar" 1083). It is a duty of Man Thinking to guide men by "showing the facts amidst appearances" and accepting "poverty and solitude." He can and should convert a mulberry leaf into satin and sometimes evil itself can be a guide for good; "Drudgery, calamity, exasperation, want, are instructors in eloquence and wisdom." ("American Scholar" 1082) Moral and natural evil appear in experience but they are not ultimate realities, only relative and transitory. But Emerson's belief and reality often clashed head–on with each other. Emerson knew the ideal often exists only in thought and lived by and large only in the mind. In his later essay "Experience," his doubt is conveyed quite clearly. In this essay he wanted to reaffirm the hope of humanity and presumably he didn't intend to express such a feeling as frustration, but it is certainly there. The essay opens with a tone of bewilderment: Where do we find ourselves? In a series of which we do not know the extremes, and believe that it has none. We wake and find ourselves on a stair, there are stairs below us, which we seem to have ascended; there are stairs above us, many a one, which go upward and out of sight. • 3. Comparing Kami Garcia's Use Of The Supernatural In Good... "Double double toil and trouble." Those words are said In act 1 by what people call now a days, witches. The supernatural are everywhere we go. Books, movies, tv shows, they are looming in the back of our minds at night but especially in the book, Macbeth. Birds may not be supernatural but they are also mentioned many times in both Macbeth and Beautiful Creatures. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare and Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia, Good vs Evil is shown through the use of the supernatural beings and internal conflicts. The Supernatural has been alive for many years, even in the 1600's there were things like witches and ghouls. The supernatural is shown throughout the play Macbeth; the three witches or the ghost of Banquo could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He doesn't know whether to be good or evil. Just like Macbeth, Lena is having the same conflict. She doesn't want to use her magic a lot otherwise she will become corrupt. Also, she doesn't want her lover to get injured. She is stuck between protecting someone she loves and turning evil. She doesn't want to lose her boyfriend to the evil that looms in her world however if she doesn't stop she will be trying to protect him from herself. It seems as though they face some pretty gruesome inner conflicts. One of these characters turns good but the other seems to have gone down the wrong path. Both of these characters are fighting their inner demons. "The right thing and the easy thing are never the same." This quote is said in the movie Beautiful creatures where Lena must make a decision to save her boyfriend. To save him she must sacrifice herself. We can see that in both Macbeth and Beautiful Creatures, both characters must make a difficult decision. Whether it is for good or evil, they must Decide. Throughout both of these works of art we see the characters fighting their inner demons and the supernatural. Deciding to be good or evil is the hardest choice for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The four texts that have studied this are American Sniper by Clint Eastwood, Run all Night by Jaume Collet, Batman begins by by Christopher Nolan, Slumdog millionaire by Danny Boyle. These films describe real evil in it. Evil is necessary when preventing further evil. This was seen in American Sniper. In the scene Chris Kyle was staring around with his sniper at top of building. • 7. Green Gulch: The True Meaning Of Evil Evil is a natural occurrence in the world and has many different implications. The true meaning of evil is shown in the pieces Green Gulch by Loren Eiseley, Genesis 3, and Lance Morrow's essay. In the piece Green Gulch the true meaning of evil is shown when the older boys beat up the younger boy who is innocently watching them. "I do not know who threw the stone first...who struck me first, or even who finally, among that ring of vicious faces, put me on my feet ...and said, roughly, 'There's your road, kid, follow the street lamps. They'll take you home." It may seem that the young boy was only hurt physically but as a matter of fact he was also hurt mentally. • 9. Comparing The State Of Mississippi: The Line Between Good... The topic of good and evil first arose in the book of Genesis and whether an act is good or evil is still contentious in today's society. An individual's perception of what is good and evil is always subjective, as it will have been shaped by religious beliefs and cultural influences. Despite the differing views that arise, good and evil are polar opposites and have been symbolised as being dualistic, such as the battle between light and dark or God and the Devil. Burning Mississippi, 1988, a film based around a FBI investigation into the murders of three civil rights workers in the U.S. state of Mississippi in 1964, clearly demonstrates how the line between good and evil is in fact permeable and, depending on the situational pressures, that almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This act of evil demonstrates how the line between good and evil is permeable as it is situational forces that induce him into choosing an evil outcome. As one of the town's police officers he would normally have been a righteous person who chooses to use his free will in a positive manner. However, due to the nature of Mississippi in 1964, with the extensive oppression of the coloured (Negro) people, he was undoubtedly pressured into the actions taken. Mrs Pell, another movie character, demonstrates this when she spoke to FBI Agent Rupert Anderson. She wept saying, "Hatred isn't something you're born with. It gets taught. At school, they said segregation what's said in the Bible. Genesis 9, verse 27. Seven years of age, you get told it enough times, you believe it." This dialogue is evidence of the extreme situational forces that were present. The actions of Frank Bailey, in the murdering of the three civil rights workers unquestionably demonstrates how, due to the circumstances, a normally good individual can be induced into committing an act of ... • 13. Backyard Blues Analysis In Trethewey's "Native Guard," graves symbolize the futility of mankind's efforts to conceal its evils and of failure to combat the racist system put in place by white America. For years, Trethewey's mother fought to protect her daughter from the hatred and prejudice in America. Her protest against the hatred of America was snuffed out by abusive partners and by the nascent racism of America. In the poem "Graveyard Blues,"she describes the atmosphere of the graveyard as blues–y and dreary. She "wander[s] now among the names of the dead: My mother's name, stone pillow for my head;" her mother's name now only a marker of her lifetime of suffering (Trethewey 8). Not only a problem in Trethewey's time, racism and inherent discrimination were an issue for even the African American heroes of the Civil War, the Native Guard receive no recognition from the historians of the fort or the Daughters of the Confederacy. In the poem "Elegy for the Native Guards, Trethewey states that there are "no names carved for the Native Guards– 2nd Regiment, Union men, black phalanx. What is monument to their legacy?" (Trethewey 44) They receive no honorable grave. They receive the most barbaric of burial rites, doomed to have "fish dart among their bones." (Trethewey 44) The bodies of the native guard are cast out of sight into the ocean, neglected in an attempt to forget the evils committed against them. Their forgotten and neglected grave symbolizes the futility of fighting against the racism of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Compare And Contrast Puritan And John Edwards Pastors have used the "fire and brimstone" method for centuries, scaring congregations into obedience with the threat of being sent to an indescribably painful realm after death, usually referred to as "hell". Pastor John Edwards took this method to a new extreme; he terrified some people so much that they went as far as to commit suicide during his sermons. One particular sermon combines some of the principles of Puritan faith, as well as his personal opinions, with what is commonly considered the most vivid description of hell ever written. His sermon represents the Puritan belief system in some respects, but not all, which can be seen by identifying and comparing the main points of the sermon and other similarities in his sermon to known Puritan values. John Edwards actually gives hope to his congregation with his views, while Puritanical views are even harsher. One of the most central beliefs in Puritan faith is that human nature is evil. They constantly need to access themselves and make up for their sins. That is a point that is strongly emphasized throughout the sermon. In fact, even the first sentence brings this belief into light, claiming, "natural men...deserved the fiery pit." He says that their wickedness is making them heavy like lead, weighing them down into hell. In his opinion they have done nothing to appease God's anger and gain his grace, which is, in Puritan faith, the only way to be saved from the pits of hell. He describes God's anger as "great waters ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Agatha, on the other hand, is desperate to return home. The two best friends follow their fairy tale and must face the most terrifying part of this fantasy: The End. • 19. Analysis Of A Good Man Is Hard To Find In O'Connor's short story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the setting contributes to the reader's understanding of Bailey's out of tune family. We can assume the story took place in the post–war mid century era given the fact that O'Connor wrote this story in 1953 and when the grandmother says, "the way Europe acted you would think we were made of money" (O'Connor). During the 1940's and 1950's the backbone of the American dream was "hard work, family values, and hope" (Desmond). Families from back then were big on respect and took family time seriously. When comparing a traditional mid century family to Bailey's family there is a distinct difference that allows us to label them as a dysfunctional family. Although we do not get a look into the family's work ethic, we do get a close enough look to see their lack of family values. Throughout the story there are several times where the family reveals that they are clearly flawed with the words they choose to say or simply with their actions. One of the characters we see this most in is the daughter June Star. In the beginning of the story she talks about the grandmother in a mocking way, saying that grandmother could not bear to stay at home by herself and that she had to go everywhere they go. A more obvious time she reveals her ugly attitude is when Red Sam's wife compliments June Star and asks if she would like to be her little girl. June Star responds with "No I certainly wouldn't, I wouldn't live in a broken–down place like this for a minion bucks!" (O'Connor). No one bothers to notice how embarrassing her remark is or bothers to scold her but the grandmother. It is not only June Star who shows a lack of values but we also see that Bailey allows his children to dictate his decisions. After Bailey tells not only the two kids but the grandmother as well that they will not be making any stops, the two children begin to throw a ugly fit, while the grandmother continuously tries to change his mind. We gather from this incident that the children and grandmother lack reverence for the father, and by Bailey giving in, he shows that he lacks authority. Normally, a father is supposed to be the head of the household and have the last word. "The Bible is quite clear in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So, based on this information on this subject Hobbes's view is very different from other philosophers since he believes in the greatest evil instead of believing in the greatest good. According to Hobbes's view and the points he made, it shows a different perspective aspect of seeing human's nature like how he describes as "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short" and I think his point holds a reasonable ground. Lastly, I will explain why his good and evil is a part of this world. To begin with, Hobbes's account on good and evil is very different than any other philosophers because he believes in the greatest evil when they do not think the greatest evil exist. Hobbes does not believe in the greatest good as the other philosophers because he does not consider that there is a god or anything that will give people some happiness and pleasure. Because I think that Hobbes believes good comes based on a desire within a person. Based on the "Leviathan.", Hobbes states that men's desire is called good and people's hate is considered evil. For example most titans are mythical beings created to represent something unknown (say the ocean) and give it meaning (the tiedes clash and waves form because oceanus demands it, etc). Another example is the God Aphrodite whom, much like humans, participated in strategic and barbaric warfare. The gods have qualities of human mortals, with a twist. Most are related in their own manner to the ways of human life. Consider the story of pandora's box. The awareness of evils, present not only in human society but also in the physical and biological levels, is raised among scientists and theologians who participate in theology–science dialogue. Not only animals but also plants experience sufferings and pains to a certain extent. On the physical level, the increase of entropy according to the 2nd law of thermodynamics is regarded as analogous to the notion of evil on the physical level. Even though the prevalence of evil in the world raises a question as to the goodness of a god in any religion, "The problem is particularly pressing for Abrahamic faiths that insist on God's fairness, love, and goodness." In that vein, Veli–Matti Kärkkäinen appositely and acutely points out, "Rampant suffering and acts of evil in the world, both in relation to humanity (moral evil) and to nature (natural evil), constitute a major atheistic challenge concerning the existence of God." In this paper, rather than presenting a full–scale theodicy, I engage with the problem of theodicy through careful comparative study between Wolfhart Pannenberg's and Catherine Keller's theodical arguments in the context of their dialogue with modern physics and biology. Rousseau is known for his first book, A Discourse on the Sciences and Arts, about his philosophies saying that man is good. Golding is known for his bestselling novel he ever wrote, Lord of The Flies, also expressing his philosophies saying that man is evil. Rousseau and Golding have many contrasts that fight against each other's philosophies but was never spoken to each other because they lived in different time periods. Comparing Shakespeare's Othello And The Apologetics Of Evil Othello, by William Shakespeare has been studied throughout the ages after I studied the play I have decided that I believe that Iago was not sane, he was a psychopath(a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behaviour). I have found that after searching through many critics with a various amount of opinions there were many that disagree and agree with my hypothesis. Fred West claimed that Iago was a psychopath and said William Shakespeare "constructed Iago so that he fulfills the clinical profile of the psychopath". Comparing Rowe's Argument Of God And Evil God is Evil In this paper, I will carefully reconstruct Rowe's argument by: identifying the premises and conclusion, testing the validity and soundness according to Rowe's argumentation, determining what the best objection is, and finally discerning whether the opposition is truly the best counterargument. Rowe's argument originates from the argument of evil, which is, if there is an omniscient being, who is in fact, then why does this being allow meaningless suffering to exist ? Therefore, there is no God because gratuitous suffering does exist. In this argument, Rowe finds the definition for God and Evil within this argument. In Rowe's case, God means a wholly, good omniscient being, and Evil means(well in God's case) the action of not doing anything when animal or people are in need of such an awesome being. Rowe's argument is pretty much the same as the argument of evil, except he applied a few conditions, which is what he summarized from the evil argument himself . God's essence, found in his centrum is a united manifestation of his ground and existence, light or dark. God's centrum is entirely indestructible and cannot be separated from his being. As human beings are created in the image of God, they possess all that God does but they cannot be analogous to God. Schelling wrote that the unity that is inseparable in God is separable in the human being. In man therefore, there is the possibility of good and evil, whereas in God there is not (82). Schelling names this tension in human being's their Selfhood. According to Schelling, a human being is an egoistical, particular being distinguished from God . Selfhood and a person's spirit are united so long as selfhood stays unified with understanding and light. Selfhood, similar to spirit, is different from the ruling principle of light as well as the grounding principle of darkness. Selfhood can cause disruption by pushing the self–will away from one's centrum, where it really is subordinated to universal will . The instant this centrum is disturbed and also the equilibrium and ground and existence, corruption and unrest starts to develop. Comparing Nietzsche's Beyond Good And Evil Quite possibly the most poignant and eye–opening relationship of the entire play of Hamlet and his mother, becomes sabotaged by Hamlet internalizing Catholic driven dogma. People often resort to using religion as a moral compass to give their lives structure and personal guidance. Friedrich Nietzsche, a prominent figure associated with the existential movement states in his book, Beyond Good and Evil, that "Perhaps one the most solemn concepts which have occasioned the most strife and suffering, the concepts 'God' and 'sin', will one day seem to us of no more importance than a child's toy and a child's troubles" (82). Despite the two playing equal parts in the relationship, it is Gertrude who is Hamlet sees as scandalous and a disgrace because of the marriage. The Importance Of Evil In Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness The Evil within Us With seven deadly sins and plenty other ruinous ones, we as individuals and as a society often fall prey to detrimental temptations, causing us to question our true morality, our hidden nature. When our restraints loosen and our faith shakes, we can seemingly revert back to savage ways, to violence, to brutality. Although humanity has its share of shining moments, it also has those we deeply regret, wish to forget, or continually sweep under the carpet. Likewise, in Heart of Darkness, author Joseph Conrad establishes that all men have capacities for evil, despite appearances, suggesting that we are all susceptible to corruption as we are continually forced to choose between two evils. Conrad exposes mankind's underlying ugliness and brutality because, despite some's undying faith in humanity, no one is a perfect saint. We are all guilty of the twinge of hatred whenever a car cuts us off or when the waiter messes up the order. However, knowing the societal and physical consequences for acting on such hatred, we typically refrain or convert it into something more positive, such as work or fitness. But, when that hatred becomes unrestrained and unfiltered, we too have the potential to injure, to kill, or even to massacre. But whenever the locks and chains of law and order are cast off, and anarchy comes in, he shows himself for what he really is." – Arthur Schopenhauer In today's world, human behaviours are driven by the civilization preset by society. In the rare occasion that the civilization is taken away, humans unveil their true selves: animals with a savage and evil nature. In 1954, after leaving the Royal Navy, William Golding wrote his story Lord of the Flies, which focuses on a group of young boys stranded on an island after their plane crashed. ... This quotation shows the change in character from innocent to savage. Jack, who started the story off as simply a "selfish" British boy now has a "compulsion to kill". Jack's evil nature is starting to appear and this nature is "swallowing him up". This connects to The Garden of Eden because in that story it is shown that Adam and Eve start out innocent, but as time goes on their natural evil is released and they sin by taking the apple from the tree. The allegory shown by Jack's action exhibits how this story is an example of the unveiling of evil and savage when taken from civilization. The boy's natural savage appears moments after they are released from civilization. In Lord of The Flies, Golding also uses the characterization of Ralph to illustrate how the natural savage is inescapable and that no matter one tries they can't change that. For a majority of the story Ralph is seen as the most innocent and civilized. From the moment they arrive on the island, Ralph spends a lot of time trying to keep order and stop the savage actions of Jack and his group. Though he tries to stay completely innocent, even Ralph begins to reveal evil traits on the island. When the hunters are on a violent man chase for Ralph around the island, Ralph fights back and "launche[s] himself like a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Comparing Grendel's 'Good And Evil In Beowulf' Good and evil are obliviously presented in Beowulf to the point that it's nearly impossible to overlook. Grendel lacked any actual description of his physical appearance. This is because Grendel represents horror and corruption and the audience are supposed to visualize him as an enormous, scary, monster (enormous because the epic stated that he was carrying 30 men in his arms). He also represents everything that goes against the Anglo–Saxons culture so that the audience also sees him as a foreigner (The audience, at the time, were Anglo–Saxons). The traits, Grendel contains, that makes him scary and weird includes: Grendel attacking alone even though the Anglo–Saxons, at the time, were accustomed to attacking in war bands, groups, or clans. The fact that Grendel doesn't use any weapons at all to carry out his terror yet all of the warriors do. (And some of them even named their weapons like Unferth who named his sword Hrunthing. The same sword Unferth he gave to Beowulf). The epic doesn't mention Grendel having a father which is deemed as odd and foreign since, in Beowulf, nearly all characters introduce themselves as "son of" ... Beowulf even managed to rip off Grendel's arm with his bare hands, then chased after Grendel's mother and killed her in a dangerous battle , far from anyone to call upon for help, before going back to finish off Grendel and his terror once and for all. • 64. Comparing The Searchers And Touch Of Evil Despite the numerous differences between The Searchers (1956) and Touch of Evil (1958) the overarching themes and character similarities of the films define them as comparable. Both were created at the beginning of a phase which saw a great shift of cinematic themes within the industry. While these themes were changing rapidly in the late 1950s, cinematic techniques were at times innovative and at times adherent to classical traditions. This essay contextualises these films and illustrates the differences and similarities in style and content. Prior to WWII, most films centered on conventional protagonists – men and women who had discernable motives and where everything was black or white. After the war a new set of viewer ideals were established and Hollywood responded with the anti–hero; characters whose actions were sometimes questionable. In the later half of the 1950s, with the expansion of independent movie houses, there was a dramatic shift in subject matter. Movies introduced the more taboo themes of sex, drugs and race. ... Edwards has no explanation for what he's been doing in the intervening years. Both Quinlan and Edwards are considered heroic, assuredly, but there is no reason for the viewer to think they are strong moral characters. • 66. Good And Evil In Dante Alegheri's The Inferno The Inferno is one– third of the Divine Comedy, which was constructed after Dante Alegheri was exiled from Florence. This was the first piece of literature to be written in the common tongue. Lower class civilians were able to read his work, making it a very powerful poem. Many people praised Dante Alegheri and agreed with his opinions and critique of the government. Throughout the Inferno, Dante Alegheri uses his relationship with Virgil, his sympathy towards the lustful, and his punishments of Caiaphas and the clergymen to reflect on his personal criticisms of human reason, his definition of good and evil, and man's responsibility. Dante, the author, punishes Caiaphas harder than the other hypocrites in Circle Eight and gives him the title of Chief Hypocrite. "He is punished by being himself crucified to the floor of Hell by three great stakes and in such a position that every passing sinner must walk upon him. Thus, he must suffer upon his own body the weight of all the world's hypocrisy, as Christ suffered upon His body the pain of all the world's sins"(Alegheri 186). Because Dante is a Catholic and views Caiaphas as the ultimate hypocrite, he shows no remorse towards him because as a high priest and a man of God, it was his responsibility, to recognize Jesus as the Messiah and he failed to do that. • 68. Examples Of Light In Macbeth In the play 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare, light and dark imagery is used throughout the story in order to show the difference and symbolism between good and evil. Light represents innocence, truth and purity while darkness is used to represent cruelty, guilt and corruption. Towards the end of the play, Shakespeare correlates the ideas of both lightness and darkness to portray life and death. Ultimately, they represent good and evil. Shakespeare uses these two themes to drive the plot and story forward in order to create conflict, twists and symbolism. In the first act of Macbeth, Malcolm is given the title as King Duncan's successor meaning he is next in line to the throne. The imagery of light is first used to portray the bravery and ... When Macbeth discovers the news about the death of his wide, Lady Macbeth, he comes to realize that life itself is meaningless and pointless as it does not last for a long time and can be easily blown out, referring back to the candle and its vulnerability and fragility. "And all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by and idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" (Act 5 sc 5). Finally, the final use of imagery related to the theme of darkness and light is seen when Macbeth begin his soliloquy by comparing his life to a lighted candle. The flame of the candle is a metaphor for short life or sudden death and it demonstrates how our reality is nothing but emptiness and darkness. Our very existence is merely just a brief moment of light and life, the flame of a candle. We are surrounded by darkness before birth as well as after death. We believe that our desires and ambition has great meaning, but once that candle is blown out, our aspirations are meaningless. This is what Macbeth is referring to in the quote, telling us that he wishes that his flame burns out as well; losing all interest in everything he aspired to be and earn. ... • 70. Comparing Nietzsche's Beyond Good And Evil In Beyond Good and Evil Nietzsche argues philosophy is a mere self–serving vanity on the part of historical philosophers. Their explanations and truth–seeking are only their deepest desires of how they wish things to have originated from. In this paper, I will try to explain what Nietzsche thought philosophers were doing when constructing their theories and why his argument is a good one. In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche begins to ask why humans seek the truth and if it actually is a benefit to our lives. Arguably, metaphysicians are trying to give things of higher value a separate origin of their own, which many of the early philosophers believed could not come from our physical world. Consequently instead of looking at the "seductive, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The past philosophers made claims which they later tried to defend with logical reasoning. What philosophers have done is to come up with an answer to a question which seems unanswerable through their theories. If someone comes along and begins to criticize their theories, they begin to complain and start to argue why their theory is correct and cannot be wrong. These philosophers begin to feel threatened in a way because on their theories begin to get attacked. Philosophers have put immense time into their philosophical achievements and believe them to be the best way to get to knowledge. Nietzsche says that what philosophers are expressing is "a type of involuntary and self–conscious memoir." When philosophers create their theories, they make them according to what they believe to be true or want to be true. It is actually a person's values which dictate their theories and use the theories as a way to secretly express their inner views to the masses. Philosophers might not realize they are doing this as they are making their theories with good intentions. The question that I was hoping to answer was, why would God place the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden? I know that this a question that many philosophers and theologians have looked into but I wanted to do some digging of my own to better comprehend God's actions. I had four different sources, all hard copy books from the campus library. The main source I used was The Expositor's Bible Commentary written by Frank Gaebelein. The other three were Creation and Fall (Bonhoeffer), From Eden to Eden (Waggoner) and In the Beginning (Armstrong). In the Bible it says that God created all things. It also says ... • 74. Comparing Evil In Shakespeare's Macbeth And Adolf Hitler Anas Badri McLaughlin Macbeth Essay The word, "evil," is a widely used term which can specify something significant. In many instances, the meaning of the term can be devalued through overuse and when it is used aimlessly. Evil has a multitude of degrees and hierarchies which allow distinctions to be made. The hierarchies include natural evils, man–made evils, wickedness, selfish wickedness, conscientious wickedness, heteronomous wickedness, and malignant wickedness. Such degrees of evil is prominent in the play, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. The play, Macbeth, encompasses the story of an individual named Macbeth and his rather violent journey to becoming king. As the play progresses, Macbeth becomes engulfed by his excessive ambition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is pronounced as both were conscious of their actions. The authors illuminate this notion through the use of diction and characterization. Adolf Hitler was conscious of his actions and he recognized that he had crossed a boundary. Rosenbaum states, "Evidence that Hitler was conscious of his criminality includes his recurrent efforts to conceal his authorship of the Final Solution. In effect, he was the first Holocaust denier, ostentatiously calling the Holocaust a 'rumor' in one of his 'Table Talk' conversations" (Rosenbaum, 121). Ron Rosenbaum utilizes diction as he uses words such as "criminality," "authorship," and "ostentatiously" in order to portray Adolf Hitler as a wicked murderer. Furthermore, Rosenbaum proclaims unlike a true believer, Adolf Hitler recognized that his horrendous crimes exceeded a boundary. As a result, Adolf Hitler tries to conceal his crimes instead of boasting about them. Such evidence authenticates that Adolf Hitler had committed mass murder in order to promote himself as a powerful leader rather than eliminating a threat to humanity. This notion is also applicable to Macbeth as he was also an actor who became convinced by his own act. This is observed in Macbeth's infamous dagger soliloquy, "Is this a dagger which I see before me,/...Or art thou but/A dagger of the mind, a false creation/ Proceeding from the heat–oppressed brain?/...I go and it is done. The bell invites me./" (2.1.44–51 & 75). Shakespeare utilizes characterization in order to illuminate Macbeth's state of mind before he commits the murder of Duncan. Additionally, Shakespeare depicts how Macbeth begins to hallucinate due to the immense stress he is experiencing. Shakespeare shows how guilt and conscience affect Macbeth which validates that Macbeth was aware that he was committing a dreadful crime. Comparing Leibniz's Existence Between Good And Evil Student Number: 250816287 T.A.: Tracy de Boer Philosophy 1020 October 9th 2014 Title (2) Russell takes the ironic argument that a pure good force has infinite power however still creates something that is evil. He therefore challenges the question whether or not God exists. Leibniz would say otherwise as his response will show that the existence of evil is not a sufficient justification for the non–existence of God and that God can co–exist with evil. In this paper, I'm defending Leibniz's view because God permitted evil in order for the greater good and God created a world in which good and evil exists through free will. Nothing Shall Content My Soul In Othello "Nothing Shall Content My Soul": Iago, the "Motiveless Malignity" in Shakespeare's Othello Villains are characters who are devoted to committing evil acts and thus set the plot in motion. They add excitement to works of literature, as they challenge the concept of higher morality, to achieve a certain goal. For the most part, a villain has a motive for their heinous deeds, but a villain whose only motive is the sadistic pleasure they receive from watching their victims suffer, is the most interesting. For example after he tricks Cassio into believing the best way to win back Othello's favour is through Desdemona, he says, "what's he[...] that says I play the villain,/ When this advice [I give is] honest.[...]/How am I then a villain/ To council Cassio[...] to his good"(2.3.356–369)?
