Rock ‘N’ Roll Music Has Widely Influenced Music And Society
Rock 'n' roll music has widely influenced music and society and continues to do so today. Rock 'n'
roll emerged in the 1950's a time where whites and blacks were heavily segregated. Rock and roll
music not only changed the nation's current musical norms, but indicated the joy of the emerging
youth culture of the generation. It influenced artists whether black or white to come into the
mainstream music. Famous artists still remembered today also influenced rock and roll. Those
pioneers helped change the musical norms and the overall history of music. White rock 'n' rollers
helped build a ladder for black artists to come into the scene. It was certain that rock 'n' roll made it
possible for greater acceptance, appreciation and a wider ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

"When first entering in America, British folk music was distinguished by three–chord tunes, sparse
instrumentation (with some fiddlers), mostly male performers, improvisation, the singers' sporadic
shouts (Scottish "yips"), Christian themes served up in hundreds of hymns, and a secular collection
of songs that told stories, generally about love and lost love, using metaphor and symbol to tell
those stories" (Allen 101). By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, British music
changed and became Americanized. Vocal harmonizing slowly evolved, and fiddlers were
accompanied by those who played banjo, an African American opening. "Tambourines and "bones"
(tapping out rhythms using pork rib bones) were a minstrel show contribution" (Allen 102). When
African Americans were forced into slavery and brought to North America in the 1600s, they
brought their own musical traditions and sounds. Slaves who were on the Mississippi River Valley
delta soil developed what will later be introduced as blues music. On the plantations, slaves greatly
changed British American hymn singing. They took non–religious British American songs and
turned it into their own forms of music that followed their culture and taste of music. Blues emerged
in the early twentieth century at the same time country music became settled from its folk roots.
Blues music talked about the indifferences African American slaves were going through at that time.

The Hip Hop and Rock n Roll Controversy
In 2015, a company known as " Nielsen Music", reported in an article, the preferred music that
Americans listen to. Using a circle graph to illustrate the music genres and there given percentage.
To the surprise of most, rock n roll lead the genres with a 30%. Not falling far behind hip hop
followed with an impressive 22%. Obviously both rock n roll and hip hop are commonly listened
too by Americans. Rock n Roll and Hip Hop are very different form each other, although similar at

For instance, both require many hours in a professional studio, a producer present, and an incredible
amount of dedication. Artist in both genres have claimed, that listening to music from a genres
different than theirs, is extremely helpful in their creative writing process. For example, the popular
Rock n roll artist known as "Aerosmith" has said that he enjoys listening to the Hip hop group
known as "Run –DMC" while in his studio session. Popular rapper named "J.COLE" has confirmed
to his fans that while in his creative process he enjoys listening to classical jazz. Which he depicts in
his music, by sampling various classical jazz songs and incorporating into his beats. In conclusion,
Rock n roll and hip hop may have many differences. Such as the different purposes they serve, the
artists dress code, the different music styles, and or the culture the genres represents. There are also
many similarities, such as the music writing process, the talented artists, and the love and or
admiration people have for the music itself. Regardless if one may prefer Rock n roll, or hip hop.

The Impact of Rock 'n' Roll on the Civil Rights Movement
It was no coincidence that rock 'n' roll and the civil rights movement started at the same time. The
genre originated from African American music and was greatly discriminated against. Traditional
white Americans would target anything bad about it. But as the teenager demographic of the 1950s
started increasing the sales of the music, the genre started gaining more popularity. It was the style
of Elvis Presley and his new voice that made girls weak in the knees and boys want to be him.
Artists such as Presley had enough influence to change the view of their devoted fans on civil rights
issues. Soon as protest songs and rock 'n' roll became more popular and influential, it began a gap

he would never drink, and most of his songs had religious connotations. He was a humble man who

up with little money, and his family lived off of welfare. During the year of 1948 Presley moved to
Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 13, and there he was introduced to the black community. In
Memphis he was a frequent singer at the Reverend H.W. Brewster's black Memphis church where
he learned gospel music. Elvis Presley was best known for his integration of R&B and country
music. The public was scared that not only Presley would integrate music but also the white and
black community. Which was something he did actually achieve according to Little Richard "He
was an integrator. Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door
for black music" (Elvis After 198). Parents were afraid of his music, considering it was said that he
had a voice of a black man. He caused controversy, a white man singing black music on the

Rock N Roll On American Culture
Music is often considered "the universal language." Throughout history, it has symbolized love,
brought people together, and mobilized millions. In the 1950s, a new form of music entered the
American music industry that drastically changed the culture of the United States (U.S.): rock
music. In the U.S., it began as rock 'n' roll, an originally "black" music genre that was then taken
and promulgated by white Americans. After World War II (WWII), many Americans–especially
teenagers–struggled with the newfound societal conformity and normalcy, and rock provided them
with a form of rebellion. From its beginning, rock united the younger generation of Americans,
stirring up a sense of community a new values amongst teenagers–heightening the already ... Show

Before the 1960s, black artists were largely ignored, and black music frequently only gained
popularity if a white artist covered it.4 The Motown Record Company, located in Detroit, turned this
all on its head. Motown's owner, Berry Gordy Jr. groomed and prepared his company's artists for
mainstream success by studying successful white artists, polling on the street for interest in certain
sounds, and having "Quality Control," in which every song had to be approved by Gordy and a
panel of other company members.5 Motown, also known as "Hitsville USA," helped stars like
Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and William "Smokey" Robinson make it big in an industry where
white individuals dominated. Moreover, the "British Invasion" of the 1960s, in which British Rock
bands such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones captured the hearts of millions of Americans, led
not only to a decrease in the former national sentiment of U.S. superiority, but also, increased
respect for black music.6 Musicians like the Beatles–who initially covered black American artists'
songs such as Anna (Go to Him) by Arthur Alexander–claimed that American rock 'n' roll served as
a initial model for their music.7 This led to a small but meaningful increase in the credibility of
black artists in the U.S. music scene as Americans began questioning the importance of an artist's

The Genre Of Rock ' N ' Roll
Elvis Presley, also known as the king of Rock 'n' roll, once said "Rock 'n' roll music, if you like it, if
you feel it, you can 't help but move to it. That 's what happens to me. I can 't help it." The genre of
Rock 'n' roll has been a part of the world since the early 1940's. According to "Just a Half a Mile
from the Mississippi Bridge": The Mississippi River Valley Origins of Rock 'n' Roll, this genre was
born in the Mississippi River Valley and moved up and down its course, including its tributaries (the
Cumberland, Tennessee, Illinois, and Missouri rivers), and along the highways and railroads which
paralleled those rivers. This genre of music produced during the recovery of the second World War,
Rock 'n' roll gave rise to one of the greatest impacts on past American generations, and continues to
go forward into my own generation today. James Henke acknowledges that "various cities played
large roles in the history of Rock 'n' roll: Memphis in the 1950s, Detroit during the Motown era,
London and Liverpool during the British Invasion, San Francisco during the psychedelic era, New
York and London during the punk period, and Seattle during the grunge era." Without rock music,
pop and other genres would not as successful and popular as they are now. While older generations
have a tendency to despise rock music, Elvis Presley exemplified his generation, and rock music
generated an enormous impact on society, and unified the American society. Rock 'n' roll has

The social and political context of the 1950's is crucial to any understanding of the birth of rock n
roll. "Rock was formed out of the social, economic and political context of post–war America". The
social context was on the bases of the post war baby boom, which counted for the birth of 77 million
babies between the years 1946–1964. By the year 1964 forty percent of America's population was
under twenty years of age. For the first time both middle and working class youths were acquiring
an affluent lifestyle. Disposable income came from part–time work and pocket money, which gave
youths some form of spending power, which gave them a sense of independence. This mind you

The rules implemented at teenagers were met with rebellious attitude. The ideological view that the
government had built around education was seen to be artificial. The notion that a good education
would equip an individual with a good job did not fall through as many teenagers realised. As a
result cultural industries saw fit to move in and make profit from this reality by offering a form of
escapism through music. Music mainly Rhythm and Blues was expressing the experiences of young
teenagers. Teenagers no longer upheld the values and message that their parents and schools were
promoting. This created conflict between the cultural industries who were promoting the pleasures
of consumption with the traditional view of educational demands. This was seen to be the
background formation and experience for rock n roll. It was due to the experiences of teenagers that
Rock n roll formed. Rock n roll is due to Presley etc. However the arguments put forward on the
notion that the social and political context of the 1950's was the reason behind the emergence of
rock n roll is undermined by Peterson who states that the birth of Rock n roll can not be purely
based and credited to the individuals mentioned above. That is not to say he is undermining their
talent but instead such talent can be found on a wider scale, however only a few make the forefront.

Summary Of Rock 'N' Roll Changed America By Glen Altschuler
Music has been a major part of the American life in the United States since its victory for
independence against the British in the later part of the 18th century. As time, has passed in the
United States different verities of music appeared and with each new verity came a changed that
ushered in a new style of music. The 1940's to the 1960's was a time when the genre of music called
Rock 'n' Roll appeared and along with its appearance came conflicts and arguments. Glen Altschuler
in his book, All Shook Up: How Rock 'N' Roll Changed America, does a tremendous job at
providing an analytic and well formatted narrative to discusses all the conflicts and arguments that

This was most likely my favorite part of the book. I grew up knowing that rock 'n' roll was
connected to race during its emergence, but I did not know that the songs were considered sexually
back then. Artists of the 1940's, 1950' and 1960's were criticized for their songs that seem to
promote sexuality. Altschuler uses good examples in the book by providing songs that had sexual
lyrics like the song "Sixty Minute Man," written by the Dominoes. The lyrics went as "There'll be
fifteen minutes of kissin' / Then you'll holler, please don't stop / There will be fifteen minutes of
teasin', /And fifteen minutes of squeezin' / And fifteen minutes of blowin' my top" (pg. 86). Another
set of lyrics that were criticized were from a song called Sexy Ways" by Hank Ballard and the
Midnighters. The lyrics went as written "Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle / I just love your sexy ways; /
Upside down, all around, / Any old way, just pound, pound, pound" (pg. 87). These sexual lyrics
threw the parents into a panic during this time, because they thought that these lyrics were going to
promote their children to go and have sex before wedlock. Which was a big thing during this time
because through religion children were taught not to have sex before they were married. The parents
and communities even went as far to visit the radio stations, record stores, and the record
distributors and ask that for a ban on the production, the

Rock N Roll In The 1950s
Rock' n' Roll in the 1950s: The change in America
Music as a whole blends together. One style leads to another, the music becomes more progressive.
It evolves to fit the new generation, leaving the old generation behind. From the spritual songs of
the late 1800s to the gospel of the early 1900s. Then it changed into rhythm and blues, and when the
1950s rolled around it became Rock' n' Roll. With the invention of new iconic instruments like the
Fender Precision Bass and then the Fender Stratocaster, the sound of the music changed. The sound
that was soft and low was now crunchy and loud. While it did not sit well with the adults, it was a
hit among the new generation. Even the African American roots of the music didn't deter the youth

To which they did not approve. They felt it had a rebellious nature. And lead to teens not being more
defiant, and less conforming. But most of all they hated who played the music. Most of the
musicians and music writers were African American. Even though they had earned the respect of
many people while fighting in WWII, their culture was still shunned by most of the public. But
Rock was all about being insobordinate. The fact that the parents hated it made it even more popular
among the teens. The parents might have had their own little pet names about it calling it as blues
legend B.B. King said in an interview with The Guardian, the "Black Chittlin' circuit." But to the
youth it was just music. The acceptance of this generation was going to bring a new opportunity for
Black America in the fight for civil rights.
Even with the definite roots in Black culture, most of the main performers however were white.
Take Elvis Presley for example, the songs he sang were the normal blues rock style, but he was
white. He was still part of the culture, he was thought as black. It was a common saying among the
musicians at the time was that "If you were white and played blues you were black once." These
Black roots and White musicians led to this music being called a black and white hybrid. This fact
was what turned away most adults from this

very popular and artists started to experiment with it which influenced the development of rock n

influence in rock n roll. Teenagers in the 1950's began to listen to a new style of music, it was rock n

loved by many American teenagers but disliked by their parents. Parents did not like it because their
children were rebelling against their music from their generation and danced much more differently
than the parents "to the horror of the older generation, their children were twisting, thrusting,
bumping, and grinding to the sounds of rock n roll"(U.S. History) Many parents thought it was a
bad influence on their children especially after seeing Elvis Presley on the Ed Suvillon Show. Elvis

of dancing. Watching their children dance and listen to rock n roll upset many parents and it made
them hate rock n roll even more. Rock n roll was hated so much by adults that it was banned from

Nikhil Rohilla Michael McGerr HIST A 383 31 January 2016 The Impact of Rock n' Roll On the
Soviet & American Youth The invention of Rock n' Roll goes back a long way. Coming to life
during the early to middle half of the 20th century, Rock n' Roll has come a long way in shaping the
modern world we live in today. Two of the major areas in which Rock n' Roll has had an impact on
is what I will be discussing in this essay. They are, the impact on the youth of both the Soviet Union
and the American. Ever since the rise of the Rock n' Roll genre during the middle of the 20th
century, it has been stereotyped in a negative way by the older generations of the time. It was

Rock n Roll allows the youth to enjoy themselves, it allows them to relax and it allows them to be
happy (Gilbert 1). However, the positive impact of the music upon them is overshadowed by the
resistance from the adults and the parents. According to Eugene Gilbert's article "What Young
People Think", "A majority of interviewed looked upon Rock n' Roll with fear and trepidation. "It
looks like a Roman orgy when those kids get together"..." (Gilbert 1). These certain examples allow
us to see the way adults viewed the youth's interests in Rock n' Roll. It was filled with fear that
could be considered as unnecessary. During this time when Rock n' Roll was gaining momentum in
the US, there was the onset of the Cold War against the Soviet Union coming across the horizon.
Rock n' Roll during this Cold War played a crucial part in favor of the US. It was crucial because for
the Soviets, Rock n' Roll was an "alien" thought that needed to be kept at bay to keep the Soviet
youth pure (Soviet Lectures Faddist Youths 1). The views of the Soviets regarding the presence of
this "alien thought" was very negative and filled with

Original Writing : Rock N Roll
At the turn of the 20th century, the U.S. was introduced to may new cultural ideas and forms of self–
expression; the biggest being music and the new genera of rock n roll. White musicians like Elvis
Presley, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis were the first breed of white musicians who had the
voice and soul of black jazz singers just as Louie Armstrong. The new genera of music separated the
younger generation who was enthusiastic and accepted rock n roll from the older generation who
was not willing to change and accept the new rave of music. Rock n Roll didn't just come about in
the 1950's but was centuries in the makings. In the mid to late 1600's many white settlers began to
trade and force slaves from Africa to do rigorous labor, despite harsh lives they kept their culture
alive. They keep their music alive by singing folk tales while working on the fields. Many of the
song lyrics were made up on the spot and "talked about 'going home'...they [the slaves] were singing
about going north to Canada and freedom" (Patrickson, Will). The civil war freed blacks, and
although their lives were still difficult, there was a sense of peace and freedom achieved. Former
slaves still continued to sing and create music and educated blacks introduced "English hymns"3 to
their music. No longer being enslaved blacks had access to stringed instruments that were
previously played strictly by whites. This access to white instruments was the first time that the soul

Rock N Roll Impact On American Culture
It is well known that racism was very present in the early days of Rock n Roll, but its direct long–
term effect on music is significant. The attitude surrounding black music as an industry would
change after slavery in segregated America. The very sounds being produced were heavily
influenced by slave life. Along with this, music gained a new level of personal emotion due to the
catharsis of the oppressed. Due to slavery, segregation, and racism in America during the early years
of Rock n Roll, a large shift in the culture of the music industry, musical structure, and content
occured. America's attitude regarding race alone created the culture of rebellion that we now
associate with Rock n Roll. Following the abolition of slavery, America ... Show more content on

During the 'birth' of Rock n Roll, Patti Page's recording of "How Much is that Doggie in the
Window" became the number one song on two different charts in the 1950s, and was the societal
standard for acceptable music. In the midst of its large–scale success, the only emotional tie of this
song occurs when Page refers to her supposed lover as her "poor sweetheart." This detached and
bland style of music contrasts directly with the lyrics of artists such as Little Richard, who in his hit
"Tutti Frutti" exclaims that his girl named Daisy 'almost drives [him] crazy.' Little Richard's lyrics
would join artists like Howlin' Wolf in creating a counter–culture of rebellious music. Even with
racism raging across the nation, white people could not help being intrigued by the blatant rebellion
of these black artists. Had there been no slavery or mistreatment to begin with, it is not unlikely that
Howlin' Wolf could have been famous for a song as emotionless as "How Much is that Doggie in
the Window." Race and America's treatment of it would lead to the powerful emotion that formed

Rock'–n'–roll is constantly changing and evolving into specific sub–genres. Sub–genres break down
a general genre of music into a more specific and sophisticated type of that category. For example,
rock has many different branches including soft rock, southern rock, and hard rock. Rock in general
typically has a lead electric guitar with a vigorous 4/4 beat produced by the drums. However, in the
sub–genre of southern rock, a southern country rhythm is combined with a touch of rock and roll.
Hard rock separates itself by sustaining a loud, powerful, voluminous sound, whereas soft rock
maintains a slower and smoother rhythm while still possessing the rock tone. Each sub–genre

This sub–genre originated in the southern United States from the inclusive rock genre. Southern
rock has a very strong lead beat that focuses mainly on vocals and the electric guitar. Just like
country music, southern rock tells a story and that is what makes the lyrics and vocals so important.
Southern rock is a lot like country music as a whole, but separates itself by being louder, adding a
heavier beat, and speeding up the song. Southern rock maintains a rock aspect by its amplified
electric guitar lead and continues to carry a solid beat. Southern rock started to develop in the mid–
1960's and began to hit its peak in the 1970's. The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, The
Marshall Tucker Band, and ZZ Top were a few of the great early bands in southern rock. Southern
rock is still a popular genre including Kid Rock, Shakey Graves, Drive–By Tuckers, and Blackberry
Smoke. Atlanta Rhythm Section, a very popular southern rock band, is known for one of their most
popular songs, Homesick, released in 1981. This song is categorized as southern rock due to its hard
driven beat and the lead electric guitar feature. This song begins with an electric solo that supports
the classification of rock, but then begins to add riffs to compliment the electric guitar solo with a
touch of the south. Throughout the song, the lyrics contribute to the anthem's southern side by

Why Is Rock N Roll So Popular
he music we today call "rock n' roll" is a huge icon of the 50's era. Emerging onto the music scene
with legends such as Elvis Presley in its wake. This is where it all started. After WWII, a quarter of
Americans moved. This gave urban music a new southern, sacred sound. This music started and
found it's roots in places such as Memphis, New York, Detroit, Baltimore, and many other places.
This new sound was, as historian Charlie Gillett said, "The sound of the city." Rock N' Roll
combined the styles of country, R&B, gospel and the blues. Part of the social aspect of why this new
music sound was so popular, is the young audiences that were firsthand exposed to it. Many critics
of the time were dismissing rock as simply too crude and raw to ever make it big. But most realized
their mistakes when musicians such as Chuck Berry and Little Richard were starting to make it onto
the radio airwaves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

bands from the suburbs started to join together and write their own material, the lyrics of the 1960's

Rock N Roll Changing America Essay
Rock 'n' Roll and a Changing America In his book All Shook Up Glenn C. Altschuler attempts to tell
the reader what rock 'n' roll is and how it changed America forever. Altschuler begins his book by
describing how the vast majority of white parents viewed rock 'n' roll during this time. The majority
of parents believed rock 'n' roll to be a "communicable disease" that caused their children to behave
like hoodlums. The parents even began to ban rock 'n' roll shows from coming to their towns in
hope that it would stop their children from listening to the music. It also struck fear in the heart of
parents of young women. This was primarily the case because parents believed that rock 'n' roll
caused a sense of sexual tension to arise in their children. The next part of Altschuler's book
discusses the social impact rock 'n' roll had on the population of America. One major concern for the
white majority of the population was that they feared that the African American population was
using rock 'n' roll in an attempt to integrate and assimilate into white society. Another major concern
for the parents was the lyrics in many of these rock 'n' roll songs. Although today, we may view
these lyrics as generally not very controversial this was not the case in the fifties, many parents
during this time thought that the lyrics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alschuler also claims that after Woodstock rock 'n' roll continued to have a impact on the music
industry but never reached the height of popularity that it had in the fifties. He also says that one of
the main reasons for rock 'n' roll lasting so long is due to the number of variations it now has. Some
of these variations include heavy metal, soft rock and Christian rock. These variations allow for a
larger pool of individuals to find the sound they enjoy and to continue advancing rock 'n' roll

Both the radio and records have had significant impact on the development on rock n' roll. Similarly,
the radio and records gave musical artists an extended ability to stretch their audiences. Strongly
intertwined, while they both gave listeners the ability to find artists they like, there are some clear
differences between each the developments of the radio and that of records. In the years prior, the
music industry was built on the "Tin Pan Alley" system that strictly controlled musicians and
popular music (Schloss, Starr, and Waterman, p. 2–7). And much like the spirit of rock n' roll itself,
people within the industry eventually grew tired of conformity and no longer felt the need to follow
the rules. Radio stations started forming separate licensing companies (BMI), which allowed them
to play what they want (Schloss, Starr, and Waterman, p. 7). With an "open door" policy that
allowed broadcasters to play music they wanted, radio stations had the important job of sharing a
variety of music that could be heard all across the country. The radio began to function as a way of
transporting records and genres of music all over the country from the traditional cultures they
formed, which includes R&B, blues, and country. This reshaped the music industry by expanding its
reach to new audiences. This, "allowed songwriters working outside of mainstream pop to claim

birth of rock 'n' roll has a mythical quality to it. It speaks of racial barriers bridged through the
fusion of Afro–American musical styles with white popular music in 1950s America. Not only did
white record producers and radio disc jockeys market Afro–American artists, but white artists began
to cover their songs, as well as incorporate Afro–American style into their own song writing. The
musical style was so powerful that the white audience was infected by it, despite the social stigma

Historiography and Approach The theme of teenage rebellion is prominent among early rock 'n' roll
historians, who imposed the language and social consciousness of the late–1960s onto their
interpretations. According to them, rock 'n' roll in the 1950s enabled teenagers to protest against the
conformity of the era and also their parents' music. Arnold Shaw in The Rockin' 50s considered
teens' rejection of pop music an outcry against Cold War acquiescence.[3] Carl Belz claimed rock 'n'
roll was folk art that functioned as a voice of the people, namely teenagers. Like Shaw, Belz saw
rock 'n' roll as a "protest art" against prevailing popular music.[4] Rock 'n' roll also displayed that it
was folk art because its audience was drawn to it instinctively, rather than through sophisticated
aesthetic standards for judging the music; the dance beat was more important than musical
technicalities.[5] For these historians, listening to rock 'n' roll was an act of rebellion precisely
because the adult audience and the press condemned the music. In outlining this rebellion, historians
like Belz, Shaw, and Gillett ignored the social significance of Afro–American music finding an
audience in white middle–class teenagers. Gillett offered a rosy but weak prognosis that the white
audience, by virtue of being a minority audience, bridged racial gaps by taking on a radical stance
against majority tastes.[6]

Music is ever changing. It moves at such a rapid pace people may not want to catch up to. The one
genre that seems to have changed the most is "Rock and Roll". In a world of classical opuses, big

unwanted. No matter, rock and roll has played a substantial part in defining our modern culture,
influencing things like individual music taste, political views, and personal expression.

How Elvis Influenced And Changed The Entertainment...
In order to appropriately analyze the question of "How Elvis influenced and changed the
entertainment industry of Rock 'n' Roll" the reader must first clearly define and understand the
timing and age of the development of his musical career as well as the characteristics of his music.
When attempting to clearly understand the implications of his influence on the era, the reader must
fully comprehend his early life and the development of his musical career, the type of music he
portrayed to his audience, and how he revolutionized and influenced Rock 'n' Roll. These facts will
be analyzed using the combination of historical data and current articles for determining his
influence in the 1950s. Regardless of where and how he grew up, it is well documented that his
music influenced the Rock 'n' Roll era. Elvis Aaron Presley was known to be a legendary American
singer, musician, and actor from the 1950s to late 1970s. He is regarded as one of the most
influential and significant cultural icons of the 20th century. He was nicknamed "The King of Rock

"The warden threw a party in the county jail. The prison band was there and they began to wail. The

reacted to his new brand of music, Rock 'n' Roll in the 1950s. Elvis and his music came in a time
when the baby boomers were teenagers and beginning to identify themselves and discover music.
The civil rights movement was just about to begin, and the tension between whites and blacks was

they wanted to spend their money on. They wanted everything that Elvis had and they wanted to do
everything that he did. He inspired a whole generation to be different. He showed them they could

Rock n Roll & 20th Century Culture Essay
Rock 'n' roll and 20th Century Culture
According to Philip Ennis, rock 'n' roll emerged from the convergence of social transformations
which resulted from World War II (Ryan 927). Despite its pop culture origins, rock music is
arguably one of the strongest cultural factors to develop in this century. Artists such as
Lennon, McCartney and Dylan defined the emotions of a generation and, in the last decade, it as
even been acknowledged by members of the establishment which it hoped to change as a major
influence in the country. In order to understand how rock went from a sign of rebellion to a cultural
icon, it is necessary to understand where it came from. According to Albert ... Show more content on

Rock 'n' roll music came of age in the sixties which was a period in the nation's history when a
young generation expressed their anguish and sense of alienation to the country's social
establishments by searching for new answers to the age–old questions concerning the meaning of
life, the value of the individual, and the nature of truth and spirituality (Harris 306). The classic rock
music which was created during this period gave form and substance to this search. Songs such as
"My Generation" by the Who recorded the keen sense of alienation that young people felt from the
past and the "Establishment" and it also showed the keen sense of community they felt among
themselves.
Classic albums such as the Beatles' "White Album," the
Who's "Who's Next," Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited, and Pink
Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" capture what was essential about the time because they were both
a result of that time and because they helped to produce it by reinforcing the younger generation's
feelings of alienation and separation.
Although the distinction is somewhat fuzzy, rock music is not exactly the same as rock and roll.

Rock 'N' Roll: A Brief History Of Folk Music
The new music was built out of materials already in existence: blues, rock'n'roll, folk music. But
although the forms remained, something wholly new and original was made out of these older
elements – more original, perhaps, than even the new musicians themselves yet realize. The
transformation took place in 1966–7. Up to that time, the blues had been an essentially black
medium. Rock'n'roll, a blues derivative, was rhythmic, raunchy, teen–age dance music. Folk music,
old and modern, was popular among college students. The three forms remained musically and
culturally distinct, and even as late as 1965, none of them were expressing any radically new states
of consciousness. Blues expressed black soul; rock, as made famous by Elvis Presley, was the beat
of youthful sensuality; and folk music, with such singers as Joan Baez, expressed anti–war
sentiments as well as the universal themes of love and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Rock 'N' Roll Changed America Essay
Rock 'n' roll has played a major role in some known historical developments post World War 2.
Music plays a significant part in America 's Cold War culture. Music gave us a sense of new
technologies and helped the world to prosper. It also is linked with African Americans living in the

geared towards the youth, race, ethnicity, gender and class. "All Shook Up: How Rock 'n' Roll

there is a myth that rock 'n' roll went into a "lull" following the payola hearings (the practice of
record promoters paying DJs or radio programmers to play their labels ' songs) of 1959 and did not
come about again until the arrival of the Beatles in 1964. Rock 'n' roll presented us with the
emergence of a cultural phenomenon, which the book lays out for us. Altschuler sees rock as a
"metaphor for integration, as the focal point for anxiety that cultural life in the U.S. had become

deeply we must understand the fathers. Chuck Berry plunged his guitar into his amp and turned the

had in store for them. Chuck Berry had a distinct sound that gave him an edge in finding his
audience. He began using the call–and–response with his volume pumped up guitar. He would
evoke not just image but raw skill where he can make his guitar do the singing for him while he's
accompanied by his backing band. Elvis Presley never did write many of his songs. Most were
written by his bandmates yet Elvis gave the music its charm and eventually its glorified time. He put

It is argued over whether rock n' roll is a counterculture or not because it was widely popular
amongst children and adults alike at it's prime and ultimately did not present any radically different
ideas, but what can't be argued is rock n' roll's seniority and perfected tone. While there is much to
be said about the bands that proudly wear the label punk or rock n' roll as a button on their acid
washed jean vests, something has to be said for the history and subculture that defines each
respective genre. Punk refutes social attitudes that have been perpetuated through willful ignorance
of human nature, and rock n' roll is just a trend that people followed because of it's attractive ideal.
If it were not for punk, voices as strong and influential as Billie Joe Armstrong or Sid Vicious would
never had made an impact on millions of angry citizens who were surfeited of systematic oppression
and capitalistic ideals. Counterculture has always been political and driven by the underground,
whether it be the Lolita girls of Japan, the Kontrkul'tura movement in Russia, the Nambassa lifestyle
in New Zealand, or the Basque Radical Rock movement in Spain, but nothing quite compares to the
raw grit and blood that goes into being punk, the ultimately universal counterculture. At it's heart

early developments of rock 'n' roll, which were tied to the development of the Civil Rights

Much of what the author provides for his audience should be praised. The narrative style of how
African–American genres of music, specifically "the Jump Blues, Vocal or Street doowap groups,

among whites is well done in this book. Intriguingly, some of the more interesting chapters in All
Shook Up connect rock 'n' roll to larger cultural and social phenomenon taking place at this time.
One example of this is how the author explores the interrelationship of rock 'n' roll and race. Citing
and detailing the rise of early blues artists like Chuck Berry, "Little Richard" Penniman, and even
Elvis Presley, the author effectively showcases how racism during the Civil Rights Movement was
tied to the development and popularity of rock 'n' roll. Another stimulating aspect of the book is how

The 1950s Rock 'N' Roll Movement
Introduction
The 1950s rock 'n' roll movement was rooted from a style of music created by black people and
their descendants (Scaruffi, 2005). The lives of Americans were changed, as the older generation
looked down upon this genre and life style, while the young generation fell in love with it
("America," 2008). Artist of the 1950s played a huge roll in the ideas that influenced every aspect of
it such as legends Buddy Holly and Little Richard. From moral changes to political changes rock 'n'
roll arrived to America ready to make an everlasting impact (Stewart, 2008). Although the decades
have passed, and the times have changed rock 'n' roll holds a legacy that will forever impact the
lives of people as a whole.
Foundations Of Rock n' Roll
After World War 2, the world was faced with a bipolar world of the two winners: the USSR and the
US (Scaruffi, 2005). The world was left with international bitterness and resentment and unlike
other wars, a war on ideology. The war changed almost every aspect of life, because ideologies and
morals began to shift and change. The post–War era had brought along with it many new
technologies such as the boom of cars, computers and even ... Show more content on

Rock 'n' roll was not a specific genre but it led to many different genres and styles of music to be
created. Since rock 'n' roll was founded on the basis of folk and blues many of the first artists were
black, but were given little credit at the time such as Little Richard, whose song "Tutti Frutti" was
covered by Pat Boone, and topped higher on music charts ("Music," 2004). The first rock 'n' roll
band was formed (the Comets) by white artist Bill Haley in 1952, and they quickly began to climb
Billboard charts making the first rock 'n' roll song to enter the Billboard charts (Scaruffi, 2005). The
Comets showed that rock 'n' roll was an instant hit,and there was a big audience hungry to get more

Rock N Roll Music Comparison
To compare Chuck Berry's Rock 'N' Roll Music with Elvis Presley's Hound Dog would be similar to
comparing a granny smith to a golden delicious. Both are apples, and look fairly similar but have a
noticeable difference in texture and taste after the first bite. With almost a decade between both
songs, the exterior shows two songs which are noted as strong contributors to the genre of rock 'n'
roll, following very similar conventions and a focus on the same audience. Yet with a keen ear some
significant changes between the instruments and utilization thereof can be heard. Both songs are
arguably very similar, with a few minor changes that can make a significant difference. One of the
most notable differences is heard almost instantly in the instruments used. Although both songs
utilize the usual suspects, guitar, bass and drums alongside a strong vocal. Yet, a smooth sounding
piano can be heard in the background of Rock 'n' Roll Music providing a consistent and fast riff in
the background. This is substituted in Hound Dog with hand clapping providing a quick and catchy
beat. What this accomplishes is a much more informal feel to Hound Dog, as if something you
would hear being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whilst Rock 'n' Roll Music follows a more traditional route, Hound Dog has an interesting sound
behind the guitar, one of which could be compared almost to that of a steel guitar, as was popular
during the time period, through a method involving minor modifications to the neck of the guitar.
Elvis Presley combines this with his unique vocals, almost as if being able to produce the high and
the low pitches, the bass and the tenor simultaneously. It is this combination of a Hawaiian feel
behind a uniquely powerful vocal which not only separates Rock 'n' Roll Music and Hound Dog, but
also the sound that launched Elvis Presley into rock n' roll stardom in a way few can

Rock N Roll Changed Music
Rock n Roll was everything the suburban 1950's were not. While parents of the decade were
listening to Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and the Big Bands. Their children were moving on to a new
beat." (U.S. History) Teenagers started to like this new type of music called rock and roll. It became
very popular and artists started to experiment with it which influenced the development of rock n
roll throughout the 50's and 60's. The experimentation with rock n roll changed music forever and
greatly influenced our music today. Rock n roll was mixed with country, rhythm, and blues when
this combination happened rock n roll kept developing through the fifties and sixties. Rock n roll
came from the mix of country and rhythm and blues. The origins of rock n roll can be traced back to
when the great migration brought African Americans to the U.S. with them they brought a different
sound for music. After the great migration, new genres of music began to become very popular in
the late 1920's and 1930's. These genres of music influenced the development of rock n roll such as
blues, boogie–woogie, jump blues, jazz, and gospel music "Rock n Roll developed from blues and
country so no one invented rock n roll" ( Tim Janis) Rock n roll was definitely influenced by
African American roots. The African music tradition of storytelling using music of African origins
was a big influence on the creation of blues and other genres. These genres of music soon developed
into rhythm and blues. Later

Rock N Roll Persuasive Speech
If you believe in the real underground of Rock 'N' Roll, then now is the time to do something about
it. The time is now to overthrow the current situations and declare war on the record companies,
radio stations, publications, clubs, and anyone who promotes the whole so called "scene" as it now
stands. We need to destroy it all and take it back from the corporate phonies and conformist. But
action must be taken now and blood must be spilled. First let me tell you who I am. I was born Jesus
Christ Allin in 1956 in Lancaster, NH. The Jesus Christ they preach about in the Bible is a phony
imposter – just a crutch for the cripples to lean on. Fuck that weak shit! I am the man to deal with. I
created myself inside the womb from the fires of Hell. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So called cutting edge radio stations as fucking lame as the stations they oppose. Censorship
publications kissing the monkey suits asses, who in turn, are kissing someone else's ass. Even so
called "underground" publications have no fucking desire to get blood on their hands. They are too
busy crying about how we can make the world a more wonderful place and how politically correct
they can be. Talk is fucking cheap. It's time to fight. It's time for revenge. We need to overthrow
Rock 'N' Roll as it now stands. We must bring down record companies by not buying their products.
A boycot. If you have to have a record, steal it. That way they wont get your money. We've got to
stop feeding them. Your support must now go to me – GG Allin, the commanding leader and
terrorist of Rock 'N' Roll. Why do you think I am in prison right now? Because they know who I am
and they fear my reality. Our society wants to stop my mission. They want to brain wash you and
keep you locked into MTV, and their stagnating, safe worlds. It's a plot to kill Rock 'N' Roll. I am
the savior. Thats why I am considered a threat to society. This is what you should do: Go to your
record store and buy all the GG ALLIN recordings you can find. If they dont have any in

Rock ‘N’ Roll Music Has Widely Influenced Music And Society

  • 1. Rock ‘N’ Roll Music Has Widely Influenced Music And Society Rock 'n' roll music has widely influenced music and society and continues to do so today. Rock 'n' roll emerged in the 1950's a time where whites and blacks were heavily segregated. Rock and roll music not only changed the nation's current musical norms, but indicated the joy of the emerging youth culture of the generation. It influenced artists whether black or white to come into the mainstream music. Famous artists still remembered today also influenced rock and roll. Those pioneers helped change the musical norms and the overall history of music. White rock 'n' rollers helped build a ladder for black artists to come into the scene. It was certain that rock 'n' roll made it possible for greater acceptance, appreciation and a wider ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "When first entering in America, British folk music was distinguished by three–chord tunes, sparse instrumentation (with some fiddlers), mostly male performers, improvisation, the singers' sporadic shouts (Scottish "yips"), Christian themes served up in hundreds of hymns, and a secular collection of songs that told stories, generally about love and lost love, using metaphor and symbol to tell those stories" (Allen 101). By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, British music changed and became Americanized. Vocal harmonizing slowly evolved, and fiddlers were accompanied by those who played banjo, an African American opening. "Tambourines and "bones" (tapping out rhythms using pork rib bones) were a minstrel show contribution" (Allen 102). When African Americans were forced into slavery and brought to North America in the 1600s, they brought their own musical traditions and sounds. Slaves who were on the Mississippi River Valley delta soil developed what will later be introduced as blues music. On the plantations, slaves greatly changed British American hymn singing. They took non–religious British American songs and turned it into their own forms of music that followed their culture and taste of music. Blues emerged in the early twentieth century at the same time country music became settled from its folk roots. Blues music talked about the indifferences African American slaves were going through at that time. "The blues voiced human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Impact of Rock 'n' Roll on the Civil Rights Movement It was no coincidence that rock 'n' roll and the civil rights movement started at the same time. The genre originated from African American music and was greatly discriminated against. Traditional white Americans would target anything bad about it. But as the teenager demographic of the 1950s started increasing the sales of the music, the genre started gaining more popularity. It was the style of Elvis Presley and his new voice that made girls weak in the knees and boys want to be him. • 4. Rock N Roll On American Culture Music is often considered "the universal language." Throughout history, it has symbolized love, brought people together, and mobilized millions. In the 1950s, a new form of music entered the American music industry that drastically changed the culture of the United States (U.S.): rock music. In the U.S., it began as rock 'n' roll, an originally "black" music genre that was then taken and promulgated by white Americans. After World War II (WWII), many Americans–especially teenagers–struggled with the newfound societal conformity and normalcy, and rock provided them with a form of rebellion. Before the 1960s, black artists were largely ignored, and black music frequently only gained popularity if a white artist covered it.4 The Motown Record Company, located in Detroit, turned this all on its head. Motown's owner, Berry Gordy Jr. groomed and prepared his company's artists for mainstream success by studying successful white artists, polling on the street for interest in certain sounds, and having "Quality Control," in which every song had to be approved by Gordy and a panel of other company members.5 Motown, also known as "Hitsville USA," helped stars like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and William "Smokey" Robinson make it big in an industry where white individuals dominated. Moreover, the "British Invasion" of the 1960s, in which British Rock bands such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones captured the hearts of millions of Americans, led not only to a decrease in the former national sentiment of U.S. superiority, but also, increased respect for black music.6 Musicians like the Beatles–who initially covered black American artists' songs such as Anna (Go to Him) by Arthur Alexander–claimed that American rock 'n' roll served as a initial model for their music.7 This led to a small but meaningful increase in the credibility of black artists in the U.S. music scene as Americans began questioning the importance of an artist's ... Altschuler attempts to tell the reader what rock 'n' roll is and how it changed America forever. Altschuler begins his book by describing how the vast majority of white parents viewed rock 'n' roll during this time. The majority of parents believed rock 'n' roll to be a "communicable disease" that caused their children to behave like hoodlums. The parents even began to ban rock 'n' roll shows from coming to their towns in hope that it would stop their children from listening to the music. It also struck fear in the heart of parents of young women. This was primarily the case because parents believed that rock 'n' roll caused a sense of sexual tension to arise in their children. The next part of Altschuler's book discusses the social impact rock 'n' roll had on the population of America. One major concern for the white majority of the population was that they feared that the African American population was using rock 'n' roll in an attempt to integrate and assimilate into white society. Significant Impact On The Development Of Rock N Roll Ava Gurba 7/24/15 MUS 109 Rock Music Midterm Exam Both the radio and records have had significant impact on the development on rock n' roll. Similarly, the radio and records gave musical artists an extended ability to stretch their audiences. Strongly intertwined, while they both gave listeners the ability to find artists they like, there are some clear differences between each the developments of the radio and that of records. In the years prior, the music industry was built on the "Tin Pan Alley" system that strictly controlled musicians and popular music (Schloss, Starr, and Waterman, p. 2–7). And much like the spirit of rock n' roll itself, people within the industry eventually grew tired of conformity and no longer felt the need to follow the rules. Radio stations started forming separate licensing companies (BMI), which allowed them to play what they want (Schloss, Starr, and Waterman, p. 7). With an "open door" policy that allowed broadcasters to play music they wanted, radio stations had the important job of sharing a variety of music that could be heard all across the country. The radio began to function as a way of transporting records and genres of music all over the country from the traditional cultures they formed, which includes R&B, blues, and country. This reshaped the music industry by expanding its reach to new audiences. This, "allowed songwriters working outside of mainstream pop to claim royalties on the use of their songs on broadcasted ... Historiography and Approach The theme of teenage rebellion is prominent among early rock 'n' roll historians, who imposed the language and social consciousness of the late–1960s onto their interpretations. According to them, rock 'n' roll in the 1950s enabled teenagers to protest against the conformity of the era and also their parents' music. Arnold Shaw in The Rockin' 50s considered teens' rejection of pop music an outcry against Cold War acquiescence.[3] Carl Belz claimed rock 'n' roll was folk art that functioned as a voice of the people, namely teenagers. Like Shaw, Belz saw rock 'n' roll as a "protest art" against prevailing popular music.[4] Rock 'n' roll also displayed that it was folk art because its audience was drawn to it instinctively, rather than through sophisticated aesthetic standards for judging the music; the dance beat was more important than musical technicalities.[5] For these historians, listening to rock 'n' roll was an act of rebellion precisely because the adult audience and the press condemned the music. In outlining this rebellion, historians like Belz, Shaw, and Gillett ignored the social significance of Afro–American music finding an audience in white middle–class teenagers. Gillett offered a rosy but weak prognosis that the white audience, by virtue of being a minority audience, bridged racial gaps by taking on a radical stance against majority tastes.[6] ... Rock n Roll & 20th Century Culture Essay Rock 'n' roll and 20th Century Culture According to Philip Ennis, rock 'n' roll emerged from the convergence of social transformations which resulted from World War II (Ryan 927). Despite its pop culture origins, rock music is arguably one of the strongest cultural factors to develop in this century. Artists such as Lennon, McCartney and Dylan defined the emotions of a generation and, in the last decade, it as even been acknowledged by members of the establishment which it hoped to change as a major influence in the country. Rock 'n' roll music came of age in the sixties which was a period in the nation's history when a young generation expressed their anguish and sense of alienation to the country's social establishments by searching for new answers to the age–old questions concerning the meaning of life, the value of the individual, and the nature of truth and spirituality (Harris 306). The classic rock music which was created during this period gave form and substance to this search. Songs such as "My Generation" by the Who recorded the keen sense of alienation that young people felt from the past and the "Establishment" and it also showed the keen sense of community they felt among themselves. Classic albums such as the Beatles' "White Album," the Who's "Who's Next," Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited, and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" capture what was essential about the time because they were both a result of that time and because they helped to produce it by reinforcing the younger generation's feelings of alienation and separation. But although the forms remained, something wholly new and original was made out of these older elements – more original, perhaps, than even the new musicians themselves yet realize. The transformation took place in 1966–7. Up to that time, the blues had been an essentially black medium. Rock'n'roll, a blues derivative, was rhythmic, raunchy, teen–age dance music. Folk music, old and modern, was popular among college students. The three forms remained musically and culturally distinct, and even as late as 1965, none of them were expressing any radically new states of consciousness. Blues expressed black soul; rock, as made famous by Elvis Presley, was the beat of youthful sensuality; and folk music, with such singers as Joan Baez, expressed anti–war sentiments as well as the universal themes of love and ...
