Identifying and Applying Sources of Power
"I am more afraid of an army of 100 sheep led by a lion than an army of 100 lions led by a sheep"
(Talleyrand). The significance of leadership can be summed up so soundly in such a simple quote.
Leadership can be defined in countless ways, but one way to identify a leader is as a person who can
positively or negatively affect the thoughts and behaviors of others. A leader is someone who forms
the direction for others to readily follow. One person may be identified as a leader or several may
share it. An individual may be appointed as leader or they may be elected. Leaders can influence
others to perform beyond the expectations. It is not just a wide spread concept, but a way of life and
an aspect of continuous evolution. Trying to narrow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has been determined that the basis of legitimacy must first come from the acceptance of the
individual and acknowledgment of the asserted power. Three values have a significant part in this
process. The first one involves the cultural values that can often influence an individual. The
importance of age and elders is on example. Another factor is the acceptance of the social structure
or the hierarchy of authority. The final source of legitimate power is the designation by a
legitimizing agent (Asherman & Asherman, 2001). Some may accept someone else's role of
leadership and power based on who gave them that position. There are many varied example one
could come up with for legitimate power. It can be seen in various settings, two of which came to
mind. In the military, structure is based heavily on rank and position. It is something that is earned
and not just given. One must work hard to move up in rank and that is a well–known, and a well–
accepted aspect. The difference between enlisted service members and commissioned officers is
another example. Although, between officers and enlisted members there is often variations of age,
length of time in service, and knowledge, when the military bestows an officer position the power of
the role is recognized and accepted by all. Another example was in my first field placement at a
nursing home. Even

The Pros and Cons of Nuclear Power as an Energy Source Essay
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Nuclear Power Plants as an
Energy Source
Nuclear power is the use of continuous nuclear reactions to do practical work. It is produced by
nuclear fission reactions which occur when adequate quantities of Uranium–235 are restricted to a
small area. Nuclear fission is the process of nuclei being split. In this case a heavier nucleus splits
up into two or more lighter nuclei, then this moves on by a chain reaction when the emitted neutrons
go on to split the other nuclei. Heat is produced by the reaction, which is then converted to Kinetic
energy by a steam turbine and finally by a generator to produce electricity.
There are several advantages with using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Careless disposal of nuclear waste leads to pollution of rivers, lakes, land and ocean. A further
disadvantage is that the nuclear power stations can be dangerous to some parts of the world. Despite
reassurances that nuclear power plants are safe, serious accidents have happened. A good example
of this is the accident that occurred in Chernobyl, 1986. The accident was a result of a defective
reactor design that was operated by improperly trained employees, without suitable regard of safety.
This caused the immediate death of 40 people and 130 getting radiation sicknesses. A different
strong reason for the disadvantage of nuclear power plants is that the power station is extremely
expensive to build. Once the power station is built, the costs for electricity throughout the station are
tremendously high.
The topic of using nuclear power plants is controversial. As written before, there are several
disadvantages and as well advantages that contribute to the building of nuclear power plants. So the
question asked is if people should use nuclear power to produce energy or not. It is obvious that
nuclear energy has several advantages, for example it is cheap and makes a large amount of energy
with a small amount of fuel. Energy can be provided

Nuclear Power, A Source Of Environmentally Clean Energy
With cartoons of many eyed fish; neon green tubes of uranium; and ominous images of dark,
billowing smoke, nuclear energy is a source of great misconception and mythology. TV shows such
as The Simpsons, and notable disasters such as Fukushima and Chernobyl have left many citizens
around the world in fear of nuclear anything. However, these depictions and accidents are not a
typical representation of what nuclear energy can do for the world. Climate change feels looming
and environmental concerns are growing in the general public and demand for clean energy source
is justly rising. Nuclear power is a safe source of environmentally clean energy that is a worthwhile
investment for the American government and its people.
The United States has seen two distinct eras of nuclear power: The first between 1960 and 1980 and
the second with the Nuclear Renaissance starting around 2001. In the 1960's nuclear energy was a
new and exciting source of power. Though public opinion was generally positive, debate and
concern for safety existed. In 2001, nuclear power began to rise in the United States again with
climate change concerns surfaces (world–nuclear.org). The industry expanded further 4 years later
with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 under George W. Bush. This policy granted 4 billion dollars in
loans and tax credits. Further acts increased the subsidies for clean energy loans (the majority of
which being for nuclear energy sources) to 7 billion (Edmund, Wald). In 2012, 31 license

Nuclear Power : A Mainstream Source Of Electricity
Nuclear power has been slow to become a mainstream source of electricity in the world. Despite the
fact that Nuclear power is arguably the most capable source of continuous, clean energy; the
industry has been held back by safety and financial concerns. Current nuclear power plants, so–
called Generation II reactors, are currently the largest source of carbon free electricity in the United
States according to the Department of Energy (DoE).
Only second to safety concerns, financing is vitally important to nuclear power's success. To this
end, the NuScale SMR (Small Modular Reactor) has numerous economic and industrial benefits
over contemporary, large–scale, nuclear power plants. Recent estimates for the cost of building a

This means that a reactor would supply a facility with a large amount of power, instead of that
electricity coming from the grid. A few examples would be desalination of water, nitrogen fixation,
and oil refining[1]. As shown before, building a Gen II reactor is a huge undertaking of both time
and money. Therefore, the companies that finance them are focused on maximizing the power
output upon completion. There was no economical reason to customize the energy output for a
specific need, so nuclear energy was resigned to supply the grid exclusively. The problem with
producing energy to the grid is that a lot of it is lost in transportation and distribution. The Energy
Information Association (EIA) estimates that about six percent of all energy production to the grid
in the US is wasted in this way[6]. Direct power does not factor into this calculation, so increasing
its use will not decrease that percentage. What it will do is decrease the amount of energy the grid
needs to supply by a significant amount, thus reducing the amount of waste. Industry accounts for
about twenty percent of energy used in the US, none of which is supplied by Nuclear power[9].
Other alternative energy sources, like wind and solar, fail to adequately address the needs of
factories that need continuous and large amounts of electricity. The EIA has invested a lot of money

Nuclear Fusion a Feasible Source of Power Essay example
Is Nuclear Fusion a Feasible Source of Power?
Abstract:
Nuclear fusion may be an effective solution to the energy problem in today?s world. Fusion is
environmentally friendly and has the potential to generate massive amounts of power. It is evident
that the Sun?s power is fueled by nuclear fusion. Recent advancements such as ITER and NIF may
bring us closer to being able to use fusion. We find that nuclear fusion is a long–term solution to a
continuing problem.
Introduction:
Since the Industrial Age, energy from fossil fuels has become widespread. In recent times, the
depletion of fossil fuels is forcing humanity to search for other alternatives, such as nuclear fusion.
Fusion has been an attractive method of energy for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scientists aim to gain knowledge and improve the power output, the time duration, and the energy
cost.
Nuclear fusion is a process that occurs when two hydrogen isotopes (tritium and deuterium) fuse
together. This reaction produces a neutron and also a large amount of energy. However, a massive
amount of heat is necessary for the reaction to initiate because the nuclei (which have very strong
opposing charges) must fuse together. The temperature necessary for this to occur is over one
hundred million degrees Kelvin. When the reaction occurs, the energy is so great that it is very
difficult to contain. So far the known methods of containment are magnetic confinement and inertial
confinement. The magnetic confinement uses a very powerful magnetic field, and the inertial
confinement uses the inertia of the reaction.
(Figure 1, wikipedia, ?nuclear fusion?) We will investigate published literature that either supports
or reflects if fusion is feasible. We believe fusion would be a feasible source of power if it could
produce reasonably more energy that is put in.
Results and Discussion
There are several methods to create nuclear fusion for power. The most successful is the star, which
uses gravity and pressure to fuse hydrogen and create helium.
Unfortunately we cannot harness a sun and harvest it on earth for raw fusion energy.
However, we can create small reactions similar to that of the sun in the lab and turn the radiant

The Energy Source Of Nuclear Power
Nuclear Power
It is no question that the US is incredibly reliant on energy. In 2014 alone, the US used 98.324
quadrillion BTUs of energy. According to the US Energy Information Administration, Roughly 82%
of that was fossil fuels. Renewable resources accounted for 10%, including solar, wind,
hydroelectric, and more, and the remaining 8% was nuclear power. This energy powered our
televisions and drove our cars. Unfortunately, our reliance on fossil fuels brings with it serious side
effects, including global warming. When fossil fuel is burned, greenhouse gases are released. These
gases harm the environment and contribute to global warming. Global warming can have serious
side effects, including melting of the polar ice caps, and acidification of oceans. Because of these
issues, a new industry took shape; alternative energy. These energy sources are alternatives to fossil
fuels, and do not cause pollution. One powerful alternative energy source is nuclear power. Nuclear
power should be used to replace fossil fuels, as it does not pollute and is the most concentrated form
of energy.
Fossil fuels, a natural fuel formed from the remains of living organisms, has its benefits. It is easily
available, and can produce large amounts of energy. It is abundantly available and is currently
necessary to power millions of cars worldwide. It is easy to set up plants, and can be harvested at a
very low cost. Unfortunately, these benefits come at a high price. Burning fossil fuels creates

Nuclear Power : An Alternative Energy Source
Nuclear power is an alternative energy source with the visage of being clean and reliable, but also
dangerous. Nuclear power as an energy source emerged after 1956, and is formed in a process called
nuclear fission, in which a nucleus of an atom is split resulting in a large output of usable energy
(World Nuclear Association). The decision to pursue the path of nuclear energy and to what extent is
a highly debated topic in which experts are forced to weigh the risks and the rewards. The outcome
of the nuclear energy debate can result either in a seemingly limitless supply of clean energy, or the
decimation of hundreds of thousands of innocent human and animal lives due to nuclear meltdowns.
In a time of shifting global pressures, a constant energy supply is vital to the well–being of a nation,
and can alleviate many of the pressures faced by a nation and its occupants. However, nuclear power
provides the anchor that prevents a nation from becoming trapped in the malicious vortex of global
energy struggles. Even so, critics of nuclear power discover problems with this form of energy, and
their concerns are enough to entice global outcries against nuclear power. It is critical for the
dangers of nuclear power to be taken seriously, but careful planning and rational thinking supersede
many of the irrational views toward this form of energy. There is no "one solution" to the nuclear
energy problem, but there are viable options for each scenario that can entail countless

Wind Power as an Alternate Energy Source

ABSTRACT
The United States' main source of energy is currently fossil fuels. However, we know that fossil fuel
supply continues to deplete and sooner or later, the United States will need to resort to a new source
of energy. This report hopes to explore the advantages and disadvantages of wind power using
model regions. These regions have experience in using wind power, which may help us determine
whether or not it is a suitable source of energy when fossil fuels are completely drained. From
examining Denmark and other places benefiting from this clean and unlimited source of wind
power, we believe that the
United States possesses enough wind, money, and other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Because of this, companies consider building windmills offshore where there are less obstacles and
constant wind. The power of the windmill does not only depend on the speed of the wind, but also
the swept area, and the density of the air. Windmills are as equally effective as coal plants,
converting 30–40% of the wind?s kinetic energy into electricity (Wind Energy––Energy from
Moving Air, 2005). Scientists like German physicist Albert Betz have said that a windmill may
convert 59% of the energy from wind (Wikipedia, 2005). According to some designers for
windmills, even though windmills do lose some wind energy, they still produce constant energy.
Capacity, however, is somewhat lower; sitting at about 30–35% (Wind Energy––Energy from
Moving Air, 2005).
The declining supply of fossil fuels and the increasing pollution resulting from its use threatens our
nation with a crisis. While fossil fuels can still supply the world its energy for now, the depletion of
fossil fuels will force us to find an alternative source of energy.
Scientists believe this will happen by 2050 (Food, Land, Population, and the US
Economy). The purpose of the lab report is to examine wind power by weighing its pros and cons to
determine whether or not this can be a good source of energy when we do run out of fuel.
Since developing an experiment is impossible for our studies, we will be looking at specific places

centuries to provide peace and calm; however the use of animals in a structured therapy
environment is a new type of idea that has been researched. Using animals as a healing source is
animal therapy, which can be used as aids for many types of people. Whether it be a dog, cat, bird,
rabbit, or even a horse, all types of animals can be trained to help the emotional and physical health
of many in simple and extraordinary ways. The use of animal therapy with highly trained animals

The benefits can be extraordinary with an activity using animals but can be poorly suited for a
person who may be extremely stressed in public events or does not fare well with an overwhelming
excitement of a public event. These type of individuals would be better accommodated in a one on
one therapy session with an animal used as an aid.
These types of individuals in a private therapy situation are using the other type of animal therapy
which is officially called Animal Assisted Therapy or AAT. Animal Assisted therapy is tailored to
one specific person in a meeting with a therapy professional with the aid and assistance of an
animal. The animal, usually being a dog, is used to treat a client on a personal level and is used as a
tool in a session of therapy. An example of AAT is having a dog for a client to stroke in a therapy
session to relax and have the person be more open and trusting of the therapist they are working
with. The aid of animals in therapy can be used to help treat emotion issues as well as physical
issues in the types of therapy the animal is used with.
Before an animal can be used in any type of therapy situation, it must be trained to specifically
respond to certain situations calmly and not hinder a client's betterment. Especially when using
dogs, most of the time untrained animals are not acclimated to reactions of

Effects of Nuclear Power
Nuclear power is on the rise as it is a cleaner alternative to other energies; nations are trying to
increase the production of energy from nuclear power in order to go 'Green' and to save the
environment and the ozone layer from greenhouse gases. Other energy resources utilize fossil fuels
such as coal and petroleum and create large amounts of greenhouse gases. However, nuclear Energy
is extremely dangerous as plants can suffer from catastrophic meltdowns and even explosions.
Nuclear energy also produces dangerous radioactive waste which has to be stored on the nuclear
plant site. The use of Nuclear power leaves behind an enormous amount of waste to be dealt with by
a later generation. Without an increase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only do plants endanger the surrounding community from meltdowns and nuclear explosions,
but they could also serve as possible targets for terrorists. The radius of an explosion from a nuclear
plant could send fallout to surrounding cities deeming them inhabitable. The Chernobyl incident
resulted in seventy–seven thousand square miles being contaminated with radioactive fallout and
fifty deaths of workers from radiation poisoning. (Horgan) To this day, after almost twenty five
years, the area of Chernobyl in the Ukraine remains a ghost town. These dangers suggest that maybe
nuclear power is not the best route to take when looking for alternate forms of energy. The average
American gets over six hundred Millirems per year from the atmosphere, cosmic rays, and even
consumer products. (Horgan) "Federal Regulations permit nuclear workers to receive up to five
thousand Millirems a year... there is no clear cut evidence of adverse health effects from radiation at
levels below one hundred thousand Millirems a year." (Horgan) Horgan even goes on to state "In
short, I'm staying on the nuclear bandwagon, but I'm not encouraging anyone to join me." (p.n.)
Horgan says this because he understands the dangers of nuclear power that have been shown in the
past; however he also understands the need for safer and 'greener' energy resources to save the
environment.

Nuclear Power
Just about every part of today's society involves energy of some sorts. But as our society progresses,
the need for better, more efficient power sources must be addressed. Out of all of the choices, the
most popular to date is nuclear power. Nuclear power is a growing industry that is getting mixed
reviews from various sources. But which side is right? Is nuclear power the future? Or is it just
another problem the world will have to deal with? The answer is simple. Nuclear Energy is the
future and will power almost the entire world one day. Nuclear power is the best source of power
because it produces lots of power, it produces clean energy, it is cheap, and it is sustainable. Before
that though, a bit of history about nuclear energy. In 1789, Uranium was discovered by a German
chemist named Martin Klaproth. Later on in 1902 Ernest Rutherford, discovered how radioactivity
as a spontaneous event emits an alpha or beta particle from the nucleus that creates a different
element. In 1919 he wanted a better understanding of atoms, so he fired alpha particles from a
radium source into nitrogen and found that nuclear rearrangement was occurring, with formation of
oxygen. Niels Bohr also did work to help better understand the work of atoms in the 1940s (Perera).
Nuclear fission (the process that generates nuclear power) was discovered by Lisa Meitner and Otto
Frisch. They were studying a puzzling result

Theories Of Leadership : The Five Sources Of Power In...
Theories of motivation
The evaluation of power and influence has showed that they are closely related to the leadership
style that Carlos Slim lead. The five sources of power have categorized in two different category,
one is positional or organizational power consisting of legitimate, rewards and coercive; and the
remaining is personal power including expert and referent power (Combe, 2014). The personal
power is studied as more regarded in employee satisfaction, commitment, loyalty as well as job
performance (Lunenburg, 2012).
Sources of Power
Power is a source of ability to control other's actions (Combe, 2014). French and Raven had
originally developed the most influential theories in purpose of determining the sources of power
that leaders use to influence others. The five sources of power consist of coercive, reward and
legitimate where categorized in positional or organizational power; expert and referent are the
sources of power which categorized in personal power (French & Raven, 2004). Generally saying,
the personal power is more regarded to the job satisfaction of the employees, the commitment of the
organization, and job performance (Lunenburg, 2012). In contrast, the coercive power is a power
depending on fear which brings negatively consequences (Combe, 2014). Even though, these
sources of power have been defined their own definition, these powers should not be completely
separate from each other. Carlos Slim is a model leader who applies those powers together

A reliable energy source for the future
India is on the move. Indeed, one of the primary reasons why we are even having this competition is
a result of the 8% plus annual GDP growth over the last 8 years. This growth has been driven by
strong domestic demand, and with that electricity consumption per capita has doubled from
355KWh in 2000 to 720kWh by 2009. This is a huge increase, but in absolute terms is puny when
compared to other countries globally, being only 20% and 3% of the figures for China and America
respectively. Juxtapose this with the deplorable fact that about 400 million people are yet to be
connected to the electricity grid and the writing is on the wall. In this regard it's best to compare

Sure, solar cells are a tremendously active research area and there are improvements being made
every day. But even taking this into account, it is not conceivable that solar cells, even when pushed
to the limit, will replace conventional sources of energy in even the medium term. Compare the
ambitious 20,000 MW goal for 2020 with the overall target of 62,500 MW for 2012 and the scales
are clear. While solar energy could prove to be significant locally to states like Gujarat and
Rajasthan, on a national level, solar energy cannot be our main source of energy for the next 20
years or so.
This basically leaves two options for policy makers in India; continue with our traditional reliance
on thermal power (with a new emphasis on gas based plants) or consider taking a bolder move and
placing more emphasis on nuclear power, despite the much larger initial barriers. In my view, there
are strong reasons for opting for the latter, which I will detail in the paragraphs below.
India abounds with coal. Indeed, this is the only fossil fuel we have a huge supply of. Beneath the
ground in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Orissa lies about 10% of the known reserves, making India
the 3rd largest coal producer in the world. With reserves enough to last for at least another 100
years, it is no surprise then that post–Independence a huge emphasis was placed on enhanced
production and

Wind Power Generation : Renewable Energy Source
Wind Power Generation
In the 21st Century, fossil fuels are becoming increasingly important, with the demand for these
resources increasing, despite the knowledge that they are finite. Globally, the annual consumption of
fossil fuels is eleven billion tonnes, with crude oil reserves waning at a rate of four billion tonnes
per year. If these figures experience little change in coming years, oil reserves are estimated to
completely deplete by 2052 (Ecotricity.co.uk, 2014). Other options are available to replace non–
renewable energy sources, one of these options being wind turbines, as they are the obvious option
to be used as energy sources as wind is without charge. Wind power requires harnessing energy
from the wind, and using it to generate electricity. According to Blue–energyco.com (2014), wind
power generation is the fastest growing renewable energy source universally, as evidenced by the
growth rate which stands at 25% in over a decade with the total capacity currently exceeding 60 000
MW (Fox, B. (2007) Wind power integration, page 1). Explaining how wind turbines works is really
simple, what happens is
Wind causes the blades of the turbines to rotate
Blade rotation cause the low speed shaft to rotate
Low speed shaft is connected to a gear box which turns causing some other gears inside the turbine
to rotate
These gears inside the turbine in turn, turn the generator
Rotational energy is actually needed to rotate the generator

History
Since 1939 when Hahn and Strassman found that fission released energy and neutrons to help
uranium nuclei to be a self–sustaining chain reaction that would lead to an enormous release of
energy (WNA), harassing nuclear fission become an important part in creating a nuclear bomb. The
government had control over all nuclear research and began the Manhattan Project. "In June 1942
the US Army took over process development, engineering design, procurement of materials and site
selection for pilot plants for four methods of making fissionable material" (WNA). Until after World
War II nuclear reactors were harnessing nuclear power for other reasons than for electricity. After
World War II the idea of using nuclear energy for good, rather than for war was a reason not to keep
all nuclear research controlled by military organizations. Electricity was generated for the first time
by a nuclear reactor on December 20, 1951 near Arco, Idaho.

Nuclear Power : A New Energy Source Essay
The steam spun the wheel of the turbine with a Whoosh. The ecstasy of finding a new energy source
is ineffable, and when found, the discovery always immediately prompts a race to use this newfound
source. In accordance with this behavior, many sought to integrate nuclear power into society upon
its development. The difference being nuclear energy is far more complicated and powerful than
anything the field of energy has dealt with thus far. There are two types of nuclear reactions, fission
and fusion; working reactors only using fission currently. In fission a neutron reacts with Uranium–
235 to produce energy, two fragment nuclei, and multiple neutrons to continue the reaction.
Meanwhile, in fusion two hydrogen isotopes react to produce energy, protons, neutrons, and
Helium. As a consequence of these processes ' complex and formidable natures, there is a hesitance
to their utilization as it is difficult to discuss the complexities of the procedures with the public
without some misinterpretation. Despite the benefits found in nuclear power, it still undergoes harsh
debate as governments oppose giving money to such an unexplored area of science. Yet, an increase
in funding for U.S. nuclear programs would prompt advancements that replace less effective energy
sources, creating opportunities for specialization in the field.
The most relevant portion of this subject is fission due to current use standards. Nuclear fission

The Sources Of Personal And Positional Power
This paper discusses the sources of personal and positional power and identifies the most influential
power to have in a professional working environment. Leadership is the utilization of power and
leaders must establish appropriate organizational power bases to effectively exercise power to
influence people they lead. Great leaders have a vision to achieve large–scale ideas and they possess
the power to transform visions into reality. When a leader uses their power in an ethical and
responsible way, the goals of the organization will be achieved and leadership will be able to
develop effective organizational and interpersonal relationships.
Power can be defined as the ability to influence others towards a common goal. Power has always
been interconnected with the perception of leadership, as a person can employ their power while not
being a leader, but cannot be a leader without power. A leader can use their power to accomplish
goals and inspire those they lead to produce superior performance. Leaders make important
decisions and safeguard the integrity of the organization. There can be several types of personal and
positional power that an effective leader can develop to achieve and retain the position of influence.
However, the appropriate and effective use of these sources of power is left open to the
interpretation of each individual leader. Attaining organizational goals that will have an overall
positive impact on that organization will require effective

Sources of Power in The Michigan Department of Corrections
The Michigan Department of Corrections is an extremely important organization in the state of
Michigan. The Michigan Department of Corrections is a very large organization and has several
different branches. The Michigan Department of Corrections is a very established organization. It
was founded in 1953 due to a legislative change known as the PA 232. (Source) PA 232 is also
known as the Department of Corrections Act and it established a statewide, formal department of
corrections. The Michigan Department has since undergone various changes in its structure, but
continues to be highly functioning and effective. (Source). The Michigan Department of Corrections
has evolved over time into the organization it is now. There have been many instances where things
have changed in order to keep up with the changing times. While 1953 was when the MDOC was
formally founded, there have been elements of a correctional system in Michigan long before, as
early as the 1800s. However, the current Michigan Department of Corrections bears no resemblance
to the very early organization that was created in the 1800s (Source) In 1837 after the creation of the
state of Michigan, the very first correctional system was born. A committee was selected to build

Nuclear Energy As An Alternative Power Source
Nuclear Powered Vehicles
Does an energy source such as nuclear energy have the potential to change the way Americans, and
the world for that matter, move from place to place? This technology is very tempting, although it is
extremely expensive; the long lasting benefits are remarkable. This technology may seem
revolutionary, but it is still in the beginning stages. Many people would question the thought of
stepping foot in a nuclear vehicle. Could this plan of nuclear energy in vehicles put Americans at
more risk than it is worth? The idea of using nuclear energy is not a new doctrine, yet it still seems
to raise some questions. The concept of using nuclear energy as an alternative power source is
becoming drastically evident in the U.S. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even if the reactor would fit in the car, the amount of nuclear radiation given off would require
several tons of steel to protect the driver. Needless to say, the concept car never caught on.
Even though, throughout the '50s and '60s, several companies tried their hand at producing a nuclear
powered car, none of them were ever successful. Over the last sixty years, no one has ever been able
to build a fully functioning car powered by only nuclear energy (Sebastian). A nuclear car may not
have been feasible in the '60s, but the military had a limited number of nuclear powered ships. The
N.S. Savannah was one of the few nuclear powered ships that the U.S. owned; the idea of these
ships never caught on. The ships released small traces of nuclear waste into the ocean and the idea
of radiation in the ocean made many people uneasy (Sebastian). In the '60s, the U.S. military
possessed nuclear ships such as ice breakers and destroyers; once these ships went out of
commission, they were no longer made, and the nuclear energy age ended as fast as it had begun in
America.
The idea behind powering something using nuclear technology is fairly easy; the problem is what to
do with the radiation produced from the reaction. The vehicle is powered by the extremely slow
decay of an element such as thorium or uranium, which produces heat and causes steam. This steam
is used to spin a turbine engine and create electricity to power

Renewable Sources of Energy: Green Power
Debate Assignment
Introduction
Green power or green energy is the electricity which is produced from renewable sources and such
renewable sources must be non–polluting. Earth has a self–cleansing mechanism capability which
cleans or recover the environment naturally upto a limit, so pollution within that limit can be termed
green. "The electricity produced from solar, wind, biogas, geothermal and low–impact small
hydroelectric sources are referred to as green power or green energy as defined by U.S. EPA." Many
Consumers purchase green power to avoid harmful environmental impacts and also to benefit the
environment by greenhouse gas reduction. [1]
Nuclear Power:
The first nuclear power station was opened on large scale in England in the year 1956. Uranium and
its isotopes were used to generate nuclear power. In many parts of the world, uranium was extracted
to generate Nuclear Power and which supplies about 11% energy needs of the world currently. A
large amount of energy was produced from very little quantity of fuel and also no pollution was
generated like fossil fuels. [2]
There was a chain reaction inside a nuclear reactor to produce heat otherwise the working of nuclear
power stations and fossil fuel–burning stations were same. Nuclear power worked on the process of
nuclear fission in which collision of neutrons produce energy in form of heat. As a fuel Uranium
rods were used in a nuclear reactor. As heat was released from the nuclear power station, carbon
dioxide or

1. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's safety records from the past four years, a myriad of safety
violations were found in nuclear power plants that could have lead to disaster. If the regulatory
commission discovered so many violations, how could nuclear power plants still be labeled as safe?
a. Among the violations that US power plants incurred were missing nuclear material, back up
power generators that did not work properly, corroded cooling pipes and even marijuana use inside a
nuclear power plant and the commission has done nothing to correct these problems (Flarend 152).
B. Supporters of nuclear power always report that nuclear power plants have safety measures in

Nuclear Power Sources For Space Exploration
Nuclear powered unmanned space vehicles (USVs) represent the future of deep space exploration.
Deep space missions require a power source that can travel further, go faster, and last longer than
traditional chemical rockets or solar powered propulsion systems; nuclear powered platforms
provide an ideal alternative. The United States is currently working cooperatively with other
countries to research and develop nuclear power sources for space travel. Examples of unmanned
deep space missions include space exploration, payload delivery, and asteroid interception. The

Chemical rockets alone are not practical for deep space missions and alternative solutions need to be
examined (Malagari & Sullivan, 2015). Autonomous unmanned spacecraft will be able to
successfully fulfill the long term vision of interplanetary travel; performing research and resupply
but the right energy and propulsion system once in orbit must be utilized. The one technology that
currently meets the criteria to power unmanned spacecraft while in orbit are nuclear powered
propulsion systems. When discussing spacecraft power and propulsion systems it must be
understood that there are two parts that must be considered; the first is the rocket booster which
launches the spacecraft into orbit and the second is the power system that moves the payload to its
final destination (Chiravalle, 2008). As of now, no platform has been launched into space by nuclear
power but it is feasible. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has considered
using nuclear assisted boosters along with chemical rockets to launch spacecraft which would
reduce mass and reduce cost (Sample, 2001). Once the platform is in orbit, nuclear power has
proved to be successful in unmanned rocket missions (Malagari & Sullivan, 2015). One of the most

Nuclear Power : A Source Of Energy
Another source of energy that is available is wind power. Wind power is able to turn a mill that
generates electricity. Wind power is a source of energy that is very reliable, steady, and consistent
from year to year. The growth of the wind power sources can lead to more jobs that will help
America 's and the world 's economy grow (Williams,"What Are the Different").
What is the cleanest and safest type of alternative energy? To some people 's surprise it is actually
nuclear power. Nuclear power is the safest, cleanest, and cheapest alternative to carbon heavy fossil
fuels ("Switkowski"). Nuclear fission is when atoms of molecules get split and then releases an
enormous amount of energy. Then that energy from the split atoms is used to heat water which is
then used to turn large electrical generating turbines (DeGunther). Nuclear power is an inexpensive
source and the cost of uranium is low. Also, the known reserves of uranium are much greater than
fossil fuel sources(DeGunther).Nuclear power can generate 75 times the electricity per ton of
uranium (Marketwired). A nuclear power plant can recover 95% wasted uranium and plutonium.
The smoke that comes out of the smoke stacks of nuclear powers plants is just harmless steam
("What"). Energy released by nuclear fission is about ten millions times greater than the amount
released by fossil fuels ("Pros and Cons of Nuclear"). Nuclear energy produces no carbon emissions

Consequently, organizational choice of replacing these people will be limited. Since any person who

based on the possession by an individual of desirable resources or personal traits. It develops out of
admiration of another and a desire to be like that person. One of the ways in which individuals
acquire Referent Power is through Charisma. Referent power is based on identification.
Identification is the process of learning wherein a person copies the behavior of other person whom
he takes as an ideal. The target of the influence feels attracted towards the person having power
because of his personality characteristics and tries to behave accordingly. Then this becomes the
basis of power exercise. Such identification process may take place without organizational context

The coal–fired plants that dominate U.S. energy production also produce more emissions than any
other energy source. Emissions are measured in pounds of emissions per megawatt hour of energy
produced. Coal generates 2,249 pounds of carbon dioxide, 13 pounds of sulfur dioxide and 6 pounds
of nitrogen oxides for every megawatt hour of energy generated. Natural gas –– the second most
common source of energy in the U.S. –– fares better with respect to emissions, producing 1,135
pounds of carbon dioxide, 0.1 pounds of sulfur dioxide and 1.7 pounds of nitrogen oxides per

Contrary to popular belief, Nuclear power plants do not emit high levels of radiation that could

Although Nuclear power plants do emit radiation, the amount is so slight that it is not even relevant.

Such a possibility that can cause this to happen includes a nuclear accident like Fukushima accident
in 2011 or unintended leakage where human population becomes overexposed to radiation. As a
result, mutations can occur to victims and may permanently damage the gene structure which could
result future generation to have abnormalities (Effects of Nuclear Radiation, 2011).
1.2.2 Waste from fission is radioactive
Radioactive wastes from nuclear plants are a major concern for those who are against nuclear
energy as the waste can last for over a thousand years until the radiation is gone (Australian
Government Parliamentary Departments, 2010). Nuclear waste mainly includes water pollutant
from the cooling system of nuclear plants. Water is essential for nuclear reactors to cool down so
that it may not overheat. However, water that is no longer needed for the nuclear reactor, which is
highly contaminated, need to be removed. Usually, nuclear plants pump this radioactive water into
nearby rivers or into the seas. As this water is radioactive, it damages the ecosystem, hence causing
harm to the environment. It can cause fish or marine live to die due to the harmful effects of
radiation (Kivi, n.d.)
6. Conclusion
As explored in this report, nuclear energy brings both advantages and disadvantages when it comes
to producing energy. On one hand, it is an alternative source of

The Five Characteristics Of The Five Sources Of Power
A leader has many important characteristics. One of these important characteristics is power.
Without power, leaders would not be able to influence their followers to achieve their goals
ethically. There are five main sources of power for leaders. The influence that leaders have using
these sources could be either negative or positive.
My Research to Answer the Question:
In 1959 John French and Bertram Raven stated significant theories regarding the source of power in
their article "The Bases of Power" and suggested that there are five sources of power. These sources
are placed into Organizational Powers and Personal Powers. Organizational Power contains
Legitimate, Coercive, and Reward power while Personal Power contains Expert and Referent power
or Connections power (Merchant., n.d.). Raven then added another power source called
Informational power six years later (Prescott, 2015). Other sources of power that are not part of the
theory that French and Raven stated are Moral power and Political power.

I agree with this statement due to the fact that employees who are working without job security, and
are working out of fear rather out of love will not work effectively, nor will they be loyal to their
employers and would quit when they get the first chance to or find another job. The employee
would oblige to the task in fear of facing the consequences of not doing it (Prescott, 2015). In order
for this to happen, the followers must believe that the leader has the ability to what he or she is
threatening to do (Leadership Power, n.d.). Thus, this power gives the leader control over behaviors
and causes the employees to stick to the rules and guidelines of the organization but it could also
cause the followers to be unhappy (Prescott, 2015). An example could be that of a mother who
threatens her child to go into a time–out if he or she fails to behave in

opinion, the three most important power is control over content, control over context, and control
over competence of nursing practice. Why? Control over content of nursing practice, Autonomy
represent one kind of power a nurse need and is defined as " The freedom to act on what one
knows"(Kramer and Schmalenberg. 1993, pg.62). When a nurse is able to act accordingly to their
knowledge and judgement as a nurse, then they have gained control over content in the work
environment. Knowledge is power and it gives your followers confidence in you to lead them as in
referent power which is "the ability of a leader to influence a follower because of the follower's
loyalty, respect, friendship, admiration, affection, or a desire to gain approval.Referent power is
gained by a leader who has strong interpersonal relationship skills"()

If this is true, the way in which states see the use of power in the form of information or attacks on a
state's informational structure such as a cyber–attack is crucial to the thinking and reaction of a
state. Moreover, the frequency by which states experience more cyber–attacks than another will
influence the thinking of the state. If a state sees a threat, like cyber–attacks, it is going to act
accordingly. Different frequencies of cyber–attacks for different states will provoke different
reactions to this threat within the international system. Unlike traditional, physical attacks against a
state which are tangible, cyber–attacks are a new medium of state warfare. Valeriano and Manses
explain that countries are considering cyber–attacks as acts of war. Determining why a state
experiences more cyber–attacks than another state is important because they can theoretically have
the same repercussions as conventional warfare but not necessarily be considered legally as an act
of war.
Secondly, the way in which states perceive and interpret cyber–attacks also effect the formation of
norms and international regimes they subscribe to when addressing the frequency of cyber–attacks.

situations" . So, states who experience more cyber–attacks and the factors which contribute to the
frequency, will act similarly when addressing a

Power And Family: Sources Of Conflict In Family
Sources of Conflict in Family:
How can we analyze marriages and families in terms of conflict and power? Marriage and family
relationships are base on love and affection, aren't they? Conflict theorist would agree that love and
affection are important elements in marriages and families. But they believe that conflict and power
are also fundamental. Family relationships = love & affection + conflict and power
Marriages and families are composed of individuals with different personalities, ideas, values,
tastes, and goals. Each person is not always in harmony with every other person in the family.

This theory seems to see whatever is there in the society, every social arrangement, every social
grouping and stratification, is wrong. There is nothing good in the society. Even the loving couples
and the caring parents are not good. The intimacy among family members is not a positive
phenomena but a tool in the members hand to dominate other members.
First, conflict theory derives from politics, in which self–interest, egotism, and competitionare
dominant elements. People's behavior is also characterized by self–sacrifice andcooperation. Love is
an important quality in relationships. Conflict theorists don't often talk about the power of love or
bonding; yet the presence of love and bonding may distinguish the family from all other groups in
society. We often make sacrifice for the sake of hose we love. We will defer our own wishes to
another's desires; we may even sacrifice our lives for a love done. Don't we? Second, conflict
theorists assume that differences lead to conflict. Differences can also be accepted, tolerated or
appreciated. Differences do not necessarily imply conflict. Just think that who cooperate with each
other? Whether without differences would there be cooperation? If there won't be any difference
with whom would you cooperate, both would become the same. Third, conflict in families is not
easily measured or evaluated. Families live much of their lives privately,

Nuclear Power Is The Best Energy Source For The Future
Nuclear power has been one of the largest contributors of energy for the past fifty years. With the
end of World War II, research into nuclear energies shifted away from war applications to simply
using it to power the world. Nuclear power was regarded as the never ending energy source that
would bring an end to energy problems and power the whole world. For many years it seemed to
work with no problems; however, that was a short lived reality. As problems with nuclear energy
came to light, many believed it was a better investment for the future to research and develop new
energy sources or just continue using fossil fuels. Many believe the risks and downsides of nuclear
power outweigh the benefits. However, there are still many advocates of nuclear power that believe
it is the best energy source for the world for reasons such as its large production of energy, their
belief that it is not a major harm to the environment, and their belief that it is better than the other
energy alternatives. However, in spite of these beliefs and facts, research into nuclear power
opposes the belief that nuclear power should be the main contributor of power because they are
expensive to build and can result in a catastrophic situations.
The Cost Nuclear Power

Nuclear Power: The Most Reliable Source Of Nuclear Energy
Nuclear power plants are, "a facility that converts atomic energy into usable power" (OECD

threats. Nuclear energy is controversial because many serious accidents can happen through the use
of nuclear power plants but life is much more efficient with the use of nuclear power plants. . I
believe that nuclear power should be used. It is the most reliable source of energy. It does not cause
pollution, which will m make our world much cleaner. Lastly, because it is much more efficient than
the use of fossil fuels.
Nuclear power plants should be used because it is the most reliable source of energy. When a
nuclear power plant is in the mode of producing energy, it can run for 18–24 months straight

affected by and does not depend on the climate. Nuclear power is extremely persistent: "The best
part is that this energy has a persistent supply. It is broadly accessible, there is a lot in storage, and it

Nuclear Energy As A Power Source
The choice of whether or not to use nuclear energy as a power source is admittedly a controversial
one. When people think about nuclear energy it can often be from a negative point of view. People
are concerned about nuclear energy, perhaps even rightfully so, because of the potential for deadly
accidents to occur, the generation of toxic radioactive waste, and release of radiation into the
environment if such waste is improperly stored. However, many consider these concerns to be
overly exaggerated, particular given the advancements in nuclear reactor technology since its earlier
days. The fact is nuclear power is a cheaper source of fuel than using coal or oil, let alone compared
to other traditional alternative forms of energy. Also in comparison to current fossil fuel based
power generation, it is significantly safer and cleaner. We should use nuclear power instead of other
sources of energy because it can produce high levels of electricity at relatively low cost, it would
significantly reduce the existing damage to our environment and atmosphere caused by more
common forms of fuel, and it is relatively safe.
One of the reasons we should use more nuclear power is that it produces high amounts of electricity
at a relatively low cost. Most of the power generation in the United States is produced by turbine
generators, where fluid or gas is used to turn a shaft, via turbine blades, to convert mechanical
energy into electrical energy. Various methods and fuels

Identifying And Applying Sources Of Power

  • 1. Identifying and Applying Sources of Power "I am more afraid of an army of 100 sheep led by a lion than an army of 100 lions led by a sheep" (Talleyrand). The significance of leadership can be summed up so soundly in such a simple quote. Leadership can be defined in countless ways, but one way to identify a leader is as a person who can positively or negatively affect the thoughts and behaviors of others. A leader is someone who forms the direction for others to readily follow. One person may be identified as a leader or several may share it. An individual may be appointed as leader or they may be elected. Leaders can influence others to perform beyond the expectations. It is not just a wide spread concept, but a way of life and an aspect of continuous evolution. Trying to narrow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has been determined that the basis of legitimacy must first come from the acceptance of the individual and acknowledgment of the asserted power. Three values have a significant part in this process. The first one involves the cultural values that can often influence an individual. The importance of age and elders is on example. Another factor is the acceptance of the social structure or the hierarchy of authority. The final source of legitimate power is the designation by a legitimizing agent (Asherman & Asherman, 2001). Some may accept someone else's role of leadership and power based on who gave them that position. There are many varied example one could come up with for legitimate power. It can be seen in various settings, two of which came to mind. In the military, structure is based heavily on rank and position. It is something that is earned and not just given. One must work hard to move up in rank and that is a well–known, and a well– accepted aspect. The difference between enlisted service members and commissioned officers is another example. Although, between officers and enlisted members there is often variations of age, length of time in service, and knowledge, when the military bestows an officer position the power of the role is recognized and accepted by all. Another example was in my first field placement at a nursing home. Even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Pros and Cons of Nuclear Power as an Energy Source Essay The Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Nuclear Power Plants as an Energy Source Nuclear power is the use of continuous nuclear reactions to do practical work. It is produced by nuclear fission reactions which occur when adequate quantities of Uranium–235 are restricted to a small area. Nuclear fission is the process of nuclei being split. In this case a heavier nucleus splits up into two or more lighter nuclei, then this moves on by a chain reaction when the emitted neutrons go on to split the other nuclei. Heat is produced by the reaction, which is then converted to Kinetic energy by a steam turbine and finally by a generator to produce electricity. There are several advantages with using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Careless disposal of nuclear waste leads to pollution of rivers, lakes, land and ocean. A further disadvantage is that the nuclear power stations can be dangerous to some parts of the world. Despite reassurances that nuclear power plants are safe, serious accidents have happened. A good example of this is the accident that occurred in Chernobyl, 1986. The accident was a result of a defective reactor design that was operated by improperly trained employees, without suitable regard of safety. This caused the immediate death of 40 people and 130 getting radiation sicknesses. A different strong reason for the disadvantage of nuclear power plants is that the power station is extremely expensive to build. Once the power station is built, the costs for electricity throughout the station are tremendously high. The topic of using nuclear power plants is controversial. As written before, there are several disadvantages and as well advantages that contribute to the building of nuclear power plants. So the question asked is if people should use nuclear power to produce energy or not. It is obvious that nuclear energy has several advantages, for example it is cheap and makes a large amount of energy with a small amount of fuel. Energy can be provided ... • 3. Nuclear Power, A Source Of Environmentally Clean Energy With cartoons of many eyed fish; neon green tubes of uranium; and ominous images of dark, billowing smoke, nuclear energy is a source of great misconception and mythology. TV shows such as The Simpsons, and notable disasters such as Fukushima and Chernobyl have left many citizens around the world in fear of nuclear anything. However, these depictions and accidents are not a typical representation of what nuclear energy can do for the world. Climate change feels looming and environmental concerns are growing in the general public and demand for clean energy source is justly rising. Nuclear power is a safe source of environmentally clean energy that is a worthwhile investment for the American government and its people. The United States has seen two distinct eras of nuclear power: The first between 1960 and 1980 and the second with the Nuclear Renaissance starting around 2001. In the 1960's nuclear energy was a new and exciting source of power. Though public opinion was generally positive, debate and concern for safety existed. In 2001, nuclear power began to rise in the United States again with climate change concerns surfaces (world–nuclear.org). The industry expanded further 4 years later with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 under George W. Bush. This policy granted 4 billion dollars in loans and tax credits. Further acts increased the subsidies for clean energy loans (the majority of which being for nuclear energy sources) to 7 billion (Edmund, Wald). In 2012, 31 license ... • 4. Nuclear Power : A Mainstream Source Of Electricity Nuclear power has been slow to become a mainstream source of electricity in the world. Despite the fact that Nuclear power is arguably the most capable source of continuous, clean energy; the industry has been held back by safety and financial concerns. Current nuclear power plants, so– called Generation II reactors, are currently the largest source of carbon free electricity in the United States according to the Department of Energy (DoE). Only second to safety concerns, financing is vitally important to nuclear power's success. To this end, the NuScale SMR (Small Modular Reactor) has numerous economic and industrial benefits over contemporary, large–scale, nuclear power plants. Recent estimates for the cost of building a brand new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means that a reactor would supply a facility with a large amount of power, instead of that electricity coming from the grid. A few examples would be desalination of water, nitrogen fixation, and oil refining[1]. As shown before, building a Gen II reactor is a huge undertaking of both time and money. Therefore, the companies that finance them are focused on maximizing the power output upon completion. There was no economical reason to customize the energy output for a specific need, so nuclear energy was resigned to supply the grid exclusively. The problem with producing energy to the grid is that a lot of it is lost in transportation and distribution. The Energy Information Association (EIA) estimates that about six percent of all energy production to the grid in the US is wasted in this way[6]. Direct power does not factor into this calculation, so increasing its use will not decrease that percentage. What it will do is decrease the amount of energy the grid needs to supply by a significant amount, thus reducing the amount of waste. Industry accounts for about twenty percent of energy used in the US, none of which is supplied by Nuclear power[9]. Other alternative energy sources, like wind and solar, fail to adequately address the needs of factories that need continuous and large amounts of electricity. The EIA has invested a lot of money in SMR ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Nuclear Fusion a Feasible Source of Power Essay example Is Nuclear Fusion a Feasible Source of Power? Abstract: Nuclear fusion may be an effective solution to the energy problem in today?s world. Fusion is environmentally friendly and has the potential to generate massive amounts of power. It is evident that the Sun?s power is fueled by nuclear fusion. Recent advancements such as ITER and NIF may bring us closer to being able to use fusion. We find that nuclear fusion is a long–term solution to a continuing problem. Introduction: Since the Industrial Age, energy from fossil fuels has become widespread. In recent times, the depletion of fossil fuels is forcing humanity to search for other alternatives, such as nuclear fusion. Fusion has been an attractive method of energy for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientists aim to gain knowledge and improve the power output, the time duration, and the energy cost. Nuclear fusion is a process that occurs when two hydrogen isotopes (tritium and deuterium) fuse together. This reaction produces a neutron and also a large amount of energy. However, a massive amount of heat is necessary for the reaction to initiate because the nuclei (which have very strong opposing charges) must fuse together. The temperature necessary for this to occur is over one hundred million degrees Kelvin. When the reaction occurs, the energy is so great that it is very difficult to contain. So far the known methods of containment are magnetic confinement and inertial confinement. The magnetic confinement uses a very powerful magnetic field, and the inertial confinement uses the inertia of the reaction. (Figure 1, wikipedia, ?nuclear fusion?) We will investigate published literature that either supports or reflects if fusion is feasible. We believe fusion would be a feasible source of power if it could produce reasonably more energy that is put in. Results and Discussion There are several methods to create nuclear fusion for power. The most successful is the star, which uses gravity and pressure to fuse hydrogen and create helium. Unfortunately we cannot harness a sun and harvest it on earth for raw fusion energy. However, we can create small reactions similar to that of the sun in the lab and turn the radiant energy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Energy Source Of Nuclear Power Nuclear Power It is no question that the US is incredibly reliant on energy. In 2014 alone, the US used 98.324 quadrillion BTUs of energy. According to the US Energy Information Administration, Roughly 82% of that was fossil fuels. Renewable resources accounted for 10%, including solar, wind, hydroelectric, and more, and the remaining 8% was nuclear power. This energy powered our televisions and drove our cars. Unfortunately, our reliance on fossil fuels brings with it serious side effects, including global warming. When fossil fuel is burned, greenhouse gases are released. These gases harm the environment and contribute to global warming. Global warming can have serious side effects, including melting of the polar ice caps, and acidification of oceans. Because of these issues, a new industry took shape; alternative energy. These energy sources are alternatives to fossil fuels, and do not cause pollution. One powerful alternative energy source is nuclear power. Nuclear power should be used to replace fossil fuels, as it does not pollute and is the most concentrated form of energy. Fossil fuels, a natural fuel formed from the remains of living organisms, has its benefits. It is easily available, and can produce large amounts of energy. It is abundantly available and is currently necessary to power millions of cars worldwide. It is easy to set up plants, and can be harvested at a very low cost. Unfortunately, these benefits come at a high price. Burning fossil fuels creates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Nuclear Power : An Alternative Energy Source Nuclear power is an alternative energy source with the visage of being clean and reliable, but also dangerous. Nuclear power as an energy source emerged after 1956, and is formed in a process called nuclear fission, in which a nucleus of an atom is split resulting in a large output of usable energy (World Nuclear Association). The decision to pursue the path of nuclear energy and to what extent is a highly debated topic in which experts are forced to weigh the risks and the rewards. The outcome of the nuclear energy debate can result either in a seemingly limitless supply of clean energy, or the decimation of hundreds of thousands of innocent human and animal lives due to nuclear meltdowns. In a time of shifting global pressures, a constant energy supply is vital to the well–being of a nation, and can alleviate many of the pressures faced by a nation and its occupants. However, nuclear power provides the anchor that prevents a nation from becoming trapped in the malicious vortex of global energy struggles. Even so, critics of nuclear power discover problems with this form of energy, and their concerns are enough to entice global outcries against nuclear power. It is critical for the dangers of nuclear power to be taken seriously, but careful planning and rational thinking supersede many of the irrational views toward this form of energy. There is no "one solution" to the nuclear energy problem, but there are viable options for each scenario that can entail countless ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Essay about Wind Power as an Alternative Energy Source Wind Power as an Alternate Energy Source Graphics not Included ABSTRACT The United States' main source of energy is currently fossil fuels. However, we know that fossil fuel supply continues to deplete and sooner or later, the United States will need to resort to a new source of energy. This report hopes to explore the advantages and disadvantages of wind power using model regions. These regions have experience in using wind power, which may help us determine whether or not it is a suitable source of energy when fossil fuels are completely drained. From examining Denmark and other places benefiting from this clean and unlimited source of wind power, we believe that the United States possesses enough wind, money, and other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... is only 16.1 km/hr Because of this, companies consider building windmills offshore where there are less obstacles and constant wind. The power of the windmill does not only depend on the speed of the wind, but also the swept area, and the density of the air. Windmills are as equally effective as coal plants, converting 30–40% of the wind?s kinetic energy into electricity (Wind Energy––Energy from Moving Air, 2005). Scientists like German physicist Albert Betz have said that a windmill may convert 59% of the energy from wind (Wikipedia, 2005). According to some designers for windmills, even though windmills do lose some wind energy, they still produce constant energy. Capacity, however, is somewhat lower; sitting at about 30–35% (Wind Energy––Energy from Moving Air, 2005). The declining supply of fossil fuels and the increasing pollution resulting from its use threatens our nation with a crisis. While fossil fuels can still supply the world its energy for now, the depletion of fossil fuels will force us to find an alternative source of energy. Scientists believe this will happen by 2050 (Food, Land, Population, and the US Economy). The purpose of the lab report is to examine wind power by weighing its pros and cons to determine whether or not this can be a good source of energy when we do run out of fuel. Since developing an experiment is impossible for our studies, we will be looking at specific places in the United States or other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These types of individuals in a private therapy situation are using the other type of animal therapy which is officially called Animal Assisted Therapy or AAT. Animal Assisted therapy is tailored to one specific person in a meeting with a therapy professional with the aid and assistance of an animal. The animal, usually being a dog, is used to treat a client on a personal level and is used as a tool in a session of therapy. An example of AAT is having a dog for a client to stroke in a therapy session to relax and have the person be more open and trusting of the therapist they are working with. The aid of animals in therapy can be used to help treat emotion issues as well as physical issues in the types of therapy the animal is used with. Effects of Nuclear Power Nuclear power is on the rise as it is a cleaner alternative to other energies; nations are trying to increase the production of energy from nuclear power in order to go 'Green' and to save the environment and the ozone layer from greenhouse gases. Other energy resources utilize fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum and create large amounts of greenhouse gases. However, nuclear Energy is extremely dangerous as plants can suffer from catastrophic meltdowns and even explosions. Nuclear energy also produces dangerous radioactive waste which has to be stored on the nuclear plant site. The use of Nuclear power leaves behind an enormous amount of waste to be dealt with by a later generation. Without an increase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only do plants endanger the surrounding community from meltdowns and nuclear explosions, but they could also serve as possible targets for terrorists. The radius of an explosion from a nuclear plant could send fallout to surrounding cities deeming them inhabitable. The Chernobyl incident resulted in seventy–seven thousand square miles being contaminated with radioactive fallout and fifty deaths of workers from radiation poisoning. (Horgan) To this day, after almost twenty five years, the area of Chernobyl in the Ukraine remains a ghost town. These dangers suggest that maybe nuclear power is not the best route to take when looking for alternate forms of energy. The average American gets over six hundred Millirems per year from the atmosphere, cosmic rays, and even consumer products. (Horgan) "Federal Regulations permit nuclear workers to receive up to five thousand Millirems a year... there is no clear cut evidence of adverse health effects from radiation at levels below one hundred thousand Millirems a year." (Horgan) Horgan even goes on to state "In short, I'm staying on the nuclear bandwagon, but I'm not encouraging anyone to join me." (p.n.) • 11. Nuclear Power Is The Best Source Of Power Essay Mickey Eovine O'Sullivan 1st January 22, 2016 Nuclear Power Just about every part of today's society involves energy of some sorts. But as our society progresses, the need for better, more efficient power sources must be addressed. Out of all of the choices, the most popular to date is nuclear power. Nuclear power is a growing industry that is getting mixed reviews from various sources. But which side is right? Is nuclear power the future? Or is it just another problem the world will have to deal with? The answer is simple. Nuclear Energy is the future and will power almost the entire world one day. Nuclear power is the best source of power because it produces lots of power, it produces clean energy, it is cheap, and it is sustainable. Before that though, a bit of history about nuclear energy. In 1789, Uranium was discovered by a German chemist named Martin Klaproth. Later on in 1902 Ernest Rutherford, discovered how radioactivity as a spontaneous event emits an alpha or beta particle from the nucleus that creates a different element. In 1919 he wanted a better understanding of atoms, so he fired alpha particles from a radium source into nitrogen and found that nuclear rearrangement was occurring, with formation of oxygen. Niels Bohr also did work to help better understand the work of atoms in the 1940s (Perera). Nuclear fission (the process that generates nuclear power) was discovered by Lisa Meitner and Otto Frisch. • 12. Theories Of Leadership : The Five Sources Of Power In... Theories of motivation The evaluation of power and influence has showed that they are closely related to the leadership style that Carlos Slim lead. The five sources of power have categorized in two different category, one is positional or organizational power consisting of legitimate, rewards and coercive; and the remaining is personal power including expert and referent power (Combe, 2014). The personal power is studied as more regarded in employee satisfaction, commitment, loyalty as well as job performance (Lunenburg, 2012). Sources of Power Power is a source of ability to control other's actions (Combe, 2014). French and Raven had originally developed the most influential theories in purpose of determining the sources of power that leaders use to influence others. The five sources of power consist of coercive, reward and legitimate where categorized in positional or organizational power; expert and referent are the sources of power which categorized in personal power (French & Raven, 2004). Generally saying, the personal power is more regarded to the job satisfaction of the employees, the commitment of the organization, and job performance (Lunenburg, 2012). In contrast, the coercive power is a power depending on fear which brings negatively consequences (Combe, 2014). Even though, these sources of power have been defined their own definition, these powers should not be completely separate from each other. Indeed, one of the primary reasons why we are even having this competition is a result of the 8% plus annual GDP growth over the last 8 years. This growth has been driven by strong domestic demand, and with that electricity consumption per capita has doubled from 355KWh in 2000 to 720kWh by 2009. This is a huge increase, but in absolute terms is puny when compared to other countries globally, being only 20% and 3% of the figures for China and America respectively. But even taking this into account, it is not conceivable that solar cells, even when pushed to the limit, will replace conventional sources of energy in even the medium term. Compare the ambitious 20,000 MW goal for 2020 with the overall target of 62,500 MW for 2012 and the scales are clear. While solar energy could prove to be significant locally to states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, on a national level, solar energy cannot be our main source of energy for the next 20 years or so. This basically leaves two options for policy makers in India; continue with our traditional reliance on thermal power (with a new emphasis on gas based plants) or consider taking a bolder move and placing more emphasis on nuclear power, despite the much larger initial barriers. In my view, there are strong reasons for opting for the latter, which I will detail in the paragraphs below. India abounds with coal. Indeed, this is the only fossil fuel we have a huge supply of. Beneath the ground in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Orissa lies about 10% of the known reserves, making India the 3rd largest coal producer in the world. • 14. Wind Power Generation : Renewable Energy Source Wind Power Generation In the 21st Century, fossil fuels are becoming increasingly important, with the demand for these resources increasing, despite the knowledge that they are finite. Globally, the annual consumption of fossil fuels is eleven billion tonnes, with crude oil reserves waning at a rate of four billion tonnes per year. If these figures experience little change in coming years, oil reserves are estimated to completely deplete by 2052 (Ecotricity.co.uk, 2014). Other options are available to replace non– renewable energy sources, one of these options being wind turbines, as they are the obvious option to be used as energy sources as wind is without charge. Wind power requires harnessing energy from the wind, and using it to generate electricity. According to Blue–energyco.com (2014), wind power generation is the fastest growing renewable energy source universally, as evidenced by the growth rate which stands at 25% in over a decade with the total capacity currently exceeding 60 000 MW (Fox, B. (2007) Wind power integration, page 1). Explaining how wind turbines works is really simple, what happens is Wind causes the blades of the turbines to rotate Blade rotation cause the low speed shaft to rotate Low speed shaft is connected to a gear box which turns causing some other gears inside the turbine to rotate These gears inside the turbine in turn, turn the generator Rotational energy is actually needed to rotate the generator The rotational energy is ... Nuclear Power has many benefits compared to f of However, nuclear power also remains one of the most controversial sources of energy. The debates on it are mainly based along the lines of environmental, safety and security. History Since 1939 when Hahn and Strassman found that fission released energy and neutrons to help uranium nuclei to be a self–sustaining chain reaction that would lead to an enormous release of energy (WNA), harassing nuclear fission become an important part in creating a nuclear bomb. The government had control over all nuclear research and began the Manhattan Project. "In June 1942 the US Army took over process development, engineering design, procurement of materials and site selection for pilot plants for four methods of making fissionable material" (WNA). Until after World War II nuclear reactors were harnessing nuclear power for other reasons than for electricity. After World War II the idea of using nuclear energy for good, rather than for war was a reason not to keep all nuclear research controlled by military organizations. • 16. Nuclear Power : A New Energy Source Essay The steam spun the wheel of the turbine with a Whoosh. The ecstasy of finding a new energy source is ineffable, and when found, the discovery always immediately prompts a race to use this newfound source. In accordance with this behavior, many sought to integrate nuclear power into society upon its development. The difference being nuclear energy is far more complicated and powerful than anything the field of energy has dealt with thus far. There are two types of nuclear reactions, fission and fusion; working reactors only using fission currently. In fission a neutron reacts with Uranium– 235 to produce energy, two fragment nuclei, and multiple neutrons to continue the reaction. Meanwhile, in fusion two hydrogen isotopes react to produce energy, protons, neutrons, and Helium. As a consequence of these processes ' complex and formidable natures, there is a hesitance to their utilization as it is difficult to discuss the complexities of the procedures with the public without some misinterpretation. Despite the benefits found in nuclear power, it still undergoes harsh debate as governments oppose giving money to such an unexplored area of science. Yet, an increase in funding for U.S. nuclear programs would prompt advancements that replace less effective energy sources, creating opportunities for specialization in the field. The Sources Of Personal And Positional Power This paper discusses the sources of personal and positional power and identifies the most influential power to have in a professional working environment. Leadership is the utilization of power and leaders must establish appropriate organizational power bases to effectively exercise power to influence people they lead. Great leaders have a vision to achieve large–scale ideas and they possess the power to transform visions into reality. When a leader uses their power in an ethical and responsible way, the goals of the organization will be achieved and leadership will be able to develop effective organizational and interpersonal relationships. Power can be defined as the ability to influence others towards a common goal. Power has always been interconnected with the perception of leadership, as a person can employ their power while not being a leader, but cannot be a leader without power. A leader can use their power to accomplish goals and inspire those they lead to produce superior performance. Leaders make important decisions and safeguard the integrity of the organization. There can be several types of personal and positional power that an effective leader can develop to achieve and retain the position of influence. Contrary to popular belief, Nuclear power plants do not emit high levels of radiation that could potentially cause cancer Although Nuclear power plants do emit radiation, the amount is so slight that it is not even relevant. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, "The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reports that people living close to a nuclear power plant receive, at most, an additional one millirem of radiation exposure a year. To put this in perspective, one millirem is one thousandth of the radiation exposure from a single whole–body CAT scan. The average American is exposed to 620 millirem of radiation every year. Three hundred millirem comes from natural sources, such as cosmic rays, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Nuclear Energy as a Power Source Nuclear energy as a Power Source Name: Syahmi Shamsul Class: English 1–2 Submission Date: 28 February 2013 Table of Contents 1. Introduction This report aims to explore the views of those who support nuclear energy as a source of electricity and those who oppose it. It will also analyze the issue of using nuclear energy as a power source, why this issue is so significant as well as the people involved in this issue. 2. The issue Due to the rising cost and at the same time, the declining availability of fossil fuel, many countries seek cheap, alternative ways to produce electricity for their people. As nuclear energy is cheap because of the large amount of uranium reserve on Earth and that it is also able ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such a possibility that can cause this to happen includes a nuclear accident like Fukushima accident in 2011 or unintended leakage where human population becomes overexposed to radiation. As a result, mutations can occur to victims and may permanently damage the gene structure which could result future generation to have abnormalities (Effects of Nuclear Radiation, 2011). 1.2.2 Waste from fission is radioactive Radioactive wastes from nuclear plants are a major concern for those who are against nuclear energy as the waste can last for over a thousand years until the radiation is gone (Australian Government Parliamentary Departments, 2010). Nuclear waste mainly includes water pollutant from the cooling system of nuclear plants. Water is essential for nuclear reactors to cool down so that it may not overheat. However, water that is no longer needed for the nuclear reactor, which is highly contaminated, need to be removed. Usually, nuclear plants pump this radioactive water into nearby rivers or into the seas. As this water is radioactive, it damages the ecosystem, hence causing harm to the environment. It can cause fish or marine live to die due to the harmful effects of radiation (Kivi, n.d.) 6. Conclusion As explored in this report, nuclear energy brings both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to producing energy. On one hand, it is an alternative source of

  • 32. The Five Characteristics Of The Five Sources Of Power A leader has many important characteristics. One of these important characteristics is power. Without power, leaders would not be able to influence their followers to achieve their goals ethically. There are five main sources of power for leaders. The influence that leaders have using these sources could be either negative or positive. My Research to Answer the Question: In 1959 John French and Bertram Raven stated significant theories regarding the source of power in their article "The Bases of Power" and suggested that there are five sources of power. These sources are placed into Organizational Powers and Personal Powers. Organizational Power contains Legitimate, Coercive, and Reward power while Personal Power contains Expert and Referent power or Connections power (Merchant., n.d.). Raven then added another power source called Informational power six years later (Prescott, 2015). Other sources of power that are not part of the theory that French and Raven stated are Moral power and Political power. Legitimate power, also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I agree with this statement due to the fact that employees who are working without job security, and are working out of fear rather out of love will not work effectively, nor will they be loyal to their employers and would quit when they get the first chance to or find another job. The employee would oblige to the task in fear of facing the consequences of not doing it (Prescott, 2015). In order for this to happen, the followers must believe that the leader has the ability to what he or she is threatening to do (Leadership Power, n.d.). Thus, this power gives the leader control over behaviors and causes the employees to stick to the rules and guidelines of the organization but it could also cause the followers to be unhappy (Prescott, 2015). An example could be that of a mother who threatens her child to go into a time–out if he or she fails to behave in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By the analyses of the primary source one is able to examine firsthand information from all the possible areas of an event person or object. There are a couple of primary sources in "The Rise of Western Power: A Comparative History of Western Civilization by Jonathan Daly. In this case we are going to explain how these sources relate to the western civilization and their importance to the understanding of the European history and the world history in general. First and foremost, we take a look at the letter to Heliodors from St Jerome in (347–420 ad). • 34. The Most Important Power Sources In Nursing In your opinion, what are the three most important power sources for a nurse leader? Why? In my opinion, the three most important power is control over content, control over context, and control over competence of nursing practice. Why? Control over content of nursing practice, Autonomy represent one kind of power a nurse need and is defined as " The freedom to act on what one knows"(Kramer and Schmalenberg. 1993, pg.62). When a nurse is able to act accordingly to their knowledge and judgement as a nurse, then they have gained control over content in the work environment. Knowledge is power and it gives your followers confidence in you to lead them as in referent power which is "the ability of a leader to influence a follower because of the follower's loyalty, respect, friendship, admiration, affection, or a desire to gain approval.Referent power is gained by a leader who has strong interpersonal relationship skills"() Control over context of nursing practice is when the nurses are involved in running the hospital or healthcare industry. The magnet hospital would be a good example control over context, because they empower the work place structure, relationships and their relationship to improve nursing outcomes ... • 36. Information Is A Source Of Power In International Relations. Information is a source of power in international relations. Technology is the capability by which states store information. More so now than ever, countries heavily rely on information technology and data storage in order to facilitate the basic functioning of a state. However, when any state places enough importance on a resource of power, that resource becomes a target. An attack on informational structures of a state are cyber–attacks or "the use of computational technologies in cyberspace for malevolent and destructive purposes in order to impact, change, or modify diplomatic and military interactions between entities" Cyber–attacks are increasingly becoming daily security threats in both private and public sectors of a state. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If this is true, the way in which states see the use of power in the form of information or attacks on a state's informational structure such as a cyber–attack is crucial to the thinking and reaction of a state. Moreover, the frequency by which states experience more cyber–attacks than another will influence the thinking of the state. If a state sees a threat, like cyber–attacks, it is going to act accordingly. Different frequencies of cyber–attacks for different states will provoke different reactions to this threat within the international system. Unlike traditional, physical attacks against a state which are tangible, cyber–attacks are a new medium of state warfare. Valeriano and Manses explain that countries are considering cyber–attacks as acts of war. Determining why a state experiences more cyber–attacks than another state is important because they can theoretically have the same repercussions as conventional warfare but not necessarily be considered legally as an act of war. Secondly, the way in which states perceive and interpret cyber–attacks also effect the formation of norms and international regimes they subscribe to when addressing the frequency of cyber–attacks. Again, Jervis contends that "States with the same similar attributes behave the same way in situations" . So, states who experience more cyber–attacks and the factors which contribute to the frequency, will act similarly when addressing a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Marriage and family relationships are base on love and affection, aren't they? Conflict theorist would agree that love and affection are important elements in marriages and families. But they believe that conflict and power are also fundamental. Family relationships = love & affection + conflict and power Marriages and families are composed of individuals with different personalities, ideas, values, tastes, and goals. Even the loving couples and the caring parents are not good. The intimacy among family members is not a positive phenomena but a tool in the members hand to dominate other members. First, conflict theory derives from politics, in which self–interest, egotism, and competitionare dominant elements. People's behavior is also characterized by self–sacrifice andcooperation. Love is an important quality in relationships. Conflict theorists don't often talk about the power of love or bonding; yet the presence of love and bonding may distinguish the family from all other groups in society. We often make sacrifice for the sake of hose we love. We will defer our own wishes to another's desires; we may even sacrifice our lives for a love done. Don't we? Second, conflict theorists assume that differences lead to conflict. Differences can also be accepted, tolerated or appreciated. Differences do not necessarily imply conflict. Just think that who cooperate with each other? Whether without differences would there be cooperation? If there won't be any difference with whom would you cooperate, both would become the same. Third, conflict in families is not easily measured or evaluated. Families live much of their lives privately, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Nuclear Power Is The Best Energy Source For The Future Nuclear power has been one of the largest contributors of energy for the past fifty years. With the end of World War II, research into nuclear energies shifted away from war applications to simply using it to power the world. Nuclear power was regarded as the never ending energy source that would bring an end to energy problems and power the whole world. For many years it seemed to work with no problems; however, that was a short lived reality. As problems with nuclear energy came to light, many believed it was a better investment for the future to research and develop new energy sources or just continue using fossil fuels. Many believe the risks and downsides of nuclear power outweigh the benefits. However, there are still many advocates of nuclear power that believe it is the best energy source for the world for reasons such as its large production of energy, their belief that it is not a major harm to the environment, and their belief that it is better than the other energy alternatives. However, in spite of these beliefs and facts, research into nuclear power opposes the belief that nuclear power should be the main contributor of power because they are expensive to build and can result in a catastrophic situations. The Cost Nuclear Power Any positive attributes nuclear reactors and energy have can only be realized once the reactors have been built. This is one of the main problems with nuclear power. • 39. Nuclear Power: The Most Reliable Source Of Nuclear Energy Nuclear power plants are, "a facility that converts atomic energy into usable power" (OECD Glossary). Although nuclear power plants have many advantages, they have have very serious threats. Nuclear energy is controversial because many serious accidents can happen through the use of nuclear power plants but life is much more efficient with the use of nuclear power plants. . I believe that nuclear power should be used. It is the most reliable source of energy. It does not cause pollution, which will m make our world much cleaner. Lastly, because it is much more efficient than the use of fossil fuels. Nuclear power plants should be used because it is the most reliable source of energy. When a nuclear power plant is in the mode of producing energy, it can run for 18–24 months straight without stopping. Conversely, solar and wind depend on the weather forecast. Nuclear power is not affected by and does not depend on the climate. Nuclear power is extremely persistent: "The best part is that this energy has a persistent supply. It is broadly accessible, there is a lot in storage, and it is believed that the supply is going to last much, much longer than that of fossil fuels that are used in the same capacity" (Conserve–Energy–Future). • 40. Nuclear Energy As A Power Source The choice of whether or not to use nuclear energy as a power source is admittedly a controversial one. When people think about nuclear energy it can often be from a negative point of view. People are concerned about nuclear energy, perhaps even rightfully so, because of the potential for deadly accidents to occur, the generation of toxic radioactive waste, and release of radiation into the environment if such waste is improperly stored. However, many consider these concerns to be overly exaggerated, particular given the advancements in nuclear reactor technology since its earlier days. The fact is nuclear power is a cheaper source of fuel than using coal or oil, let alone compared to other traditional alternative forms of energy. Also in comparison to current fossil fuel based power generation, it is significantly safer and cleaner. We should use nuclear power instead of other sources of energy because it can produce high levels of electricity at relatively low cost, it would significantly reduce the existing damage to our environment and atmosphere caused by more common forms of fuel, and it is relatively safe. One of the reasons we should use more nuclear power is that it produces high amounts of electricity at a relatively low cost. Most of the power generation in the United States is produced by turbine generators, where fluid or gas is used to turn a shaft, via turbine blades, to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
