Nuclear Power Argumentative Essay
Nuclear power can be defined as "any method of doing work that makes use of nuclear fission or
nuclear fusion reactions" ("Nuclear Power", 2017). Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission to
provide heat, which causes water to become steam. It is the steam that spins turbines and provides
the energy. Then, the steam either rises up a cooling tower and is released into the air, or is cooled
by being deposited into a lake or ocean (Goodman, 2017). There are three nuclear power plants in
Michigan: Fermi 2, Palisades, and Cook Nuclear Plant ("Nuclear Power Plants", n.d.). Together, they

This just goes to show how efficient the fuel in nuclear plants is at producing energy. The final
reason why nuclear energy is so efficient is because nuclear power plants have a very high energy
output compared to other plants. Coal plants have "an average capacity of 547 megawatts" ("Coal
generates 44%", 2012). While this is decent, nuclear plants, on average, produce about double of
what coal plants generate. The average nuclear plant can produce over 1,000 megawatts of energy!
This makes it the most efficient way to produce electricity because of its high output of energy
("World Nuclear", 2017). But this high output is only possible because the plant can run around the
clock. And that is only possible due to the uranium fuel being so powerful and efficient. Not only
should we expand the use of nuclear power plants in Michigan because they are efficient, but they
also should be expanded for their economical benefits.
Increasing the use of nuclear energy in Michigan would be very helpful for the economy. First of
all, nuclear power is cost–effective. "Nuclear power plants are...relatively cheap to run. The
operating cost of these plants is lower than almost all fossil fuel competitors, with a very low risk of
operating cost inflation" ("World Nuclear", 2017). Inflation is very bad for the economy. If there

Across the United States 104 nuclear reactors generate around 20% of the nation's electricity.
While worldwide 436 nuclear reactors generate about 15% of the world's supply every year
(Carson). Some people feel as though we need to expand the fleet of nuclear reactors and increase
nuclear power production. Nuclear energy may be one of the best ways to combat global warming
and reduce CO2 emissions, however if the radiation and nuclear waste that it produces is better for
our environment than the CO2 is still uncertain. In the United States the nuclear power plants use

The spent fuel rods and the other products produced by the nuclear fuel process are highly
reactive. This waste must be stored in very safe and secure locations for tens of thousands of years,
which is periods "longer than the history of most governments the world has seen" as the former
Atomic Energy Commission put it (Carson). The uranium that is used in the reactors has a half life,
that is long it takes for half the nuclei in the radioactive material to decay, of 10,000 years, while
plutonium, another nuclear fuel, has a half life close to 25,000 (Carson). Some say that it is too
much of a burden to place on future generations to be able to properly monitor and maintain waste

Nuclear Energy Energy consumption has become a necessity and an important part of our daily
life in the past 10 years. It seems that the world is looking for an energy source that is cleaner,
cheaper and more efficient and since nuclear energy has emerged it has become the forerunner for

But after all the advantages of using nuclear energy outweigh its disadvantages as nuclear plants emit
less than one–hundredth of carbon dioxide gas compared to coal or gas–fired energy plants so there
is a very little effect on the environment. Humans living next to coal–fired power plants are exposed
to higher radiation doses than those living near nuclear plants, where the former is harmful to human
health and may be responsible for acid rain. On the other hand dependence on nuclear energy is now
increasing in most countries as nuclear reactors use uranium as a fuel which is found everywhere on
earth. It is inexpensive and easier to transport than other fuels which makes them less dependent on
oil and foreign fuel from other countries. No doubt that most people believe that the world is a
better place than it was 20 to 30 years ago. But actually, the world is becoming a very dangerous

unacceptable flaws, such as groundwater flows or earthquake vulnerability, that could release

and dangerous. And just because nuclear pollution is invisible doesn't mean it's clean. Renewable

One of the most pressing topics of debate in the recent years has been the different sources of energy
and their effects on the environment. People have started to realize the negative effects of
non–renewable energy, such as greenhouse gas emissions and other negative effects on the
environment, but neglect to take action and implement more ecofriendly energy sources. For the
past 300 years the world has been predominantly powered by coal and other non–renewable energy
sources, but now it is time to move past these energy sources and transition to more efficient, clean

America's Energy Woes
America relies heavily on foreign sources for the energy to run the country. The issue has received

About 70% of the reactors used are pressurized water reactors (PWR). The other 30% are boiling
water reactors (BWR). The main difference of the two is PWR do not boil the water as it heats. In
PWR, as the water used to cool the reactions heats it gets transferred into a secondary loop after
reaching 317o C and 2,235 psi. The water heated in the secondary loop creates steam, which is fed
to a steam powered turbine generator. This cycle continues as the steam cools and condenses back
into water. In BWR, the water simply just boils and turns to steam and is fed to the steam powered

wall that is surrounded by a magnet. Electrical current flows through the magnet, creating a

Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission to provide heat, which causes water to become steam. It is the steam that spins turbines and provides the energy. Then, the steam either rises up a cooling tower and is released into the air, or is cooled by being deposited into a lake or ocean (Goodman, 2017). There are three nuclear power plants in Michigan: Fermi 2, Palisades, and Cook Nuclear Plant ("Nuclear Power Plants", n.d.). The final reason why nuclear energy is so efficient is because nuclear power plants have a very high energy output compared to other plants. Coal plants have "an average capacity of 547 megawatts" ("Coal generates 44%", 2012). While this is decent, nuclear plants, on average, produce about double of what coal plants generate. The average nuclear plant can produce over 1,000 megawatts of energy! This makes it the most efficient way to produce electricity because of its high output of energy ("World Nuclear", 2017). But this high output is only possible because the plant can run around the clock. And that is only possible due to the uranium fuel being so powerful and efficient.
