live in today. Giving credit where it is due, I will say we have made an evident and beneficial
progression as far as the essentialist views of feminism. There are many ways to promote feminism

Abstract
Petrobras was an oil rig which was designed for an offshore production unit off the coast of Brazil.
The oil rig was primarily designed as a floating drilling unit but was modified in 1997 to 1999 for it
to become a production unit, to save money and space by moving the Emergency drain tanks
(EDTs) from the platform into the structure but they were not checked properly meaning there was
poor alignment to the production heaters, which lead to the accumulations of hydrocarbons which
brought about the initial explosion. There was also a second explosion, caused by gases escaping
through a leakage which lead to the structure's eventual sinking. In this report I will be discussing
which were more important to the disaster, technical or human factors and what risk controls should
have been in place to avoid this disaster from happening. The main technical flaws were component
failure without a backup system, poor control of the emergency notification system layout and poor
design of the placement of the safety critical paths. Some human errors were lack of training and
communication. The consequences which occurred from this disaster were financial losses,
environmental impact and modifications to the rules.

Democratic Platform These days there is a big war in politics, Republicans vs Democrats. The
democrats make up 31% of our population(google), they believe in many different things than the
Republicans. Some issues they disagree on are gun rights, abortion, LGBT rights, and the economy.
Many people in America work for minimum wage but working full time on min. wage isn't enough
to live on(Jarvie). There are several million min. wage workers in the U.S. Most have to use food
stamps or government subsidies to get by, the ones that don't barely get by. Many people work two

Canadian waters 315 kilometres southeast from St. John's Newfoundland, on the Grand Banks of
Newfoundland on February 15, 1982, with 84 crewmembers onboard. The Ocean Ranger was the
largest semi–submersible, offshore exploration, oil drilling platform of the day. Built in 1976 by
Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, it operated off the coasts of Alaska, New Jersey, Ireland, and in
November 1980 moved to the Grand Banks. Since it was so big it was considered to have the ability

For more safety, training requirements for offshore workers have greatly increased and new
facilities have been established to make sure that the workers have the safety skills to avoid another
disaster like the Ocean Ranger. Weather buoys were placed in certain areas throughout the waters in
Atlantic Canada to give weather information to forecasters and mariners. The oil companies were
held responsible because they did not train their workers for emergency procedures and did not do
any emergency drills. The Ocean Ranger could have survived the storm and flooding if the
crewmembers had understood how the ballast system worked. The two men working in the ballast
room had never been tested for what they had learned. The senior operator had only reached the
halfway point in his training, but he was promoted. The Ocean Ranger did not have enough safety
equipment on board for the amount of passengers they had. Families of lost crewmembers sued the
companies that owned and operated the Ocean Ranger. The companies were forced to pay millions

countries that used the Ocean Ranger, lost one of their sources of oil, which may have been a very

ideals on how to run the country and the people in it compared to the Republican platform. The most

Piper Alpha Disaster
Abstract
Piper Alpha was operated by Occidental Petroleum. The platform began its production in 1976, first
as an oil production and then later converted to oil and gas production. In the night of July 6th 1988,
the platform was engulfed in a catastrophic fire, which caused the death of 167 men and cost
billions of dollars in property damage. There are only 61 survivors who saved their lives by jump
off the platform in to the sea. At the time of the disaster, the Piper Alpha disaster was the worst
offshore disaster in terms of live lost and industry impact. There are two main factors that lead to the

After few hours, the night shift workers took over from the morning shift workers, the primary
condensate pump failed. None of the night shift workers were aware that a crucial part of the pump
had been removed and decided to start the backup pump. Gas escaped from the hole left by the
valve which was not closed tightly.
Gas audibly leaked out at high pressure, ignited and exploded and produces a catastrophic fire
which blown through the fire walls. The fire from the explosion had destroyed some of the oil lines
and soon larger quantities of stored oil were burning out of control. An automatic system, which has
been designed to spray water on such fire, had been turned off. Moreover, the accommodations were
design in such a way that not smoke–proofed.
Some of the workers realized that the only way to survive would be by jumping in to the sea and
hoping to be rescued by boat. Only 61 men were survived, but most of them died due to suffocated
carbon monoxide and fumes in the accommodations area on the Piper Alpha platform.
