TWO FILM POSTERS
Typography (font style and size)
The fonts used on the film poster of ‘Mirrors’ are a mix of san-serif
and serif fonts. The title of the film is in a red serif font which makes
the title stand out. The red signifies danger and blood which is
conventional for a horror film poster. It is also the only different
coloured text on the poster which draws the audience’s attention
because it is the most important part of the poster. Also the use of
the different type of text draws you to the title of the movie. It also
makes it contrast and the second ‘R’ in mirrors is reflecting the first
one makes the title stand out and makes the audience remember.
The use of the san-serif font on the poster makes it contrast the title
showing it is not as important as the title. The entire san-serif font is
smaller than the title also shows it is not as important as the title.
Image (shot type and mise-en-scene)
There is only one image on the ‘Mirrors’ poster. The image is off girl
screaming but due to the use of the low key lighting in the image,
half of the picture can’t be seen but this has a very good effect on
the poster. This allows the poster to create mystery and danger in
the image which is conventional for the horror genre. Of what you
can see on the image, you can see the girl’s eyes are really big and
which connotes danger and that she is scared which is conventional
for the genre. You can also see that she has blood dripping down
her face from her eye which is a conventional prop for a horror film.
Blood is always used in horror film to connote danger and with it
dripping from the girl’s eye it creates that more danger.
Colour
The colours used on this poster as basic and there isn’t many of
them on this film poster. Most of the text on the poster is white
which connotes purity and innocence which is unconventional for
this type of film poster. Black is the more conventional colour for this
type of music poster and it is the stand out colour on this poster.
The black on the poster represents danger and mystery which is a
conventional theme for a horror film poster. Red is also used for the
title of the film, this is used to make it stand out on the poster and
also red indicates blood and danger which is conventional for a
horror film genre. Overall the colours are used are very affective on
this poster as it creates danger and mystery which is conventional
for the horror film genre.
Layout
The route of the eye layout has been used in this film poster. It is
used very affectively to place parts of the poster in certain position.
It starts in the top left hand corner with the main image and a quote
of what other films the director has directed. The primary optical
area then has more of the main image which takes up a lot more of
the poster. This is conventional as it gives the audience an insight
into the film and it also shows the audience one of the characters in
the film. It then has the actors of the film and the release date at the
bottom of the poster which is conventional for a horror film poster so
the audience know who is in the film and if it has famous actors
then there is more chance of them wanting to go watch it.
Conventions (of form and genre)
This poster has used many aspects of conventional form as they
have included an ordered layout. They haven’t used much
information on the poster which is unconventional for a movie poster
but the information they have used is relevant and correct. They
have ensured the image and title are the main focus on the whole
poster which is conventional. The way they have used the route of
the eye is conventional to draw the audience’s attention and to make
sure everything is set out well. They have also used typography to
advertise the film because they have increased the font size of the
title and the important information so it stands out to the audience.
Typography (font style and size)
The fonts used on this poster are completely san-serif font. There
isn’t much text on the poster but the only texted on the poster is very
important. The title of the film is the biggest size of font on the poster
which is conventional for the horror film poster. It makes it stands out
and attracts the audience’s attention. The fonts are either white or
grey but all the important information is in white text which is
conventional as it makes it stand out. The entire fonts on the poster
are in block capital letters which is conventional as it makes it stand
out. The slogan of the film and the information about the producers
are in grey which is conventional as it is not as important as the title
or the release date of the film.
Image (shot type and mise-en-scene)
There is only one image on ‘The Purge’ poster which is conventional
for the horror film genre. The image is off the main antagonist in the
film, low key lighting is used in the image to make the character looks
scarier and to create the feeling of horror which is conventional for
the horror film genre. You can also see that the antagonist in the
image has a mask on which is a conventional horror film prop for the
antagonist. In this case, the mask is used to protect his real identity
which is conventional for a horror film and it is also used to create the
sense of horror and mystery which is conventional for the genre. You
can also see the expression that the antagonist is pulling is a cheeky
smile which is intimidating which is conventional for a horror film
because you think he is innocent before he becomes evil and this is
conventional for the genre.
Colour
The colours used on this poster are very basic as there aren’t many
of them. The low key lighting used makes it difficult to see the colours
but is also makes the poster have a very good affect. The main
colours are white and black which connote mystery and danger which
is conventional for this genre of film poster. You can also see the
colour of the mask which is a neutral skin colour which is
conventional as it indicates he is just a normal human but really he
isn’t. The use of the black and white creates a good and affective
contrasts of colours which will attract the eye of the viewers and
make them remember the poster so they will go and watch it.
Layout
The route of the eye layout has been used to set out the poster. This
is a conventional use of layout due to the effect it creates. It makes
everything very spaced and this is very affective way. The information
about the producers and other films they produced is in the top left
hand corner which is conventional to first thing you see and if they
see they have produced famous films, you know that this film will also
be popular. The main image is then in the middle of the poster
showing of the antagonist which is conventional as he is the main
feature on the poster so and will also be the main feature in the film.
This also helps the audience have an insight into what the film will be
about. You can also see the release date, slogan and title are all
together with the title being in the biggest text which is conventional
as it makes it stand out.
Conventions (of form and genre)
This poster has used many aspects of conventional form as they have included
an ordered layout. All the information they have used is important and relevant
to the film which is conventional but on the same hand they haven’t used much
text which is conventional. They also made sure the title and the image are
the main features of the poster and so they made them the biggest features on
the poster which is conventional as it makes them stand out as they are very
important. The colours are also very dark which is conventional for the genre of
the music as black and white are colours associated with horror and mystery
and that’s what the film is about. The conventional use of the route of the eye
is very good as the poster is laid out very well which makes everything on the
poster easy to see and read. The typography is also very affective as the title
is in bigger font than all the other text showing it is the most important piece of
text which is conventional for the horror film poster.
TWO MAGAZINE COVERS
Typography (font style and size)
The masthead of this issue of ‘Empire’ magazine uses a san-serif
font which connotes the importance of the title of the magazine. It
also draws in the attention of the audience as the title would be the
first thing you see when they read the front cover. A san-serif font
has been used for the cover lines, no serif fonts have been used on
this film poster. This is because san-serif fonts fit all genres and film
magazines don’t just fit one genre of film. The fonts are also clear to
read because of this and this would allow the audience to be able to
read.
Image (shot type and mise-en-scene)
There are a variety of images used for this film magazine cover. They
have used a close up for the main image on the front of the
magazine. This emphasises the theme of the magazine and the film
that it is featuring. This image is about vampires and this is portrayed
by the mise-en-scene used. They have also used smaller images in
the corners which are also close ups. These are used to advertise
the other characters in the film. All of these shot types are used
conventional for a horror film magazine as the images are close up’s
and makes it easy for audience to recognise who the characters are.
The main image on the magazine allows for the audience to see the
expressions of the main character and also allows the audience to
see that he is a vampire, this can be portrayed because of the
makeup he us clearly wearing. They have also emphasised the low
key lighting which connotes the sense of danger and mystery about
the character.
Colour
On this film poster, they have used a variety of colours to link all the
different movie genres together. In this issue they have used the
vampire theme and have used a lot of red, black and yellow. These
colours connote danger, blood and mystery which are stereotypically
associated with vampires. The colour on the image is very pale which
is conventional for the theme as vampire’s skin is pale. The
masthead and cover lines are linked together through the use of the
red and white theme. They have used yellow which is a very affective
colour as it stands out and also makes good contrasts with the white
and red.
Layout
The layout of this magazine is very ordered and spaced out which is conventional and every affective. The use of the route of
the eye layout allows for this ordered layout to be very affective and allows the audience to be able to find stuff. The masthead is
the main feature of the magazine cover and it is at the start of the route of the eye and means that it would be the first thing you
look at. The image also takes up a lot of space on the magazine but everything is placed around the image. This is conventional
as the image is the main feature and the most important as it is what the magazine is about. The space around the image makes
the image stand out more and the cover lines are placed around the main image and so is anything information or pictures. This
is conventional as these are not as important as the main image and they are just fitted around the image to make it look
affective and also not cluttered.
Language
They have use is very powerful language and is very short and snappy
to attract the audiences eye. These sentences get to the point very
quickly which is conventional ad this helps advertise the articles to the
audience so they will buy the magazine. The name of the magazine is
very powerful; ‘EMPIRE’ connotes power and dominance and could
also mean it’s the best movie magazine out there.
Conventions (of form and genre)
There are many aspects that make this magazine
conventional. The use of the route of the eye makes the
layout very ordered and affective which is conventional for
the top magazines. The wide range of fonts and colours used
throughout the magazine is conventional as they contrast
well and attract the audience’s eyes. The images used are
conventional as the use of mise-en-scene and shot types
means the images are easy to know what they are of and for
example you can tell the image is off a vampire. They
magazine used a variety of genres, they make this
conventional due to the variety of fonts and colours that could
be used.
