A2 MEDIA: POPPY ROSE
How effective is the
combination on your main
product and your ancillary
texts?
Section A: Poster
The key aspects that I included in my poster consisted of; lighting, the main image and the text choice.
The lighting effect that I used on the main characters face (Rosie) was used to highlight it and to make the poster
seem more eerie in general, I feel this enabled the audience to know automatically that the film is in the horror
genre.
I decided to make the text choice that I included on my poster to be very unusual, this was used for the title of the
film and for the quotes given; on the poster I have given each a quote in a different dull colour, I feel this followed
the horror ‘theme’ but also made the poster in general more inviting and smart.
The last key aspect of my poster was the main image I have used; for this I have chosen a close up of the main
character Rosie. I felt that this image was very effective as she was looking straight at the camera in a very
determined way, I felt this gave an insight into her character in the film and her personality. The image was also
made darker on Adobe Photoshop which again reinforces the fact that the film is within the horror genre.
Section A: Poster
I used the film poster from the 2013 film Mama as inspiration for my own poster for Ring Rosie. I felt that it was
very effective even though it featured little writing. I have mimicked this in my own poster as I had a strong central
image and felt that it only needed a few quotes to hint at what the film was about, leaving it feeling mysterious.
The poster for Mama includes a basic but sharp font, I have decided to use a sharp font also; I have chosen a more
unusual one and I feel this makes my poster and the text featured on the poster stand out more.
Section A: Poster
The text used on the poster includes ‘once bitten who will survive?’ and I have made sure the poster quoted it
from an existing magazine to reflect real-life poster; mimicking this I also included another quote which was
quoted from my magazine ‘WATCH’.
The use of the quote ‘Once bitten who will survive?’ automatically suggests the film is centred around horror/gore
or flesh. This could automatically entice a certain audience for the film. Meanwhile, the quote ‘It will scare you to
death’ is also effective as it implies the genre of the film and also mentions a vital theme to the film ‘death’.
The colours used includes dull greys and browns. Staying away from the typical black red and white colours that
are usually featured on horror posters; I have decided to include these colours because I thought it made my
poster draw more attention to my main image on the poster while evoking the grubby feels of modern horrors.
I decided to use this image of Rosie on the poster because I thought it was very intense and intriguing. By
positioning this picture to the left of the poster it was also the first thing the audience will see and look at on the
poster, automatically capturing their interest.
Section B: Magazine
I included many key aspects in the magazine cover. Firstly, I think the title I used for the magazine was quite
important; I decided to call the magazine ‘WATCH’. By calling it this I thought it automatically helped the audience
identify that the magazine is based around films in general, I felt that giving it a bold straight to the point name
would help it stand out against competitors on the shop shelf.
Secondly, the image used on the magazine was quite unusual, I chose this image because it shows a woman with
her back to the camera holding up an axe which has a bloody ‘dead’ hand attached to it. I thought that this image
was really effective because it was strong. The use of the hand hanging off the weapon automatically suggests the
film mentioned has something to do with the undead, it also gave the magazine an automatic element of fear. This
image also did not sexualise the woman shown in the image like most horror films do, I felt this implied further to
the audience that this film includes a lot of surprises. This image also fitted perfectly on the magazine cover because
I was able to fit cover lines around the image nicely.
Other key aspects of the magazine include the cover lines; I have included the cover lines in a black, white and red
font. Which I think links directly with horror films and the typical colours associated with horror films.
Section B: continued…
The first cover line used is ‘American Horror Story. Hotel. Coming Soon’, this is written in a white font in
the same font American Horror Story use for their titles. I have included this quote because I think the
audience who watch American Horror Story will be the niche market for my magazine and Ring Rosie.
The next line – in a different font and colour - I have used is ‘Into the Woods, too scary for children?
Fantasy or Frightening?’ The variation in fonts and colours used on one cover line, I feel this helped make
the magazine seem more young and trendy. In contrast ‘A sneak peek of your favourite horror scenes’ is
written in a black basic font, because it may attract a larger audience for this in particular issue.
‘Ken Foree his return in Wrath of the Dead’ by using the name Ken Foree I am also attracting fans of this
actor, because he has starred in Dawn of the Dead and I thought that the use of his name on a newer
issue could help get new fans into his movies and could create a large market for this magazine.
I have also included advertising for my own trailer on the magazine ‘Ring Rosie. 20th April 2015 most
anticipated film of the year, the next Shaun of the Dead’ by including this I have linked all of my media
products together, and by adding my own trailer to a cover line would make it look more professional.
Section B: Magazine
Here shows a side by side view of WATCH Magazine and EMPIRE.
The similarities between these two magazine covers include,
font type and size, the number of different colours used, the
positioning and size of the main cover photo, the positioning
of the text around the main cover photo and the position of
the barcode.
The differences between the two magazine covers include
the genre in the magazine covers; WATCH being associated
with the horror genre on this issue and EMPIRE mixing the
genre of its issue.
In general I think that WATCH is very similar to EMPIRE
magazine. WATCH has more similarities in common with
EMPIRE than differences and likeness of the two helps make
WATCH more real and more realistic, as I can now picture it
on the shelves in a shop.
Section C: Main Product and
Ancillary
Ring Rosie: Poster
Ring Rosie: Magazine front
cover
Ring Rosie: shot from Trailer
Section C: Main Product and
Ancillary
The niche audience that we are aiming for would be equally male and female, I think the gender proportions on
this trailer would be very similar because although stereo typically more men enjoy horror films with body horror
the film is centred around two lead female roles which I think would spark interest with the female horror fans,
and female film-goers in general.
I believe the ideal age range for Ring Rosie would be teenagers, more concisely between the ages of 15-21. I think
this would appeal to this age range most because all the characters used are young and in their teenage years
themselves, they will understand the cultural references made in the movie for that generation.
