Question 3
What kind of media
institution might
distribute your media
product and why?
It is important to identify and choose the correct institution to create and distribute a film
because audiences may have different views and expectations from the different institutions.
For example Production Company’s may have certain movie genres that they focus on, or are
well known to distribute. An example, Warner Bros are known for making high budget films for
the action genre, but also many thrillers. Pixar studios are known for distributing animated
films targeted at children.
The popular institutions have the reputation that allows their audience to tell what type of
movies they distribute. So all institutions allow the audiences to identify what type of movies
they might release. Also, if an institution is good, they will already have a loyal and
established audience which will draw them into watching a new film by them. Having this loyal
audience is beneficial as it is already one form of promotion. Also, certain Institutions can
Institutions…
• We have decided that ‘Lionsgate’ should be the
institution to distribute our Thriller Production. This is
because of the amount of success they have had with
the past thriller films they have distributed, including
the well known ‘’Saw’’ sequels. All 6 of the ‘Saw’
sequels have been successful amongst the thriller
audience which is why choosing them will be
beneficial. ‘Lionsgate’ also has a good reputation
amongst audiences as well as the industry.
• Other films produced by Lionsgate that follow the
Thriller genre as their narrative also portrays the story
of a young female who has an alternative side to them
are ‘Jessable’ and ‘American Pyshco’.
• Because of this, I can trust that Lionsgate will allow us
to produce a great thriller film that will be part of their
franchise of successful thriller films.
My chosen
Institution…
• Choosing ‘Lionsgate’ institution to be our distributor is very
beneficial and helps us in many ways as they are a popular
institution with high budgets available so this will help in the
production and distribution stages of out film.
• Their already established fan base will help us attract all the right
viewers into watching our film and throughout their success with
their past thrillers, we are very confident that we will have the same
success.
• Another good feature of ‘Lionsgate’ is that as they have made so
many thrillers in the past, they have a good understanding of how to
portray the thriller conventions to the audience.
• Just like these films, we aim and hope for the same success or
more, with the help of ‘Lionsgate’.
• Themes that ‘Lionsgate’ usually portray: greed, obsession, fear,
violence and vulnerability. Fear, obsession and vulnerability are
themes we portray within out thriller.
