2. What is a Production company?
A production company helps with the creation of a
film, it assists with budgeting, scheduling, scripting
and casting. The Production company looks over the
film from the initial idea to the completion.
Some Production companies are specialised in
producing a typical genre of film. An example of this
would be Lions Gate as Lions Gate have experience in
producing thriller movies, an example of this would be
saw.
3. What is a distributor?
A film distributor is in charge of marketing a film, A
production company will approach a distributor in the
hope to make a distribution agreement. A distribution
agreement can be based on one of two models these
are either the leasing of profit sharing models. Leasing
involves the distributor agreeing to pay a fixed amount
for the rights to distribute the film. Profit sharing
involves sharing the net profit of the movie (Usually
around 10%-50% to the distributor)

When a distributor has leased a movie, they will try to
determine the best strategy for opening the movie,
there are several factors to consider;

5. What Production Company and why?
The production company I chose was twisted pictures,
this is because they are a independent production
company who specialise in making films of a
horror/thriller genre’s they have made films such as
the saw franchise, dead silence and Texas chainsaw. I
think that they would be a good choice for production
company as they know how to target an audience
effectively and operate in a niche market. Another
reason why I chose this production company is that
they worked with Lions Gate which is my chosen
distributor to make the saw franchise which grossed
$873 million.

7. What Distribution Company and why?
The Distribution company I decided to use for my
media production is Lions Gate. I chose Lions Gate as
they have a huge amount of experience distributing
films of the same genre as mine.
The saw franchise is a horror/thriller film, this shows
that lions gate would be wise choice as a distribution
company.
