1. Me & My Movies - Horror
Fanatic Film
Active Spectatorship
This is the theory that states that the relationship between the audience and the production depends on the film, it is how
the film is received and responded to. There are three different ways of deciding on a film and they are Preferred,
Negotiated or Oppositional. Through these films sub cultures have been built, from which cosplay event were created.
Intertextuality
This term was created by Julia Kristeva in 1966, she said “Each text is the absorption and transformation another.” This
means that media text reference have: Convention, Language, Format and Era. For example, Horror usually have low
key lighting, the colour red, scary characters etc.
Media Literacy
Media literacy means the analysis of multiple modes of media, genres and formats. For example, Resident Evil which
was both a film and video game, this means when audience member watch the film they could want to play the game,
vice versa, this means the sales for both film and game would increase.
Social Networking
Social media has become of the world wonders, this is because you can connect with anyone instantly, this changed the
game for the film industry because you can advertise with having to pay as much as television broadcasters charge,
furthermore for smaller filmmakers it allowed them to advertise for free. Furthermore, Horror film would obviously
benefit from social media, because they main target audience is young adults, who dominate the social networking
platforms such as Twitter, Facebook etc.
Conditions of Reception
Condition of reception is when audience members are told an opinion of a film, which changes their mind, for example
when Ring 2 came out it was rated really low on Rotten tomatoes, this would affect the decision of the audience,
because they won’t want to waste their time on a badly rated film.
Pre and Post Viewing Experiences
This is the reaction of the audience before and after viewing the film, the genre that mostly gets affect from this is
horror the reason why is because jump scares and plot twists and main characteristics, and if you expect them then the
film won’t be as good as first thought for many audience members.
