Media evaluation
1.
2. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP AND CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
The first thing I wanted to do in my film’s opening sequence was to introduce the film’s exposition early on in
the form of text giving the audience a brief insight into the context of the world which my film is set in.
This technique can be seen throughout many popular sci-fi films such as the Hunger Games and the well
known Star Wars franchise.
To give the product an immediate place in my chosen genre of sci-fi I made it take place in a post
apocalyptic world. This effect was achieved in post production by changing the colour saturation to
make the lush green environment of the quarry look bleak and less colourful. An example of this
technique being used in a real media product would be in the film Pitch black which was set in a harsh
and barren alien world. I challenged this convention of barren and dry environments associated with post
apocalyptic settings by making the film take place in a wooded and natural area which gave the
saturation added in post production a massive contrast to the ‘mise en scene’ in each shot.
Sound effects of wildlife in the background creates connotations of an exotic and far away environment.
This creates a contrast with the bleak filter used in post production.
3. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
In my opening sequence the antagonists who are after the young girl Eve appear to be dressed in fairly well
made and upper class clothing which gives the audience on exactly where they stand on the social
ladder, in this case fairly high up. They also are shown in camera shots facing from the ground up to give
them connotations of power.
On the other hand the young boy Freer appears fairly messy with an un tucked shirt but still attempts to
appear as a higher class by wearing a tie and shirt. This could be seen as an attempt to appear more
powerful and to have a higher social standing.
4. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
I think that a distribution company such as Momentum pictures would be the perfect choice in distributing my
film. In the past Momentum has had a reputation of distributing independent Sci-Fi films such as the
successful and vastly independent film ‘Monsters’ which was directed, edited, cast and filmed by Gareth
Edwards.
I would also choose Momentum Pictures due to the fact that while it focusses on independent films, as of
late it has been responsible for the UK an d US distribution of fantasy horror Troll Hunter. While vastly
different from my film it still shows me that this distribution company has experience with distributing
film products abroad and into US which would be my main goal after the UK releases.
Also once again taking reference from the film Monsters I would be working on a fairly tight budget so
the entire product would be shot on location and without set adding a sense of realism to my media
product.
5. WHO WOULD THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT BE?
After using survey monkey to gather information from people on Facebook early on in my planning I decided
on the film genre of Sci-Fi. This gave me an insight in to the type of audience that my media product
would be aimed at. One of the main films I have taken reference from (editing and location wise) is The
Hunger Games which is a 12a, I took this into account when deciding on the films classification.
I also talked to the actors about their point of view of the film and how it could be received by the
audience. I then decided that the film would be aimed at a 12yrs and up demographic. This is because the
film while fairly un- violent in its opening gets darker and darker as it goes on and eventually involves
moderate threat and violence.
6. HOW WOULD YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
To attract my target audience to the film I would first focus on social networking to spread interest in the
product e.g. Facebook pages, twitter, reddit etc. On these pages would be a link to the production blog
which would make the viewer feel more included as they will be able to leave feedback and help shape
the final product.
The genre of Sci-fi in recent years has gained massive popularity. With examples like the MARVEL
Studio’s giant The Avengers and JJ Abrams film adaptation of Star Trek members of the public who have
an interest in these films will be likely to notice a film in that genre which I can use to my advantage.
I could also create behind the scenes production vlogs which I can add regularly to YouTube to keep the
audience interested during the post production phase. I could also use the google blogger to keep
people constantly updated with production choices,
