1. Ben Faust, Grade 1, RL.1.4
“The student will identify words or phrases that suggest feelings or appeal
to the sense.”
2. Jeremiah was a house
cat. A large, friendly
house cat.
Jeremiah spent most
of his days on the
sunroom chair
soaking up the hot
Florida sun.
In between naps,
Jeremiah would stroll
inside and nibble on
bits of tuna and
chicken left behind
for him by his human.
Look closely at the targeted vocabulary words
in the text. What kinds of senses or emotions
do you think of when you read each of these
words?
3.
One rainy afternoon, while
napping under the bed,
Jeremiah saw the most
unusual sight.
A small gray blur, raced
before his eyes.
A mouse? A squirrel? What
could it be?
Before he could rise to his
nimble paws, the blur
raced passed him again.
And this time he caught a
glimpse of something
familiar.
Whiskers? A tail? No it
couldn’t be…
What images do you see in your mind when you
read the word “blur”? What other words does it
make you think of as you read?
Look at the targeted vocabulary words on this
page, what sense would you use when thinking of
these words?
4.
Just as he was about to
pounce, the gray blur
stopped in it’s tracks
and stared directly into
his eyes….
“Meow?” it said. “Hello
new friend!”
Crouching before him,
peeking every so
slightly beneath the bed
was a little gray kitten.
There are two targeted vocabulary words on
this page. Think of your 5 sense, which sense
would you need in order to peek or to stare?
When I read the word “crouching” I know that
the little kitten is bending down to see Jeremiah
more clearly. What would be another word for
“crouching”?
5. “New friend?” said Jeremiah.
“Yes!” said the little gray
kitten.
“Your humans found me in
the rain this morning and tell
me that this is my new
home. My name is Sophie.”
Jeremiah was interested but
a little unsure of the cheerful
new creature.
“Do you like tuna?” he asked.
“Do you like to lay in the
sunshine?”
When you read the word “tuna” what senses
doe it make you think of using?
6. “Yes I do!” replied
Sophie. “I like chicken
too” she continued.
After looking closely at
her sparkly green eyes
and her soft gray nose,
Jeremiah decided that
there was no danger
here and that perhaps
Sophie could become
his new best friend.
Tell me what kinds of feelings you think of when you
read the targeted vocabulary on this page?
