2. INTRODUCTION
TEPUK REX - Use of Xtegra Safety Curtains on RGV - June 2015
BLAST CURTAINS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED TO SAVE TIME AND MONEY
WHILE NOT HINDERING NORMAL OPERATIONS
Reason Installed
• Two blast curtains are installed on the drill floor to isolate the stand
pipe manifold and the choke manifold
• It allows high pressure testing on those two manifolds while work is
performed on the drill floor, leading to a time and cost saving
Easy Installation & Handling
• Curtains are easily installed
• Approximately 8 days for a welding company to install (not
including prior drawings and survey to be drafted) curtains around
stand pipe and choke manifolds
• Curtains are on fixed rails so can be opened out and extended easily
and secured away when not required

AFT Xtegra Manifold Curtain Containment System
The AFT Xtegra Manifold Curtain Containment System (MCCS) that AFT has designed and
manufactured for the offshore oil and gas industry to protect against up to 25,000 psi pressure
releases from manifolds on the drill deck. This system was designed to meet and exceed API
standard 53, 4th edition.
The AFT Xtegra Manifold Curtain Containment System provides unprecedented containment
and mitigation of high psi and frag events. The AFT Xtegra fabric works within the entire system
to handle distributed loads within a fully integrated system inclusive of curtains, attachment
points, beam roller system and steel frame that comprise the entire system.
AFT Xtegra is a product of Advanced Fabric Technologies, LLC and is sold exclusively through
Advanced Fabric Technologies, LLC and its registered vendor affiliates.

TIME SPENT TESTING THE MANIFOLDS WHEN BOP ITSELF IS FULLY TESTED IS NOW SAVED
Why Does It Save Time ?
• The BOP test is divided in two main components:
– The test of the BOP itself, the rams and the valves
– The test of the Stand Pipe Manifold and the Choke Manifold
• There are more tests to perform on the manifolds than on the BOP itself
• Therefore, even if tests on BOP and manifolds could be performed in parallel, at the end
the manifold tests would still be performed in live rig time
• The manifolds are on drill floor and are under high pressure right next to the area around
the rotary table where drill crew are working therefore work around rotary table is
typically stopped during a choke manifold test (i.e. no tripping pipe)
• The blast curtains allow the operations to start again as soon as the BOP itself is entirely
tested and the test string is out of the hole, because the rest of the choke manifold tests
are performed behind them, protecting the crew on the drill floor

THE TIME SAVED RECORDINGS LED TO THE MONEY SAVED
How was the money saved determined?
• During 6 BOP tests performed on the Rowan Gorilla V, the time taken for the manifold tests
performed behind the blast curtains whilst performing other online activity (i.e. tripping pipe)
was recorded to measure the time saved by the curtain
• Those tests would otherwise have been performed with the operations stopped, and at full
rig rate.
• Time saved was linked to rig daily cost:
M = T * RC / (24*60)
With M the money saved, T the time saved in
minutes and RC the rig daily cost

11. COMMENTS
TIME AND MONEY SAVED DEPEND WIDELY ON THE SPECIFICS OF EACH TEST
Type of Test
• The time saved varies according to the efficiency of the tests performed on the BOP itself
• If those tests are long, then it means more tests performed in parallel on the BOP itself and the
manifolds, when the blast curtains are not needed because the test string is in the hole and
prevents work anyway, so less time available to be saved as a result
Daily Rig Cost
• Money saved also depends of the daily costs of operation when the BOP test was performed
• During expensive rig operations (i.e. completion) the time savings of course translate into a
greater cost saving
Test Configuration
• The two most recent BOP tests show a particularly low amount of time saved
• This is because at this time, 4” DP was introduced into the drill string and therefore this required
a test on the VBRs resulting in 5”, 5-1/2” and 4” DP test assemblies to be made up and run
• This means more tests on the choke manifold can be captured in the BOP test itself leaving less
to be performed offline i.e. less opportunity to save time

12. CONCLUSION
Xtegra safety curtains have been installed on the Rowan Gorilla V around
the 15K Choke Manifold and Stand Pipe Manifold to achieve:
1. Addition of curtain has provided increased protection of personnel during high pressure
testing by isolating the equipment during the tests
2. Protection of drill floor area has permitted simultaneous productive operations (tripping
pipe) and allow the pressure testing of the Manifolds offline
3. An average cost saving of 117 k£ ($178,000 USD)/pressure test on the RGV across the 6
first BOP tests giving a potential saving of 900 k£ ($1.37M USD) on the current well
(WFD) that could be realized, assuming 8 tests
Following installation on the RGV to achieve the above safety and cost
benefits, it is recommended that blast curtains are installed on all jack-up
units with a similar and suitable rig floor configuration
