Compare And Contrast Pocahontas And The Powhatan Dilemma
Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma

It is said that there are many different versions to a story. There is one persons story, then there is an
other person's story, and then, there is the truth. "Our memories change each time they are recalled.
What we recall is only a facsimile of things gone by." Dobrin, Arthur. "Your Memory Isn't What You

Townsend examines the following months on the settling of the English, as well as Pocahontas's
kidnapping, to her imprisonment, down to her marriage to John Rolfe, her conversion to
Christianity, and finally her death.
A major contrast between the Disney Stories and movie of Pocahontus, was that they had failed to
mention her kidnapping. Pocahontas' kidnapping was unjust and surprising as it was by the
community of the man who would be her husband and later the father to her child, although
Pocahontas had already been married since the age of twelve or thirteen to a man named Kocoom.
Pocahontas' early marriage was then ended when her warrior Kocoom had then disappeared, for
reasons unknown. After this disappearance, Pocahontas later then married to John Rolfe as she had
the choice to choose any man she wanted without the fear of being judged and called cold for her
remarriage. Another major difference between Disneys portrayal of Pocahontas and Townsend's
portrayal of Pocahontas is her decision to be baptized. Although it would have been seen as a
betrayal to her tribe, Pocahontas chose to be baptized, with the consent of her father. Even though it
was well known to Powhatan (Pocahontas' father), that with his consent of Pocahontas' baptism
(now Rebecca), he would lose not his people's respect, but as well as their trust, he

How Did Pocahontas Affect Society
ich was considered her secret name, and Amonute, which was more public. Her early life was just
the start when it came to the impact she had on society. Pocahontas became a prominent figure in
the colonization process of the new world due to her civil interactions with English settlers,
specifically John Smith and John Rolfe. When most people think of Pocahontas, John Smith comes
to mind as well. John Smith first met Pocahontas when she was estimated to be ten or eleven years
old. He, at this time period, was about twenty eight years of age. That being said, there is no
evidence of any sort of romantic interaction between the two. Although the romantic factor between
them is often thought of due to their portrayal in movies and other ... Show more content on

Pocahontas first met John Rolfe while staying in a Virginian settlement known as, Henricus. At this
time period, the idea of intermarriage of Native Americans and English colonists was still fairly
new. That being said, John Rolfe had to pledge his proposal of marriage for Pocahontas to the
governor of Virginia. In this long letter to the governor, he discussed his undeniable love for
Pocahontas. He also claimed that by marrying her, he would be "saving her soul." Despite the fact
that Rolfe's romantic feelings toward Pocahontas are quite noticeable, her feelings towards him are
never actually mentioned. However, their wedding took place on April 5, 1614. After they became
married, they lived on a plantation in Virginia for a couple of years where their son, Thomas, was
born. The marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe was one of the most significant events that related
to the interactions between the Native Americans and the colonists. It created feelings of peace and
tranquility between the two vastly different groups of people. It also helped establish trade and
commerce among them. Before the wedding occurred, the first Anglo–Powhatan War was in
process, and the marriage helped put an end to the fighting. Furthermore, the marriage to Rolfe
converted Pocahontas to the religion of Christianity. This act of conversion was immensely
important to officials back in England because it accomplished one of their primary goals of

Disney Vs. Reality : Disney Versus Reality
Disney versus Reality When one says the name Pocahontas, the most likely image that comes to
mind is of that one Disney created nearly twenty years ago. Tall, super model body with long ebony
hair worthy of a L'Oreal commercial, in a short cocktail dress with a typical Native American theme
to it. She is eighteen and just met John Smith; a twenty one year old Englishman with golden hair
and a body of a Greek god. At least, that is what Disney's version of Pocahontas had happen, and if
he were around at the time, John Smith would wholeheartedly agree. The truth could not be any
further in the opposite direction of what the directors of Disney's Pocahontas had in mind when they
first concepted the future film that would trick the minds of many children across the United States.
To Pocahontas' and Smith's age, appearance, and personality, to the events leading up to their first
meeting and what happened afterwards, Disney took their own liberties with it and went for it.
Pocahontas is a pretty name, almost rolls off the tongue. It's a shame however, that that is not her
real name. Her actual name is really Matoaka, while Pocahontas was just a nickname for the young
daughter of Chief Powhatan, meaning the naughty one or spoiled child, which can lead to some
negative perceptions of Matoaka (Kelso). Her name is not the only misconception that Disney
emphasis, like her age for example. The animated film depicts her at the age of eighteen, but in
actuality she was twelve at the

Many moons ago, an Indian girl was not yet born but there were many problems with Indians and
the white man as the Indians. This unborn child would become a huge part of colony history
between the Indians and the English; this child was to be recognized in history by many different

Grace Steele Woodward. This book covers many different subjects in Pocahontas's life. The book
begins with a background of The Powhatans, Pocahontas's people. She was not just a little Indian

Her secret name only known by her tribesmen was Matoax meaning "Little Snow

watch and observed the new strangers in her land. She starts to see how they ran life and govern
themselves. Pocahontas was still very young when the first settles land at Jamestown. When she
starting visiting the colony there were only about 100 Englishmen, the Anglican chaplain, and the

26–year–old. Captain Newport arrested Smith on route to Jamestown for inciting mutiny among
some of the crewmen on the ship Susan Constant. Smith was released after landing at Jamestown
but Smith could not take the oath of allegiance to King James or sit with the council until June 10,
when he was cleared of all charges. (Woodward, 55) John Smith, to Pocahontas, was the most
approachable of all the English colonists. He took the initiative to learn the Powhatan language and
try to communicate between the Indians and the colonists. Smith also knew that the Indians could
help the colonists in their time of need. Pocahontas's father was a little less interested in talking t the

The Film Analysis Of The Movie Poahontas
In the infamous movie Pocahontas(1995), the Disney franchise has a way of covering the truth
behind the real story and person of Pocahontas by creating fictional animals, an untrue love story,
and an unrealistic ending in order to gain children's interest. The movie starts with John Smith and
European settlers coming to the New World in order to gain land and resources, which includes
getting rid of the Native Americans that are already occupying the Virginia land, people that they
pronounce as savages. Pocahontas is dealing with her father, the chief of the tribe, trying to get her
to marry an important member of the tribe in order to gain her more respect and get her a role and
title in the community. Afterward, Pocahontas and John finally meet and begin a romance even
though both of their groups are vigorously trying to remove the other from the land. Near the end,
Pocahontas protects John from being executed, however he eventually is shot by one of his own and
is on his way back to England as his only means of surviving. The movie ends with John leaving
and Pocahontas and her tribe contributing food to the European Settlers as they begin their journey
back to England. The first scenes of the movie I would consider the director's interpretation of
history to be unbiased and moderately accurate, it shows the European Settlers making their way to
Virginia in hopes of gathering gold and other valuable resources, while discussing the possibility of
encountering Indians

The Movie Pocahontas Was Released By Disney Essay
The movie Pocahontas was released by Disney in 1995, and its sequel Pocahontas II: Journey to a
New World three years later. Together the movies depict, to a certain extent, the story of Native
American "princess", Pocahontas. I will watch both movies in their entirety, paying close attention
to detail, and take note of how exactly the story is portrayed. Afterwards, I will research as much as
I can about Pocahontas and compare it to what is presented in the Disney film. I will then asses why
I think, exactly, the filmmakers left out or changed what they did.
Due to the fact that I am dealing with a story that involves English colonization, a situation that I
know for a fact involved genocide and oppression of the natives, I suspect that most of my findings
will lead me to believe that Disney changed the story in a way that makes it as innocent as possible.
There are a few historical inaccuracies in the movie that I am already aware of and plan on
questioning. Why doesn't the movie show more death? Why is her age not accurate in the movie?
Why is Pocahontas portrayed as an only child instead of a sibling of 19 other children?
I will search the databases EBSCOhost and JStor with the following key words: Pocahontas, John
Smith, Jamestown, and Powhatan .... And comb through the results to find which articles offer the
most insightful perspectives.

Due by November 21, 2016 The book "Pocahontas: Medicine woman, spy, entrepreneur, diplomat"
was written to explain how Pocahontas was important in American history; and to explain the roles
she played in our history. Paula Gunn Allen purpose of writing this book was to explain Pocahontas
Life, she also states that although there are many stories about Pocahontas it is difficult to know if
they are facts or not. Allen also states that her goal writing this book was to bring to life Pocahontas
culture and how she played many roles in society. Pocahontas united two worlds The Powhatan with

Allen argues that, by emphasizing an ideal romance, attention is taken away from the true economic
motive of Smith and the colonists: attaining wealth, prosperity and progress at any cost. The
mythological romance between John Smith and Pocahontas lends a "mystique to those original
corporate executives" where it otherwise would not exist. George Orwell once wrote, "Who controls
the past controls the future." I applaud Allen for challenging the traditional narrative about this
historical figure and for giving readers a chance to look at human relations with the environment in
our present and our future. I would recommend this book because it tells you Pocahontas's story in
way that is easy to understand, and challenges what historians believe about her.

Pocahontas's Effect On The People Of Jamestown
Did you know that Pocahontas isn't just a Disney character? Pocahontas was born around 1595 in
what is now North America, but no one knows exactly when she was born. She was the favorite
daughter of Chief Powhatan's, but her mother is unknown. She helped many people, including the
people of Jamestown. John Smith and John Rolfe, citizens of Jamestown, affected Pocahontas' life
greatly. Pocahontas helped the people of Jamestown survive through their first winter; she brought
them food and told them when the Native Americans were going to attack. Throughout most of her
life, Pocahontas lived in Tsenacommacah. She learned to do the many things most young ladies did,
such as foraging for food and firewood, farm, and build thatched houses. Pocahontas was known by
more than one name. Matoaka and Amonute were two of her names. Pocahontas was her casual
name, meaning 'playful one'. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

After this, the tribe adopted him as their brother. They called him Nantaquoud. John Smith stayed
for many days, telling them of his King across the ocean. Finally, he went back to Jamestown, where
the people had become sick and couldn't find food. Through the winter and spring, Pocahontas

Pocahontas: The Name Of Powhatan Indians
Well my one thousand word essay is over Pocahontas. I guess I should start from the beginning as
we all must do in this situation. She was believed to be born by historians around the 1596 in
Cloucester County, Virginia; but the exact date was unknown. Pocahontas had many names, it was a
very normal thing for Powhatan Indians (the tribe that she was from) to have several different
names. The different names had different meanings for different times and different situations.
Native Americans were often given secret names that a select few knew about. Pocahontas's secret
name was "Matoaka" which means in their tongue "Bright stream between the hills," but was later
also known as Amonute which can not be translated. The name "Pocahontas" was ... Show more

She had learned that John Smith was still alive. John Smith did not meet up with her but had written
to the wife of King James, Queen Anne. He wished that Pocahontas be treated as a royal visitor and
with the high respect. Although Pocahontas was not a princess, the English believed her to be and
portrayed her as one. The inscription on a 1616 engraving of her which was made for the company,
reads, "MATOAKAALS REBECCA FILIA POTENTISS : PRINC: POWHATINI IMP : VIRGINI/–

Empire of Virginia." Many of the English people believed the Powhatan to be an extremely
powerful ruler of an empire and presumably appropriated Pocahontas with the title of "Princess of
The Powhatan." Most Englishmen were enthusiastic towards Pocahontas and she was treated very
well. From being entertained by festivals, and many other things that women in London did not have

Pocahontas Research Paper
The story of Pocahontas is one that is well known to almost everyone. Her life has been adapted into
many different films, one of the most famous being the Disney film in 1995. As the daughter of a
powerful Indian leader, Pocahontas seemed to be born for greatness. Throughout her life,
Pocahontas showed courage, selflessness, bravery, and the ability to give up her own self for the
better of those around her. Pocahontas was a woman that all women aspire to be like. Although she
is remembered sanguinely, Pocahontas did not become the woman we know and love without trials
of her own. Her life started out as one bright and full of hope, there were obstacles that she may not

Now this land is known as Virginia. Over one hundred settlers had arrived, including Captain John
Smith. (Pocahontas) Of course, these Englishmen and the Tsenacommacah Indians had different
encounters over the months passed. It was not until December that Pocahontas would actually meet
John Smith. In that month, Smith was surveying the Chickahominy River, when a hunting party
captured him. The leader of this hunting party was a relative of the Powhatan Chief, and Smith was
brought back to Pocahontas's home in Werowocomoco. (Pocahontas) In Smith's writings, he
explained what happened before Pocahontas saved his life. Paraded around different Indian towns,
Smith was finally brought before Powhatan. As he was in front of him, two large stones were placed
on the ground and Smith was forced to lay his head in the middle. His death would come by the
smashing of his head from a club held by one of the warriors of Powhatan. It was at this moment
that Pocahontas executed great bravery as she rushed to Smith and put her head on top of his to
prevent the oncoming slaying. (Stebbins) With this action, the life of John Smith was spared and he
was granted to be part of the tribe and was free to leave in peace. Following this, Pocahontas
befriended John Smith and the colonists. She helped with the colony of Jamestown and visited
frequently with gifts sent from her father to the colonists (Stebbins). For most of

John Smith Pocahontas Facts
Famous for saving the life of John Smith, Pocahontas is a legend (Morenus). The real question is
"Who was Pocahontas and was she real or just a legend for kids?" Most people have heard of
Pocahontas, who was primarily linked to the English colonist through Captain John Smith
(Biography). Pocahontas, whose real name was Matoaka, was a native American who became
famous for helping English colonists new to America ("Pocahontas Facts"). Matoaka, the beautiful
and lively daughter of Powhatan (Morenus), ruler of the land that the English named Virginia, is a
name most people question because they are not familiar with it, using the nickname "Pocahontas"
instead. "Pocahontas" translates into many different things including "the playful one" or "little

and also the leader of the Indian tribes. As Smith tells it, he was brought in front of Chief Powhatan

Exploration Of The New World
Exploration of the New World (Americas) became very popular around the 1500's and beyond. The
Spanish were the first of the Old World to find the New World and colonize, and they did so on an
Island known as Hispaniola. Of course, this inspired other countries in Europe to do the same,
leading up to the English explorers who colonized in Jamestown. Surprisingly, even though these
two colonies were settled a little over 100 years apart from each other, they have many similarities
and differences.
Firstly, both the Spanish and English explorers main goal were to get rich quick, which also tied in
to how their economies worked. The way they did this, however, was different. The Spanish traded
many resources with the Indians, and in return ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, on terms of resources, the Spanish had much more than the English. The English mooched
off of the Indians because their ways of collectivism (when all the colonists worked and received the
same amount of resources) weren't working according to plan. Not every colonist worked as hard as
the other, or even worked, and would still receive the same amount of food. This led to many
arguments. Also, they didn't have many resources of water since they were only by the ocean, which
was saltwater, and they found this made you very sick. This all changed under the rule of Governor
Sir Thomas Dale. Everyone got their own land under Governor Dale, and were forced to grow their
own food if they wanted to survive. This is when John Rolfe had created a new strain of tobacco that
could flourish on Virginia's land, eventually making some of the English settlers of the New World
rich.
Characteristics between the settlers in both colonies were different. The Spanish explorers settlers
were all males who wanted to explore, get rich, and work hard to get rich they didn't let anything
stop them in doing so, even if it meant being violent. The English explorers, however, were already
members of the upper class, so of course they wanted to get rich but they did not want to work hard
at it, so

Not All Textbooks Recall the Events of History the Same Essay
Many people do not care for history due to the simple fact some of the readings in the textbook are
not all interesting or true. Not every textbook is the same, not every textbook has accurate
information, but most history classes require you to read and learn everything from the textbooks.
As you read this essay, you will learn how a couple of different texts discusses the finding of
Virginia and about the Indians. Each of these texts are not written in the year so there will be some
discussion on the years each was written. Just remember, not all textbooks are the same, in fact,
most of them have different facts that may not be all accurate.

In May, the establishment of Jamestown was founded. The men relied on the Indians for food. The
settlement suffered from the "starving period" without Powhatan's help. The settlers held
Pocahontas, Powhatan's daughter, hostage to gain the upper hand in 1613. While they held her
captive, she agreed to convert to Christianity and marry John Rolfe. (Norton)
In the first text, he talks about how the Indians pretty much saved the colonist from death because
they supplied the colonist with goods need for their first winter. They were then attacked in 1622 by
the colonist for the land to declare the government. (Muzzey) Bailey doesn't give praise to the
Indian's like Muzzey did for saving the colonist. He discusses how the settlers find the new land and
push the Indians aside. The Spaniards were not as successful as the English settlers at killing off the
Indians. Many Indians died from the Indian Massacre, diseases, and starvation. Due to Pocahontas
marrying John Rolfe in 1613, the colonist started peace with the Indians. (Bailey) For the third text,
the author was a little more specific with the Indian tribe name. The tribe was the Tsenacomoco, and
their weroance was Powhatan. Powhatan brother watched the colonist try to expand and convert
Indians to Christianity. The war leader set up attacks all along the James River leading to 347
colonist dead on March 22, 1622. (Norton)

Disney’s Pocahontas: Selling Lies as the Truth Essay
"Instead of progress in depicting Native Americans, this film takes a step backwards – a very
dangerous step because it is so carefully glossed as 'authentic' and 'respectful.' " – Jacquelyn
Kilpatrick
[1] Disney's first attempt to relay the Pocahontas story was filled with blatant falsities. The
producers, who claimed to eradicate politically incorrect statements found in past films with the
highly anticipated 1995 Pocahontas, found themselves at the center of criticisms from many vocal
activist groups. Feminists, Native Americans, and religiously based Christian groups found the
movie to completely overlook the true essence and spirit of the Powhatan Indian princess. In an
attempt to curb many of its criticisms and appease ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This depiction of Pocahontas immediately causes the audience to view her as a fairytale character
rather than a historically prominent figure. Feminists argue that if the story were about a fictional
heroine as found in all previous Disney films, there would be less concern. However, Pocahontas
was a "real woman who lived during a pivotal time of first contact" (Kilpatrick 2). The movie
encourages children to perform similar "Wonder–woman"–like feats, rather than being a strong and
realistic woman in today's world (Rosenzweig).
[3] One of the most significant discrepancies in the movie for the feminists was the Barbie–like
figure given to Pocahontas. Not only is her chest size capable of toppling her over, but the remainder
of her physical dimensions are also completely impractical. The supervising animator of the film,
Glen Keane, worked hard hours in the studio envisioning "an animated beauty–formula for a sexy,
muscular model. The Pocahontas of the 90's makes Cinderella pale in comparison" (Rosenzweig 1).
Feminists argue that Pocahontas should have been depicted as she really appeared in the seventeenth
century. Since her death in 1617, a vast number of different images of her figure have been created
(see the "potpourri"). Yet Disney's representation is definitely the least accurate of them all.
Pocahontas certainly did not seductively slither across the Virginia forest in a tight buckskin

Disney's Pocahontas is a great movie, but is it historically correct? Well the answer is both yes and

Let's talk about Disney first and foremost. In the Disney movie she is portrayed as a beautiful,

Capturing Pocahontas could give him the leverage he needed to change that. Argall met with

people. Ultimately, the Patawomeck decided to cooperate with Argall; they could tell Powhatan they

Captain Argall 's English ship. Iopassus ' wife then pretended to want to go aboard, a request her

Pocahontas was taken to the gunner 's room to spend the night. In the morning, when the three

Powhatan Indians And The Powhatan Tribe
Before the arrivals of the Europeans, the Powhatan Indians were a tribe that lived on the coastal
parts of Virginia. Their native language was Algonquian, which was used by various tribes along the
east coast. The Powhatan tribe had an interesting culture compared to the Europeans. They were a
powerful tribe at the time and had control most areas of what is now today Virginia. They were
called the Powhatan Confederacy which was a league with over 30 Algonquian speaking tribes. It
took one man named Powhatan, as known as Wahunsonacock, to build the most powerful tribes in
Eastern America.
Wahunsonacock, Powhatan, was born in 1547 at a Algonquian Powhatan Village near the James
River. His parents were Great Powhatan Nemattanon Don Luis DeVelasco Japasaw and
PauPauwiske Morning Scent Flower Mangopeesoman. The Powhatan Tribe were a matrilineal
society, so his mother gave him the right to be chief. The name of the Powhatan Tribe was
established when the tradition of crowning a chief as a king, Chief Powhatan being the first. When
he became chief, he ruled six tribes, he used these alliances to go to war with other tribes, expanding
his rule to 30 tribes. He then became the founder of the Powhatan Confederacy, which was
established in 1580.

Analysis Of The Movie ' The New World '
Terrence Malick out did himself once again in the the film, 'The New World'. Unlike most of his
other films, 'The New World' is a combination of a little bit of drama, history, biography and of
course romance. The movie was slow and long as it was also unpredictable and poetic.
It all started in 1607, with the arrival of 3 ships in a small town, Jamestown in Virginia. A town that
is nearby where the native Americans live. One of the ships holds a prisoner(Captain Smith) that is
sentenced to death by hanging, but is now pardoned at the moment of his death by a superior
captain. Later, Captain Smith is captured again, but this time by the native Americans and is
interrogated soon before the Chief of the native Americans decided to execute him. At the moment
of his death, one of the Chief's many children threw herself in front of Captain smith and begged her
father to spare his life. Again, he is pardoned. He lives with the native Americans for a while until
the chief decides to let him go back to Jamestown on the condition that they leave by spring. In that
time that he spent with the Native Americans, he had learned most of their ways and even
befriended some people. He also fell in love with the teenage daughter of the chief that saved his
life. So much had happened in Jamestown while he was away. As he arrives, he was voted to govern
them again and come winter, so many people died from starvation until the Chief's daughter comes

Pocahontas was twelve years old when history was changed by the arrival of three English ships to
the new world. The Englishmen on the ships came to start a new colony. The new colony was

John Smith canoed up a river one day. He was going to an Indian village to attack them. The Indians
captured him and sent a message to the chief of all the little villages, Powhatan, Pocahontas' father,
telling him they were going to bring an Englishmen the next day. Pocahontas was excited because

Powhatan sent the Englishmen but not their weapons. So the English kept Pocahontas.
While Pocahontas was in Jamestown she learned the English language and became baptized as an

and fell in love instantly. Pocahontas fell in love with him too and they became more in love as they

between the English and the Indians.
In 1615 more happiness came to Pocahontas and John Rolfe. Pocahontas had a son. They named

Film Analysis Pocahontas Essay
Film Analysis: Pocahontas
The animated Walt Disney movie Pocahontas is based on a true life story of a young Powhatan
Indian girl named Pocahontas who falls in love with John Smith. In the making of the movie, Walt
Disney, attempts to relate to the early 17th Century historic event of Europeans settling in
Jamestown; however, Disney did not portrait the true story. Disney rewrote the story by making it a
beautifully romantic and animated love story like a Cinderella fairytale.
In the Walt Disney movie, Pocahontas and John Smith were both young adults when they first met.
Pocahontas was very alethic, and wore a one–strapped leather short dress and she had a tattoo on her
arm. John Smith was a tall, handsome, clean shaved man that wore ... Show more content on

He started scouting around and began drawing maps immediately. He met Pocahontas by almost
shooting her by a water fall, and later they fell in love. He was captured later in the movie while
venturing out alone at night to meet Pocahontas. John Smith was going to be executed on top of a
rock at dawn, in front of an army of colonists who planned to rescue him. In reality, John smith was
arrested and chained in irons during the voyage over, and he was released a month after arriving to
Jamestown, Virginia. After he was set free, he did a lot of exploring and trading with the Indians.
John Smith mapped most of the Jamestown area. He was eventually captured while seeking food
along the Chickahominy River. John Smith was brought to Chief Powhatan and was sentenced to be
executed. This is when he actually met Matoaka, the real name of Pocahontas, and she rescued him
from execution. Matoake was the oldest daughter of Chief Powhatan. John Smith became good
friends with Matoake, and eventually Chief Powhatan adopted Smith as his son. (Squidoo, Inc.,

According to history, despite the fact that Pocahontas is most famous for saving the life of John
Smith, she never marries him. Smith returns to find the situation at the fort desperate. They are
running out of food and only 38 of the original 105 Colonists are alive. Smith was accused of
causing the deaths of his men. He was overthrown from his position and almost condemned to hang.

Pocahontas, By Paula Gunn Allen And John Smith 's The...
Have you ever wondered why interpretations and perceptions of things change over time? It is
because everyone has their own opinion and outlook on things, especially when it comes to the
interpretation and perception of people and stories. While some of the opinions may be similar to
one another, many of them are different. Upon reading Paula Gunn Allen's "Pocahontas, To Her
English Husband John Rolfe" and John Smith's "The Generall Historie of Virginia", The reader
already had a perception of Pocahontas as it relates to how she looks, where she came from and her
personality. After reading both of the works by Paula Gunn Allen and John Smith, although the
physical similarities of Pocahontas are evident, within the texts there are differences as it relates to
the representation of Pocahontas. Allen revises Smiths representation of Pocahontas through
personality, romance and point of view.
In Paula Gunn Allen's "Pocahontas to her English Husband John Rolfe", the representation of
Pocahontas that is being portrayed is that of a strong Native American woman. She is tired of her
husband being unappreciative of the things that she does for him out of love. It makes the reader
question if she really loved Rolfe from the way that she speaks to him like he her child and not her
husband. This can be seen in the first few lines of the poem when she states "Had I not cradled you
in my arms, / oh beloved perfidious one, / you would have died" (Allen 1–3). When analyzed and
interpreted,

Pocahontas And Real Life
Many people believe the 1995 film, Pocahontas, to be the true story of a young Powhatan woman.
However, the story lacks facts. Pocahontas isn't even her real name. Matoaka, the real Pocahontas,
faced mush more misery than the movie showed. Mataoka's life in America, life in England, a
comparison between the movie and real life, and how fictional portrayals of real people effect
society today will show you that Disney's inaccuracies could change history. In her early life,
Matoaka was a Powhatan Indian. She was born around 1595. 12 years later, John Smith arrived on
the shore of present day Virginia. He would help create Jamestown. This settlement was very close
to the Powhatan tribe. In 1616, John Smith wrote a letter to Queen Anne stating ... Show more

Sophie Gilbert says that the "environmentalist message" was powerful and unique. The facts, sadly,
are not so positive. The movie would have still been great, even if names where changed, but would
it still have appeal? Many people, children and adults alike, grow up thinking that they know the
story of Pocahontas. A Powhatan Chief, Roy Crazy Horse, stated "It is unfortunate that this sad
story, which Euro–Americans should find embarrassing, Disney makes 'entertainment' and
perpetuates a dishonest and self–serving myth at the expense of the Powhatan Nation", although
creators of the movie may have thought that it would be harmless, people could still find offense to
Pocahontas. James Allen, who knew the history of Matoaka, decided that "turning a story like that
into something fluffy and "empowering" is just uncomfortable" and if the real history was ever
made known among the public, people would most likely agree. The history of the real Pocahontas
is unsettling. So, wouldn't it have been better if the movie hadn't been made? In the future, fiction
will merge with fact. Despite the Pocahontas being revolutionary, providing a new and unique
message, the story of Mataoka should not be warped. Mataoka's early life, life in England, a
comparison of the movie and real life, and how the movie effects real people all show that although
Pocahontas was a great movie, it also made a sad time in history seem

The Two Identities of an American Icon
Early America was founded on the ideas of the early English colonies combined with the beliefs of
the indigenous people. Conflicts between native tribes and Europeans characterized the colonial
period and significantly impacted both the natives and the Europeans. Political strife, in addition to
economic and territorial tensions, was commonplace among the indigenous and the colonists.
Pocahontas, the princess of the local Powhatan tribe, played a pivotal role in this early contact
between European and Indigenous American cultures. She often fostered peace between the English
colonists and the Powhatans by befriending the colonists and eventually marrying one of them. As a
result of her position as an emissary and sort of "mediator" between the two groups and her
marriage, Pocahontas began to assimilate herself to European beliefs and ideologies by converting
to Christianity. The changes that occurred as a result of Pocahontas' marriage to John Rolfe and her
conversion to Christianity led to profound cultural tensions and an ambiguous juxtaposition between
her identities as a Powhatan Princess versus the Christian wife of John Rolfe.
Established on May 14, 1607, the colony of Jamestown, located near present–day Williamsburg,
Virginia, was the first permanent English settlement in North America. In contrast, the Powhatan
Empire led by Pocahontas' father, Chief

Pocahontas would be brought back into the picture after the English kidnapped her. She converted to
Christianity and married John Rolfe, bringing peace between the two sides. Pocahontas would then
be brought to England as an example of a "Savage" being turn to Christianity. After she dies, the
peace between the Natives and the settlers slowly diminishes. In March 22, 1622, the Natives would
attack the English, killing around 400 settlers. This attack backfires on the Native since the English
would attack back more drastically. To end the book, Price talks about John Smiths life after
Jamestown and his opinion on the settlement. The story also addresses the beginning of Slaves entry
in America, which would be an important part in the history of America. This book overall informs
us of early America history.
This novel gives a vivid glimpse of life in early Jamestown. Through this book, we get the
perspectives of not only people living in that time period but of actual settlers in Jamestown. Many
of John Smith's work is incorporated in this novel as well. Throughout this novel, we begin to
question, how did a settlement that consisted majority of gentlemen become the first English
permanent settlement? Through seventeenth–century English documents and first–hand reports,
Price answers the question by showing the importance of John Smith and Pocahontas.

This book begins by describing all of the many different events that are occurring around the world
during the year 1606, such as the opening of the play Macbeth and Galileo Galilei publishing a book
of the observations of supernova in the sky. During the same year, in late December, three small
ships were anchored in London's River Thames waiting to depart to a new settlement. The three
ships were the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. The Virginia Company of London
organized and financed the voyage to begin the new settlement of Jamestown. The crew is very
excited to search for gold, silver, and other riches that have supposedly been found in North
America. Their previous knowledge of the Spanish enrichment of gold and silver created a group
dominated by money hungry, wealthy gentlemen. Aboard the ships were a great deal of gentlemen,
but unfortunately lacked in soldiers and working men. The majority of the men were not accustomed
to any type of hard labor, and this caused many problems because the conditions the crew were in
clearly called for difficult laborious work. One of the few commoners on board was John Smith, a
former soldier who proved to be a key leader to the survival of the colony. Although he was looked
down upon by the upper class, he was a hard worker, and also very intelligent and a jack of all
trades. When the crew arrived to their destination, they were provided with a papers from the

I'd like to thank you for being here today, Rebecca.
Pocahontas: Hello, Faith, I'm very happy to have come.
Faith: You are commonly known as a beautiful Native American princess, but I think our listeners
want to learn more about your background. Would you please tell us?
Pocahontas: Absolutely! I was born in 1595, in the Powhatan nation, in the village of
Werowocomoco; today, this area is Virginia. My father was the Powhatan, or chief, and my mother
was one of his many wives. You see, whoever was the Powhatan would marry a woman, but once
their first child was born, the wife's royal status dropped, and he would go on to marry different
women. Until I was a toddler, my mother took care of me, but I later went to live with my father and
half–siblings. At birth, I was also given a special name that only my closest family members would
know: Matoaka, which means "Little Snow Feather," but my public name was "Pocahontas."
Faith: How did your people react when the Englishmen came in 1607 to start the settlement of
Jamestown?
Pocahontas: I was twelve when this was happening, and we were all very curious, yet untrusting and
even fearful of the strange men with light skin and metal clothes. We didn't exactly know why they
had come, how long they were staying, or if

In the winter of 1608, the English traded with the Powhatan tribes for more food, but found out that
a drought had severely reduced the tribe's harvest. As the Settlers demanded more and more food,
Chief Powhatan finally came to a compromise with Smith that if he gave him swords, guns, and
some metals he would give him a boatful of corn. Unfortunately, Smith did not hold up his end of
the deal and consequently, Pocahontas and her family planned to kill him. Pocahontas that night
though warned Smith of what her father planned to do than disappeared into the woods never to be
heard of from him. Naturally, after that experience the relationship between the english and the
Powhatan tribe began to dissolve and in the fall of 1609 Smith returned to England for medical care
and was rumored to the indians that he died on his way over to England. As Pocahontas got older,
she married Kocoum, who was someone with no high status or importance so was probably married

John Rolfe 's Letter From The Settlement Era

John Rolfe's marriage
This primary source, John Rolfe's Letter to Thomas Dale about marrying Pocahontas, is from the
settlement era and was written in 1614. The European settlers in this era, early 1700s, wanted land
and to displace the natives not intermarrying with them. Most settlers remained separate from the
Indian society. Some settlers married Native women as a way to gain access to the native societies.
It was a way to gain an economic relationship. Indians were being forced off their land because they
had no real claim of it. Settlers would establish their towns on sites previously cleared by the
Indians. The marriage of John Rolfe and Pocahontas was a rare and unique circumstance in the
1700s. The letter to Thomas Dale is a window to a period of uncertainty between the white settlers
and the Native Indians in North America. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of
this letter and its effects to the society in the time period after it was written. John Rolfe's decision to
marry Pocahontas proved to be vital at the time. John Rolfe's letter to Thomas Dale for approval on
marrying the Indian Princess Pocahontas reflects on how much society in the early 1610s depended
on such thing as intermarriage between a white man and an Indian woman to help keep peace
between the white settlers and Native Indians in North America.

Exploring The Life Of Pocahontas
In this paper I hope to explore the life of Pocahontas. Pocahontas is quite famous in elementary
school classrooms. This is because her story fits within the larger story of the colonization of
America. Also, her love affair with John Smith made a good Disney movie. How much of what I
know about her life comes from Hollywood, and how much of what I know about her life comes
from reality? I will examine an academic database source to find out. Pocahontas was born in 1596
to Indian chief Powhatan around the Jamestown, Virginia colony. Christopher Clausen, of American
Scholar academic journal says in his piece titled, "the familiar story of Pocahontas was mirrored by
that of a young Englishman given as a hostage to her father" about ... Show more content on

Smith said, "At the minute of my execution, she hazarded the beating out of her own brains to save
mine; and not only that, but she so prevailed with her father, that I was safely conducted to
Jamestown; where I found about eight and thirty miserable, poor, and sick creatures, to keep
possession of all those large territories of Virginia". Pocahontas would have been 11 at the time of
her intervention. These words have often been doubted by experts, but have generally been
accepted. If this is true, then Pocahontas displayed an awesome amount of selflessness, bravery, and
initiative that was far beyond her time. These are commonly known events. What is usually untold
about Pocahontas is what comes next. A few years later Powhatan sent his daughter to Jamestown as
a gift of goodwill. With this gift, relations improved drastically between the settlers and the Native
Americans. Apparently, Pocahontas was fascinated with the English people. Pocahontas may have
regarded John Smith as sort of a father figure. She also functioned as a key bridge between the
colonists and the Indians, so that the colonists could have aid in times of starvation. Smith never
married anyone, and received serious gun shot wounds in 1609. He went back to England and died
five years later. The colony of Jamestown fell into disarray and Pocahontas returned to her father.

Essay on Pocahontas: A Great American Myth
Pocahontas: A Great American Myth
John Smith's tales of the Indian princess, Pocahontas, have, over time, encouraged the evolution of a
great American myth. According to this myth, which is common knowledge to most Americans,
Pocahontas saved Smith from being killed by her father and his warriors and then fell in love with
John Smith. Some versions of the myth popular among Americans include the marriage of Smith
and Pocahontas. Although no one can be sure of exactly what happened almost four–hundred years
ago, most historians agree that the myth is incorrect. Pocahontas did not save John Smith's life from
"savages" and never showed any affection for him. The events of her life differ greatly from the
myth Americans have created. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Apparently, Smith's ego prevents his General History from being a reliable source. This leads
historians to question whether his captivity occurred at all. His egocentricity may be seen in the
following passage from his General History:
Captain Smith, who, by his own example, good words, and fair promises, set some to mow, others to
bind thatch, some to build houses, others to thatch them, himself always bearing the greatest task for
his own share, so that in sort time he provided most of them lodgings, neglecting any for himself
(106).
If this quote had been written by one of Smith's fellow settlers, we may regard it as substantial
evidence. However, it was written by Smith, so he seems to be boasting about his selflessness and
leadership ability. Furthermore, according to Egloff and Chief Crazy Horse, Smith did not even
mention his attempted murder to his fellow settlers when he returned to the fort after the Indians
released him. Furthermore, he did not include the incident in an account of his captivity, which he
wrote immediately following his period of captivity (Vincent 1; Chief Crazy Horse 1). Thus, Smith's
General History is not reliable.
According to Chief Crazy Horse, Egloff, and most modern historians, following the alleged attempt
on his life, Pocahontas did not fall in love with John Smith. Contrary to common belief, Pocahontas
married the Indian Kocoum in 1610.

Essay about American History: Pocahontas
In sixteenth century, a lot of Indians migrated to states all over America. There were many wars
between Indians and white men at that time. A prominent figure who was among representative of
the Indians brought friendly relations with white settlers was Pocahontas. She was Powhatan Indian
woman who befriended the settlers and married John Rolfe, the Jamestown settler, Virginia. In my
opinion, Pocahontas was a compassionate little girl, a peaceful ambassador and a typical Christian
Indian woman.

In this circumstance, Pocahontas was also known as a heroine. She broke the rule of her father when
she saved and became friends with the colonist. She was not fearful while they were able to take
advantage of her anytime. Otherwise, they could set a trap so that Pocahontas fell into it. She was
really calm and enthusiastic; she did not think about complicated affairs which might fare badly. I
admired her to be brave woman, but she'd better have a think before her decision. Because helping
people is meaningful, sometimes it is made to betray us. So I always consider before helping
someone if I do not know who they are. Eventually, Pocahontas was kind–hearted, tolerant and
open–minded Indian woman. She deserved a heroine that everyone ought to follow.
At that time, Pocahontas also symbolize a piece of peace, she blew fresh atmosphere into oppressive

her to negotiate a permanent peace with her father. During her captivity, Pocahontas met the colonist

How Did Disney Perpetuate The Reality Of Disney's Story?
Despite the popular stereotype that Disney helped perpetuate, the reality of the situation is,
Pocahontas's story had far less to do with romance and talking animals and far more to do with
courage. Disney's depiction is filled to the brim with historical inaccuracies– in fact, her real name
wasn't even Pocahontas.
It was Amonute, or privately, Matoaka.
Born around 1595, "Pocahontas" was the daughter of Chief Powhatan, and his favorite one at that.
Dubbed "the playful one", she certainly lived up to that name by interacting with people with
Jamestown, a town founded by English colonists. Little did she know, but by communicating with
the settlers, she may have smoothed out rough patches in the relationship between her people and
colonists.

John Adams Biography Essay
Pocahontas was born around 1595 to a Powhatan who was the leader of 30 Algonquian speaking
groups and kingdoms in Tidewater Virginia, which is also known as Tsenacommacah. At a very
young age, Pocahontas learned the way of life by learning how to seek for food and fire as well as
constructing thatched houses.
Pocahontas was mainly known for saving the life of John Smith. John Smith and his men arrived in
Virginia and ran into the Tsenacommacah Indians many times. In 1607, a Native American hunting
party captured Smith and took him back to Powhatan's home. In Smith's journal, he stated that
Pocahontas was doing everything in her power to stop the execution and even almost sacrificed her
own life to save Smith. By committing such a brave and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John Adams was born to father, John Adams Sr. and mother, Susanna Boylston. John's father was
not only a farmer but also a Congregationalist deacon and was very involved with the town council.
John's mother was born to an outstanding family in Massachusetts, the Boylstons of Brookline.
Adams became very successful early in his life as he received a scholarship to Harvard University
and studied law after graduating in 1755. Adams was well known for his clash against the Stamp Act
of 1765 and disagreed that the Stamp Act took away the American colonists' rights to be taxed by
consent as well as tried in front of a jury. Later on in his career, Adams was asked to represent on
behalf of the British soldiers that were on trial for killing the innocent lives of five people. This
event was known as the popular Boston Massacre. In 1744, Adams was voted into the
Massachusetts Assembly and he also became one of the five people to actually serve at the First
Continental Congress. Adams was very opened about his ideas and proposed anything that he felt
was necessary for the good of our nation thus Congress authorized his resolution to the proposal that
each colony should adopt their own governments instead of having just one big government that was
in charge of all them. John Adams was also a major contributor to the development of the
Declaration of Independence along with Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R.
Livingston and Roger

Compare And Contrast Pocahontas And The Powhatan Dilemma

  • 1. Compare And Contrast Pocahontas And The Powhatan Dilemma Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma Professor Foust Daisy Aguilar It is said that there are many different versions to a story. There is one persons story, then there is an other person's story, and then, there is the truth. "Our memories change each time they are recalled. What we recall is only a facsimile of things gone by." Dobrin, Arthur. "Your Memory Isn't What You Think It Is." (online magazine). Psychology Today. July 16, 2013. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/am–i–right/201307/your–memory–isnt–what–you–think–it– is. Every time a story is told, it changes. Townsend examines the following months on the settling of the English, as well as Pocahontas's kidnapping, to her imprisonment, down to her marriage to John Rolfe, her conversion to Christianity, and finally her death. A major contrast between the Disney Stories and movie of Pocahontus, was that they had failed to mention her kidnapping. Pocahontas' kidnapping was unjust and surprising as it was by the community of the man who would be her husband and later the father to her child, although Pocahontas had already been married since the age of twelve or thirteen to a man named Kocoom. Pocahontas' early marriage was then ended when her warrior Kocoom had then disappeared, for reasons unknown. After this disappearance, Pocahontas later then married to John Rolfe as she had the choice to choose any man she wanted without the fear of being judged and called cold for her remarriage. Another major difference between Disneys portrayal of Pocahontas and Townsend's portrayal of Pocahontas is her decision to be baptized. Although it would have been seen as a betrayal to her tribe, Pocahontas chose to be baptized, with the consent of her father. Even though it was well known to Powhatan (Pocahontas' father), that with his consent of Pocahontas' baptism (now Rebecca), he would lose not his people's respect, but as well as their trust, he ... Pocahontas became a prominent figure in the colonization process of the new world due to her civil interactions with English settlers, specifically John Smith and John Rolfe. When most people think of Pocahontas, John Smith comes to mind as well. John Smith first met Pocahontas when she was estimated to be ten or eleven years old. He, at this time period, was about twenty eight years of age. That being said, there is no evidence of any sort of romantic interaction between the two. Although the romantic factor between them is often thought of due to their portrayal in movies and other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pocahontas first met John Rolfe while staying in a Virginian settlement known as, Henricus. At this time period, the idea of intermarriage of Native Americans and English colonists was still fairly new. That being said, John Rolfe had to pledge his proposal of marriage for Pocahontas to the governor of Virginia. In this long letter to the governor, he discussed his undeniable love for Pocahontas. He also claimed that by marrying her, he would be "saving her soul." Despite the fact that Rolfe's romantic feelings toward Pocahontas are quite noticeable, her feelings towards him are never actually mentioned. However, their wedding took place on April 5, 1614. After they became married, they lived on a plantation in Virginia for a couple of years where their son, Thomas, was born. The marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe was one of the most significant events that related to the interactions between the Native Americans and the colonists. It created feelings of peace and tranquility between the two vastly different groups of people. It also helped establish trade and commerce among them. Before the wedding occurred, the first Anglo–Powhatan War was in process, and the marriage helped put an end to the fighting. Furthermore, the marriage to Rolfe converted Pocahontas to the religion of Christianity. This act of conversion was immensely important to officials back in England because it accomplished one of their primary goals of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Disney Vs. Reality : Disney Versus Reality Disney versus Reality When one says the name Pocahontas, the most likely image that comes to mind is of that one Disney created nearly twenty years ago. Tall, super model body with long ebony hair worthy of a L'Oreal commercial, in a short cocktail dress with a typical Native American theme to it. She is eighteen and just met John Smith; a twenty one year old Englishman with golden hair and a body of a Greek god. At least, that is what Disney's version of Pocahontas had happen, and if he were around at the time, John Smith would wholeheartedly agree. The truth could not be any further in the opposite direction of what the directors of Disney's Pocahontas had in mind when they first concepted the future film that would trick the minds of many children across the United States. To Pocahontas' and Smith's age, appearance, and personality, to the events leading up to their first meeting and what happened afterwards, Disney took their own liberties with it and went for it. Pocahontas is a pretty name, almost rolls off the tongue. It's a shame however, that that is not her real name. Her actual name is really Matoaka, while Pocahontas was just a nickname for the young daughter of Chief Powhatan, meaning the naughty one or spoiled child, which can lead to some negative perceptions of Matoaka (Kelso). Her name is not the only misconception that Disney emphasis, like her age for example. The animated film depicts her at the age of eighteen, but in actuality she was twelve at the ... This unborn child would become a huge part of colony history between the Indians and the English; this child was to be recognized in history by many different names the most famous name would be Pocahontas. The book I read was about Pocahontas by Grace Steele Woodward. This book covers many different subjects in Pocahontas's life. The book begins with a background of The Powhatans, Pocahontas's people. She was not just a little Indian girl but the daughter of a very powerful chief. Pocahontas was still very young when the first settles land at Jamestown. When she starting visiting the colony there were only about 100 Englishmen, the Anglican chaplain, and the twelve labors. Pocahontas was mostly intrigue with Captain John Smith. Smith was a dashing young 26–year–old. Captain Newport arrested Smith on route to Jamestown for inciting mutiny among some of the crewmen on the ship Susan Constant. Smith was released after landing at Jamestown but Smith could not take the oath of allegiance to King James or sit with the council until June 10, when he was cleared of all charges. (Woodward, 55) John Smith, to Pocahontas, was the most approachable of all the English colonists. He took the initiative to learn the Powhatan language and try to communicate between the Indians and the colonists. Smith also knew that the Indians could help the colonists in their time of need. • 9. The Film Analysis Of The Movie Poahontas In the infamous movie Pocahontas(1995), the Disney franchise has a way of covering the truth behind the real story and person of Pocahontas by creating fictional animals, an untrue love story, and an unrealistic ending in order to gain children's interest. The movie starts with John Smith and European settlers coming to the New World in order to gain land and resources, which includes getting rid of the Native Americans that are already occupying the Virginia land, people that they pronounce as savages. Pocahontas is dealing with her father, the chief of the tribe, trying to get her to marry an important member of the tribe in order to gain her more respect and get her a role and title in the community. Afterward, Pocahontas and John finally meet and begin a romance even though both of their groups are vigorously trying to remove the other from the land. Near the end, Pocahontas protects John from being executed, however he eventually is shot by one of his own and is on his way back to England as his only means of surviving. The movie ends with John leaving and Pocahontas and her tribe contributing food to the European Settlers as they begin their journey back to England. The first scenes of the movie I would consider the director's interpretation of history to be unbiased and moderately accurate, it shows the European Settlers making their way to Virginia in hopes of gathering gold and other valuable resources, while discussing the possibility of encountering Indians ... • 11. The Movie Pocahontas Was Released By Disney Essay The movie Pocahontas was released by Disney in 1995, and its sequel Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World three years later. Together the movies depict, to a certain extent, the story of Native American "princess", Pocahontas. I will watch both movies in their entirety, paying close attention to detail, and take note of how exactly the story is portrayed. Afterwards, I will research as much as I can about Pocahontas and compare it to what is presented in the Disney film. I will then asses why I think, exactly, the filmmakers left out or changed what they did. Due to the fact that I am dealing with a story that involves English colonization, a situation that I know for a fact involved genocide and oppression of the natives, I suspect that most of my findings will lead me to believe that Disney changed the story in a way that makes it as innocent as possible. There are a few historical inaccuracies in the movie that I am already aware of and plan on questioning. Why doesn't the movie show more death? Why is her age not accurate in the movie? Why is Pocahontas portrayed as an only child instead of a sibling of 19 other children? I will search the databases EBSCOhost and JStor with the following key words: Pocahontas, John Smith, Jamestown, and Powhatan .... And comb through the results to find which articles offer the most insightful perspectives. Rasmussen, William M.S., and Robert S. Tilton. "Pocahontas." American History 30.3 (1995): 40. Pocahontas: Medicine Woman Pocahontas: Medicine Woman, Spy, Entrepreneur, Diplomat Paula Gunn Allen Jessica Silva Perez History 1301 Monday and Wednesday 8:35am to 10:00am Due by November 21, 2016 The book "Pocahontas: Medicine woman, spy, entrepreneur, diplomat" was written to explain how Pocahontas was important in American history; and to explain the roles she played in our history. Paula Gunn Allen purpose of writing this book was to explain Pocahontas Life, she also states that although there are many stories about Pocahontas it is difficult to know if they are facts or not. Allen also states that her goal writing this book was to bring to life Pocahontas culture and how she played many roles in society. Pocahontas united two worlds The Powhatan with the English; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Allen argues that, by emphasizing an ideal romance, attention is taken away from the true economic motive of Smith and the colonists: attaining wealth, prosperity and progress at any cost. The mythological romance between John Smith and Pocahontas lends a "mystique to those original corporate executives" where it otherwise would not exist. George Orwell once wrote, "Who controls the past controls the future." I applaud Allen for challenging the traditional narrative about this historical figure and for giving readers a chance to look at human relations with the environment in our present and our future. I would recommend this book because it tells you Pocahontas's story in way that is easy to understand, and challenges what historians believe about her. WORKS CITED PAGE Allen, Paula Gunn. • 15. Pocahontas's Effect On The People Of Jamestown Did you know that Pocahontas isn't just a Disney character? Pocahontas was born around 1595 in what is now North America, but no one knows exactly when she was born. She was the favorite daughter of Chief Powhatan's, but her mother is unknown. She helped many people, including the people of Jamestown. John Smith and John Rolfe, citizens of Jamestown, affected Pocahontas' life greatly. Pocahontas helped the people of Jamestown survive through their first winter; she brought them food and told them when the Native Americans were going to attack. Throughout most of her life, Pocahontas lived in Tsenacommacah. She learned to do the many things most young ladies did, such as foraging for food and firewood, farm, and build thatched houses. Pocahontas was known by more than one name. Matoaka and Amonute were two of her names. Pocahontas was her casual name, meaning 'playful one'. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 17. Pocahontas: The Name Of Powhatan Indians Well my one thousand word essay is over Pocahontas. I guess I should start from the beginning as we all must do in this situation. She was believed to be born by historians around the 1596 in Cloucester County, Virginia; but the exact date was unknown. Pocahontas had many names, it was a very normal thing for Powhatan Indians (the tribe that she was from) to have several different names. The different names had different meanings for different times and different situations. Native Americans were often given secret names that a select few knew about. Pocahontas's secret name was "Matoaka" which means in their tongue "Bright stream between the hills," but was later also known as Amonute which can not be translated. The name "Pocahontas" was ... The inscription on a 1616 engraving of her which was made for the company, reads, "MATOAKAALS REBECCA FILIA POTENTISS : PRINC: POWHATINI IMP : VIRGINI/– E." Which means," Matoaka, alias Rebecca, daughter of the most powerful prince of the Powhatan Empire of Virginia." Many of the English people believed the Powhatan to be an extremely powerful ruler of an empire and presumably appropriated Pocahontas with the title of "Princess of The Powhatan." Her life has been adapted into many different films, one of the most famous being the Disney film in 1995. As the daughter of a powerful Indian leader, Pocahontas seemed to be born for greatness. Throughout her life, Pocahontas showed courage, selflessness, bravery, and the ability to give up her own self for the better of those around her. Pocahontas was a woman that all women aspire to be like. Although she is remembered sanguinely, Pocahontas did not become the woman we know and love without trials of her own. In that month, Smith was surveying the Chickahominy River, when a hunting party captured him. The leader of this hunting party was a relative of the Powhatan Chief, and Smith was brought back to Pocahontas's home in Werowocomoco. As he was in front of him, two large stones were placed on the ground and Smith was forced to lay his head in the middle. His death would come by the smashing of his head from a club held by one of the warriors of Powhatan. It was at this moment that Pocahontas executed great bravery as she rushed to Smith and put her head on top of his to prevent the oncoming slaying. (Stebbins) With this action, the life of John Smith was spared and he was granted to be part of the tribe and was free to leave in peace. • 23. Exploration Of The New World Exploration of the New World (Americas) became very popular around the 1500's and beyond. The Spanish were the first of the Old World to find the New World and colonize, and they did so on an Island known as Hispaniola. Of course, this inspired other countries in Europe to do the same, leading up to the English explorers who colonized in Jamestown. Surprisingly, even though these two colonies were settled a little over 100 years apart from each other, they have many similarities and differences. Firstly, both the Spanish and English explorers main goal were to get rich quick, which also tied in to how their economies worked. The way they did this, however, was different. The Spanish traded many resources with the Indians, and in return ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, on terms of resources, the Spanish had much more than the English. The English mooched off of the Indians because their ways of collectivism (when all the colonists worked and received the same amount of resources) weren't working according to plan. Not every colonist worked as hard as the other, or even worked, and would still receive the same amount of food. This led to many arguments. Also, they didn't have many resources of water since they were only by the ocean, which was saltwater, and they found this made you very sick. This all changed under the rule of Governor Sir Thomas Dale. Everyone got their own land under Governor Dale, and were forced to grow their own food if they wanted to survive. This is when John Rolfe had created a new strain of tobacco that could flourish on Virginia's land, eventually making some of the English settlers of the New World rich. Characteristics between the settlers in both colonies were different. The Spanish explorers settlers were all males who wanted to explore, get rich, and work hard to get rich they didn't let anything stop them in doing so, even if it meant being violent. Not every textbook is the same, not every textbook has accurate information, but most history classes require you to read and learn everything from the textbooks. As you read this essay, you will learn how a couple of different texts discusses the finding of Virginia and about the Indians. Each of these texts are not written in the year so there will be some discussion on the years each was written. The settlers held Pocahontas, Powhatan's daughter, hostage to gain the upper hand in 1613. While they held her captive, she agreed to convert to Christianity and marry John Rolfe. (Norton) In the first text, he talks about how the Indians pretty much saved the colonist from death because they supplied the colonist with goods need for their first winter. They were then attacked in 1622 by the colonist for the land to declare the government. (Muzzey) Bailey doesn't give praise to the Indian's like Muzzey did for saving the colonist. He discusses how the settlers find the new land and push the Indians aside. The Spaniards were not as successful as the English settlers at killing off the Indians. Many Indians died from the Indian Massacre, diseases, and starvation. Due to Pocahontas marrying John Rolfe in 1613, the colonist started peace with the Indians. (Bailey) For the third text, the author was a little more specific with the Indian tribe name. The tribe was the Tsenacomoco, and their weroance was Powhatan. • 27. Disney’s Pocahontas: Selling Lies as the Truth Essay "Instead of progress in depicting Native Americans, this film takes a step backwards – a very dangerous step because it is so carefully glossed as 'authentic' and 'respectful.' " – Jacquelyn Kilpatrick [1] Disney's first attempt to relay the Pocahontas story was filled with blatant falsities. The producers, who claimed to eradicate politically incorrect statements found in past films with the highly anticipated 1995 Pocahontas, found themselves at the center of criticisms from many vocal activist groups. Feminists, Native Americans, and religiously based Christian groups found the movie to completely overlook the true essence and spirit of the Powhatan Indian princess. This depiction of Pocahontas immediately causes the audience to view her as a fairytale character rather than a historically prominent figure. Feminists argue that if the story were about a fictional heroine as found in all previous Disney films, there would be less concern. However, Pocahontas was a "real woman who lived during a pivotal time of first contact" (Kilpatrick 2). The movie encourages children to perform similar "Wonder–woman"–like feats, rather than being a strong and realistic woman in today's world (Rosenzweig). [3] One of the most significant discrepancies in the movie for the feminists was the Barbie–like figure given to Pocahontas. Not only is her chest size capable of toppling her over, but the remainder of her physical dimensions are also completely impractical. The supervising animator of the film, Glen Keane, worked hard hours in the studio envisioning "an animated beauty–formula for a sexy, muscular model. The Pocahontas of the 90's makes Cinderella pale in comparison" (Rosenzweig 1). Feminists argue that Pocahontas should have been depicted as she really appeared in the seventeenth century. Since her death in 1617, a vast number of different images of her figure have been created (see the "potpourri"). Yet Disney's representation is definitely the least accurate of them all. It is because everyone has their own opinion and outlook on things, especially when it comes to the interpretation and perception of people and stories. While some of the opinions may be similar to one another, many of them are different. Upon reading Paula Gunn Allen's "Pocahontas, To Her English Husband John Rolfe" and John Smith's "The Generall Historie of Virginia", The reader already had a perception of Pocahontas as it relates to how she looks, where she came from and her personality. After reading both of the works by Paula Gunn Allen and John Smith, although the physical similarities of Pocahontas are evident, within the texts there are differences as it relates to the representation of Pocahontas. Allen revises Smiths representation of Pocahontas through personality, romance and point of view. In Paula Gunn Allen's "Pocahontas to her English Husband John Rolfe", the representation of Pocahontas that is being portrayed is that of a strong Native American woman. She is tired of her husband being unappreciative of the things that she does for him out of love. It makes the reader question if she really loved Rolfe from the way that she speaks to him like he her child and not her husband. A Powhatan Chief, Roy Crazy Horse, stated "It is unfortunate that this sad story, which Euro–Americans should find embarrassing, Disney makes 'entertainment' and perpetuates a dishonest and self–serving myth at the expense of the Powhatan Nation", although creators of the movie may have thought that it would be harmless, people could still find offense to Pocahontas. James Allen, who knew the history of Matoaka, decided that "turning a story like that into something fluffy and "empowering" is just uncomfortable" and if the real history was ever made known among the public, people would most likely agree. The history of the real Pocahontas is unsettling. So, wouldn't it have been better if the movie hadn't been made? In the future, fiction will merge with fact. • 43. The Two Identities Of An American Icon Carolina Mallar Dr. Pagnoni Christianity: G Period 10 December 2014 The Two Identities of an American Icon Early America was founded on the ideas of the early English colonies combined with the beliefs of the indigenous people. Conflicts between native tribes and Europeans characterized the colonial period and significantly impacted both the natives and the Europeans. Political strife, in addition to economic and territorial tensions, was commonplace among the indigenous and the colonists. Pocahontas, the princess of the local Powhatan tribe, played a pivotal role in this early contact between European and Indigenous American cultures. She often fostered peace between the English colonists and the Powhatans by befriending the colonists and eventually marrying one of them. As a result of her position as an emissary and sort of "mediator" between the two groups and her marriage, Pocahontas began to assimilate herself to European beliefs and ideologies by converting to Christianity. The changes that occurred as a result of Pocahontas' marriage to John Rolfe and her conversion to Christianity led to profound cultural tensions and an ambiguous juxtaposition between her identities as a Powhatan Princess versus the Christian wife of John Rolfe. Established on May 14, 1607, the colony of Jamestown, located near present–day Williamsburg, Virginia, was the first permanent English settlement in North America. On July 24, we were within 7 days of reaching the colony when a hurricane hit the convoy and badly damaged the Sea Venture. The colonists and I worked as hard as we could to build to new ships to continue on our way. We used Bermuda cedar and as many remains as we could find from the Sea Venture. The two new ships ... This book begins by describing all of the many different events that are occurring around the world during the year 1606, such as the opening of the play Macbeth and Galileo Galilei publishing a book of the observations of supernova in the sky. During the same year, in late December, three small ships were anchored in London's River Thames waiting to depart to a new settlement. The three ships were the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. The Virginia Company of London organized and financed the voyage to begin the new settlement of Jamestown. The crew is very excited to search for gold, silver, and other riches that have supposedly been found in North America. Their previous knowledge of the Spanish enrichment of gold and silver created a group dominated by money hungry, wealthy gentlemen. Aboard the ships were a great deal of gentlemen, but unfortunately lacked in soldiers and working men. The majority of the men were not accustomed to any type of hard labor, and this caused many problems because the conditions the crew were in clearly called for difficult laborious work. One of the few commoners on board was John Smith, a former soldier who proved to be a key leader to the survival of the colony. Although he was looked down upon by the upper class, he was a hard worker, and also very intelligent and a jack of all trades. Today we have with us Rebecca Rolfe, wife of John Rolfe, or better known as Pocahontas. I'd like to thank you for being here today, Rebecca. Pocahontas: Hello, Faith, I'm very happy to have come. Faith: You are commonly known as a beautiful Native American princess, but I think our listeners want to learn more about your background. Would you please tell us? Pocahontas: Absolutely! I was born in 1595, in the Powhatan nation, in the village of Werowocomoco; today, this area is Virginia. My father was the Powhatan, or chief, and my mother was one of his many wives. You see, whoever was the Powhatan would marry a woman, but once their first child was born, the wife's royal status dropped, and he would go on to marry different women. Until I was a toddler, my mother took care of me, but I later went to live with my father and half–siblings. At birth, I was also given a special name that only my closest family members would know: Matoaka, which means "Little Snow Feather," but my public name was "Pocahontas." Faith: How did your people react when the Englishmen came in 1607 to start the settlement of Jamestown? Pocahontas: I was twelve when this was happening, and we were all very curious, yet untrusting and even fearful of the strange men with light skin and metal clothes. John Rolfe 's Letter From The Settlement Era Gibson Mundenda Prof. Simson U.S History 5 November, 2014 John Rolfe's marriage This primary source, John Rolfe's Letter to Thomas Dale about marrying Pocahontas, is from the settlement era and was written in 1614. The European settlers in this era, early 1700s, wanted land and to displace the natives not intermarrying with them. Most settlers remained separate from the Indian society. Some settlers married Native women as a way to gain access to the native societies. It was a way to gain an economic relationship. Indians were being forced off their land because they had no real claim of it. Settlers would establish their towns on sites previously cleared by the Indians. The marriage of John Rolfe and Pocahontas was a rare and unique circumstance in the 1700s. The letter to Thomas Dale is a window to a period of uncertainty between the white settlers and the Native Indians in North America. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of this letter and its effects to the society in the time period after it was written. John Rolfe's decision to marry Pocahontas proved to be vital at the time. • 61. Exploring The Life Of Pocahontas In this paper I hope to explore the life of Pocahontas. Pocahontas is quite famous in elementary school classrooms. This is because her story fits within the larger story of the colonization of America. Also, her love affair with John Smith made a good Disney movie. How much of what I know about her life comes from Hollywood, and how much of what I know about her life comes from reality? I will examine an academic database source to find out. Pocahontas was born in 1596 to Indian chief Powhatan around the Jamestown, Virginia colony. Christopher Clausen, of American Scholar academic journal says in his piece titled, "the familiar story of Pocahontas was mirrored by that of a young Englishman given as a hostage to her father" about ... Smith said, "At the minute of my execution, she hazarded the beating out of her own brains to save mine; and not only that, but she so prevailed with her father, that I was safely conducted to Jamestown; where I found about eight and thirty miserable, poor, and sick creatures, to keep possession of all those large territories of Virginia". Pocahontas would have been 11 at the time of her intervention. These words have often been doubted by experts, but have generally been accepted. If this is true, then Pocahontas displayed an awesome amount of selflessness, bravery, and initiative that was far beyond her time. These are commonly known events. What is usually untold about Pocahontas is what comes next. A few years later Powhatan sent his daughter to Jamestown as a gift of goodwill. With this gift, relations improved drastically between the settlers and the Native Americans. Apparently, Pocahontas was fascinated with the English people. Pocahontas may have regarded John Smith as sort of a father figure. She also functioned as a key bridge between the colonists and the Indians, so that the colonists could have aid in times of starvation. Smith never married anyone, and received serious gun shot wounds in 1609. He went back to England and died five years later. • 63. Essay on Pocahontas: A Great American Myth Pocahontas: A Great American Myth John Smith's tales of the Indian princess, Pocahontas, have, over time, encouraged the evolution of a great American myth. According to this myth, which is common knowledge to most Americans, Pocahontas saved Smith from being killed by her father and his warriors and then fell in love with John Smith. Some versions of the myth popular among Americans include the marriage of Smith and Pocahontas. Although no one can be sure of exactly what happened almost four–hundred years ago, most historians agree that the myth is incorrect. Pocahontas did not save John Smith's life from "savages" and never showed any affection for him. The events of her life differ greatly from the myth Americans have created. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Apparently, Smith's ego prevents his General History from being a reliable source. This leads historians to question whether his captivity occurred at all. His egocentricity may be seen in the following passage from his General History: Captain Smith, who, by his own example, good words, and fair promises, set some to mow, others to bind thatch, some to build houses, others to thatch them, himself always bearing the greatest task for his own share, so that in sort time he provided most of them lodgings, neglecting any for himself (106). If this quote had been written by one of Smith's fellow settlers, we may regard it as substantial evidence. However, it was written by Smith, so he seems to be boasting about his selflessness and leadership ability. Furthermore, according to Egloff and Chief Crazy Horse, Smith did not even mention his attempted murder to his fellow settlers when he returned to the fort after the Indians released him. Furthermore, he did not include the incident in an account of his captivity, which he wrote immediately following his period of captivity (Vincent 1; Chief Crazy Horse 1). Thus, Smith's General History is not reliable. According to Chief Crazy Horse, Egloff, and most modern historians, following the alleged attempt on his life, Pocahontas did not fall in love with John Smith. Contrary to common belief, Pocahontas married the Indian Kocoum in 1610. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
