This document provides a script for a music video for the song "Like I Can" by Sam Smith. The script outlines 6 scenes that will make up the black and white video. The scenes follow a protagonist as he watches his ex-girlfriend with someone new, has a flashback of their relationship, realizes he needs to let her go, sees her arguing with her new partner, and ultimately reunites with her on a park bench at the end. Each section describes the shots that will be used and how they connect to the lyrics and melody of the song.

1. 0:00 – 0:30 – we see a lot of ES of
the place where the video is going
to be filmed; Manchester City
Centre. We also see numerous
characters featured in the video.
Such as business men/ women,
families, homeless people and young
groups of teenagers filmed in TS.
Another TS we see is of the
buildings in the area. The last
shot of this scene is a Wide Angle
Shot of the protagonists of this
music video walking through a
tunnel.
After one second of playing the
song we are welcomed by the
lyrics “he could be a sinner or
gentlemen.” The music is calm
and mellow featuring a bass
guitar which then kicks off a
beat with a foot drum and a
tambourine. This scene is filmed
in black and white. The scenes
quickly change by flashing off
the screen on to the scene.
2. 0:30 – 1:00 – In this scene we see
a TS from behind following the
protagonist walking out of the
tunnel. This is then followed by a
CUS of the protagonists face as he
discovers something, we find out
what that is from a ZS of a boy and
girl walking hand in hand, the next
shot is an ES of the protagonists
character dropping to one knee as
the main character watches on we
again see a CUS of his
disappointment and a slow motion TS
of him dropping confectionary he
bought for the girl.
In this scene we then here the
chorus of the song which starts
off with “Why are you looking
down all the wrong roads?” We
then begin to hear a faster
harder beat kicking in and the
sound of piano keys. This scene
will be black and white
throughout.

3. 1:00 – 1:30 – In this next scene we
first see an ES of the singer of
the song sat down on a bench beside
the protagonist singing the lyrics
to him as if he is giving advice.
The protagonist is still watching
the goings on of the couple; we
then see a flashback that he is
having of the girl. The flashback
is when him and the female
character were in a relationship
this then goes onto them arguing
which signifies the reason they
broke up.
The first lines of lyrics in
this scene are “A chance
encounter of circumstance”. The
beat stays fast and up beat
throughout this scene until the
last 5 seconds we come to a soft
mellow part again. At the last 5
seconds this is when the
flashback scene will appear.
This scene will be black and
white throughout.
4. 1:30 – 2:00 –The protagonist then
has the realization of instead of
chasing her but to let her be happy
this is shown through a CUS of his
face when he has a smile on his
face. A TS following the
protagonist is shown as we follow
him in the street.
The lyrics at the start of this
scene are “when mine is the
heart and salt of the soul” The
beat stays fast and up beat
throughout the scene. The scene
will be black and white
throughout.
5. 2:00 – 2:30 – We then come across a
TS following the protagonist
walking through a park to find a
bench. This then cuts to a ES of
the couple arguing which then ends
with a TS of the girl running off
with make up running down her face.
This scene begins with the lines
“why are you looking down all
the wrong roads?” After we see
the couple arguing she instantly
runs off realizing that she’s
made a mistake and goes to find
the main character. The scene
will be black and white
throughout.

last scene with a TS going all the
way round the female characters
body as she stands still. This then
moves to a ES of the protagonist
and the female character looking at
each other, we then end the scene
with a MS and a TS as they go into
a hug and walk over to sit on the
bench together.
This scene begins at the middle
of the end of the chorus, these
lyrics are “but they’ll never
love you like I can”. This scene
will show how much the
protagonist and the female
character love and care for each
other as they end the scene by
sitting on the bench sharing a
