Skrillex - Ruffneck Bass Analysis
1. INTENTIONS The intention of this video is to promote Skrillexʼs new single and
try to bring in a bigger audience for Skrillex by making an
interesting video and promoting, strong themes are used such as
drug taking, violence and panic.
At the beginning of the video we see Santa taking drugs and this
straight away draws the viewer in as it is extremely weird and
different, then we see him sitting in front of kids as they come
towards him and he looks dizzy and it builds up to the drop and
gets even more weird after that, by showing shots of the kids
screaming at him with weird camera effects.
I think even if someone was not a fan of Skrillex they could watch
this video easily as it is very interesting and weird.
REPRESENTATION
OF THE ARTIST
This music video, even though it does not include the artist in it, it
shows that Skrillex has a dark side and a dark sense of humor, it
also shows Skrillexʼs style which is very abstract and different and
very weird.

2. RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN MUSIC
AND VISUALS
There is a very strong relationship between the music and
visuals, the footage will follow the drop of the song and the
footage will stutter if the song is stuttering and weird camera
effects are used, kind of a fish eye lenses effect is used to also
mimic the drop of the song.
The camera plays a big part in the effects during the song, things
on the track like the rising and descending sounds the camera will
pan to a certain direction, for example when there is a
descending sound the camera pans down from santas face to
below him.
At the beginning of the song where it is not as intense and a bit
more chilled the editing is a lot less edgy, shots stay on for longer
and it is slower paced but during the drop the editing becomes
more fast paced and edge.
When there is a sort of distorted ringing sound on the track the elf
is seen ringing a small bell he has while yelling to symbolize the
distorted ringing sound, also when there is a ʻmunchingʼ sound on
the track santa mimics this sound with his mouth.
During the drop of the song it looks as if Santa has a panic attack
from the effects of taking drugs and this justifies the fast paced
editing and the drop as well, shots are used well like the camera
shot zooming in and out again trying to reflect what it would be
like during a panic attack.
Though this is a minor detail at the end of the video when santa is
outside in the snow, right at the end when he nose starts bleeding
as it hits the snow itʼs in beat to the last few notes of the piano.

3. RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN LYRICS
AND VISUALS
There is not very many lyrics in this song other than “Are you
ready for the Ruffneck Bass?” when this is said an elf kind of just
shouts it towards the camera, so weʼre seeing the elf from santaʼs
eyes during his panic attack.
Also there is a part where one of the young girls comes to Santa
and she says the “Bass” part also.
VOYEURISM
(NOTION OF
LOOKING)
At the beginning of the music video we see Santa taking drugs
which is a private thing we people really shouldnʼt be watching
someone do, we also see him putting on his Santa outfit.

4. INTERTEXTUALITY This could possibly be a reference to the movie ʻbad santaʼ, itʼs
the idea if ʻwhat if santa went bad?ʼ and in this video we see him
doing things such as taking drugs and beating up security guards.
TYPICAL OF GENRE It is typical for a dubstep video to have the footage match the
drop of the song, the drop of a dubstep song comes after the rise
and during the rise the footage is normally starting to get more
intense as it builds up to the climax which is the drop, during the
drop there are usually lots of wobbles and stutters and the
footage usually follows this.

5. WHO IS THE
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience are obviously fans of Skrillex but also ravers.
People who like to watch strange videos as this video is definitely
very strange.
WHY WOULD THIS
APPEAL TO TARGET
AUDIENCE
It has a really interesting video which along with the song makes
it just fun to watch, I laugh when Iʼm watching the video because
you see Santa doing things you wouldnʼt think of him doing like
beating up the security guards, so this video appeals to me in that
way.
