2. The Great Gatsby
For the first 25 seconds-the music is fast paced and upbeat. We hear a voiceover
informing the audience when the film is set (1922) and where (New York).
The volume of the music is slightly lowered when key pieces of dialogue are spoken.
The music stops and the trailer fades to black when key credits are shown between
footage.
The pace of the music then slowly builds up as a montage of key shots are shown-with
some credits being shown in between.
Then the title of the film is shown and a shot of Gatsby with the voiceover of a female
saying ‘I wish I had done everything on earth with you’
Finally, the music fades out whilst the date of the film release and final credits are
shown.
3. I feel the trailer has tried to sell the film by focusing on making the audience
identify with each character with the use of dialogue, voiceover and key shots (e.g.
close ups of Gatsby and the other main characters). Music is also used to
enhance the atmosphere of the trailer-life during the 1920’s in New York.
4. Concussion- Official trailer (2015)
The trailer begins with subtle music and a voiceover of a man giving the audience
information and setting the scene. This voiceover becomes diegtic when
important shots are shown.
The music then becomes more fast -paced when a montage of clips containing
key information are shown.
The trailer fades to black before ‘BASED ON A TRUE STORY’ , ‘THIS
DECEMBER’ appear. These fades to black slow the pace down and add
tension.
The trailer also fades to black before a shot when a man asks ‘Who are you?’ and
‘Tell the truth… Tell the truth’ is answered, fading to black again before a short
take is shown and finally the title ‘CONCUSSION’.
5. I believe this trailer effectively engages the audience mainly through the
manipulation of voiceover, to leave the audience wanting to find out more. Also,
by emphasising that the film is based on a true story through bold text, gives the
film a sense of importance and makes it even more intriguing.
6. Dumb and Dumber - (1994) Official
Quotes are shown in between footage. These quotes separate the footage into groups.
The two main characters are seen acting in the way the quote describes to give the
audience a taste of what they are like and the kind of humour the film includes.
1. “There is no sin except stupidity” - Oscar Wilde
2. “Always you have to contend with the stupidity of men” - Henry David Thoreau
3. “Stupidity is a talent for misconception” - Edgar Allan Poe
Upbeat, happy music is used throughout. The music pauses when something is said to
try and make the audience laugh.
The second quote when the trailer fades to black, allows a change in music. The music
is still happy but more upbeat and fast-paced.
7. A montage of clips representing the stupidity of men are then shown after the
second quote.
A montage of clips where men misunderstood people/information are shown
after the third quote.
The main actors are then given credit. The text appears on top of a close up of
the actor and then their most funny moment is shown. The text is very
cartoon-like and bold.
The trailer fades to black and the title ‘DUMB AND DUMBER’ is then shown.
The technique I believe aided this trailers success was the grouping of shots in
relation to a quote. It allowed the audience to get a taster of the characters and
the atmosphere of the film.
8.
9. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
The music begins very quietly and attention is drawn to key pieces of dialogue- ‘Thomas, it’s
okay’.
Then the music becomes fast-paced and a montage of clips follow this pace.
The trailer then fades into the 20th Century Fox logo.
After this, the music becomes much quieter and the audience hear the voiceover ‘The world
outside is hanging on by a very thin thread...It’s only a matter of time before the player virus
wipes the rest of us out’.
Key lines of dialogue give the audience context. Music stops to draw attention to certain pieces of
information. For example, ‘The maze was one thing, but you kids wouldn’t last one day in the
scorch’.
Dialogue is also used to intrigue the audience- ‘Don’t you want to know why this all happened’-
draws the audience into watching the film so that they can find out.
10. The trailer fades to black to show the text ‘BASED ON THE BEST SELLING
NOVEL’, ‘THIS SEPTEMBER’, ‘THE MAZE’, ‘WAS JUST THE BEGINNING’,
‘THE SCORCH’, ‘WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING’, ‘THE MAZE RUNNER:THE
SCORCH TRIALS’. The text always falls on a drum beat and the footage
between each section creates tension and emphasis. As these pieces of text
fall on drum beats, the audience is made to pay attention to them and learn
that this film is the second of a sequel of films, is based on a popular novel
and will be out in September.
