3. From looking at XXL magazine, and KERRANG! Magazine, I decided that I wanted to use conventions
from both magazine rather than just using one.
I used the convention of having a short but bold masthead in the top left corner of the front cover
from XXL magazine, as I felt that it makes it stand out enough without it taking up the entire top of the
page. For the main image, I took the idea of a medium close-up shot from both magazines.
My influences from KERRANG! Magazine came from the props their models had used in the main
image, which is why I used an electric guitar as a prop to match the genre of rock. As for the main
model, I continued to follow the conventions of KERRANG! Magazine with the make up I used which
included, Black eye shadow and eyeliner for the rock look.
When sorting out the house style of my magazine, I did not follow the conventions from either
magazine, and instead chose to do a colour scheme of blue, black, grey and white, a colour scheme
that neither of the magazines had used. Ideas for my cover lines came from KERRANG! Magazine, as I
took the convention of having the main cover line on a different coloured background.
I pulled away from the conventions of the magazines when creating my own fonts on illustrator, as I
tried to create fonts that did not copy the look of the other magazine’s fonts.

5. For my contents page, I used the conventions from kerrang! Magazine in which I used a large image at
the top of the contents page rather than using a lot of smaller ones. I also followed the idea of “THIS
WEEK” banner above the features section. However, rather than adding the title of the masthead in the
same banner, I added in below the banner. I followed the convention of having the contents on the
top let corner of the page also, making sure to follow my house style.
I moved away from the conventions of kerrang! Magazine but having fewer things on my contents
page, making it less packed than the original.

7. I followed the conventions of kerrang! Magazine by having my headline big and bold, and placed at
an angle. I also decided not to do the usual question and answer style of journalism. Also rather than
having a large image and a few smaller images for my dps as kerrang! Magazine often does, I chose to
have smaller images against a plain background using the colours of my house style instead. I felt this
gave more attention to the article while also allowing the images to stand out enough due to the blank
background.
