The best part of this short story is that it leaves the reader thinking about the action of the characters.
"Once upon a Time" by Nadine Gordimer pushed me to analyze what exactly happened in the story.
When I first started to read the story, I did not think much about the plot. I thought the story was
about a family who was paranoid for no reason and the theme would be something insignificant.
After I read that the child was killed, I was taken back. It's as if I was walking up a staircase and
suddenly one step broke causing me to tumble down. So after spending time rereading her story, I
thought the theme was very clever. The elements of irony, symbolism, repetition, and even climax
tie together perfectly with each other to form the theme of human beings creating their own self
destruction. The best part is that the theme is also very applicable to real life. In the story the parents
were too focused on keeping their child safe that they lost track of what was important and caused
their own self destruction after their child was killed by the very same things they wanted. Humans

Imagery And Their Mind Through Descriptions And Sensory...
Imagery is the use of language to create "mental pictures" in one's mind through descriptions and
"sensory perceptions" (Wheeler). In"Digging," Heaney establishes the setting of the poem by
describing that he is in what seems to be a room with a window that overlooks an area of green. He
starts the poem off with "Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. /
Under my window, a clean rasping sound / When the spade sinks into gravelly ground: / My father,
digging. I look down" ("Digging"). He uses the appeals to sound, as in "a clean rasping sound" and
"the spade sinks into gravelly ground," as well as appeals to sight, "I look down," and appeals to
touch, "[b]etween my finger and my thumb," to create an image in the reader's mind of what that
day, or perhaps thought, looked like. The image that is created is one that shows contrast, in this
case between an unidentified narrator and his father. As the poem continues, Heaney describes "But
I've no spade to follow men like them. / Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests. /
I'll dig with it." The contrast that this furthers is the idea that the narrator is very different from his

As the story so often goes, I was once required to write, and thus I have been writing (largely under
mandate) ever since. Although a Grandmother, who I in my childhood stayed with weekly, spoke
chiefly in Spanish, I never learned enough of the language to ever properly forget it. This is a
decision I've come to deeply regret in light of the book sales of Richard Rodriguez. My writing in
adolescence was characterized by its being profoundly uninteresting. The highlight was a highly
directed poem concerning the creation of chocolate bars, only a poem in the sense that jury duty is a
form legal activism. To be resentful of the nature this sort of writing exercise however would be
narcissistic to the point of supposing a person who's sentience spans only two presidential terms
would has had anything unique to say about chocolate bars, allowed the proper poetic license. I
came to much prefer reading over writing, as somebody had something to gain in that exchange. As
it turns out, writing assignments persisted unabated by the logic of this argument. Eventually
becoming dissatisfied with the quantity of anachronisms in English, I would later go on to study the
Japanese language over 4 semesters. The highlight of this section of writing was a 12 sentence
narrative about a thief boy, written by an American college student at the level of a Japanese

When I think of oppression, I think of racism, sexism, and classism. These three things come to
mind when I hear the word oppression because I think that they are the three most common ways of
oppression. Racism is one of the most common forms of oppression. I see it every day and don't
even recognize it or do anything about it. Sexism, oppression against genders, is the same way. I talk
about genders all the time and don't even realize I'm doing it. Classism talks about where the
wealthy and poverty line are in society. I normally choose to stay away from talking about Classism
because my family isn't rich but we aren't poor either. In this paper, I will be talking about how
oppression affects the daily lives of people. For this part, I interviewed one of my roommates and a
good friend of mine to get their inputs on oppression. I also will be talking about the journal that I
was kept track of for this assignment. Lastly, I will include a self–reflection on how I feel about
oppression. For the first part being the interview, I decided to ask five questions. The only thing I
told the people I was interviewing was this is a paper on oppression. The first person, person "a" in
the interviews, I decided to interview was a good friend of mine who happens to have a minor in

Several species and organisms rely on water to survive. Some organisms use it as a source to drink
and others uses water as their living environment. This experiment is to calculate many aspects of
the water that surrounds Corpus Christi. Water is the key to life on Earth and thus why water is so
important. According to the Lab Report water quality is the quality of water and if it is considered
acceptable drinking water. Water quality consist of its chemical, physical and biological
characteristics. These properties can be studied through pH testing, nitrogen testing, Phosphorous
testing and many other useful ways. Water quality is important because it allows scientist to identify
if the water is in a good condition to drink or sustain life overall and it dramatically effects how
healthy it is. The objective of this lab was to experiment if the water quality around the Corpus
Christi is a reliable source of water for organisms and to reach an understanding of the water quality
of the water surrounding Corpus Christi.
STUDY AREA
The location of the water sampling was in three different areas known as the Ward Island, Oso
Bride, and Packery Channel. For the Ward Island and the Packery Channel were both well cleaned
and little to no trash in the property. As for the Oso bridge the location was surrounded with
unwanted trash. Shown in figure 1 is a variety of trash that interrupts the growth of organisms in the
location throughout Oso bridge. The Oso bridge had several small like rocks throughout the
location, while the Ward Island consisted of sand, and the Packery Channel had a variation of mud
and sand. The weather was fairly similar in all locations especially the Packery Channel and the Oso
bridge because the experiments were conducted on the same day. The weather for all consisted with
an average of 80 degrees. For all three experiments the wind was blowing somewhat fast at a speed
of 15–17 miles per hour.

John Edgar Wideman begins his piece, Our Time, with a description of the world he grew up in. He
takes the reader through the story of his brother, Robby, using a variety of voices and points of view.
In this narration of his brother's life he brings to light his own dilemma with writing the piece. He
uses a variety of voices and points of view to demonstrate the different perspectives of Robby 's
story. To contest the ethical dilemma of telling someone else's story without exploiting it, Wideman
addresses the issue head on. By reading Our Time, a writer could learn much from Wideman, and
adopt a number of his methods for different writing styles.
One of Wideman's main writing methods is his use of multiple voices and points of view. This
becomes apparent even in the first page of the text. Wideman introduces his essay with a letter. It is
not addressed to anyone, neither is it signed, but, it is written as if every character in his story was
speaking. The tone is his own, the subject is his brother, Robby, and parts of the letter reveal advise
from Garth and his mother. This presentation of a multi–narrative style is present throughout the
essay. It gives the reader a sense of authenticity that cannot be achieved through third person
narration because it places the audience in the mindset of the person speaking. By switching points

The biological view is a view that Eric Olson does stand for. Looking back at the standard view,
Olson claims that the view may claim that persons did not come into the world first as an embryo,
but instead as a full developed fetus . Once again, this view contradicts Olson's views. He believes
that people were once an embryo. This brings about his biological viewpoints. Olson claims that
people were statistically identical with the fetuses and embryos in their past. Of course, this view
would bring about the question as to whether personhood is worried. If one was once an embryo or a
fetus, then what type of mental properties did they hold? Lynn Baker contrasts this view in her reply
to Olson.
Eric Olson also did some experimental activities to better state his biological views. The first view
he used was about upper brain obliteration. This experiment was thought out with regards to
exponents of the Standard View. In summarization, if the cerebrum of a brain was destroyed, but the
brain stem and autonomic nervous system was still in tack, one would still be alive. He then asked
if, in this states, would one still be a person, even if one was not fully "there". This experiment
contradicts the Standard View because one could survive this as an organism but not as a person. To
me, this explains that the Standard View defines personhood as one who can have mental thoughts,
which then would claim a person to be an organism. The
other "experiment", or biological view, that Olson looked into was in regards to a fetus human
vegetable. Human vegetables are people who do not have a functioning cerebrum. Specifically, a 5–
month old fetus with a dead cerebrum, according to the standard view was not a person. A fetus, is a
potential person, while a human vegetable is not a possible person.
As one can see, Baker spent a lot of time depicting Olson's views. She specifically explained by she
rejects this, and the fact being that other philosophers would also rejects his biological view. As

Furthermore, the poem includes words and phrases when addressing the grave that follow the theme
of starvation, such as, "famished grave" (1), "Gnaw thine own sides, fast on" (3), and "I cannot
starve thee out: I am thy prey" which emphasizes that the beast of death is starving to take
someone's life. This animal–like aggressiveness adds to the already negative image of the beast.
This imagery also shows how the speakers thinks of death since it comes from her words which
shows that she sees death in a very negative way. Due to this, the speaker is angry and does not want
to give death what it wants, which is to take someone's life. Additionally, although death is
something normally feared, the speaker shows that she is not fearful by saying "I have no fear / of
thy dark project" (3–4) when speaking to the grave. She expresses that she does not want to die and
her "heart is set / On living" (4–5), which explains her resentfulness towards death. She also
understands that death is inevitable as she says, "I cannot starve thee out: I am thy prey / And thou
shalt have me; but I dare defend / That I can stave thee off" (6–8). This shows that even though she
knows that she will one day die, she still doesn't want to give death what it wants and will fight as

A Broadway Dream Book Analysis
Picture it. Broadway during the 1920s. Florenz Ziegfeld produces a revue called Ziegfeld's Follies.
Girls appear in elaborate costumes bordering on the risque. Gangsters are running rampant from Al
Capone to Bugs Moran to Machine Gun Kelly. This is the world in which Agnes "Bobbie" Storey
finds herself.
Agnes' family lived in Leaholme until the war nearly closed their inn, forcing them to find work in
London. Shortly afterward, her father dies of Spanish Influenza, and Agnes is forced to find a job to
help support her family. She manages to land a job at a restaurant belonging to a friend of her father.
It is here that she wins The Most Beautiful Barmaid in London contest. This sparks Andre Charlot to
offer her a spot in his revue that is traveling to Broadway. She immediately accepts, thus beginning
her love affair with fame, success, and New York City.
A Broadway Dream by Jane Hill is a fiction based on the historical person by the name of Bobbie
Storey. Amazon has this correctly classified as historical fiction or biographical fiction; however, it
was incorrectly classified as romance on OBC. The book is fairly short with only about 200 pages.
It may seem odd, but my favorite part of this story was the ending. I am not familiar with the history
of the 1920s nor the life of Bobbie Storey. Therefore when I read the ending, I was actually taken

Prince Manfred even blames fate on his wife for only giving him one eligible heir. "But she never
received any other answer then reflections on her own sterility, who had given him but one heir."3
The paranoid thoughts that Prince Manfred has push him to make the wedding sooner than planned,
thinking that it would be a faster end to the prophecy as well but, this is not accepted by his wife. He
has lost complete control over his thoughts and his actions. When people react to unexplained
events, disaster follows such as with Conrad's untimely death. Conrad the son of Manfred is killed
by the fallen statue head in the courtyard of the castle. He was killed on impact. "Conrad, the son
was three years younger, a homely youth, sickly, and of no promising disposition."4 After learning
of this unexplainable event Manfred does not believe what he saw. "Miraculous helmet one exactly
that on the figure, in the black marble?"5 Manfred's attitude and thoughts change drastically from
fearful to anger after seeing that the prophecy was indeed completed after all. This event affects the

A Summary Of The Language In Antony And Cleopatra
This passage, taken from William Shakespeare's play Antony and Cleopatra, shows Octavius Caesar
discussing with Lepidus about what they should do about Antony whom Caesar thinks at this
moment in the play is currently frolicking with Cleopatra, the pharaoh of Egypt, instead of doing his
duties. The passage also contains accounts from Caesar about the man Antony once was as well as
his vivid opinion on Antony's current state. This essay will analyse the language, form and the tone
of Caesar the passage as well as examining its significance in relation to the rest of the play. The
entire passage is written in poetic form which emphasises not only the power and position within the
Roman hierarchy Lepidus and Caesar are in but also that they very much act like Roman leaders. It
creates an aura of pomposity around them and that they lack a certain humbleness that characters
such as Enobarbus possess as, up to this point, he has spoken in prose. The poetic form also sets up
that they are very much equals to Antony and Cleopatra due to them speaking in poetic form in the
previous scene. This equality foreshadows the rivalry and antagonistic behaviour between Caesar
and Antony due to them being similar and yet different. This pomposity is furthered when Caesar,
while speaking in the third person, lays out the recent actions of Antony. The manner in which he

One of the many benefits of having the novel written in a diary format, is that you get to really
understand what the character feels about his surroundings. Most of the other people in the society
don't notice their setting nor do they have knowledge of anything else. Equality 7–2521 describes
his surroundings as being small and dark, all the buildings which are plain mark the housing of
several different people. All the citizens of this society are over–worked and tired yet they have no
intention of complaining because they fear the punishment. This novel would not be the same if it
was written in any other form other then a diary, as well as if the novel was written in first person. It
would not have to same effect on the readers. There are so many diaries, but all are written in the
first person, so "The Anthem" is unique. We get a better understanding when Equality 7–2521 writes
in third person, without it, we would only hear his thoughts and observations instead of the ones he

Despite the fact that Asian Americans have been in Hollywood for decades, there are very few
positive representations of them in film. More often than not, they've been depicted as stereotypical
caricatures, and more specifically, as foreigners who can't speak grammatically correct English.
