Parallel Experiences of Three Troubled Women in Cunningham's, The Hours
According to Chronicles magazine, "Woolf was undeniably a brilliant writer." Woolf's work of Mrs.
Dalloway was read by fifteen–year–old Michael Cunningham in order to impress an older girl in
school. As he stated, "the book really knocked me out." Once older, Cunningham wanted to write
about Mrs. Dalloway, but thought not too many people would want to read a book about reading a
book. He then thought he might want to read a book about reading the right book. Hence, The Hours
was written. Cunningham would incorporate Mrs. Dalloway into "a book about reading a book."
The Hours weaves through three woman's lives. As the novel unfolds, it shows that these three

The final narrative deals with Clarissa Vaughn. Clarissa lives in a Manhattan apartment in the 1990s
with her 19 year old daughter and lesbian lover. She is overwhelmed with planning a party for a
local poet whom she is the publisher. The local poet, Richard, once had a relationship with Clarissa,
but is now a dying homosexual with AIDS.
When I look up the meaning of metaphors in Webster it says "a figure of speech in which a work for
one idea or thing is used in place of another to suggest a likeness between them." The Hours by
Michael Cunningham is enriched with many complex metaphors. While intertwining three different
woman's lives, Cunningham uses a wide range of metaphors to help mean something in one story
and tie into the next woman's story. Using deconstructive interpretation to investigate these
strategically placed metaphors can be difficult and exciting, yet challenging.
The flow of the novel starts as Woolf finds the opening line of her new novel: "Mrs. Dalloway
decided she would buy the flowers herself." The flowers would proof an important metaphor in the
book. This thought of buying the flowers herself would link Woolf and Clarissa. Clarissa states the
same words to her lover in preparing for Richard's party. And yet the flowers would reappear in
Laura Browns life as her husband buys flowers for his own birthday. Flowers that normally
represent life and color ironically represent sadness and loneliness in this novel.

Adaptations of Virginia Wolfe Essay
In approaching a topic such as adaptations, one has to first understand what exactly adaptation
means and how it is applied to such works to get the product the "adapter" is trying to create and for
what reasons they are "adapting" for. The American Heritage Dictionary defines Adaptation as the
following: "1(a). The act for process of adapting. 1(b). The state of being adapted. 2. A composition
recast into a new form: "The play is an adaptation of a short novel." 3. An alteration or adjustment
by which a species or individual improves its condition in relationship to its environment. (10)" The
definition that we'll be looking at closely is the second one; "a composition recast into a new form."

Woolf takes the reader on a psychological roller coaster with flashbacks to Mrs. Dalloway's' life,
specifically her teen–age to college years. She shows us all of the decisions Dalloway had to make
and how those decisions had shaped her life. Clarissa Dalloway had chosen a life that would be safe
for her, by marrying well and having a child, by living the proper political life. Throughout the
novel, Clarissa thinks back onto how she could have had a life of sexual freedom and excitement
with Richard, her ex–lover from her college years. Of course this is all put into play by the arrival of
him from India, because she hadn't seen him in a very long time. All of these occurrences and
flashbacks just add to Clarissa's growing–depression that she barely is able to hold onto in the story.
The most interesting and most significant aspect of Mrs. Dalloway is that it takes place in one day,
which is what Cunningham and Daldry built their book and movie off of. The idea of telling a story
of a woman's thoughts in one day is an amazing one because it is so intrinsic and specific that going
past one day would take forever to divulge and digest. One of the most important parts of Mrs.
Dalloway is the relationship between Septimus and Clarissa. Woolf uses Septimus, a war veteran
who's got shell shock, as the alternate persona to Clarissa. I like to think that Septimus was the brain

Jane starts a conversation with Helen, a student who was flogged without reason. She can't
understand why Helen would bear the pain and not rebel.
Jane's rebellious nature can be seen in this passage. She has a hostility towards violent authority.
This is most likely caused by her time spent at the Reeds where she was constantly treated without
respect.
"'And if I were in your place I should dislike her; I should resist her. If she struck me with that rod, I
should get it from her hand; I should break it under her nose.'"

For the first time, Jane sees Miss Ingram, observing her closely. She realizes that Miss Ingram
seems to feel that she is better than everyone else. Jane doesn't seem to have many good feelings
towards Miss Ingram.
Within this passage, it becomes obvious that Miss Ingram is exceedingly haughty. She boasts of her
knowledge subtly, and loves to make herself seem superior to others. She is always seeking to seem
better than everyone else whether knowledge–wise or skill–wise.
"It was not, however, so saturnine a pride! She laughed continually; her laugh was satirical, and so
was the habitual expression of her arched and haughty lip. Genius is said to be self–conscious. I
cannot tell whether Miss Ingram was a

Essay Growing Up, Staying Young
Growing Up, Staying Young
I had trouble sleeping that night. The peaceful, rhythmic breathing of my younger sister across the
room could not calm me as I lay under the covers in the dark, listening for the heavy footsteps of an
elderly man sneaking through the downstairs floor of my house. With one hand firmly choking Red
Blankie, I reached with the other to turn the alarm clock on my bedstand toward me. The fluorescent
red digits whispered 12:03 in the still, black room. Perhaps he will come soon.
Delicate tingles danced up my arms, as I froze like a nervous cat, ears up, ready and alert. I
rehearsed the carefully planned sequence of events in my head. A suspicious and unfamiliar sound

"This world is but a canvas to our imagination," wrote Henry David Thoreau. As a young child, I
clung to this inspirational message and ran with it to millions of marvelous places in my mind. I
believed in everything, from my "invisible" collie Fluffy to Santa Claus, Rudolf, and the rest of the
reindeer. Everything I saw and heard and read sang to me, inspired me, and thrilled me.
When my mom wouldn't let me have a puppy, Fluffy came into my life. She was my imaginary
collie, every bit as real as the dogs I saw climbing against the scratched windows of the mall pet
shops. I took her for walks around my back yard, fed her juicy crimson mulberries from our tree,
and taught her to rescue children from burning buildings, like Lassie did on Nickelodeon. My time
with Fluffy was limited, however, when I found a job in the restaurant business. As the owner,
waiter, and cook, I spent many hours in the red and yellow playhouse in my basement taking orders
from hungry customers and preparing exotic foods for their culinary pleasure.
My best friend Jenny joined me in many of my childhood adventures. After reading Freckle Juice by
Judy Blume in second grade, she and I were convinced we could get rid of her horrible brown
freckles with a fantastic concoction of rainbow colored vitamins, brilliant blue bathroom cleanser,
delightful soap bubbles, hairspray mist, and two tablespoons of mouthwash. Unfortunately, Jenny

Unit 2: Week 2 – Reader Response – Assignment 1 A serial killer could be dining, sitting, or even
living next to you at this very moment. Most killers offer little to no obvious clues that will lead
anyone to detect their often secretive, undercover actions. I ask myself, "How can we be so naive to
these types of people?" Serial killers amongst us are often well educated, portray an All–American
image, yet have a psychotic side to them. First, most serial killers are often well educated. Hannibal

In "Natural Born Celebrities: Serial Killers in American Culture," serial killers are defined as clean
cut, normal, All–American people. Some interviewees shared in chapter five state that the reason
why it takes so long for the culprits to be apprehended is attributed to the ability to carry on with a
normal life. One even offered that in one instance, his victim actually thought he was joking when
he kidnapped her to eventually murder her. In "Mr. Brooks," Earl again is a very successful person.
He is an ordinary, suit wearing, clean shaven, clean cut, successful Portland, Oregon businessman. I
imagine that his killing addiction would shock even his closest, everyday coworkers. Hannibal
Lecter is a former psychiatrist. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of schooling that he
endured and numerous certifications, both federal and state, that he must have attained. Yet, he did
not like arrogant and obnoxious people, therefore, he murdered them. Despite being well educated
and portraying an All–American image, serial killers have a psychotic side to them. Hannibal Lecter
showed this side of him when he killed two prison guards. Not only did he murder them but he ate
some of their body parts and even carved out the face of one of them to use as a way of disguising
himself when he escaped from prison. Earl Brooks murdered in such a cold hearted way. Evidence

Is Sustainable Competitive Advantage Possible, And How Can...
Is sustainable competitive advantage possible, and how can technology be used as its catalyst? This
is the question that has vexed managers and business leaders for decades. According to Michael
Porter, the answer lies in how technology is used. In this Case Study Report, Team 3 discusses how
Mrs. Fields, Inc. leveraged technology for strategic positioning. Mrs. Fields, Inc. did not create the
sweet snack industry, but it was the company's innovative use of technology that helped the
company sustain a competitive advantage over other companies vying for those same impulse snack
dollars.

What Does Mr Hooper Mean When He Continues To Wear The...
Views on this essay range from the American Romanticism characteristics, the symbolisms, and the
levels of the parable. For the example of the American romanticism characters in this story, it is only
portrayed to be the minister himself, Mr. Hooper. "The minister lived his life a man apart from men,
shunned in their health and joy, but ever summoned to their aid in mortal anguish" (Hawthorne 130).
As explained by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the minister uses the black veil as a sort of a cover up for his
"secret sin" so they say that is what he may be hiding. Throughout the story, Hawthorne shows more
and more of Mr. Hooper being the main protagonist, but also the main American Romanticism
character in the story. "Hooper continues to wear the veil through the rest of the day's duties,
including a funeral, at which the veil seems an "appropriate emblem," and a wedding service, at
which it decidedly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hawthorne includes three levels of parable to help understand the symbolism behind Hooper and
why he wears the black veil. The first level would be considered to be that the minister is carrying or
in other words covering the sins of others. Just as Jesus Christ died for our sins. The next level
would be that you cannot hide your secret sins from anyone not even the all ruling, all powerful
God. Lastly, the third one would be that the sin of humanity is the greatest sin which society hides
and ignores. "What, but the mystery which it obscurely typifies has made this piece of crepe so
awful? When the friend shows his inmost heart to his friend; the lover to his best beloved; when
man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his creator, loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his

and, lo! On every visage a Black Veil!" (Hawthorne

Mrs. Dalloway
I. Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf, was published on May 14, 1925 in London, England. The
novel follows Clarissa Dalloway and a variety of other characters throughout the span of one day in
their lives in 1923 London. Woolf utilizes a narrative method of writing. With the novel's structure,
the narrator possesses the ability to move inside of a character's mind and compose her thoughts and
emotions immediately as events occur throughout the day. The novel's main character, Clarissa, is a
middle–aged woman who belongs to the upper–middle class in society and is well–married to a
Member of Parliament–Richard Dalloway. Clarissa's day is full of arrangements for a dinner party
she plans to host that evening. During the novel, numerous other ... Show more content on

Rather than hold lengthy conversations between characters, she frequently writes only of small talk
and leaves more serious topics to be recited in an individual's exclusive thoughts. One of her
purposes in writing the novel is to expose the hypocrisy of society. The characters in the novel range
from eccentric acquaintances to extravagant lords and ladies to vindictive tutors to suicidal veterans.
One example of this theme occurs when Rezia and Septimus attempt to settle down in the park.
When the airplane soars overhead, she writes, "Tears ran down his cheeks (Woolf 21)." While one
may mistake this as joy or, at worst, sorrow over the recent war, Woolf gives the reality of the action
beneath the surface, stating, "They are signaling to me... this exquisite beauty... but he would not go
mad. He would see no more (21)." While Septimus dwindles on the brink of insanity, Rezia chatters
away about nature, unaware of the mess resting beside her. Septimus portrays the appearance of one
man yet expresses an entirely new persona through his contemplations. Another instance of the
theme transpires when Miss Kilman and Clarissa wait for Elizabeth to retrieve her gloves before
going shopping. Clarissa and Kilman both make attempts at small talk. However, both give their
attentions to a mutual disgust of each other. Clarissa simply asks if Kilman is taking Elizabeth to the
stores. Kilman replies dryly, but in

Analysis Of Virginia Woolf 's ' Gone At The Lighthouse '...
Elizabeth Conner 9 November 2017 ENGL–4010–001 Professor Westover Virginia Woolf: Gone to
the Lighthouse, Never to Return Many authors inject a little bit of their personalities and lives into
their writing, making it more relatable to their readers and more marketable to publishers. However,
depending on the work, it can sometimes be difficult to determine what is inspired by real life and
what is merely fiction. Therefore how important an author's biography is to a story can also be hard
to understand. Without knowing about the author, would certain key points be missed, or would the
story still carry the same message and make just as much sense? On the flipside, could information
about the author cause the reader to look for things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1903, when Woolf was in her very early twenties, her other half–brother George began to
sexually abuse her, sliding into bed with her against her will, and almost never leaving her alone.
Shortly after, she tried to commit suicide by jumping out a window, but it was too low to kill her
(Whitworth, 9–10). Virginia met Leonard Woolf briefly in 1904, and after a long and tumultuous
courtship plagued by doubt and Virginia's mental illness, they were married on August 10th, 1912
(Whitworth, 15–17). In 1913, she took a very large dose of sleeping medication, hoping to kill
herself. Before she was dead, however, she was found and her stomach pumped, saving her life
(Whitworth, 17–18). All of these events shaped her life and writing, but certain aspects of what she
experienced really seem to affect how a reader could interpret Mrs. Dalloway. One of the most
important aspects of Woolf's novel which reflects real life is the suicide of Septimus Smith.
Throughout the novel, Septimus is portrayed as a very disturbed man, having just come back from
the war with post traumatic stress disorder which doctors are unable, or perhaps unwilling, to
acknowledge. Therefore, Septimus has hallucinations, night terrors, and is generally feeling so
miserable that he decides to kill himself by jumping out of a window onto the street below (Woolf,
43–49, 76–79). It's a very gut–wrenching affair to the modern reader considering all

Analysis of Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children and...
Transitions of place, time, and character are key to the storytelling in Salman Rushdie's "Midnight's
Children" and Virginia Woolfe's "Mrs. Dalloway". Rushdie explores the History, Nationalism and
Hybridism of the nation of India after they became independent of Great Britain. Woolfe comments
heavily on English society more through her description of her characters, and the weaving of time
and place is an effective way to telling the stories of her characters as we follow them through a
single day. This essay will compare in three passages from "Midnight's Children" the effectiveness
of transitioning from place and time to the way Woolfe did so in "Mrs. Dalloway". Furthermore, it
will explore why each passage is a good demonstration of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This parallels the narrative structure of the novel as being circular, discontinuous and digressive.
The same can easily be said for Mrs Dalloway as the novel almost jarringly weaves through many
points of view. This fragmentation appropriates the concept of history in "Midnight's Children",
which was developed by colonizers. History works for a particular class of ideology, and therefore it
will be contaminated, oblique and subjective. In Mrs. Dalloway the characters themselves are
subjective commentaries on English society, and they have been subjectively contaminated by
Woolfe's opinions of who they represent.
The functionality of history is grounded in the simple assumption that life is shaped like a story.
Whereas Woolfe admittedly wrote in an experimental style that was more of a slice of life than a
traditionally shaped story with a beginning, middle, and end. For Saleem, who is "buffeted by too
much history", it is his memory which creates his own history. The same is true of everyone in "Mrs.
Dalloway". "Memory, as well as fruit, is being saved from the corruption of the clocks". This quote
could have easily been in Mrs. Dalloway, particularly when Clarissa reacted to the suicide of
Septimus and seemed to fear the aging brought on by ticking clocks. Yet, for Rushdie, it is not based
on the universal empty time that has been conceptualized by the colonizers. Notions of time and
space are integrated into both novels.

Dr. Seuss: Not A Real Doctor
As a young child, I always wondered if Dr. Seuss was a real doctor. After doing some digging, I

literature was even important to me. It is a little silly, questioning literature over Dr. Seuss not being
a real doctor, but that's how it was! I would go between these phases of not reading for a while and
reading everyday. Early on I questioned about whether literature was important, and speech therapy
and a few people made me think one way or another. When I was younger, I always had trouble with

Theme of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Parable the “Minister’s...
In Nathaniel Hawthorne's parable the "Minister's Black Veil" his theme of the story is that nobody
can escape a sin. An analysis on the surface of the story is one day Mr. Hooper minister of a
congregation in Milford, MA, a small settlement of puritans, working hard just to sustain life. When
the sexton tolls the bell Mr. Hooper comes out as usual but wearing a black veil. In my opinion this
shows that Mr. Hooper is showing that he committed a sin and he wear the black veil as a way to say
everyone wears a mask. The congregation is confused at why he wears the black veil, though
everyone is afraid of how he'll react if they ask him. The townspeople in the Ministers Black Veil are
the important for finding out the theme. First off they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hooper arrives he is already wearing an appropriate attire to the funeral. To everyone this "the black
veil was an appropriate emblem." This means the parishioners are judge full and can not accept Mr.
Hooper for wearing the black veil as normal wear. Mr. Hooper then still covered with the black veil
about to say his goodbyes to the dead bent over and his face was disclosed. A superstitious old lady
saw "the corpse had slightly shuddered." I think the symbolism that Hawthorne tries to show is the
corpse is now an angel and is shuddering toward the sin that Mr. Hooper committed when it sees his
face, that's why Mr. Hooper stand straight to cover himself with the veil once again.
"That night, the handsomest couple of Milford village were to be joined in wedlock." The wedding
in the story, just like the funeral, has a deeper meaning to the details and symbols of MBV. Mr.
Hooper arrives to the wedding, people thinking he took off the veil, though they were mistaken.
"When mister Hooper came, the first thing their eyes rested upon was the same horrible black veil."
People thought that maybe he would have taken off the black veil after the funeral, but they were
just completely confused when he showed up with it on. The minister looks into a wine glass and
saw his reflection, which then showed how he presented himself he saw horror and "rushed forth
into darkness." Mr. Hooper saw how he

between the gaps of her front teeth. Only when Mrs. Tuttle had gone to fetch the potatoes did
Frances speak.
"Ellie, come over to the rug," she said. "Stand behind that chair, so I can see you."
She did as she was told, placing her hands behind her back and forcing herself to look at the odious
visage of her stepmother. Everything about the woman seemed repellent; her cold, marble face and
those lifeless gray eyes. She did not seem real, this statue of a woman. She did not seem to be
possessed of those usual qualities of humanity: love, forgiveness, patience, and compassion.
"It is not your place to correct me, Eleanor Katherine," she said imperiously. "When I say
something, there is to be unquestioned obedience, every single time. Understood?"
Ellie bowed her head. "Yes, madam, of course."
"You know that I do not permit back talk in this house," she continued, eyeing her sharply. "You
have a dreadful penchant for it, but I suppose that was your late mother's inheritance. Still, such
things cannot be abided. I am the authority in this house, are we clear?"

Overtones In To Kill A Mockingbird
Harper Lee is a fan of using subtle undertones and overtones everywhere in her book To Kill a
Mockingbird. A good example of this is with the quote "'Sometimes the Bible in the hand of one
man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of [another]...There are just some kind of
men...who're so busy worrying about the next world they've never learned to live in this one, and
you can look down the street and see the results.'" (pg. 60). This quote, as a stand–alone, gets gears
turning, but once it's paired with the rest of the book, it gives an entirely new perspective on a
problem that so many people ignore or don't notice. Her book is completely littered with examples
that back up this quote and it's intended meaning. A few examples of this is when the foot–washers
call Miss Maudie and her flowers a sin, when the foot–washers quote scripture to Miss Maudie and
she quotes some right back, when Mrs. Farrow talks about the blacks as if they are wild animals,
when Mrs. Merriweather talks about the cooks and field hands grumbling after Tom's Trials and
when Jem is explaining to Dill why Dolphus Raymond is somewhat of a town outcast.
Some of the extremely devout people (the foot–washers for example), tend to be more worried about
the next life instead of enjoying the one they currently have. By preferring to be inside reading the
Bible instead of outdoors enjoying life and wanting others to do the same, they show how the Bible
gives the ability to be scrutinized less by peers. But

In stark contrast, to Roderick's recklessness towards Christina, James shows Mrs Light's ardent
devotion towards her daughter, whom she once regarded as, a "very ugly baby; for the first two

religious revelation that, in fact, Christina is profoundly beautiful. Mrs Light's about–face
concerning Christina's prettiness, she conveys to Rowland as a mythological tale in which she sees
"a little girl of four or five, very fantastically dressed" (208) whom she is taken aback by the child's

This helplessness is apparent by his emotional outburst to her astute comments: thus proving her

leave her with some semblance of dignity.
At any rate, Roderick tries to disprove her theory that he is

Important Components Of A Virtual Team Performance Essay
One of the most important components in any type of team is communication. Excellent
communication between the team members is important to achieve the team goals. Talking about
achieving goals of the team, it is central to have shared team goals. Also, mutual respect and trust
among the team members are main components of the team as well. There are five identified
components of a virtual team. "There differentiators– commitment and engagement, shared
processes for decision making, information flow, trust, and collaboration– are the most important
components of optimal virtual team performance" (Derosa & Lepsinger, 2010, p. 51). Not all teams
perform the same functions; however, some teams use a similar approach to reach the goals. There
are many types of teams in today's business world and those teams have similarities in a way they
approach the goals. Teams today are more diverse and more open to the news changes compare to
the teams in the past.

Mr. Hooper In The Veil
"I can't really feel as if good Mr. Hooper's face was behind that piece of crape," said the sexton. I
feel as if Mr. Hooper was battling with his own sin. He thought his face was going to reveal all of
his transgressions which is why he kept his face concealed from the congregation and his fiancée.
From my point of view, it sounds like our main character Mr. Hooper is suffering from his very own
wrong doing. In article 1 lines 4 and 5 it states that Individuals could no longer see his kindness or
good heart Which means that his appearance had transitioned because of the veil so he was looked
upon differently. To me It seems as if Mr. Hooper is facing something unpleasing in his life which
why he is concealing himself from others. In line 5 it also says He opened his most significant
sermon by discussing "secret sins" which makes the congregation speculate as to what his sin may
be. Before he started wearing the veil, the congregation deeply respected him but after discerning
him their notion of him instantly changed. He took the time to show the congregation that everyone
could be hiding behind confidential sin, but still want to criticize others as if they are flawless. ...

is a conjecture because no one knows if Mr. Hooper has committed this act. Numerous say that he
might have slept with the young girl who passed away. They stated that if the covering came off he'd
probably be frightened by her glimpse. Also in lines 9 and 10 it states This sort of conduct would
avert him from being able to divulge his sin to his fiancée and to conceal his mortification from the

Does Mr. Hooper Really Wear The Minister's Black Veil?
If you saw one of your leaders wearing a black veil what would you think? In the story, "The
Minister's Black Veil ", A minister named Mr. Hooper comes to church with a black veil on his face.
The people of the village were confused and curious on why he was wearing the veil. Although, the
question is, does Mr. Hooper wear the veil because of his own "secret sins" or is he bearing the sins
of the people? In my opinion, I think he wears the veil because of his secret sins. First of all, I
imagine that Mr. Hooper wears the veil for his own personal sins for many reasons. For an example,
the first article says, "the sin that Mr. Hooper admonished himself over was the temptation or
dalliance with a female.". Meaning, that Mr. Hooper feels

My Current Company For Three Years
I have worked for my current company for three years. In that time, I have worked under two
Directors with two very different leadership styles. My first Director was more of an autocratic
leader "who tends to centralize authority and derive power from position, control of rewards, and
coercion" (Daft, 2015). Conversely, my second and current Director is a democratic leader who
"delegates authority to others, encourages participation, relies on subordinates' knowledge for
completion of tasks, and depends on subordinates respect for influence" (Daft, 2015). These two
leadership styles are completely opposite, but leadership is needed in organizations. "Leadership is

The company prides itself on having an open door policy, but I never once felt like I could walk into
her office and have a conversation. Since I could not talk to my Director I sought out other managers
within the organization to mentor me and help fulfill the expectations that I had for a supervisor. The
stressful environment that I worked in made it hard for me to grow professionally. I also had very
little motivation to work hard for someone who never acknowledged any of my achievements. Her
type of leadership made me work just hard enough to avoid receiving an email from her detailing
what I had done incorrectly. Due to her lack of management, there was no trust between us because I
did not respect her as a superior. I completed exactly what was required and nothing more because
the motivation was not there for me to give that extra effort. She also routinely criticized
subordinates in front of others causing "humiliation, offence and distress, and which may interfere
with job performance and/or cause an unpleasant working environment" (Cooper, 2010). Due to her
treatment of myself and my peers none of us were willing to go above and beyond what was asked
of us. It was tough to know what was expected of us because we never had team meetings or one–
on–one meetings to outline expectations or to review past performance. This public criticism was
embarrassing for those who had to endure it and instilled fear in those who witnessed it. After

A Brief Note On ' Labor And Leisure '
Katy Miller Labour and Leisure essay two Women and Labour: The changing roles in our working
society through a lens. It 's hard to believe in this day and age with so many opportunities for
woman to become successful in a carer and contribute to the working society that before the First
World War only ninety years ago marriage meant the end of that chance for so many young people.
By looking at both short films and film depictions, I want to show the journey of how the Labour
industry has changed from being a majority lead male dominated working environment with the
social status for woman changing from those who are either unmarried or in poor lower–class
families in domestic feminine held jobs, to those of married woman, in a well–to–do family made to
give up chances of education and carer for themselves, married off to become leisurely ladies of the
house and made to stay home with the children while there husband became the sole earner.
Regardless of her social status, most woman surrendered her rights from the day she married but if
on the off chance she was able to work in one of these domestic arenas such as the textile and
clothing industry the jobs would have been of little satisfaction and that of a low wage. This was to
be true of a time in Victorian England, but in 1895 French director Louis Lumiẻre created a short

Personal Narrative- Christmas Cookies Essay
Personal Narrative– Christmas Cookies
Although I have grown up to be entirely inept at the art of cooking, as to make even the most
wretched chef ridicule my sad baking attempts, my childhood would have indicated otherwise; I was
always on the countertop next to my mother's cooking bowl, adding and mixing ingredients that
would doubtlessly create a delicious food. When I was younger, cooking came intrinsically with the
holiday season, which made that time of year the prime occasion for me to unite with ounces and
ounces of satin dark chocolate, various other messy and gooey ingredients, numerous cooking
utensils, and the assistance of my mother to cook what would soon be an edible masterpiece. The

mixed with two cups of sugar, the bitterness is alleviated into an addicting batter, which makes one
smile instead of cringe.
Once my mother finished with the "I told you so's" concerning the unsweetened chocolate, I was
able to mold the dough into cookies and roll it through a flurry of powdered sugar. This was
probably my favorite part, because I could get creative with the shapes of the cookies, snowmen
being my favorite. While making my snowmen, I came upon a dilemma; I thought about making a
Santa Claus figurine out of my dough, but my mother was Jewish, so I wasn't quite sure what man
comes down the chimney on Hanukah. My father, being Catholic, had always talked about a plump
guy with a rosy face that wriggled down the chimney at Christmas, but nobody had ever mentioned
anything about chimneys and Hanukah. After voicing my predicament, my slightly senile and loopy
grandmother, who was also in the room, cast a scornful look my way and boomed, "Santa Moses, of
course!" I couldn't picture what a Santa

The Theme of Mental Health Illustrated in Woolf's Mrs....
'Mrs. Dalloway', by Virginia Woolf is a derivative text of 'The Hours', written by Michael
Cunningham. The novels both share an important theme of mental health. The circumstances of
mental health are commonly sympathetic, and empathetic. The characters Septimus and Clarissa in
'Mrs. Dalloway' and Richard, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolf in 'The Hours' show the strongest
symbols for this theme. Most of the problems and treatments these characters face are in direct
result of the age they live in. Both novels express a relationship between era, illnesses and
treatments. The clearest illness was that of Septimus, in 'Mrs. Dalloway'. Septimus suffered from

On the other hand, the sinister Sir William Bradshaw wishes Septimus were in a 'rest' home and to
undergo re–programming. Bradshaw's awareness is especially revealing of the attitude of some
doctors at the time:
'Health we must have; and health is proportion; so that when a man comes into your room and says
he is Christ... ...and has a message... ...and threatens... ...to kill himself, you invoke proportion; order
rest in bed; rest in solitude; silence and rest; rest without friends, without books; without messages;
six months' rest...' (Page 110).
Woolf's own experiences could be reflected off of those of Bradshaw's thoughts. Woolf portrays
doctors to be useless. The delusions of Septimus are shown through Woolf's characteristic stream of
consciousness style.
'Once you fall, Septimus repeated to himself, human nature is on you. Holmes and Bradshaw are on
you. They scour the desert. They fly screaming into the wilderness. The rack and the thumbscrew
are applied. Human nature is remorseless.' (Page 108).
Through this quote, the reader is able to see the way in which Septimus' thoughts are portrayed. The
thoughts of Septimus show him to be a helpless victim. When understanding the way Septimus is
being treated by the doctor, the reader can not help but feel sympathy for him. Woolf's use of stream
of consciousness is that of cautiousness and delicacy. In 'The Hours' Richard, a gay poet dying of
AIDS is Septimus' mirror

The most apparent similarity between these two films is that both films revolve around the daily
lives of the main characters.
The main characters, Charlie and Mr. bean, in The Kid and Mr. Bean – The Ultimate Disaster Movie
respectively, both have child–like qualities, and the tendency to be rather mischievous. Mr. Bean is
naive and self–centered, sometimes to the extent of becoming somewhat mean. Despite his
considerable age, he still sleeps cuddled up with his teddy bear. Nothing is sacred to him, and he

environment. Being release in 1997 it is a light–hearted satire of how the more conservative English
society reacts to and attempt to adapt to rapidly changing international standards and the shifts in
power.
The main difference of these two movies is that The Kid aims to bring some cheer to its audiences'
hearts by showing how joy can still be found in the gloomiest conditions (as depicted in the daily
lives of Charlie and the child he has adopted) and also to reflect the state of the society while Mr.
Bean – The Ultimate Disaster Movie seeks to bring some comic relief into the highly stressful
lifestyle of the modern–day individual, by actually letting them laugh at a highly exaggerated, and
therefore comic, version of 'themselves'.
As mentioned earlier, the era in which Charlie Chaplin's The Kid was made did not allow for colour
or sound to be incorporated into its production. Being disadvantaged in this area, the actors in the
film had to make up for it by emphasizing on facial expressions and body movements, in order to
express thoughts and emotions, and also to portray certain unique mannerisms and character traits of
the various characters in the story. Modern–day audiences who are unaccustomed to this form of
acting might feel uncomfortable viewing films from the silent era, because the actors may seem to

The Great Divide By John Woolf And Forster 's ' Howard 's...

The Great Divide
There were several prevailing thoughts towards connections present during the time in England on
the cusp of High Modernism. The importance of connections with others was one that was
specifically addressed in much of the literature. E.M. Forster even highlighted the idea in his novel
"Howard's End" with the epigraph "only connect". The idea supports the notion that, in order for a
society to survive and thrive, some degree of connection must be adequately maintained. Yet,
through the stratification of social classes in England at the time, there was little social connection
being preserved. To address the issue, authors like Virginia Woolf and Forster included connection
as a prominent theme in their works. Both Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" and Forster's "Howard's End"
address connection through their characters as well as geographical locations. In each of these
stories, the underlying theme of connecting highlights the characters' struggles to "only connect".
It would seem as if Forster is urging connection by illustrating that, without some degree of
connecting, social classes would remain stratified and society would fall into utter ruin. Through the
intermingling of characters in "Howard's End", Forster suggests that connecting in such a way is
progress. He further advocates and suggests that progress should be presented as a positive thing,
and, in order for a society to flourish, connections between the

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Never Let Me Go is about a thirty one year old woman named Kathy H. Kathy is a carer for donors
and she travels from care center to care center. She talks about her childhood at Hailsham and her
childhood friends, mostly Ruth and Tommy, and the adventures she experienced. At the end of the
book, we learn that Kathy lives in a world where her schoolmates and her are clones that are made
for donating organs until they die or "complete." They accept this fate without questioning it. Never
Let Me Go takes place in England during the later 1990s. The clones spend the first 16 years of their
life in Hailsham. They learn everything they need to know like English, science, music, history and
math. However, they never mention Hailsham's address or what city the school is located in. The
school is a hidden gem and Kathy says "Driving around the country now, I still see things that will
remind me of Hailsham. I might pass the corner of a misty field, or see part of a large house in the
distance as I come down the side of a valley, even a particular arrangement of poplar trees up on a
hillside. Then I see it's impossible and I go on driving, my thoughts drifting on elsewhere." Kathy
could never find Hailsham. There were many majors events in Never Let Me Go. One major event
in Never Let Me Go is when Madam came to visit Hailsham. The children would create something
like a poem, story, or painting and Madame would collect the item and put into the gallery if it was

The Graduate and Plastics Essay example
The Graduate and Plastics
The Graduate is a 1967 film directed by Mike Nichols who won an Oscar for his direction. This hit
of the 60's focuses on the development and the maturing of the ultra–naïve college graduate
Benjamin Braddock. This movie is about "just one word...Plastics." Mr. McQuire sums up this entire
movie when he tells Ben that there is "a great future in plastics." In this film the relationships,
except the one between Ben and Elaine, are like plastic because they are not real, they are molded,
and they are artificial.

Robinson is the only one who recognizes the falsehood of the marriage. When Mr. Robinson
confronts Ben he tells him that he and his wife "are getting a divorce soon." Mr. Robinson acts as
though the affair is the only reason for the divorce, which may be true in his mind. We never know
the thoughts of Mr. Robinson he might truly love Mrs. Robinson but we can never know for certain.
Mr. Robinson, like Ben, is naïve to the world around him. He is in his own artificially created
world, a world made of plastic, created by plastic relationships.
When Ben is seduced by Mrs. Robinson he enters a world of plastic. Like plastic, this world is
capable of being shaped into the desired world of the manipulator. The manipulator in this instance
is the decadent and sardonic Mrs. Robinson. She holds the cards because she knows how to play the
game. Ben is young, naïve, and inexperienced. Mrs. Robinson spots these characteristics and
uses them to get her way. When Ben questions their actions, she insults his masculinity by claiming
this is his "first time" which leads to their first sexual encounter. Mrs. Robinson knows how to
control him so that he does take part in this affair because at the moment all she wants is him. I don't
think that Ben has any idea what he is doing; it is almost as though he has nothing better to do than
to have an affair with Mrs.

characters by emphasizing their social roles in the England society. Their portrayals of the characters
suggest that they are critical of the upper–class' factitious lifestyles. Members of England's
social/economic upper–class in Woolf's, Austen's, and Wilde's literary works are distinguished by
their lifestyles. In Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, the upper–class appear to have a simple and comfortable
life. One of Woolf's focuses of the upper–class' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Austen states that "the man and one of the maids were sent off immediately into Devonshire"
(Austen 21), she indicates that the Dashwood's servants perform all of their household duties. The
upper–class women spend their leisure time attending private balls and parties hosted by the elite,
whom they also mingle and journey with. When Austen says that Lady Middleton "had the
advantage of being able to spoil her children all the year round" (Austen 25), she suggests that the
upper–class live a luxurious lifestyle because they are able to indulge in whatever their heart desires.
In Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, he describes the lives of the upper–class by detailing their
pleasurable lifestyle. Much like the upper–class' lifestyle in Mrs. Dalloway and Sense and
Sensibility, their lifestyle include attending social gatherings and upholding their outer appearances
in high esteem. Wilde notes that the upper–class like to associate themselves with people of the
same social importance. Lord Henry's statement that "there is only one thing in the world worse than
being talked about, and that is not being talked about" (Wilde 4), implies that maintaining their
social importance in the society was a daily responsibility for the upper–class. Lady Narborough,
much like Clarissa in Mrs. Dalloway, does not have a profession. Therefore, in her spare time she
"devoted herself now to the pleasures of French fiction, French cookery, and French espirit when
she could get it"

The Theme of Loneliness in I Am the King of the Castle Essay
The novel "I am the King of the Castle" clearly explores the themes of loneliness, sadness and
depression in its plot. All of the main characters have difficulties with relationships and end up
facing depressive moments and experiences, some insignificant but some crucial and terrifying.
Joseph Hooper (father), Edmund Hooper (son) and Charles Kingshaw are three characters showing
explicit loneliness almost throughout the whole novel. Their loneliness is shown by several reasons
and caused by a large number of factors, most involving family issues.
Joseph Hooper's loneliness is caused mainly by his everyday lifestyle and habits. The loss of his
wife made him deserted and very distant from his own son, Edmund Hooper. He is ... Show more

When he says to Miss
Kingshaw " I am a lonely man" right after he meets her, we can immediately spot his sexual urge.
Joseph Hooper is a portrait of failure. His lack of action towards his son and Miss Kingshaw shows
he is a very reserved guy, but actually this is not the way he wanted to be. His fears of being rejected
and abandoned control him even though on the inside he wants to take action. He lacks confidence.
We can see his deficiency towards Edmund when instead of controling him and punishing after a
fight he thinks to himslef "Perhaps I should strike him. Perhaps it is very foolish to let him get the
upper hand."
Edmund, even when he feels sad, rejects intimacy with Mr Hooper when he says "It is fine, I am all
right" after his father questions him about his state , pushing there relationship further away. He
competes with his own son which demonstrates weakness.
Charles Kingshaw is the son of Helena Kingshaw. He has lost his father and is also not close to his
mother at all. She tries to educate him but in a very superficial way and has inability to understand
him. It even seems as if it is an obligation of her part and her life is more important than any other
thing. Kingshaw hates everything at Warnings at his first impressions. His mom doesen't have any
proper affection for him and dosen't even notice he hates Warnings and really suffers there. He

Mrs. Dalloway, By Virginia Woolf
During World War One, many societal norms were disrupted and thrown aside. Everything was
displaced, including gender roles. With people dying in trenches everyday, a woman's place in the
kitchen became a secondary concern. World War One was a time of progressive change–however,
this change was only temporary. Both One of Ours, written by Willa Cather, and Mrs. Dalloway,
written by Virginia Woolf, take place during this era. Despite being set during a time of supposed
progress for women's rights, the roles that women are expected to fulfill in these texts are still
oppressive.Examining these novels, it becomes apparent that the roles of women did not change as a
result of the war. In fact, Enid, in One of Ours, and Mrs. Dalloway, in Mrs. ... Show more content on

The men returned home and soon returned to their original jobs. Marsha Gordon further writes,
"Once again using the ploys of patriotism, women were expected to return to pre–war standards for
women's labour without questioning the patriarchal ideology behind this assumption" (85). The
progress of women's rights ended abruptly when the soldiers came back to resume their old lives.
Progressively, the main thing to come out of World War One for women was the passing of the 19th
Amendment in 1920, three years after World War One (Hughes, 1). It wasn't until World War Two
that women 's roles truly became redefined.
In the novel One of Ours, Enid Wheeler is a headstrong and determined character, going against
women 's traditional roles during the early 1900s. Early on in One of Ours, Enid shows that she does
not uphold the traditional values forced on many women. For instance, when a thunderstorm appears
while Enid and Claude are driving, Claude stops, wanting to wait out the storm. Enid takes the
driver's seat from Claude and maneuvers them through the storm (111–114). Enid is not afraid to
step up and assume a position of authority. Critic Ryan M., writer of "No Woman's Land: Gender in
Willa Cather's One of Ours," writes that "Enid assumes the active male role, intruding herself into
his sickroom, courting him with flowers, beating him at chess"(page ?). By actively seeking Claude
out, whether as a friend or for romantic interest, Enid is

What Is The Journey To The Murder Of Drr. Orwell's Murder?
I walked into the huge mansion unaware of what event would happen that night. When I walked in,
there was a ballroom to the right and a conservatory to my left. As I walked to the dining room, I
saw a kitchen, when I got there I ate and laid down on the couch. When I got up I went to the
kitchen where I found Mr. Boddy dead on the floor with a gash on his head and a candle stick beside
him. I then warned the others that Mr. Boddy was murdered when I told them everyone but Mrs.
Peacock was shocked.
I then said ¨One of the people among us was a killer or someone else was in the house.¨
We then split up Col. Mustard and I, miss Scarlet and Mrs. Peacock, and Prof. Plum went by himself
because Dr. Orchid was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I unlocked the door and waited, I could hear miss Scarlet on one side and Mrs. Peacock on the other.
I unlocked the door with the trap, but kept the other locked. When Mrs. peacock opened the door,
she stepped in my trap and got hung by her feet. When that happened, she let go of her gun so I
picked it up and shut the door back and locked it. Miss Scarlet was hitting the door knob with a
wrench. I then decided to run out the other door and hid in the dining room with my pistol at the
ready.
I locked the door and called the cops, but when I hung the phone up the lights went out and miss
Scarlet started banging on the door. One of the cops got in the house, but miss Scarlet murdered him
and took away his gun. She shot the lock off the door and I ran out the other door. I knew I would
have to fight my way out. I was on my way to the library with miss Scarlet hot on my tail. I fell to
the ground and miss Scarlet tried to shoot, but when she pulled the trigger the gun went click. She
was out of ammo I took the opportunity and shot her and ran to the cops with a cut and a bruise on
my face I sprinted to the police department and told them the story. The head police followed me
back when we got there we could not find miss Scarlet, but we found a blood trail, I must have hit
her in the leg.
We went to the ballroom where I set the trap but the trap was cut down and Mrs. Peacock was gone.

Christmas Eve
Christmas is magical in the eyes of a child. At least, that's how it was for me. Every year, as the
month of December rolled around, the lights were strung and the trees were set up, I sent my letter
out with a hopeful heart that Santa would make an appearance on my doorstep on Christmas Eve.
The December of 2008 was the year that I wished for an electric scooter. I mailed my wish list to
Santa, knowing he would prevail and deliver that Razor electric scooter with a hand brake and fat
tires. Christmas morning was perfect! Santa had brought me a plum colored, shiny, and fully
charged electric scooter and my younger sister, Olivia, a hot pink one. They were perched on their
small silver kickstands in front of our eight foot tree that was weighed down with years worth of
homemade and souvenir ornaments. The scooters were free of a box or wrapping, just how Santa
always brought the gifts. As soon as the all of the presents were ripped open and breakfast eaten, I
pranced outside to test out my new ride. It was a crisp, wintry morning with gray skies. I cruised
back and forth on the scooter in front of my house for hours, accelerating on the uphills and coasting
on the downhills with the cold wind blowing through my tangled hair and my nose turning pink
from the low temperatures. It was my absolute favorite present. Fast forward a few days, the
Saturday following Christmas, and I was hiking up the red clay hill that began to incline as soon as
you stepped off of our back

Parallel Experiences Of Three Troubled Women In...

  • 1. Parallel Experiences of Three Troubled Women in... Parallel Experiences of Three Troubled Women in Cunningham's, The Hours According to Chronicles magazine, "Woolf was undeniably a brilliant writer." Woolf's work of Mrs. Dalloway was read by fifteen–year–old Michael Cunningham in order to impress an older girl in school. As he stated, "the book really knocked me out." Once older, Cunningham wanted to write about Mrs. Dalloway, but thought not too many people would want to read a book about reading a book. He then thought he might want to read a book about reading the right book. Hence, The Hours was written. Cunningham would incorporate Mrs. Dalloway into "a book about reading a book." The Hours weaves through three woman's lives. As the novel unfolds, it shows that these three women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The final narrative deals with Clarissa Vaughn. Clarissa lives in a Manhattan apartment in the 1990s with her 19 year old daughter and lesbian lover. She is overwhelmed with planning a party for a local poet whom she is the publisher. The local poet, Richard, once had a relationship with Clarissa, but is now a dying homosexual with AIDS. When I look up the meaning of metaphors in Webster it says "a figure of speech in which a work for one idea or thing is used in place of another to suggest a likeness between them." The Hours by Michael Cunningham is enriched with many complex metaphors. While intertwining three different woman's lives, Cunningham uses a wide range of metaphors to help mean something in one story and tie into the next woman's story. Using deconstructive interpretation to investigate these strategically placed metaphors can be difficult and exciting, yet challenging. The flow of the novel starts as Woolf finds the opening line of her new novel: "Mrs. Dalloway decided she would buy the flowers herself." The flowers would proof an important metaphor in the book. This thought of buying the flowers herself would link Woolf and Clarissa. Clarissa states the same words to her lover in preparing for Richard's party. And yet the flowers would reappear in Laura Browns life as her husband buys flowers for his own birthday. Flowers that normally represent life and color ironically represent sadness and loneliness in this novel. Death hangs over this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Adaptations of Virginia Wolfe Essay In approaching a topic such as adaptations, one has to first understand what exactly adaptation means and how it is applied to such works to get the product the "adapter" is trying to create and for what reasons they are "adapting" for. The American Heritage Dictionary defines Adaptation as the following: "1(a). The act for process of adapting. 1(b). The state of being adapted. 2. A composition recast into a new form: "The play is an adaptation of a short novel." 3. An alteration or adjustment by which a species or individual improves its condition in relationship to its environment. (10)" The definition that we'll be looking at closely is the second one; "a composition recast into a new form." The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Woolf takes the reader on a psychological roller coaster with flashbacks to Mrs. Dalloway's' life, specifically her teen–age to college years. She shows us all of the decisions Dalloway had to make and how those decisions had shaped her life. Clarissa Dalloway had chosen a life that would be safe for her, by marrying well and having a child, by living the proper political life. Throughout the novel, Clarissa thinks back onto how she could have had a life of sexual freedom and excitement with Richard, her ex–lover from her college years. Of course this is all put into play by the arrival of him from India, because she hadn't seen him in a very long time. All of these occurrences and flashbacks just add to Clarissa's growing–depression that she barely is able to hold onto in the story. The most interesting and most significant aspect of Mrs. Dalloway is that it takes place in one day, which is what Cunningham and Daldry built their book and movie off of. The idea of telling a story of a woman's thoughts in one day is an amazing one because it is so intrinsic and specific that going past one day would take forever to divulge and digest. One of the most important parts of Mrs. Dalloway is the relationship between Septimus and Clarissa. Woolf uses Septimus, a war veteran who's got shell shock, as the alternate persona to Clarissa. Summary On The Episode ( 3-4 Sentences ) Chapter Page # Summary of the Episode (3–4 sentences) Relevance/Analysis (3–5 sentences that answer 1 or more of the guiding criteria) Significant Quotation (supports character development) Quote Page # Chapter 6 Pages 46–47 Jane starts a conversation with Helen, a student who was flogged without reason. She can't understand why Helen would bear the pain and not rebel. Jane's rebellious nature can be seen in this passage. She has a hostility towards violent authority. This is most likely caused by her time spent at the Reeds where she was constantly treated without respect. "'And if I were in your place I should dislike her; I should resist her. If she struck me with that rod, I should get it from her hand; I should break it under her nose.'" Page 46 Chapter 17 Page 151 For the first time, Jane sees Miss Ingram, observing her closely. She realizes that Miss Ingram seems to feel that she is better than everyone else. Jane doesn't seem to have many good feelings towards Miss Ingram. Within this passage, it becomes obvious that Miss Ingram is exceedingly haughty. She boasts of her knowledge subtly, and loves to make herself seem superior to others. She is always seeking to seem better than everyone else whether knowledge–wise or skill–wise. "It was not, however, so saturnine a pride! She laughed continually; her laugh was satirical, and so was the habitual expression of her arched and haughty lip. Genius is said to be self–conscious. I cannot tell whether Miss Ingram was a ... • 13. Essay Growing Up, Staying Young Growing Up, Staying Young I had trouble sleeping that night. The peaceful, rhythmic breathing of my younger sister across the room could not calm me as I lay under the covers in the dark, listening for the heavy footsteps of an elderly man sneaking through the downstairs floor of my house. With one hand firmly choking Red Blankie, I reached with the other to turn the alarm clock on my bedstand toward me. The fluorescent red digits whispered 12:03 in the still, black room. Perhaps he will come soon. Delicate tingles danced up my arms, as I froze like a nervous cat, ears up, ready and alert. I rehearsed the carefully planned sequence of events in my head. As a young child, I clung to this inspirational message and ran with it to millions of marvelous places in my mind. I believed in everything, from my "invisible" collie Fluffy to Santa Claus, Rudolf, and the rest of the reindeer. Everything I saw and heard and read sang to me, inspired me, and thrilled me. When my mom wouldn't let me have a puppy, Fluffy came into my life. She was my imaginary collie, every bit as real as the dogs I saw climbing against the scratched windows of the mall pet shops. I took her for walks around my back yard, fed her juicy crimson mulberries from our tree, and taught her to rescue children from burning buildings, like Lassie did on Nickelodeon. My time with Fluffy was limited, however, when I found a job in the restaurant business. As the owner, waiter, and cook, I spent many hours in the red and yellow playhouse in my basement taking orders from hungry customers and preparing exotic foods for their culinary pleasure. My best friend Jenny joined me in many of my childhood adventures. Silence of the Lambs and Mr. Brooks Essay Unit 2: Week 2 – Reader Response – Assignment 1 Juan Luna Park University Serial Killers as Heroes in Popular Culture LE 300J Ms. Silvia Kofler November 2, 2012 Unit 2: Week 2 – Reader Response – Assignment 1 A serial killer could be dining, sitting, or even living next to you at this very moment. Most killers offer little to no obvious clues that will lead anyone to detect their often secretive, undercover actions. I ask myself, "How can we be so naive to these types of people?" Serial killers amongst us are often well educated, portray an All–American image, yet have a psychotic side to them. First, most serial killers are often well educated. In "Natural Born Celebrities: Serial Killers in American Culture," serial killers are defined as clean cut, normal, All–American people. Some interviewees shared in chapter five state that the reason why it takes so long for the culprits to be apprehended is attributed to the ability to carry on with a normal life. One even offered that in one instance, his victim actually thought he was joking when he kidnapped her to eventually murder her. In "Mr. Brooks," Earl again is a very successful person. He is an ordinary, suit wearing, clean shaven, clean cut, successful Portland, Oregon businessman. I imagine that his killing addiction would shock even his closest, everyday coworkers. Hannibal Lecter is a former psychiatrist. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of schooling that he endured and numerous certifications, both federal and state, that he must have attained. Yet, he did not like arrogant and obnoxious people, therefore, he murdered them. Despite being well educated and portraying an All–American image, serial killers have a psychotic side to them. Hannibal Lecter showed this side of him when he killed two prison guards. Not only did he murder them but he ate some of their body parts and even carved out the face of one of them to use as a way of disguising himself when he escaped from prison. This is the question that has vexed managers and business leaders for decades. According to Michael Porter, the answer lies in how technology is used. In this Case Study Report, Team 3 discusses how Mrs. Fields, Inc. leveraged technology for strategic positioning. • 25. What Does Mr Hooper Mean When He Continues To Wear The... Views on this essay range from the American Romanticism characteristics, the symbolisms, and the levels of the parable. For the example of the American romanticism characters in this story, it is only portrayed to be the minister himself, Mr. Hooper. "The minister lived his life a man apart from men, shunned in their health and joy, but ever summoned to their aid in mortal anguish" (Hawthorne 130). As explained by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the minister uses the black veil as a sort of a cover up for his "secret sin" so they say that is what he may be hiding. Throughout the story, Hawthorne shows more and more of Mr. Hooper being the main protagonist, but also the main American Romanticism character in the story. "Hooper continues to wear the veil through the rest of the day's duties, including a funeral, at which the veil seems an "appropriate emblem," and a wedding service, at which it decidedly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hawthorne includes three levels of parable to help understand the symbolism behind Hooper and why he wears the black veil. The first level would be considered to be that the minister is carrying or in other words covering the sins of others. Just as Jesus Christ died for our sins. The next level would be that you cannot hide your secret sins from anyone not even the all ruling, all powerful God. Lastly, the third one would be that the sin of humanity is the greatest sin which society hides and ignores. "What, but the mystery which it obscurely typifies has made this piece of crepe so awful? When the friend shows his inmost heart to his friend; the lover to his best beloved; when man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his creator, loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his in; then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I have lived, and die! • 29. Mrs. Dalloway I. Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf, was published on May 14, 1925 in London, England. The novel follows Clarissa Dalloway and a variety of other characters throughout the span of one day in their lives in 1923 London. Woolf utilizes a narrative method of writing. With the novel's structure, the narrator possesses the ability to move inside of a character's mind and compose her thoughts and emotions immediately as events occur throughout the day. The novel's main character, Clarissa, is a middle–aged woman who belongs to the upper–middle class in society and is well–married to a Member of Parliament–Richard Dalloway. Clarissa's day is full of arrangements for a dinner party she plans to host that evening. During the novel, numerous other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rather than hold lengthy conversations between characters, she frequently writes only of small talk and leaves more serious topics to be recited in an individual's exclusive thoughts. One of her purposes in writing the novel is to expose the hypocrisy of society. The characters in the novel range from eccentric acquaintances to extravagant lords and ladies to vindictive tutors to suicidal veterans. One example of this theme occurs when Rezia and Septimus attempt to settle down in the park. When the airplane soars overhead, she writes, "Tears ran down his cheeks (Woolf 21)." While one may mistake this as joy or, at worst, sorrow over the recent war, Woolf gives the reality of the action beneath the surface, stating, "They are signaling to me... this exquisite beauty... but he would not go mad. He would see no more (21)." While Septimus dwindles on the brink of insanity, Rezia chatters away about nature, unaware of the mess resting beside her. Septimus portrays the appearance of one man yet expresses an entirely new persona through his contemplations. Another instance of the theme transpires when Miss Kilman and Clarissa wait for Elizabeth to retrieve her gloves before going shopping. Clarissa and Kilman both make attempts at small talk. However, both give their attentions to a mutual disgust of each other. Clarissa simply asks if Kilman is taking Elizabeth to the stores. Kilman replies dryly, but in ... Elizabeth Conner 9 November 2017 ENGL–4010–001 Professor Westover Virginia Woolf: Gone to the Lighthouse, Never to Return Many authors inject a little bit of their personalities and lives into their writing, making it more relatable to their readers and more marketable to publishers. However, depending on the work, it can sometimes be difficult to determine what is inspired by real life and what is merely fiction. Therefore how important an author's biography is to a story can also be hard to understand. Without knowing about the author, would certain key points be missed, or would the story still carry the same message and make just as much sense? On the flipside, could information about the author cause the reader to look for things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1903, when Woolf was in her very early twenties, her other half–brother George began to sexually abuse her, sliding into bed with her against her will, and almost never leaving her alone. Shortly after, she tried to commit suicide by jumping out a window, but it was too low to kill her (Whitworth, 9–10). Virginia met Leonard Woolf briefly in 1904, and after a long and tumultuous courtship plagued by doubt and Virginia's mental illness, they were married on August 10th, 1912 (Whitworth, 15–17). In 1913, she took a very large dose of sleeping medication, hoping to kill herself. Before she was dead, however, she was found and her stomach pumped, saving her life (Whitworth, 17–18). All of these events shaped her life and writing, but certain aspects of what she experienced really seem to affect how a reader could interpret Mrs. Dalloway. One of the most important aspects of Woolf's novel which reflects real life is the suicide of Septimus Smith. Throughout the novel, Septimus is portrayed as a very disturbed man, having just come back from the war with post traumatic stress disorder which doctors are unable, or perhaps unwilling, to acknowledge. Therefore, Septimus has hallucinations, night terrors, and is generally feeling so miserable that he decides to kill himself by jumping out of a window onto the street below (Woolf, 43–49, 76–79). Transitions of place, time, and character are key to the storytelling in Salman Rushdie's "Midnight's Children" and Virginia Woolfe's "Mrs. Dalloway". Rushdie explores the History, Nationalism and Hybridism of the nation of India after they became independent of Great Britain. Woolfe comments heavily on English society more through her description of her characters, and the weaving of time and place is an effective way to telling the stories of her characters as we follow them through a single day. This essay will compare in three passages from "Midnight's Children" the effectiveness of transitioning from place and time to the way Woolfe did so in "Mrs. Dalloway". Furthermore, it will explore why each passage is a good demonstration of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This parallels the narrative structure of the novel as being circular, discontinuous and digressive. The same can easily be said for Mrs Dalloway as the novel almost jarringly weaves through many points of view. This fragmentation appropriates the concept of history in "Midnight's Children", which was developed by colonizers. History works for a particular class of ideology, and therefore it will be contaminated, oblique and subjective. In Mrs. Dalloway the characters themselves are subjective commentaries on English society, and they have been subjectively contaminated by Woolfe's opinions of who they represent. The functionality of history is grounded in the simple assumption that life is shaped like a story. Whereas Woolfe admittedly wrote in an experimental style that was more of a slice of life than a traditionally shaped story with a beginning, middle, and end. For Saleem, who is "buffeted by too much history", it is his memory which creates his own history. The same is true of everyone in "Mrs. Dalloway". "Memory, as well as fruit, is being saved from the corruption of the clocks". This quote could have easily been in Mrs. Dalloway, particularly when Clarissa reacted to the suicide of Septimus and seemed to fear the aging brought on by ticking clocks. Yet, for Rushdie, it is not based on the universal empty time that has been conceptualized by the colonizers. Notions of time and space are integrated into both novels. The novel critiques ... An analysis on the surface of the story is one day Mr. Hooper minister of a congregation in Milford, MA, a small settlement of puritans, working hard just to sustain life. When the sexton tolls the bell Mr. Hooper comes out as usual but wearing a black veil. In my opinion this shows that Mr. Hooper is showing that he committed a sin and he wear the black veil as a way to say everyone wears a mask. This means the parishioners are judge full and can not accept Mr. Hooper for wearing the black veil as normal wear. I think the symbolism that Hawthorne tries to show is the corpse is now an angel and is shuddering toward the sin that Mr. Hooper committed when it sees his face, that's why Mr. Hooper stand straight to cover himself with the veil once again. "That night, the handsomest couple of Milford village were to be joined in wedlock." The wedding in the story, just like the funeral, has a deeper meaning to the details and symbols of MBV. Mr. Hooper arrives to the wedding, people thinking he took off the veil, though they were mistaken. "When mister Hooper came, the first thing their eyes rested upon was the same horrible black veil." People thought that maybe he would have taken off the black veil after the funeral, but they were just completely confused when he showed up with it on. There was a sharp whistling noise that sounded like Frances was sucking air between the gaps of her front teeth. Only when Mrs. Tuttle had gone to fetch the potatoes did Frances speak. "Ellie, come over to the rug," she said. "Stand behind that chair, so I can see you." She did as she was told, placing her hands behind her back and forcing herself to look at the odious visage of her stepmother. A good example of this is with the quote "'Sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of [another]...There are just some kind of men...who're so busy worrying about the next world they've never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results.'" (pg. 60). This quote, as a stand–alone, gets gears turning, but once it's paired with the rest of the book, it gives an entirely new perspective on a problem that so many people ignore or don't notice. Her book is completely littered with examples that back up this quote and it's intended meaning. A few examples of this is when the foot–washers call Miss Maudie and her flowers a sin, when the foot–washers quote scripture to Miss Maudie and she quotes some right back, when Mrs. Farrow talks about the blacks as if they are wild animals, when Mrs. Merriweather talks about the cooks and field hands grumbling after Tom's Trials and when Jem is explaining to Dill why Dolphus Raymond is somewhat of a town outcast. Some of the extremely devout people (the foot–washers for example), tend to be more worried about the next life instead of enjoying the one they currently have. By preferring to be inside reading the Bible instead of outdoors enjoying life and wanting others to do the same, they show how the Bible gives the ability to be scrutinized less by peers. But ... In the story, "The Minister's Black Veil ", A minister named Mr. Hooper comes to church with a black veil on his face. The people of the village were confused and curious on why he was wearing the veil. Although, the question is, does Mr. Hooper wear the veil because of his own "secret sins" or is he bearing the sins of the people? In my opinion, I think he wears the veil because of his secret sins. First of all, I imagine that Mr. Hooper wears the veil for his own personal sins for many reasons. For an example, the first article says, "the sin that Mr. Hooper admonished himself over was the temptation or dalliance with a female.". Meaning, that Mr. Hooper feels ... My first Director was more of an autocratic leader "who tends to centralize authority and derive power from position, control of rewards, and coercion" (Daft, 2015). Conversely, my second and current Director is a democratic leader who "delegates authority to others, encourages participation, relies on subordinates' knowledge for completion of tasks, and depends on subordinates respect for influence" (Daft, 2015). It 's hard to believe in this day and age with so many opportunities for woman to become successful in a carer and contribute to the working society that before the First World War only ninety years ago marriage meant the end of that chance for so many young people. By looking at both short films and film depictions, I want to show the journey of how the Labour industry has changed from being a majority lead male dominated working environment with the social status for woman changing from those who are either unmarried or in poor lower–class families in domestic feminine held jobs, to those of married woman, in a well–to–do family made to give up chances of education and carer for themselves, married off to become leisurely ladies of the house and made to stay home with the children while there husband became the sole earner. Regardless of her social status, most woman surrendered her rights from the day she married but if on the off chance she was able to work in one of these domestic arenas such as the textile and clothing industry the jobs would have been of little satisfaction and that of a low wage. This was to be true of a time in Victorian England, but in 1895 French director Louis Lumiẻre created a short black and white silent documentary that showed a single screen of French workers in Lyon leaving the Lumiẻre factory called "Workers ... The novels both share an important theme of mental health. The circumstances of mental health are commonly sympathetic, and empathetic. The characters Septimus and Clarissa in 'Mrs. Dalloway' and Richard, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolf in 'The Hours' show the strongest symbols for this theme. Most of the problems and treatments these characters face are in direct result of the age they live in. Both novels express a relationship between era, illnesses and treatments. (Page 110). Woolf's own experiences could be reflected off of those of Bradshaw's thoughts. Woolf portrays doctors to be useless. The delusions of Septimus are shown through Woolf's characteristic stream of consciousness style. 'Once you fall, Septimus repeated to himself, human nature is on you. Holmes and Bradshaw are on you. They scour the desert. They fly screaming into the wilderness. The rack and the thumbscrew are applied. Human nature is remorseless.' (Page 108). Through this quote, the reader is able to see the way in which Septimus' thoughts are portrayed. The thoughts of Septimus show him to be a helpless victim. When understanding the way Septimus is being treated by the doctor, the reader can not help but feel sympathy for him. Woolf's use of stream of consciousness is that of cautiousness and delicacy. The main difference of these two movies is that The Kid aims to bring some cheer to its audiences' hearts by showing how joy can still be found in the gloomiest conditions (as depicted in the daily lives of Charlie and the child he has adopted) and also to reflect the state of the society while Mr. Bean – The Ultimate Disaster Movie seeks to bring some comic relief into the highly stressful lifestyle of the modern–day individual, by actually letting them laugh at a highly exaggerated, and therefore comic, version of 'themselves'. • 127. The Great Divide By John Woolf And Forster 's ' Howard 's... Nashandra M. Jolley ENG 4425 Ross 11 November, 2015 The Great Divide There were several prevailing thoughts towards connections present during the time in England on the cusp of High Modernism. The importance of connections with others was one that was specifically addressed in much of the literature. E.M. Forster even highlighted the idea in his novel "Howard's End" with the epigraph "only connect". The idea supports the notion that, in order for a society to survive and thrive, some degree of connection must be adequately maintained. Yet, through the stratification of social classes in England at the time, there was little social connection being preserved. To address the issue, authors like Virginia Woolf and Forster included connection as a prominent theme in their works. Both Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" and Forster's "Howard's End" address connection through their characters as well as geographical locations. In each of these stories, the underlying theme of connecting highlights the characters' struggles to "only connect". It would seem as if Forster is urging connection by illustrating that, without some degree of connecting, social classes would remain stratified and society would fall into utter ruin. Through the intermingling of characters in "Howard's End", Forster suggests that connecting in such a way is progress. He further advocates and suggests that progress should be presented as a positive thing, and, in order for a society to flourish, connections between the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The loss of his wife made him deserted and very distant from his own son, Edmund Hooper. He is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he says to Miss Kingshaw " I am a lonely man" right after he meets her, we can immediately spot his sexual urge. Joseph Hooper is a portrait of failure. His lack of action towards his son and Miss Kingshaw shows he is a very reserved guy, but actually this is not the way he wanted to be. His fears of being rejected and abandoned control him even though on the inside he wants to take action. He lacks confidence. We can see his deficiency towards Edmund when instead of controling him and punishing after a fight he thinks to himslef "Perhaps I should strike him. Perhaps it is very foolish to let him get the upper hand." Edmund, even when he feels sad, rejects intimacy with Mr Hooper when he says "It is fine, I am all right" after his father questions him about his state , pushing there relationship further away. He competes with his own son which demonstrates weakness. Charles Kingshaw is the son of Helena Kingshaw. He has lost his father and is also not close to his mother at all. She tries to educate him but in a very superficial way and has inability to understand him. It even seems as if it is an obligation of her part and her life is more important than any other thing. Kingshaw hates everything at Warnings at his first impressions. His mom doesen't have any proper affection for him and dosen't even notice he hates Warnings and really suffers there. He ... • 147. Mrs. Dalloway, By Virginia Woolf During World War One, many societal norms were disrupted and thrown aside. Everything was displaced, including gender roles. With people dying in trenches everyday, a woman's place in the kitchen became a secondary concern. World War One was a time of progressive change–however, this change was only temporary. Both One of Ours, written by Willa Cather, and Mrs. Dalloway, written by Virginia Woolf, take place during this era. Despite being set during a time of supposed progress for women's rights, the roles that women are expected to fulfill in these texts are still oppressive.Examining these novels, it becomes apparent that the roles of women did not change as a result of the war. In fact, Enid, in One of Ours, and Mrs. Dalloway, in Mrs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The men returned home and soon returned to their original jobs. Marsha Gordon further writes, "Once again using the ploys of patriotism, women were expected to return to pre–war standards for women's labour without questioning the patriarchal ideology behind this assumption" (85). The progress of women's rights ended abruptly when the soldiers came back to resume their old lives. Progressively, the main thing to come out of World War One for women was the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920, three years after World War One (Hughes, 1). It wasn't until World War Two that women 's roles truly became redefined. In the novel One of Ours, Enid Wheeler is a headstrong and determined character, going against women 's traditional roles during the early 1900s. Early on in One of Ours, Enid shows that she does not uphold the traditional values forced on many women. For instance, when a thunderstorm appears while Enid and Claude are driving, Claude stops, wanting to wait out the storm. Enid takes the driver's seat from Claude and maneuvers them through the storm (111–114). Enid is not afraid to step up and assume a position of authority. Critic Ryan M., writer of "No Woman's Land: Gender in Willa Cather's One of Ours," writes that "Enid assumes the active male role, intruding herself into his sickroom, courting him with flowers, beating him at chess"(page ?). By actively seeking Claude out, whether as a friend or for romantic interest, Enid is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When I walked in, there was a ballroom to the right and a conservatory to my left. As I walked to the dining room, I saw a kitchen, when I got there I ate and laid down on the couch. When I got up I went to the kitchen where I found Mr. Boddy dead on the floor with a gash on his head and a candle stick beside him. I then warned the others that Mr. Boddy was murdered when I told them everyone but Mrs. Peacock was shocked. I then said ¨One of the people among us was a killer or someone else was in the house.¨ We then split up Col. Mustard and I, miss Scarlet and Mrs. Peacock, and Prof. Plum went by himself because Dr. Orchid was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I unlocked the door and waited, I could hear miss Scarlet on one side and Mrs. Peacock on the other. I unlocked the door with the trap, but kept the other locked. When Mrs. peacock opened the door, she stepped in my trap and got hung by her feet. When that happened, she let go of her gun so I picked it up and shut the door back and locked it. Miss Scarlet was hitting the door knob with a wrench. I then decided to run out the other door and hid in the dining room with my pistol at the ready. I locked the door and called the cops, but when I hung the phone up the lights went out and miss Scarlet started banging on the door. One of the cops got in the house, but miss Scarlet murdered him and took away his gun. She shot the lock off the door and I ran out the other door. I knew I would have to fight my way out. I was on my way to the library with miss Scarlet hot on my tail. I fell to the ground and miss Scarlet tried to shoot, but when she pulled the trigger the gun went click. She was out of ammo I took the opportunity and shot her and ran to the cops with a cut and a bruise on my face I sprinted to the police department and told them the story. The head police followed me back when we got there we could not find miss Scarlet, but we found a blood trail, I must have hit her in the leg. We went to the ballroom where I set the trap but the trap was cut down and Mrs. Peacock was gone. We searched the whole ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every year, as the month of December rolled around, the lights were strung and the trees were set up, I sent my letter out with a hopeful heart that Santa would make an appearance on my doorstep on Christmas Eve. The December of 2008 was the year that I wished for an electric scooter. I mailed my wish list to Santa, knowing he would prevail and deliver that Razor electric scooter with a hand brake and fat tires. Christmas morning was perfect! Santa had brought me a plum colored, shiny, and fully charged electric scooter and my younger sister, Olivia, a hot pink one. They were perched on their small silver kickstands in front of our eight foot tree that was weighed down with years worth of homemade and souvenir ornaments. The scooters were free of a box or wrapping, just how Santa always brought the gifts. As soon as the all of the presents were ripped open and breakfast eaten, I pranced outside to test out my new ride. It was a crisp, wintry morning with gray skies. I cruised back and forth on the scooter in front of my house for hours, accelerating on the uphills and coasting on the downhills with the cold wind blowing through my tangled hair and my nose turning pink from the low temperatures. It was my absolute favorite present. Fast forward a few days, the Saturday following Christmas, and I was hiking up the red clay hill that began to incline as soon as you stepped off of our back ...
