Industrial Capitalism
Where democratic principles and practices are not adhered to within an organization, then the
potential for one group or clique to dominate power exists. This was the case with the Teamsters
Union. History has shown in the United States, that when this occurs, other individuals or voices,
rarely have a say in the decision–making process (Summers, 637). This can be detrimental because a
bureaucracy is created as a result. This structure eliminates an organized opposition; therefore those
in power are secured to do what they want without anyone opposing them. If individuals in power
are vulnerable to believe they need the support of organized crime to ensure their hold on power,
corruption is sure to ensue. Likewise, corrupt union leaders enjoy ... Show more content on

Power can be defined as the ability to cause or prevent change. The structure of a labour union is
important, because power is channeled to decision makers through organizational structures. "Moral
power" can be defined as "the ability to cause or prevent change through appeals to fundamental
concepts of rightness, which will, of course, be relative to time, place, and circumstances"
(Marshall, 445). There is a theory involving the diminishing utility of power that states
organizations are most vulnerable to the types of power they are attempting to acquire or have lost
(Marshall, 447). By allowing organized crime to infiltrate, the union loses moral power and
therefore loses credibility when trying to bargain for improved or safer working conditions for its
members or when trying to draft an image of social justice. As mentioned in the previous paragraph,
if unions have the wrong leader in power, corruption is more likely to occur because of this lack of
moral power given by third parties. In essence, the organized crime incumbent is the "third party"
the corrupt union turns toward. However, this third party will not justify or impute moral values to
the betterment of the organization. While the leader of a union is to make business decisions based
on economic, political, or physical information, the benefit of a third party is that they will almost
always judge an issue on

I. Background information on industry and workers
A. Between the period of 1865–1900, industry exploded in growth
B. There were many contributors that included government action, labor unions, immigration, and
technological changes.
1. Government action tried to help the workers by decreasing corporations ' control over employees
2. Labor unions tried to increase benefits and make working easier
3. Immigration helped by having a cheap, abundant labor source for businesses to use
4. Technological changes both helped and hurt workers by making it easier to work but making it
harder by causing a need for skilled labor.
C. All of these affected workers, but in some more than others, however, labor unions and
technological changes had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
B. Inventions like the Bessemer process, railroads, and the production plant all affected jobs and the
economy.
C. The Bessemer process allowed steel to be created at a much faster rate.
1. This called for more workers in order to maximize production
(a) Most workers were immigrants that worked two 12–hour shifts, seven days a week.
2. The Bessemer process greatly affected the worker by providing more jobs, but at a lower wage,
lower benefits, and higher hours, a negative effect.
D. In the 1860 's, the government finally commissioned the first transcontinental railroad.
E. Then from the 1860 's to about 1893, four more transcontinental railroads were created.
1. These transcontinental railroads stimulated industry greatly, creating more jobs in both industry
and working on the rails.
F. The invention and development of the production plant affected the worker greatly.
1. There were now more jobs due to the openings in factories.
(a) Machines replaced skilled workers in factories
G. Technological changes often replaced workers, however, it often created more jobs in the long
run.
IV. Summarizing the effects of labor unions and technological changes
A. Both labor unions and technological changes greatly affected the Industrial worker in the period
of 1865–1900.
B. Labor unions tried to provide greater benefits for workers and mostly positively affected workers.

Labour Movement Vs Proletariat
Labor movement and proletariat were the results of Marx and Engels ideological thoughts. Their
vision of the society was a world where capitalism doesn't exist. They thought that the proletariat
arises because the capitalism using machines started to replace workers and killing competition of
middle class, usually with small business. Proletariat is the class of society that live by its labor.
They also thought that business should be owned by proletariat and private property shouldn't exist.
They describe capitalism as a brutal system that leave poor people with nothing. In contrast to the
theory of Marx and Engels, imperialism is based on the differences of people and the capabilities of
each of them being successful. Social Darwinism was

In America, sports are synonymous with popular American culture. Sports have ties to the
everyman, capitalism, and patriotism. However, according to Andrew Moore's article, "Opera of the
Proletariat: Rugby League, the Labour Movement and Working–Class Culture in New South Wales
and Queensland", across the ocean in Australia, there is a strong connection between the creation of
the Australian Rugby League and the Australian Labor Movement. This paper will analyze Moore's
claims regarding the connection between the Australian Rugby League and not only the Australian
Labor Movement, but socialist philosophy in general. Moore begins his paper in a chronological
manner, telling us of the history of Australian Rugby and Labour. Rather than beginning with any
thorough analysis, he begins by linking the Rugby League to the Labour Movements simply by
informing the reader of several League players who also had significant links to the Labour
Movement. Moore asserts that this linkage is not simply correlation, but rather causation when he
states that "Rugby league was part of the making of a labour life." (Moore, 57). Moore then
continues this point by informing the reader of more connections of labour union members with
sports, and shares several anecdotes such as "Pat Clancy, long term secretary of the Building
Workers ' Industrial Union, organised union meetings so that he would not miss radio broadcasts of
the South Sydney Rabbitohs ' games." (Moore, 57). After this

Role Of The Wto On Addressing Labour Standards
Appropriate role of the WTO in addressing labour standards
Introduction
The relationship between international trade and labour standards is a key issue today. The relation
defines the link between developing countries and advanced industrialized nations. International
enforcement of labour standards is justifiable from two frontiers of arguments. The first one opines
that "unfair" labour conditions and practices exist in many countries and trading partners and call for
the need to offset an occurrence through appropriate trade policy measures in a bid to level the
playing field (Elliott & Richard 2003, p. 67). The proponents of the argument include organized
social and labour activists. Secondly, other social activists contend that ... Show more content on

147). Such standards are aimed at enforcing the adherence to WTO agreements by trading countries
that have signed and ratified the WTO agreement. Most issues dealt with by the WTO derive from
previous trade negotiations such as the Uruguay Round (1986–1994). All measures are taken with
the view of raising standards of living and ensuring full employment (Brown 200, p. 971). To
achieve its objectives, it undertakes a series of trade liberalizing agreements reached on consensus
from the WTO 's members forming the General Council.
Labour standards under the World Trade Organization (WTO)
Labour Standards in the World Trade Organization refer to the binding rules forming part of the
principles and jurisprudence applicable within the rule making structures of the World Trade
Organization (WTO). The labour standards play a critical role within the WTO. Despite them being
a backbone in the WTO, they form a prominent issue facing the WTO hence generating academic
and economic debates (Rodrik 1997, p.37). The scope to which the WTO recognizes labour
standards is based on the principles established in Conventions of the International Labour
Organization (ILO), and renowned human rights treaties such as the International Bill of Human
Rights.
Core Labour Standards
The core labour standards are identified by the 'Declaration of the Fundamental Principles and
Rights at Work ' by the International Labour Organization (ILO). They are widely acknowledged for

Essay on Working Class
This article entitled The Honest Workingman and Workers' Control: The Experience of Toronto
Skilled Workers, 1860–1892 written by Gregory S. Kealey looks to better describe the practice of
three Toronto unions from the 1860's to the early 1890's and their struggles for their rights and
deserved wages in order to illustrate the strength these types of unions possess. This article
recognizes that there are industries where unions win, and still must rely on skilled labour. Many
times people hear the term 'industrialization' and think that all craft workers get blown away,
however this is not exactly the case as this article demonstrates. Kealey looks at three separate cases
in three separate industries to identify the significant variations ... Show more content on

Labour unions played a great role in the battle between the capitalist world and the labourers who
wanted their rights to stay intact. In the Toronto moulding department, the union's claim to control
was the central issue being discussed. Many attempts at strikes were mentioned resulting in major
struggles for the working class. Eventually, there industry wide agreements in stove foundries, but
until this the strength of the moulders depended solely on their skill and control of the work process
through their union. The Iron Moulders differed from the Coopers in that they maintained a high
level of workplace control into the twentieth century. This was mainly due to the strength of their
organization, but also relied on the slower introduction of machinery to replace physical workers in
this industry, and therefore the workers had time to perfect their craft before the machines arrived.
(Kealey, 1976) The third, and probably most supportive case given by Kealey is that of the Toronto
printer's industry and union, with their control of the shop floor demonstrating early union power.
These printers had a very strong tradition of craft pride and identified well with their work. It was
obvious that you had to be literate to be involved in printing, and therefore these printing trades
were very exclusive, and to belong you needed to show a great deal of intelligence and knowledge.
Because of this, printers in these

How Did Ben Chifley Influence The Labour Movement
"I try to think of the Labour movement, not as putting an extra sixpence into somebody's pocket, or
making somebody Prime Minister or Premier, but as a movement bringing something better to the
people, better standards of living, greater happiness to the mass of the people. We have a great
objective – the light on the hill – which we aim to reach by working for the betterment of mankind
not only here but anywhere we may give a helping hand."
This is but a short excerpt of Ben Chifley's famous 'Light on the Hill' speech in 1949, but it shows
the extent of his political aptitude and beliefs as a true believer in the Labour movement. He is best
recognised for his leadership in the Keynesian, interventionalist reconstruction of the Australian
economy following the Second World War and also his tenure as the architect of the Australian
welfare state since 1945. As such, it is highly evident Ben Chifley had a substantial impact on the
post–war Australian economy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

democratic socialism, the guiding philosophy of the Australian Labor party, which led him to

Apush Labor Union Dbq Essay
The 1800s is characterized with the rise of industrial America. As technological advances were
introduced to industry, unskilled labor also rose in accordance to the rise in factories. However, this
rise also introduced several labor unions such as the Knights of Labor, which organized a series of
protests and riots. The labor unions had good intentions, aiming to lower the average work hours for
workers, as well as increase their wages. However, their methods which involved riots and protests,
were altogether not effective, and ended up being detrimental to their cause. Between 1875 and
1900, labor unions surged and were temporarily successful; however, their methods would prove
detrimental to their cause overtime, leading to their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite being able to cause a small improvement in workers' pay and hours, labor unions ultimately
died out by the 1900s due to their methods. Unable to truly focus on the plight of skilled workers,
most labor unions instead focused on that of unskilled workers, pushing aside the skilled workers.
(Doc D). The actions of labor unions ended up being counterproductive, forcing companies to wage
war against the labor unions. These stricter contracts such as that of Western Union Telegraph
Company, forced workers to affiliate themselves against labor unions. (Doc E) One important thing
to note is that the workers' rights advocates were never able to coincide on one factor. As evidenced
in an illustration in 1887, labor unions had to compete with other movements such as socialism,
anarchism, and other labor unions. (Doc F). Because of this, the media, although recognizing the
labor union movement, began viewing the labor unions as dangerous entities. Although the initial
strikes such as the Wabash strike were successful, the ones that followed proved detrimental to the
movement, and caused the steady decline of the labor unions. Because some of the strikes were
dangerous, many strikes resulted in the deaths of those involved, such as the Homestead Crisis, and
Pinkerton (Doc G). Combined with events such as the Wildcat strike, Haymarket strike, the Pullman
Strike, the public began to associate a negative

Human Rights in Ender´s Game by Orson Scott Card Essays
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a novel that shows what would happen if the government had
too much power and has a powerful angle on inequality and child labor. My novel has taught me a
lot about inequality, as did my research. But I found out a lot about my main point; child labor.
Child labor effects everyone without them even knowing. I'm sure you've unknowingly bought
something that aids people who do these things to people. America is full of stores that have
clothing made by children, but it's not only us... maybe the things going on in Africa, where most of
the cases are coming from, need a little light shed on them. In Africa they are using kids to cut down
large trees, or in sweatshops... in actuality it's any job that could help ... Show more content on

In over twenty–five countries, many children are abducted and beaten into submission to be used in
real life wars. A very famous viral video called "Kony 2012" was trying to get people to help catch
the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, who has kidnapped thousands of children over the past twenty
years. Child soldiers are defined as: children under the age of 18 who are recruited by state or non–
state armed groups and used as fighters, cooks, suicide bombers, human shields, messengers, spies,
or even for sexual purposes. Most of the children that do get wound up in the world of child labor,
(the ones not forced or kidnapped) are doing it for family or their education. In Enders Game, he is
doing it for the world. Ender is being used as a child soldier to stop an alien race and at only age
eleven, he is a commander of his own fleet and commits genocide. This is obviously wrong on so
many levels, in real life and in the book. Someone at a young age that should be happy and smiling
is making a choice whether or not to end someone's life. The up side is there is a lot of people trying
to end this and people like the International Labor Organization are working very hard to end all
forms of child labor. There was also a walk to raise money for the benefit of child labor. Africa is
most of the organizations main focus from what I could tell. Children are supposed to be able to be

Essay on The Labour Government as The Creator Of The...
The Labour Government as The Creator Of The Welfare State A Welfare State is a system in which
the government undertakes responsibility for the well being of its population, through
unemployment insurance, old age pensions and other social security measures. In order to achieve
this the Labour Government of 1945–51 introduced a number of reforms, including the National
Insurance Act of 1946 and the Education Act. They also managed to achieve full employment, a
target never met before in Britain. However, they are not the only reason for the arrival of the
Welfare State. The Liberal Government of 1906–14 also deserves some credit, as well as the
coalition government formed during World War Two, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Labour took the idea they produced three pieces of legislation. These were the National
Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act of 1946, the National Insurance Act of 1946 and the National
Assistance Act of 1948. The National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act made injuries sustained in
the work place a public matter and set up an insurance scheme, where the worker, employer and the
state paid money weekly, providing insurance against injury. The National Insurance Act provided,
as suggested by Beveridge, a range of benefits to cover the person from birth until death. The
National Assistance Act provided further cover for those who were disabled, old aged, sick or of any
other special needs, acting as a "safety net." The problem with this, however, was that benefits were
not set high enough and so National Assistance boards were flooded with applications for extra
benefit, creating great strain on the available funds. To deal with the problem of "disease" Labour
provided the National Health Service. This was completely thought up by them and was very
successful. It provided free medical assistance of any kind, including eye care, dental care, hearing
facilities, specialists and general practitioners. It is arguably "the greatest single achievement in the
story of the Welfare State." "Ignorance" was dealt with through the

If Stonewall products are perceived less competitive in the market, it would in turn lead to the
adjustment of the human resource demand for production.
Technology advancement enables the company to obtain better competitive advantages through cost
reduction resulted from improved production. Associating with the introduction of new technology,
different profiles of workforce may be required to perform the job. The supply and demand of
human resource must be carefully planned in such scenario. In Stonewall case, senior management
may need to consider what new technology could be adopted for its production.
In the last 3 decades, the enforcement of labour related legislations and regulations is also an
external factor impacts on HR planning. Those legislations govern how a company recruits, selects,
promotes, trains and compensates its employees. As an example, employment equity needs to be
considered during the HR planning process. Besides, the increase of minimum wages will affect
company's decision in expanding its workforce. Moreover, as Stonewall's employees are unionized,
it will limit the flexibility of Stonewall to make drastic decisions to lay off its employees even under
very critical situations. And unionized employees will receive higher wages which will again impact
Stonewall's operational cost.
Demographics affect HR planning activities: two consequences of baby boomers' retirement: the

Importance Of Labor Unions
Why we need labor unions? Labor unions are a part of American history and the reason why we all
aren't slaving away in seven days a week for 10 cents an hour. Without labor unions, workers work
at the poor pay, poor working conditions, no protective equipment or health benefits. Labor unions
are important because they are one of the few ways working people can organize, to be heard, and to
prevent corporate abuses of power. However, union music provided a powerful tool to recruit new
members. The union music that related to labor union movement are "Bread and Roses" "Which
side are you on" and " Talking Union." First, in "Essential labor songs" Kim Ruehl states that "
'Bread and Roses' originally written by James Oppenheim, absolutely encompasses the sentiments
involved with labor struggles. It's based on the old phrase 'bread and circuses.' In this song, the
workers are basically saying 'feed us, yes, but give us a quality life as well.' " The song and slogan
are essential parts of The 1912 textile strike in Lawrence, cause of higher wages and shorter work
hours. The lyrics, the history of it, the musical rendition, realities that the struggle continues and my
own experiences bring the tears. Tears of they are witnessing the steps of acceptance, new laws, and
global support. Tears of deep sadness knowing there is so much more that needs to accomplish.

Child Labour Essay
Child labour is the practice of having children engage in economic activity, on part or full–time
basis. The practice deprives children of their childhood, and is harmful to their physical and mental
development. Poverty, lack of good schools and growth of informal economy are considered as the
important causes of child labour in India.
The 2001 national census of India estimated the total number of child labour, aged 5–14, to be at
12.6 million. In 2001, out of a 12.6 million, about 12 million children in India were in a hazardous
job. UNICEF estimates that India with its larger population has the highest number of labourers in
the world less than 14 years of age, while sub–Saharan African countries have the highest
percentage of children who are deployed as child labour. International Labour Organisation
estimates that agriculture at 60 percent is the largest employer of child labour in India, while United
Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates 70% of child labour is deployed in agriculture
and related activities. Outside of agriculture, child labour is observed in almost all informal sectors
of the Indian economy.
Companies including Gap, Primark, Monsanto and others have been criticised for child labour in
their products. The companies claim they have strict policies against selling products made by
underage kids, but there are many links in a supply chain making it difficult to police them all. In

Demonstrate your familiarity with the discussion set out in the course materials.
Introduction
The publication of the ''Unfair Advantage'' by the Worker's Freedom of Association in the United
States saw a major turn on Human Rights watch in the Labour ministry all over the world. Countries
such as Canada and Australia came into the lime light in the fight for labour struggles as human
rights. This move was aimed at revitalization of the labour movement. It is a move that saw the
International Human Rights Day declared a holiday as it is does Labour Day. The advocates on the
human rights approach work hand in hand with the human rights allies of the inexorable
internationalization of the labour struggles. They allowed the naming and shaming of the labour
laws abusers and infringement. These acts were more responsive to the current political and
economic zeitgeist than the traditional labour influences. On the other hand, reframing of human
rights was seen to result to authoritativeness to the labour discourse that would undermine trade
unionists. While the voices of those advocating for the framing of human rights was loud enough,
others saw this move as misplaced. It was a fact that the replacement of solidarity and the unity that
was the anchor for labour justice would be gone. It simply meant the end

The start of the "Los Angeles County Federation of Labor" Student's Name Institutional Affiliation
Abstract The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor is a regional labor organization in the state of
Los Angeles that has evolved representation of the interests of workers to include political
involvement. Its formation was a function of political influence in labor and the relevance of
merging labor movements to have better representations and high compulsion among leaders (Dean
et al., 2009). The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, as the name suggests, is a composite
labor body formed after the merging of all labor bodies in Los Angeles. The start of the "Los
Angeles County Federation of Labor" Los Angeles County Federation of Labor is a federation of

Labor and the formation enabled involvement in regional and national politics after the emergence
of politics as an important influence of labor movements(Dean et al., 2009). Initially, in the late 19th

The Effects Of Haymarket Bombing On American Labor Movement
In his book Death in the Haymarket, James Green recounted the American labor movement in the
late 1800s. The main focus of Green's book was the bombing of Haymarket, which occurred on May
4 in 1886. Beginning as a peaceful protest promoting the eight–hour work day, a bomb was thrown
causing devastating consequences. The Haymarket bombing almost ended the labor movement
altogether, with unjustified trials and fear implemented amongst all Americans. However, it is
important to know that the Haymarket bombing is not just an isolated event. From wage cuts to
people going on strike, labor unions starting up, to almost losing the labor movement altogether. The
Haymarket bombing was the fuse to an event larger bomb known as the labor movement. Although
the Haymarket bombing is an extremely important event, it should be seen in a much larger context
rather than an isolated event. The Haymarket bombing was an important incident in America's
history nevertheless, it falls under a much bigger category which is the labor movement. The labor
movement was started because of the unjust ways that labor had on the working class in America
during the 1800s. It first started out with wage cuts for the working class in America, which then led
to an increasing amount of strikes. Then leading to the formation of labor unions, which is the
people who were attending the meeting at Haymarket the day of the bombing. So if the labor
movement had never started, then the bombing at Haymarket may have

Labour Movement Pros And Cons
The Labor Movement generated opposition from both the government and the public since they both
saw unions as violent and lawless. The government used force to control the unions showing their
disgust for the views and actions of these organizations. Well, organized and growing businesses
took the advantage in the struggle with labor, so the workers started labor unions. It is easily argued
both ways whether or not unions formed were beneficial to workers. With great evidence though, it
is proven that although beneficial in many ways, for the most part unions were very negative
towards the progress of our country.

Suddenly a dynamite bomb was thrown that killed or injured several dozen people. The people

to a dismal end.
The Homestead strike in 1892 was the first major strike to take place after the downfall of the
Knights. It started at Carnegie's steel plant in Homestead, PA. when workers refused to accept new
wage cuts. Henry Clay Frick shut down the plant and surrounded it with guards to protect the
property. The infuriated workers soon ran the guards out when they realized that Frick had
intentions of reopening the plant with strikebreakers. After a thirteen hour struggle Carnegies
Company persuaded the governor of Pennsylvania to provide help, the state militia was summoned
to restore peace. The company began to bring in strikebreaker to replace employees who had walked
out. Many of the leaders of the strike were prosecuted for rioting and murder. The steel workers'
union was detroyed. Some members of Congress were sympathetic to Homestead strikers. The
public in general felt little sympathy for the strikers because they felt that the working person should
remain free to sell services as an individual and not through a union. Many thought that the right to
work was sacred. They felt that union organizers had no business interfering

Labour Movement History
The labor movement in the United States developed and expanded out of the desire to guard and
defend the general concern of employees. For individuals in the manufacturing and engineering
segments, organized labor unions disputed for improved, higher–paying wages, sufficient hours and
harmless working surroundings or environments (Schaller 662). The labor movement also raised
concerns for efforts to discontinue child labor, offer health benefits and supply assistance to workers
who had been injured or retired. Between 1860 and 1910 the population of the United States more
than tripled, and so did the industrial work force (Schaller 645). New types of profitable enterprise

The Knights of Labor unification, founded in 1869, took the association to a new altitude, portraying
a national connection (Schaller 665). The philosophy of the Knights was to consist of anyone

controlled under the command of Terence Powderly and recruited politics to help battle its variety of
foundations (Schaller 665). The Knights of Labor acknowledged that "an injury to one is the
concern of all," insisted on having only eight–hour shifts, did not agree that child labor was
acceptable, and accentuated worker instruction and supportive foundations (Schaller 665). However,
events unexpectedly took a turn for the worse in 1886 when the Haymarket rebellion saw the idea of
the Knights, overshadowed by the fatality of police officers and civilians and fifty innocent people
wounded in a bomb blast (Schaller 665). Community judgment turned not to be in favor of the

Workers in New York City are trying to raise their paycheck to $15 per hour. The workers message
was they cannot survive on their paychecks. Who is involved in it? Retail workers from Walmart
and other chains, home care and child–care workers, convenience store and dollar store workers,
adjunct university faculty and others have joined strikes to demand a pay raise to $15 per hour. What
are they doing to try to change this? New York workers went on a "Strike for $15". Rallies had been
planned for 1,000 cities across the nation, New York state has approved a law to gradually increase
the wage to $15. The past is related to today because they are both trying to change something. In
the past, they were fighting for better wages, reasonable hours, and safer conditions. It also tried to
stop child labor, give health benefits, and provide aid to workers who were injured or retired. And
today, workers are trying to raise they pay check to $15 per hour. In New York, workers are going
on strikes to raise their pay check. This impacts me because once I get a job, if the paycheck is still
$7.00 then I won't have enough money to get the things I need. Or, when I have a house or
apartment, what if I can't pay all the expenses because I don't have enough money. This is how it

Triangle Fire 1911
Blamelessness to Collective Guilt: Business and Government The Triangle Fire of 1911 was an
event that resulted in a drastic shift in the way government oversight worked to check private
business. Before the fire, American government had little to do with laws and regulations that
controlled the actions of private businesses. To cross the line would mean to cross the sanctity of
what made a business and business. The period following the Triangle Fire of 1911 would see this
line be destroyed, as New York grew to develope one of the most advanced and effective regulatory
bodies in the world. This model would then be easily copied by other states, eventually gaining
stature on a national level. 1911's tragic fire resulting in the deaths of ... Show more content on

Interfering with the actions of private business was considered taboo, and the government rarely
acted upon cases out of fear and propagating socialism. The horrific and very public death of 146
men, women, and children on March 11th, 1911 shocked the nation and forced action. One can
wonder what would have happened if Blanck and Harris were to have been found guilty by a jury of
their peers. Would the general public have been satisfied? Would the fight for labour rights
continued to be fought by organized labour groups alone? The very fact that the deaths were under
no one's direct responsibility pushed the burden of guilt into the public view. The government in this
instances was forced to fix weak legislation that made such an incident happen. In doing so they
began a long process of breaking down the taboo which prevented government from interfering with
private business operations. If firms could not be trusted to maintain the safety of their employees,
the government would be forced to step in and implement such measures. The Factory Safety
Commission went on to create one of the most progressive protective measures for workers,
implementing 38 new laws in New York, becoming a model for the whole

Compare the ways in which Larkin and Abse write about place. You must include detailed critical
discussion of at least two poems by Larkin in your response.

Larkin and Abse both write about places in a very different, very unique style. One the one hand
Larkin talks about the places of his past and how they are no longer accessible; the changing of a
beautiful, unspoilt place to something short of an eyesore; a pace he is in but does not feel he
belongs and even places within his mind. Alternatively Abse talks longingly of the places he once
lived in, and how upsetting it is to find they are no longer the same. Some examples of the copious

Moreover, in the first stanza when describing the rural area he repeatedly uses assonance. "Skies and
scarecrows, haystacks, hares and pheasants"– these soft consonant sounds make you slow down as
the repeated "s" sounds become hard to say, slowing you down and not allowing you to rush past
these, in Larkin's case, beautiful little details of the countryside.
Furthermore, Larkin's poem Mr Bleaney refers to a place that the persona does not wish to be in, yet
has ended up having surrendering and suffers the consequences. Mr Bleaney is essentially a poem
about a circumstantial situation that is given as a dramatic monologue, and rather like a drama, tells
a story that is full of lucid mystery. The first half of the poem is slow and deliberate and helps to
create a macabre feel to the poem. A change of pace occurs in the second half of the poem, though is
not immediately apparent. It then seems to be despairingly urgent, as Mr Bleaney subtly moves from
a recollected past to an observed present, through his mediation with the new tenant. In addition
Larkin's use of listing creates a dull and monotonous feel to the place, giving the reader the feel that
no one, unless in a dire situation, would want to suffer living in such an undesirable place. One may
argue the most symbolic thing in the room is the "sixty watt bulb". Light is a commonly used

2012 Prof. David Goutor Great success often comes from previous failures. Without failure,
greatness can be impossible to attain. For this and many other reasons, it is unfair to view the
Knights of Labor as hopeless dreamers who accomplished little. Instead, this paper will express the
way in which the Knights of Labour contributed to a greater social blueprint; a blueprint that helped
shape future generations. The impact that the Knights of Labour have had on society can be seen

Andrew Moore 's Opera Of The Proletariat : Rugby League,...
In America, sports are viewed as a proud American tradition. Football is a collective celebration of
American excess and capitalism.
This paper will analyze Moore's
claims and determine the level at which Rugby's cultural impact played out on Australia. Moore
begins his paper in a chronological historical sense. Rather than beginning with any thorough
analysis, he begins by linking the Rugby League to the Labour Movements simply by informing the
reader of several League players who also had significant links to the Labour Movement. Moore
asserts that this linkage is not simply correlation, but rather causation when he states that "Rugby
league was part of the making of a labour life." (Moore, 57). Moore then continues this point by
informing the reader of more connections of labour union members with sports, and shares several
anecdotes such as "Pat Clancy, long term secretary of the Building Workers ' Industrial Union,
organised union meetings so that he would not miss radio broadcasts of the South Sydney Rabbitohs
' games." (Moore, 57). After this introduction, Moore laments the lack of study of sports. He claims

The Knights Of Labor During The Civil Era
As Napoleon Hill once said, "Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed
of an equal or greater benefit". This holds true to the Knights of Labor in their endeavor to increase
solidarity and unity, by encouraging opposing communities to work together, thus improving the
lives of workers and their families during the diminutive period of time when the Knights of Labor
were active. The Knight's tackled the monopolists and fought for the justices they knew to be theirs,
in strong efforts to improve societal inequalities – organizing groups of workers throughout different
classes of sex, race, and skill. The major impacts that the Knights of Labor had on society during
their peak, as well as in the future, can be illustrated by 3 principal criteria that this paper will be
centralized around. Firstly, the Knights of Labor were dreamers – they encouraged people to look
forward and take action against poor circumstances and lack of power; because of this, they were
ahead of other labour organizations during this time as the Knights fought against what others said
to be unalterable. Second, the Knights of Labor brought disparate groups together, forging the way
to a progressive society in the height of an otherwise racist and sexist one. Lastly, the Knights of
Labor drew a significant expansion of wage earnings across North America – providing many
people with secure jobs and a culture in which they were protected by unity.

Manual Labour Movement Essay
The independent educational action of 1826 through 1876 emphasized the rise of the manual labor
movement and mechanics' institutes. The contributions of several educational leaders and their
importance to the teaching field and vocational education are discussed. Other represented
achievements from the Morrill Act, the Hampton Institute, and the Kalamazoo Case are discussed
and their significance in the history of vocational education.
The Manual Labor Movement
During the early 1800's, different schools served different functions. Mechanic's Institutes combined
practice with the study of science. Lyceums attended to cultural as well as educational needs and
aroused interest in agricultural and industrial education. The manual labor movement attempted to
meet the needs of the farmer, mechanic, vocational education, and a way of satisfying a practical
need of a population. In addition, Manual Labor Academies included academic studies as well as
time working in a shop. The Education committee felt this combination of studies and labor
contributed to the development of a better citizen. The combination of labor and education created a
strong base for vocational education. Although the manual labor movement lost momentum by the

The most important and significant ownership advantage of IKEA is their brand value. With a brand

a Financial Analysis which measures the economic profit of the brand. Economic profit is the

component is the Role of Brand or in other words the influence on customer choice. Role of Brand
measures the proportion of the decision to purchase that is attributable to the brand relative to other
factors. Applying Role of Brand to forecast profits gives the earnings attributed to the brand alone.
Interbrand's last key component is Brand Strength, which is a diagnostic tool for measuring brand
performance relative to competition. It supports brand management with identifying areas of highest

Essay on Origins of the Watch making Industry
Origins of the Watch making Industry
The production of watches was a major industry of Great Britain for hundreds of years. Watch
making originated in Europe in the early 16th century, when coiled springs were first used to power
clocks. Clocks were powered by weights originally, and therefore remained stationary.
The springs meant that clocks could be moved for the first time, and soon, German clockmakers
started to make very small clocks, which are considered as the earliest watches made. Watch making
was the most advanced line of the clock making industry, which developed when
Blacksmiths started introducing their skills with metal to clock making. Watches were being made in
Great Britain from around the middle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prescot made rough watch movements and it is often mistaken that
Prescot made the actual watches. This means that it was just the actual working parts of the watch
that were roughly finished and assembled, the movements would then be shipped to finishers all
over the country, and overseas, where they would be taken apart again, finished and put into cases,
usually made of precious metals such as gold and silver.
The nature of the industry
Watch making was an example of what is known as a 'cottage industry'.
Cottage industries were a tradition of Lancashire, and included any type of manual work where
goods were produced at home. The goods produced by a cottage industry were often on a piecework
basis. That is when the goods are made to order when required. An order would be placed with the
producer for a certain number of items, as and when required. All those involved in the watch
making industry could earn a good wage doing this king of work properly and on time. Each
craftsman would have one specialty in particular, spring making, watch hand making and so on. The
various parts would come from each workshop and then these would be sent to an assembly
workshop, where the rough watch movement would be constructed from all of the parts. These
would then be sent to be finished (that is polished and made ready to be fitted into a case). Twenty
individual branches of watch making were open during the mid Victorian

Child Labour: A History
America and The Industrial Revolution
'Forms of child labor, including indentured servitude and child slavery, have existed throughout
American history.'
(http://www.continuetolearn.uiowa.edu/laborctr/child_labor/about/us_history.html) During the years
following the Civil War, (http://americanhistory.about.com/od/industrialrev/a/indrevoverview.htm)
the American working class made an abrupt transition away from farm work and home chores.
Workers shifted over to the ever–growing factory production industry. Many factory production jobs
became available following the year 1820, mid way through Industrial Revolution. This era of
mechanic and industrial growth created new social divides in American society, forming new castes
of entrepreneurs and splitting the population into the middle and the lower class
(http://www.eiu.edu/eiutps/childhood.php). Many families relocated from rural neighbourhoods to
seek employment. American citizens from the suburbs traveled to nearby cities, searching for a
better life and employment. In the newly established industrial empire the jobs available often
required long hours working in dangerous conditions. The work offered was in exchange for little
pay– families would often have no choice but to accept the conditions. In the cases of unfavorable
lines of work, children were often proffered. Children were favored because of their small stature,
ability for nimble precise work, and

Development can be defined as a wide participatory process of social change in a society intended to
bring about both social and material advancement including greater equality, freedom and other
valued qualities for the majority of the people through gaining greater control over their
environment (Everett Rogers, 1976, Moemeka, Pg.8). I believe that development needs to start at
the grassroots, and it needs to begin with children. This is not to say that this is the only kind of
development that needs to take place, but this is the best kind of development for the future, as it is a
fresh learning process vs. an 'undoing old methods and re–learning' process. Issues concerning
children therefore need to be addressed immediately. Child labour is one of the primary concerns in
developing countries. Child labour has been defined by the ILO as all economic activities carried
out by persons less than 15 years of age (regardless of occupational status, wage–earners, own–
account workers, unpaid family workers etc.) Child labour is illegal in most countries, especially
bonded labour as well as those situations which involve children working in dangerous and
hazardous environments. Children are often engaged in work that is detrimental to their emotional,
psychological as well as physical well being, as in the case of prostitution. According to a 1997
estimate there are about 250 million

activists not backed by the federal government as they were during The Great Depression, the

The History of Labor Unions Essay
During the Progressive Era of the Gilded Age, many laborers were being mistreated by the
companies that they worked for. Because of this, workers started forming labor unions or organized
association of workers, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. Many of these labor
unions failed, while few of them achieved their goals and still exist today. Many factors contributed
to the failure of these labor unions. The labor unions were given a bad image, the reason for this was
the media, and they did this by publishing articles depicting the unions as violent, communist
groups. The government supported big business during this time, since the government had a lot of
power; this was a huge setback in the labor unions' battles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Other times, the newspapers would associate them with violence. During the Great Railroad Strike
of 1877, Charles M. Dollar Along with seeing labor movements as radical, many labor movements
were labeled socialist by the media. In the cartoon in Document C, the labor movement is shown to
be influenced by socialist controls. Considering the generally negative connotation that came with
communism in the United States, when newspapers like Harper's Weekly labeled organized labor as
socialist, many people developed a negative attitude towards organized labor. The disapproval of
organized labor was not exclusive to the American public but also the federal government. During
the late 20th century, the Supreme Court became increasingly conservative on the issue of organized
labor. In the Supreme Court case In re Debs, the court ruled that federal government controlled
interstate commerce and was obligated to keep the railroads from obstructions and in that specific

Labor Unions Benefits
The labor union efforts in the United States cultivated out of the requirement to safeguard the
collective interest of the common workers (History.com, 2009). In the industrial sectors, organized
labor unions battled for improved wages, practical hours, and safer working conditions; these
movements led to beneficial efforts to end child labor, give health benefits, and offer assistance to
workers who were injured or retired (History.com, 2009). Their origins lay in the developmental
years of the U.S., when a free wage labor market emerged in the craft worker trades late in the
colonial period. The earliest recorded strike occurred in 1768 in New York to protested a wage
reduction, this lead to the formation of the Federal Society of Journeymen ... Show more content on

Some economics have contended that globalization is making labor unions ability to demand the
level of compensation that their workers deserve harder because of the threat of outsourcing and the
competition from foreign production (Nahmias, 2013). In some studies, it was found that
globalization has considerably decreased the effects of labor union strength on labor share and
employment rates (Nahmias, 2013). Also, while there is some indication that globalization is
diminishing the ability of labor unions to mandate greater employment protection, there is some
signs that unions are working persistently to protect their members from unemployment through
legislative regulation (Nahmias, 2013). Even though globalization has changed the factors of
production, caused a decline in labor's bargaining power, and weakened the unions; labor unions

Essay about Bravely J. Silver's Forces of Labour
There are several sociological theories in the study of contemporary labor unrest. However, this
essay will start off to examine the rationale of capital mobility and labor transformation processes,
as a coherent point of departure. To what extent is this approach significant? A simple answer is the
sociological framework of Silver (2003), which is our central focus, is in contrast with the above
approaches. Therefore, it's imperative to provide an overview of what Silver was critical about.
Silver conceived that the above approaches and numerous other literatures about labor unrest and
globalization comprise severe methodological ramifications. Contrary to these she states that a
coherent methodology should be able to situate ways in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In this section, we aim to explain ways in which the conceptualization of the "race to bottom"
generates different sociological interpretations. Although proponents of this thesis contradicts each
other in abstractions, yet they agreed that the impact of the late twentieth century has led to what
Zolberg (1995) calls an entire extinction of the social fabric, which sustains working class formation
(cited in Silver, 2003:1). The most polemic explanation to this trend, however, is central to the
impact of capital mobility and modifications of modern processes of a global capital accumulation;
of which both ushered under the archetype of what Silver calls the "rubric of globalization" (2003).
In the analysis that follows, we shall evaluate the degree to which "hypermobility of productive
capital" is hyped in explicating contemporary labor unrest. To this extent, we can now turn to
explore the effect of Multinational Corporations on existing labor unrest.
It has been shown that multinational corporations did enhance a thriving global job market, yet it
has unleashed a terminal effect to the traditional characteristics of working class. To this extent,
global workers were not only forced into frantic competition, but their most influential instrument –
"barging power" has been diametrically devalued (2003:4). Buttressing this view, the

Summary: The Canadian Labour Movement

states "The Canadian labour movement has been one of the enormous struggle and commitment.
Throughout, government as played a prominent role in defining rights of workers and the power of
employers. This is the story of the government as a friend and foe of Canadian workers" (Taylor).
There were several events in recent Canadian history where the government has intervened and the
workers end up in a worse position then they started with. In more recent decades the government
has slowly been taking away unions ability to work and workers right to strike. The history of the
industrial revolution in Canada has lead to the rise of unions and thus the repression of workers
when they are trying to get their rights.Workers realized they needed to work together in solidarity
to get what they wanted and thus the idea of collective alliance was born. In the late 19th century

Industrial Capitalism

  • 1. Industrial Capitalism Where democratic principles and practices are not adhered to within an organization, then the potential for one group or clique to dominate power exists. This was the case with the Teamsters Union. History has shown in the United States, that when this occurs, other individuals or voices, rarely have a say in the decision–making process (Summers, 637). This can be detrimental because a bureaucracy is created as a result. This structure eliminates an organized opposition; therefore those in power are secured to do what they want without anyone opposing them. If individuals in power are vulnerable to believe they need the support of organized crime to ensure their hold on power, corruption is sure to ensue. Likewise, corrupt union leaders enjoy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Power can be defined as the ability to cause or prevent change. The structure of a labour union is important, because power is channeled to decision makers through organizational structures. "Moral power" can be defined as "the ability to cause or prevent change through appeals to fundamental concepts of rightness, which will, of course, be relative to time, place, and circumstances" (Marshall, 445). There is a theory involving the diminishing utility of power that states organizations are most vulnerable to the types of power they are attempting to acquire or have lost (Marshall, 447). By allowing organized crime to infiltrate, the union loses moral power and therefore loses credibility when trying to bargain for improved or safer working conditions for its members or when trying to draft an image of social justice. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, if unions have the wrong leader in power, corruption is more likely to occur because of this lack of moral power given by third parties. In essence, the organized crime incumbent is the "third party" the corrupt union turns toward. However, this third party will not justify or impute moral values to the betterment of the organization. While the leader of a union is to make business decisions based on economic, political, or physical information, the benefit of a third party is that they will almost always judge an issue on ... • 6. Labour Movement Vs Proletariat Labor movement and proletariat were the results of Marx and Engels ideological thoughts. Their vision of the society was a world where capitalism doesn't exist. They thought that the proletariat arises because the capitalism using machines started to replace workers and killing competition of middle class, usually with small business. Proletariat is the class of society that live by its labor. They also thought that business should be owned by proletariat and private property shouldn't exist. They describe capitalism as a brutal system that leave poor people with nothing. In contrast to the theory of Marx and Engels, imperialism is based on the differences of people and the capabilities of each of them being successful. Social Darwinism was ... • 8. Andrew Moore 's Opera Of The Proletariat : Rugby League,... In America, sports are synonymous with popular American culture. Sports have ties to the everyman, capitalism, and patriotism. However, according to Andrew Moore's article, "Opera of the Proletariat: Rugby League, the Labour Movement and Working–Class Culture in New South Wales and Queensland", across the ocean in Australia, there is a strong connection between the creation of the Australian Rugby League and the Australian Labor Movement. This paper will analyze Moore's claims regarding the connection between the Australian Rugby League and not only the Australian Labor Movement, but socialist philosophy in general. Moore begins his paper in a chronological manner, telling us of the history of Australian Rugby and Labour. Rather than beginning with any thorough analysis, he begins by linking the Rugby League to the Labour Movements simply by informing the reader of several League players who also had significant links to the Labour Movement. Moore asserts that this linkage is not simply correlation, but rather causation when he states that "Rugby league was part of the making of a labour life." (Moore, 57). Moore then continues this point by informing the reader of more connections of labour union members with sports, and shares several anecdotes such as "Pat Clancy, long term secretary of the Building Workers ' Industrial Union, organised union meetings so that he would not miss radio broadcasts of the South Sydney Rabbitohs ' games." (Moore, 57). After this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Role Of The Wto On Addressing Labour Standards Appropriate role of the WTO in addressing labour standards Introduction The relationship between international trade and labour standards is a key issue today. The relation defines the link between developing countries and advanced industrialized nations. International enforcement of labour standards is justifiable from two frontiers of arguments. The first one opines that "unfair" labour conditions and practices exist in many countries and trading partners and call for the need to offset an occurrence through appropriate trade policy measures in a bid to level the playing field (Elliott & Richard 2003, p. 67). The proponents of the argument include organized social and labour activists. Secondly, other social activists contend that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 147). Such standards are aimed at enforcing the adherence to WTO agreements by trading countries that have signed and ratified the WTO agreement. Most issues dealt with by the WTO derive from previous trade negotiations such as the Uruguay Round (1986–1994). All measures are taken with the view of raising standards of living and ensuring full employment (Brown 200, p. 971). To achieve its objectives, it undertakes a series of trade liberalizing agreements reached on consensus from the WTO 's members forming the General Council. Labour standards under the World Trade Organization (WTO) Labour Standards in the World Trade Organization refer to the binding rules forming part of the principles and jurisprudence applicable within the rule making structures of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The labour standards play a critical role within the WTO. Despite them being a backbone in the WTO, they form a prominent issue facing the WTO hence generating academic and economic debates (Rodrik 1997, p.37). The scope to which the WTO recognizes labour standards is based on the principles established in Conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and renowned human rights treaties such as the International Bill of Human Rights. Core Labour Standards The core labour standards are identified by the 'Declaration of the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work ' by the International Labour Organization (ILO). • 12. Essay on Working Class This article entitled The Honest Workingman and Workers' Control: The Experience of Toronto Skilled Workers, 1860–1892 written by Gregory S. Kealey looks to better describe the practice of three Toronto unions from the 1860's to the early 1890's and their struggles for their rights and deserved wages in order to illustrate the strength these types of unions possess. This article recognizes that there are industries where unions win, and still must rely on skilled labour. Many times people hear the term 'industrialization' and think that all craft workers get blown away, however this is not exactly the case as this article demonstrates. Kealey looks at three separate cases in three separate industries to identify the significant variations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Labour unions played a great role in the battle between the capitalist world and the labourers who wanted their rights to stay intact. In the Toronto moulding department, the union's claim to control was the central issue being discussed. Many attempts at strikes were mentioned resulting in major struggles for the working class. Eventually, there industry wide agreements in stove foundries, but until this the strength of the moulders depended solely on their skill and control of the work process through their union. The Iron Moulders differed from the Coopers in that they maintained a high level of workplace control into the twentieth century. This was mainly due to the strength of their organization, but also relied on the slower introduction of machinery to replace physical workers in this industry, and therefore the workers had time to perfect their craft before the machines arrived. (Kealey, 1976) The third, and probably most supportive case given by Kealey is that of the Toronto printer's industry and union, with their control of the shop floor demonstrating early union power. These printers had a very strong tradition of craft pride and identified well with their work. It was obvious that you had to be literate to be involved in printing, and therefore these printing trades were very exclusive, and to belong you needed to show a great deal of intelligence and knowledge. Because of this, printers in these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. How Did Ben Chifley Influence The Labour Movement "I try to think of the Labour movement, not as putting an extra sixpence into somebody's pocket, or making somebody Prime Minister or Premier, but as a movement bringing something better to the people, better standards of living, greater happiness to the mass of the people. We have a great objective – the light on the hill – which we aim to reach by working for the betterment of mankind not only here but anywhere we may give a helping hand." This is but a short excerpt of Ben Chifley's famous 'Light on the Hill' speech in 1949, but it shows the extent of his political aptitude and beliefs as a true believer in the Labour movement. He is best recognised for his leadership in the Keynesian, interventionalist reconstruction of the Australian economy following the Second World War and also his tenure as the architect of the Australian welfare state since 1945. As such, it is highly evident Ben Chifley had a substantial impact on the post–war Australian economy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 16. Apush Labor Union Dbq Essay The 1800s is characterized with the rise of industrial America. As technological advances were introduced to industry, unskilled labor also rose in accordance to the rise in factories. However, this rise also introduced several labor unions such as the Knights of Labor, which organized a series of protests and riots. The labor unions had good intentions, aiming to lower the average work hours for workers, as well as increase their wages. However, their methods which involved riots and protests, were altogether not effective, and ended up being detrimental to their cause. Between 1875 and 1900, labor unions surged and were temporarily successful; however, their methods would prove detrimental to their cause overtime, leading to their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite being able to cause a small improvement in workers' pay and hours, labor unions ultimately died out by the 1900s due to their methods. Unable to truly focus on the plight of skilled workers, most labor unions instead focused on that of unskilled workers, pushing aside the skilled workers. (Doc D). The actions of labor unions ended up being counterproductive, forcing companies to wage war against the labor unions. These stricter contracts such as that of Western Union Telegraph Company, forced workers to affiliate themselves against labor unions. (Doc E) One important thing to note is that the workers' rights advocates were never able to coincide on one factor. As evidenced in an illustration in 1887, labor unions had to compete with other movements such as socialism, anarchism, and other labor unions. (Doc F). Because of this, the media, although recognizing the labor union movement, began viewing the labor unions as dangerous entities. Although the initial strikes such as the Wabash strike were successful, the ones that followed proved detrimental to the movement, and caused the steady decline of the labor unions. Because some of the strikes were dangerous, many strikes resulted in the deaths of those involved, such as the Homestead Crisis, and Pinkerton (Doc G). My novel has taught me a lot about inequality, as did my research. But I found out a lot about my main point; child labor. Child labor effects everyone without them even knowing. I'm sure you've unknowingly bought something that aids people who do these things to people. America is full of stores that have clothing made by children, but it's not only us... maybe the things going on in Africa, where most of the cases are coming from, need a little light shed on them. In Africa they are using kids to cut down large trees, or in sweatshops... in actuality it's any job that could help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In over twenty–five countries, many children are abducted and beaten into submission to be used in real life wars. A very famous viral video called "Kony 2012" was trying to get people to help catch the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, who has kidnapped thousands of children over the past twenty years. Child soldiers are defined as: children under the age of 18 who are recruited by state or non– state armed groups and used as fighters, cooks, suicide bombers, human shields, messengers, spies, or even for sexual purposes. Most of the children that do get wound up in the world of child labor, (the ones not forced or kidnapped) are doing it for family or their education. In Enders Game, he is doing it for the world. Ender is being used as a child soldier to stop an alien race and at only age eleven, he is a commander of his own fleet and commits genocide. This is obviously wrong on so many levels, in real life and in the book. Someone at a young age that should be happy and smiling is making a choice whether or not to end someone's life. The up side is there is a lot of people trying to end this and people like the International Labor Organization are working very hard to end all forms of child labor. There was also a walk to raise money for the benefit of child labor. Africa is most of the organizations main focus from what I could tell. Children are supposed to be able to be free and happy ... • 20. Essay on The Labour Government as The Creator Of The... The Labour Government as The Creator Of The Welfare State A Welfare State is a system in which the government undertakes responsibility for the well being of its population, through unemployment insurance, old age pensions and other social security measures. In order to achieve this the Labour Government of 1945–51 introduced a number of reforms, including the National Insurance Act of 1946 and the Education Act. They also managed to achieve full employment, a target never met before in Britain. However, they are not the only reason for the arrival of the Welfare State. The Liberal Government of 1906–14 also deserves some credit, as well as the coalition government formed during World War Two, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Labour took the idea they produced three pieces of legislation. These were the National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act of 1946, the National Insurance Act of 1946 and the National Assistance Act of 1948. The National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act made injuries sustained in the work place a public matter and set up an insurance scheme, where the worker, employer and the state paid money weekly, providing insurance against injury. The National Insurance Act provided, as suggested by Beveridge, a range of benefits to cover the person from birth until death. The National Assistance Act provided further cover for those who were disabled, old aged, sick or of any other special needs, acting as a "safety net." The problem with this, however, was that benefits were not set high enough and so National Assistance boards were flooded with applications for extra benefit, creating great strain on the available funds. To deal with the problem of "disease" Labour provided the National Health Service. This was completely thought up by them and was very successful. It provided free medical assistance of any kind, including eye care, dental care, hearing facilities, specialists and general practitioners. It is arguably "the greatest single achievement in the story of the Welfare State." "Ignorance" was dealt with through the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If Stonewall products are perceived less competitive in the market, it would in turn lead to the adjustment of the human resource demand for production. Technology advancement enables the company to obtain better competitive advantages through cost reduction resulted from improved production. Associating with the introduction of new technology, different profiles of workforce may be required to perform the job. The supply and demand of human resource must be carefully planned in such scenario. In Stonewall case, senior management may need to consider what new technology could be adopted for its production. In the last 3 decades, the enforcement of labour related legislations and regulations is also an external factor impacts on HR planning. Those legislations govern how a company recruits, selects, promotes, trains and compensates its employees. As an example, employment equity needs to be considered during the HR planning process. Besides, the increase of minimum wages will affect company's decision in expanding its workforce. Moreover, as Stonewall's employees are unionized, it will limit the flexibility of Stonewall to make drastic decisions to lay off its employees even under very critical situations. And unionized employees will receive higher wages which will again impact Stonewall's operational cost. • 24. Importance Of Labor Unions Why we need labor unions? Labor unions are a part of American history and the reason why we all aren't slaving away in seven days a week for 10 cents an hour. Without labor unions, workers work at the poor pay, poor working conditions, no protective equipment or health benefits. Labor unions are important because they are one of the few ways working people can organize, to be heard, and to prevent corporate abuses of power. However, union music provided a powerful tool to recruit new members. The union music that related to labor union movement are "Bread and Roses" "Which side are you on" and " Talking Union." First, in "Essential labor songs" Kim Ruehl states that " 'Bread and Roses' originally written by James Oppenheim, absolutely encompasses the sentiments involved with labor struggles. It's based on the old phrase 'bread and circuses.' In this song, the workers are basically saying 'feed us, yes, but give us a quality life as well.' " The song and slogan are essential parts of The 1912 textile strike in Lawrence, cause of higher wages and shorter work hours. The lyrics, the history of it, the musical rendition, realities that the struggle continues and my own experiences bring the tears. • 26. Child Labour Essay Child labour is the practice of having children engage in economic activity, on part or full–time basis. The practice deprives children of their childhood, and is harmful to their physical and mental development. Poverty, lack of good schools and growth of informal economy are considered as the important causes of child labour in India. The 2001 national census of India estimated the total number of child labour, aged 5–14, to be at 12.6 million. In 2001, out of a 12.6 million, about 12 million children in India were in a hazardous job. UNICEF estimates that India with its larger population has the highest number of labourers in the world less than 14 years of age, while sub–Saharan African countries have the highest percentage of children who are deployed as child labour. International Labour Organisation estimates that agriculture at 60 percent is the largest employer of child labour in India, while United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates 70% of child labour is deployed in agriculture and related activities. Outside of agriculture, child labour is observed in almost all informal sectors of the Indian economy. Companies including Gap, Primark, Monsanto and others have been criticised for child labour in their products. The companies claim they have strict policies against selling products made by underage kids, but there are many links in a supply chain making it difficult to police them all. Demonstrate your familiarity with the discussion set out in the course materials. Introduction The publication of the ''Unfair Advantage'' by the Worker's Freedom of Association in the United States saw a major turn on Human Rights watch in the Labour ministry all over the world. Countries such as Canada and Australia came into the lime light in the fight for labour struggles as human rights. This move was aimed at revitalization of the labour movement. It is a move that saw the International Human Rights Day declared a holiday as it is does Labour Day. The advocates on the human rights approach work hand in hand with the human rights allies of the inexorable internationalization of the labour struggles. They allowed the naming and shaming of the labour laws abusers and infringement. These acts were more responsive to the current political and economic zeitgeist than the traditional labour influences. On the other hand, reframing of human rights was seen to result to authoritativeness to the labour discourse that would undermine trade unionists. While the voices of those advocating for the framing of human rights was loud enough, others saw this move as misplaced. It was a fact that the replacement of solidarity and the unity that was the anchor for labour justice would be gone. It simply meant the end ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. The Effects Of Haymarket Bombing On American Labor Movement In his book Death in the Haymarket, James Green recounted the American labor movement in the late 1800s. The main focus of Green's book was the bombing of Haymarket, which occurred on May 4 in 1886. Beginning as a peaceful protest promoting the eight–hour work day, a bomb was thrown causing devastating consequences. The Haymarket bombing almost ended the labor movement altogether, with unjustified trials and fear implemented amongst all Americans. However, it is important to know that the Haymarket bombing is not just an isolated event. From wage cuts to people going on strike, labor unions starting up, to almost losing the labor movement altogether. The Haymarket bombing was the fuse to an event larger bomb known as the labor movement. Although the Haymarket bombing is an extremely important event, it should be seen in a much larger context rather than an isolated event. The Haymarket bombing was an important incident in America's history nevertheless, it falls under a much bigger category which is the labor movement. The labor movement was started because of the unjust ways that labor had on the working class in America during the 1800s. It first started out with wage cuts for the working class in America, which then led to an increasing amount of strikes. Then leading to the formation of labor unions, which is the people who were attending the meeting at Haymarket the day of the bombing. Well, organized and growing businesses took the advantage in the struggle with labor, so the workers started labor unions. It is easily argued both ways whether or not unions formed were beneficial to workers. With great evidence though, it is proven that although beneficial in many ways, for the most part unions were very negative towards the progress of our country. 1. The Homestead strike in 1892 was the first major strike to take place after the downfall of the Knights. It started at Carnegie's steel plant in Homestead, PA. when workers refused to accept new wage cuts. Henry Clay Frick shut down the plant and surrounded it with guards to protect the property. The infuriated workers soon ran the guards out when they realized that Frick had intentions of reopening the plant with strikebreakers. After a thirteen hour struggle Carnegies Company persuaded the governor of Pennsylvania to provide help, the state militia was summoned to restore peace. The company began to bring in strikebreaker to replace employees who had walked out. Many of the leaders of the strike were prosecuted for rioting and murder. The steel workers' union was detroyed. Some members of Congress were sympathetic to Homestead strikers. For individuals in the manufacturing and engineering segments, organized labor unions disputed for improved, higher–paying wages, sufficient hours and harmless working surroundings or environments (Schaller 662). The labor movement also raised concerns for efforts to discontinue child labor, offer health benefits and supply assistance to workers who had been injured or retired. The union was greatly controlled under the command of Terence Powderly and recruited politics to help battle its variety of foundations (Schaller 665). The Knights of Labor acknowledged that "an injury to one is the concern of all," insisted on having only eight–hour shifts, did not agree that child labor was acceptable, and accentuated worker instruction and supportive foundations (Schaller 665). However, events unexpectedly took a turn for the worse in 1886 when the Haymarket rebellion saw the idea of the Knights, overshadowed by the fatality of police officers and civilians and fifty innocent people wounded in a bomb blast (Schaller 665). "Skies and scarecrows, haystacks, hares and pheasants"– these soft consonant sounds make you slow down as the repeated "s" sounds become hard to say, slowing you down and not allowing you to rush past these, in Larkin's case, beautiful little details of the countryside. Furthermore, Larkin's poem Mr Bleaney refers to a place that the persona does not wish to be in, yet has ended up having surrendering and suffers the consequences. Mr Bleaney is essentially a poem about a circumstantial situation that is given as a dramatic monologue, and rather like a drama, tells a story that is full of lucid mystery. The first half of the poem is slow and deliberate and helps to create a macabre feel to the poem. A change of pace occurs in the second half of the poem, though is not immediately apparent. It then seems to be despairingly urgent, as Mr Bleaney subtly moves from a recollected past to an observed present, through his mediation with the new tenant. In addition Larkin's use of listing creates a dull and monotonous feel to the place, giving the reader the feel that no one, unless in a dire situation, would want to suffer living in such an undesirable place. Football is a collective celebration of American excess and capitalism. This paper will analyze Moore's claims and determine the level at which Rugby's cultural impact played out on Australia. Moore begins his paper in a chronological historical sense. After this introduction, Moore laments the lack of study of sports. He claims that labour historians tend to look over the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 52. The Knights Of Labor During The Civil Era As Napoleon Hill once said, "Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit". This holds true to the Knights of Labor in their endeavor to increase solidarity and unity, by encouraging opposing communities to work together, thus improving the lives of workers and their families during the diminutive period of time when the Knights of Labor were active. The Knight's tackled the monopolists and fought for the justices they knew to be theirs, in strong efforts to improve societal inequalities – organizing groups of workers throughout different classes of sex, race, and skill. The major impacts that the Knights of Labor had on society during their peak, as well as in the future, can be illustrated by 3 principal criteria that this paper will be centralized around. Firstly, the Knights of Labor were dreamers – they encouraged people to look forward and take action against poor circumstances and lack of power; because of this, they were ahead of other labour organizations during this time as the Knights fought against what others said to be unalterable. Second, the Knights of Labor brought disparate groups together, forging the way to a progressive society in the height of an otherwise racist and sexist one. Lastly, the Knights of Labor drew a significant expansion of wage earnings across North America – providing many people with secure jobs and a culture in which they were protected by unity. Economic profit is the difference between the earned revenue and the opportunity cost of the input (2). The second key component is the Role of Brand or in other words the influence on customer choice. Role of Brand measures the proportion of the decision to purchase that is attributable to the brand relative to other factors. Applying Role of Brand to forecast profits gives the earnings attributed to the brand alone. Interbrand's last key component is Brand Strength, which is a diagnostic tool for measuring brand performance relative to competition. It supports brand management with identifying areas of highest business impact (3). • 58. Essay on Origins of the Watch making Industry Origins of the Watch making Industry The production of watches was a major industry of Great Britain for hundreds of years. Watch making originated in Europe in the early 16th century, when coiled springs were first used to power clocks. Clocks were powered by weights originally, and therefore remained stationary. The springs meant that clocks could be moved for the first time, and soon, German clockmakers started to make very small clocks, which are considered as the earliest watches made. Watch making was the most advanced line of the clock making industry, which developed when Blacksmiths started introducing their skills with metal to clock making. Watches were being made in Great Britain from around the middle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prescot made rough watch movements and it is often mistaken that Prescot made the actual watches. This means that it was just the actual working parts of the watch that were roughly finished and assembled, the movements would then be shipped to finishers all over the country, and overseas, where they would be taken apart again, finished and put into cases, usually made of precious metals such as gold and silver. The nature of the industry Watch making was an example of what is known as a 'cottage industry'. Cottage industries were a tradition of Lancashire, and included any type of manual work where goods were produced at home. The goods produced by a cottage industry were often on a piecework basis. That is when the goods are made to order when required. An order would be placed with the producer for a certain number of items, as and when required. All those involved in the watch making industry could earn a good wage doing this king of work properly and on time. Each craftsman would have one specialty in particular, spring making, watch hand making and so on. The various parts would come from each workshop and then these would be sent to an assembly workshop, where the rough watch movement would be constructed from all of the parts. These would then be sent to be finished (that is polished and made ready to be fitted into a case). Twenty individual branches of watch making were open during the mid Victorian ... Child Labour : A History Essay Child Labour in The United States Child Labour: A History America and The Industrial Revolution 'Forms of child labor, including indentured servitude and child slavery, have existed throughout American history.' (http://www.continuetolearn.uiowa.edu/laborctr/child_labor/about/us_history.html) During the years following the Civil War, (http://americanhistory.about.com/od/industrialrev/a/indrevoverview.htm) the American working class made an abrupt transition away from farm work and home chores. Workers shifted over to the ever–growing factory production industry. Many factory production jobs became available following the year 1820, mid way through Industrial Revolution. This era of mechanic and industrial growth created new social divides in American society, forming new castes of entrepreneurs and splitting the population into the middle and the lower class (http://www.eiu.edu/eiutps/childhood.php). Many families relocated from rural neighbourhoods to seek employment. American citizens from the suburbs traveled to nearby cities, searching for a better life and employment. In the newly established industrial empire the jobs available often required long hours working in dangerous conditions. The work offered was in exchange for little pay– families would often have no choice but to accept the conditions. In the cases of unfavorable lines of work, children were often proffered. Introduction This paper deals with the role of transnational actors like UNICEF and the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the working children's movement. It examines the role of development communication in empowering working children, and its impact on the movement. The paper begins with a brief introduction to development, linking it with issues concerning working children. It then goes into a brief overview of UNICEF and the ILO, and talks about the role of each in the international working children's movement. It evaluates one program executed by each of the organizations in dealing with a development situation, in terms of intent and purpose, policies and procedures, obstacles faced, and the outcome of each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Development can be defined as a wide participatory process of social change in a society intended to bring about both social and material advancement including greater equality, freedom and other valued qualities for the majority of the people through gaining greater control over their environment (Everett Rogers, 1976, Moemeka, Pg.8). I believe that development needs to start at the grassroots, and it needs to begin with children. This is not to say that this is the only kind of development that needs to take place, but this is the best kind of development for the future, as it is a fresh learning process vs. an 'undoing old methods and re–learning' process. Issues concerning children therefore need to be addressed immediately. Child labour is one of the primary concerns in developing countries. Child labour has been defined by the ILO as all economic activities carried out by persons less than 15 years of age (regardless of occupational status, wage–earners, own– account workers, unpaid family workers etc.) Child labour is illegal in most countries, especially bonded labour as well as those situations which involve children working in dangerous and hazardous environments. Children are often engaged in work that is detrimental to their emotional, psychological as well as physical well being, as in the case of prostitution. "Franklin Delano Roosevelt stands with Abraham Lincoln as a founder of the modern American nation." President Roosevelt took office immediately after the what was arguably the worst financial collapse in history coined, The Great Depression. With astronomical levels of unemployment and extreme poverty, FDR's New Deal policy was established to restore production and stability. He promised change and allowed for a Democratic union to form. With all odds against them, labor activists during the Gilded Age were limited to what they accomplish. During the Gilded Age, not only were labor activists not backed by the federal government as they were during The Great Depression, the government actively ostracized individuals who participated. During the Gilded Age "...large industrial and financial institutions secured ever–greater economic and political power, ordinary Americans of all ethnic backgrounds found themselves increasingly subject to forces beyond their control." Individuals did not have an efficient means of communication; they were unable to talk to co–workers due to language barriers that the employers put forth. The radio gained popularity during The Great Depression, and almost every single household in American had one. Amid the Gilded Age, individuals simply did not have FDR's "fireside chats in which he explained in his programs to the public, using easily digestible anecdotes." FDR was able to gain the trust of millions of individuals and allowed them to band together and form a collective voice. The fellowship and promise of change that FDR instilled in individuals during the 1930s are mainly why the labor movement was so extraordinary. Workers were lost and needed a trusting leader to unite them all against the tyrannical corporations. Arguably, FDR is one of the reasons why the labor movement was thriving during his ... It is a move that saw the International Human Rights Day declared a holiday [where?] as it is does Labour Day. The advocates on the human rights approach work hand in hand with the human rights allies of the inexorable internationalization of the labour struggles.[source?] They allowed the naming and shaming of the labour laws abusers and infringement. These acts were more responsive to the current political and economic zeitgeist than the traditional labour influences. On the other hand, reframing of human rights was seen to result to authoritativeness to the labour discourse that would undermine trade unionists. • 68. The History of Labor Unions Essay During the Progressive Era of the Gilded Age, many laborers were being mistreated by the companies that they worked for. Because of this, workers started forming labor unions or organized association of workers, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. Many of these labor unions failed, while few of them achieved their goals and still exist today. Many factors contributed to the failure of these labor unions. The labor unions were given a bad image, the reason for this was the media, and they did this by publishing articles depicting the unions as violent, communist groups. The government supported big business during this time, since the government had a lot of power; this was a huge setback in the labor unions' battles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the cartoon in Document C, the labor movement is shown to be influenced by socialist controls. Considering the generally negative connotation that came with communism in the United States, when newspapers like Harper's Weekly labeled organized labor as socialist, many people developed a negative attitude towards organized labor. The disapproval of organized labor was not exclusive to the American public but also the federal government. During the late 20th century, the Supreme Court became increasingly conservative on the issue of organized labor. In the Supreme Court case In re Debs, the court ruled that federal government controlled interstate commerce and was obligated to keep the railroads from obstructions and in that specific case, strikes or protests. In the industrial sectors, organized labor unions battled for improved wages, practical hours, and safer working conditions; these movements led to beneficial efforts to end child labor, give health benefits, and offer assistance to workers who were injured or retired (History.com, 2009). Their origins lay in the developmental years of the U.S., when a free wage labor market emerged in the craft worker trades late in the colonial period. Also, while there is some indication that globalization is diminishing the ability of labor unions to mandate greater employment protection, there is some signs that unions are working persistently to protect their members from unemployment through legislative regulation (Nahmias, 2013). Even though globalization has changed the factors of production, caused a decline in labor's bargaining power, and weakened the unions; labor unions have not surrendered and continue to fight for their members (Nahmias, ... • 74. Essay about Bravely J. Silver's Forces of Labour There are several sociological theories in the study of contemporary labor unrest. However, this essay will start off to examine the rationale of capital mobility and labor transformation processes, as a coherent point of departure. To what extent is this approach significant? A simple answer is the sociological framework of Silver (2003), which is our central focus, is in contrast with the above approaches. Therefore, it's imperative to provide an overview of what Silver was critical about. Silver conceived that the above approaches and numerous other literatures about labor unrest and globalization comprise severe methodological ramifications. Contrary to these she states that a coherent methodology should be able to situate ways in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The last section In this section, we aim to explain ways in which the conceptualization of the "race to bottom" generates different sociological interpretations. Although proponents of this thesis contradicts each other in abstractions, yet they agreed that the impact of the late twentieth century has led to what Zolberg (1995) calls an entire extinction of the social fabric, which sustains working class formation (cited in Silver, 2003:1). The most polemic explanation to this trend, however, is central to the impact of capital mobility and modifications of modern processes of a global capital accumulation; of which both ushered under the archetype of what Silver calls the "rubric of globalization" (2003). In the analysis that follows, we shall evaluate the degree to which "hypermobility of productive capital" is hyped in explicating contemporary labor unrest. To this extent, we can now turn to explore the effect of Multinational Corporations on existing labor unrest. It has been shown that multinational corporations did enhance a thriving global job market, yet it has unleashed a terminal effect to the traditional characteristics of working class. To this extent, global workers were not only forced into frantic competition, but their most influential instrument – "barging power" has been diametrically devalued (2003:4).
