Causes Of Congressional Bridlock
First, to explain and identify the causes of congressional gridlock, one must know a little
information about it. Congressional gridlock is something in politics where it basically is difficult
for government to pass laws. This mostly occurs when there is a bicameral government. By
bicameral government, I mean the legislative branch and the executive branch support different
political parties. Sometimes it is hard to agree on the same laws, especially when it is two different
parties, like Democrats vs. Republicans. Republicans are seen as the conservatives and democrats
are seen as the liberals. With time, each party has grown a strong dislike for each other, causing the
gridlock in congress. An example of this gridlock is with President Clinton's impeachment in 1998.
The House of Representative was against Clinton and decided to impeach him. They charged him
with "lying under oath to a federal grand jury and obstructing justice"(History.com) Clinton was the
second President to become impeached. It all began in 1995, with a woman named Monica
Lewinsky. Clinton was having an affair with Lewinsky. Lewinsky confided in a friend, Linda Tripp,
from work and told her everything. The information she told Tripp was released after Lewinsky and
Clinton denied having sexual relations. A few months later, Lewinsky confessed and Clinton kept
denying. Finally, on September 9th, Kenneth Starr released 18 boxes of information about the affair,

Abortion has become a very popular issue in the U.S. It has become one of the most inflated
controversial issues in the world. Either your pro–life (supported by Republicans) or pro–choice
(supported by Democrats). Pro–life is when you disagree to abortion in all circumstances. On the

The reason for this is partially because of our natural rights. As it says in the Declaration of
Independence, " endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.––That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted
among Men." This indicates that the government is obligated to protect the life of the baby because
it is human and it has the right to his/her life. However, in the Bill of Rights it also mentions how we
have the right to our own body. In Article IV it explains, "The right of the people to be secure in
their persons". This is allowing women to do what they want with their body because the child is in
them. So even though abortion can cause damage to the body women still have the right to privacy
and their own body. There is both sides in the constitution and this controversy makes it difficult for
a decision to be simply made. Then there is also a debate on how the baby is not a human till it is

Binder explains that our founding fathers created a bureaucratic system that competes within itself
to serve its own interest and protect our constitution from tyranny. This statement is so true I cannot
argue whether it is true or false, but I would like to reinstate a few points Binders statement make.
The pilgrims came to America because of the religious persecution in The British Empire in which
tyranny engulfed the people. I can see why the founding fathers when writing the constitution held
so dearly their fear of tyranny because they had experienced it firsthand. I believe that our political
system has held well to these principals and its core values have remained the same since the day
the constitution was signed in 1776. Binder then states the main issues of the Congress of 1965–66,
"health care, environment, civil rights, transportation, and education statutes" (Binder, 34). Binder is
pointing out that the Congress of 1965–66 under President Lyndon B. Johnson was the most
productive Congress of all time. I would have to agree with Binder this Congress faced great
challenges like issues of civil rights. People might think that gridlock only exists today, given the
many conflicts that have raged between Congress and President Obama and led to several
government shutdowns. However, the author points out how gridlock also existed during President
Bush's presidency, which ended up being the main reason he broke his promise not to raise taxes

A solution to the gridlock will be hard to find due to the nature of American politics, and how to
find a way to stop or lessen this block in problem solving without creating some arbitrary guidelines
is another issue. While there is agreement the two–party majority system provides a government

The example Carle uses to describe the detriment on the quality of life of citizens by developers is
the Warne family. The Warne family had owned orange groves on their (undeveloped) land since the
1960's. After the passing of Henry and Ellen Warne, land developers began placing severe pressures
on the descendants of the family. Land developers were already constructing "planned residential
communities" outside their ranch, and were doing everything they could to purchase the last bit of
land from the Warne descendants. To compound the pressures they were already facing, estate taxes
were to be due that would require the descendants to pay fifty–five percent of the estates total value.
These estate taxes and land development pressures led to several farmers and land–owners having to
sell their land (that soon became more developed urbanized "sprawl").Although the Warne's
eventually were not forced to have their precious orange groves destroyed and developed, nine acres
of land they owned and designated as strawberry fields were completely eradicated by developers.
The method in which this land was zoned by the city created a value surpassing millions of dollars,

'The threat of global gridlock' by George Stalk Jr. is an article that predicts a possible crisis due to
the inability of worldwide transportation networks to support the demand of the global economy.

Gridlock is the slowing of the legislative processes due to the difficulty of congressional officials to

Our primary interest is to identify how congestion growth affects income growth in a metropolitan
region. In Table 2 and 3, the results of the simultaneous equation models show that the coefficient
estimates for congestion growth are negative and significant at the 10% level. That is, congestion
growth has a negative effect on income growth in both 2000s and 1990s. Specifically, every one–

gridlock than party loyalties do. He sets out to find what exactly causes gridlock, and his research
leads him to the conclusion that in government, there are certain pivotal players that either cause or

Obama was still in the Oval Office. In 2014, Congress was gridlocked over Immigration Reform.

On August 21, 2017 the sun was covered by a shadow of the moon. The Path of Totality was three
hours north of Denver in the Middle of Nowhere, Wyoming. The press was predicting the worst
traffic the state has ever seen and that small towns would be dangerously unprepared. Campsites
were fully booked several months in advance, and the warning was "Bring plenty of food and water"

seen before, or will ever see again. It was the 69 degrees of dusk.
The moment the shadow had moved enough to let in the smallest amount of daylight, the moment
ended. It was obvious why everyone made the trek. The sun being even 99% eclipsed is not the
same experience; it has to be in totality. Once I realized this, and realized how justified we all were,

  • 1. Causes Of Congressional Bridlock First, to explain and identify the causes of congressional gridlock, one must know a little information about it. Congressional gridlock is something in politics where it basically is difficult for government to pass laws. This mostly occurs when there is a bicameral government. By bicameral government, I mean the legislative branch and the executive branch support different political parties. Sometimes it is hard to agree on the same laws, especially when it is two different parties, like Democrats vs. Republicans. Republicans are seen as the conservatives and democrats are seen as the liberals. With time, each party has grown a strong dislike for each other, causing the gridlock in congress. An example of this gridlock is with President Clinton's impeachment in 1998. The House of Representative was against Clinton and decided to impeach him. They charged him with "lying under oath to a federal grand jury and obstructing justice"(History.com) Clinton was the second President to become impeached. It all began in 1995, with a woman named Monica Lewinsky. Clinton was having an affair with Lewinsky. Lewinsky confided in a friend, Linda Tripp, from work and told her everything. The information she told Tripp was released after Lewinsky and Clinton denied having sexual relations. A few months later, Lewinsky confessed and Clinton kept denying.
