Langston Hughes When Sue Wears Red Analysis
I can understand why Langston Hughes was often called the best poet laureate of Harlem; he really
was that good. I found all of his poetry inspired deeper analysis and thought, even after I book
down.
One of my favorites was "When Sue Wears Red". Red is an energetic color, it is eye–popping and is
generally considered an attraction enhancer. It is widely known that when one wants attention, they
should add a bit of red to their wardrobe. Her beauty shines so bright when she wears red that he
likens her to an antique cameo; something that is often considered a treasure by those who collect
them. He likens her to an Egyptian Queen; what woman wouldn't want to be likened to a queen? But
my favorite was when he wrote, "And the beauty of Susanna

Benjamin Franklin And Olaudah Equiano
Benjamin Franklin and Olaudah Equiano lived during the same time period. Franklin was one of the
founding fathers of the Untied States, and his commitment to making his country better was
remarkable. Benjamin Franklin wrote his autobiography from 1771– 1791. Franklin passed away
before he was able to see his autobiography published in 1791. Olaudah Equiano was a young boy
when he was kidnapped and sold into slavery. He was forced to work on naval vessels and on
plantations in Virginia. Equiano published his interesting narrative in 1789. Franklin writes about
his life as a key figure of American civilization. Equiano writes about his life as a slave and
abolitionist against slavery. The autobiographies of Ben Franklin and Olaudah ... Show more content

The authors also have different exigences for writing their autobiographies. Benjamin Franklin
wrote his autobiography to help citizens of America, and inform them on his life accomplishments.
Franklin wanted to help citizens prosper in their lives just like he did. Franklin gives tips and lays
out ways to be a better person throughout his autobiography. The main example of his exigence is
the virtues he explains. A few of the virtues Franklin explains are, " Order– Let all your things have
their places; let each part of your business have its time. Industry– Lose no time; be always
employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions. Tranquility– Be not disturbed at
trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable." Franklin includes these virtues in his autobiography
to provide the reader with ways to become a more successful person in life. Franklin wanted to give
readers of his autobiography an outline of how to become successful in life through a few quick and
easy steps. Olaudah Equiano's main exigence or purpose for writing his autobiography is to provide
the reader with knowledge of slavery. Equiano wanted everyone to know how cruel slavery was,
and how unfair and poorly slaves were treated. He did this through telling his story as a slave during
late 1700s. Equiano supports his purpose with

Autobiography Of Red David Geryon Analysis
Personally I feel that writing can be a great source in expressing our feelings, hopes, and dreams
that can't be conveyed through spoken words. Especially, looking at Autobiography of Red in which
Geryon used writing to document moments in his life and how he felt during that time. The only
down fall with writing is my case is organizes my thoughts to flow how I would like them to.
Personally I have grown to have a love–hate with reading. I love stories that are able to capture my
attention. However, texts that were written in old English or are hard to understand are more
difficult to want to read. Yet, reading regardless for leisure or business is a requirement and should
be utilized to the maximum.

Analysis Of The Book ' Black Rage ' Essay
This outburst is fueled by the kind of rage that bell hooks describes in Killing Rage. hooks asserts
that for white people, black rage "must always remain repressed, contained, trapped in the realm of
the unspeakable" (Killing Rage 12). She critiques black psychiatrists William Grier and Price
Cobbs, who wrote the book Black Rage and described such as a sign of powerlessness. hooks
argues: "they did not urge the larger culture to see black rage as something other than sickness, to
see it as a potentially healthy, potentially healing response to oppression and exploitation" (Killing
Rage 12). Because black rage was seen as something that could get black bodies murdered, it was
supposed to be contained and hidden. hooks' view of rage as something vital for the well–being of
black individuals is important in the context of Assata's autobiography. At one point, Assata states
that white people could never understand someone becoming a Black revolutionary because "they
had so little to revolt against" (119). Later on, in thinking back to having grown up in a segregated
south, she remarks: "If i sit and add up all the 'colored' toilets and drinking fountains in my life and
all of the back–of–the–buses or the Jim Crow railway cars or the places i couldn't go, it adds up to a
one great ball of anger" (138). Writing, then, serves as a form of exorcism, a way to cleanse out the
anger from the spirit by channeling it into a creative outlet. The book itself encompasses black rage

Family Stereotypes
The first images show my mother carrying me as a baby girl on our way home from the hospital,
and while cooking. These images represents my ideas and beliefs because I believe that it is
important for newborn babies to be very close to their parents, especially the mother. This also
represents the beliefs of my community because most Congolese people expect the mother to be the
closest, primary caregiver of a baby. Their function is to show that I was raised in a loving home
with loving parents who took, and continues to care for me and my needs. This images symbolize
the unbreakable bond, and love of my mother and I. In both pictures, I was not crying, and that
means that I felt safe, and I was comfortable in my mother's arms. The second ... Show more content

The pictures reveal that I was extremely happy because I just had reached a major milestone of my
life, and I made my parents proud of me. The images show me celebrating this important milestone
with my family who were there to support me. A few of my siblings are also pictured. Family has
always been important for me, I have nine siblings, and I have two parents. I considered my life
overly blessed because of my family, they are my source of strength and support; I do not think that
I would be here today without them. These images portray the beliefs and ideas of American Culture
because most important achievements or events are always celebrated with family, whether it is
thanksgiving or a wedding. Family is always there, and that makes whatever is being celebrated
more special. It is a ritual for my family to celebrate together every big events. These pictures
deliver a message of support and pride because although, I was the one who graduated, all of my
siblings were happy for me as if they were the ones graduating. The red cap and gown were my
regalia or costume of the night. It is a ritual for students in America to wear their school's color
during the graduation ceremony. It was very important for me to wear my regalia because it
represented my high school's colors red, and for my high school the color red symbolizes the word
"service". Not only did my red regalia show my achievement, but it also my pride as a Central High

12 Years A Slave
My choice of the movie 12 Years a Slave is an outstanding depiction of the lives of slaves in the
1840's. This film follows the gruesome life of Solomon Northup. A black man born free in Saratoga,
New York. Who was fooled, poisoned, and abducted by men who sold him into slavery. The movie
is based on the book called "Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of
New–York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853, From a Cotton Plantation
Near the Red River, in Louisiana."
The accuracy of the film was spot on. It depicted all the horrors and history of slavery very well. In
fact "Dr. Emily West, an associate professor of history at the University of Reading" supports my
statement when she states "I have never seen a film represent slavery so accurately." It portrayed the
difference of the masters by showing how one was kind to Northup and how the other was a "Nigger
Breaker." Also just as History says, slave owners justified their actions with the bible, and their
"Christian Duties." However, it did over emphasize Northup's social ... Show more content on

has shown me the gruesome details of the lives of slaves in the 1840's.
12 Years a Slave was an outstanding representation of the lives of a slave. It was accurate, heartfelt,
and detailed. It portrays the feelings of Solomon and the other slaves perfectly. The film really
makes you think about the people and the situation back in the 1840's. It is an exceptional historical
film that teaches you the slavery times and the life of Solomon Northup. A freeman turned to a slave

Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass' "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave" portrays
slavery's problems through the use of gruesome details, seeking to mainly inform the reader rather
than target their emotions, being a factual autobiography rather than a fictional story, and still
managing to have the progression of a fictional story regardless of it being true.
Because of this, I feel it is much more effectual in displaying the issues of slavery to the reader than
Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was in an overall comparison. Douglass'
autobiography is incredibly vivid and clear when it comes to bloody or painful scenes. One of the
most detailed examples being,
Before he commenced whipping Aunt Hester...He made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Next, the tone of Douglass' piece comes across as being matter–of–fact or focused on giving a
somewhat unbiased view of the story, despite it describing his life. This allows Douglass to go into
depth in a different way from "Uncle Tom's Cabin," and give a different point of view or describe
things that normally wouldn't come to mind.. At the very start of this work, we read,
A want of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness...the white children could
tell their ages. I could not tell why I ought to be deprived of the same privilege I was not allowed to
make any inquiries of my master concerning it. He deemed all such inquiries on the part of a slave
improper...(946.)
Here, Douglass simply portrays the facts of slaves being withheld from knowledge, even as basic as
their birthday, how seeking to gain knowledge is seen as a terrible thing for a slave to attempt, and, a
little bit beyond this section, how his father was white and possibly even his own slave master.
Throughout various sections of the piece, Douglass will place a paragraph showing something akin
to,"In August, 1832, my master attended a Methodist camp–meeting...and there experienced
religion...If it had any effect on his character,

Autobiography Of Red Geryon Analysis
Sometimes language is not enough to communicate with people, and sometimes you have to be able
to see to understand. This is the situation that Geryon finds himself in throughout the majority of his
life as narrated in the "Autobiography of Red". Geryon's autobiography is mostly narrated through
pictures and sculptures and rarely through verbal descriptions. This creates an interesting dynamic
throughout the story which often times causes confusion in trying to decipher the meaning of some
of the pictures. Geryon's use of his camera is a tool used by Anne Carson to communicate the
confusion and chaos that Geryon felt throughout the story. The camera depicts the type of life that
Geryon lives throughout the "Autobiography of Red". The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This confusion climaxes towards the end of the story when everything becomes picture descriptions
exclusively for the last couple chapters. These pictures show everything that Geryon is feeling and
seeing which ranges greatly from chapter to chapter. For example, one of the final chapters is
"Photographs: The Origin of Time" (217) which Geryon "thought seemed profound", but the next
picture is called "Jeats" (219), an accidental picture of Geryon's pant leg. Geryon meant for "Jeats"
(219) to be a picture of the guards, or more specifically "on their guns" (220). These two different
pictures are on opposite ends of the spectrum as far as feeling goes and it leaves the reader confused
and wondering where the connection between the two chapters is. This is extremely important
because it is what Anne Carson is trying to communicate throughout the story, chaos and
misunderstanding. The reader experiences constant confusion and misunderstanding throughout the
story, especially with the seemingly random picture descriptions, and this connects the reader to
Geryon in a way that would be difficult to do otherwise. Forming a connection with Geryon is
difficult because in ancient mythology Geryon is a monster and even in "Autobiography of Red"
Geryon appears to be a monster. He appears to be a monster because of his wings which make him
unique from the other characters in the story. However, Anne Carson clearly depicts Geryon as
confused and lost through the vast majority of the story. For example, Geryon is constantly asking
questions such as "Is it a question" (72), and later he asks "What is time made of" (147). These
questions illustrate how Geryon is always looking for answers to his life because he often feels lost.
The reader at points also becomes lost and confused trying to find connections where there appears
to be none. Confusion and

How does Charlotte Brounte Create Sympathy For Jane In...
How does Charlotte Brounte Create Sympathy For Jane In The First Two
Chapters Of The Novel?
Jane Eyre is a fictional autobiography which was written in 1848. It is about a young girl who is
abused and tortured by her aunt and cousins, (the people she lives with).
There are many ways that Charlotte Brounte creates sympathy for Jane in the first two chapters.
However the four main ways are: the setting, the language used, the structure of the chapters and
finally the social content.
In the first chapter, the setting is in a room where Jane is reading a book. The writer uses pathetic
fallacy in this chapter to describe the weather as well as how Jane is feeling. 'Chilly afternoons'
describes the weather which was then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However in the second chapter, the setting changes from cold and damp to more of a gothic setting
which is quite frightening. It is in this chapter, where Jane is locked into the Red Room. The reader
would feel more sympathy for Jane at this point because the Red Room symbolises death and scares
Jane a lot, (which is shown by her resistance to going into it). In the Red Room a gothic and
mysterious feeling is presented to the reader. This is shown in the colours described in the Red
Room such as 'red', 'crimson', 'pink' etc. All of these colours give Jane a dark feeling and represent
death and blood to her, as she already knows that her uncle's death had occurred in that room. The
atmosphere, that is created in that room is quiet and gives Jane the feeling of being lonely. This
creates sympathy as
Jane has no one and is alone. The Red Room overall creates darkness as the colours of the furniture
are 'darkly polished' and the blinds on the windows are 'always drawn down'. This adds and
emphasises the effect it has on Jane because she becomes more frightened.
Another way in which sympathy is created for Jane is through the language used to describe Jane
herself. Jane uses a lot of sarcasm when she describes her aunt and cousins. She uses words such as
'mama' and 'darlings' whenever she speaks about them. This creates
sympathy

The Noble Experiment By Jackie Robinson And Clara Barton:...
Biographies and autobiographies both show events of someone's life just like the two somewhat
similar stories like The Noble Experiment by Jackie Robinson as told to Alfred Duckett which is
memoir about the conflicts Jackie Robinson had to face when he was going from the Negro league
to the MLB and Clara Barton:Battlefield Nurse by Jeannette Covert Nolan which is documenting
how Clara Barton was underestimated being a women and trying to be a battlefield nurse while in a
form of a play. These both show similarities but these main difference are the genres of
autobiography and biography.
For example in The Noble Experiment it shows the genre of Autobiography. One of the main
reasons why it's an Autobiography is because of how the story addresses Jackie Robinson.
According to the text it states "I sat and watched him, not knowing what to until he began tearing at
one hand and with the other – just as if he were scratching his skin off his hand with his fingernails.
I was alarmed. I asked him what he was trying to do to himself." Throughout the text it has key
words that signify the P.O.V of the text is first person this manifests that this is an Autobiography
because in Autobiographies is shows the inner feelings of the subject and it uses first person words
to really materialize that. A second example in the story is how the ... Show more content on

Alexander Calder
Alexander Calder was one of the most innovative and original American artists of the twentieth
century. In 1926, Calder arrived in Paris and devoted himself to a project called the Circus that
occupied him for over five years. This contains characters and animals made out of wire, scraps of
cloth, wood, cork, labels, bits of scrap metal and pieces of rubber. Calder transported his little
theater in suitcases and performed it for his friends. During his performances, Calder invented ways
to simulate the flight of birds: "These are little bits of white paper, with a hole and slight weight on
each one, which flutter down several variously coiled thin steel wires which I jiggle so that they

experiences enhanced Calder's works. In 1926 he published Animal Sketching, a textbook to teach
drawing to beginners; he explored wood sculpture, creating The Horse (1928), and he made bronze
castings, such as The Cat (1930). His wire sculptures, such as the four Josephine Bakers, the heads
Edgar Varese and Fernand Leger, Acrobats, and Brass Family, were his new generation of works.
Calder's sculptures prove that he had observed and learned from Mondrian, Pablo Gargollo, Julio
Gonzalez, Laslo Mohly–Nagy, Roman Clemens, Naum Gabo, and Antoine Pevsner. Little Ball with
Counterweight (1931), Cruise/Universe (1931), and Spherique I/The Pistil (1930) were linear
sculptures, which extended his creation of wire portraits. During World War II, Calder reached his
artistic maturity, creating works that made him famous throughout the world. <br> <br>Alexander

Malcolm X 's Philosophy Of Black Pride, Black Nationalism,...
The Autobiography of Malcolm X informs the reader about Malcolm X's philosophy of black pride,
black nationalism, and pan–Africanism. There are a billion reasons to care when it comes to a book
about a human rights activist. I want to take a look at something more personal. There is always
time for change. Who would have thought that a little kid from the country who bounced around
between foster homes, detention centers, and jails would have done anything with his life? I might
have guessed that Malcolm X lived a life of crime until he died in a gunfight based on his history.
That did not happen. He changed. I can probably think of a million things that I want to change in
my life. Some of them probably seem impossible. That is okay. This book teaches me that there is
time for me to change my life as long as I am not dead. This little kid from Nebraska could do it and
so can I. Malcolm X only got six short years before his family was torn apart by the death of his
father and the nervous breakdown of his mother in the beginning. He and his siblings became wards
of the state. He started to dream of living in Boston when he met his half–sister Ella. Malcolm went
through all kinds of transformations in the next stage of his life. He started out as a wide–eyed
country bumpkin, turned into a big–time dancer, became a drug dealer, and landed in jail. In 1948
Malcolm's brother Philbert wrote to him that he had discovered the natural religion for the black

Love In Anne Bradstreet's Upon The Burning Of Our House
"To know that nothing hurts the godly, is a matter of comfort; but to be assured that all things which
fall out shall cooperate for their good, that their crosses shall be turned into blessings, that showers
of affliction water the withering root of their grace and make it flourish more; this may fill their
hearts with joy till they run over." In this quote, Thomas Watson explains to the people that
everything happens for a reason and that a person should be satisfied with that reason. "Upon the
Burning of Our House" by Anne Bradstreet, expresses a woman's emotional state of mind during the
burning of her house and the fate she has in God. The story "Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington
Irving, is about an unhappy married man that makes a pact with the devil that he eventually regrets.
In Ben Franklin's autobiography, it states Franklin's list of the thirteen virtues and his weekly plan
he had to accomplish them.
In Anne Bradstreet's poem, "Upon the Burning of Our House", it teaches the audience that even
though bad things happen, God will always be there for a person in the long run. Bradstreet was
feeling emotional about her house being up in flames, therefore she prays to God to help her out.
After a couple minutes Bradstreet realizes that it was God's intention to create this fire. She came to
the conclusion that what she had in her possession was not hers to begin with, it was God's.
Moreover, her real home is heaven. Bradstreet titles the poem, "Upon the Burning of our

The Autobiography Of Malcolm X Essay
Who is Malcolm X? Answers tend to vary by person but in the "Autobiography of Malcolm X", it
really delved into the pivotal details of his life and readers like myself, went on an enthralling
metaphorical journey to see the intriguing development of him as a child, a young adult, a convict, a
follower, and ultimately a leader. For starters, Malcolm X was not born with the infamous and
famous X. His birth name was Malcolm Little and the innocent Malcolm Little was very belittled
(pun intended) in majority of his social environments. At a young age, he experiences the pain of
losing his father. In retrospect, his father was just a dust in the wind. Malcolm's dad was like many
other socially active black males, who became inevitable victims that usually were murdered,
lynched, burned, etc by the white men in their area. Now, to lose one parent is already tough for
many individuals but Malcolm was only to be hammered with more bad news. His mother was sent
away by government workers to a mental institution because his house was deemed "unstable" (this
kind of stuff happened daily to many black families in similar housing situations like Malcolm was
in). But Malcolm directed his energy elsewhere. He ends up taking initiative in school and whilst
excelling, he ended up loving many aspects of education in America (or so he thought). He climbed
his way to become first in rank in his class and even became class president but his dreams was
simply crushed by many individuals. One of

Malcom X's Use Of Critical Thinking In The Critique Of...
In 1946 Malcolm Little was convicted of robbery and received a 10 year sentence in Charlestown
prison. Here he taught himself how to read and write, using materials provided by the prison's
library to aid in his education; consequently, he also learned about the racial injustices throughout
history. After 7 years, Malcolm X was granted parole and released from prison and joined the Civil
Rights Movement under the name Malcolm X. In a section of his autobiography Malcolm X argues
the importance of critical thinking in educational and research purposes. Critical thinking allows the
reader to gauge whether the information gained from a particular source can be accepted as fact,
depending on how it fits into the information given by other sources. He uses his experiences, the
texts that he used in his education, pathos arguments, and metaphor to further his point. The use of
narrative as the medium forces Malcolm X to rely heavily on the experiences he had while studying
in prison to provide support for his argument. He provides sufficient evidence on how he thinks the
history of colored society should be portrayed and this is shown with a list of texts that he has read
during the course of his prison studies. One of the texts Malcolm X describes provides strong
examples of historical events that are not mentioned in the United States. The piece Sex and Race

Ontological Security In Anne Carson's Autobiography Of Red
Anne Carson's novel, Autobiography of Red, can be looked at as the example to the claims that R.D.
Laing makes in his novel, The Divided Self, about ontological security and insecurity. This book
discusses the study of human situations, specifically the ontological anxiety of a schizophrenic in
relation to existentialism. In these two ways of existing(ontological security and insecurity), there
are core differences. A character from Carson's novel, Geryon, experiences both of these mental
states throughout his story. In this novel, we follow Geryon through love and heartbreak, coming of
age, abuse, and death. We can view the life of a boy in childhood to a man in adulthood who has

It is the thought that another person can rob you of your own subjectivity, and turn you into a 'thing'
or an object. To defend against this anxiety, the patient will treat others like objects instead.
Petrified, in a literal sense, means "turned to stone." Laing points out that the patient is in fear of
being turning into a thing instead of the subject: the "it" instead of the "I". I'm not sure if Geryon
was fully experiencing depersonalization or petrification when he was viewing the picture of the
volcano Herakles grandmother took, but I think it is a good example of the confusion that can lead
to this fear. Garyon is stumbled and perplexed by the photo, it is a simple photo and it was
appealing, but he still couldn't grasp something about it. Garyon says "What if you took a fifteen

supposed to be the object and the person is supposed to be the subject, however I am not sure if
Geryon is thinking of it this way, or if the grandmother is thinking of it this way. I think Carson may
have left that up to the readers to decide since there are not many hints in that

The Autobiography of Malcolm X
Literary Analysis: The Autobiography of Malcolm X The Autobiography of Malcolm X, told by
Alex Haley, details the incredible journey of one of the most inspiration and life altering leaders the
world has ever encountered. The book begins with the illustration of Malcolm's early life
experiences and ends with X predicting that he will die a violent death prior to seeing the
publication of his autobiography. At the beginning of the book, Haley describes how Malcolm's
father, a Baptist Minister, played an enormous role in his life. He taught Malcolm how be a strong
independent man and provided him with a structure of beliefs. Most of his beliefs came from the
teachings of Marcus Garvey, the founder of the U.N.I.A (Universal Negro Improvement
Association), which was dedicated to raise the banner of black purity and exhorting the Negro
masses to return to their ancestral African homeland. Haley then moves on to explain how Malcolm
and his family faced a lot of discrimination throughout their lives. X even drops out of school at age
15 because his teachers told him that a black man will never become a lawyer. Malcolm would then
go down a slippery slope using and selling drugs. Haley does a magnificent job of portraying the
many transformations that Malcolm went through. X went through three major transformation that
lead him to become the thought provoking leader that he will forever be remembered as. The three

adequate job in relaying the life of Malcolm X according to the autobiography collaboratively

Malcolm he used to write his book. Malcolm would come to Haley's hotel room and Haley would
interview him. Additionally, Malcolm had a habit of scribbling down thoughts as they would talk
and Haley would collect them after their meetings. However, Malcolm's opinion on the developing

was appalled when they were soon returned, red–inked in many places where he had told of his

him of his previous decision, and I stressed that if those chapters contained such telegraphing to
readers of what would lie ahead, then the book would automatically be robbed of some of its

Malcolm eventually relents to Haley's concerns and the book stayed as Haley had written. Haley
then goes on to explain "I never again gave him chapters to review unless I was with him. Several
times I would covertly watch him frown and wince as he read, but he never again asked for any

tea from the Chongs as gifts to my family, and some marbles which were an enormous hit among
my brothers and friends" (pg 169). Li's family never had sweets or jasmine tea, yet the Chongs had
enough to give away to another family. When Li went to America and saw how the people from the
West lived, he finds it unbelievable. "Ben spent nearly $5000 on presents in a couple of hours...My
family could live on this amount for over half a century. It was shocking" (pg 277). Everything in
America was so different to life in China. It was also different to how China portrayed

Subjective Reality in Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red...
Subjective Reality in Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red
Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red is a world of subjective reality. Carson explores the
relationship between subject and object through a reworking of an original Greek myth. The original
myth is of Herakles, who's tenth labor was to kill Geryon, a red winged monster who lived on an
island, and steal his cattle. Carson takes the insignificant character of Geryon and creates a story
based on his life, as if set in modern times. Autobiography of Red enters a world of ambiguity,
where all objects are challenged and made into subjects. Geryon is the subject of Autobiography of
Red. The title alone delineates the fact that Geryon writes this story about himself. It is ... Show

Although Geryon is making a waste of a fairly significant amount of money, his mother does not
stop him. He creates his autobiography as he wants it and on his own terms. Geryon is not being
objectified in his autobiography by being told how to create it. Geryon truly writes his own
autobiography. Geryon is a subjective character. He is removed from the rest of the world and is
therefore not subject to its reality. He is subject only to his own. This is immediately apparent
through the fact that he is red and has wings. Geryon is the only character in the novel who is
physically different from the others. It is not a feasible idea to have a person who is red and has
wings. This makes him a subjective character because he is unlike the rest and challenges the
convention of the typical human character. Even the reality of a corridor is a completely different
reality for Geryon: "Between Main Door and Kindergarten ran a corridor. To Geryon it was / a
hundred thousand miles / of thunder tunnels and indoor neon sky slammed open by giants." (24).
What is for most a simple corridor is extremely terrifying for Geryon. The objective reality of the
corridor as merely a walkway between the main door and kindergarten becomes a subjective reality

Benjamin Franklin As A Representation Of The Enlightenment
Wade Cobb

19 October 2015
Benjamin Franklin as a Representation of the Enlightenment The Enlightenment was largely a
rational response to the 16th and 17th century Scientific Revolution, as well as major developments
in philosophical thinking, such as ideas proposed by Rene Descartes. During the Enlightenment,
thinkers emphasize rational and critical ways of thinking, rather than the complete reliance on
religion that had been previously accepted. In many ways, Benjamin Franklin was the human
embodiment of the Age of Enlightenment. Similarly to the Enlightenment as a time period,
Benjamin Franklin is influenced by, but strays from his upbringing in a strict Puritan context in
order to establish beliefs based on reason and the scientific method. Franklin used highly thought
out and methodological techniques for deciding things from a daily schedule all the way to his
views on morality and virtue. He was a life long learner, and like the Age of Enlightenment itself, he
put reason as the ultimate factor for knowledge and decision–making.
Corresponding to the Enlightenment, Franklin was affected by his Christian background. His
parents were devout Puritans, and being raised in their household, the Christian outlook left its mark
on certain aspects of Franklin's beliefs. For example, in his letter to the Yale University President
Ezra Stiles in 1790 reveals an important commonality in his beliefs in relation to Puritan, and other

Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass Rhetorical...
America's history will be scarred forever by the evils of slavery which once existed here. Slaves
lived lives of pain and hardship. But some, like the slave and later abolitionist Frederick Douglass,
rose up from the tribulations of slavery and led the way for progress and change in America. In his
autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass", Douglass tells his inspiring yet
harrowing story of his life as a slave in Maryland and his escape to freedom in New York and later
Massachusetts, where he eventually became an abolitionist. Douglass masterfully uses ethos,
pathos, and logos to craft his powerful narrative that exposes to his audience, the American people,
the horrors, absurdity, and hypocrisy of slavery. Douglass's ... Show more content on

Using pathos, Douglass also is able to establish parts of his tone. When describing the whippings
and how slaves were treated like animals, any reasonable person would expect Douglass to be
enraged. He likely was, but he kept a calm, cool, collected and almost political tone. If he had let
this anger show, he too would've likely been seen as an 'animal'. These qualities of Douglass's tone
are even more evident when he employs ethos. Douglass uses ethos to establish his credibility. In
fact, establishing his credibility is the very first thing Douglass does. During his lifetime, the word
of a black man meant nothing without a white man's testimony. (Douglass brings that up in chapter
ten.) So Douglass begins his book with a preface by William Lloyd Garrison, a white man who was
very involved in anti–slavery movements. Even though we don't need this to comprehend his
credibility, Douglass's audience at the time would have.
More importantly, Douglass also improves his credibility through his own writing. Douglass humbly
discusses how he learned to be literate while still a slave by bargaining with white children. Being a
literate slave would be a huge mark of credibility during the period. Douglass goes so far as to call it
his "pathway to freedom". The moment he realizes the power of his literacy is quite amazing. "That
which to him was a great evil, to be carefully shunned, was to be a great good, to be diligently
sought," Douglass says. Not only was he able to

How Did Clara Barton Contribute To The American Red Cross
Clara Barton was famous for being the founder of the American Red Cross organization. She was
known as "an angel of the battlefield" for helping wounded soldiers during combat. Her life was
devoted to caring and assisting others. Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821, and was
raised in North Oxford, Massachusetts. Barton was acknowledged for putting her life in danger to
support and help soldiers, and for establishing an organization called the American Red Cross. The
American Red Cross provides emergency assistance, just as Barton did for her soldiers. When

also a volunteer for soldiers, which inspired her to do the same. Her oldest brother Stephen's
favorite memory of Clara, was when he stood up for her when she was being denied the right to

and was Clara's first patient. Throughout 1833 and 1835, she stayed home from school to care for
David for two years. During the little free time Barton had, she enjoyed writing books as a hobby.
Her most acknowledged work was an autobiography titled "The Story of My Childhood," which
was published in 1907. In the autobiography, we learn about Clara's life and childhood. Clara's other
books are about her experiences during combat. An unknown fact about Barton was that she
strongly believed in humans rights. She was against slavery and wanted equality for women. After
building her own public school in New Jersey, her community decided to build another school. The
community hired a man and paid him twice her salary. Barton then quit and stated, "I may
sometimes be willing to teach for nothing, but if paid at all, I shall never do a man's work for less
than a man's pay." Barton had also met up with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to

Throughout various sections of the piece, Douglass will place a paragraph showing something akin
to,"In August, 1832, my master attended a Methodist camp–meeting...and there experienced
religion...If it had any effect on his character,

for three years in Vietnam. After that, he could come back home to his other sibling which they were
waiting for him. Henry did not have the emotional stability that he used to have before the going to

realized the purpose of her story while she is reading throughout the story. For instance, at the
beginning of the story, Henry with his brother Lyman bought the Red convertible. They were a very
happy family that they made a road trip with their in the summer as Erdrich wrote " We'd made most
of the trip, without putting up the car hood at all. We got home just in time" (327). She could have
addressed that Henry was the active and happy person before going to war.
1. Is the writer trying to entertain or to educate?
Edrich entertains the audience with her book. However, the book is education people in so many
ways. She described an American–Native family. The reason perhaps is that because she is half an
American–Native from her mother side. She used her heritage to develop her characters so that her
characters in the books which are also Native American are also are real. Thus, when something is
real people get educated maybe not in a direct way, but it can be the indirect way.

Malcolm X's Use Of Rhetorical Patterns In My First Conk
Rhetorical Patterns in My First Conk In the excerpt from, "The Autobiography of Malcolm X
(1994)", titled, "My First Conk", Malcolm X used the rhetorical pattern of description to paint a
picture of the scene in the reader's mind, he used process to thoughtfully describe each step and
build suspense, and finally, he used narration to connect with the readers. Malcolm X used the
device of description in his autobiography in order to paint a picture in the reader's mind so that one
can better understand the context, the overall situation, and in this case, the result of his project. An
example of his use of description is in paragraph 17, where Malcolm wrote, "And on top of my head
was this thick, smooth sheen of shining red hair– real red– as straight as any white man's". This is an
example of description because it uses expressive word choice which helps one to have a thorough
understanding of how the author wants to portray the scene. Using description helped Malcolm X to
enhance his message because it shows to the readers all of the details that he wants us to know about
what he was aiming for in this time of his life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He used process to completely describe each step and to build suspense during the scene. An
example where Malcolm used this pattern is in paragraphs 2 and 5, where he wrote, "I took the little
list of ingredients he had printed out for me, and went to a grocery store, where I got a can... He
peeled the potatoes and thin–sliced them into a quart–sized Mason fruit jar". This example
demonstrates the rhetorical pattern process in that it explains in each of the steps that it took
Malcolm in order to complete the task that he had planned, as well as the fact that it built up
suspense to the final results. In using the pattern of process, Malcolm X enhanced his message by
organizing his story, and by giving the reader more context so that the message is

Her sickness could be compared with the struggle of slaves during their lives, as a test to their
survival. Annie's view of her mother could be compared to the way the slaves viewed their owners.
The reconciliation between Annie and her mother could be compared to the slaves beginning to
work for their owners for pay after the emancipation. Annie's departure from Antigua, and the
imprisonment of her mother, could be compared to the end of slavery, and the slaves leaving the
control of their owners. The main purpose of this autobiography is to inform the reader of the
struggles that occur in mother daughter relationships during maturation and puberty. It also informs
the reader about the purpose of a mother figure for a daughter in hard times of relationships and
health. It is very effective in informing the reader by using small situations throughout a young girl's
childhood and teenage years. It also stresses the negative things that can occur and potentially a
relationship between a mother and daughter if the mother's position is not played correctly. Another
main point that the story brings out is that even though mothers and daughters can experience
differences, those differences are able to be embraced and overcome. Eventually, these differences
may result in a stronger relationship between the two. In conclusion, relationships may not be

Essay on Song of Solomon: A Bildungsroman of Milkman
It can be said that Song of Solomon is bildungsroman which is defined by The Encyclopedia
Britannica as "a class of novel that deals with the [coming–of–age or] formative years of an
individual". Furthermore, in a bildungsroman, a main protagonist usually undergoes some
transformation after seeking truth or philosophical enlightenment. In Morrison's novel, the plot
follows the main protagonist Milkman as he matures within his community while developing
relationships with others and discovering his individual identity. In an essay titled Call and
Response, Marilyn Sanders Mobley notes that "What Song of Solomon does ultimately is suggest

Smith had learned earlier–that only birds and airplanes could fly" (Morrison 9). Morrison writes that
Milkman loses all interest in himself at that point. This incident is complementary to an episode in
The Autobiography of Malcolm X when Mr. Ostrowski, a teacher of Malcolm X's, tells Malcolm
that becoming "a lawyer...is no realistic goal for a nigger" (X 41). In both cases, each individual
thereafter tries to pursue a more mainstream view of self–identity. Further observation of the two
men aligns closely with identities of American ideals of wealth, prosperity, and Western culture.
Initially, Milkman's journey leads him down a path that resembles cultural influences of mainstream
America. This is the same direction in which his father, Macon Dead, Jr. navigates his life–seeking
wealth, prosperity, and likeness to White Americans while remaining undisturbed by the problems
inherent to his community. Milkman tries to imitate this characteristic of his father's until he grows
older and realizes that one of his legs is shorter than the other which requires him to walk with a
limp. At fourteen, "Milkman feared his father, respected him, but knew, because of his leg, that he
could never emulate him" (Morrison 63). Once again Milkman's sense of identity is stumped and
while he tries to imitate his father, he becomes different, nonetheless, in his behaviors.
Milkman's journey for an identity takes him down a road in which he becomes as callous as his
father.

Elie Wiesel has experienced a horrible tragedy. When he repeatedly says over and over "Never shall

express it in different ways. Dali's painting depicts death with the washed up creature and the

about them. She speaks the fondest of the people like Picasso who she likes best and does not say
much about other artists like Cézanne who she is not very fond of. E.E Cummings Book The
Enormous Room is not only original and interesting like Stein states, but it can be used to better
understand Steins The AutoBiography of Alice B. Toklas. In the last chapter of The Autobiography
of Alice B Toklas, Stein mentions both her's and Hemingway's opinions ... Show more content on

Cummings and Stein have more similarities than one thinks, for example, their writing styles are
both difficult to understand when first reading but they are both effective in conveying their
message whether their ways are unconventional or not. It is evident that Cummings background in
poetry influenced the prose style of his writing. For example chapter, two begins with "I put the
bed–roll down. I stood up. I was myself." (page 62). Not only does this resemble poetry because of
the imagery portrayed by just these few words but it also effectively conveys his message. They are
also similar in their writing styles because they both use portraits to portray the people that surround
them. While Cummings focuses on describing their physical appearance to paint a picture of both
the characters mental and physical state, stein uses the painters and writers work as well as their
physical appearance to paint this picture. Reading Cummings novel made it easier to understand
Steins writing style because they are both similar in the sense that they are both breaking the mold
by using unconventional punctuation and syntax. It also makes the reader appreciate it for its
uniqueness and in a way it is like art because she and Cummings both reject the traditional
autobiography format and make their writing their own. Stein uses Alice B. Toklas as her voice and
Cummings uses his narrator who he calls "C." I also understand better why Stein chose a different
voice to write this piece that can be considered her autobiography just as much as it can be
considered Toklas'. It is because it give a different kind of authority to this writing and makes it
seem less

Essay On The Autobiography Of Malcolm X
The Autobiography of Malcolm X written by Malcolm X and Alex Haley is exactly what it sounds
like; the story of Malcolm's life.
The novel details Malcolm's early life in a racially discriminatory America. It expands on Malcolm's
difficulty childhood dealing with the death of his father and constant threats from the KKK.
Malcolm explains how he had to become a hustler to survive and finds himself in the Nation of
Islam. The Muslim community ultimately leads to his demise when he is shot down by a black
Muslim at one of his speeches. The tone of the book is full of passion and anger.
One of the themes in the autobiography is that views and people change. Malcolm changed his
identity multiple times throughout the book, he was Malcolm Little, Detroit Red, Satan, Malcolm X,
and he later on even developed a Muslim name. Not only that, Malcolm frequently changed his
philosophies in racism. At first he believed whites ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The conk was a hairstyle worn by blacks to straighten the hair and make it appear more like a white
persons. This represents the conformity to the racist white society. Malcolm had to change an aspect
of himself to receive more respect. In addition, this shows Malcolm's hatred of his blackness and his
self suppression. By wearing this hairstyle he was trying to be something other than himself. He
didn't want to adorn black features and wished to be more like a white man and have the same
privileges. Another symbol in the book was Malcolm changing his last name from Little to X. Little
was his slave name and by changing it, he is declaring his freedom and deciding his own path.
Furthermore, Malcolm being release from prison and purchasing new items expresses his change of
lifestyle. Him leaving prison represents him leaving a different mindset behind and entering a new
one. The purchase of the new items shows his commitment to becoming a changed man and not
going back to his criminal

Comparison Of My Life And Angela's Ashes '
Sir Isaac Newton once wrote "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
And autobiographies and biographies indeed allows us to look further down the path through the life
experiences that great people have achieved. They tell us of the lives of real people, real events and
real experiences which have occurred in history. Stories that reflected incidents that were salient in
one's life, recounting their progress through the path towards possibly achieving something
significant in human history. This teaches us, with a realistic approach, of the opportunities and
challenges one has faced to reach where they are today. [Greeting] Helen Keller's The Story of my
Life and Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes are prime examples ... Show more content on

One of the most significant lines in Angela's Ashes is the introduction, written from the adult
perspective of McCourt: "It was, of course, a miserable childhood... and worse yet is the miserable
Irish Catholic childhood... the poverty; the shiftless loquacious alcoholic father; the pious defeated
mother moaning by the fire; pompous priests; bullying schoolmasters..." It is his bitter attitude
conveyed with the usage of words with negative connotations as well as alliteration of "mother
moaning" and "pompous priests" to emphasise the suffering he had experienced during his
childhood which greatly contrasts with the latter part of the autobiography which uses a good–
natured attitude to balance the bleakness of his life. This shows his change of outlook towards his
past despite the pain he has felt. In both Angela's Ashes and The Story of My Life, their inner
thoughts resonated within the readers through their usage of emotive language to convey their
experiences. Keller's writing style consists of mainly emotional paragraphs where her inner thoughts
greatly reveal how she felt at the time and in turn touches the hearts of the audience further than any
novel could. "We would sit together of an evening and listen to the inner melodies of the spirit... But
in college there is no time to commune with one's thoughts... When one enters the portals of
learning, one leaves the dearest pleasures... I am improvident enough to prefer present joy to
hoarding riches against a rainy day." Again, the use of words with positive and negative
connotations are evident throughout the text allowing us to grasp her feelings as she compares her
free past life to the restriction of education. The revelation of the inner thoughts of the author
establishes a relationship where the readers

Langston Hughes When Sue Wears Red Analysis

  • 1. Langston Hughes When Sue Wears Red Analysis I can understand why Langston Hughes was often called the best poet laureate of Harlem; he really was that good. I found all of his poetry inspired deeper analysis and thought, even after I book down. One of my favorites was "When Sue Wears Red". Red is an energetic color, it is eye–popping and is generally considered an attraction enhancer. It is widely known that when one wants attention, they should add a bit of red to their wardrobe. Her beauty shines so bright when she wears red that he likens her to an antique cameo; something that is often considered a treasure by those who collect them. He likens her to an Egyptian Queen; what woman wouldn't want to be likened to a queen? But my favorite was when he wrote, "And the beauty of Susanna ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Benjamin Franklin And Olaudah Equiano Benjamin Franklin and Olaudah Equiano lived during the same time period. Franklin was one of the founding fathers of the Untied States, and his commitment to making his country better was remarkable. Benjamin Franklin wrote his autobiography from 1771– 1791. Franklin passed away before he was able to see his autobiography published in 1791. Olaudah Equiano was a young boy when he was kidnapped and sold into slavery. He was forced to work on naval vessels and on plantations in Virginia. Equiano published his interesting narrative in 1789. Franklin writes about his life as a key figure of American civilization. Equiano writes about his life as a slave and abolitionist against slavery. The autobiographies of Ben Franklin and Olaudah ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The authors also have different exigences for writing their autobiographies. Benjamin Franklin wrote his autobiography to help citizens of America, and inform them on his life accomplishments. Franklin wanted to help citizens prosper in their lives just like he did. Franklin gives tips and lays out ways to be a better person throughout his autobiography. The main example of his exigence is the virtues he explains. A few of the virtues Franklin explains are, " Order– Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time. Industry– Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions. Tranquility– Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable." Franklin includes these virtues in his autobiography to provide the reader with ways to become a more successful person in life. Franklin wanted to give readers of his autobiography an outline of how to become successful in life through a few quick and easy steps. Olaudah Equiano's main exigence or purpose for writing his autobiography is to provide the reader with knowledge of slavery. Equiano wanted everyone to know how cruel slavery was, and how unfair and poorly slaves were treated. He did this through telling his story as a slave during late 1700s. • 3. Autobiography Of Red David Geryon Analysis Personally I feel that writing can be a great source in expressing our feelings, hopes, and dreams that can't be conveyed through spoken words. Especially, looking at Autobiography of Red in which Geryon used writing to document moments in his life and how he felt during that time. The only down fall with writing is my case is organizes my thoughts to flow how I would like them to. Personally I have grown to have a love–hate with reading. I love stories that are able to capture my attention. However, texts that were written in old English or are hard to understand are more difficult to want to read. • 4. Analysis Of The Book ' Black Rage ' Essay This outburst is fueled by the kind of rage that bell hooks describes in Killing Rage. hooks asserts that for white people, black rage "must always remain repressed, contained, trapped in the realm of the unspeakable" (Killing Rage 12). She critiques black psychiatrists William Grier and Price Cobbs, who wrote the book Black Rage and described such as a sign of powerlessness. hooks argues: "they did not urge the larger culture to see black rage as something other than sickness, to see it as a potentially healthy, potentially healing response to oppression and exploitation" (Killing Rage 12). Because black rage was seen as something that could get black bodies murdered, it was supposed to be contained and hidden. hooks' view of rage as something vital for the well–being of black individuals is important in the context of Assata's autobiography. At one point, Assata states that white people could never understand someone becoming a Black revolutionary because "they had so little to revolt against" (119). Later on, in thinking back to having grown up in a segregated south, she remarks: "If i sit and add up all the 'colored' toilets and drinking fountains in my life and all of the back–of–the–buses or the Jim Crow railway cars or the places i couldn't go, it adds up to a one great ball of anger" (138). Writing, then, serves as a form of exorcism, a way to cleanse out the anger from the spirit by channeling it into a creative outlet. The book itself encompasses black rage from ... These images represents my ideas and beliefs because I believe that it is important for newborn babies to be very close to their parents, especially the mother. This also represents the beliefs of my community because most Congolese people expect the mother to be the closest, primary caregiver of a baby. Their function is to show that I was raised in a loving home with loving parents who took, and continues to care for me and my needs. The images show me celebrating this important milestone with my family who were there to support me. A few of my siblings are also pictured. Family has always been important for me, I have nine siblings, and I have two parents. I considered my life overly blessed because of my family, they are my source of strength and support; I do not think that I would be here today without them. These images portray the beliefs and ideas of American Culture because most important achievements or events are always celebrated with family, whether it is thanksgiving or a wedding. Family is always there, and that makes whatever is being celebrated more special. It is a ritual for my family to celebrate together every big events. These pictures deliver a message of support and pride because although, I was the one who graduated, all of my siblings were happy for me as if they were the ones graduating. The red cap and gown were my regalia or costume of the night. It is a ritual for students in America to wear their school's color during the graduation ceremony. It was very important for me to wear my regalia because it represented my high school's colors red, and for my high school the color red symbolizes the word "service". The movie is based on the book called "Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New–York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853, From a Cotton Plantation Near the Red River, in Louisiana." The accuracy of the film was spot on. It depicted all the horrors and history of slavery very well. In fact "Dr. Emily West, an associate professor of history at the University of Reading" supports my statement when she states "I have never seen a film represent slavery so accurately." It portrayed the difference of the masters by showing how one was kind to Northup and how the other was a "Nigger Breaker." Also just as History says, slave owners justified their actions with the bible, and their "Christian Duties." However, it did over emphasize Northup's social ... • 7. Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass' "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave" portrays slavery's problems through the use of gruesome details, seeking to mainly inform the reader rather than target their emotions, being a factual autobiography rather than a fictional story, and still managing to have the progression of a fictional story regardless of it being true. Because of this, I feel it is much more effectual in displaying the issues of slavery to the reader than Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was in an overall comparison. Douglass' autobiography is incredibly vivid and clear when it comes to bloody or painful scenes. One of the most detailed examples being, Before he commenced whipping Aunt Hester...He made ... • 8. Autobiography Of Red Geryon Analysis Sometimes language is not enough to communicate with people, and sometimes you have to be able to see to understand. This is the situation that Geryon finds himself in throughout the majority of his life as narrated in the "Autobiography of Red". Geryon's autobiography is mostly narrated through pictures and sculptures and rarely through verbal descriptions. This creates an interesting dynamic throughout the story which often times causes confusion in trying to decipher the meaning of some of the pictures. Geryon's use of his camera is a tool used by Anne Carson to communicate the confusion and chaos that Geryon felt throughout the story. The camera depicts the type of life that Geryon lives throughout the "Autobiography of Red". The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This confusion climaxes towards the end of the story when everything becomes picture descriptions exclusively for the last couple chapters. These pictures show everything that Geryon is feeling and seeing which ranges greatly from chapter to chapter. For example, one of the final chapters is "Photographs: The Origin of Time" (217) which Geryon "thought seemed profound", but the next picture is called "Jeats" (219), an accidental picture of Geryon's pant leg. Geryon meant for "Jeats" (219) to be a picture of the guards, or more specifically "on their guns" (220). These two different pictures are on opposite ends of the spectrum as far as feeling goes and it leaves the reader confused and wondering where the connection between the two chapters is. This is extremely important because it is what Anne Carson is trying to communicate throughout the story, chaos and misunderstanding. The reader experiences constant confusion and misunderstanding throughout the story, especially with the seemingly random picture descriptions, and this connects the reader to Geryon in a way that would be difficult to do otherwise. Forming a connection with Geryon is difficult because in ancient mythology Geryon is a monster and even in "Autobiography of Red" Geryon appears to be a monster. He appears to be a monster because of his wings which make him unique from the other characters in the story. However, Anne Carson clearly depicts Geryon as confused and lost through the vast majority of the story. For example, Geryon is constantly asking questions such as "Is it a question" (72), and later he asks "What is time made of" (147). These questions illustrate how Geryon is always looking for answers to his life because he often feels lost. The reader at points also becomes lost and confused trying to find connections where there appears to be none. Confusion and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. How does Charlotte Brounte Create Sympathy For Jane In... How does Charlotte Brounte Create Sympathy For Jane In The First Two Chapters Of The Novel? Jane Eyre is a fictional autobiography which was written in 1848. It is about a young girl who is abused and tortured by her aunt and cousins, (the people she lives with). There are many ways that Charlotte Brounte creates sympathy for Jane in the first two chapters. However the four main ways are: the setting, the language used, the structure of the chapters and finally the social content. In the first chapter, the setting is in a room where Jane is reading a book. The writer uses pathetic fallacy in this chapter to describe the weather as well as how Jane is feeling. However in the second chapter, the setting changes from cold and damp to more of a gothic setting which is quite frightening. It is in this chapter, where Jane is locked into the Red Room. The reader would feel more sympathy for Jane at this point because the Red Room symbolises death and scares Jane a lot, (which is shown by her resistance to going into it). In the Red Room a gothic and mysterious feeling is presented to the reader. This is shown in the colours described in the Red Room such as 'red', 'crimson', 'pink' etc. All of these colours give Jane a dark feeling and represent death and blood to her, as she already knows that her uncle's death had occurred in that room. The atmosphere, that is created in that room is quiet and gives Jane the feeling of being lonely. This creates sympathy as Jane has no one and is alone. The Red Room overall creates darkness as the colours of the furniture are 'darkly polished' and the blinds on the windows are 'always drawn down'. This adds and emphasises the effect it has on Jane because she becomes more frightened. Another way in which sympathy is created for Jane is through the language used to describe Jane herself. Jane uses a lot of sarcasm when she describes her aunt and cousins. She uses words such as 'mama' and 'darlings' whenever she speaks about them. This creates sympathy ... • 10. The Noble Experiment By Jackie Robinson And Clara Barton:... Biographies and autobiographies both show events of someone's life just like the two somewhat similar stories like The Noble Experiment by Jackie Robinson as told to Alfred Duckett which is memoir about the conflicts Jackie Robinson had to face when he was going from the Negro league to the MLB and Clara Barton:Battlefield Nurse by Jeannette Covert Nolan which is documenting how Clara Barton was underestimated being a women and trying to be a battlefield nurse while in a form of a play. These both show similarities but these main difference are the genres of autobiography and biography. For example in The Noble Experiment it shows the genre of Autobiography. One of the main reasons why it's an Autobiography is because of how the story addresses Jackie Robinson. According to the text it states "I sat and watched him, not knowing what to until he began tearing at one hand and with the other – just as if he were scratching his skin off his hand with his fingernails. I was alarmed. I asked him what he was trying to do to himself." The Autobiography of Malcolm X informs the reader about Malcolm X's philosophy of black pride, black nationalism, and pan–Africanism. There are a billion reasons to care when it comes to a book about a human rights activist. I want to take a look at something more personal. There is always time for change. Who would have thought that a little kid from the country who bounced around between foster homes, detention centers, and jails would have done anything with his life? I might have guessed that Malcolm X lived a life of crime until he died in a gunfight based on his history. That did not happen. He changed. I can probably think of a million things that I want to change in my life. Some of them probably seem impossible. That is okay. This book teaches me that there is time for me to change my life as long as I am not dead. This little kid from Nebraska could do it and so can I. Love In Anne Bradstreet's Upon The Burning Of Our House "To know that nothing hurts the godly, is a matter of comfort; but to be assured that all things which fall out shall cooperate for their good, that their crosses shall be turned into blessings, that showers of affliction water the withering root of their grace and make it flourish more; this may fill their hearts with joy till they run over." In this quote, Thomas Watson explains to the people that everything happens for a reason and that a person should be satisfied with that reason. "Upon the Burning of Our House" by Anne Bradstreet, expresses a woman's emotional state of mind during the burning of her house and the fate she has in God. Bradstreet was feeling emotional about her house being up in flames, therefore she prays to God to help her out. After a couple minutes Bradstreet realizes that it was God's intention to create this fire. She came to the conclusion that what she had in her possession was not hers to begin with, it was God's. Answers tend to vary by person but in the "Autobiography of Malcolm X", it really delved into the pivotal details of his life and readers like myself, went on an enthralling metaphorical journey to see the intriguing development of him as a child, a young adult, a convict, a follower, and ultimately a leader. For starters, Malcolm X was not born with the infamous and famous X. His birth name was Malcolm Little and the innocent Malcolm Little was very belittled (pun intended) in majority of his social environments. At a young age, he experiences the pain of losing his father. In retrospect, his father was just a dust in the wind. Malcolm's dad was like many other socially active black males, who became inevitable victims that usually were murdered, lynched, burned, etc by the white men in their area. Now, to lose one parent is already tough for many individuals but Malcolm was only to be hammered with more bad news. His mother was sent away by government workers to a mental institution because his house was deemed "unstable" (this kind of stuff happened daily to many black families in similar housing situations like Malcolm was in). But Malcolm directed his energy elsewhere. He ends up taking initiative in school and whilst excelling, he ended up loving many aspects of education in America (or so he thought). He climbed his way to become first in rank in his class and even became class president but his dreams was simply crushed by many individuals. One of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Here he taught himself how to read and write, using materials provided by the prison's library to aid in his education; consequently, he also learned about the racial injustices throughout history. After 7 years, Malcolm X was granted parole and released from prison and joined the Civil Rights Movement under the name Malcolm X. In a section of his autobiography Malcolm X argues the importance of critical thinking in educational and research purposes. Critical thinking allows the reader to gauge whether the information gained from a particular source can be accepted as fact, depending on how it fits into the information given by other sources. He uses his experiences, the texts that he used in his education, pathos arguments, and metaphor to further his point. The use of narrative as the medium forces Malcolm X to rely heavily on the experiences he had while studying in prison to provide support for his argument. He provides sufficient evidence on how he thinks the history of colored society should be portrayed and this is shown with a list of texts that he has read during the course of his prison studies. The Autobiography of Malcolm X Literary Analysis: The Autobiography of Malcolm X The Autobiography of Malcolm X, told by Alex Haley, details the incredible journey of one of the most inspiration and life altering leaders the world has ever encountered. The book begins with the illustration of Malcolm's early life experiences and ends with X predicting that he will die a violent death prior to seeing the publication of his autobiography. At the beginning of the book, Haley describes how Malcolm's father, a Baptist Minister, played an enormous role in his life. He taught Malcolm how be a strong independent man and provided him with a structure of beliefs. Most of his beliefs came from the teachings of Marcus Garvey, the founder of the U.N.I.A (Universal Negro Improvement Association), which was dedicated to raise the banner of black purity and exhorting the Negro masses to return to their ancestral African homeland. Haley then moves on to explain how Malcolm and his family faced a lot of discrimination throughout their lives. X even drops out of school at age 15 because his teachers told him that a black man will never become a lawyer. Malcolm would then go down a slippery slope using and selling drugs. Benjamin Franklin As A Representation Of The Enlightenment Wade Cobb Dr. Boeninger DWC 201 19 October 2015 Benjamin Franklin as a Representation of the Enlightenment The Enlightenment was largely a rational response to the 16th and 17th century Scientific Revolution, as well as major developments in philosophical thinking, such as ideas proposed by Rene Descartes. During the Enlightenment, thinkers emphasize rational and critical ways of thinking, rather than the complete reliance on religion that had been previously accepted. In many ways, Benjamin Franklin was the human embodiment of the Age of Enlightenment. Similarly to the Enlightenment as a time period, Benjamin Franklin is influenced by, but strays from his upbringing in a strict Puritan context in order to establish beliefs based on reason and the scientific method. Franklin used highly thought out and methodological techniques for deciding things from a daily schedule all the way to his views on morality and virtue. He was a life long learner, and like the Age of Enlightenment itself, he put reason as the ultimate factor for knowledge and decision–making. Corresponding to the Enlightenment, Franklin was affected by his Christian background. His parents were devout Puritans, and being raised in their household, the Christian outlook left its mark on certain aspects of Franklin's beliefs. These qualities of Douglass's tone are even more evident when he employs ethos. Douglass uses ethos to establish his credibility. In fact, establishing his credibility is the very first thing Douglass does. During his lifetime, the word of a black man meant nothing without a white man's testimony. (Douglass brings that up in chapter ten.) So Douglass begins his book with a preface by William Lloyd Garrison, a white man who was very involved in anti–slavery movements. Douglass goes so far as to call it his "pathway to freedom". The moment he realizes the power of his literacy is quite amazing. Malcolm X's Use Of Rhetorical Patterns In My First Conk Rhetorical Patterns in My First Conk In the excerpt from, "The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1994)", titled, "My First Conk", Malcolm X used the rhetorical pattern of description to paint a picture of the scene in the reader's mind, he used process to thoughtfully describe each step and build suspense, and finally, he used narration to connect with the readers. Malcolm X used the device of description in his autobiography in order to paint a picture in the reader's mind so that one can better understand the context, the overall situation, and in this case, the result of his project. An example of his use of description is in paragraph 17, where Malcolm wrote, "And on top of my head was this thick, smooth sheen of shining red hair– real red– as straight as any white man's". This is an example of description because it uses expressive word choice which helps one to have a thorough understanding of how the author wants to portray the scene. In Morrison's novel, the plot follows the main protagonist Milkman as he matures within his community while developing relationships with others and discovering his individual identity. This incident is complementary to an episode in The Autobiography of Malcolm X when Mr. Ostrowski, a teacher of Malcolm X's, tells Malcolm that becoming "a lawyer...is no realistic goal for a nigger" (X 41). In both cases, each individual thereafter tries to pursue a more mainstream view of self–identity. Further observation of the two men aligns closely with identities of American ideals of wealth, prosperity, and Western culture. Initially, Milkman's journey leads him down a path that resembles cultural influences of mainstream America. This is the same direction in which his father, Macon Dead, Jr. navigates his life–seeking wealth, prosperity, and likeness to White Americans while remaining undisturbed by the problems inherent to his community. Milkman tries to imitate this characteristic of his father's until he grows older and realizes that one of his legs is shorter than the other which requires him to walk with a limp. At fourteen, "Milkman feared his father, respected him, but knew, because of his leg, that he could never emulate him" (Morrison 63). It is his bitter attitude conveyed with the usage of words with negative connotations as well as alliteration of "mother moaning" and "pompous priests" to emphasise the suffering he had experienced during his childhood which greatly contrasts with the latter part of the autobiography which uses a good– natured attitude to balance the bleakness of his life.
