Essay on The Harry Potter Controversy
The Harry Potter Controversy
The wildly popular Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling has caused controversy for many
families over the past five years. These novels according to some critics are harmless, adventurous,
children's tales. Others choose to portray them as stories that inspire children to become involved in
the occult and serious witchcraft. The Harry Potter novels chronicle the life of a young wizard
whose wizard parents were killed by the evil Lord Voldermort. On his eleventh birthday he receives
invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each of the five books represents
a year of his life there (Walker). This essay will discuss whether the Harry Potter novels are a
suitable read for children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She said that children will come into her store between books and ask her "what can I read that's as
good as Harry Potter?" (Kennedy–Ross). Elementary school principal, Dennis Edge, spoke about
how the books have positively affected the reading as his school. He said that he would not suggest
Harry Potter is "single–handedly solving our reading problems" but he did note that "once students
become successful at reading that encourages them to read more" (Kennedy–Ross). Potter novels
draw in children and adults with interesting and humorous story lines.
Even children that are too young to read can benefit from having Harry Potter stories read to them.
Reading aloud humorous and exciting stories like Harry Potter allows for a "myriad of shared
emotions" (Giorgis 82). Interesting books read aloud leave kids wanting to hear another. Janet
Seden, professor of the School of Health and Social Welfare at Open University concluded that
enjoyable fictional experiences as a child "create empathy in the reader and enable us to confront
the need for imagination as parents and practitioners" (Seden 296). Some parents are pleased by the
way that Harry Potter has interested their children in reading, but others find the novels to promote
good morals.
Harry Potter is a good role model for children. Harry is a boy wizard that despite all the hard breaks

The Use of Vampire Characters in Novels
The Gothic novel is not just an ordinary story of vampirism, it is rather a story about a very
particular kind of myth that is very old, that goes back even before the ancient Greeks. In classical
mythology there have been always stories about exotic lands inhabited by exotic creatures, there
have been always a fascination with constructing images of monsters male and female. In classical
mythology there have been always stories about the encounter between the mortal and the immortal,
between the ordinary and the exotic. There have been always an attraction to images of monsters,
designed to shock and horrify. In short various images of monstrosity are found in classical
mythology. One of the most famous , the Sirens. Barbara Creed in her article "The Monstrous–
Feminine: Stereotyping against the the Grain" writes in describing female monstrosity: "The Sirens
were deadly to the male sex. Described as enormous birds with the heads of women, the sirens were
able to sing beautiful haunting songs which they used to lure unwary sailors to shore, where
submerged reefs tore apart their ships. These fatal creatures then devoured their prey...Like the
sirens, female vampires have often been represented as beautiful, alluring creatures that seduce their
victims before sucking their lifeblood from their veins"(Creed). This analogy Barbara Creed makes
between the sirens as mythological monsters and the vampire figure of the nineteenth century
enables us understand the ongoing attraction

Symbolism and the Concious and Uncounsius Mind in The...
Symbolism has a powerful effect on both the conscious and unconscious mind. Conspicuous
symbolism engages the conscious mind making one think about the many clever connections the
author has made. Symbolism of the more subtle variety can have just as much of an effect on the
reader; even though the reader may miss an intentional connection made by the author, they are
likely to detect it subliminally. This can have a profound impact on the readers understanding and
impression of a work. In his novel The Assault, a novel about the consequences of a particular
dramatic event that occurred during World War II where the main character's house was incinerated
and all of his close family killed, Harry Mulish takes advantage of this fact by his ... Show more

Because of the emphasis placed on his youth and naiveté, Anton contrasts strongly with the
motherly wisdom of Truus. Anton strengthens Truus's assertion by commenting on the antithesis,
"But if that's the case, then ... then no one's ever at fault. Then everyone can just do as they please.(p
33)" Similarly at the end of episode 2 when Anton entertains Fake Ploeg, Ploeg is introduced as
having come in from the night from the chaos of a riot. This emphasizes his disorganized mind as he
tries to explain to Anton the innocence of his father. However, he is unable to convince Anton
because his origins seem to come from the darkness of the past, and because what he says is directly
contrary to what Truus states earlier in the novel it is impossible for Fake's argument to be
convincing to the reader. This an example of how Mulisch is able to either support or discount an
argument he presents by the symbolism associated with the character making it.
Mulisch uses references to darkness as well as small seemingly unimportant details that reach in a
conspicuous manner to impact the reader. The most important instance of this is the referenceto the
darkness within the neighboring houses, as the windows are closed in covered to avoid any
confrontation with the Krauts. During the original description of the assault nothing is revealed
about what is happening within the neighboring houses the only description of the actual houses was

Skinner 's Behavioral Approach On Analyzing Myself
Behaviorism and Attachment
For this paper I am going to focus on B. F. Skinner's Behavioral Approach on analyzing myself.
Behaviorism emerged in the early years of the twentieth century as a counterbalance to the
psychoanalytic approaches of therapy and psychology. Skinner was born in 1904, just nine years
after Freud published Studies on Hysteria. Both of these opposing theories, psychoanalysis and
behaviorism, have greatly influenced the way we think of the human mind. I lean more towards the
behaviorists approach because what I have read about Skinner has resonated with me. I will use
behaviorism to approach my own inner introspection and hopefully come away from this more
enlightened about myself. The classic nature verse nurture debate has been rocking the boat in
psychology since Socrates' time. Skinner and behaviorists tend to lean much more towards the
nurture side of this debate, believing that an individual's behavior is a direct consequence of what
that individual has experienced in the past, especially within the context of reinforcement and
punishment. Because of this emphasis on nurture, genes and genetics do not play as much of a role
as the experiences one receives after being born. The genes that one is born with gives the
individual the genetic constitution that is capable of responding to external stimuli. If one has
inherited genes that code for a more aggressive response to external stimuli, then that person may
have a greater ability to be aggressive

Analysis Of The Movie ' Star Wars Script '
Paper #4
What concept has fueled numerous wars and conflicts throughout history, and even in present day?
It is the oversimplification of the perception of good and bad which has sparked these battles, as
well as worked to handicap young people's ability to come to a true understanding of world events.
Gardner writes about this concept when he says, "most five–year–olds have developed a Star Wars
script. Life consists of a struggle between Good and Bad forces, with the Good generally
triumphant" (627). Through their entertainment children construct an internalized "script" which can
mislead them to think the concept of good and bad is much less complex than in reality. I believe
that this is still true, and that the "Star Wars script" is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Toward the end of the fable, Harry learns that Voldemort is trying to steal the Sorcerer's Stone which
can be used grant immortality. Harry determines that he must find the stone first. This leads to a
final struggle between Harry Potter and Voldemort, while he inhabits the body of one of the
professors at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Potter, representing the "good
side", ends up winning the battle, saving the professor, and stopping Voldemort from his evil plans.
The storyline used is a perfect example of the "Star Wars script" that Gardner was referring to.
Harry Potter represents the good side in this plot, while Voldemort represents the bad. Children who
grow up observing the aforementioned plot can then construct a misguided perception of what
defines "good" and "evil". Children internalize these types of "scripts" and use them to interpret
major historical or present day events. Gardner explains that "Most historical events or works of
literature, however, prove far more complex; to understand the causes of World War I or the U.S.
Civil War, or to grasp the thrust of a novel by Hawthorne or Austen, one must weigh and integrate
multiple factors and nuances" (627). By using the "Star Wars script" children fail to grasp the
complexities of the events that have, or are, taking place. It can lead to them using an erroneous way
of thinking by believing that historical wars are this grand battle of good and bad. The

It is difficult to determine who is responsible for the perpetuation of stereotypes because most
beliefs can be traced back for generations. Something that may begin as a bad experience for one

determine whether or not public opinion shapes the views of the media or whether the media shapes

Bernard Madoff Financial Scandal Controversy
Bernard Madoff Financial Scandal
I would first like to begin this paper by saying why I decide to chose this topic out of the 3 choices.
I believe that all of the choices were credible and a viable topic in their own regards, but the reason
this one hit home for me was because of the simplicity of the scandal. It's hard to believe that
someone could have made off with the amount of money Bernard did when the idea of a Ponzi
scheme was notable as early as the 19th century, and was named after Charles Ponzi in 1920 after
his scandal created enough issues to make it more aware to the public of what was happening. The
fact that this happened almost 100 years later at the level that it did and where it happened made me
extremely concerned and interested in the topic. In this paper I will cover the details happening up
to the scandal, the scandal itself, the people involved in the scandal, the legislation and regulations
implemented after the scandal, and my views on the outcome of the scandal.
Bernard Madoff was born April 29th, 1928 in Queens, New York. He grew up as a son of two
Jewish parents, one of which was a stockbroker. He graduated from Hofstra University in 1960 with
a degree in Political Science and then moved on to attend Brooklyn Law School where he dropped
out to start and pursue his own company, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.

Aristotle 's Poetics And The Order Of The Phoenix
Poetic Thinking
(An Essay Applying Aristotle's Poetics to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
Aristotle was a philosopher who revolutionized the world of theater with his essay entitled Poetics.
Poetics is focused on what Aristotle viewed to be the ultimate form of theater, Tragedy. Aristotle
thought that Theater should be a representation of real life. Shakespeare also followed this line of
thinking as described in As you Like it, "All the world 's a stage, And all the men and women
merely players; They have their exits and their entrances," In the essay, Poetics, the six basic
elements of a great tragedy are outlined; the most important parts being plot, character, and thought.
Aristotle's essay can be used to critique classical theater as well as more modern theater such as
films. The film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix can be classified as a great tragedy,
according to Aristotle, because it utilizes complex plot, invokes pity and fear on the main character's
behalf, and is connected by plot instead of by character. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
follows a climactic plotline over the span of a year. As said by Aristotle, climactic plotlines are far
superior to episodic plots. Aristotle states, "Plots of this kind are constructed by bad poets...they
stretch the plot beyond what it can bear and are often compelled, therefore, to dislocate the natural
order." Luckily, the plot of Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix follows an upward

Joe: So the recorder is now on. Just by way of introduction, can you guys give us a little about your
background with Nevada Climate and Energy Policy?
Alex: Before we jump in, can you give us a little bit more context of what the end goal of the project
is and what the big pitcher here is?
Dana: Sure, I can do that. Basically the idea is that we publish a number of people looking at
climate policy in the United States, particularly mapping out planet ploy network. One of the papers
was published in Nature Climate Change on what we call echo chambers and American Climate
Policies that Joe worked with me on. What we are planning on doing is updating that work, but also
looking at network at the State level around energy politics.
Particularly looking at clean energy networks there. The end goals will hopefully be some papers
that we submit for peer review, where all the information provided is off the record. If we wanted to

white papers that will summarize the finding that will be made publicly available to people. A

question popped into mind. Why did I need to go to the principal's office? I disregarded the thought
and packed up my things. I slowly walked to principal's office with my head down and thoughts
rushing through my mind. What had happened? Is everything all right? Yet, the questions did not
help the situations, for none of my questions were going to get answered any time soon. Once I
finally put my head up, I had arrived. I gradually reached for the door in fear of what was to come. I

mom was shouting in rapid Spanish. "What is wrong with you?" howled my mom.
"I was just kissing a boy! It is not like I am selling drugs or something!" replied my sister. "For all I

The Real Heroes in Literature
What images are associated with the words "hero"? A muscular Hercules saving the world from
Hades? A knight in shining armor bravely riding into combat? Words like bravery, strength, pride,
and self–sacrifice are commonly connected with a classic hero. But are those the only characteristics
that make someone heroic? A dictionary definition of a hero is "a man of distinguished courage or
ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities"; however, this is a very elastic definition
and there are many other types and definitions of heroes depending on circumstances. Is there one
that is correct? Do all heroes share any common characteristics? According to Orin E. Klapp, a hero

Throughout the journey, Bilbo is able to defeat a few enemies, such as when he buys time during the

that "even when he starts becoming useful for the group... he is humble; Bilbo doesn't mock on
those he defeats, as the classic hero tended to do" (44), rather the mockery is used to defeat the
enemies. A clear example is the incident with the spiders, where he angers them by calling them
offensive names in order to give the dwarves a chance to escape. Despite all these differences, Bilbo
is still accepted as a hero in today's society and does share some traits with the classic hero. One of
the reasons I believe he is accepted in today's society is because he is easy to relate to,
demonstrating pleasure in his domestic lifestyle, but at the same time, possessing a natural curiosity
and a desire to enjoy the occasional adventure outside his comfort zone. He also has the admirable
quality of loyalty and persistence. Even when "the dwarves wanted to know why he had ever been
brought at all, why he could not stick to his friends and come along with them, and why the wizard
had not chosen someone with more sense, and that 'He has been more trouble than use so far,' said
one" (Tolkien 44), Bilbo still stuck by their side and helped them to the best of his abilities. Just like
the Cinderella hero, Bilbo was probably not the dwarves' first choice

The Extent to Which Psychological Theories Have Been...
The Extent to Which Psychological Theories Have Been Successful in Explaining Attachments
There are various psychological theories to regard as which have been successful in explaining
attachments and I will be explaining the majority of them.
Sigmund Freud developed a theory of personality – an explanation of how each individual's
personality develops. This theory can be used to explain many aspects of behaviour, including
attachment.
Feud proposed that attachment grows out of the feeding relationship. In essence Freud claimed that
infants are born with an innate drive to seek pleasure. He called this the pleasure principle, and
suggested that one 'structure of the personality' (id) was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The relationship with the primary caregiver acts as a template for all later relationships
However, the classic experiments of Harry Harlow (1959) on rhesus monkeys demonstrated that this
theory was inadequate. This study concerned rhesus monkeys who were raised on their own by two
'wire mothers'. One wire mother had a feeding bottle attached and the other and the other was
wrapped in soft cloth but offered no cloth. According to the learning theory, the young monkeys
should have become attached to the 'mother' associated with food and offering drive reduction. In
fact, the monkeys spent most time with the cloth–covered mother and would cling to it especially
when they were frightened.
These studies suggest that 'cupboard love' is not likely to be an explanation for attachment, though
we must remember that this research concerned monkeys and it may not be wholly appropriate to
generalise the findings to human behaviour.
Schaffer and Emerson (1964) conducted an important study observing the development of
attachments in 60 infants who came largely from working–class homes in Glasgow. The infants
were observed over a period of a year in their homes.
The results of the study proved that infants were not most attached to the person who fed them, nor
to the person who spent most time with them. They were most attached to the person who was most
responsive and interacted

The Transformation of Harry Haller in Steppenwolf Essay
The Transformation of Harry Haller in Steppenwolf
A "dazzling" line "flashes" before Harry Haller's eyes (Hesse 194). It says, "Marvelous Taming of
the Steppenwolf" (194). By this statement, one must realize Hermann Hesse's final goal for his
character of Harry Haller. One also should note that all of this "taming" and these other wild events
are taking place in the psyche of Harry Haller, not in reality. Hesse draws on the ideas of his
generation's psychologists, such as Carl Jung, to guide Harry Haller's transformation. At the same
time, the dreamlike experiences Haller has have great significance in reality. This symbolic aspect
of the Steppenwolf puts the struggle of Haller's ego in perspective for the reader.
The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The discomfort takes on a "masochistic" form, shunning the creature comforts of the "Natural Man"
and becoming pure –one with the universe (180). This purity is the reason for Haller's Steppenwolf
identity.
Haller's wolf ties a lot into the "Shadow" concept of C. G. Jung (Jacobi 146). If the Steppenwolf is a
shadow, "it is a part of the individual, a split–off portion of his being which nevertheless remains
attached to him 'like his shadow'" (Jacobi 109). The Steppenwolf embodies that part of Haller that
shuns materialism and frivolity. Just like a Jungian shadow, the wolf in Harry blocks him from
becoming complete. Using a wolf is another method of creating the same situation of consciousness.
The struggle of this Steppenwolf aims at spiritual immortality, and this struggle is omnipresent in
Harry Haller's dreams. To cast aside the trivialities around him, and to be "soaring" among the
immortals is the aim of Haller in his suffering. It is for this reason that Haller sees Goethe and
Mozart –the Immortals– so often in his dreams. They are archetypes of genius for him, modes of
existence that he sees far above the herd of bourgeoisie lifestyles. He sees the trials of being true and
pure as the route to greatness:
Thus, like a precious, fleeting foam over the sea of suffering arise all those works of art, in which a
single individual lifts himself up for an hour so high above his personal destiny that his happiness

The Importance of Child Bond to His Mother
The primal importance of a child 's bond to his mother has always been recognized as a topic that
has fascinated people for hundreds of years. Among psychologists and sociologists, there is much
debate about exactly how important this attachment is and why.
At the turn of the century, the treatment of new–born babies was regarded as having little
significance for later life, because babies were thought to be immune to influence. Such idea was
attacked by Sigmund Freud. He believed the relationship a child has with his mother was a
prototype on which all future relationships were based.
Freud 's theory held that the child becomes attached to his mother because she is the source of food;
hence she gratifies his most basic needs. Slightly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This second phase of attachment is more widely accepted than the first, and has far greater long–
term significance (Bee, 1995). However, the main concern is what happens if the child does not
form a primary parental attachment. The most obvious case is of children who form no such
attachment at all.
Harlow (1962) having studied the attachment behavior in rhesus monkeys followed this up with a
study of the consequences of having no attachment at all. He raised monkeys in isolation for periods
of time, and found that those who had no contact with their mothers, nor any peers during the first
year of their lives were severely disturbed by the experience. When brought out of isolation, these
monkeys did not participate in the active play, which is characteristic of normal monkeys, instead
they huddled and withdrew. Once they turned into matured monkeys, they also proved to be
incapable of mating, and those that were artificially inseminated were incompetent parents.
Interestingly, monkeys who had not experienced being loved by a mother showed no love for their
children, and even abused them horrifically.
To establish whether or not a similar phenomenon occurs in human development, Goldfarb (1955)
studied children who were brought up in orphanages with little or no human contact for the first 3
years of their lives, and he compared them to children

Fate and Free Will in Harry Potter
One of the most pondered questions in human existence is whether our lives are determined by
forces which are beyond our control or by our own free will. It is widely believed that one's own
destiny is created by fate. However, some also consider the possibility that one's own choices can
determine the reality of one's existence. In Harry Potter, JK Rowling uses fate and choice as forces
which shape the events revolving around her protagonist, Harry Potter, as well as the other
characters in the story. Rowling does not side with one idea over the other, but instead, argues that
both fate and choice are significant factors that determine the events which happen during the

(85). Each of the students share the common goal of winning the House Cup for their house.
Individualism, therefore, is constrained and each student is forced to act in a particular way in which
they are expected to. Aside from the Sorting Hat, other forces of fate also take part in determining
the students' house associations. For example, Harry is sorted into Gryffindor, the same house his
parents belonged to. Similarly every member in the Weasley family had been a Gryffindor, while
every member in the Malfoy family had been a Slytherine. This reinforces the idea that the events in
each character's life are predestined. They did not have a choice over their placement in the houses,
but rather, they are assigned to a particular house based on forces beyond their control.

Literature : A Way Of A Person 's Mind Essay
Literature has a way of painting a picture in a person 's mind. An author will use a unique
combination of words and storytelling to create another world for the reader to envision. Often
times, these stories are nothing more than the creativity of the author to make something unique that
will draw a person in. These stories are usually based on very few real world occurrences, people
and places. However, if we look deeper into these stories, we can see a point of view into the world
the authors lived in. Authors have learned how to write fictional stories that engage people, while
unknown to the reader, the story is giving them an in depth glimpse into the political realm of the
author's life. No other important concept has been used in literature more than various forms of
discrimination. We can look at many stories and while it may not be shown right out, in many pieces
of literature we can see an undertone of discrimination. Two of the most common examples of
discrimination are racism and sexism. While reading different stories, I tried to look into them on a
deeper level and see the "between the lines" concepts that the author wanted us to see. I believe that
many authors want us to look deeper than the surface storytelling techniques to capture the true
essence of the story. Various forms of discrimination throughout history have been a literary staple
in many different fictional works. The definition of discriminate as defined by Webster

Elements And Skills Used For The Creation Of The Props
This report will focus on the processes, materials and skills used for the creation of the props seen
and used in Warner Bros most successful movie series, the Harry Potter octalogy (See Appendix 1).
The Harry Potter series was originally seven children's book written by British author, J.K Rowling.
Rowling's books tell the tale of orphaned boy wizard, Harry Potter, who is invited to an exclusive
wizarding school, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Here, he learns and works on his
magical abilities, with many challenges interrupting his school year, the main issue being Lord
Voldemort, the dark wizard who murdered his parents and plots on killing him as well.
The books have set numerous world records, having sold between 400 and 450 million copies
worldwide, and have been translated into 73 languages. The story was transformed from page to
screen by Warner Bros. Studio after J.K Rowling sold the rights to the first four Harry Potter books

The Duality Of Harry Haller
Steppenwolf is a great story that covers the duality of a man named Harry Haller who calls himself
the Steppenwolf because he believes that he is a wolf of the Steppes. The duality of Harry Haller
can relate to many people nowadays. Almost everyone has a personality that they allow people to
see but there is a whole different side to them that people don't see or rarely see. Harry Haller's
duality is between his fun, free spirited, pleasure seeking life and his intellectual, caring, and
struggles for the ideals of humanity life. This can also be explained as his Steppenwolf side and his
human side. These two sides to Harry Haller are at odds his whole life and has isolated himself
because of this duality and has become lonely because he doesn't feel any connection to the world.
The first world that Harry Haller experiences is the world of "JOLLY HUNTING. GREAT HUNT
IN AUTOMOBILES." This can also be recognized as the world of war that was raging between
humans and machines. During this war, Harry Haller and his fellow ... Show more content on

In this world, Harry Haller sees himself as the tamer and he is commanding the wolf to do tricks,
play dead, jump over his prey and eat chocolate instead, and things of that sort. This bothers Harry
Haller because the tamer is abusing the wolf's nature. Harry Haller also sees the wolf take command
of the human. The wolf commands the human to drop to his knees, walk on all fours, tear off his
clothes, and do things that are not of the human nature. This world disturbs Harry Haller even more
than the world with war because this one was completely about himself. This was Harry Haller's
first time seeing his divided nature from an external view. This helps Harry Haller change and
realize that he needs to find a way to have equilibrium between his human nature and wolf nature
before it tears him

Modern Society as a Reflection of the Picture of Dorian...
Traditional gothic fiction was at the height of its popularity during the Victorian era, it exploded in
the 1790's and continued its reign well into the 1800's. This confrontational style of fiction often
blurs the lines of realistic and artificial, forcing readers to challenge their beliefs and surpass the
norm. However, the aspect of gothic fiction that was most attractive to the Victorian audience was
the way human fears and societal tensions were reflected in the deliberately fictionalised literary
works. Themes such as the human greed for immortality and eternal beauty that underlie key gothic
texts such as Oscar Wilde's only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray have incited modern adaptations
and the appropriation of these texts into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dorian's callous reaction to Sybil's (his lover) suicide is corresponding to Voldemort's detached
feelings for his Death Eaters. With power such the immortality these two characters experience
comes greed and self–glorification. Gray's statement that he has "seen too much in life to... shock
easily" is a demonstration of this narcissistic outlook. Rowling has further authenticated Wilde's
Victorian text in her modern one by methodically paralleling many of the facets of the original
character. The shared disfiguration of the characters physic because of their unnatural desire for
immortality links both the past a present desires. Whilst Gary was "loathsome of visage," Voldemort
was similarly "the most terrible face." Not only has Rowling used their physical devastation but she
has also linked them through their shared use of an alter–ego style name. Gray's influence over
Sybil lead to the guise of "Prince Charming" whilst to a more extreme (and modernised) complete
change of name is the persona of "Lord Voldemort", both 'immortals' gave themselves
unprecedented royal titles. Rowling's clever dramatisation of the original Dorian Gray character has
allowed for revolutionary use of "the land of fantasies"(5) in which Voldemort's lust for immortality

Wizards and Vampires: Exploring the Phenomenal Popularity...
"There was a time when no one had heard of Harry Potter," a title of an article published in the 2007
edition of the Chicago tribune. It attempted to describe the Harry Potter phenomenon. However, if
written now it would be "There was a time when no one had heard of Harry Potter and Edward
Cullen" the Twilight series has sparked a phenomenon equal to the Harry Potter series. To know
exactly why these fictional books have become a vast phenomenon is impossible but gaining
thoughts and slight understanding of why helps. And to understand this roaring debate between the
fan bases of each book.
In order to understand the phenomena of these books, a basic understanding of the plots is

Quidditch, the Tri–wizards cup.
With regard to Twilight, a relatively new series by Stephanie Myer, is a four book, vampire love
story. Bella Swan transfers schools to live with her dad in Forks, WA, a dreary, rainy place. This is
also, where the Cullen's live, a family of vampires, who only feed only on animals and are the
"good" vampires. When Bella meets Edward Cullen, in her biology class, there is deep tension
between the two of them and it doesn't seem to be in a good way, Edward seems utterly repulsed by
Bella. As the story continues, it's discovered that he only seemed repulsed when in reality he cannot
get enough of her. After Edward saves Bella's life, it is her goal to understand why and how.
Unknowingly the two fall madly in love with each other and will do anything to keep the other
"alive". The story of Bella and Edward is a modern day Romeo and Juliet story, except with the
vampire twist.
Both books have an underlying theme of love in them. In Twilight, it is obvious there is a romance
theme. A true love so deep the characters would die for each other. However, in Harry Potter, it's a
little deeper but the love theme is there. Love featured in the Harry Potter books are much more than
romance; it is a love for family, friends and everyone in the world. It is love that drives Harry's
mother to die for him, Snape to switch sides, and Harry to try to sacrifice himself in the hopes of
weakening Voldemort. The idea

Steppenwolf : The Disintegration of Harry Haller as it Relates to Music
Among the many themes present in Hermann Hesse's 1927 novel Steppenwolf, two stand out as
basic threads around which the story is constructed: the isolated nature of the artist and the duality
of
existence (Benét 471). Harry Haller, the protagonist of the novel, is portrayed as an outsider to
society and
to modern life; he must struggle with his own outmoded ideals and bestiality to embrace humanity
and
reality. His Zerrissenheit, or disintegration (literally translated, "the state of being torn apart" [Benét
1142]), culminates in the Magic Theater at the finish of the novel. Here, he finds himself a changed
man,
with a clearer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He appears to experience the most meaningful of emotions and a sense of spiritual fulfillment. For a
man
who is consistently depressed and withdrawn, this sudden enlightenment is especially significant.
Indeed,
as Haller relates the experience himself,
I sped through heaven and saw God at work. I suffered holy pains. I dropped all my defenses and
was
afraid of nothing in the world. I accepted all things and to all things I gave up my heart. It did not
last
very long, a quarter of an hour perhaps; but it returned to me in a dream at night, and since through
all
the barren days, I caught a glimpse of it now and then. (30)
Haller's experience gives him access to spirituality and peace. He relies on this feeling of freedom to
aid
him in times of darkest depression, when he feels the man and the beast within him scrapping
together to
such a degree that his only other possible release is his razor. Increasingly, Haller finds his only
solace in
classical music and poetry–anything of the contemporary sort he automatically discards. His very
survival
depends upon Mozart, Goethe and Novalis: such is Haller's mindset at the beginning of his
Zerrissenheit.
Even as he retreats so fully into Mozart, Goethe, Novalis and the old masters, Haller displays
some tendency towards change. Without this slight crack in his stern

Essay about My Brilliant Racing Career
As I enter my last semester of high school, I have to starting thinking about making a plan for the
future. The problem for me was actually making a decision that would be right for me, I could not
decide what I wanted to do until a few weeks ago. But I finally made my decision about what I think
I will enjoy doing, and making a career out of it. There are many paths I can and could take, but the
automotive area is the one that sticks out to me. The two technician schools I have chosen are UTI,
Universal Technician Institute, and WyoTech University, both of which are tech schools and will
help get started. But that is the path I have chosen to go for, and I am going to stick with it.

That is why I have chosen to go into the automotive world.
In order to be like my grandpa, I have to start learning more about how he got to where he is. The
first step for me to take is going to an automotive technician school. I found a few places such as
UTI (Universal Technician Institute), and Wyotech University which are both great places to get
started. My plan so far is to take UTI's 51 week starting program in order to get me going. After that
I will be going to their main school in Charlotte, North Carolina. Once I'm there I will take a racing
technician class which is around 15 weeks long, and that puts me right into the seat of racing. After
researching some more I found out that if I am in the top 5 students of the racing program, I get the
opportunity to be picked up and hired by an actual racing company such as Porsche, Ford,
Mercedes, Chevrolet and maybe even McLaren, and get to work for them which would be an honor.
But even to get that opportunity I have to start somewhere, and I feel like UTI is a good place for
me to start. At UTI the learning environment looks like a collage campus from the outside, but on
the inside it is one big garage full of all types of cars. The teachers are all certified automotive
technicians and master mechanics; they will teach me everything I will need to know. Most of the
students are like I am; we all share a burning passion and love for cars, and we all strive to gain
more knowledge about them.

Harry Potter Vs. Christians Essay
Who has never dreamed of witches, broomsticks and full moon light? I always wished, when I was
younger, I could turn and do magic like a witch. I even bought little magic kits, but it was nothing
like the magic I wanted to produce. In my teen years, a book called Harry Potter caught my
attention. It took me to a world I thought could only belong in my head. J.K. Rowling brought
words of description to my dreams and brought out the little witch and wizard in many children's
lives. I have not been able to find a more descriptive, memorable, imaginative, and well–written

The Harry Potter books make witchcraft and the practice of magic seem appealing and fun;
therefore, parents shouldn't allow their children to read them.
This particular issue is the source of most Christianity complaints and protests against the Harry
Potter books. Christians who express nothing but disdain for the separation of church and state when
it comes to the government promoting Christianity, suddenly become defenders of the principle.
They are arguing that schools are inappropriately promoting religion when students are encouraged
to read Harry Potter.
Even if they are hypocritical, it would matter if they are right because schools shouldn't encourage
students to read books that promote a particular religion. Most people tend to regard censorship as a
bad thing, but if the Harry Potter books really do promote witchcraft then perhaps there haven't been
enough challenges. If the Harry Potter books don't promote witchcraft, but merely include
witchcraft as part of the fabric of a fantasy world, then complaints are less about the books
themselves. Then the problem must be something else, possibly the

Albrecht Von Haller's 'Die AlpenThe Alps In English'
In his 1729 poem Die Alpen–The Alps in English–Swiss Albrecht von Haller paints an idealized
portrait of mountain life based on his journeys thorough the Swiss Alps while working as a botanist.
Haller describes the beauty of the landscapes with flowery, sensual language: "the plum of honied
flavor" (Haller, 57), "circling peaks create a rim of gleaming blue" (Haller, 65), and "The ambient
air is full of scents and ambergris"(Haller, 69). Haller likens to the mountain communities as a sort
of utopian society with his glorifying descriptions and admiring, awestruck tone.Even when
describing the dark days of winter and rough, rock strewn dirt, he responds that the hardworking,
mountainous people take their challenges in stride and build themselves into stronger people, which
leads to what Haller really says with his poem. Hidden between descriptions of nature Haller
comments on the tight knit communities living in unity with each other away from vice and greed.
Haller builds an image of a wholesome and tight knit mountain community based around shared
wisdom, respect for one another, and traditions. He comments on the two main communal
relationships–that of the village as a whole and the household community structure. Due to the
repetitive nature of life in the mountains–every year consistently cycles between Spring coming
with lush fields for the cattle, planting seeds over the Summer, the Fall harvest, and finally Winter a
time to rest and spend time with family–the elders

Skinner 's Behavioral Approach On Analyzing Myself
If one has
inherited genes that code for a more aggressive response to external stimuli, then that person may
have a greater ability to be aggressive than one that lacks those

Harry Potter 's The Casual Vacancy
After the success of her popular Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling has recently branched out from
writing children's literature. Her first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy, explores more mature topics
and is aimed at a new demographic than her previous works. She challenges social issues with her
dark themes and her impeccable writing style captures the wide range of problems at the heart of a
small town. It becomes more apparent throughout the novel that each character is connected in a
web of misfortunes. Each individual has their own flaws and it becomes more apparent that there
are additional underlying issues at the center of the "pretty little town" (Tait). J.K. Rowling's The
Casual Vacancy, Krystal Weedon is the troubled hero of the novel as she struggles to overcome
difficulties in her life after the death of her mentor, Barry Fairbrother. The author behind this
controversial narrative has become one of the world's most decorated authors due to the widespread
success of her novels. Although she is well–known today, Rowling had very humble beginnings.
Born on July 31, 1965 to Peter and Anne Rowling, Joanne became the newest addition to her family
beside her older sister, Diana. During her childhood, Rowling lived in several different places
throughout Great Britain. Her family moved from Chipping Sodbury to Winterbourne, and then
again to Tutshill ("J.K. Rowling"). Rowling took an interest to writing at a young age and began

Steppenwolf : The Idea Of The Absurd Within Harry Haller
Steppenwolf also incorporates the idea of the Absurd within Harry Haller. As established earlier, the
wolf–side of him represents absurd existence. While he does struggle with the Absurd, it does not
necessarily mean that he does not understand or recognize the Absurd. This monologue in the novel
establishes such: ....and it is all compulsory, mechanical and against the grain....and indeed it is this
never–ceasing machinery that prevents their being. like me, the critics of their own lives and
recognising the stupidity and shallowness, the hopeless tragedy and waste of the lives they lead, and
the awful ambiguity grinning over it all. And they are right, right a thousand times to live as they do,
playing their games and pursuing their business, instead of resisting the dreary machine and staring
into the void as I do who have left the track...though now and then in these pages I scorn and even
deride them, or that I accuse them of the responsibility of my personal misery. but now that I have
come so far, and standing as I do on the extreme verge of life where the ground falls away before
me into bottomless darkness... (87) Here, Harry explicitly acknowledges that the aspect of the
Absurd, the "ambiguity" and "void" that is contained within it, perpetuate his suffering and
alienation. The metaphors on the bourgeois and the imagery used in this passage accentuate the
vividness of his experience and that he is not unaware what the wolf means, but that he simply

Different Paths a Person Can Take in Harry Potter by J.K....
There are always different paths that a person can take, some too many to count and other just two

is used in many works of art to express a meaning or a point. One of the best examples would the
the Harry Potter novel series by J. K. Rowling. The Hero, Harry potter himself, and the Shadow or
villain, Voldemort or Tom Riddle. They are similar by their blood statue, and treatment at the hands

Not Just a Pretty Face
METHOD
Despite how the word may sound, deconstruction means to deconstruct, not to destroy.
Deconstruction is always simultaneously affirming and undoing. Deconstruction refers to a
technique for reading and analyzing texts developed by Jacques Derrida, Paul de Man, and others;
this, in turn, is connected to a set of philosophical theories about language and meaning. As a result
of the popularity of this technique and theory, the word "deconstruct" is often used as a synonym for
criticizing or demonstrating the incongruity of a position. It is a way to interpret literary, religious,
and legal texts as well as philosophical ones, and was adopted by French feminist theorists as a way
to make clearer the deep male bias that was embedded in European literature and traditions.
In order to deconstruct a text, one must take it apart along the structural "fault lines" (IEP) created
by ambiguities that are fundamental in one or more of its key themes in order to reveal the
contradictions that make the text possible. For example, Derrida, in "Plato's Pharmacy,"
deconstructs Socrates' criticism of written word. He contends that it suffers not only from
inconsistencies internally because of Socrates analogy between memory and writing, but also
because his ideas come to us only through his written word. Many deconstructive arguments center
on the analysis of its oppositions. The person

John Rowe Townsend once argued that the only practical definition of a children's book is one that
appears on the children's list by a publisher. Contemporary publishers are not making that
distinction any easier; for example, Maurice Sendak's Outside Over There (1981) was published as a
picture book for both children and adults, and J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series is available in
adult and children's versions with the only difference being the book's cover art. While folk and
Fairy Tales were not originally intended for children, they have become a staple of children's
literature since the early nineteenth century. On the other hand, many books written for and widely
read by children during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are considered historical children's
literature today and are read almost exclusively by adult scholars of children's literature. Children's
literature has been written, illustrated, published, marketed, and purchased consistently by adults to
be given to children for their edification and entertainment. Generally speaking, it is the intended
audience rather than the producers of the texts who define the field. Children's texts written by child
or adolescent authors, such as Daisy Ashford's The Young Visiters(1919) or Anne Frank's Het
Achterhuis (1947; The Diary of a Young Girl, 1952), are exceptions to the rule. Many famous
children's authors, such as Louisa May

The Maze Runner Series Of Books
I've been an avid reader since an early age. From grades three to about eight, I read almost every
night and I read so much that I got in trouble quite a lot for reading. I haven't read a whole lot in the
past few years because there haven't really been any series that interested me. The Maze Runner
series was really good and I read that last year. The last good series before that was the Gone series.
In addition to books, I spent, and still do spend, a lot of time on the internet reading about topics that
interest me. I'm constantly looking for new books to read. I also really liked the Harry Potter series
of books, I read them all in the eighth grade.
I remember when I was young I read a lot of books. I kind of 'hit my peak' with reading at age ten
through eleven. I read every night, sometimes I would read up until midnight. I read so much that I
actually got in trouble at school multiple times for reading while class was going on. I remember a
moment when the teacher was so frustrated with me for reading while he was talking, he berated me
in front of the class. That wasn't a good experience, and I remember being really embarrassed. I had
a lot of bullying problems at the time and a few of them were in that class, so that gave them more
ammo. But that was just one time, and normally I was just told to put the book away.
In the seventh grade, I found the 'Gone' series of books. It was about a event in a small town in
California that sealed a opaque 'dome' around a

Harry Harlow (1905–1981) was an American Psychologist who studied monkeys and their behavior.
His research paved the way to a better understanding of human behavior. Dr. Harlow's research also
helped to better understand the psychology of children. This essay will discuss Dr. Harlow's
background, education, social influence, historical significance, and major contributions in the study
of psychology. Background
Early Childhood Harry Harlow's original last name was Israel, and he was born on Halloween in
1905. He grew up in Fairfield, Iowa. His parent's names were Mabel Rock and Alonzo Israel. He

Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act
H.R. 3590 (111th): Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
When president Obama was a candidate in the 2008 election he promised wide scale health care
reform that would increase the availability and affordability of medical insurance for a large portion
of the American population. At the time of his campaign, millions of low–income Americans were
stuck in the Medicaid gap – where they could not afford health insurance, but also were not eligible
for the joint state and federal government Medicaid program. This promise eventually became the
bill later named the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that was passed by the senate on
December 24, 2010. The bill's policy seeks to expand health care coverage to low–income families

Of those people many were considered below the poverty threshold, however due to strict state
regulations these individuals or families did not qualify for insurance through Medicaid. As a result,
when these Americans needed to be seen by doctors, insured tax paying American's would be stuck
with their bills. In order to alleviate this problem, president Obama decided to lead a major
campaign to increase the affordability of health care. Through draft bills in the house and senate, the
Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obama Care, covers a large portion of Americans
who before it became a law would be left without insurance. The bill has two main parts – making
healthcare affordable to low income families and increasing the scope of Medicaid eligibility.
Before ObamaCare, families and individuals who were not covered by employers for healthcare had
to seek out insurance on their own. This task proved very difficult as insurance providers charged
steep prices for coverage. In short, health care coverage was not affordable to a large portion of the
population. The law seeks to cover Americans who are between 138% and 400% of the Federal
Poverty Level. They can sign up for Health Care via a government run website, which will allow
them to choose a plan that best suits their needs. A formula will then decide based on their state how

Amusing Ourselves to Death: It's Time to Stop Laughing
The form of communication created by the television is not only a part of how our modern society
communicates, but is has changed public discourse to the point that it has completely redefined it,
argued Neil Postman in his convincing book Amusing Ourselves to Death. He viewed this as very
harmful, and additionally so because our society is ignorant of it as they quickly becomes engulfed
in its epistemology. When faced with the question about whether the television shapes or reflects
culture, Postman pointed out that it is no longer applicable because "television has gradually

We are now in the "information age" where we demand to be informed, yet are told in such a way
that we think we know so much, but in fact we are becoming increasingly ignorant.
Postman made it clear that his book is not an attack on the television itself. Instead he asserted that,
supplied by the television's form, it is the change in the definition of how we learn, and thus
perceive, the world around us that is under his criticism. When it comes to entertainment, Postman
admitted that the television does an excellent job. "Television [...] serves us most usefully when
presenting junk–entertainment; it serves us most ill when it co–opts serious modes of discourse–
news, politics, science, education, commerce, religion–and turns them into entertainment packages"
(159). The television does not require viewers to carry thoughts from minute to minute, and their
eyes are never unstimulated, as the average duration of a camera view is a mere 3.5 seconds (86).
Such brevity of thought and picture are a drastic difference from the way we used to get our
information. That is, through the monopoly of the print media. Then contiguous information,
uninterrupted by advertisements and thoughts not spliced into sentence–long segments, was
expressed from cover to cover. Now, the kind of information (or misinformation) we are accustomed
to receiving via the television set is redefining the way we receive and perceive information. It is not

The Death Of The Frontier And Progressive Era Essay
Ragtime is full with a myriad number of characters, from Harry Houdini to Booker T Washington,
but the pivotal characters in my eyes were Mother and Father. There's something to be said when the
main characters of a novel don't even have names, unlike the many other minor characters, who
were major players in history. What makes them stand out even more is the fact that Mother and
Father weren't the only fictional characters, however, they as long as all of the members of their
family, including Little Girl who would join Mother's family at the end of the tale, were the only
ones who were not named. That's because it's an obvious way for Doctorow to use them as a symbol
for the typical middle–class American family during the Progressive Era. However, this is not the
only role they had. In addition, the death of the Frontier and the birth of the Progressive Era is
shown in Ragtime through the developing relationship between Father and Mother who represent
the Frontier and Progressive Era respectively. The relationship they share is a unique one and vital
to the image Doctorow is trying to depict, the change occurring in time. There's a reason Father and
Mother, a married couple, were used in this way rather than another relationship, and that is because
an era does not erratically die, but rather the merging of new and old ideas forms a marriage
between the two eras before one is completed. Just like two time periods, Father and Mother change
positions. While Father grows

Harry Haller
In "Steppenwolf," Hermann Hess's main character Harry Haller is a man divided by two natures that
are in constant conflict. On one hand he is a wolf who is a rebel against society's norms. The wolf is
a vicious loner who thinks that the evils of the world will prevail over the good. On the other hand
there is a humanistic side of Harry. The humanistic side allows Harry to fanaticize a dream world
and go along with the norms of society. He is positive about the world and is good. The humanistic
side resembles a longing to be within the bourgeois, which is defined as the middle class. As these
two natures are constantly battling and in conflict with one another, one must win and one must
lose. Even though Harry Haller has moments of happiness and fantasy, on the whole I believe he is a
pessimist because he often acts rebellious, unpredictable, and suicide. This correlates with
Schopenhauer's man vs brute. The man would have the same characters as Harry's humanistic side
while the brute shares common features from the brute. Harry Haller's dual nature is in an
everlasting competition with each other. The narrator states, "In him the man and the wolf did not go
the same way together, but were in continual and deadly enmity" (42). This quote states that his dual
nature is always in a continual battle and that they never see through the same eyes. The wolf and
the man are direct opposites of one another. Never do they side on one thing together. The wolf
connects to enmity because the wolf is animalistic and dangerous. The wolf is considered a
pessimist because it believes evil will prevail over the good. That is why it is deadly. I think that the
author uses the word enmity to show the audience how strongly one side dislikes the other. I think
that these two sides don't just have different views but also don't like each other's views and one is
always trying to overpower the other. The wolf corresponds with the brute from Schopenhauer's "On
the Suffering of the World" by thinking that the human's hopes and dreams will only cause more
disappointment and pain. "Unless suffering is the direct and immediate object of life, our existence
must entirely fall of its aim" (Schopenhauer 455). I believe this means

Why I Didn 't Know It?
Before I knew it, it was already two days before we got to go to Hogwarts. I couldn't believe it. I
was two days away from going to a magical school that, up until about a week ago, didn't exist. I
wondered what house I was going to get sorted into. I wasn't brave enough for Gryffindor, too
pessimistic for Hufflepuff, too dumb for Ravenclaw, and not cunning enough for Slytherin. Maybe I
wouldn't get sorted into a house, and I would just have to sleep in Dumbledore's office. That would
be cool, maybe I would get to braid his beard.
"Whatcha thinking about?" George asked from beside me. We were on our way to the Leaky
Cauldron, where apparently Harry was staying after he blew up his aunt. We all had a good laugh
about that.
"Braiding Dumbledore's beard," I replied casually. He gave me a weirded out look, as did basically
everyone else in the car that heard me. I shrugged. They asked a question, and they got an answer.
"You excited for Hogwarts? Do you reckon it'll be different from your school back in America?"
Fred asked us.
"I'm so excited! I'll have to study really hard to keep up in my classes though. Of course it'll be
different. I heard that you all have houses or something, what's up with those?" Janelle rambled. We
had decided to say that our muggle school back in America was the wizarding school we went to.
We just had to change the subjects and it was the perfect lie. I had also educated them all about the
wizarding world as it would look a bit weird if

The Harry Potter Controversy Essay

  • 1. Essay on The Harry Potter Controversy The Harry Potter Controversy The wildly popular Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling has caused controversy for many families over the past five years. These novels according to some critics are harmless, adventurous, children's tales. Others choose to portray them as stories that inspire children to become involved in the occult and serious witchcraft. The Harry Potter novels chronicle the life of a young wizard whose wizard parents were killed by the evil Lord Voldermort. On his eleventh birthday he receives invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each of the five books represents a year of his life there (Walker). This essay will discuss whether the Harry Potter novels are a suitable read for children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She said that children will come into her store between books and ask her "what can I read that's as good as Harry Potter?" (Kennedy–Ross). Elementary school principal, Dennis Edge, spoke about how the books have positively affected the reading as his school. He said that he would not suggest Harry Potter is "single–handedly solving our reading problems" but he did note that "once students become successful at reading that encourages them to read more" (Kennedy–Ross). Potter novels draw in children and adults with interesting and humorous story lines. Even children that are too young to read can benefit from having Harry Potter stories read to them. Reading aloud humorous and exciting stories like Harry Potter allows for a "myriad of shared emotions" (Giorgis 82). Interesting books read aloud leave kids wanting to hear another. Janet Seden, professor of the School of Health and Social Welfare at Open University concluded that enjoyable fictional experiences as a child "create empathy in the reader and enable us to confront the need for imagination as parents and practitioners" (Seden 296). Some parents are pleased by the way that Harry Potter has interested their children in reading, but others find the novels to promote good morals. Harry Potter is a good role model for children. • 2. The Use of Vampire Characters in Novels The Gothic novel is not just an ordinary story of vampirism, it is rather a story about a very particular kind of myth that is very old, that goes back even before the ancient Greeks. In classical mythology there have been always stories about exotic lands inhabited by exotic creatures, there have been always a fascination with constructing images of monsters male and female. In classical mythology there have been always stories about the encounter between the mortal and the immortal, between the ordinary and the exotic. There have been always an attraction to images of monsters, designed to shock and horrify. In short various images of monstrosity are found in classical mythology. One of the most famous , the Sirens. Barbara Creed in her article "The Monstrous– Feminine: Stereotyping against the the Grain" writes in describing female monstrosity: "The Sirens were deadly to the male sex. Described as enormous birds with the heads of women, the sirens were able to sing beautiful haunting songs which they used to lure unwary sailors to shore, where submerged reefs tore apart their ships. These fatal creatures then devoured their prey...Like the sirens, female vampires have often been represented as beautiful, alluring creatures that seduce their victims before sucking their lifeblood from their veins"(Creed). This analogy Barbara Creed makes between the sirens as mythological monsters and the vampire figure of the nineteenth century enables us understand the ongoing attraction ... • 3. Symbolism and the Concious and Uncounsius Mind in The... Symbolism has a powerful effect on both the conscious and unconscious mind. Conspicuous symbolism engages the conscious mind making one think about the many clever connections the author has made. Symbolism of the more subtle variety can have just as much of an effect on the reader; even though the reader may miss an intentional connection made by the author, they are likely to detect it subliminally. This can have a profound impact on the readers understanding and impression of a work. In his novel The Assault, a novel about the consequences of a particular dramatic event that occurred during World War II where the main character's house was incinerated and all of his close family killed, Harry Mulish takes advantage of this fact by his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of the emphasis placed on his youth and naiveté, Anton contrasts strongly with the motherly wisdom of Truus. Anton strengthens Truus's assertion by commenting on the antithesis, "But if that's the case, then ... then no one's ever at fault. Then everyone can just do as they please.(p 33)" Similarly at the end of episode 2 when Anton entertains Fake Ploeg, Ploeg is introduced as having come in from the night from the chaos of a riot. This emphasizes his disorganized mind as he tries to explain to Anton the innocence of his father. However, he is unable to convince Anton because his origins seem to come from the darkness of the past, and because what he says is directly contrary to what Truus states earlier in the novel it is impossible for Fake's argument to be convincing to the reader. This an example of how Mulisch is able to either support or discount an argument he presents by the symbolism associated with the character making it. Mulisch uses references to darkness as well as small seemingly unimportant details that reach in a conspicuous manner to impact the reader. The most important instance of this is the referenceto the darkness within the neighboring houses, as the windows are closed in covered to avoid any confrontation with the Krauts. During the original description of the assault nothing is revealed about what is happening within the neighboring houses the only description of the actual houses was that ... • 4. Skinner 's Behavioral Approach On Analyzing Myself Behaviorism and Attachment For this paper I am going to focus on B. F. Skinner's Behavioral Approach on analyzing myself. Behaviorism emerged in the early years of the twentieth century as a counterbalance to the psychoanalytic approaches of therapy and psychology. Skinner was born in 1904, just nine years after Freud published Studies on Hysteria. Both of these opposing theories, psychoanalysis and behaviorism, have greatly influenced the way we think of the human mind. I lean more towards the behaviorists approach because what I have read about Skinner has resonated with me. I will use behaviorism to approach my own inner introspection and hopefully come away from this more enlightened about myself. The classic nature verse nurture debate has been rocking the boat in psychology since Socrates' time. Skinner and behaviorists tend to lean much more towards the nurture side of this debate, believing that an individual's behavior is a direct consequence of what that individual has experienced in the past, especially within the context of reinforcement and punishment. Because of this emphasis on nurture, genes and genetics do not play as much of a role as the experiences one receives after being born. The genes that one is born with gives the individual the genetic constitution that is capable of responding to external stimuli. If one has inherited genes that code for a more aggressive response to external stimuli, then that person may have a greater ability to be aggressive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of The Movie ' Star Wars Script ' Paper #4 What concept has fueled numerous wars and conflicts throughout history, and even in present day? It is the oversimplification of the perception of good and bad which has sparked these battles, as well as worked to handicap young people's ability to come to a true understanding of world events. Gardner writes about this concept when he says, "most five–year–olds have developed a Star Wars script. Life consists of a struggle between Good and Bad forces, with the Good generally triumphant" (627). Harry Potter, representing the "good side", ends up winning the battle, saving the professor, and stopping Voldemort from his evil plans. The storyline used is a perfect example of the "Star Wars script" that Gardner was referring to. Harry Potter represents the good side in this plot, while Voldemort represents the bad. Children who grow up observing the aforementioned plot can then construct a misguided perception of what defines "good" and "evil". Children internalize these types of "scripts" and use them to interpret major historical or present day events. Gardner explains that "Most historical events or works of literature, however, prove far more complex; to understand the causes of World War I or the U.S. Civil War, or to grasp the thrust of a novel by Hawthorne or Austen, one must weigh and integrate multiple factors and nuances" (627). By using the "Star Wars script" children fail to grasp the complexities of the events that have, or are, taking place. I believe that all of the choices were credible and a viable topic in their own regards, but the reason this one hit home for me was because of the simplicity of the scandal. It's hard to believe that someone could have made off with the amount of money Bernard did when the idea of a Ponzi scheme was notable as early as the 19th century, and was named after Charles Ponzi in 1920 after his scandal created enough issues to make it more aware to the public of what was happening. The fact that this happened almost 100 years later at the level that it did and where it happened made me extremely concerned and interested in the topic. In this paper I will cover the details happening up to the scandal, the scandal itself, the people involved in the scandal, the legislation and regulations implemented after the scandal, and my views on the outcome of the scandal. • 8. Aristotle 's Poetics And The Order Of The Phoenix Poetic Thinking (An Essay Applying Aristotle's Poetics to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) Aristotle was a philosopher who revolutionized the world of theater with his essay entitled Poetics. Poetics is focused on what Aristotle viewed to be the ultimate form of theater, Tragedy. Aristotle thought that Theater should be a representation of real life. Shakespeare also followed this line of thinking as described in As you Like it, "All the world 's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances," In the essay, Poetics, the six basic elements of a great tragedy are outlined; the most important parts being plot, character, and thought. Aristotle's essay can be used to critique classical theater as well as more modern theater such as films. The film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix can be classified as a great tragedy, according to Aristotle, because it utilizes complex plot, invokes pity and fear on the main character's behalf, and is connected by plot instead of by character. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix follows a climactic plotline over the span of a year. As said by Aristotle, climactic plotlines are far superior to episodic plots. Aristotle states, "Plots of this kind are constructed by bad poets...they stretch the plot beyond what it can bear and are often compelled, therefore, to dislocate the natural order." Luckily, the plot of Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix follows an upward ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A clear example is the incident with the spiders, where he angers them by calling them offensive names in order to give the dwarves a chance to escape. Despite all these differences, Bilbo is still accepted as a hero in today's society and does share some traits with the classic hero. One of the reasons I believe he is accepted in today's society is because he is easy to relate to, demonstrating pleasure in his domestic lifestyle, but at the same time, possessing a natural curiosity and a desire to enjoy the occasional adventure outside his comfort zone. He also has the admirable quality of loyalty and persistence. Even when "the dwarves wanted to know why he had ever been brought at all, why he could not stick to his friends and come along with them, and why the wizard had not chosen someone with more sense, and that 'He has been more trouble than use so far,' said one" (Tolkien 44), Bilbo still stuck by their side and helped them to the best of his abilities. The Extent to Which Psychological Theories Have Been Successful in Explaining Attachments There are various psychological theories to regard as which have been successful in explaining attachments and I will be explaining the majority of them. Sigmund Freud developed a theory of personality – an explanation of how each individual's personality develops. This theory can be used to explain many aspects of behaviour, including attachment. Feud proposed that attachment grows out of the feeding relationship. In essence Freud claimed that infants are born with an innate drive to seek pleasure. The relationship with the primary caregiver acts as a template for all later relationships However, the classic experiments of Harry Harlow (1959) on rhesus monkeys demonstrated that this theory was inadequate. This study concerned rhesus monkeys who were raised on their own by two 'wire mothers'. One wire mother had a feeding bottle attached and the other and the other was wrapped in soft cloth but offered no cloth. According to the learning theory, the young monkeys should have become attached to the 'mother' associated with food and offering drive reduction. In fact, the monkeys spent most time with the cloth–covered mother and would cling to it especially when they were frightened. These studies suggest that 'cupboard love' is not likely to be an explanation for attachment, though we must remember that this research concerned monkeys and it may not be wholly appropriate to generalise the findings to human behaviour. Schaffer and Emerson (1964) conducted an important study observing the development of attachments in 60 infants who came largely from working–class homes in Glasgow. The infants were observed over a period of a year in their homes. The results of the study proved that infants were not most attached to the person who fed them, nor to the person who spent most time with them. It says, "Marvelous Taming of the Steppenwolf" (194). By this statement, one must realize Hermann Hesse's final goal for his character of Harry Haller. One also should note that all of this "taming" and these other wild events are taking place in the psyche of Harry Haller, not in reality. Hesse draws on the ideas of his generation's psychologists, such as Carl Jung, to guide Harry Haller's transformation. At the same time, the dreamlike experiences Haller has have great significance in reality. This symbolic aspect of the Steppenwolf puts the struggle of Haller's ego in perspective for the reader. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The discomfort takes on a "masochistic" form, shunning the creature comforts of the "Natural Man" and becoming pure –one with the universe (180). This purity is the reason for Haller's Steppenwolf identity. Haller's wolf ties a lot into the "Shadow" concept of C. G. Jung (Jacobi 146). If the Steppenwolf is a shadow, "it is a part of the individual, a split–off portion of his being which nevertheless remains attached to him 'like his shadow'" (Jacobi 109). The Steppenwolf embodies that part of Haller that shuns materialism and frivolity. Just like a Jungian shadow, the wolf in Harry blocks him from becoming complete. Using a wolf is another method of creating the same situation of consciousness. The struggle of this Steppenwolf aims at spiritual immortality, and this struggle is omnipresent in Harry Haller's dreams. To cast aside the trivialities around him, and to be "soaring" among the immortals is the aim of Haller in his suffering. It is for this reason that Haller sees Goethe and Mozart –the Immortals– so often in his dreams. They are archetypes of genius for him, modes of existence that he sees far above the herd of bourgeoisie lifestyles. He sees the trials of being true and pure as the route to greatness: Thus, like a precious, fleeting foam over the sea of suffering arise all those works of art, in which a single individual lifts himself up for an hour so high above his personal destiny that his happiness ... Among psychologists and sociologists, there is much debate about exactly how important this attachment is and why. At the turn of the century, the treatment of new–born babies was regarded as having little significance for later life, because babies were thought to be immune to influence. Such idea was attacked by Sigmund Freud. He believed the relationship a child has with his mother was a prototype on which all future relationships were based. This second phase of attachment is more widely accepted than the first, and has far greater long– term significance (Bee, 1995). However, the main concern is what happens if the child does not form a primary parental attachment. The most obvious case is of children who form no such attachment at all. Harlow (1962) having studied the attachment behavior in rhesus monkeys followed this up with a study of the consequences of having no attachment at all. He raised monkeys in isolation for periods of time, and found that those who had no contact with their mothers, nor any peers during the first year of their lives were severely disturbed by the experience. When brought out of isolation, these monkeys did not participate in the active play, which is characteristic of normal monkeys, instead they huddled and withdrew. Once they turned into matured monkeys, they also proved to be incapable of mating, and those that were artificially inseminated were incompetent parents. Interestingly, monkeys who had not experienced being loved by a mother showed no love for their children, and even abused them horrifically. It is widely believed that one's own destiny is created by fate. However, some also consider the possibility that one's own choices can determine the reality of one's existence. In Harry Potter, JK Rowling uses fate and choice as forces which shape the events revolving around her protagonist, Harry Potter, as well as the other characters in the story. An author will use a unique combination of words and storytelling to create another world for the reader to envision. Often times, these stories are nothing more than the creativity of the author to make something unique that will draw a person in. These stories are usually based on very few real world occurrences, people and places. However, if we look deeper into these stories, we can see a point of view into the world the authors lived in. Authors have learned how to write fictional stories that engage people, while unknown to the reader, the story is giving them an in depth glimpse into the political realm of the author's life. No other important concept has been used in literature more than various forms of discrimination. We can look at many stories and while it may not be shown right out, in many pieces of literature we can see an undertone of discrimination. Two of the most common examples of discrimination are racism and sexism. • 24. Essay about My Brilliant Racing Career As I enter my last semester of high school, I have to starting thinking about making a plan for the future. The problem for me was actually making a decision that would be right for me, I could not decide what I wanted to do until a few weeks ago. But I finally made my decision about what I think I will enjoy doing, and making a career out of it. There are many paths I can and could take, but the automotive area is the one that sticks out to me. The two technician schools I have chosen are UTI, Universal Technician Institute, and WyoTech University, both of which are tech schools and will help get started. But that is the path I have chosen to go for, and I am going to stick with it. Cars and other types of automobiles have always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is why I have chosen to go into the automotive world. In order to be like my grandpa, I have to start learning more about how he got to where he is. The first step for me to take is going to an automotive technician school. I found a few places such as UTI (Universal Technician Institute), and Wyotech University which are both great places to get started. My plan so far is to take UTI's 51 week starting program in order to get me going. After that I will be going to their main school in Charlotte, North Carolina. Once I'm there I will take a racing technician class which is around 15 weeks long, and that puts me right into the seat of racing. After researching some more I found out that if I am in the top 5 students of the racing program, I get the opportunity to be picked up and hired by an actual racing company such as Porsche, Ford, Mercedes, Chevrolet and maybe even McLaren, and get to work for them which would be an honor. But even to get that opportunity I have to start somewhere, and I feel like UTI is a good place for me to start. At UTI the learning environment looks like a collage campus from the outside, but on the inside it is one big garage full of all types of cars. The teachers are all certified automotive technicians and master mechanics; they will teach me everything I will need to know. Most of the students are like I am; we all share a burning passion and love for cars, and we all strive to gain more knowledge about them. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Harry Potter Vs. Christians Essay Who has never dreamed of witches, broomsticks and full moon light? I always wished, when I was younger, I could turn and do magic like a witch. I even bought little magic kits, but it was nothing like the magic I wanted to produce. In my teen years, a book called Harry Potter caught my attention. It took me to a world I thought could only belong in my head. J.K. Rowling brought words of description to my dreams and brought out the little witch and wizard in many children's lives. I have not been able to find a more descriptive, memorable, imaginative, and well–written books for both children and adults to read and enjoy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Harry Potter books make witchcraft and the practice of magic seem appealing and fun; therefore, parents shouldn't allow their children to read them. This particular issue is the source of most Christianity complaints and protests against the Harry Potter books. Christians who express nothing but disdain for the separation of church and state when it comes to the government promoting Christianity, suddenly become defenders of the principle. They are arguing that schools are inappropriately promoting religion when students are encouraged to read Harry Potter. Even if they are hypocritical, it would matter if they are right because schools shouldn't encourage students to read books that promote a particular religion. Most people tend to regard censorship as a bad thing, but if the Harry Potter books really do promote witchcraft then perhaps there haven't been enough challenges. If the Harry Potter books don't promote witchcraft, but merely include witchcraft as part of the fabric of a fantasy world, then complaints are less about the books themselves. Then the problem must be something else, possibly the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Albrecht Von Haller's 'Die AlpenThe Alps In English' In his 1729 poem Die Alpen–The Alps in English–Swiss Albrecht von Haller paints an idealized portrait of mountain life based on his journeys thorough the Swiss Alps while working as a botanist. Haller describes the beauty of the landscapes with flowery, sensual language: "the plum of honied flavor" (Haller, 57), "circling peaks create a rim of gleaming blue" (Haller, 65), and "The ambient air is full of scents and ambergris"(Haller, 69). Haller likens to the mountain communities as a sort of utopian society with his glorifying descriptions and admiring, awestruck tone.Even when describing the dark days of winter and rough, rock strewn dirt, he responds that the hardworking, mountainous people take their challenges in stride and build themselves into stronger people, which leads to what Haller really says with his poem. Hidden between descriptions of nature Haller comments on the tight knit communities living in unity with each other away from vice and greed. Haller builds an image of a wholesome and tight knit mountain community based around shared wisdom, respect for one another, and traditions. He comments on the two main communal relationships–that of the village as a whole and the household community structure. Due to the repetitive nature of life in the mountains–every year consistently cycles between Spring coming with lush fields for the cattle, planting seeds over the Summer, the Fall harvest, and finally Winter a time to rest and spend time with family–the elders ... • 27. Skinner 's Behavioral Approach On Analyzing Myself For this paper I am going to focus on B. If one has inherited genes that code for a more aggressive response to external stimuli, then that person may have a greater ability to be aggressive than one that lacks those ... • 28. Harry Potter 's The Casual Vacancy After the success of her popular Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling has recently branched out from writing children's literature. Her first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy, explores more mature topics and is aimed at a new demographic than her previous works. She challenges social issues with her dark themes and her impeccable writing style captures the wide range of problems at the heart of a small town. It becomes more apparent throughout the novel that each character is connected in a web of misfortunes. Each individual has their own flaws and it becomes more apparent that there are additional underlying issues at the center of the "pretty little town" (Tait). J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy, Krystal Weedon is the troubled hero of the novel as she struggles to overcome difficulties in her life after the death of her mentor, Barry Fairbrother. The author behind this controversial narrative has become one of the world's most decorated authors due to the widespread success of her novels. Although she is well–known today, Rowling had very humble beginnings. Born on July 31, 1965 to Peter and Anne Rowling, Joanne became the newest addition to her family beside her older sister, Diana. • 29. Steppenwolf : The Idea Of The Absurd Within Harry Haller Steppenwolf also incorporates the idea of the Absurd within Harry Haller. As established earlier, the wolf–side of him represents absurd existence. While he does struggle with the Absurd, it does not necessarily mean that he does not understand or recognize the Absurd. This monologue in the novel establishes such: ....and it is all compulsory, mechanical and against the grain....and indeed it is this never–ceasing machinery that prevents their being. like me, the critics of their own lives and recognising the stupidity and shallowness, the hopeless tragedy and waste of the lives they lead, and the awful ambiguity grinning over it all. And they are right, right a thousand times to live as they do, playing their games and pursuing their business, instead of resisting the dreary machine and staring into the void as I do who have left the track...though now and then in these pages I scorn and even deride them, or that I accuse them of the responsibility of my personal misery. but now that I have come so far, and standing as I do on the extreme verge of life where the ground falls away before me into bottomless darkness... (87) Here, Harry explicitly acknowledges that the aspect of the Absurd, the "ambiguity" and "void" that is contained within it, perpetuate his suffering and alienation. The metaphors on the bourgeois and the imagery used in this passage accentuate the vividness of his experience and that he is not unaware what the wolf means, but that he simply cannot be at ease ... One of the best examples would the the Harry Potter novel series by J. K. Rowling. The Hero, Harry potter himself, and the Shadow or villain, Voldemort or Tom Riddle. They are similar by their blood statue, and treatment at the hands of muggles, and how people are drawn to them. The orphanage of Tom's was much alike to the house of the Dursleys. Children hated and bullied them, the adults neglected and took away natural rights, the living conditions were horrible lacking, the food was sparse. The only real difference was the Voldemort was raised in World War II and that he had no blood relation to the others there. Neither of them had any idea of what their family roots were. Its because of this treatment from the muggles that they formed into whom they were. • 31. Literary Criticism : ' Not Just A Pretty Face ' Alyshia Sechoka Dr. Catherine Cox History of Literary Criticism 2 December 2014 Not Just a Pretty Face METHOD Despite how the word may sound, deconstruction means to deconstruct, not to destroy. Deconstruction is always simultaneously affirming and undoing. Deconstruction refers to a technique for reading and analyzing texts developed by Jacques Derrida, Paul de Man, and others; this, in turn, is connected to a set of philosophical theories about language and meaning. As a result of the popularity of this technique and theory, the word "deconstruct" is often used as a synonym for criticizing or demonstrating the incongruity of a position. It is a way to interpret literary, religious, and legal texts as well as philosophical ones, and was adopted by French feminist theorists as a way to make clearer the deep male bias that was embedded in European literature and traditions. In order to deconstruct a text, one must take it apart along the structural "fault lines" (IEP) created by ambiguities that are fundamental in one or more of its key themes in order to reveal the contradictions that make the text possible. For example, Derrida, in "Plato's Pharmacy," deconstructs Socrates' criticism of written word. He contends that it suffers not only from inconsistencies internally because of Socrates analogy between memory and writing, but also because his ideas come to us only through his written word. Many deconstructive arguments center on the analysis of its oppositions. The person ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John Rowe Townsend once argued that the only practical definition of a children's book is one that appears on the children's list by a publisher. Contemporary publishers are not making that distinction any easier; for example, Maurice Sendak's Outside Over There (1981) was published as a picture book for both children and adults, and J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series is available in adult and children's versions with the only difference being the book's cover art. While folk and Fairy Tales were not originally intended for children, they have become a staple of children's literature since the early nineteenth century. On the other hand, many books written for and widely read by children during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are considered historical children's literature today and are read almost exclusively by adult scholars of children's literature. Children's literature has been written, illustrated, published, marketed, and purchased consistently by adults to be given to children for their edification and entertainment. Generally speaking, it is the intended audience rather than the producers of the texts who define the field. From grades three to about eight, I read almost every night and I read so much that I got in trouble quite a lot for reading. I haven't read a whole lot in the past few years because there haven't really been any series that interested me. The Maze Runner series was really good and I read that last year. The last good series before that was the Gone series. In addition to books, I spent, and still do spend, a lot of time on the internet reading about topics that interest me. I'm constantly looking for new books to read. I also really liked the Harry Potter series of books, I read them all in the eighth grade. I remember when I was young I read a lot of books. I kind of 'hit my peak' with reading at age ten through eleven. I read every night, sometimes I would read up until midnight. I read so much that I actually got in trouble at school multiple times for reading while class was going on. I remember a moment when the teacher was so frustrated with me for reading while he was talking, he berated me in front of the class. That wasn't a good experience, and I remember being really embarrassed. I had a lot of bullying problems at the time and a few of them were in that class, so that gave them more ammo. Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act H.R. 3590 (111th): Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act When president Obama was a candidate in the 2008 election he promised wide scale health care reform that would increase the availability and affordability of medical insurance for a large portion of the American population. At the time of his campaign, millions of low–income Americans were stuck in the Medicaid gap – where they could not afford health insurance, but also were not eligible for the joint state and federal government Medicaid program. Of those people many were considered below the poverty threshold, however due to strict state regulations these individuals or families did not qualify for insurance through Medicaid. As a result, when these Americans needed to be seen by doctors, insured tax paying American's would be stuck with their bills. In order to alleviate this problem, president Obama decided to lead a major campaign to increase the affordability of health care. Through draft bills in the house and senate, the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obama Care, covers a large portion of Americans who before it became a law would be left without insurance. The bill has two main parts – making healthcare affordable to low income families and increasing the scope of Medicaid eligibility. Before ObamaCare, families and individuals who were not covered by employers for healthcare had to seek out insurance on their own. This task proved very difficult as insurance providers charged steep prices for coverage. In short, health care coverage was not affordable to a large portion of the population. The law seeks to cover Americans who are between 138% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level. Amusing Ourselves to Death: It's Time to Stop Laughing The form of communication created by the television is not only a part of how our modern society communicates, but is has changed public discourse to the point that it has completely redefined it, argued Neil Postman in his convincing book Amusing Ourselves to Death. He viewed this as very harmful, and additionally so because our society is ignorant of it as they quickly becomes engulfed in its epistemology. When faced with the question about whether the television shapes or reflects culture, Postman pointed out that it is no longer applicable because "television has gradually become our culture" (79). We are now in the "information age" where we demand to be informed, yet are told in such a way that we think we know so much, but in fact we are becoming increasingly ignorant. Postman made it clear that his book is not an attack on the television itself. Instead he asserted that, supplied by the television's form, it is the change in the definition of how we learn, and thus perceive, the world around us that is under his criticism. When it comes to entertainment, Postman admitted that the television does an excellent job. "Television [...] serves us most usefully when presenting junk–entertainment; it serves us most ill when it co–opts serious modes of discourse– news, politics, science, education, commerce, religion–and turns them into entertainment packages" (159). The television does not require viewers to carry thoughts from minute to minute, and their eyes are never unstimulated, as the average duration of a camera view is a mere 3.5 seconds (86). Such brevity of thought and picture are a drastic difference from the way we used to get our information. That is, through the monopoly of the print media. Then contiguous information, uninterrupted by advertisements and thoughts not spliced into sentence–long segments, was expressed from cover to cover. • 39. The Death Of The Frontier And Progressive Era Essay Ragtime is full with a myriad number of characters, from Harry Houdini to Booker T Washington, but the pivotal characters in my eyes were Mother and Father. There's something to be said when the main characters of a novel don't even have names, unlike the many other minor characters, who were major players in history. What makes them stand out even more is the fact that Mother and Father weren't the only fictional characters, however, they as long as all of the members of their family, including Little Girl who would join Mother's family at the end of the tale, were the only ones who were not named. That's because it's an obvious way for Doctorow to use them as a symbol for the typical middle–class American family during the Progressive Era. However, this is not the only role they had. In addition, the death of the Frontier and the birth of the Progressive Era is shown in Ragtime through the developing relationship between Father and Mother who represent the Frontier and Progressive Era respectively. The relationship they share is a unique one and vital to the image Doctorow is trying to depict, the change occurring in time. There's a reason Father and Mother, a married couple, were used in this way rather than another relationship, and that is because an era does not erratically die, but rather the merging of new and old ideas forms a marriage between the two eras before one is completed. • 40. Harry Haller In "Steppenwolf," Hermann Hess's main character Harry Haller is a man divided by two natures that are in constant conflict. On one hand he is a wolf who is a rebel against society's norms. The wolf is a vicious loner who thinks that the evils of the world will prevail over the good. On the other hand there is a humanistic side of Harry. The humanistic side allows Harry to fanaticize a dream world and go along with the norms of society. He is positive about the world and is good. The humanistic side resembles a longing to be within the bourgeois, which is defined as the middle class. As these two natures are constantly battling and in conflict with one another, one must win and one must lose. Even though Harry Haller has moments of happiness and fantasy, on the whole I believe he is a pessimist because he often acts rebellious, unpredictable, and suicide. This correlates with Schopenhauer's man vs brute. The man would have the same characters as Harry's humanistic side while the brute shares common features from the brute. Harry Haller's dual nature is in an everlasting competition with each other. The narrator states, "In him the man and the wolf did not go the same way together, but were in continual and deadly enmity" (42). This quote states that his dual nature is always in a continual battle and that they never see through the same eyes. The wolf and the man are direct opposites of one another. Never do they side on one thing together. The wolf connects to enmity because the wolf is animalistic and dangerous. The wolf is considered a pessimist because it believes evil will prevail over the good. That is why it is deadly. I think that the author uses the word enmity to show the audience how strongly one side dislikes the other. I think that these two sides don't just have different views but also don't like each other's views and one is always trying to overpower the other. The wolf corresponds with the brute from Schopenhauer's "On the Suffering of the World" by thinking that the human's hopes and dreams will only cause more disappointment and pain. "Unless suffering is the direct and immediate object of life, our existence must entirely fall of its aim" (Schopenhauer 455). I believe this means ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I wasn't brave enough for Gryffindor, too pessimistic for Hufflepuff, too dumb for Ravenclaw, and not cunning enough for Slytherin. Maybe I wouldn't get sorted into a house, and I would just have to sleep in Dumbledore's office. That would be cool, maybe I would get to braid his beard. "Whatcha thinking about?" George asked from beside me. We were on our way to the Leaky Cauldron, where apparently Harry was staying after he blew up his aunt. We all had a good laugh about that.
