Literary Analysis A Good Man Is Hard To Find
A Good Man is Hard to Find Within the text written by Flannery O'Connor, a family finds
themselves on a vacation heading south from Atlanta to Florida with intentions of a family vacation.
The grandmother, who is found to be predominant in the text shows concern as she reads an article
of a man on the loose known as the "Misfit". Throughout the text, readers find that the families
vacation that they intended on soon becomes one that they want to escape. Illustrated throughout
this text are many forms of literary structure and aspects of heroism. To keep the peace among their
journey, the grandmother is seen to have many exaggerated stories that are told to her grandchildren
to keep them quiet. Found within the stories that the grandmother expresses, examples of literary
structure are shown. For instance, the grandmother exemplifies flashbacks as she discusses times
when there was not evil within the world referring to the misfit criminal among them. The
grandmother told stories such as one about a man leaving watermelon on her porch for her in her
maiden days and of an eerie house that she knew as a young girl. The grandmother also implements
aspects of compare and contrast as she discusses similarities and differences between her younger
years compared to the time that her family was living in now. Found at the introduction of the story,
an example of projection is shown as the family starts their journey with an argument about why
they should not go to their desired

Beowulf : The Literary Elements Of Poem In British Literature
What makes tone something so important in an epic hero story? Many of the epic hero stories have
some kind of tone in it. In British literature you often see many literary elements, but the tone is a
main element that demonstrates everything on what the story deals with. Beowulf, "Gilgamesh", the
Iliad and Hercules all have the same tone that ties it up together. The climax in epic hero stories is
something people should look at. This is where the most exciting or most importantly the intense
point of something happens. In Beowulf we are presented with many literary elements. We have
imagery as a big element in Beowulf and other elements, but something that is important is the
climax of this epic hero story. The climax was shown in many ways, and the way it was shown made
the story intense. Towards the end of the story, Beowulf has to go through a big challenge. After
going through so many challenges he finally thought it was all over he thought he would finally live
happily ever after. But truth is that he never knew what was waiting for him back in Geatland. In
Geatland Beowulf has to be the great hero, he is and defend his people in the city from this big
horrible monster (Shmoop "Beowulf Plot Analysis."). This made everyone nervous because this
challenge was when evil and good had the biggest tension. This would also determine which is
strongly good or evil. (Sparknotes "Beowulf"). In Gilgamesh there is a whole different climax. It is
the same as intense, but

Beowulf Literary Analysis
Mythology is a series of stories made by a culture to entertain or to increase knowledge of their own
beliefs. Over last few centuries, many cultures have created stories to demonstrate their valiant
strength or superiority of their customs. Not only that but, they also try to use these myths to
increase faith in their religions. Nevertheless you may find texts confusing because you many think
it is about a hero or the importance of religion. On example, of a myth that has received a large
amount of criticism is the mythical story of Beowulf. In this literary analysis you will find how the
religion of Christianity has a strong connection on how the myth was developed. In the myth
Beowulf there are three kingdoms, which are the Geats, the

Beowulf: A Hero Of Epic Proportions
Beowulf: A Hero of Epic Proportions "And so Beowulf's followers/ Rode.../ Crying that no better
king had ever/ Lived, .../ So open to his people, so deserving of praise" (l. 838–42). Beowulf was
originally recited in Old English by scops in mead halls. The epic of Beowulf was first written down
by an anonymous Christian monk around 700 A.D. Since then, Beowulf has achieved levels of fame
unrivaled by any other work of literature. Beowulf has survived as a literary masterpiece for over
1,300 years as a result of its vivid imagery, varied tone, and unique diction and style. Firstly, the
powerful imagery in Beowulf brings life to the poem. In the beginning, Grendel slinks into Herot
Hall, slaughters upwards of thirty men, and flees to his lair, dragging their bleeding carcasses behind
him. The images of Grendel's savage attacks portrays him as a figure of death and darkness. The
lake that Grendel inhabits is as vile and disgusting as he is. It is a hellish cesspool of bloody, boiling
water that radiates pure evil. Animals and humans alike avoid that damnable ... Show more content

Beowulf begins on a note of mystery. Herot Hall stands empty for twelve years by reason of
Grendel's vicious attacks. Beowulf arrives in Zealand, becomes a braggart, and vows to kill Grendel.
As Grendel slithers into Herot for the last time, the tone rapidly shifts to a more climatic ambiance,
growing more and more dramatic with every line. The tone shifts a third and final time at the
beginning of Passage Fourteen. As the epic begins to come to a close, the tone becomes quite
somber and mournful. As Beowulf takes his last breaths, he leaves this world with only one desire –
to be remembered until the end of time. All throughout his kingdom, Beowulf's followers tell of
their sorrow and sing beloved praises for their dead king. Each time the tone shifts, it illustrates the

The X-Men : Anti-Morality Of Characters
Introduction People have always felt the urge to classify characters as heroes or villains, however
today more writers and readers recognize that the morality of characters is not as clear–cut as pure
good and evil, allowing characters to step out of the traditional label of hero and villain. Despite this
fact, fans still feel the need to restrain a character's morality into a definable box, whether it be anti–
heroes (protagonists who have flaws), anti–villains (villains with heroic goals or virtues), or the
classic heroes and villains. Yet debates arise amongst fans when a character's morality does not
clearly fit under one label, especially when their morality does not match their literary function in
the story. A prime example of this conflict can be witnessed within the X–Men fandom. The X–Men,
a team of Marvel superheroes, have become a well–known metaphor for the suppression of various
minority groups. The X–Men are mutants, people born with superhuman abilities, that fight for
equality and peace between the humans and themselves. On the contrary, the main antagonist,
Magneto, believes that humans and mutant's cannot live in harmony. He believes mutants are
evolutionarily superior to humans and that violent measures are the only way subdue human threats.
Since Magneto's principles contradict the X–Men's morality, and his pro–genocide ideology is
deemed unethical by our modern societal standards, comic book writers and fans of the X–Men
traditionally classify him as a

Without these qualities, any danger he encounters could not be successfully defeated. Theseus

young lives from being eaten by holding Minotaur down, and ". . . with his fists –– he had no other
weapon –– he battered the monster to death" (126). He utilizes this outstanding power to conquer
and survive the great Labyrinth adventure. Theseus also uses his smart instinct in a survival setting.
Ariadne had given Theseus a ball of thread to help salvage his tracks from the entrance. Theseus
with the thread was to ". . . fasten at one end to the inside of the door and unwind as he went on"
(126). Theseus could have ignored the nice gesture since it was unfair to use, but he choses to

Definition Essay: Who Can Become A Hero In Literature
Who Can Become a Hero
In literature, heroes come in all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life. Many heroes seem to
come from poverty of those that are oppressed and need to be delivered. However, "there are no
precise rules about who should receive heroic status" and anyone is welcome to attaining such a title
(Peter Jones, "Ancient and Modern"). While most authors signify a hero as someone who stands for
something morally correct and understood to be good, authors have also painted specific to also
have a tendency to do wrong. Many authors have written about heroes that are willing to do
anything to stop an evil force, including becoming evil to do so. Heroes throughout literature have

Whether they be comic, tragic, or the typical hero, they are always capable of changing our ideals
and thoughts into those that can better us. They carry the potential to help us see a world that we had
not previously before seen. As we study literature, one of the most important aspects to study are the
heroes. Without studying this broad topic, we are unable to see how we are affected by the everyday
heroes in our lives such as family and friends. The most arbitrary heroes we see are parents that have
raised individuals of respect and honor. Without the literary heroes that we see sacrifice everything
for a cause, we would not be able to notice the sacrifices that others make on our behalf on a daily
basis. It is only through the heroes that we have in literature that we are able to do our best to fill our

Beowulf 's Heroic Qualities That Convey His Nobility And...
Beowulf exemplifies heroic qualities that convey his nobility and courage. The poem named
Beowulf has no known author. The author of the poem is known to be a Anglo–Saxon poet. The
poem, "Beowulf", is an Old English epic poem. The character, Beowulf, is a noble hero who offered
to help King Hrothgar by fighting a demon named Grendal. He fought many enemies before and
while becoming a king. Beowulf is a loyal and noble hero to the people of Geats and Danes. Epic
heroes are defined with specific qualities that this particular literary epic hero fits into. Many literary
heroes are described with particular characteristics, and Beowulf fits those standards in order to be
considered a hero. Beowulf expresses many heroic qualities that depict him as a noble and loyal
leader.
Beowulf, an epic hero, is significant and glorified because of the heroic endeavors that he performs
in. The poem stated, "They extolled his heroic nature and exploits and gave thanks for his greatness,
which was the proper thing for a man should praise a price whom he holds dear and cherish his
memory..." (II. 442–445). After defeating both Grendel and Gendel 's mother Beowulf was praised
for it and defined as a true hero. The character, Beowulf, terminated a dragon who was woken by a
goblet and was later wounded, threatening his life. For his everlasting bravery, the people of Geats
and Danes admired him for his superhuman actions. Beowulf was noble to his people, so everyone

Atticus Finch Hero
The word hero does not have a universal definition. Some may say that a hero is a person who fights
against monsters or criminals to save the day, or people who have superhuman qualities. Some may
claim that a hero is more about what the person has inside of them and can be a seemingly average
person in society. In general, heroes can live among us everyday. In Harper Lee's stellar novel, To
Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is portrayed as a kind man with a good head on his shoulders.
Atticus Finch has broken out of the narrow literary definition of hero and has created his own
category: a common man with exceptional, noble qualities. Atticus Finch should be considered a
hero because Atticus was kind to the people of Maycomb, led his kids ... Show more content on

When To Kill a Mockingbird was originally published in 1960, America saw the mixing of races in
society as "immoral, dangerous, even ungodly" (Levy). Plessy v. Ferguson was an U.S. Supreme
Court decision that made segregation constitutional under the idea of "separate but equal". Homer
Plessy refused to sit in a car specifically made for blacks and he said that his rights were violated.
But, the Supreme Court said it did not interfere with the 13th or 14th Amendments. Separate
accommodations included bathrooms, water fountains, parks, cemeteries, theaters, and schools
("Plessy v. Ferguson" 1,2). The African Americans facilities were not run as well as the white
facilities. Specifically, in To Kill a Mockingbird, the African Americans live in a type of wooden
shed which was close to the town dump, thus proving that they were not treated with the same
respect as white Americans ("Segregation Laws"). The novel clearly shows the racist culture in the
South. Jim Crow laws were a prime example of the ideology of white people during this time. In
North Carolina, whites and blacks were enrolled in the military separately. No one of color was
permitted in rooms where there were white troops ("Jim Crow Laws" 4). Notably, it was very
common that African Americans did not get a fair trial, as well as got accused for crimes they did
not commit ("Segregation Laws" 2). With this in mind, Atticus is a personal hero to Tom Robinson,
as Finch defends him during the peak of racism in America. Atticus has values that are common
values of a classic hero. He is swayed by the goodness of his heart and conscience as he takes on his
town in a seemingly unwinnable case ("Atticus Finch"). He wants to obtain justice for people with
no voice in society, specifically Tom Robinson ("3 Important Leadership Lessons..." 2). Atticus
shows an overwhelming amount of courage throughout the novel

Beowulf As An Epic Hero Research Paper
Beowulf as an Epic Hero
Throughout history there have been many examples of the epic hero. From the earliest Greek
mythology to the modern superhero, this motif has been recycled countless times. There are many
interchangeable qualities that define an epic hero, such as bravery, honor, and strength as well as
more literary aspects such as accomplishing impossible feats, escaping from an abysmal situations
and needing atonement. One of the first written accounts of such a character is Beowulf. Beowulf,
the main character of a story by the same name, fits the mold of an epic hero perfectly; he was the
prince of Geats, had super human strength, and was a incomprehensibly powerful warrior.

Atticus Finch As A Literary Hero
When you think of the greatest literary hero of all time you may think of Sherlock Holmes, Harry
Potter, or even Luke Skywalker. However, a literary hero that makes many top lists is Atticus Finch,
from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird is told from the perspective of Scout
Finch, the young daughter of Atticus Finch. Scout tells the story of a few years in her life, including
an influential trial. In this trial, Atticus is the lawyer for a black man, Tom Robinson, that was
accused of raping and beating a white woman. Atticus is very good at his job and is able to put
himself in the position of the other characters. That is also known as empathy. Atticus's fame as one
of the greatest literary heros could be not only attributed to his outstanding performance as Tom's
lawyer, but also to his ability to feel, teach, and make the readers feel empathy. In the novel, Atticus
feels empathy many times for many different characters. For example, Atticus has a very strong
closing argument in the trial that shows his feelings of empathy. Atticus makes a point that everyone
who is a part of the decision in the trial is white, while the person on trial is black. He ... Show more

Atticus can be good at keeping his emotions in check, but there are a few instances where he loses

pushed up his glasses, and rubbed his eyes. 'We had such a good chance,' he said. 'I told him what I
thought, but I couldn't in truth say that we had more than a good chance. I guess Tom was tired of
white men's chances and preferred to take his own.'" The reader is able to almost picture the pain in

Epic Poetry and Beowulf Pg
Epic poems have a unique set of characteristics that distinguish them from just an ordinary poem.
An epic poem must contain a hero that is male, noble, and of importance to society who gives long
formal speeches and travels over a vast setting. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the reader can see
distinct Anglo–Saxon political, economic, and religious values in the actions of the characters and
the things happening around them. Wealth in the Anglo–Saxon society, as seen in Beowulf, was used
as a means of reparations, rewards, and political standings. One can also tell that the Anglo–Saxons
where in a state of limbo between Christian and Pagan beliefs because of the ideas expressed by the
hero and his colleagues in Beowulf. The political standings ... Show more content on

Paganism can also be found during the poem when the narrator discusses fate, the nonexistence of
an afterlife, and the concept of fate. Before entering the dragons tower Beowulf tells his followers
that he will fight until "fate decides which of us [he or the dragon] wins" (Beowulf pg. 53). Fate is
only a belief in Pagan religion; Christians don't believe in a predetermined destiny. When Beowulf is
fighting the dragon and he begins to sense defeat he reflects on "a journey into darkness that all men
must make, as death ends their few brief hours on earth." (Beowulf pg.54). This "journey into
darkness" alerts the reader that Beowulf believes that his only life is here on earth and will venture
on to darkness with no afterlife. Christians believe that there is a life after death in heaven as
opposed to Pagans who believe in death as an end of existence.
Scattered in the poem the reader can find literary devices including stock epithets, kennings,
alliteration, allusions, hyperbole, and imagery. Stock epithets are adjectives that point out a special
trait of a character. One example of a stock epithet can be found in line 324 of Beowulf when
Grendel is described as being a "sin–stained demon" (Beowulf pg. 42). A kenning is a poetic
synonym found in Germanic poems as seen when Beowulf is called the "noble protector of all
seamen" (Beowulf pg.50). Alliteration is the repetition of

A Literary Hero Of William Shakespeare 's ' Othello '
"Houston, we have a problem!" Hopefully in my own space exploration project we will not need to

ever return to Earth, our goal is to find proof of alien life. I am responsible for choosing my own
compatriots that I feel would be the beneficial to my mission. To join me on my journey I am taking
with me three very different people, all with a varying set of strengths. First, I chose Beowulf to
accompany me due to his strong leadership and monster–killing qualities. Then, I decided I needed
someone to serve as Beowulf's second in command, the perfect candidate for this position would
definitely be Sir Gawain, a chivalrous knight of King Arthur's Round Table. For my third
companion I am going to take Shakespeare's character of Desdemona, from Othello. Beowulf stands
alone as the definition of a literary hero. Beowulf is not only a well respected king to his subjects,
but is also a national hero for the neighboring kingdom of Denmark. Once Beowulf makes a
commitment, like he has for this voyage, he stands by it, even if it costs him his life. Beowulf will
be an asset because of his strong convictions. Beowulf will serve as the leader of our expedition. In
case our expedition should meet with any inhospitable extra–terrestrials Beowulf would be able to

Examples Of Heroism In Sir Gawain
Sir Gawain: The Hero We Need Heroes are facets of literature that have existed for centuries.
Throughout this time, societies all over the world have sought out heroes in order to maintain
balance within their communities. As heroes were such a vital part of everyday life itself, it is no
surprise that they eventually became an integral part of a society's literary culture (make plural?).
Literature has seen the rise of different epic, chivalric and even romantic heroes in every era.
They're found in a wide range of works including epic poems such as Homer's "The Odyssey" and
even comic books turned film series such as Marvel's "Captain America." The heroes found in these

Gawain's character is one that is written by multiple authors over multiple texts, yet his defining
characteristics remain consistent across Arthurian legend. His reputation precedes him because his
"literary existence is not confined to a single work," as author Kate McClune notes (118). His
presence in various works of medieval literature creates an expectation of his character as well as his
heroism. Gawain is habitually portrayed as having the essential characteristics of a chivalric hero.
This is most evident in the poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" by an author known only as
the Gawain Poet. In the poem, Gawain's quest for and confrontation with the Green Knight adhere
to the heroic model of medieval literature and are vital to Gawain's legacy as a whole. His actions,
laid out in the model, display the traits that make him recognizable as an idyllic hero. In his modest
return to King Arthur's court after his encounter with the Green Knight, his humility is brought to
light. In his decision to embark on his quest in the first place, his courage is revealed. This decision
also highlights what is arguably Gawain's most notable knightly trait, his loyalty. As loyalty was
considered to be the "keystone of the entire feudal structure" it is significant that it is often noted as
one of his defining characteristics and the descriptions are precise in indicating that this was an
unswerving trait, especially in terms of his relationship with King Arthur (Markman 578). These
traits, along with his acts, make him the hero that medieval culture admired. As the perfect example
of a knight, the traits authors like the Gawain Poet assigned to his character exemplify what
societies in the Middle Ages would have considered to be the most important aspects of

Archetypes In To Kill A Mockingbird
A literary criticism is an informed written analysis or evaluation of a work of literature based on
literary theory. The hero archetype type is one common type of character used by an author which
displays morality, bravery, and self sacrifice. In the fictitious novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by
Harper Lee, the hero archetype is shown in multiple characters. This archetype is used to help
characterize the characters and help the reader understand them. Thought the story Lee uses the hero
archetype in the characters Atticus, Jem, and Boo Radley. One character that displays the traits of
the hero archetype is Atticus Finch. He first acts as a hero archetype when he accepts Tom's case, he
says, "The only thing we've got is a black man's word against the Ewells. The evidence boils down
to you–did–I–didn't"(Lee 117). In this situation, Atticus displays his sense of morality as he accepts
this hopeless case because he believes Tom is innocent. In order to uphold his morals he defends
Tom despite the risk to him and his family. This makes him a hero as he follows his own morals
despite the odds. Another example of Atticus heroism is when he defends his children against a dog,
Miss Maudie says, "but shooting is different from playing the piano or the like. I think maybe he put
his gun down when he realized God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things"(Lee
130). In this instance Atticus is brave in his diffence of his children against a rabid dog. He

Does Heroism Make A Difference
"I think we all do heroic things, but hero is not a noun, it's a verb" (Robert Downey, Jr.). To clarify,
when someone is identified as hero, he/she is someone who had taken actions. A hero makes
changes to the world, no matter how simple the change might be. It can be as simple as helping an
old lady cross the street. Heroism is willing to overcome obstacles, whether internal or external, to
make a difference for the greater good. Heroism functions in various ways. When a hero faces an
obstacle in their journey, they'll eventually overcome the obstacle by taking necessary actions.
Sometimes, a hero might refuse to face his/her problems, which demonstrates a non–heroic action.
In addition, a hero should be willing to change to make a difference. Jeff Bridges once stated, "One
of the greatest feelings in the world is knowing that we as individuals can make a difference"(Jeff
Bridges).
To explain, Jeff Bridges wanted to tell people that even one human being can make a difference to
the whole world; making a difference can lead to a greater outcome or a better solution. In any case,
a hero should have their own judgment on an event, in order to provide appropriate actions. Taking
actions is the key to how heroism functions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Comparing Markman's Sir Gawain And The Green Knight
Scholars have been analyzing Sir Gawain and the Green Knight to determine the true meaning of the
poem and the characters. All of this analysis has led many critics to believe that the work of
literature is a mythological poem and that the characters are super–human. On the other hand,
Marksman believes that "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight deserves the very best attention we can
give it as a literary work" (1). By looking at the poem as a romance allows the reader to truly
understand the perspective and meaning of the hero, Gawain. The traditional parts of romantic
literature, the challenge, beheading scene, and the complementary scene allow the reader to be

Gawain is neither an epic hero nor a modern hero. Gawain does not boast like an epic hero, yet his
actions are not unknown like a modern hero. Instead he is a romantic hero, who is supposed to show
the reader how a perfect human should act. All of the events that happen to Gawain have purpose –
"to test Gawain and, in so doing, to project his behavior as a model for the very best human
conduct" (5). Gawain goes through the various challenges and tests put in front of him to show the
reader what proper behavior is to be used in certain situations. A perfect example is when Sir
Bercilak's wife is tempting him. Gawain keeps his composure during the tests and stays true to his
moral standards. Finally, it is also important to pay attention to the other romantic details of the
poem. Some of these details include the poet's sense of time, use of geography, and the seasonal
change. As well, the poem contains Christian undertones – which are widely used in many romantic
pieces of literature. With this being said, these other details are of secondary importance to the
description of Gawain and the use of magic in the poem. Overall, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
deserves to be looked at as a literary work, and to not be characterized as only a mythological

Signs Preceding The End Of The World Analysis
The novel Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera brings to light many issues faced
by immigrant women. The novel follows the young Makina in her quest to find and bring home her
brother from what she imagines to be a mystical far away land. While the novel focuses on the
challenges of immigration, the underlying meaning is much more complex. In Yuri Herrera's Signs
Preceding the End of the World, the common misconception that women cannot be the strong
character in the novel is challenged. This is achieved by having the female protagonist, Makina, go
on a quest to save her brother, be a vital individual in her community, and fight the misogynistic
society she lives in.

to prove how the cell phone works and how Makina will be out of a job shortly due to this great new
invention. When the cellphones fail to work, Makina responds "Maybe you should have bought a
few cell towers too?" (Herrera 45). This is a big moment in the novel as it shows how Makina has
the intelligence to stand up for herself with just a simple statement. In his critique Long mentions a
specific quote from the text which is, "You are the door, not the one who walks through it" (Herrera
18). To this quote he states: "Makina's search for her brother obliges her to violate this rule, but it is
only when she dares to walk through a number of doors, literal and figurative, that she reaches a
definitive and enigmatic encounter with herself." (Long). I agree with this statement, as Makina's
journey is more about discovering herself than saving her brother. Throughout the novel a change is
noticed in Makina as she breaks her rules. She becomes more independent and her intelligence is
shown through the breaking of these rules. By breaking these rules, it justifies every battle she has
fought to become who she is. In conclusion, by making the protagonist an intelligent immigrant
female, Herrera proves that the female can be the

Beowulf As A Literary Hero
Many things evolve throughout time, including literature. Literature shapes many things including
who people view as heros and what troubles a hero might face. In the past and throughout literature,
heros had supernatural powers that made them greater than their peers and made them fit to be the
hero. Today, the literary hero is a normal person who is in an abnormal situation and can make it
through that situation, healthy and happy. The struggles of the hero have become more and more of
an everyday struggle rather than a big, life–or–death battle. The hero has also become more diverse
rather than the straight white male it has consistently been in the past. It shows how literature can

believed to be the ideal person; complete with strengths, flaws, aspirations, and codes that mold his
or her goals, decisions, and, ultimately, fate. Such figures, though imperfect, are celebrated because
they are attainable, for perfection is too far beyond the inspirational grip of imagination for many.
Each of these heroes, be they Gilgamesh, Beowulf, or Achilles, are motivated toward different goals
and take a varied and unique path in order to achieve these goals, which are shaped by the social and
political climates in which they are formed. However diverse these character arcs may be, they each
share overlapping characteristics that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This such loyalty is shared with the acclaimed literary hero Beowulf, who ultimately offers his life
in a fierce battle with the dragon for his people. The manner in which Gawain then faces the trials
set forth by the Green Knight also demonstrates the strict moral code of sir Gawain; that of the
chivalrous knight. His dedication to his code of chivalry is no more evident than in his encounters
with the lady of Bertilak's castle; while she incessantly makes advances toward Gawain in his
bedchamber, he summons his willpower each time to maintain his code of chivalry and refuse her
while remaining courteous. Blekner asserts the moral struggle that Gawain faces in this scene,
stating that "We are always aware that the real threat is not so much the considerable sexual
attractiveness of the lady's flesh as the young hero's fear of not living up to his worldy reputation for
cortaysye" (Blekner 367). The seduction scene not only illustrates Gawain's heroism through his
manner and courtesy towards Bertilak's wife, but also the humanity in his flaws that makes him a
true hero. While Gawain is stalwart in his belief in loyalty to his king and chivalry toward women,
he is also flawed in that he doesn't tell the lord of the castle about his prize. In these scenes, Gawain
shows a fracture in his otherwise infallible demeanor; a weakness that he is

Beowulf As An Ultimate Hero

Beowulf: the archetypal (ultimate) hero Archetypal heroes are found in many literary works, and in
varied forms. In literary terms, a hero (male) or heroine (female) is defined as a character that goes
against adversity, has great strength, courage, bravery, and who makes unselfish sacrifices, usually
for the greater good. The Collins English Dictionary defines "archetypal" as a perfect example of
something. Archetypes in literature was first applied by Carl Jung (1875–1961), a Swiss psychiatrist.
Jung recognized patterns in mythologies and stories regardless of the time period that was covered
by the literary work. Archetypal heroes present in various forms including warriors, ... Show more

It is that characteristic to want to help others even if it means sacrificing your life, that supports
designating Beowulf as an archetypal hero. The 14 men that went with Beowulf made up the band
of companions or supporters of the hero that is typically found in stories about heroes. Beowulf and
his men were very brave. Bravery is another characteristic of an archetypal hero. Upon safely
reaching Denmark, the great warrior, along with his men, devised a plan to trap and kill the monster.
Beowulf and Grendel came face to face in a good versus evil struggle. Heroes often face a struggle
of some sort (mental or physical).
Beowulf was very, very strong as heroes are. The evil monster was shocked at the strength of
Beowulf, not expecting to encounter one with such strength. Beowulf ripped the monster's arm off.
(Line #__) . Fearful for his life, Grendel struggled to free himself from the grip of Beowulf.
"Grendel's one thought was to run from Beowulf and flee..." (314–315). Great strength, as exhibited
by Beowulf and recognized by Grendel, is yet another characteristic of an ultimate hero.
In a gesture of boasting (as archetypal heroes do), Beowulf put the monster's arm on display like a
trophy for all to see. Grendel was not dead, but Beowulf had caused significant damage to the
creature. Another example of Beowolf's strength and courage is when the

An Aristotelian Tragic Hero Is A Literary Character Who
An Aristotelian tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment that ultimately leads to his
or her own destruction. An example of a true Aristotelian tragic hero is Creon from Sophocles' play,
Antigone. Creon is the tragic hero because he goes through the five stages of a tragic hero which
lead to his destruction. His tragic flaw is him being afraid to admit that he has made a mistake. He is
too proud of his power and his ability to make laws which leads to his son and wife committing
suicide. In Woman at Point Zero, Cooke's remarks about Firdaus being a tragic hero can be justified.
Firdaus proves to be a tragic hero through the five characteristics of the tragic hero.
The first characteristic of an Aristotelian tragic hero is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firdaus's "free choice" is to earn money and have some power by becoming a prostitute. After
Firdaus overhears Fawzy and Sharifa's conversation, she runs away and decides to become a
prostitute by herself.
The third characteristic of an Aristotelian tragic hero is the hero's downfall, which is their fault and
the result of their free choices. In reality, the tragedy is usually produced by some error in judgment
or their tragic flaw that subsidizes to the hero's lack of perfection. This is also known as the
Hamartia. Firdaus' tragic flaw is her not having faith in anyone. Her faith is her tragic flaw because
she is a woman who is always beaten by some male figure in her life; therefore, she never had to
have faith in anyone because she was abused and disappointed by others. When the police officer
grabs Firdaus by that arm and tells her to follow him to his house, Firdaus utters, "No... I have no
trust in men any more" (El Saadawi 83). This shows that Firdaus doesn't rely on faith anymore.
Also, because of the constant betrayal in her life, Firdaus fears of developing a close relationship
with anyone, including the psychologist that she talks to. "Firdaus reveals this as she struggles to
explain the heartache she felt when the one man she loved proved he did not love her back" (Cody).
"With love I began to imagine that I had become a human being...in love I gave my body and my

Chris Mccandless's Literary Hero
Do you ever have your moments when you want to get away from everything and everyone
sometimes to be alone, be able to do what you want, to be yourself, or maybe to just think? I know I
do and that's what Chris McCandless did by going into the wild. Although many may argue that
Chris McCandless's literary heroes were his motivation for going into the wild, I believe that
McCandless's main reason for his adventure was his problems he had with his parents..
First of all, Chris McCandless seemed to not want what his parents wanted for him, in the book Into
the Wild, Jon Krakauer states, "Chris submitted to Walt's authority through high school and college
to a surprising degree, but the boy raged inwardly all the while." (page 64). McCandless

Oroononoko Heroism
In Oroonoko, or The Royal Slave, Aphra Behn writes a historical tale about the Coramantien
grandson of an African king, Oroonoko. Oroonoko is often seen as the heroic figure of the story
because he fits the ideals of European literary heroes. As the so–called "hero," readers expect
Oroonoko to be able to conquer any "villain," like Byam and live happily ever after. Yet, he fails to
do so. Thus, the hero is unable to go through with his desire for revenge. As a reader, we are
confused. Why does Oroonoko lack the power as a "hero" to complete his revenge? The answer is
that he may not be the hero at all. After a close reading of the text, it seems like Oroonoko's black
skin is the cause of his ultimate failure. Behn repeatedly emphasizes the ... Show more content on

However the phrase "bating his colour" is placed in the middle of a perfect description, and
suddenly Oroonoko's sense of perfection collapses. Those three words damage Oroonoko's heroic
reputation. This important clause "bating his colour" has yet to receive much attention from many
readers. The rules of syntax create a conflict when reading the sentence. If the phrase was taken out
of the sentence, it would still be complete. At first glance, "bating his colour" could be easily
overlooked because commas offset this phrase (15). Behn seems to use commas to stress this phrase
rather than to offset it. It shifts the subject of the sentence, emphasizing that Oroonoko is, in fact, not
perfect at all. This creates a conflict in the experience of reading this sentence. It also conflicts with
the other descriptions of Oroonoko. Behn builds Oroonoko to be this amazing and beautiful hero,
but she also finds every chance to tear him down and point out his inadequacies because of the color
of his skin. This description proves that, according to Behn, no matter how perfect Oroonoko is, a
fatal flaw is the color of his skin.
Behn continues to lessen Oroonoko's heroic stature by attempting to Europeanize him and diminish
his self–identity. A hero is known for their self–confidence and uses that to help others. By getting
rid of someone's identity, he loses any sort of possibility of succeeding

The Witches As A Literary Hero In Shakespeare's Macbeth
The Witches are often seen to be of great importance in Shakespeare's Macbeth; not only are they
the first characters to speak, but their prophecies lay the foundation for Macbeth's ultimate spiral
into madness. However, their prominence does not necessarily entitle them to be labelled the
'heroines of the piece' that Eagleton describes. In order to evaluate Eagleton's classification of the
Witches, we must underpin the true conventions of a literary hero, both to an Elizabethan and
contemporary audience.
To begin our discussion of heroism, we must consider its literary origin, used by Agamemnon in
Book II of Homer's Iliad to address those who fought in the Trojan War as 'Friends, Grecian Heroes,
Ministers of Mars'. Here, we find the birth of the original epic hero: a courageous, grand and noble
character, admired for their adventurous quests and achievements. When juxtaposing the Witches
with this epic definition of the hero, it appears that they are the direct antithesis. Take, for example,
their discourse with Macbeth in Act IV, Scene I, in which he greets the Witches with 'How now, you
secret, black, and midnight hags! / What is't you do?'. His harsh use of the demeaning adjective
'hags', followed by a demand, convey a derogatory attitude towards them, which is furthered as he
continues 'I conjure you by that which you profess, Howe'er you come to know it, answer me.'
(IV.i.49–50). His command here is authoritative, and when coupled with the Witches dutiful

Beowulf: Merriam-Webster's Definition Of An Epic Hero
Merriam–Webster dictionary defines a hero as a mythological or legendary figure often of divine
descent endowed with great strength or ability. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the people regard
Beowulf as a hero of the Geats. He goes on adventures to fight vicious monsters while protecting the
people from these threats. Beowulf fits Merriam–Webster's definition of a hero while displaying
specific characteristics. Beowulf exemplifies traits of being a hero by showing courage, superhuman
capabilities, and showing loyalty to himself and others. Courage classifies as a trait that hero's must

Beowulf shows his loyalty when Hrothgar welcomes him, saying, "Beowulf, you've come to us in
friendship, and because of the reception your father found at court" (457–462). Hrothgar makes
peace between the Geats and the Danes, reaffirming Beowulf's loyalty. His loyalty becomes even
more evident when he speaks to Wealhtheow about why he comes to court. Beowulf states, "I had a
fixed purpose when I put to sea. As I sat in the boat with my band of men, I meant to perform to the
uttermost what your people wanted or perish in the attempt, in the fiend's clutches. And I shall fulfill
that purpose, prove myself with a proud deed or meet my death here in the mead–hall" (632–638).
Beowulf affirms that his loyalty lies with the king and the people, and that he would sacrifice his life
for them. Lastly, Beowulf makes it known that his loyalty will remain with the Danes, and that he
will be ready to fight whenever they need him. Hrothgar praises Beowulf, ". . . If your lord,
Hrethel's son, is slain by a spear, or falls sick and dies. . . I say that the Geats could do no better, find
no man better suited to be king, keeper of warriors and their treasure, than you. . . Beloved Beowulf"
(1841–1852). Loyalty classifies as a key attribute of a hero, and Beowulf perfectly demonstrates it

Compare And Contrast Holden Caaulfield And Catcher In The Rye
The characters Thomas More in A Man for all Seasons and Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye
are portrayed as heroes. According to the Oxford Dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for
his or her courage, other noble qualities or outstanding achievements. Although both More and
Caulfield display some of the above mentioned qualities they are not categorized as the same basic
hero. Each character portrays certain individual characteristics which classify them as specific hero
types. The types of heroes More and Caulfield are classified as, as well as which individual
character traits indicate this to the reader, will be identified and discussed throughout the essay.
Caulfield and More belong to different types of literature and have been created to serve particular
purposes. Thomas More was a real life person who lived during the reign of King Henry IIIV in the

Heroism is a general term which means having or performing the qualities of a hero. This past

using the 8th grade themes of Order and Chaos. Specifically in English, students have examined
both literary and real–life heroes which have either worked in areas of chaos or in order. In English,
students read novels written about heroes in areas of chaos and order. Personally I have learned the
nature of heroism through chaos and order by reading the book, The Outsiders. Ponyboy, the main
character, has acted as a hero in a time of chaos when he saved the children from a church on fire.
Ponyboy risked his own life to save those kids, which was an act

Characteristics Of Characters In Gilphash In The Epic Of...
As we read countless literary works throughout our literary careers, we become aware that certain
styles of characters reoccur throughout literature. These "similar" characters do not reappear in
many works because an author chose to copy another author's character; rather, these similar–like
characters continue to appear in different literary works, because an author is intentionally making
its character follow a specific archetype. An archetype is a character that establishes certain
characteristics that become associated with that specific style of character. There are many popular
archetypes, like the "Underdog", "Star–Crossed Lovers", or the "Hero". For a hero to follow the
"Heroic" archetype, the hero must possess something or a position that places him above the
common people, have a strong friendship with their companion, and experience a profound
revelation; Gilgamesh in The Epic of Gilgamesh perfectly embodies these characteristics. A
common characteristic that heroes across many literary works share is their possession of an object,
position, or ability that deems them superior to the common people. The many authors of The Epic
of Gilgamesh bestowed various attributes onto the character Gilgamesh to emphasize his heroicness.
Gilgamesh was born to be biologically superior to those he would rule. He is described to have been
given, "a perfect body. Shamash endowed him with beauty. Adad endowed him with courage, the

Gilgamesh vs. Oedipus
No two men are alike in anyway, same goes for heroes and tragic heroes. A hero is someone who
has given their life to be something bigger than oneself. A hero is someone who is brave, courageous
and someone you look up to. Aristotle referred to a tragic hero as, "someone who makes their own
judgement error that inevitably leads to their own destruction". Gilgamesh and Oedipus were some
of the biggest heroes in our literary studies. Gilgamesh and Oedipus lived their lives fearlessly and I
believe that is what made them such great heros. Gilgamesh and Oedipus were both labeled as
heroes, yet they differ in many ways.

By reading Oedipus Rex, it is certain that his own judgments led to his destruction. His greatest flaw
was making mistakes, he was once considered a phenomenal hero, yet his bad decisions led to his
tragic heroism. Oedipus crosses path with Laius, the king, which led to a fight and the slaying of
Laius. Oedipus then defeats the Sphinx by solving a mystery riddle to become king. He then married
the widow, Jocasta, not knowing it was his mother. Now being the King of Thebes, Oedipus, sent
Creon to see why the plague had started. Upon his return, Creon explained to Oedipus that the
plague had started by the murder of the former king, Laius. Creon stated, once the killer of Laius
was found, the plague would be lifted. Teiresias suspected that Oedipus was the killer of Laius, this
infuriates Oedipus. Oedipus' wife, Jocasta, confirms there is no way Oedipus could have killed the
former king. Jocasta tells Oedipus that Laius was killed at a three–way crossroad, right before
Oedipus arrived at Thebes. Oedipus then realized he was the one who had killed the former king,
Laius. Finding out the truth of her husband, Jocasta, then hangs herself. Oedipus, mourning the loss
of his wife and realizing the truth about himself, he gouges his eye out and immediately demands
punishment from Creon, who is now the king.
In conclusion, comparing these I found that they are more different than they are similar. I do

The soldier is one who is greatly respected. The warrior is known for his or her bravery on the

often do not understand the price of such an honorable position. The fear and suffering comes as a

new perspective of his residence. War rips away the dreams of fame and glory, and the reality of the
situation is shown. One's only wish is to return home away from the horrifying nightmare he or she

Beowulf Is An Epic Hero Theme
Epic Hero Essay
It is

Chaucer's Heroic Qualities
Moreover, a hero doesn't always have to be the protagonist of the story, but the literary work and
author can display heroic qualities. One example of this type of hero, in particular, can be seen in
Nevill Coghill's excerpt translation of Geoffrey Chaucer's satire The Prologue, is a literary piece of
work that is used to scrutinize certain members of society. Chaucer even depicts certain character's
to represent the groups in society and how they could change. However, Chaucer doesn't always
depict individuals throughout his satire who are problems in society, but he chooses to praise and
acknowledge exemplary individuals that have heroic characteristics and attributes. For instance,
Chaucer describes a knight stating, "Here was a Knight, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When examining her character, she is a nun who has taken a vow of poverty, which she didn't

Another example is when he introduces the Monk describing him as, "One of the finest sort/ Who

riding at a fence/ Was all his fun, he spared for no expense./ [I saw] his sleeves were garnished at the

relatively innocent considering he likes to hunt. However, on the other hand, considering a majority
of monks take similar vows that nuns do, the vow of poverty is a vow that monks should uphold
because of their vocation. In short these individuals are relatively normal, but when the individual is

Who Is Bilbo A Hero
Where would we be without heroes in fiction? What would we have left? No Luke Skywalker,
Harry Potter, Superman, Sir Lancelot, or Captain Ahab. Name a work of fiction that does not
revolve around or at least include a hero of some caliber. Ask yourself what stories could we still
enjoy without the greatest characters of literary history. We as people have shown time and time
again that nothing can beat our love for heroes, they have a special place in our hearts rivaled only
by their associated villains. Without them most stories just wouldn't be the same. The Hobbit is a
perfect example of the importance of heroism in literary fiction.
Bilbo Baggins is by no means a typical hero. Heroes are usually portrayed as being tall and
handsome. Bilbo is a halfling, therefore he is short and portly with hairy feet. Heroes are warriors
and their courage is apparent. Bilbo lives in a cozy hole in the ground spending his time blowing
smoke rings and eating more than three meals a day. Heroes are also normally viewed as fearless
and good at fighting, while Bilbo has never used a weapon before the events of The Hobbit, and is
afraid of the very idea of leaving his home of Hobbiton. When you compare Bilbo to someone like
Superman the differences are obvious. They are two very different characters, and yet they are both

Weakness is incredibly important in terms of making a hero. It is the human quality that allows for
people to relate. In Beowulf, Beowulf grows old by the end of the story and dies. He knows what
will happen and expresses his weakness and comes to term with it, "He knew well he'd seen the last
of this world's joys, that he numbered his last day" (Breeden Beowulf Act 12). Cavendish's
weakness was that she was a woman of that time. It is something so natural, like old age, that many

community and much of her brilliance was not appreciated until after her death. Still today women
have such a barrier, though luckily not nearly as dense as the previous generations. Butler, though

have are usually put to the test by a villain or monster with supernatural qualities as well. Anti–
heroes usually have bad traits or opposite characteristics from a normal hero. They usually end up
doing what would be seen as the right thing to do even with the non typical heroic traits. All of these
type of heroes have been presented throughout the history of the appearance of heroes in literature.
The definition of a real life everyday hero is much like that of a literary hero. It is a person that puts
oneself before others for a good cause. They typically exhibit characteristics of selflessness, bravery,
compassion, and courage. The meaning of a hero has been changed throughout time. In historical

Othello Definition Of A Hero Essay
Nowadays, society has evolved in different directions when it comes to defining a hero.
Some individuals may see a hero as someone who is known for their good deeds and remarkable
super powers like the ones that are shown today in films. Even though, this can be true to a certain
extent, these qualities are not the only ones that are used to compose the ideal hero. "As society has
progressed throughout the years, the characterization of who a hero is has also transformed in terms
of the protagonist itself." (Heroes). During the 1600s, the protagonist was not seen as the hero of the
play or poems like shown in William Shakespeare's tragedy, "Othello" and the epic poem "Paradise
Lost" written by John Milton." Based on both of these literary selections, the heroes can be
demonstrated by the villains Iago and Satan who in both the play and epic poem transformed the
stereotype of the protagonist always being the hero to be false. As the tragedy play of "Othello"
begins, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Iago begins to mislead Rodrigo into believing that Cassio has an affair with Desdemona, and
therefore, manipulates him to aggravate Cassio so he could leave the position Othello has granted
him, while at the same time figuring out how to convince Othello that his wife is cheating on him.
(Database Name). At a certain point Shakespeare guarantees to validate Iago's actions, and for this
reason, the audience can justify that his plan is acceptable because he did not get promoted to be a
lieutenant, which he was worthy of. In this case, the way Iago presents the heroic values among
society today would be by supremacy because although the plan is difficult to proceed he still
managed to show that the ideal leader takes charge no matter the circumstance in that particular

Literary Analysis A Good Man Is Hard To Find

  • 1. Literary Analysis A Good Man Is Hard To Find A Good Man is Hard to Find Within the text written by Flannery O'Connor, a family finds themselves on a vacation heading south from Atlanta to Florida with intentions of a family vacation. The grandmother, who is found to be predominant in the text shows concern as she reads an article of a man on the loose known as the "Misfit". Throughout the text, readers find that the families vacation that they intended on soon becomes one that they want to escape. Illustrated throughout this text are many forms of literary structure and aspects of heroism. To keep the peace among their journey, the grandmother is seen to have many exaggerated stories that are told to her grandchildren to keep them quiet. Found within the stories that the grandmother expresses, examples of literary structure are shown. For instance, the grandmother exemplifies flashbacks as she discusses times when there was not evil within the world referring to the misfit criminal among them. The grandmother told stories such as one about a man leaving watermelon on her porch for her in her maiden days and of an eerie house that she knew as a young girl. The grandmother also implements aspects of compare and contrast as she discusses similarities and differences between her younger years compared to the time that her family was living in now. Found at the introduction of the story, an example of projection is shown as the family starts their journey with an argument about why they should not go to their desired ... • 5. Beowulf : The Literary Elements Of Poem In British Literature What makes tone something so important in an epic hero story? Many of the epic hero stories have some kind of tone in it. In British literature you often see many literary elements, but the tone is a main element that demonstrates everything on what the story deals with. Beowulf, "Gilgamesh", the Iliad and Hercules all have the same tone that ties it up together. The climax in epic hero stories is something people should look at. This is where the most exciting or most importantly the intense point of something happens. In Beowulf we are presented with many literary elements. We have imagery as a big element in Beowulf and other elements, but something that is important is the climax of this epic hero story. The climax was shown in many ways, and the way it was shown made the story intense. Towards the end of the story, Beowulf has to go through a big challenge. After going through so many challenges he finally thought it was all over he thought he would finally live happily ever after. But truth is that he never knew what was waiting for him back in Geatland. In Geatland Beowulf has to be the great hero, he is and defend his people in the city from this big horrible monster (Shmoop "Beowulf Plot Analysis."). This made everyone nervous because this challenge was when evil and good had the biggest tension. This would also determine which is strongly good or evil. (Sparknotes "Beowulf"). In Gilgamesh there is a whole different climax. It is the same as intense, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Beowulf: A Hero Of Epic Proportions Beowulf: A Hero of Epic Proportions "And so Beowulf's followers/ Rode.../ Crying that no better king had ever/ Lived, .../ So open to his people, so deserving of praise" (l. 838–42). Beowulf was originally recited in Old English by scops in mead halls. The epic of Beowulf was first written down by an anonymous Christian monk around 700 A.D. Since then, Beowulf has achieved levels of fame unrivaled by any other work of literature. Beowulf has survived as a literary masterpiece for over 1,300 years as a result of its vivid imagery, varied tone, and unique diction and style. Firstly, the powerful imagery in Beowulf brings life to the poem. In the beginning, Grendel slinks into Herot Hall, slaughters upwards of thirty men, and flees to his lair, dragging their bleeding carcasses behind him. The images of Grendel's savage attacks portrays him as a figure of death and darkness. The lake that Grendel inhabits is as vile and disgusting as he is. It is a hellish cesspool of bloody, boiling water that radiates pure evil. Animals and humans alike avoid that damnable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beowulf begins on a note of mystery. Herot Hall stands empty for twelve years by reason of Grendel's vicious attacks. Beowulf arrives in Zealand, becomes a braggart, and vows to kill Grendel. The tone shifts a third and final time at the beginning of Passage Fourteen. As the epic begins to come to a close, the tone becomes quite somber and mournful. As Beowulf takes his last breaths, he leaves this world with only one desire – to be remembered until the end of time. All throughout his kingdom, Beowulf's followers tell of their sorrow and sing beloved praises for their dead king. • 17. The X-Men : Anti-Morality Of Characters Introduction People have always felt the urge to classify characters as heroes or villains, however today more writers and readers recognize that the morality of characters is not as clear–cut as pure good and evil, allowing characters to step out of the traditional label of hero and villain. Despite this fact, fans still feel the need to restrain a character's morality into a definable box, whether it be anti– heroes (protagonists who have flaws), anti–villains (villains with heroic goals or virtues), or the classic heroes and villains. Yet debates arise amongst fans when a character's morality does not clearly fit under one label, especially when their morality does not match their literary function in the story. A prime example of this conflict can be witnessed within the X–Men fandom. The X–Men, a team of Marvel superheroes, have become a well–known metaphor for the suppression of various minority groups. The X–Men are mutants, people born with superhuman abilities, that fight for equality and peace between the humans and themselves. On the contrary, the main antagonist, Magneto, believes that humans and mutant's cannot live in harmony. He believes mutants are evolutionarily superior to humans and that violent measures are the only way subdue human threats. Since Magneto's principles contradict the X–Men's morality, and his pro–genocide ideology is deemed unethical by our modern societal standards, comic book writers and fans of the X–Men traditionally classify him as a ... He utilizes this outstanding power to conquer and survive the great Labyrinth adventure. Theseus also uses his smart instinct in a survival setting. Ariadne had given Theseus a ball of thread to help salvage his tracks from the entrance. Theseus with the thread was to ". . . fasten at one end to the inside of the door and unwind as he went on" (126). • 33. Atticus Finch Hero The word hero does not have a universal definition. Some may say that a hero is a person who fights against monsters or criminals to save the day, or people who have superhuman qualities. Some may claim that a hero is more about what the person has inside of them and can be a seemingly average person in society. In general, heroes can live among us everyday. In Harper Lee's stellar novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is portrayed as a kind man with a good head on his shoulders. Atticus Finch has broken out of the narrow literary definition of hero and has created his own category: a common man with exceptional, noble qualities. Atticus Finch should be considered a hero because Atticus was kind to the people of Maycomb, led his kids ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When To Kill a Mockingbird was originally published in 1960, America saw the mixing of races in society as "immoral, dangerous, even ungodly" (Levy). Plessy v. Ferguson was an U.S. Supreme Court decision that made segregation constitutional under the idea of "separate but equal". Homer Plessy refused to sit in a car specifically made for blacks and he said that his rights were violated. But, the Supreme Court said it did not interfere with the 13th or 14th Amendments. Separate accommodations included bathrooms, water fountains, parks, cemeteries, theaters, and schools ("Plessy v. Ferguson" 1,2). The African Americans facilities were not run as well as the white facilities. Specifically, in To Kill a Mockingbird, the African Americans live in a type of wooden shed which was close to the town dump, thus proving that they were not treated with the same respect as white Americans ("Segregation Laws"). The novel clearly shows the racist culture in the South. Jim Crow laws were a prime example of the ideology of white people during this time. In North Carolina, whites and blacks were enrolled in the military separately. No one of color was permitted in rooms where there were white troops ("Jim Crow Laws" 4). Notably, it was very common that African Americans did not get a fair trial, as well as got accused for crimes they did not commit ("Segregation Laws" 2). With this in mind, Atticus is a personal hero to Tom Robinson, as Finch defends him during the peak of racism in America. Atticus has values that are common values of a classic hero. He is swayed by the goodness of his heart and conscience as he takes on his town in a seemingly unwinnable case ("Atticus Finch"). He wants to obtain justice for people with no voice in society, specifically Tom Robinson ("3 Important Leadership Lessons..." 2). However, a literary hero that makes many top lists is Atticus Finch, from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird is told from the perspective of Scout Finch, the young daughter of Atticus Finch. Scout tells the story of a few years in her life, including an influential trial. In this trial, Atticus is the lawyer for a black man, Tom Robinson, that was accused of raping and beating a white woman. Atticus is very good at his job and is able to put himself in the position of the other characters. That is also known as empathy. Atticus's fame as one of the greatest literary heros could be not only attributed to his outstanding performance as Tom's lawyer, but also to his ability to feel, teach, and make the readers feel empathy. In the novel, Atticus feels empathy many times for many different characters. For example, Atticus has a very strong closing argument in the trial that shows his feelings of empathy. • 45. Epic Poetry and Beowulf Pg Epic poems have a unique set of characteristics that distinguish them from just an ordinary poem. An epic poem must contain a hero that is male, noble, and of importance to society who gives long formal speeches and travels over a vast setting. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the reader can see distinct Anglo–Saxon political, economic, and religious values in the actions of the characters and the things happening around them. Wealth in the Anglo–Saxon society, as seen in Beowulf, was used as a means of reparations, rewards, and political standings. One can also tell that the Anglo–Saxons where in a state of limbo between Christian and Pagan beliefs because of the ideas expressed by the hero and his colleagues in Beowulf. The political standings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paganism can also be found during the poem when the narrator discusses fate, the nonexistence of an afterlife, and the concept of fate. Before entering the dragons tower Beowulf tells his followers that he will fight until "fate decides which of us [he or the dragon] wins" (Beowulf pg. 53). Fate is only a belief in Pagan religion; Christians don't believe in a predetermined destiny. When Beowulf is fighting the dragon and he begins to sense defeat he reflects on "a journey into darkness that all men must make, as death ends their few brief hours on earth." (Beowulf pg.54). This "journey into darkness" alerts the reader that Beowulf believes that his only life is here on earth and will venture on to darkness with no afterlife. Christians believe that there is a life after death in heaven as opposed to Pagans who believe in death as an end of existence. Scattered in the poem the reader can find literary devices including stock epithets, kennings, alliteration, allusions, hyperbole, and imagery. Stock epithets are adjectives that point out a special trait of a character. One example of a stock epithet can be found in line 324 of Beowulf when Grendel is described as being a "sin–stained demon" (Beowulf pg. 42). A kenning is a poetic synonym found in Germanic poems as seen when Beowulf is called the "noble protector of all seamen" (Beowulf pg.50). Alliteration is the repetition of ... This trip is extremely dangerous, and it is not definite that we should ever return to Earth, our goal is to find proof of alien life. I am responsible for choosing my own compatriots that I feel would be the beneficial to my mission. To join me on my journey I am taking with me three very different people, all with a varying set of strengths. First, I chose Beowulf to accompany me due to his strong leadership and monster–killing qualities. Then, I decided I needed someone to serve as Beowulf's second in command, the perfect candidate for this position would definitely be Sir Gawain, a chivalrous knight of King Arthur's Round Table. For my third companion I am going to take Shakespeare's character of Desdemona, from Othello. Beowulf stands alone as the definition of a literary hero. Beowulf is not only a well respected king to his subjects, but is also a national hero for the neighboring kingdom of Denmark. Once Beowulf makes a commitment, like he has for this voyage, he stands by it, even if it costs him his life. Beowulf will be an asset because of his strong convictions. Beowulf will serve as the leader of our expedition. • 53. Examples Of Heroism In Sir Gawain Sir Gawain: The Hero We Need Heroes are facets of literature that have existed for centuries. Throughout this time, societies all over the world have sought out heroes in order to maintain balance within their communities. As heroes were such a vital part of everyday life itself, it is no surprise that they eventually became an integral part of a society's literary culture (make plural?). Literature has seen the rise of different epic, chivalric and even romantic heroes in every era. They're found in a wide range of works including epic poems such as Homer's "The Odyssey" and even comic books turned film series such as Marvel's "Captain America." The heroes found in these narratives act as a society's means of portraying the epitomic man. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gawain's character is one that is written by multiple authors over multiple texts, yet his defining characteristics remain consistent across Arthurian legend. His reputation precedes him because his "literary existence is not confined to a single work," as author Kate McClune notes (118). His presence in various works of medieval literature creates an expectation of his character as well as his heroism. Gawain is habitually portrayed as having the essential characteristics of a chivalric hero. This is most evident in the poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" by an author known only as the Gawain Poet. In the poem, Gawain's quest for and confrontation with the Green Knight adhere to the heroic model of medieval literature and are vital to Gawain's legacy as a whole. His actions, laid out in the model, display the traits that make him recognizable as an idyllic hero. In his modest return to King Arthur's court after his encounter with the Green Knight, his humility is brought to light. In his decision to embark on his quest in the first place, his courage is revealed. This decision also highlights what is arguably Gawain's most notable knightly trait, his loyalty. As loyalty was considered to be the "keystone of the entire feudal structure" it is significant that it is often noted as one of his defining characteristics and the descriptions are precise in indicating that this was an unswerving trait, especially in terms of his relationship with King Arthur (Markman 578). These traits, along with his acts, make him the hero that medieval culture admired. As the perfect example of a knight, the traits authors like the Gawain Poet assigned to his character exemplify what societies in the Middle Ages would have considered to be the most important aspects of ... • 57. Archetypes In To Kill A Mockingbird A literary criticism is an informed written analysis or evaluation of a work of literature based on literary theory. The hero archetype type is one common type of character used by an author which displays morality, bravery, and self sacrifice. In the fictitious novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the hero archetype is shown in multiple characters. This archetype is used to help characterize the characters and help the reader understand them. Thought the story Lee uses the hero archetype in the characters Atticus, Jem, and Boo Radley. One character that displays the traits of the hero archetype is Atticus Finch. He first acts as a hero archetype when he accepts Tom's case, he says, "The only thing we've got is a black man's word against the Ewells. The evidence boils down to you–did–I–didn't"(Lee 117). In this situation, Atticus displays his sense of morality as he accepts this hopeless case because he believes Tom is innocent. In order to uphold his morals he defends Tom despite the risk to him and his family. This makes him a hero as he follows his own morals despite the odds. Another example of Atticus heroism is when he defends his children against a dog, Miss Maudie says, "but shooting is different from playing the piano or the like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things"(Lee 130). To clarify, when someone is identified as hero, he/she is someone who had taken actions. A hero makes changes to the world, no matter how simple the change might be. It can be as simple as helping an old lady cross the street. Heroism is willing to overcome obstacles, whether internal or external, to make a difference for the greater good. Heroism functions in various ways. When a hero faces an obstacle in their journey, they'll eventually overcome the obstacle by taking necessary actions. Sometimes, a hero might refuse to face his/her problems, which demonstrates a non–heroic action. In addition, a hero should be willing to change to make a difference. Jeff Bridges once stated, "One of the greatest feelings in the world is knowing that we as individuals can make a difference"(Jeff Bridges). To explain, Jeff Bridges wanted to tell people that even one human being can make a difference to the whole world; making a difference can lead to a greater outcome or a better solution. In any case, a hero should have their own judgment on an event, in order to provide appropriate actions. Taking actions is the key to how heroism functions. ... All of this analysis has led many critics to believe that the work of literature is a mythological poem and that the characters are super–human. On the other hand, Marksman believes that "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight deserves the very best attention we can give it as a literary work" (1). By looking at the poem as a romance allows the reader to truly understand the perspective and meaning of the hero, Gawain. Gawain goes through the various challenges and tests put in front of him to show the reader what proper behavior is to be used in certain situations. A perfect example is when Sir Bercilak's wife is tempting him. Gawain keeps his composure during the tests and stays true to his moral standards. Finally, it is also important to pay attention to the other romantic details of the poem. Some of these details include the poet's sense of time, use of geography, and the seasonal change. As well, the poem contains Christian undertones – which are widely used in many romantic pieces of literature. With this being said, these other details are of secondary importance to the description of Gawain and the use of magic in the poem. The novel follows the young Makina in her quest to find and bring home her brother from what she imagines to be a mystical far away land. While the novel focuses on the challenges of immigration, the underlying meaning is much more complex. In Yuri Herrera's Signs Preceding the End of the World, the common misconception that women cannot be the strong character in the novel is challenged. He rounded up everyone in the village and attempted to prove how the cell phone works and how Makina will be out of a job shortly due to this great new invention. When the cellphones fail to work, Makina responds "Maybe you should have bought a few cell towers too?" (Herrera 45). This is a big moment in the novel as it shows how Makina has the intelligence to stand up for herself with just a simple statement. In his critique Long mentions a specific quote from the text which is, "You are the door, not the one who walks through it" (Herrera 18). To this quote he states: "Makina's search for her brother obliges her to violate this rule, but it is only when she dares to walk through a number of doors, literal and figurative, that she reaches a definitive and enigmatic encounter with herself." (Long). I agree with this statement, as Makina's journey is more about discovering herself than saving her brother. Throughout the novel a change is noticed in Makina as she breaks her rules. She becomes more independent and her intelligence is shown through the breaking of these rules. By breaking these rules, it justifies every battle she has fought to become who she is. This such loyalty is shared with the acclaimed literary hero Beowulf, who ultimately offers his life in a fierce battle with the dragon for his people. The manner in which Gawain then faces the trials set forth by the Green Knight also demonstrates the strict moral code of sir Gawain; that of the chivalrous knight. His dedication to his code of chivalry is no more evident than in his encounters with the lady of Bertilak's castle; while she incessantly makes advances toward Gawain in his bedchamber, he summons his willpower each time to maintain his code of chivalry and refuse her while remaining courteous. Blekner asserts the moral struggle that Gawain faces in this scene, stating that "We are always aware that the real threat is not so much the considerable sexual attractiveness of the lady's flesh as the young hero's fear of not living up to his worldy reputation for cortaysye" (Blekner 367). Bravery is another characteristic of an archetypal hero. Upon safely reaching Denmark, the great warrior, along with his men, devised a plan to trap and kill the monster. Beowulf and Grendel came face to face in a good versus evil struggle. Heroes often face a struggle of some sort (mental or physical). Beowulf was very, very strong as heroes are. Oroonoko is often seen as the heroic figure of the story because he fits the ideals of European literary heroes. As the so–called "hero," readers expect Oroonoko to be able to conquer any "villain," like Byam and live happily ever after. Yet, he fails to do so. Thus, the hero is unable to go through with his desire for revenge. As a reader, we are confused. Why does Oroonoko lack the power as a "hero" to complete his revenge? Those three words damage Oroonoko's heroic reputation. This important clause "bating his colour" has yet to receive much attention from many readers. The rules of syntax create a conflict when reading the sentence. If the phrase was taken out of the sentence, it would still be complete. At first glance, "bating his colour" could be easily overlooked because commas offset this phrase (15). Behn seems to use commas to stress this phrase rather than to offset it. It shifts the subject of the sentence, emphasizing that Oroonoko is, in fact, not perfect at all. This creates a conflict in the experience of reading this sentence. It also conflicts with the other descriptions of Oroonoko. Behn builds Oroonoko to be this amazing and beautiful hero, but she also finds every chance to tear him down and point out his inadequacies because of the color of his skin. This description proves that, according to Behn, no matter how perfect Oroonoko is, a fatal flaw is the color of his skin. • 97. The Witches As A Literary Hero In Shakespeare's Macbeth The Witches are often seen to be of great importance in Shakespeare's Macbeth; not only are they the first characters to speak, but their prophecies lay the foundation for Macbeth's ultimate spiral into madness. However, their prominence does not necessarily entitle them to be labelled the 'heroines of the piece' that Eagleton describes. In order to evaluate Eagleton's classification of the Witches, we must underpin the true conventions of a literary hero, both to an Elizabethan and contemporary audience. To begin our discussion of heroism, we must consider its literary origin, used by Agamemnon in Book II of Homer's Iliad to address those who fought in the Trojan War as 'Friends, Grecian Heroes, Ministers of Mars'. Here, we find the birth of the original epic hero: a courageous, grand and noble character, admired for their adventurous quests and achievements. When juxtaposing the Witches with this epic definition of the hero, it appears that they are the direct antithesis. Beowulf shows his loyalty when Hrothgar welcomes him, saying, "Beowulf, you've come to us in friendship, and because of the reception your father found at court" (457–462). Beowulf states, "I had a fixed purpose when I put to sea. As I sat in the boat with my band of men, I meant to perform to the uttermost what your people wanted or perish in the attempt, in the fiend's clutches. And I shall fulfill that purpose, prove myself with a proud deed or meet my death here in the mead–hall" (632–638). Beowulf affirms that his loyalty lies with the king and the people, and that he would sacrifice his life for them. Lastly, Beowulf makes it known that his loyalty will remain with the Danes, and that he will be ready to fight whenever they need him. Hrothgar praises Beowulf, ". . . This past month, in English and Civics, students have researched and have explored the meaning of heroism using the 8th grade themes of Order and Chaos. Specifically in English, students have examined both literary and real–life heroes which have either worked in areas of chaos or in order. In English, students read novels written about heroes in areas of chaos and order. Personally I have learned the nature of heroism through chaos and order by reading the book, The Outsiders. Ponyboy, the main character, has acted as a hero in a time of chaos when he saved the children from a church on fire. Ponyboy risked his own life to save those kids, which was an act ... • 113. Characteristics Of Characters In Gilphash In The Epic Of... As we read countless literary works throughout our literary careers, we become aware that certain styles of characters reoccur throughout literature. These "similar" characters do not reappear in many works because an author chose to copy another author's character; rather, these similar–like characters continue to appear in different literary works, because an author is intentionally making its character follow a specific archetype. An archetype is a character that establishes certain characteristics that become associated with that specific style of character. There are many popular archetypes, like the "Underdog", "Star–Crossed Lovers", or the "Hero". For a hero to follow the "Heroic" archetype, the hero must possess something or a position that places him above the common people, have a strong friendship with their companion, and experience a profound revelation; Gilgamesh in The Epic of Gilgamesh perfectly embodies these characteristics. A common characteristic that heroes across many literary works share is their possession of an object, position, or ability that deems them superior to the common people. The many authors of The Epic of Gilgamesh bestowed various attributes onto the character Gilgamesh to emphasize his heroicness. Gilgamesh was born to be biologically superior to those he would rule. He is described to have been given, "a perfect body. Shamash endowed him with beauty. Adad endowed him with courage, the great gods made his beauty, surpassing all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 117. Gilgamesh And Oedipus Essay Tiffanie Moore Professor Grimes Literary Studies 01 October, 2017 Gilgamesh vs. Oedipus No two men are alike in anyway, same goes for heroes and tragic heroes. A hero is someone who has given their life to be something bigger than oneself. A hero is someone who is brave, courageous and someone you look up to. Aristotle referred to a tragic hero as, "someone who makes their own judgement error that inevitably leads to their own destruction". Gilgamesh and Oedipus were some of the biggest heroes in our literary studies. Gilgamesh and Oedipus lived their lives fearlessly and I believe that is what made them such great heros. By reading Oedipus Rex, it is certain that his own judgments led to his destruction. His greatest flaw was making mistakes, he was once considered a phenomenal hero, yet his bad decisions led to his tragic heroism. Oedipus crosses path with Laius, the king, which led to a fight and the slaying of Laius. Oedipus then defeats the Sphinx by solving a mystery riddle to become king. He then married the widow, Jocasta, not knowing it was his mother. Now being the King of Thebes, Oedipus, sent Creon to see why the plague had started. Upon his return, Creon explained to Oedipus that the plague had started by the murder of the former king, Laius. Creon stated, once the killer of Laius was found, the plague would be lifted. Teiresias suspected that Oedipus was the killer of Laius, this infuriates Oedipus. Oedipus' wife, Jocasta, confirms there is no way Oedipus could have killed the former king. Jocasta tells Oedipus that Laius was killed at a three–way crossroad, right before Oedipus arrived at Thebes. Oedipus then realized he was the one who had killed the former king, Laius. Finding out the truth of her husband, Jocasta, then hangs herself. Oedipus, mourning the loss of his wife and realizing the truth about himself, he gouges his eye out and immediately demands punishment from Creon, who is now the king. Although war can be seen as honorable and heroic, the battles can leave a soldier wounded psychologically. • 125. Beowulf Is An Epic Hero Theme Epic Hero Essay What makes tone something so important in an epic hero story? One example of this type of hero, in particular, can be seen in Nevill Coghill's excerpt translation of Geoffrey Chaucer's satire The Prologue, is a literary piece of work that is used to scrutinize certain members of society. Chaucer even depicts certain character's to represent the groups in society and how they could change. Name a work of fiction that does not revolve around or at least include a hero of some caliber. Ask yourself what stories could we still enjoy without the greatest characters of literary history. We as people have shown time and time again that nothing can beat our love for heroes, they have a special place in our hearts rivaled only by their associated villains. Without them most stories just wouldn't be the same. The Hobbit is a perfect example of the importance of heroism in literary fiction. Bilbo Baggins is by no means a typical hero. Heroes are usually portrayed as being tall and handsome. Bilbo is a halfling, therefore he is short and portly with hairy feet. Heroes are warriors and their courage is apparent. Bilbo lives in a cozy hole in the ground spending his time blowing smoke rings and eating more than three meals a day. Heroes are also normally viewed as fearless and good at fighting, while Bilbo has never used a weapon before the events of The Hobbit, and is afraid of the very idea of leaving his home of Hobbiton. Some individuals may see a hero as someone who is known for their good deeds and remarkable super powers like the ones that are shown today in films. Even though, this can be true to a certain extent, these qualities are not the only ones that are used to compose the ideal hero. "As society has progressed throughout the years, the characterization of who a hero is has also transformed in terms of the protagonist itself." (Heroes). During the 1600s, the protagonist was not seen as the hero of the play or poems like shown in William Shakespeare's tragedy, "Othello" and the epic poem "Paradise Lost" written by John Milton."
