1. Evaluation Q6
What have you learned about technologies
from the process of constructing this product?
2. Cameras
• I used an DSLR camera to take the images for all of my publications which were a
lot higher quality than using a regular digital camera. The images needed to be of a
high resolution so they retained most of their quality when resized. When using
the camera I had to make sure the shots looked professional and were in focus.
Once I had taken the images I could then edit them and insert them into my
documents, the program I used to edit my photos was Photoshop which is an
industry standard photo manipulation application. I had to also take into account
the context of where the image will be displayed to help be decide the best way to
shoot, for example, in the cover image I had to make sure that there was enough
space above the band for the masthead to sit comfortably.
3. Adobe Photoshop
• Photoshop was used to manipulate all of my graphics for all of my publications. It
was also used to design my cover and some parts of the other publications
although they were mainly created in quark. I used a range of tools, some of which
I had never used before such as the quick mask tool, once I knew how to use this
then I could use it to edit my images. An example when I used it was to blur the
backgrounds to all of my images, I did this to simulate a shallow depth of field
which also draws all the attention to the subject of the image. I already had a lot of
knowledge about Photoshop so I tried to use it to its full potential with all of its
tools.
4. Quark
• Quark was used for two of our magazine publications, the contents page and the
double page spread. I was familiar with the layout of the program and how it
worked as we had used it for a preliminary task before our main coursework
began, but didn’t fully recognise all of the features it was capable of. I found it to
be useful in the way it lays out the publication such as the columns and pages you
can set up. I learnt how to use a drop cap on my article which is a convention to
magazine articles, although it was a little confusing to set up at first. I also learned
that my font size needed to be smaller than what I initially set it to be as when I
printed it, it was still to big at 12px, I dropped it down to 9px which prints better.
5. Prezi
• I used Prezi once for an evaluation question. It’s a similar tool to PowerPoint but had a
unique feature for showing each section of the PowerPoint. It was easy to grasp the concept
of how to create the presentation with all the effects and make an appealing presentation to
watch. It is useful to create presentations online without having any presentation software
installed on your computer and can be shared through a number of different social networks
or embedded.
6. Blogger
• Blogger was the way in which all of our coursework was collected and displayed. Each time
we finished a certain task we would blog it as a new post. I have been familiar with other
blogging platforms such as Word press but never used blogger before. I found the interface
to be slightly confusing at first but I only needed to know how to create/edit posts. We found
some of the features didn’t work on some modern browsers like Firefox as we encountered
some problems when trying to upload any images directly to the blog. Creating new posts is
easy with their rich text editor so you can format the text and see the result instantly before
you publish your post, there is also the html view tab which you can see the raw html of that
post, this is also where you would paste the code for embedding certain things.
