(Note) A trial follows the following steps.
1. The Applicant / Accuser’s barrister makes an opening statement.
2. The Respondent / Defendant’s barrister makes an opening statement.
3. Witnesses are called and evidence is provided.
4. The jury makes their decision and the judge decides a sentence.
(Discuss) All evidence should be seen by both sides before a trial starts.

1. Conduct a class trial for a green card.
2. Examine all the roles in a courtroom.

2. Your going to do a short written exercise as we prepare the
trial. This will mainly be ‘what do you expect to happen’.
We’ll conduct the trial, giving the jury at least five minutes to
make a decision at the end.
Your homework will be reading a infogragh or brochure in
your activity book and answering questions.

3. Applicant and Respondent: Why do you deserve green cards.
Legal team: Write an opening statement introducing your client
and briefly explain why they deserve a green card.
Witnesses: Why do each of them deserve green cards.
Jury: Who deserves the green card more in your opinion?
Clerk – note the following – ‘Repeat after me. I swear that the
evidence that I shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth and
nothing but the truth, so help me God.’
(You will be in charge of managing the court as described on the next slide)
Journalists: Who are you expecting to get the green card and
why?
Write a few lines answering YOUR question.

A. The Applicant goes first with a piece of evidence or a witness,
then the Respondent is given time with the same
evidence/witness afterwards.
B. The Respondent goes second with a piece of evidence or a
witness, then the Applicant is given time with the same
evidence/witness afterwards. (A and B go back and forth)
4. The jury makes their decision and the judge decides a
sentence.
