2. We are going to read page 283 - 285 of the book which
examines all the roles in a courtroom from judge to a victim.
We shall take notes along the way about what they all do.
You’ll work in pairs to answers questions on page 107 of your
activity book.
I would like to assign roles to everyone for next week at the
end of the class, most important of which is the Applicant
and Respondent (or defendant and accuser). These two
students will have the chance to win green cards next week.
Plan for today
3. I will need about fourteen people to read page 283 - 285 of your
main book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
(note) Solicitor: A person you pay for legal assistance.
(note) Barrister: A person who represents you in court.
(note) Judge: A person in charge of a courtroom who makes the
final decision.
(note) Jury: Twelve citizens who decide if a person is innocent or
guilty. The head juror is call the foreman.
(note) Clerk: A person in charge of making things run smoothly
and recording events.
(In next weeks trial, the clerk shall take a couple of jobs)
(Discuss) Examine the picture on page 284. Who is each person?

4. I will need about seven more people to read page 282 of your main
book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
(note) Defendant: a suspected criminal, innocent until proven
guilty and with the right to a legal representative.
(note) An Applicant (to apply) can bring another person to court
over a dispute. The other person is a respondent (to respond)
(note) Prosecutor: Explains how the law.
(note) Witness: provides evidence or knowledge about the case.
(Task) When you are done, start looking at 107 of your activity book
with those beside you. I shall work on handing out roles then.

5. For next week we need the following roles filled,
1. Applicant and Respondent (2): think they deserve green cards. May
be embarrassed by people talking about them.
2. A legal team (4) who will argue for them and gather evidence and
witnesses during the week. They must talk a lot.
3. Witnesses(6 min): Students to talk about the people who deserve
green cards.
4. A jury (12) is chosen by the legal teams, with each side able to veto or
say no to only two people each.
5. Clerk (1) – Someone to assist Judge/Teacher, have them swear on
bibles, stand when I enter, etc.
6. Anyone who is not a witness or jury member will be a reporter.
