The Dark Night Sky Monologue
Crystal orbs met the dark night sky. It was quiet, save for the shuddered breaths surrounding the girl.
She couldn't move a muscle. Even her eyes stayed fixed on one star; the only star that dared to
shine. The more she was forced to listen, the sooner she realized that the sound of the breathing was
coming from her. "You don't get to leave that easily." The familiar voice boomed from sky. A green
fog leaked from the trees, lying beside Bethany. But she still could not move. Her mouth gaped
opened and the fog flowed into her throat. She could feel it passing through her body until her vision
was clouded with it. From the fog came a dark figure. "You owe us everything. Your life is in our
hands. And it's time to collect." As the hand wrapped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If anyone needed to know the trouble that lay waiting, it was the leader of the pack. She knocked
until she finally answered the door. "Alright. Miss Queen. Your majesty. We got a slight issue. I

bayou. Now that either means they're lookin' for me or they're lookin' for you. And we don't want
either one. So whatever your plan will be, I'd suggest we implement it fast before we're as useless as

Whatever the wolves decided she'd have to honor it. Even if it meant staying behind to

A Short Story : A Story?
A small floating island, all around a blue night sky is illuminated by the moon. The city on top, as
quiet as a mouse. A small person running through one of the many alleyways, he stops, petrified. A
large being concealed by shadows, barely visible. I stopped, assuming the worst, but as it stepped
away from the darkness, I realized it was only my friend, Jonathan. After an exciting session of
angered whispers, I told him the reason I was there. "I was heading down to West Side to talk to
Uncle Isaiah about the Sky Ship."
Two Hours Later
"Who is it? Hello?" Uncle Isaiah said, annoyed by the knock on his door. "It's me!" I said, to which
he responded, "I don't quite recall anyone named me, for the past, well, forever." "Ugh, I mean it's
Sam." After a moment, he responded a loud "How are you?" in a few seconds of consideration, due
to the shock I had received from my friend, I replied "I'm good, though I'm starting to think going
out at night isn't the best of ideas I have ever had." "Maybe you can try again when your older?
None the less, what's the real reason you came here?" I simply replied, "When will I get my Sky
ship?" "In due time Sam, in due time."
Three months later
Christmas, the only time of the year when I am actually happy outside, we get so much snow up
here it is insane; then again, we are on a floating island! As I travelled from my mother's house to
my uncles', I remembered what had happened on this journey 6 years ago, when I was only 10, "Yes
I know, but we can't afford that right now Sam, we are struggling even to keep the house!" "But
when can we get it? I really want one!" "The Sky ship or the cat? Hahaha" "You know I meant the
Sky ship, we already have a cat!" "I told you, in a few years I will have the house paid off and
everything and we can get you one, but why do you even want one of your own? They are so
expensive and you won't be able to use it until your 16." "I'll tell you in a second dad, I just saw 20
dollars fly by I swear!" I said excited "Is this another one of your pranks?" "You just wait and see," I
said running after it, after a few feet I heard a whisper, and then I was knocked out cold...
After I am not sure how long, I woke up with a nasty headache and no clue where

History Of The Donella Party
The party had just started when Donella and Lilith arrived. As Donella floated into the forest she
admired the fanciful decor. There were fireflies trained to hover, providing the party with soft
lighting. There were handmade tables veiled by skillfully woven spider silk. There were flower
petals covering every inch of the ground. And there were fifty fairies playing traditional fairy songs
on instruments made from items around the forest. The forest was ethereal; Donella felt as if she
was in a dream. As the night progressed, Donella socialized with her fellow fairies and helped
herself to the buffet featuring a fish that she, herself, had caught. And as midnight approached the
fairies began to dance in the light on the moon and sing in

Vija Celmins
Matthew Marks Gallery recently opened solo show of Vija Celmins, one of the greatest
contemporary female artists from United States. Celmins is well known for her precise rendered
paintings, carefully copied from photographs and prints. For this exhibition, the artist presents 19
new works after 7 years of silence. There are paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints. The entire
space of the gallery is given to Celmins, since this is her first personal show with Matthew Marks
Gallery.
Works are beautifully organized in two halls of the building, making it very easy for the public to
move around. There is no decorations, just plain white walls. Known for being intimidating and
intrusive at times, white background in case of this exhibition helps to direct viewer attention to
Celmins' works, erasing all possible disturbances between art pieces and person, who's observing
them. Indeed every work exists in its own "space", which allows viewer to have almost personal
connection to each object. Placement of the paintings far away from each other creates unique ...

Night Sky #4 (Fig.2) is a negative image of starry sky, where shiny stars are turned into black

of the galaxy, with golden radiance behind numerous speckles of stars. Again, artist achieved

You were like a cold I didn't realize I had. My nose was a little stuffy and I coughed here and there,
but I brushed it off like it was no big deal, like it wasn't affecting me at all. I told you my exact
feelings every single time we spoke. You, on the other hand, were a closed door, a locked door.
Knocking on that door, even banging, you would never let me in. You were much like the moon,
hiding the most beautiful parts of you away from the rest of the world. But sometimes you'd shine
brighter than any other matter in the night sky. Looking into your eyes was like staring crystal clear
ocean. I could see my reflection in them. But when you grew tired, when your heart turned cold, it's
like the waves washed them away, leaving them gray.

The Night Sky
It was a dark and stormy night, the wind blows as the ghostly moonlight filled the darkness. George
the highwayman made his way toward Bess the innkeeper's daughter. She was gazing out the
window when the two of their eyes met. Hers, black as the night sky, and a dark red love knot
placed on her hair. A red dress made of the fabric silk. Her hair was a dark brown, but could have
been mistaken as black. Her outfit fit her personality as much as it did the highwayman. I hope he
loves poetry. Bess thought. He rides toward her on his horse dressed in a fancy cloak colored velvet,
with a curled white wig and doe brown skin, lace wrapped around his chin, and the most beautiful
brown eyes anyone had ever seen. His boots sitting as high ... Show more content on

Suddenly, George pulled out his pistol and shot at the redcoat closest to him.
"How does a silver bullet feel in your gut." George squaked. Then the second redcoat came up and
cried,
"I wouldn't know, you didn't hit me!" The two remaining redcoats chased after George for as long as
they could.
"Yip yip," George tells his horse with a calm voice, "try and catch me, and I will give up my fortune
to you." The redcoats continue to play in George's game. The redcoats sped up and suddenly called,
"Highwayman, slow down or force will be a factor of this chase." George wittingly says,
"Ok, if we have to!" George shoots the third redcoat. Now only one redcoat remains. The last red
coat shrills at George, " Alas, it is the end for you." The redcoat pulls out his weapon and shoots for
the highwayman's head. "You missed," George implies angrily, "and you shot my hat."
George whips out his sword and turns around toward the red coat. He takes his head with one clean
swipe of the blade. By the time George finds the perfect gift, it is already nighttime. He has no idea
the other redcoats are tracking down Bess while he is still riding back to her. They raid the inn and
drink all the ale. The redcoats quickly make their way to Bess's room, and tie her hands with a rope
on the foot of her bed. I've got to find a way to warn the highwayman. Bess inferred.

The True Value Of Life
"Worldly fame, power, and money are all great values in life; but the greatest value of all, in life, is
love." Christian muse's to himself as he walks down the stairway of the San Francisco airport
terminal. He makes his way to the taxi ward for a ride to the Sunshine cruise liner. It will be en route
from San Francisco, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. It will pass through vast seas, emerald tropical
islands, and reflect the beauty of the ocean life. For all this Christian will walk down its planks, as
liken unto a rich man. In reality, he is a low class, paycheck to paycheck, average built, tall, just
maybe over six foot, dark–haired, ordinary, country guy. He would have likely never done this, had
it not been for her. Rose is the tall, slim, beautiful Thai girl that came into his life and finally, can
take her hand, as they walk their way to this Pacific honeymoon. Unknown to Christian and Rose,
this voyage is will bring them the adventure, Golden Ties, and love of their lifetime.
Alas, Christian and Rose arrive at the cruise just before it launches. They climb on board and find
their palace cabin. Although hardly recognizable, just then, they heard the ship plunge into the
waves of the vast ocean. Overhead, an observant seagull flies. Then it is gone; into the light, misty
fog. Later, the seagull returns, with it, the sun, as it sets in the deep horizon of the west. The water
sparkles like prisms. However, above the water, is a cruise. Then, seeing that, on its deck,

Night Sky Constellation Research
Constellations are pictures or shapes that ancient people discovered in the night sky. Some of the
most popular constellations are the twelve Zodiac signs. Another famous constellation is Orion, or
'The Hunter'. I chose to write about Orion because personally I love the story of how his
constellation came to be. He is one of the main constellations I always notice in the night sky. The
story of Orion is that he was a talented hunter. He was determined to rid the Earth of all wild
animals. However this angered Gaia, the Earth goddess. She released a scorpion on Orion. Soon
Orion discovered he could not defeat the scorpion and jumped into the sea. Later on Apollo noticed
a black spot in the sea and dared Artemis that she could not hit it with her bow and arrow. She stood
up to the challenge and hit the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once when Orion was young he met a girl. Almost immediately he felt like he was in love. He
promised the young girl he would always watch over her with his strong hunting skills and the help
of his dogs Canis Major and Canis Minor. Many months had passed as the affection between the two
prospered. One day the young girl's father discovered the two in an orchard declaring love for one
another. He became enraged and banned the young lovers from continuing this affair. However they
still managed. The young girl's mother supported the two and helped them betray the rulings of her
father. The mother took the two to a nearby Province and committed them into marriage. The
following day the mother explained all of this to the father, hoping to turn around his previous
judgement. Without word the father packed the young girl's trunk and shipped her far away from
Orion and his love for her. Both lovers were devastated by this new development. They attempted to
keep in touch until all connection was cut off between the two but the young girl's

Native Myths of How the Stars Came to Be
Throughout generations stories were passed down about how things could've been created like the
earth, mankind, and even the stars. Every culture and religion has their own myth of how things
came to be. The Hindu's, Native American's, and the Chinese all made up stories about how the stars
were created.
The Native Americans believed that in the story "Coyote Places The Stars", a coyote wonders why
his wolf brothers look up at the sky every night. Well when the wolves finally tell the coyote that
there are animals up in the sky. The coyote shot arrows up into the sky to create a ladder to be able
to climb to the stars and visit the animals above. As they climbed to the stars they found two bears
roaming the skies. The coyote decided to leave the wolves with the bears and as he climbed down
the arrows he took one out at a time so the wolves couldn't leave. As the coyote looks up at the night
sky, he is pleased on how the arrangement of the stars look so he begins to arrange other stars as
well, pleased with work he told Meadowlark to tell people who looks at the stars that it was the
coyote who has placed the stars, now Meadowlark tells everyone about coyote and the stars ("Native
American Legends"). The Hindu's believed that a coyote, a Navajo god, was created by the
mischievous behavior of the gods. When the world was created the Holy People gathered around
and began placing stars in the sky, angered by the slow process of the star placings, the coyote
placed a red star

and the Angelic Order. Is there peace and rest? Or is there just more war and bloodshed? Does chaos
control the rest of the galaxy like it does on Earth? Was there a time where men ever left this place
and explored the stars? My thoughts are interrupted as footsteps echo across the roof. I jump to my
feet, ready to fight. Instead, I am greeted with a short laugh. "Relax, Cry, it's only me," Thorn's voice

Analysis Of Van Gogh 's Starry Night Sky
One of Vincent Van Gogh's most world renowned paintings is his landscape oil painting Starry
Night. The painting displays a small town underneath an unusual yet still extremely beautiful night
sky. In this night sky, Van Gogh utilizes an array of colors that blend well together in order to
enhance the sky as a whole. The town is clearly a small one due to the amount of buildings that are
present in the painting itself. In this small town most of the buildings have lights on which
symbolize life in a community. Another visual in Starry Night is the mountain like figures that
appear in the background of the illustrious painting. Several things contribute to the beauty of Van
Gogh's painting which are the painting's function, context, style, and design. Van Gogh's utilization
of these elements help bring further emphasis to his work in Starry Night.
Starry Night was painted by Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch painter who was well known for being an
impressionist during his time. Van Gogh was born March 30, 1853 in the Netherlands and died at
the age of 37 in France where he actually painted Starry Night while in the Hospital. Starry Night is
located in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (Van Gogh Gallery). The main point of
emphasis in Starry Night is the relationships between a community, nature, and religion. Van Gogh
ties these three points of emphasis together in an exceptional manner in Starry Night. He compares
the community and nature by placing the town near an alluring

Analysis : The Night Sky Planisphere
Summary: For the first part of the lab we measured the right ascension and declination of certain
stars and constellations; we used the star chart like a graph with measurements of time and angles.
Another part of the lab we used a star and planet locator also known as a planisphere to determine
the time and date certain stars and constellations are visible, set, or rise at. Using the planisphere
was quite easy to determine stars and how they correlate to time because it 's pleasant to visualize
and address smaller stars that are not so apparent in the sky to the naked eye.
Questions:
What do your planispheres represent?
Our planispheres are diagrams that depict the date and time a constellation or star will be visible by
it passing through the meridian while facing North to Polaris. The night sky planisphere also depicts
what stars can be seen during any time of the year in specific direction in the sky.
Is it possible to predict a celestial event using planispheres?
Planispheres can only locate stars according to time and position but cannot predict celestial events
like eclipses or asteroids.
What is right ascension?
Right ascension is a measurement of hours and minutes in eastward motion on the celestial equator.
What is declination?
Declination is the opposite of ascension, meaning it 's a horizontal measurement. It is the
measurement of how far the sun is from the celestial equator in degrees from 0 to 90.

Personal Narrative: Changing The Night Sky

my mind into read as much as I could about space. Speaking of the nighttime sky, astronomers are
predicting the sky could look a little different in 2022. Calvin College professor Larry Molnar and
his students along with colleagues from Apache Point Observatory (Karen Kinemuchi) and the
University of Wyoming (Henry Kobulnicky) are predicting a change to the night sky that will be
visible to the naked eye. At 10:15 a.m. CST on Friday, January 6, a press briefing

One of the most familiar constellations in the night sky aside from the Big and Little Dipper is
Orion, the Hunter. Made identifiable by the three bright stars that make up "Orion's Belt", Orion is
easily recognized throughout the world due to the convenient position upon the celestial equator,
allowing the constellation to be seen from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. I chose this
constellation as my favorite because it was, in fact, one of the first myths that I had ever learned, and
also because it was the easiest constellation that I was able to find from my Constellation Atlas as a
child. The constellation of Orion is comprised of mostly of blue stars: young, hot burning, giant
stars that range from 243 light years to 1,359 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though Apollo was a hot headed god, as he was the god of the sun, he was also cunning. When he
knew that Orion was swimming far in the ocean away from Artemis, Apollo came to his sister and
challenged her to an archery contest. Artemis was incredibly proud of her abilities as an archer, and
so, eagerly accepted the challenge as a way of besting her brother. Artemis welcomed Apollo to
point to anything, and she would hit the target easily. Apollo pointed to a small dark speck on the
horizon, which he knew was Orion's head, and invited his sister shoot, which she did. Of course,
Artemis hit the speck true. It was only when Apollo had already left and Orion's body had washed
ashore that Artemis realized the cruel trick that her brother had pulled. In her grief, the Virgin
Goddess turned her love into stardust, and gave him a honored place in the heavens.
This is my myth of Orion. From the day that he had been born, Orion was a sickly, crippled child,
with little chance of survival. One day, when the boy was six years of age, his father took Orion to
the temple to meet the Oracle. The father prayed

called the "Village Idiots" but later changed there name to Nickelback in honor of their bassist Mike
Kroeger who used to work at Starbucks and frequently said "here's your nickel back" it may be an
odd name but was very catchy because in 1996 They made their first sorta album, it was a seven

songs from bands like Led Zeppelin and Metallica, they were big fans of rock. Which was what
inspired the band to go into that genera. Nickelback signed with their first record company,

Reflection Essay : ' Profound Moment '
Carlos Benavides
Professor Finn
ENGW 1111
22 September 2016 Profound Moment It is dark. My eyes try to adjust to the sudden loss of light,
my pupils dilating to their maximum size. I can't see. Frantically I reach forward into the emptiness
around me. I'm searching for something; what it is, is something I don't even know. Is it familiarity?
Is it light? Is it another just as lost as me? I ... am alone. In my panic I nearly miss it, something that
was always there. Above me, a speck of light blinks into existence. It shines brightly against the
sheet of black it is set upon. But its solitary life lasts for only a moment as the black sheet is poked
with billions of holes. Before my eyes lies a magnificent show of light. I continue to stare as my
once empty world is filled with pinpricks of brilliance. Suddenly a streak dances across the sky, a
line cutting through night. As quickly as it appears, it vanishes, leaving only its faint impression.
The sky is beautiful. It is a whisper... falling effortlessly from my mouth. And of course that
statement holds true. To explain my passion for space, you have to revert to childlike wonder. It isn't
just a love for the stars above, but also an endless awe for them. I am entranced by its many
mysteries, by the lack of knowledge we have for it. I have never thought of a specific profound
moment that I have had from my passion with astronomy and astrophysics because, frankly, it has
always been profound. Past the ceiling of my room,

The Night Sky
I woke up desperately taking in a gasp of air. My body rose and fell uncontrollably as I laid on the
cold earth taking in the fact that I was still alive. At first I couldn't tell if I was blind or not with the
darkness lingering in front of me. That was until I rolled myself over and was introduced to the
milky colored moon that peaked behind the clouds. They quickly made their way across the barren
land to reveal the deep purple haze that was the night sky. The night looked young as the moon
shined bright behind the branches of the dead trees. Each of the trees stretched their branches out to
reach for the sky. You could tell that they wanted to escape from this place as their branches reached
for the stars. However, the malnourished earth refused to let them go as the ground locked their
exposed roots to the soil beneath them. Some had many of their hopes of leaving forever, lost, as
they were flat on the dirt soil. With the coldness of the earth under my bare back I was in awe as I
was on the ground, naked, feeling like time had stopped. For the first time I felt separated from my
body. Just my mind and my spirit were present, filled with questions that never led to answers: How
did I get here? Where was home? Who even am I? How do I "know" things, but at the same time
don't? Why can't I remember what happened before this? My questions were never answered, for I

Personal Narrative Fiction
The party had been deemed, by high school standards, a success. In the back yard, drunken punches
were being thrown erratically, goon bags hung from the washing line and girls in tiny dresses hung
helplessly to trees as they emptied their stomachs violently onto the ground. Inside, Skrillex blasted
obnoxiously from the speakers, making it feel as if the whole of Blackmans Bay shook with the
bass. The combination of the smoke machine and rainbow fairy lights created a luminous mist that
smelled of alcohol and teenage sweat. Throughout the house hormones raged like demons
untethered; a girl sat on the kitchen bench, her legs wrapped promiscuously around the waist of a
boy whose hands snaked nervously up her shirt even as she pulled him closer ... Show more content

It felt like, probably had been, years since he'd asked her about her day. Even though, on this
particular day, she was glad for her father's obliviousness, his disinterest in her wellbeing felt as if a
bee had stung her heart and the swelling was slowly suffocating her. Ignoring the breathlessness, she
dug in her washing basket for a jumper. Gracelessly she donned the cleanest she could find and
flicking the hood up, shuffled gawkily out to the kitchen. Between her bedroom and the kitchen, her
father's desk sat nestled in an alcove in the hallway. The clutter of paperwork, sticky notes and pens
seemed to surround and worship the Mac that towered ominously above. Her father's eyes never
once left the screen, hands tapping and clicking endlessly, almost as if he was orchestrating some
sick religion of stationery. He did not acknowledge her squeezing behind his chair get past, nor the
second time on return to her room.

Dark Sky Night Observation
In this Observation Report, I will be discussing the technology and sights I encountered throughout
both the Dark Sky Night, and the 1st Quarter Night. Explanations of both the astronomical
instruments as well as visuals will be provided. All of the information and opportunities were
provided to me by Austin Peay State University, with instruction by Dr. Buckner. The First Quarter
Night was focused more on the technology and instruments used to view and document targeted
subjects in space, whereas the Dark Sky Night focused more on the viewings. Throughout this
observation I will reintroduce the telescopes, aids, and celestial objects I examined through Dr.
Buckner's instruction on observation nights. I attended Austin Peay's 1st Quarter Night on February
15, 2016. On this day, we had approximately four telescopes set up with three I managed to catalog,
and were introduced to a variety of extension and aid devices. Among the telescopes I documented I
was able to record ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among these are star maps, planispheres, filters, and various photographical devices. Starting with
planispheres and star maps, these are used to aid in manual telescope operation. The last telescope I
discussed was a reflector telescope that used an Alt–Az mount, meaning locating celestial objects
relies fully on the operator's ability to use maps and star guides so get a lay of the land, or sky for
this matter. Looking at the sky isn't near as easy as it may sound. Much like how the Earth is

Summary Of ' The Night Sky '
It was late, the moon already high in the night sky, all except for George lie sleeping softly in the
bunkhouse. An unfinished game of solitaire, sprawled out across the barn floor. The barn was lit
only by a single red candle on an overturned crate. Next to the candle was an opened red pack of
cigarettes and a dirty brass lighter. Fresh hay was scattered around the cold floor, a job unfinished.
In the corner of the shadowed barn, a spider clung to its web as it slowly devoured a helpless fly.
Curley's wife lay still, untouched, the sight almost had a natural feeling about it, as though this was
all her life was ever to amount to, she lay dead amongst the hay; it was as thought the others had
forgotten about her and merely continued with their dreary lives. A rusted shovel leaned against the
wall, next to a freshly dug mound of earth, covering Candy's lifeless dog. Lastly, spread across the
floor, was a ragged length of cold consuming rope, with a noose tied in one frayed end. George
crouched before the rope, hunched over almost questioningly, as though judging whether or not this
was his best way out of the situation. He was dirty and unshaven; he had yet not bothered to change
from his gloomy, threadbare work attire. His hair was greasy and unkempt, his facial hair was long
and neglected and his face looked like it had not seen water for many days. His eyes seemed to have
sunken in to his head, for they were carrying heavy bags, he resembled a man who had not slept for

If you look outside your window and stare up at the night sky, you will see multiple little, tiny,
bright dots. At first, the bright dots will look like nothing. The stars will just be random little dots,
but if you look a little more you will start to see that these stars connect in different ways. If you
look a little closer you can start to see figures and patterns. These pictures in the night sky are called
constellations. For many years in history, people, scientists, and astronomers have observed and
studied the constellations. They would see a figure among the stars and come up with a name and
story as to why they are up in the sky. They would name the constellations according to what was
important to them. For example, the Chinese would

You awaken the last dying breaths of a sunset strewn across a bed of fallen twigs and leaves, no idea
where you are or what you're doing there. After a struggle, you lift your tired body up and brush the
debris away, your clothes doing little keep the cold from crawling in. Even though the trees have
been stripped of their leaves, now that the sun has left you and the clouds have rolled in you are lost
in a world with no light. As you begin to walk in search of help gentle specks of white begin to drift
to the ground around you. So quiet and calm, you wonder if they are falling stars from the night sky.

Swift-Bottle Comet Research Paper
New York City's world infamous noisiness, brutish pace, with no trace of empathy or personal space
let up last night to the magic of something bigger than the leviathan city itself. Viewed from
Brooklyn, Staten Island or Jersey, the fact is that only about one percent of the cosmic spectacle an
amateur astronomer could have ogled in the days of Galileo.
This penchant for stolid skies broke last night, was even transgressed, as even the atrocious level of
light pollution could not disguise the explosions in the sky from the Perseid meteor shower, whose
origin is the Swift–Tuttle Comet.
We have been given this neat display as a result of the Swift–Tuttle comet's unusually close
encounter with the third planet of the solar system, causing it (this third planet) to pass through a
thin, cylindrical–shaped trail of rocky particles such that many burn up in the Earth's atmosphere,
creating a dazzling display of cosmic destruction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some favored places in the city to view the meteor shower include Inwood Hill Park, Central Park,
the High Line, and Marine Park in Brooklyn.
However, yesterday's eve was special enough to overrule the limits of light pollution. In lesser–
known stargazing sights, such as Battery Park, or the rooftops of Dumbo, several fireballs were seen
between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 2:00 a. m.
It is true that this year's meteor shower's peak has passed, it's in the past and it's not coming back,
but that doesn't mean that you can't still catch the tail end of the show. Following is a list of events
from which to view what's left of the meteor shower, as assembled by the New York

Light Pollution, And The Effects Of Light Pollution
A new study illustrates that light pollution has increased to such an extent all over the world that
both human beings and other animals are negatively affected by it. The study marks the first
observation of satellite images to ever be designed specifically for detecting particular types of
artificial lights. A petition was also started recently via Change.Org outlining three main ways light
pollution impinges upon the health of humans and birds while also brightening the night sky. "For
human health, the biggest issue is it messes with circadian rhythms," according to Laura Stepney,
who started the petition. "You can get black out curtains but you shouldn't have to. The city should
be considering that from the beginning with the design, instead of people having to react and protect
themselves." She cites a study that found residents of metropolitan areas lose considerable hours of
sleep due to going to bed later and waking earlier. A more recent study published in the peer–
reviewed journal, Science Advances, used satellite data to illustrate that Earth's night is gradually
brightening. It also showed that artificially lit outdoor surfaces have become 2.2 percent more
common on average each year since 2012. Pundits argue that this is particularly problematic because
these nighttime lights not only disrupt circadian rhythms but also increase risks of depression,
diabetes and cancer. In the course of migrating, both sea turtles and birds are disoriented by
nighttime lights, and insects are attracted to them, which often leads them to their death. These lights
are predominately LED lights, which have become increasingly popular over the course of the last
couple decades primarily based on the marketing promise of energy conservation. LED lights are
not inherently problematic in and of themselves according to German Research Center for
Geosciences physicist Chris Kyba. He says the problem is the sheer number of lights that people are
collectively installing. "We'll light something that we didn't light before, like a bicycle path through
a park or a section of highway leading outside of town in the past wasn't lit," Kyba explains as an
example. "And so all of those new uses of light offset, to some extent,

Analysis Of The Book ' The Night Sky '
About The Author
This voice from sound waves would go beyond ear buds because you readers would comprehend the
momentum from turned pages. He turned in ways which weighed his thoughts to unbearable weight.
Closed eyes would only keep him dreaming. For years he was scared to wake up, it must have been
the things he was seeing. Have you ever want so bad it hurts, so you don't try to attempt. Looking at
the night sky it's dark, inside him was like it. He never believed in himself so he was taken for
granted. Only thing he could see was clouds interfering with all of his visions. Like foggy days,
foggy thoughts clouded his mind. He couldn't see his next step because he was falling behind. Life
is hard with no help he found love in the streets. He resented that lifestyle because he was lost and
defeated. He asked for change, he prayed for the same, he begged it to start. Deciphering what to do
panicking he didn't see no way out. He really lost all hope with his life because the things he went
through. He was raised up on no sympathy, in his lifetime he saw that truth. Till this one day, some
say "he would never make it,"", "he's doing nothing," ", they predicted he was going to stay down
but they didn't know, he learned from situations and it wasn 't easyso he had to leave, now he's
standing tall growing roots from a planted seed.

Personification In Sylvia Plath's Stars Over The Dordogne
In the poem "Stars Over the Dordogne" by Sylvia Plath, the author illustrates a message by using
disparate techniques. It slowly develops as the readers go throughout the piece, however all the
techniques are effective and leave an impact on the audience. Moreover, it causes the audience to
have various views throughout the piece. The sense in this poem is about how everyone has a
divergent outlook on the world. The author shows this, by using imagery, personification, and shift
to develop a message. Plath first uses imagery to develop her point and to create an image in the
reader's mind. For instance, the author says, "Stars are dropping thick as stones" (Plath 1). With this
phrase the author develops the image of stars slowly disappearing in the night sky, it makes us have
a peculiar image of stars as if they drop here and there, instead of them hanging in the night sky
24/7. The author also causes us to have an image of how everything outside is quiet and calm, she
demonstrates this by using the phrase, "Than the dark of the sky because it is quite starless. The
woods are a well. The stars drop silently." (Plath 3–4). This phrase develops an image of how the
woods are never ending, how the stars dipping away in the night sky, and makes the audience have a
new perspective of how nature is never ending. In addition, the author creates an image of how the
stars hang only by a thread in the night sky, the author demonstrates this by saying, "Hanging shyly

Science And Innovation : Tennessee Kentucky Is Ranked A...
"Our species needs, and deserves, a citizenry with minds wide awake and a basic understanding of
how the world works."–Carl Sagan, Cosmos. What every community should strive for, is to be as
close to the front lines of science and innovation as possible. Louisville, Kentucky is ranked a mere
58 out of 100 cities nearby in number of STEM programs and jobs available (Science, Technologies,
Engineering, and Mathematics). STEM fields are responsible for progression in any given industry.
Louisville has such dense light pollution all we can see at night is a few scattered stars and a glow,
the dim glow blanketing the heavens diminishes the curiosity of scientific progress and achieving
the impossible. In the age of the internet, we can easily start a trend that progresses STEM funding
by having locals cut back on artificial lighting for the sake of improving our view of the cosmos.
Spreading the word on social media with the ever growing popularity of the "hashtag" in order to
push the money the city will save into STEM institutes and programs for the community. This essay
will highlight how that trend will benefit Louisville by bringing in jobs, money and innovation.
Trends spread like wildfire, and if there is anything people in this day and age desire it 's to feel a
part of a movement. With social media sites being the staple of every modern human, igniting a
trend is now easier than ever. Most Louisville residents are known for being liberal and
environmentally cautious, so

Night Sky Experiment
Our night sky, always seems to be sparkling at night, due to stars. Stars are luminous ball of gas,
mostly hydrogen and helium, held together by its own gravity. Our night sky is filled with groupings
of stars creating a galaxy, or also known as The Milky Way. The Milky Way, is one of many galaxies
in a Local Group, containing between 100– 400 billion stars. Observing these stars with the naked
eye is sometimes difficult, however technology today has made it much easier. In the experiment
"Number the Stars", we used two different types of telescopes, and a paper towel roll to record
different counts of stars in different brightness's in the sky. Between my partner and I we
hypothesized that the larger focal point on the telescope, would ... Show more content on

around 90% less stars than in the dark regions. However, when observing the sky with two different
eye pieces, the number of stars drastically increased when viewing through the 40 mm, almost
doubling. The viewings/counts came out to be very diverse in which the tables will show below.

a. When looking at the data between the two different eyepieces, with different focal lengths, we can
see that our hypothesis was correct. Eyepiece two has a larger focal point allowing us to see more
stars in the dark night. Also, we can conclude that the darker the viewing/ observing area in the sky,
allows the naked eye to see more visible light.
b. An experiment like this allows us to understand the visibility in light vs dark and the comparison

Descriptive Essay : Broad Stripes And Bright Stars
Shaan Bhandarkar
Ms. Knapp
English 410
22 September 2017
Broad Stripes and Bright Stars As I gaze off into the distance, a reflecting pool conjures the image of
a tall marble obelisk crowned with a red orb. An amethyst purple tint invades the clear summer
skies. The wind is nothing but calm for now, as it gently caresses my hair. A nearby confluence of
the Potomac River is populated with yachts and ships as if to set up a Battleship game. I sit
surrounded by silhouettes of men and women spread across the lawn just outside of an apartment
complex in the National Mall area. Some guests in the crowd seem to cackle as they toast by
clinking their wine glasses against one another's.
On the ground, occasional camera flashes provide the only sources of the light other than the yellow
moon hung low behind thin scudding clouds in the lonely sky. A few airplanes whizzed by a while
back at about five minute intervals, but the now–still sky casts a silence as enthusiasm for
conversations momentarily ebb away. A pungent smell of seared meat and garlic drifts through the
air, flooded with the smoky aroma of hot dogs and burgers. Kids jump up and down as teens and
adults, including my brother and my parents, pull out their smartphones and cameras to angle them
towards the night sky. People lie down on yoga mats to gaze up at the stars. Suddenly, I see brilliant
soaring vermillion, golden and acrid green flares lighting minerals crafted to resemble flowers
bursting at high speed. The crackle and pop could only mean one thing: the fireworks had begun.
As red and blue sparks sputter from the ships in the Potomac just ahead of us, even the loudest of
howls are drowned by the fireworks launched into the air. Beautiful, boisterous, and bright, the
fireworks look like a multi–colored spider spreading its fluorescent web across the moonlit sky. The
dark canvas of the sky is painted with depictions of American flags and ink–blotted scrolls, all lined
with red, white, and blue figures. Some of these fireworks shoot straight up before exploding while
others whirl in a spiral and shatter into a thousand sparks. Others also cascade like a waterfall and
float down in a glittering silver shower. Luminescent shards slice through the night

The Darkness Of The Night Sky And The Light In Paul...
The darkness of the night sky and the stars within will all be forgotten as result of artificial light
polluting the night sky; at least that's what the author of Let There Be Dark claims. The author, Paul
Bogard, fears an age of where there will not be a night sky, forever disturbing society. Every human
will be affected in this dilemma; being rich or poor won't matter. Paul uses as many resources as
possible to connect with the audience, so his point would get across. Paul harnesses the emotions of
the readers, the expert use of factual information and the correct word choices to illustrate why light
pollution ruins the wonder of the night sky for future generations. Throughout the story, the author
uses the power of emotion to draw the audience in. One way the author displays this idea is by
connecting a real–world ideal to his claim. An example of this is when the author makes a
connection of religion to his claim. As the author states, "Every religious tradition has considered
darkness invaluable for a soulful life". Like it or not, religion plays a huge role in the world.
Religion throughout history, rallies people to fight wars, end empires, solve problems even to this
day. If religion can start wars, then imagine what would happen when people's religious practices
are threatened by light pollution; more aggressive actions would be taken, possibly solving the
problem. Another play on emotion is by relating the night sky with inspiration. The author mentions

If there are many galaxies, why is the sky at night so dark? What causes these galaxies to transmit
light to the Earth? These are questions that researchers have been investigating for many years. The
astronomers have been studying the Olber's paradox. The Olber's paradox states that even though
the night sky looks dark, its not. The night sky is brimming of galaxies which gives off a glow. Even
galaxies that existed thousands of years ago can give off a glow, but it is hard to distinguish. There is
light beyond the Milky Way which is hard to see. Space is not completely black and is glows with
EBL or extragalactic background light from galaxies. Scientists are able to measure EBL by
observing gamma rays when they collide into photons. This

Light Pollution By Paul Bogard
The author of this passage, Paul Bogard, bestows his argument, 'natural darkness should be
preserved', based on supporting evidence and specific statistics from trustable sources, such as
NASA and WHO, in a perspective of the effects on human and the ecosystem as a whole; in addition
to the specific data from references, he uses emotional terminology to depict and emphasize the
significance of the issue, 'Light Pollution', and the urgency of the need of a solution to it. The writer
first starts off his essay by introducing his own personnel related to 'darkness' and then compares his
experience with that of the current generation. Bogard states that he knew about the dark and the
beauty of meteors and stars in the sky ,but he now knows that 8 out of 10 children will never able to
notice the significance of the night sky. In order to emphasize his statement in a more realistic and
emotional way, the author uses exaggeration with sentimental words. For instance, he describes the
dark as ' my hands disappeared before my eyes' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If Bogard bestowed the disadvantages and harmful effects that 'light pollution' might give to us, he
now depicts about the benefits from not having 'light pollution' or from darkness. For instance,
Bogard, firstly, urges that darkness will provide 'solitude' 'stillness' and etc. in just a short amount.
Secondly, he gives an example of religion by maintaining that for every religion dimness carries an
advantage of having a 'soulful' life. Lastly, he states that humans developed with darkness because
famous philosophers, scientists and even artists were able to spectate the world with the dark.
Bogard further gives an example of Van Gogh's 'Starry night' , which is an extremely valuable piece
of art, in order to convey a mood that darkness has really given a lot of opportunities for human–
beings to prosper in various

Personal Narrative: The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office
The midnight sky is pitch black with only a slight gleam of light emanating from the moon. The
night is so silent that even a pin drop could be heard from miles away. No one is stirring and the
world has drifted off into a deep sleep. The night seems blissfully peaceful. But the silence is torn by
the sound of rustling leaves in the distance. Two dark shadows emerge from the forest and gaze
heavily at the sleeping house. The two figures slowly creep towards the house with devious thoughts
racing through their minds. They begin to tear open the window screen and quietly crawl into the
house. A flashlight pierces through the darkness and flutters through the rooms. The figures begin to

I have helped with many cases to prepare them for trial. One specific case that comes to mind is
State versus Gillens and Mercer. These two men were indicted with conspiracy to commit murder,
murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. On
April 5th, Daniel Gillens and Hakeem Mercer planned and executed the murder of 26–year–old
Deonte Shackleford. Shackleford was killed right in front of his family at a store because of "street
beef" with gang members from the East Coast Bloods. Gang related incidents are seen quite often
within the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. It is a serious problem that runs rampant in New
Jersey and in many other states. The office must be aware of these different gangs when they are
working with their cases. The Prosecutor assigns his workers to read a gang investigator's handbook
to understand the different gangs in their area and the specific signs to look out for. The gangs that
are most likely to be found in New Jersey are the Latin Kings, Netas, Mexican Nationals,

The Dark Night Sky Monologue

  • 1. The Dark Night Sky Monologue Crystal orbs met the dark night sky. It was quiet, save for the shuddered breaths surrounding the girl. She couldn't move a muscle. Even her eyes stayed fixed on one star; the only star that dared to shine. The more she was forced to listen, the sooner she realized that the sound of the breathing was coming from her. "You don't get to leave that easily." The familiar voice boomed from sky. A green fog leaked from the trees, lying beside Bethany. But she still could not move. Her mouth gaped opened and the fog flowed into her throat. She could feel it passing through her body until her vision was clouded with it. From the fog came a dark figure. "You owe us everything. Your life is in our hands. And it's time to collect." As the hand wrapped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If anyone needed to know the trouble that lay waiting, it was the leader of the pack. She knocked until she finally answered the door. "Alright. Miss Queen. Your majesty. We got a slight issue. I don't want to put a hankerin' on anythin' ya'll got here... It's...cozy. But you got witches scannin' the bayou. Now that either means they're lookin' for me or they're lookin' for you. And we don't want either one. So whatever your plan will be, I'd suggest we implement it fast before we're as useless as a box of hair in the summertime." Beth nodded once before leaving the cabin. She wasn't a leader. Whatever the wolves decided she'd have to honor it. Even if it meant staying behind to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Short Story : A Story? A small floating island, all around a blue night sky is illuminated by the moon. The city on top, as quiet as a mouse. A small person running through one of the many alleyways, he stops, petrified. A large being concealed by shadows, barely visible. I stopped, assuming the worst, but as it stepped away from the darkness, I realized it was only my friend, Jonathan. After an exciting session of angered whispers, I told him the reason I was there. "I was heading down to West Side to talk to Uncle Isaiah about the Sky Ship." Two Hours Later "Who is it? Hello?" Uncle Isaiah said, annoyed by the knock on his door. "It's me!" I said, to which he responded, "I don't quite recall anyone named me, for the past, well, forever." "Ugh, I mean it's Sam." After a moment, he responded a loud "How are you?" in a few seconds of consideration, due to the shock I had received from my friend, I replied "I'm good, though I'm starting to think going out at night isn't the best of ideas I have ever had." "Maybe you can try again when your older? None the less, what's the real reason you came here?" I simply replied, "When will I get my Sky ship?" "In due time Sam, in due time." Three months later Christmas, the only time of the year when I am actually happy outside, we get so much snow up here it is insane; then again, we are on a floating island! As I travelled from my mother's house to my uncles', I remembered what had happened on this journey 6 years ago, when I was only 10, "Yes I know, but we can't afford that right now Sam, we are struggling even to keep the house!" "But when can we get it? I really want one!" "The Sky ship or the cat? Hahaha" "You know I meant the Sky ship, we already have a cat!" "I told you, in a few years I will have the house paid off and everything and we can get you one, but why do you even want one of your own? They are so expensive and you won't be able to use it until your 16." "I'll tell you in a second dad, I just saw 20 dollars fly by I swear!" I said excited "Is this another one of your pranks?" "You just wait and see," I said running after it, after a few feet I heard a whisper, and then I was knocked out cold... After I am not sure how long, I woke up with a nasty headache and no clue where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. History Of The Donella Party The party had just started when Donella and Lilith arrived. As Donella floated into the forest she admired the fanciful decor. There were fireflies trained to hover, providing the party with soft lighting. There were handmade tables veiled by skillfully woven spider silk. There were flower petals covering every inch of the ground. And there were fifty fairies playing traditional fairy songs on instruments made from items around the forest. The forest was ethereal; Donella felt as if she was in a dream. As the night progressed, Donella socialized with her fellow fairies and helped herself to the buffet featuring a fish that she, herself, had caught. And as midnight approached the fairies began to dance in the light on the moon and sing in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Vija Celmins Matthew Marks Gallery recently opened solo show of Vija Celmins, one of the greatest contemporary female artists from United States. Celmins is well known for her precise rendered paintings, carefully copied from photographs and prints. For this exhibition, the artist presents 19 new works after 7 years of silence. There are paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints. The entire space of the gallery is given to Celmins, since this is her first personal show with Matthew Marks Gallery. Works are beautifully organized in two halls of the building, making it very easy for the public to move around. There is no decorations, just plain white walls. Known for being intimidating and intrusive at times, white background in case of this exhibition helps to direct viewer attention to Celmins' works, erasing all possible disturbances between art pieces and person, who's observing them. Indeed every work exists in its own "space", which allows viewer to have almost personal connection to each object. Placement of the paintings far away from each other creates unique ... This painting has such an incredible depth, that it is impossible to reach the background. The fulcrum is lost, and the painting looks like a window to the universe. Reverse Night Sky #4 (Fig.2) is a negative image of starry sky, where shiny stars are turned into black particles, and darkness of the sky is reversed to blinding brightness. It creates interesting feeling, as we could observe the underside of the cosmos. Another spacey painting is Untitled (Ochre) (Fig.3), for this work Celmins adds color to her monochrome palette. This work could look like photograph of the galaxy, with golden radiance behind numerous speckles of stars. Again, artist achieved infinite depth, that background totally ... My nose was a little stuffy and I coughed here and there, but I brushed it off like it was no big deal, like it wasn't affecting me at all. I told you my exact feelings every single time we spoke. You, on the other hand, were a closed door, a locked door. Knocking on that door, even banging, you would never let me in. You were much like the moon, hiding the most beautiful parts of you away from the rest of the world. But sometimes you'd shine brighter than any other matter in the night sky. Looking into your eyes was like staring crystal clear ocean. I could see my reflection in them. But when you grew tired, when your heart turned cold, it's like the waves washed them away, leaving them gray. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Night Sky It was a dark and stormy night, the wind blows as the ghostly moonlight filled the darkness. George the highwayman made his way toward Bess the innkeeper's daughter. She was gazing out the window when the two of their eyes met. Hers, black as the night sky, and a dark red love knot placed on her hair. A red dress made of the fabric silk. Her hair was a dark brown, but could have been mistaken as black. Her outfit fit her personality as much as it did the highwayman. I hope he loves poetry. Bess thought. He rides toward her on his horse dressed in a fancy cloak colored velvet, with a curled white wig and doe brown skin, lace wrapped around his chin, and the most beautiful brown eyes anyone had ever seen. His boots sitting as high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Suddenly, George pulled out his pistol and shot at the redcoat closest to him. "How does a silver bullet feel in your gut." George squaked. Then the second redcoat came up and cried, "I wouldn't know, you didn't hit me!" The two remaining redcoats chased after George for as long as they could. "Yip yip," George tells his horse with a calm voice, "try and catch me, and I will give up my fortune to you." The redcoats continue to play in George's game. The redcoats sped up and suddenly called, "Highwayman, slow down or force will be a factor of this chase." George wittingly says, "Ok, if we have to!" George shoots the third redcoat. Now only one redcoat remains. The last red coat shrills at George, " Alas, it is the end for you." The redcoat pulls out his weapon and shoots for the highwayman's head. "You missed," George implies angrily, "and you shot my hat." George whips out his sword and turns around toward the red coat. He takes his head with one clean swipe of the blade. By the time George finds the perfect gift, it is already nighttime. He has no idea the other redcoats are tracking down Bess while he is still riding back to her. They raid the inn and drink all the ale. The redcoats quickly make their way to Bess's room, and tie her hands with a rope on the foot of her bed. I've got to find a way to warn the highwayman. Bess inferred. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The True Value Of Life "Worldly fame, power, and money are all great values in life; but the greatest value of all, in life, is love." Christian muse's to himself as he walks down the stairway of the San Francisco airport terminal. He makes his way to the taxi ward for a ride to the Sunshine cruise liner. It will be en route from San Francisco, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. It will pass through vast seas, emerald tropical islands, and reflect the beauty of the ocean life. For all this Christian will walk down its planks, as liken unto a rich man. In reality, he is a low class, paycheck to paycheck, average built, tall, just maybe over six foot, dark–haired, ordinary, country guy. He would have likely never done this, had it not been for her. Rose is the tall, slim, beautiful Thai girl that came into his life and finally, can take her hand, as they walk their way to this Pacific honeymoon. Unknown to Christian and Rose, this voyage is will bring them the adventure, Golden Ties, and love of their lifetime. Alas, Christian and Rose arrive at the cruise just before it launches. They climb on board and find their palace cabin. Although hardly recognizable, just then, they heard the ship plunge into the waves of the vast ocean. Overhead, an observant seagull flies. Then it is gone; into the light, misty fog. Later, the seagull returns, with it, the sun, as it sets in the deep horizon of the west. The water sparkles like prisms. However, above the water, is a cruise. Then, seeing that, on its deck, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Night Sky Constellation Research Constellations are pictures or shapes that ancient people discovered in the night sky. Some of the most popular constellations are the twelve Zodiac signs. Another famous constellation is Orion, or 'The Hunter'. I chose to write about Orion because personally I love the story of how his constellation came to be. He is one of the main constellations I always notice in the night sky. The story of Orion is that he was a talented hunter. He was determined to rid the Earth of all wild animals. However this angered Gaia, the Earth goddess. She released a scorpion on Orion. Soon Orion discovered he could not defeat the scorpion and jumped into the sea. Later on Apollo noticed a black spot in the sea and dared Artemis that she could not hit it with her bow and arrow. She stood up to the challenge and hit the ... He promised the young girl he would always watch over her with his strong hunting skills and the help of his dogs Canis Major and Canis Minor. Many months had passed as the affection between the two prospered. One day the young girl's father discovered the two in an orchard declaring love for one another. He became enraged and banned the young lovers from continuing this affair. However they still managed. The young girl's mother supported the two and helped them betray the rulings of her father. The mother took the two to a nearby Province and committed them into marriage. The following day the mother explained all of this to the father, hoping to turn around his previous judgement. Without word the father packed the young girl's trunk and shipped her far away from Orion and his love for her. Both lovers were devastated by this new development. • 45. Native Myths of How the Stars Came to Be Throughout generations stories were passed down about how things could've been created like the earth, mankind, and even the stars. Every culture and religion has their own myth of how things came to be. The Hindu's, Native American's, and the Chinese all made up stories about how the stars were created. The Native Americans believed that in the story "Coyote Places The Stars", a coyote wonders why his wolf brothers look up at the sky every night. Well when the wolves finally tell the coyote that there are animals up in the sky. The coyote shot arrows up into the sky to create a ladder to be able to climb to the stars and visit the animals above. As they climbed to the stars they found two bears roaming the skies. The coyote decided to leave the wolves with the bears and as he climbed down the arrows he took one out at a time so the wolves couldn't leave. As the coyote looks up at the night sky, he is pleased on how the arrangement of the stars look so he begins to arrange other stars as well, pleased with work he told Meadowlark to tell people who looks at the stars that it was the coyote who has placed the stars, now Meadowlark tells everyone about coyote and the stars ("Native American Legends"). The Hindu's believed that a coyote, a Navajo god, was created by the mischievous behavior of the gods. When the world was created the Holy People gathered around and began placing stars in the sky, angered by the slow process of the star placings, the coyote placed a red star ... • 49. Night Sky Creative Writing I'm lying on the roof of the building with one arm crossed under my head and my eyes fixed on the billions and billions of stars above. It's like nothing, I've ever seen before. Completely beautiful and absolutely breath–taking. I snuck out of the apartment while the others were sleeping. They still are and I hope they stay that way for a while, because I don't want to move from this stunning sight. It's been a little over three weeks since I arrived in this city and it's been ten days since that trade with the Reds and my shoulder is still sore and slowly healing, though the stitches are gone. I still can't lift heavy objects without tearing it open. Thorn is still teaching me how to defend myself, more basic moves and no intense training thanks to my injury. All I want is to keep my thoughts in the stars. I've never really just looked at the stars, but then again, I've never lived in a place where I could just look at the stars. I wonder what's out there, beyond the atmosphere away from all this chaos and the Angelic Order. Is there peace and rest? Or is there just more war and bloodshed? Does chaos control the rest of the galaxy like it does on Earth? Was there a time where men ever left this place and explored the stars? My thoughts are interrupted as footsteps echo across the roof. I jump to my feet, ready to fight. Instead, I am greeted with a short laugh. "Relax, Cry, it's only me," Thorn's voice whispers, before stepping out of the shadows. • 53. Analysis Of Van Gogh 's Starry Night Sky One of Vincent Van Gogh's most world renowned paintings is his landscape oil painting Starry Night. The painting displays a small town underneath an unusual yet still extremely beautiful night sky. In this night sky, Van Gogh utilizes an array of colors that blend well together in order to enhance the sky as a whole. The town is clearly a small one due to the amount of buildings that are present in the painting itself. In this small town most of the buildings have lights on which symbolize life in a community. Another visual in Starry Night is the mountain like figures that appear in the background of the illustrious painting. Several things contribute to the beauty of Van Gogh's painting which are the painting's function, context, style, and design. Van Gogh's utilization of these elements help bring further emphasis to his work in Starry Night. Starry Night was painted by Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch painter who was well known for being an impressionist during his time. Van Gogh was born March 30, 1853 in the Netherlands and died at the age of 37 in France where he actually painted Starry Night while in the Hospital. Starry Night is located in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (Van Gogh Gallery). The main point of emphasis in Starry Night is the relationships between a community, nature, and religion. Van Gogh ties these three points of emphasis together in an exceptional manner in Starry Night. He compares the community and nature by placing the town near an alluring ... • 57. Analysis : The Night Sky Planisphere Summary: For the first part of the lab we measured the right ascension and declination of certain stars and constellations; we used the star chart like a graph with measurements of time and angles. Another part of the lab we used a star and planet locator also known as a planisphere to determine the time and date certain stars and constellations are visible, set, or rise at. Using the planisphere was quite easy to determine stars and how they correlate to time because it 's pleasant to visualize and address smaller stars that are not so apparent in the sky to the naked eye. Questions: What do your planispheres represent? Our planispheres are diagrams that depict the date and time a constellation or star will be visible by it passing through the meridian while facing North to Polaris. The night sky planisphere also depicts what stars can be seen during any time of the year in specific direction in the sky. Is it possible to predict a celestial event using planispheres? Planispheres can only locate stars according to time and position but cannot predict celestial events like eclipses or asteroids. What is right ascension? Right ascension is a measurement of hours and minutes in eastward motion on the celestial equator. What is declination? Declination is the opposite of ascension, meaning it 's a horizontal measurement. It is the measurement of how far the sun is from the celestial equator in degrees from 0 to 90. Counting Stars Memoir Project Blanca Flores Memoir Project Journalism 25 October 2017 Counting Stars Ever lonely star I see above me, is like a lonely person waiting for another star to come along. As another star comes along it shines that bright that there isn't no other to compare with. He was the brightest star in the night, others seemed dull by comparison. Non–stop conversations began, and I started losing sleep. I got excite,a feeling I haven't felt for a long time. We had even given each other nicknames, Blancss and Nakss, who had shared adventures, and a song that was randomly picked, Counting Stars. On one of our band trips to San Diego, Naks introduced me to his parents. His mom was the sweetest women, his dad always looked mad but whenever he looked at me he smiled, his smile was just like Naks. Days we spent on the trip, we were mostly together eating or sight seeing. The 2nd day we were in San Diego was my birthday, and that day we went to a small plaza. Most of the band group went to a museum of air and space, including Naks went in the museum but not me. Instead, I went to the Zoo with the other half of the band. Made identifiable by the three bright stars that make up "Orion's Belt", Orion is easily recognized throughout the world due to the convenient position upon the celestial equator, allowing the constellation to be seen from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. I chose this constellation as my favorite because it was, in fact, one of the first myths that I had ever learned, and also because it was the easiest constellation that I was able to find from my Constellation Atlas as a child. The constellation of Orion is comprised of mostly of blue stars: young, hot burning, giant stars that range from 243 light years to 1,359 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he knew that Orion was swimming far in the ocean away from Artemis, Apollo came to his sister and challenged her to an archery contest. Artemis was incredibly proud of her abilities as an archer, and so, eagerly accepted the challenge as a way of besting her brother. Artemis welcomed Apollo to point to anything, and she would hit the target easily. Apollo pointed to a small dark speck on the horizon, which he knew was Orion's head, and invited his sister shoot, which she did. Of course, Artemis hit the speck true. It was only when Apollo had already left and Orion's body had washed ashore that Artemis realized the cruel trick that her brother had pulled. In her grief, the Virgin Goddess turned her love into stardust, and gave him a honored place in the heavens. This is my myth of Orion. My eyes try to adjust to the sudden loss of light, my pupils dilating to their maximum size. I can't see. Frantically I reach forward into the emptiness around me. I'm searching for something; what it is, is something I don't even know. Is it familiarity? Is it light? Is it another just as lost as me? I ... am alone. In my panic I nearly miss it, something that was always there. Above me, a speck of light blinks into existence. It shines brightly against the sheet of black it is set upon. But its solitary life lasts for only a moment as the black sheet is poked with billions of holes. Before my eyes lies a magnificent show of light. I continue to stare as my once empty world is filled with pinpricks of brilliance. Suddenly a streak dances across the sky, a line cutting through night. As quickly as it appears, it vanishes, leaving only its faint impression. The sky is beautiful. It is a whisper... falling effortlessly from my mouth. And of course that statement holds true. To explain my passion for space, you have to revert to childlike wonder. It isn't just a love for the stars above, but also an endless awe for them. I am entranced by its many mysteries, by the lack of knowledge we have for it. I have never thought of a specific profound moment that I have had from my passion with astronomy and astrophysics because, frankly, it has always been profound. Past the ceiling of my room, ... At first I couldn't tell if I was blind or not with the darkness lingering in front of me. That was until I rolled myself over and was introduced to the milky colored moon that peaked behind the clouds. They quickly made their way across the barren land to reveal the deep purple haze that was the night sky. The night looked young as the moon shined bright behind the branches of the dead trees. Each of the trees stretched their branches out to reach for the sky. You could tell that they wanted to escape from this place as their branches reached for the stars. However, the malnourished earth refused to let them go as the ground locked their exposed roots to the soil beneath them. Some had many of their hopes of leaving forever, lost, as they were flat on the dirt soil. With the coldness of the earth under my bare back I was in awe as I was on the ground, naked, feeling like time had stopped. For the first time I felt separated from my body. Just my mind and my spirit were present, filled with questions that never led to answers: How did I get here? Where was home? Who even am I? How do I "know" things, but at the same time don't? Why can't I remember what happened before this? My questions were never answered, for I was abruptly interrupted by a stranger that loomed over me. His face appeared out of thin air and hovered ... Explanations of both the astronomical instruments as well as visuals will be provided. All of the information and opportunities were provided to me by Austin Peay State University, with instruction by Dr. Buckner. The First Quarter Night was focused more on the technology and instruments used to view and document targeted subjects in space, whereas the Dark Sky Night focused more on the viewings. Throughout this observation I will reintroduce the telescopes, aids, and celestial objects I examined through Dr. Buckner's instruction on observation nights. An unfinished game of solitaire, sprawled out across the barn floor. The barn was lit only by a single red candle on an overturned crate. Next to the candle was an opened red pack of cigarettes and a dirty brass lighter. Fresh hay was scattered around the cold floor, a job unfinished. In the corner of the shadowed barn, a spider clung to its web as it slowly devoured a helpless fly. Curley's wife lay still, untouched, the sight almost had a natural feeling about it, as though this was all her life was ever to amount to, she lay dead amongst the hay; it was as thought the others had forgotten about her and merely continued with their dreary lives. A rusted shovel leaned against the wall, next to a freshly dug mound of earth, covering Candy's lifeless dog. Lastly, spread across the floor, was a ragged length of cold consuming rope, with a noose tied in one frayed end. George crouched before the rope, hunched over almost questioningly, as though judging whether or not this was his best way out of the situation. He was dirty and unshaven; he had yet not bothered to change from his gloomy, threadbare work attire. • 113. Light Pollution, And The Effects Of Light Pollution A new study illustrates that light pollution has increased to such an extent all over the world that both human beings and other animals are negatively affected by it. The study marks the first observation of satellite images to ever be designed specifically for detecting particular types of artificial lights. A petition was also started recently via Change.Org outlining three main ways light pollution impinges upon the health of humans and birds while also brightening the night sky. "For human health, the biggest issue is it messes with circadian rhythms," according to Laura Stepney, who started the petition. "You can get black out curtains but you shouldn't have to. The city should be considering that from the beginning with the design, instead of people having to react and protect themselves." She cites a study that found residents of metropolitan areas lose considerable hours of sleep due to going to bed later and waking earlier. A more recent study published in the peer– reviewed journal, Science Advances, used satellite data to illustrate that Earth's night is gradually brightening. It also showed that artificially lit outdoor surfaces have become 2.2 percent more common on average each year since 2012. Pundits argue that this is particularly problematic because these nighttime lights not only disrupt circadian rhythms but also increase risks of depression, diabetes and cancer. In the course of migrating, both sea turtles and birds are disoriented by nighttime lights, and insects are attracted to them, which often leads them to their death. These lights are predominately LED lights, which have become increasingly popular over the course of the last couple decades primarily based on the marketing promise of energy conservation. LED lights are not inherently problematic in and of themselves according to German Research Center for Geosciences physicist Chris Kyba. He says the problem is the sheer number of lights that people are collectively installing. "We'll light something that we didn't light before, like a bicycle path through a park or a section of highway leading outside of town in the past wasn't lit," Kyba explains as an example. "And so all of those new uses of light offset, to some extent, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 121. Personification In Sylvia Plath's Stars Over The Dordogne In the poem "Stars Over the Dordogne" by Sylvia Plath, the author illustrates a message by using disparate techniques. It slowly develops as the readers go throughout the piece, however all the techniques are effective and leave an impact on the audience. Moreover, it causes the audience to have various views throughout the piece. The sense in this poem is about how everyone has a divergent outlook on the world. The author shows this, by using imagery, personification, and shift to develop a message. Plath first uses imagery to develop her point and to create an image in the reader's mind. For instance, the author says, "Stars are dropping thick as stones" (Plath 1). With this phrase the author develops the image of stars slowly disappearing in the night sky, it makes us have a peculiar image of stars as if they drop here and there, instead of them hanging in the night sky 24/7. The author also causes us to have an image of how everything outside is quiet and calm, she demonstrates this by using the phrase, "Than the dark of the sky because it is quite starless. The woods are a well. The stars drop silently." (Plath 3–4). This phrase develops an image of how the woods are never ending, how the stars dipping away in the night sky, and makes the audience have a new perspective of how nature is never ending. In addition, the author creates an image of how the stars hang only by a thread in the night sky, the author demonstrates this by saying, "Hanging shyly under the studded ... "Our species needs, and deserves, a citizenry with minds wide awake and a basic understanding of how the world works."–Carl Sagan, Cosmos. Louisville, Kentucky is ranked a mere 58 out of 100 cities nearby in number of STEM programs and jobs available (Science, Technologies, Engineering, and Mathematics). STEM fields are responsible for progression in any given industry. Louisville has such dense light pollution all we can see at night is a few scattered stars and a glow, the dim glow blanketing the heavens diminishes the curiosity of scientific progress and achieving the impossible. Descriptive Essay : Broad Stripes And Bright Stars Shaan Bhandarkar Ms. Knapp English 410 22 September 2017 Broad Stripes and Bright Stars As I gaze off into the distance, a reflecting pool conjures the image of a tall marble obelisk crowned with a red orb. An amethyst purple tint invades the clear summer skies. The wind is nothing but calm for now, as it gently caresses my hair. A nearby confluence of the Potomac River is populated with yachts and ships as if to set up a Battleship game. I sit surrounded by silhouettes of men and women spread across the lawn just outside of an apartment complex in the National Mall area. Some guests in the crowd seem to cackle as they toast by clinking their wine glasses against one another's. On the ground, occasional camera flashes provide the only sources of the light other than the yellow moon hung low behind thin scudding clouds in the lonely sky. A few airplanes whizzed by a while back at about five minute intervals, but the now–still sky casts a silence as enthusiasm for conversations momentarily ebb away. A pungent smell of seared meat and garlic drifts through the air, flooded with the smoky aroma of hot dogs and burgers. Kids jump up and down as teens and adults, including my brother and my parents, pull out their smartphones and cameras to angle them towards the night sky. People lie down on yoga mats to gaze up at the stars. Suddenly, I see brilliant soaring vermillion, golden and acrid green flares lighting minerals crafted to resemble flowers bursting at high speed. The crackle and pop could only mean one thing: the fireworks had begun. As red and blue sparks sputter from the ships in the Potomac just ahead of us, even the loudest of howls are drowned by the fireworks launched into the air. Beautiful, boisterous, and bright, the fireworks look like a multi–colored spider spreading its fluorescent web across the moonlit sky. The dark canvas of the sky is painted with depictions of American flags and ink–blotted scrolls, all lined with red, white, and blue figures. Some of these fireworks shoot straight up before exploding while others whirl in a spiral and shatter into a thousand sparks. Others also cascade like a waterfall and float down in a glittering silver shower. Luminescent shards slice through the night ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 139. The Darkness Of The Night Sky And The Light In Paul... The darkness of the night sky and the stars within will all be forgotten as result of artificial light polluting the night sky; at least that's what the author of Let There Be Dark claims. The author, Paul Bogard, fears an age of where there will not be a night sky, forever disturbing society. Every human will be affected in this dilemma; being rich or poor won't matter. Paul uses as many resources as possible to connect with the audience, so his point would get across. Paul harnesses the emotions of the readers, the expert use of factual information and the correct word choices to illustrate why light pollution ruins the wonder of the night sky for future generations. Throughout the story, the author uses the power of emotion to draw the audience in. One way the author displays this idea is by connecting a real–world ideal to his claim. An example of this is when the author makes a connection of religion to his claim. As the author states, "Every religious tradition has considered darkness invaluable for a soulful life". Like it or not, religion plays a huge role in the world. Religion throughout history, rallies people to fight wars, end empires, solve problems even to this day. If religion can start wars, then imagine what would happen when people's religious practices are threatened by light pollution; more aggressive actions would be taken, possibly solving the problem. Another play on emotion is by relating the night sky with inspiration. The author mentions how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 143. Night Sky Research Paper If there are many galaxies, why is the sky at night so dark? What causes these galaxies to transmit light to the Earth? These are questions that researchers have been investigating for many years. The astronomers have been studying the Olber's paradox. The Olber's paradox states that even though the night sky looks dark, its not. The night sky is brimming of galaxies which gives off a glow. Even galaxies that existed thousands of years ago can give off a glow, but it is hard to distinguish. There is light beyond the Milky Way which is hard to see. Space is not completely black and is glows with EBL or extragalactic background light from galaxies. Scientists are able to measure EBL by observing gamma rays when they collide into photons. • 147. Light Pollution By Paul Bogard The author of this passage, Paul Bogard, bestows his argument, 'natural darkness should be preserved', based on supporting evidence and specific statistics from trustable sources, such as NASA and WHO, in a perspective of the effects on human and the ecosystem as a whole; in addition to the specific data from references, he uses emotional terminology to depict and emphasize the significance of the issue, 'Light Pollution', and the urgency of the need of a solution to it. The writer first starts off his essay by introducing his own personnel related to 'darkness' and then compares his experience with that of the current generation. Bogard states that he knew about the dark and the beauty of meteors and stars in the sky ,but he now knows that 8 out of 10 children will never able to notice the significance of the night sky. In order to emphasize his statement in a more realistic and emotional way, the author uses exaggeration with sentimental words. For instance, he describes the dark as ' my hands disappeared before my eyes' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If Bogard bestowed the disadvantages and harmful effects that 'light pollution' might give to us, he now depicts about the benefits from not having 'light pollution' or from darkness. For instance, Bogard, firstly, urges that darkness will provide 'solitude' 'stillness' and etc. in just a short amount. Secondly, he gives an example of religion by maintaining that for every religion dimness carries an advantage of having a 'soulful' life. Lastly, he states that humans developed with darkness because famous philosophers, scientists and even artists were able to spectate the world with the dark. Bogard further gives an example of Van Gogh's 'Starry night' , which is an extremely valuable piece of art, in order to convey a mood that darkness has really given a lot of opportunities for human– beings to prosper in various ... • 151. Personal Narrative: The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office The midnight sky is pitch black with only a slight gleam of light emanating from the moon. The night is so silent that even a pin drop could be heard from miles away. No one is stirring and the world has drifted off into a deep sleep. The night seems blissfully peaceful. But the silence is torn by the sound of rustling leaves in the distance. Two dark shadows emerge from the forest and gaze heavily at the sleeping house. The two figures slowly creep towards the house with devious thoughts racing through their minds. They begin to tear open the window screen and quietly crawl into the house. A flashlight pierces through the darkness and flutters through the rooms. The figures begin to rummage through the house and fill their hands with wealth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have helped with many cases to prepare them for trial. One specific case that comes to mind is State versus Gillens and Mercer. These two men were indicted with conspiracy to commit murder, murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. On April 5th, Daniel Gillens and Hakeem Mercer planned and executed the murder of 26–year–old Deonte Shackleford. Shackleford was killed right in front of his family at a store because of "street beef" with gang members from the East Coast Bloods. Gang related incidents are seen quite often within the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. It is a serious problem that runs rampant in New Jersey and in many other states. The office must be aware of these different gangs when they are working with their cases. The Prosecutor assigns his workers to read a gang investigator's handbook to understand the different gangs in their area and the specific signs to look out for. The gangs that are most likely to be found in New Jersey are the Latin Kings, Netas, Mexican Nationals, Cachondas, 4–en–Quieto, 18th Street, Los Traviesos, Treces Locos, Vatos Locos, Aryan Brotherhood, Prison Brotherhood of Bikers, Five Percenters, Bloods, Crips, Broad Street Posse, Ghetto Riders, Hell's Angels, Pagans, Satan's Soldiers, Warlocks, White Aryan Resistance, ...
