1. Participating in ePIRLS
Reasons why assessing electronic reading literacy skills is important for our children’s futures
Dr. Jarrod Hingston
2. What is electronic reading?
Electronic reading involves the various format of
reading that may be done through digital or
computerised devices
Electronic reading will often involve reading multiple
sources and needing to evaluate and synthesise
these resources
Ensuring that students have the appropriate skills
for online reading is a particularly important area of
reading literacy in the modern age
Online reading has become the main way that
people obtain information, ensuring that students
are appropriately prepared to read, comprehend
and interpret online information is critical to their
futures.
3. What is PIRLS?
The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study
(PIRLS) is an international study of reading literacy of
Grade 4 students
Commencing in 2006, PIRLS is conducted every five
years under the auspices of the International Association
for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA)
PIRLS is an important study for benchmarking
educational practice that supports the development of
reading literacy
The next PIRLS study will be conducted in 2016.
4. Why ePIRLS?
Coinciding with PIRLS in 2016 will be the conducting of the
Electronic Progress in International Reading Literacy Study
(ePIRLS)
ePIRLS will study the electronic reading abilities of Grade 4
students in over thirty countries
ePIRLS utilises innovative assessment techniques to simulate a
real life performance of online reading.
In addition to studying achievement, ePIRLS will also develop a
sound picture of pedagogical, school-based and background factors
that influence high achievement in electronic reading.
In addition to providing a unique set of data, PIRLS and ePIRLS will
provide a comprehensive view of both print reading and electronic
reading skills
ePIRLS will provide curriculum experts and policy-makers with
valuable insight into areas of development in the teaching of
electronic reading

5. When will e-PIRLS be conducted?
ePIRLS will be conducted during 2016, assessing the
same sample of students that undertake the PIRLS
assessments
The ePIRLS study will be conducted every five years
ePIRLS reports against a longitudinal scale that enables
growth and improvements in electronic reading to be
measured over time
ePIRLS complements the digital reading assessment
conducted as a part of the PISA study every three years.
